✨✧ Lee FieldsProblems ... CD
Soul Fire, 2002. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tight!! Lee Fields, one of the great criminally under appreciated funky geniuses of the 70s is back with another pounding, raw funk classic that still finds the man at the peak of his powers, decades after he first made mark on the funk landscape! This is Lee's first full length effort for Soul Fire, a label that we all know goes to painstaking lengths to carefully carry the torch lit by the People Records scene in the 70s into the future, and it's great to see a titan like Lee do amazing work for a great label that does it purely for the love! Lee is absolutely on fire on all 10 of these tracks, with a Godfather like delivery that knocks us out of our chairs every time, whether it's that fiery funk howl that we love so much, or a smooth, soulful glide on the occasional ballad. He's backed up by a bona fide funky orchestra at Soul Fire Studios that includes TONS of hot drums, propulsive percussion, and some driving conga work that steers things into an afro funk groove on several of the tunes. The group MVP, other than Lee himself, could be multi instrumentalist Leon Michels, whose work on flute, keys, tenor and baritone sax, as well guitar and bass not only helps keep the classic 70s feel going, but keeps things crackling at breakneck speed. This isn't newfangled funk revival, this is the real deal from one of the originators – a 33-minute funk maelstrom that will knock you right out of your chair, and have you restarting it the second it ends! Includes "Problems", "The Right Thing", "Rapping With Lee", "I Don't Know Where I'm Going", and "Honey Dove". Oh, if only all of our heroes remained this vital! CD

✨✧ Lightnin HopkinsBlue Lightnin' ... LP
Jewel, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really nice later set from legendary Texas blues titan Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins – done up for the Jewel label with a bit of the spark that was missing from the hit & miss work he did earlier in the decade for Bluesville! Blue Lightnin' also has a down and dirty style in spots, too – such as on the sinister "Back Door Friend" – the kind of thing that might have put off the academic market his previous label was shooting for! Other titles include "Found My Baby Crying", "Move On Out" (parts 1 & 2), "Fishing Clothes", "Gamblers Blues", "Wig Wearing Woman", "Last Affair", "Daddy Was A Preacher", "Jail House Blues", "I Hate I Got Married", "Lovin' Arms" and more. ✨✧ VariousLong-Lost Honkers & Twangers – Unreleased 60s Gems From The Ventures, Fireballs, Rondels, Titans, & Reveliers – Plus Many Others ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Killer instrumentals from the glory days of the garagey combo – a smoking little set that's very heavy on twangers – those wicked guitar-driven cuts that were often recorded with lots of cool echo and effects! Some of the names here are big ones, but most are smaller and lesser-known groups – and even the stars are represented by rare or unissued tracks – making the whole package as much fun as sorting through a rare pile of rock instrumental 45s from the 60s! And as usual with Ace, there's been plenty of care not just to choose the best tracks, but also provide excellent sound and a rich amount of history behind each number too – something you wouldn't get if you were only looking for 45s. Titles include "White Water" by The Reveliers, "The Psychedelic Worm" by Johnny & The Hurricanes, "Wax Em Down" by The Avantis, "Night Creature" by The Gigolos, "The Spur" by The Ventures, "Car Hop" by The Exports, "Loch Lamond Rock" by The Ramrods, "Flat Tyre" by The Reveliers, "Ghost Train" by The Swanks, and "Showboat" by The Rondels. ✨✧ KraftwerkTour De France (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
EMI/Astralwerks, 2003. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
A return to genius for one of the most important bands of the past 50 years – and a wonderful little record that we'd rank right up there with the best of their albums from the 70s! The album builds off the "Tour De France" single the group first recorded back in the early 80s – a classic tune with a huge influence that unfortunately was never on an album. And while this album bears the title and cover of that original single, the sound and style are a bit different – more in the mode of longer-worked electronic epics like Radio-Activity or Trans Europe Express – particularly the latter one, as this set has Kraftwerk taking a musical tour that matches the famous bicycle race – gliding around the countryside on waves of electronic magic! The whole thing's excellent – as brilliant as we could have hoped – and it's a long-overdue follow-up to one of our favorite tracks! Titles include "Chrono", "Vitamin", "La Forme", "Elektro Kardiogramm", "Titanium", "Aero Dynamik", and "Regeneration". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Madvillain (Madlib & MF Doom)Madvillainy ... CD
Stones Throw, 2004. New Copy ... $8.99 9.98
A Stones Throw sci-fi masterpiece – one that was destined for greatness from conception, but we're still pretty well blown away by the final product! MC Doom and beatmaster Madlib couldn't be better suited for a collaboration. As much as we've dug the best of Doom's material of the last couple years, he's always needed a good editor – and Madlib brings nothing but the best sci-fi sound collages, scratches, and titanically driving funky beats – the grooved out 70s side of 'Lib's personality is wisely given a powder, while in the company of a vocal presence that's as insane as Doom. When it's not so pounding, the sound drops into the kinda gloomy, murky crackle of earliest Wu Tang. This is easily the best album of its kind since Dr. Octagon tore the flood gates open. Essential!!! "The Illest Villains", "Accordian", "Bistro", "Raid" feat Medaphoar, "America's Most Blunted", "Rainbows", "Curls", "Money Folder", "Hardcore Hustle","Fancy Clown", "Supervillain", "All Caps", "Rhinestone Cowboy" and more. Paul McCartney & WingsVenus & Mars ... LP
