✨✧ Tom HarrellAlternate Summer ... CD
High Note, 2024. Used ... $9.99
A set that's got a fuller, richer sound than some of the other recent work from trumpeter Tom Harrell – in part because a number of tracks feature Fender Rhodes and organ from Luis Perdomo, as well as guitar from Charles Altura – both players who create these warm colors that shimmer nicely next to the Tom's work in the lead! And there's also some great resonance with the tenorists on the date – Dayna Stephens and Mark Turner – players who alternate tracks, and each play on half the album – next to Ugonna Okegwo on bass and Adam Cruz on drums. Perdomo also plays acoustic piano – and titles are all unique numbers by Harrell, with titles that include "Intermezzo", "Chalcedon", "Heliotrope", "Plateau", "UV", and "Radius". CD

✨✧ Tom HarrellInfinity ... CD
High Note, 2019. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Tom Harrell's got this amazing way of always blowing our mind – always bringing something new to the table, but never in a way that ever sounds gimmicky, or like a throwaway project at all! The quality is really something special – because, especially in recent years, each new album from Harrell always has a distinct voice and vision – one that seems to open up even new chambers of expression for the trumpeter, even after all his many years in music! This time around, there's some great work on both acoustic and electric guitar from Charles Altura – a player whose sense of color and timing really makes for a fantastic balance with the always-great sounds from Harrell on trumpet and flugelhorn. The group's also got some sharper edges from Mark Turner on tenor, and bassist Ben Street and drummer Johnathan Blake have this really compelling way of flowing together that seems to set even the more gentle moments on fire. Titles include "Coronation", "Hope", "The Fast", "Dublin", "Hope", "The Isle", "Duet", and "Taurus". CD

✨✧ Tom HarrellNumber Five ... CD
High Note, 2012. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A bold quintet set from trumpeter Tom Harrell – one that's a bit more back to basics than some of his other recent outings – with an especially strong focus on horn solos spiraling out over the rhythms! Harrell's got a nice bit in his trumpet, and plays some moodier flugelhorn too – sounding great on the mellow numbers – and Wayne Escoffery adds his tenor to the lead too. Danny Grissett is mostly on piano, but plays some Fender Rhodes at points – and rhythms from Ugonna Okegwo on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums often have occasional bop inflections. Titles include "Present", "Right As Rain", "Journey To The Stars", "Preludim", "A Blue Time", "The Question", and "Melody In B Flat". CD

✨✧ Tom Harrell with Esperanza SpauldingColors Of A Dream ... CD
High Note, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful beautiful set from trumpeter Tom Harrell – a record that goes even beyond his other recent gems – and that's saying a lot, given how much we love those albums! The combo on the record features some key vocal work from Esperanza Spaulding – who's sounding quite different here than her more recent sides, and has moved back to using her vocals more like an instrument – soaring out soulfully in a sharp lineup that includes Tom's trumpet and flugelhorn, Jaleel Shaw's alto, and Wayne Escoffery's tenor! This side of Spaulding is really wonderful – and really helps realize the deeper tones and ideas in Tom's wonderful compositions for the record – a set of tunes that include "Velejar", "Phantasy In Latin", "Tango", "State", "Seventy", "Blues 2013", and "Family". ✨✧ Don BradenOrganic ... CD
Sony, 1995. Used ... $1.99
A surprising organ/tenor gem from the 90s – and a really standout set in the career of Don Braden! The set's on a major label, but it's got a soulfully produced groove that makes it feel like some of the best soul jazz on the Muse imprint – really open and flowing, with a sound that shows that the New Jersey sound was alive and well into the 90s! Braden's on tenor, working alongside some guest tenor by David Newman – and the rest of the group features organ by either Jack McDuff or Larry Goldings – plus trumpet by Tom Harrell, guitar by Russell Malone, and some super-solid drum work by either Cecil Brooks or Winard Harper. Titles include "Walkin The Dog", "Brighter Days", "Cousin Esau", "Twister", "Belief", "Organic", and "Saving All My Love For You". CD

Dizzy Gillespie with Phil WoodsDizzy Gillespie Meets Phil Woods Quintet ... CD
Timeless (Netherlands), 1986. New Copy ... $3.99 16.99
Dizzy Gillespie meets the Phil Woods Quintet – a group that already has a great trumpeter in the form of Tom Harrell – which makes the album here a double-horn delight! Dizzy's on trumpet throughout, and Harrell plays both trumpet and flugelhorn – and the pair work well with Woods' alto in the front line, sharing back and forth, and creating a lively interplay between the different voices of their instruments. Dizzy is impeccable – as he always is at this point in his career – and rhythms are nice and tight, thanks to piano from Hal Galper, bass from Steve Gilmore, and drums from Bill Goodwin. Titles include a great reading of Galper's Loose Change" – plus "Terrestris", "Love For Sale", "Oon Ga Wa", and "Whasidishean". CD

