Dave Brubeck QuartetNew Brubeck Quartet Live At Montreux ... LP
Tomato, 1977. Near Mint- ... $14.99
This one's an all-Brubeck family affair – with senior Dave on acoustic piano, as you might expect – working in a quartet with Dan Brubeck on percussion, Chris Brubeck on bass and trombone, and Darius Brubeck on keyboards. The sound's still strongly guided by Dave's traditionally well-timed lines – and even the presence of trombone and keyboards doesn't veer things too strongly from the usual Brubeck groove, save for a few points in the set. Titles include "Summer Music", "It's A Raggy Waltz", "Brandenburg Gate", "In Your Own Sweet Way", and "It Could Happen To You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Annette PeacockX-Dreams ... LP
Tomato, 1979. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
Pretty wild stuff from Annette Peacock – almost a "no wave" record at times, with lots of quirky art rock overtones next to the jazz vocal stylings that are more of her typical bag. The album's got lots of heavy guitars from rockers that include Mick Ronson, Chris Spedding, and Brian Godding – but it's also got a kind of cool approach to the music that goes for some nice faux-soulful takes on a few tracks, creating funk where we wouldn't expect it – and going for some warmer moments that soften Annette in ways that sound very nice. Our favorites are the cuts "This Feel Within", "Real & Defined Androgens", and "Questions" – and other titles include "Don't Be Cruel", "Dear Bela", and "My Mama Never Taught Me How To Cook". LP, Vinyl record album
(Still sealed with hype sticker.)

Townes Van ZandtBest Of Townes Van Zandt ... LP
Tomato/Fat Possum, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 21.98
A pretty much flawless collection of tunes from Townes Van Zandt's most loved album from the late 60s to late 70s – a different tracklist from earlier Best Ofs, and a set that really does serve up a treasure trove of achingly beautiful songs! Includes some of the best material from Our Mother The Mountain, his self-titled LP, High, Low And In Between, Delta Mama Blues, Flyin' Shoes, Delta Momma Blues, the earlier records in that run long beloved, the later just as great if not oft-mentioned or the songs as oft-covered, with 16 great songs on 2LPs: "For The Sake Of The Song", "Pancho & Lefty", "To Live Is To Fly", "I'll Be Here In The Morning", "St John The Gambler", "Black Widow Blues", "Tower Song", "Tecumseh Valley", "Lungs", "Rex's Blues" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Townes Van ZandtFor The Sake Of The Song (with download) ... LP
Tomato/Fat Possum, 1968. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
The great debut of Townes Van Zandt! On the level of pure songwriting, it's masterful – Townes was pretty much in peak form on that front even on the debut! The record is at it's best when it's at it's most intimate – simply letting his voice and acoustic guitar carry everything. There's some fairly adventurous production by Jack Clement & Jim Malloy, though – a bit out of character for Townes at his slightly later, more stripped down and iconic – but that's actually something we appreciate a lot more than we used to. Like the big budget studio recordings of Van Zandt's songs as covered by others, it goes to show just how sturdy and adaptable his songs are in different settings. Classic! Includes "For The Sake Of The Song", "Tecumseh Valley", "Many A Fine Lady", "Quick Silver Dadreams Of Maria", "I'll Be There In The Morning", "Sad Cinderella", "All Your Young Servants", "Sixteen Summers, Fifteen Falls" and more. ✨✧ John Lee HookerJohn Lee Hooker Alone – Vol 2 (with download) ... LP
Tomato/Fat Possum, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A wonderful album that's easily one of John Lee Hooker's finest moments of the 70s – a set recorded live before a small audience at Hunter College in New York, but done with a feel that makes the whole thing even more timeless than most of Hooker's other albums of the decade! The mix has the vocals right up front – way more than even the guitar, at a level that really captures all the personal inflections and amazing tones in the lyrics – as well as John Lee's hip spoken intros as he works his way through the songs. Make no mistake, this isn't one of those hokey "college blues" albums that were coming out at the time – but instead a timeless portrait of one of the true originators, working here at his best. Titles on this second volume include "Trying To Survive", "Put Your Hand On Your Hip", "Hobo Blues", "You Ain't Too Old To Shift Them Gears", "Crawlin King Snake", and "I Wish You Could Change Your Ways". ✨✧ Oscar PetersonMotions & Emotions ... LP
MPS, 1969. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Pure genius from Oscar Peterson – one of his finest moments ever! The record is very different than most of Oscar's over-recorded trio format ones – and features Claus Ogerman crafting some impeccable backings of lofty strings and compressed horns, creating a pillow of air that takes Oscar's piano to the sky and beyond, floating into realms never dreamed of on other LPs! The set sparkles with a strident MPS easy groove – completely sublime, with a perfectness that we'd ascribe to a rare few albums, such as the similar-grooving Jobim album Wave, also helped out tremendously by Ogerman. Titles include "Dreamsville", "Sally's Tomato", "Sunny", "Wave", "Wandering", and "Ode To Billy Joe". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Freddie KingFreddie King Is A Blues Master ... CD
Cotillion (Japan), 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
They got the title right on this one – and the album's a smoking batch of tunes that captures Freddie in all his guitar-driven glory! The set features Freddie working with a tight Atlantic studio group that includes King Curtis, David Newman, James Booker, and Billy Butler – but the sound is raw, rootsy, and has a nice down-homey feel – with none of the cliches that you might expect from a release on Cotillion. Freddie sings a bit, but the best cuts are the instrumental ones, which take his older blues guitar style into a funkier Atlantic groove. King Curtis produced, and the titles include "Play It Cool", "Blue Shadows", "Hot Tomato", "Wide Open", "Sweet Thing", "Hideaway", and the excellent groover "Funky " – a massive instrumental filled with great guitar! ✨✧ Jack WilsonBrazilian Mancini ... CD
Vault/Essential, 1965. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful combination of talents – and a great idea for an album! The great LA pianist Jack Wilson is working here with his group that includes Roy Ayers on vibes – and they've got some extra backing from Brazilian players Chico Batera and Sebastiao Neto on percussion, plus "Tony Brazil" on guitar – a name that we're guessing might stand in for a much more famous player! The tunes have that wonderful lyrical vibe that Wilson and Ayers created together – but set to the magic of Henry Mancini – whose tunes are not just a perfect fit for Wilson's ideas on the keys, but which also really take off here in some very different ways. The set's got a completely sublime version of "Sally's Tomato" – and other titles include "Dear Heart", "Blue Satin", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Night Flower", "Lujon", "Mr Lucky", and "Softly". CD