Capitol, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $16.99
Maybe the greatest moment ever from Paul McCartney & Wings – a set that features killer hits and lesser-known gems – all woven into a fantastic 70s sonic tapestry! The production and presentation of the record are wonderful – the whole thing was virtually a pop art piece when it came out – and Paul's got a way of both being intimate and charming, and helping push the whole group with soaring energy that really made them huge at the time. The album's got great production – and also features guest work from Allen Toussaint, Tom Scott, and Dave Mason. Side one is a non-stop flow of pop genius – woven from the tunes "Venus & Mars", "Rock Show", "Love In Song", "You Cgave Me The Answer", "Magneto & Titanium Man", and "Letting Go" – and side two follows up with so many great surprises – including "Treat Her Gently Lonely Old People", "Medicine Jar", "Spirits Of Ancient Egypt", and "Listen To What The Man Said". Zero dBBongos, Bleeps, & Basslines ... CD
Ninja Tune, 2006. Used ... $1.99
The best work yet from Chris Vogado & Neil Combstock, aka Zero dB – possibly the hardest-hitting, too – with titanically heavy basslines and prevalent Latin-y percussion underneath the blend of jazzy bits, hip hop, electro and house-learned grooves! The overall vibe is really incredible – heavily thumping, but with enough sweetness to keep it from being overly pummelling – and a lot of rich, Latin-accented groove that we weren't anticipating – and that's just the kinda surprise we hoped for! Tracks include "A Pomba Girou" feat Heidi Vogel, "Bongos Bleeps & Basslines", "Conga Madness", "Know What I'm Saying" feat Pase Rock, "Coisa De Gringo" feat Heidi Vogel, "Anything's Possible" feat Voice, "Te Quiro, "On The 1 & 3" and "Sunshine Lady" feat Phoebe. VariousWild Sounds From An Overheated Jukebox – Lux & Ivy Dig Those 45s ... CD
Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
Oh for the glory days of the 7" single – that magical late 50s/early 60s time when it seemed like there was an endless supply of weird and wonderful records all the time – and at prices that allowed them to circulate easily, even if they weren't big hits! (And why are 7" singles so expensive these days?) The package is a fantastic testament to that wonderful musical moment – when you might stumble across a backroom jukebox, stuffed with overlooked gems – just waiting for you to discover them, and get them blasting out of the bassy speaker with the drop of your dime. Few folks know this generation better than Lux and Ivy of The Cramps – a pair who were record collectors before they even made a single of their own – and the set features a stunning 50 rare nuggets – with titles that include "The Mash" by Bud Spudd & The Sprouts, "No Time" by The Titans, "Purr Kitty Purr" by Sid King & The Five Strings, "Time Machine" by The Gamblers, "Little Bitty Girl" by The Memories, "The Little Martian" by Jan Amber, "The Last Meal" by Hurricane Harry, "Hello Schoolteacher" by The 4 After 5s, "Peach Fuzz" by Bob Taylor, "Zindy Lou" by The Mariners, "My Memories Of You" by Yolanda & The Natural, "Wolf Call" by Mark Anthony, "Nameless" by Bob Strauss, "Heartbeat" by The Threeteens, "I Dreamed I Was Elvis" by Sonny Cole & The Rhythm Roamers, "Mental Cruelty" by Larry & Dixie Davis, and "Bodacious" by The US Rockets. ✨✧ Phil Alvin with Sun Ra & Dirty Dozen Brass BandUnSung Stories ... LP
Slash, 1986. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the strongest solo project ever from Phil Alvin – a late 80s effort dedicated to the romping R&B sounds of the 50s – done with great help from both the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the Sun Ra Arkestra! A number of cuts are from the glory days of the R&B single – and the approach moves between tracks with Alvin's combo, one with the Dirty Dozen, and three especially nice tracks with the Arkestra! Given the way that Sun Ra's 80s material was often dipping back into earlier generations of jazz, the group make for a very strong fit with Phil's approach – on titles that include "Someone Stole Gabriel's Horn", "Titanic Blues", "Collins Cave", "Death In The Morning", "Next Week Sometime", and "The Old Man Of The Mountain". Powerful yet playful sax duet session with soprano legend Lol Coxhill and Raymond MacDonald, recorded during Coxhill's last visit to Scotland! Stunningly, this one went unreleased for years despite Lol being in such titanic form at nearly 76-years-old, a frequent enough collaborator with the younger MacDonald for even the most spontaneous and angular blasts between the two to have a cohesive feel. Brilliant stuff. Titles include "Grumpy Ears", "Today The Pond, Tomorrow The World", "Dilettante In Paris", "Upsetting The Neighbours", "If I Like It, I'll Write Back", "Complicated Shoes", "Late Night In Portpool Lane, "Weekend Epiphanies" and more. ✨✧ Budos BandBudos Band III (includes bonus download) ... LP
Daptone, 2010. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. Truly exceptional work from the one of the best bands of their generation! Includes "Rite Of The Ancients", "Black Venom", "River Serpentine", "Unbroken, Unshaven", "Nature's Wrath", "Golden Dune's", "Budo's Dirge", "Raja Haje", "Crimson Skies", "Mark Of The Unnamed" and "Reppirt Yad" (a funked up Lennon/McCartney cover...read it backwards, kids).