✨✧ Vince GuaraldiCharlie Brown Thanksgiving ... LP
Fantasy/LMFP, Early 70s. New Copy ... $27.99 31.99
A long-overdue issue of this jazzy Peanuts classic – music that's delighted ears for decades, yet never got the same sort of commercial release as Charlie Brown Christmas music! As with that work, the music here all comes from the genius of Vince Guaraldi – and given the early 70s recording of the tunes, Vince definitely has updated his style since the 60s – using Fender Rhodes at times, and even having an electric sensibility to his acoustic piano work too – a sense of spacing and timing that's totally great! The core combo features a young Tom Harrell on trumpet, plus Chuck Bennett on trombone, Seward McCain on bass, and Mike Clark on drums – a very cool jazzy group. Vince sings on the wonderful tune "Little Birdie", which has some larger arrangements – and other titles include "Is It James Or Charlie", "Thanksgiving Theme", "Charlie Brown Blues", "Peppermint Patty", "Linus & Lucy", and "Thanksgiving Interlude". This expanded release features lots of great alternates on the themes – and the tune "Clark & Guaraldi", and "Is It James Or Charlie (bonus mix with whistling)". LP, Vinyl record album

Lee Mendelson Film Productions, 1972. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
A wicked 70s soundtrack from Vince Guaraldi – and one that might help make just about any election go a lot more smoothly! There's a few tracks that maybe sound "electiony" – but much of the music is Guaraldi at his jazzy best, including a number of tunes that have Vince using the Fender Rhodes – which he did so wonderfully in later years! There's a few familiar Peanuts theme remakes, but there's also some great original tunes for the score – and a real highlight is the classic reading of "Joe Cool", with a vocal by Vince himself! Other tunes include "Blue Charlie Brown", "Incumbant Waltz", "Oh Good Grief", "Deserted Charlie Brown", "and Cookin Snoopy". Other instrumentation includes trumpet from a young Tom Harrell and woodwinds by Mel Martin – and the package features 25 tracks in all – including a number of unused bonus tracks. CD

Idris MuhammadHouse Of The Rising Sun ... CD
Kudu/King (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99 About March 12, 2025
A surprising jazz funk stunner from drummer Idris Muhammad – part of his great second chapter of work for CTI in the 70s! Idris is working here in a style that's very different than his heavy-footed funky work on Prestige and Blue Note – and while it's easy to criticize him for not keeping the same old breakbeat funk style, it's also important to give him a lot of credit for pushing his vision way past the simple stock style of the earlier days! The record's a very nice set of complicated jazzy grooves – some a bit clubby, but many very nice, and with the kind of sophisticated funk arrangements that were on the best Kudu records. No surprise that Dave Matthews is putting together most of the cuts, save for one excellent groove that's arranged by Tom Harrell. Players include Fred Wesley, Ronnie Cuber, Eric Gale, and Wilbur Bascomb – and titles include "Baia", "Sudan", "Hey Pocky A Way", "Theme For New York City", which is based on the same Chopin haunting tune as Serge Gainsbourg's "Jane B"! Horace SilverSilver 'N Voices ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1976. Used ... $18.99
A beautiful, beautiful record from Horace Silver – one of his great 70s experiments for Blue Note – and a set that has him working in the same "jazz with voices" mode explored by Max Roach and Donald Byrd in earlier years! The core of the set is focused around the great work of Silver's combo – with Tom Harrell on trumpet, Bob Berg on tenor, Ron Carter on bass, and Al Foster on drums – a wonderfully cohesive unit that arcs and turns with all these sweet little shifts – keeping up with the creative rhythms directed from Silver, while cascading through a beautiful range of tones and colors as well! The vocals follow suit beautifully – directed by Alan Copeland, but with a much more soulful approach than his 60s material – bursting forth with this warmth and sense of tone that really matches the instrumentation. Titles include "I Will Always Love You", "Out Of The Night", "Incentive", "New York Lament", "Mood For Maude", and "All In Time". CD

Maybe one of the best-known sessions from the excellent Dutch pianist Rein De Graaff – a set that earns its title by recording in New York – and using a really fantastic lineup that features Tom Harrell on trumpet and flugelhorn, Ronnie Cuber on baritone, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums! The sound is classic hardbop all the way through, with a vibe that wasn't often showing up on jazz records at the time – with even more of an edge than some of Rein's overseas sessions, and maybe the bold, soulful vibe that only the Beehive label was capturing so well during this period! Cuber is tremendous – we love to hear him open on up a date like this – and the young Harrell is fantastic too. Titles include "Wail", "Solar", "81st & 1st", "Fifty Six", and "A Monk's Dream". CD