✨✧ Andy Hamill & OthersBee For Bass ... CD
Emu (UK), 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful little album – filled with jazz, soul, and a sense of collaboration that's extremely unique! Andy Hammill's a bassist on the British scene, and has played on a range of some of the hippest sessions in London during the past few years. For the set, he gathered together a host of famous friends – including Omar, Valerie Etienne, Carleen Anderson, Mark Murphy, Chris Bowden, and Ursula Rucker – all to provide vocals and instrumentation for a wonderful set of tracks that skips across genres as easily and fluidly as Andy's fingers skip across the strings of the bass! Andy's strong work on acoustic bass is at the core of the set, but the added guests really flesh out the sound a lot – taking the personal and mellow tunes, and opening them up tremendously. Jazz is at the core of the session, but there's also a folsky warm that touches each tune – not to mention the soulful side of the vocals by all the great singers on the set! Titles include "The Planet Formerly Known As The Moon", "Mothers & Daughters Now Mothers", "Why Do You Cry?", "Getting On", "Camel's Back", "Dear Love", "Catch", and "Sally Tomato". CD

Dave Rempis/Matt Piet/Tim DaisyThrow Tomatoes ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2018. New Copy ... $8.99
Two fantastic improvisations from the Chicago scene – both featuring the well-known talents of Dave Rempis on saxes and Tim Daisy on drums – plus the rising genius of Matt Piet on piano! Piet's a name we've only begun to pay attention to – but his bold sense of freedom here really seems to drive the proceedings on even more strongly than we might have guessed – with an urgency that really sets Rempis on fire, who then seems to do the same to the trio – while Daisy balanced beautifully between more sensitive percussion and a full-on attack of the drum kit. Titles include "To Play Is The Thing" and "The Thousand Natural Shocks". CD

Galactic get some heavy production from Dan The Automator – really chunking up their groove with lots of bass on the bottom and plenty of low-end sounds! The approach isn't really hip hop, but it does give the group's homegrown funk approach a sound that fits more closely next to modern sample records in the crates – but the real appeal of the record is the way it manages to do this while still holding a lot of appeal for fans of instrumental funk.
