Bearsville/Rhino, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first really tripped-out albums from Todd Rundgren – a record that makes us think he must have been getting a lot into his head since the time in the studio for Something/Anything! While not a concept album, the record does have a clearly stated "quest for knowledge and quest for love" that kind of colors most of the set – a higher concept that's reached for in the album's array of shorter playful tunes, and ever-changing styles of music. As always, we're still most partial to the gentler, more personal numbers on the set – and these stand out as little oasis between numbers that have a more sonically experimental nature. Titles include a few weird little instrumentals with moogy bits – like "Flamingo" and "Tic Tic Tic It Wears Off" – plus vocal numbers that include "Sometimes I Don't Know What To Feel", "You Don't Have To Camp Around", "Never Never Land", "International Feel", "Just Another Onionhead", "Does Anybody Love You", "Hungry For Love", and "Is It My Name". ✨✧ Todd RundgrenSomething/Anything? ... LP
Bearsville, 1972. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Arguably one of the greatest pop albums of all time – a pure act of genius from Todd Rundgren, and one of the few cases in rock music where two records are actually better than one! The double-length set was Rundgren's third solo effort after the breakup of Nazz – but it's a broad step ahead from the first two, and a strong move into the kind of near-perfect, yet always-human pop that made Rundgren so great in the 70s. Sides one through three of the album were completely done by Todd himself – all instruments, voices, and production handled through the then-new magic of the 16 track studio – and Rundgren's really at his best here, working in the kind of personal modes that make his tunes so great, some of the best of the mainstream singer/songwriter generation. Side four has fuller arrangements and other players coming into the mix, but the core feel of the rest of the record is very nicely preserved – apart from a few tunes that perhaps get a bit too goofy. It's hard to imagine more great pop songs in one album – and the set's overflowing with genius moments that include "Marlene", "I Saw The Light", "I Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference", "It Takes Two To Tango", "Sweeter Memories", "I Went To The Mirror", "One More Day", "Song Of The Viking", and "Hello It's Me". VariousStudio Wizardry Of Todd Rundgren ... CD
Ace (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $14.99 22.99
Todd Rundgren's known to most as a hell of a songwriter, and a singer with surprising charms – but he's also a genius in the studio, with talents that were first demonstrated on all of his early self-produced classics – then shared with some key acts in the 70s and 80s! As with his own music, Rundgren really has a way with making a tune come together – a special ear for getting everything to sound right, but at a level that's simple and understated – so that all the best qualities of a song come out perfectly, but without making you feel like you're being hit over the head by the process behind the music! That quality is on great display here – in a set of 22 numbers that feature Rundgren at the helm, with details that are extrapolated more fully in the detailed notes within – but which come through loud and clear on tunes that include "Baby Blue" by Badfinger, "Long Times Gone" by Felix Cavaliere, "You're Much Too Soon" by Hall & Oates, "Frederick" by Patti Smith, Heaven's Falling" by Cheap Trick, "Jet Boy" by New York Dolls, "One Night Stand" by Janis Joplin, "L5" by New England, "We're An American Band" by Grand Funk Railroad, "Dear God" by XTC, "Something Warm" by Rick Derringer, "Long Road Home" by Fanny, "Fa La Fa Lee" by Sparks, "Piece By Piece" by The Tubes, "Love Is The Answer" by Utopia, "Goodbye" by The Psychedelic Furs, and "She's So Young" by The Pursuit Of Happiness. Mark Moogy KlingmanMoogy (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Capitol/Big Pink (South Korea), 1972. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Mark Klingman may have "Moogy" as a nickname, but he mostly plays acoustic piano on this set – in a rootsy, raspy way that works perfect with his well-crafted vocals! Klingman's a hell of a songwriter too – one with a good ear for personal themes delivered with a down to earth sensibility – but in ways that always point towards the hipper side of the spectrum – the space occupied by guys like Ben Sidran or Randy Newman at the time, with nary a chance of big crossover potential. Todd Rundgren co-produced the record with Mark, and there's definitely some of the charm of his own early albums here – a special sort of magic that really makes us trust Klingman's words on the tunes, in a way that we might not necessarily do with other artists of this nature. Titles include "Me & Richard", "The Man At Ease", "I Can Love", "Just A Sinner", "Tonight I Want To Love Me A Stranger", "Liz When You Waltz", and "Making The Rounds At Midnight". CD

NazzNazz Nazz ... LP
SGC, 1969. Near Mint- ... $14.99
The second full album from Nazz – a set that has Todd Rundgren extending even more dominance over the group through his original songs and arrangements – and, we're willing to guess, a fair bit of production work too – even though that's credited here to the entire band! Rundgren's still not singing lead vocals on most of the tunes, so they've got that slighty more psychedelic feel the group put forth on their debut – but the guitars here have also stepped back a bit, and many of the best tracks have that more fragile, more personal feel that we've always loved in Todd's solo work – even if some of the themes are still a bit varied. Titles include "Hang On Paul", "Rain Rider", "Gonna Cry Today", "Featherbedding Lover", "Kiddie Boy", "Forget All About It", "Not Wrong Long", and "Meridian Leeward". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s red vinyl Rhino pressing. Vinyl has some small bits of paper pressed into the vinyl, but play is not affected. Cover has light wear and is bent at the top left edge.)