A really great showcase for the budding talents of Joe Lovano – heard here at a crucial point in his rise to glory on Blue Note! Joe had already been blowing greatness on tenor for years before this set, but these Village Vanguard recordings put Lovano in the same heady space as Joe Henderson or Sonny Rollins at the Vanguard on Blue Note – by really allowing a great sense of open, spontaneous expression that stands as a nice counterpoint to his well-conceived studio work – a very earnest demonstration of Lovano's rich talents as a saxophonist. Joe plays soprano and C melody sax as well – and the group features always-great work on trumpet and flugelhorn from Tom Harrell, plus Anthony Cox on bass and Billy Hart on drums. ✨✧ Helen MerrillBrownie – Homage To Clifford Brown ... CD
Verve, 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
A later tribute to Clifford Brown from Helen Merrill – the vocalist who worked famously with the late trumpeter in the 50s! The feel here is quite different than the Merrill/Brown pairings for Emarcy, but equally dark throughout – handled in a way that often has Merrill's vocals offset by trumpet work from players who include Lew Soloff, Roy Hargrove, Tom Harrell, and Wallace Roney – each of whom add a slightly different flavor to the set, but are also clearly drawing strong inspiration from Brown. Torrie Zito handled arrangements, with that easygoing, mature quality that you'd expect – and rhythm is from the trio of Kenny Barron on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. Tracks include "Daahoud", "Born To Be Blue", "Your Eyes", "Brownie", "Don't Explain", "Largo", "I Remember Clifford", "Memories Of You", and "Joy Spring". CD

Eric Kloss is in the core group alongside Miles keyboards – and his work on alto sax is a treasure – filled with feeling, even at a fast clip – and sweetly soulful on some of the mellower numbers too. The groove here is freewheeling but straightforward – a bit like the Art Blakey style of the Prestige years – in which the band pulsates with a highly rhythmic approach, but the soloists soar on even farther with their own sense of life and energy. The group also features electric bass and a bit of congas, which brings a slightly Latin flavor to a few cuts – and overall, the album's an extremely soulful set that really deserves greater mention. Titles include "Pauletta", "Neptune", "This Masquerade", "Magic Carpet", and "Shapes". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bill EvansWe Will Meet Again ... LP
Warner, 1979. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the few larger group Bill Evans sessions from the later years – an album that features sax and flute from Larry Schneider and trumpet from Tom Harrell – in addition to core trio instrumentation from Bill on piano, Marc Johnson on bass, and Joe LaBarbera on drums. The added horns really make the session sparkle – and although those players aren't on every number in the record, when they do show up they really help change the sound nicely from overly familiar Evans trio modes. Bill plays a bit of electric piano on the set – especially beautifully on the track "Only Child" – and other titles include "Comrade Conrad", "Peri's Scope", "We Will Meet Again", "Bill's Hit Tune", "Laurie", "Five", and "For All We Know". ✨✧ Vince GuaraldiCharlie Brown Thanksgiving (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Fantasy/LMFP, Early 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock

✨✧ Vince GuaraldiYou're Not Elected, Charlie Brown (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Lee Mendelson Film Productions, 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Vanguard/Ace (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of gems from The Players Association – back to back on a single CD! First up is the fantastic first album from The Players Association – a group who may well have gotten their name for the great jazzy musicians in their lineup! Players Association are best known for their disco grooves, but they've got a core sense of instrumentation that's really a cut above – with strong leadership from jazzman Chris Hills – who plays drums, guitar, and keyboards – and other players who include Joe Farrell on tenor and flute, Bob Mover on alto and soprano, Jon Faddis on trumpet, and Mike Mandell on keyboards! Ray Mantilla and Buddy Williams add in some great percussion to the mix – which furthers the spontaneous, jazzy vibe of some of the tunes – and titles includes the funky cut "I Like It", which has a nice break in the beginning, plus the tracks "Let's Groove", "Hustlin", "Moon In Pisces", and a sweet cover of "For The Love Of You". Turn The Music Up is wonderful work from The Players Association – a group who were equal parts jazz funk and equal parts 70s club – with a vibe that's maybe like The Blackbyrds or other Fantasy Records acts at their best! The mighty Chris Hills is at the helm – and the record is overflowing with top-shelf talent from the jazz side of the spectrum – work by Bob Berg on tenor, Tom Harrell on trumpet, and Bob Mover on alto – all with room to solo, and really helping bring a musical maturity to the record that other disco records never seem to have! Titles include "Everybody Dance", "Ride The Groove", "The Closer I Get To You", and "I Wish". CD

✨✧ Horace SilverJune 1977 – Livelove Series Vol 2 ... CD
Promising (Germany), 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare 70s performance from Horace Silver – done during the stretch of his concept albums for Blue Note – but with a style that's much more open and free than any of those great records! The vibe here is a bit like Silver at the start of the 70s – great ideas in the songs, and an even more sophisticated sense of lyricism than his 60s work – which is why we really love Horace so much during this period. But the live performance also allows for even more solo moments – as the tracks are all quite long, and feature beautiful passages from Silver on acoustic piano, plus Tom Harrell on trumpet and flugelhorn, Larry Schneider on tenor, Chip Jackson on bass, and Eddie Gladden on drums. Most tracks are from this great era of Silver – and titles include long takes on "Barbara", "Incentive", "Sophisticated Hippie", "Out Of The Night Came You", and "In Pursuit Of The 27th Man" – plus a long version of "Song For My Father". Blue Note, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully soulful set from Horace Silver – hardly the "with brass" session you might guess from the title, and instead a well-integrated album that really showcases a new level of arranging genius from Horace! The set is heavy on hip horns – with work from Oscar Brashear, Bobby Bryant, and Tom Harrell on trumpets – plus Frank Rosolinon on trombone, Jerome Richardson on alto and soprano sax, Buddy Collette on flute, and Bob Berg on tenor – but these instruments are often wrapped up in this warmly rolling groove driven by the bass of Ron Carter and drums of Al Foster – inherently funky, but much more complicated from a rhythmic perspective – and rolling out beautifully with a really imaginative vibe! Tunes are all originals by Silver – wonderful little numbers filled with passion and life – almost painting in sound, with really rich tones and colors throughout. Titles include "The Sophisticated Hippie", "Dameron's Dance", "Barbara", "Adjustment", "Mysticism", and "Kissin Cousins". LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note (Japan), 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent 70s album from Horace Silver – one that's often overlooked, but which yields of listening joy, once you open it up! The set's got some wonderful modal/spiritual numbers – in a mode that would make the record highly prized if it were issued on Strata East, and which is pretty darn great for Blue Note at the time – easily one of Silver's most righteous moments of the late 70s! The percussion promised in the title really stands out – and helps shape the rhythms with an even more exotic feel than usual – but the set also cooks with some great horn solos too – trumpet by Tom Harrell and tenor by Larry Schneider – both players whose arcing lines really help add a lot of color to the grooves. The whole thing's great – proof that Silver never stopped growing as an artist – and titles include "The Aztec Sun God", "The Mohican & The Great Spirit", "The Gods Of The Yoruba", and "The Spirit Of The Zulu". Wonderful work from Horace Silver – part of a great run of late 70s sides for Blue Note that unlock a whole new side of his soulful talents! The vibe here is different than the previous United States trilogy – still very righteous, with an overt message too – but served up in these wonderfully warm tones – with loads of great woodwind passages over these wickedly angular rhythms – grooves that are somewhat like those Silver first started forging on his 27th Man album! The arrangements are sublime – and on some cuts handled by Silver, but orchestrated by Wade Marcus – with players who include Tom Harrell on trumpet, Bob Berg on tenor, Buddy Collette and Fred Jackson on flutes, and Jerome Richardson on soprano sax. The rhythm section is key, too – and features Ron Carter on bass and Al Foster on drums! Side one features "The Tranquilizer Suite" – with passages that icnlude "Keep On Getting Up", "Time & Effort", and "Perseverance & Endurance" – and side two includes the excellent "The Process Of Creation Suite" – with "Motivation", "Activation", and "Assimilation". Atlantic, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
Just when you thought Prince Paul and Cat Power would never make a record together PRESTO – it's the new Handsome Boy album! HBMS takes a bit more of a chillout tack with this long overdue second opus – with lots of laidback beats and samples, and a surprising amount of live instrumentation! The gleeful, sarcastic comedy of the stellar first album remains intact, with some genuinely amusing skits (including one with Jay Z appearing under the pseudonym Hines Buchanan), and the deep range of guest vocalists isn't as surprising as how strong their work is in the best tunes. It would have been pretty easy for Prince Paul and Automator to find a bunch of interesting names to flesh out their big pop culture frappe, but something else altogether to make trippy hip hop tracks featuring Cat Power and the Hieroglyphics make sense on the same record. A pretty solid set from the most adventurous pseudo duo in the game! Guests include Del The Funky Homosapien, De La Soul, RZA, Lord Finesse, AG, Rahzel, Jazzy Jay, Qbert, Mike Patton, Casual, Hieroglyphics, Grand Wizard Theodore, El-P, John Oates, Pharrell, Kid Koala, and George W. Bush (just kidding). Tracks include "If It Wasn't For You" with De La, "Are You Down With It" with Mike Patton, "The World's Gone Mad" with Del and others, "It's Like That" with Casual, "I've Been Thinking" with Cat Power, "Rock And Roll (Could Never Hip Hop Like This) Pt 2" featuring Lord Finesse, Qbert and others, First. . .And Then" featuring Dres from Black Ship, "A Day In The Life" featuring RZA, AZ and others and more, plus intro/outro by Father Guido Sarducci.