Sons Of ChamplinFollow Your Heart ... LP
Capitol, 1970. Very Good+ ... $5.99
A further deepening of the sounds of The Sons – already great on the group's first 2 albums, but here taking a harmonically polished mode that refines their groove even more – and which makes the album's tunes come off totally great! There's a compressed, slightly jazzy feel to some of the work here – one that has the vocals losing the rasp of before, and going for a sweetly crackling sound that's still never too overproduced, and which has a lovely sense of personal presence. At times, we almost hear echoes of some of Todd Rundgren's best solo work, but with more of a group sort of sensibility – and we're really surprised that this album hasn't had a longer life, or why it hasn't at least been rediscovered as a brilliant pop treasure from the early 70s! Titles include "Follow Your Heart", "Children Know", "Before You Right Now", "The Child Continued", "Well Done", and "Beside You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label pressing. Cover has surface wear, waviness from moisture, a name in pen, and light aging.)

A&M/Iconoclassic, 1979. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
One of the real standouts in the late 70s run of records from The Tubes – a set that's not only got the tunes united by a concept, but which also features some impeccable production from Todd Rundgren! The group's fuzz on the guitars is turned up nice – almost like they're trying to give a nod to the new wave generation, while Rundgren ups the catchiness of their tunes, and finds a way to make the whole thing not get bogged down in the larger concept of the record – which is a commentary about television in the modern age. Titles include "TV Is King", "Prime Time", "Getoverture", "I Want It All Now", "No Way Out", "Only The Strong Survive", and "Telecide". CD features the bonus tracks "Dangerous", "Don't Ask Me", "Holy War", and "Dreams Come True". CD

Geffen, 1986. Used ... $2.99
Beautiful later work from XTC – a record that has the group really reveling in that new pastoral sensibility they unlocked with Mummer – on songs that are more slowed down than at their start, with great use of acoustic instrumentation too – all with this well-crafted sense of songwriting that almost seems to preface some of the work to come by groups like High Llamas or Cardinal! There's so many folks who are slavish to the early years of XTC that they often miss the beauty of a record like this – a really cohesive whole that's given some superb production by Todd Rundgren in one of his best 80s moments. Titles include "Dear God", "Dying", "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul", "Big Day", "Another Satellite", "That's Really Super Supergirl", "The Meeting Place", "Summer's Cauldron", and "1000 Umbrellas". VariousThat's The Way I Feel Right Now – A Tribute To Thelonious Monk ... LP
A&M, 1984. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
A great little entry into a genre that got way too overdone and way too cluttered by the end of the 80s – but which was surprisingly fresh at the time of this initial release! The set pays tribute to the late Thelonious Monk, but does so by moving way past his modern jazz roots – and allowing for participation by a variety of artists in a number of different fields. Hal Willner masterminded the set, and does a great job of making unlike artists work well next to each other – really expanding on famous numbers by Monk, but never getting too goofy overall. Titles include "Functional" by Randy Weston, "Four In One" by Todd Rundgren & Gary Windo, "Thelonious" by Bruce Fowler, "Criss Cross" by Shockabilly, "In Walked Budd" by Terry Adams & Roswell Rudd, "Evidence" by Steve Lacy & Elvin Jones, "Ba-Lu-Bolivar-Ba-Lues-Are" by Was Not Was, "Ask Me Now" by Steve Lacy & Charlie Rouse, "Monk's Mood" by Sharon Freeman, "Round Midnight" by Joe Jackson, and "Friday The Thirteen" by Bobby McFerrin and Bob Dorough. There's plenty of other great Lacy work on the set too – and even if you're put off by the presence of non-jazzers on the set, the album's worth it alone for the Lacy tracks! LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeves. Cover has a hype sticker and a Gift Of Music sticker.)

✨✧ UtopiaUtopia ... LP
United Artists/Long Hair (Germany), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Not the Utopia group with Todd Rundgren in the lineup, but an earlier German act who only cut this one album – which itself was sort of a side project away from the sessions for the Wolf City album by Amon Duul II! Utopia shares members, a producer, and a lot of energy with that group – but the result here is a bit different – music that's maybe a bit more personal overall, with some songs that are surprisingly sensitive at times, mixed with some of the fiercer instrumentation you'd expect from the Amon Duul legacy. The whole thing's a great example of prog energy trying to find a more focused energy – and were it not for the various issues with the parent group, Utopia may well have found a greater path forward with this album. Titles include "Nasi Goreng", "Jazz Kiste", "Deutsch Nepal", "The Wolf Man Jack Show", "Alice", and "Las Vegas". LP, Vinyl record album
