✨✧ VariousBad Education Vol 1 – Soul Hits Of Timmion Records ... CD
Timmion/Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic soul tracks from a label we've been loving right from the start – the long-running Timmion Records – a Finnish imprint with an amazing ear for vintage sounds and funky grooves! We know what you're thinking – Finland is a very unlikely source for great soul music – but the company's also worked with American artists right from the start, and has a deep deep appreciation for the classic modes of the vintage 45 underground – which is why this whole package feels like a stack of rare singles you might have found in the back of a New Jersey record store from the 70s! Most numbers here are mellow or midtempo, and are in a mix of deep and sweet soul modes – all handled with superb instrumentation and production from Cold Diamond & Mink, who ensure that the whole thing has just the right vibe. Titles include "Tell Me That You Love Me" by Jonny Benavidez, "Lost Lost Lost" by Pratt & Moody, "Paint Me In A Corner" by Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators, "Until You're Mine" by Wanda Felicia, "I'm Still A Man" by Willie West, "This Is What Love Looks Like" by Carlton Jumel Smith, "Bad Education" by Bardo Martinez, "Don't Believe You Like That" by Emilia Sisco, "This Love (part 1)" by Bobby Oroza, and "The Scorpio Walk" by Ernie Hawks & The Soul Investigators. Jukka Eskola Soul TrioSteamy ... CD
Timmion (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
An excellent group, and one with a really great concept – a fresh take on a format that was big in the 60s soul jazz scene, but spun out in a very unique way – both in terms of instrumentation, and in terms of the groove! Trumpeter Jukka Eskola heads the trio, which also features Hammond from Mikko Heleva and drums from Toppo Makynen – a mode that was more famously used in tenor/organ combos, like the match of Don Patterson and Sonny Stitt on Prestige Records – but which has never been found in this format before! The trumpet turns out to be a great sound in the frontline, and is given some changed-up rhythms here to work with – not straight soul jazz or funk, and instead a mixture of complicated elements that move the tunes throughout a great range of grooves and colors – really showing all the wonderful sounds that Jukka's been capable of giving us over the years. Titles include "Stick Of A Branch", "Jongo Street", "Tiny B", "Old Stories", "Smash", "Five On Three", and "Steamy". CD

JuhaniHaka Loylyt ... CD
Timmion (Finland), 2008. Used ... $6.99
A hip new set from the Timmion label – a bit of a change from their usual deep funk offerings, but still plenty funky nonetheless! Juhani work in a blend of hip hop production and funky instrumentation – a style that reminds us of some of the best Memphix singles from a few years back – with a similar sense of darkness in most of the grooves, and a simple, economic approach that really makes the work stand out from most other efforts like this. There's plenty of keyboards and beats in the mix, plus other odd instrumentation as well – and titles include "Yopuu", "Beemulla", "Ceemulla", "Vatys Heratys", "Aamulla", "Iso Hiutale", and "Serpentiinimies". Sami Linna QuartetMode For Tomorrow/Umoya ... 7-inch
Timmion, 2019. New Copy ... $3.99 8.99
A gem of a record from Finnish guitarist Sami Linna – just a 45, but one that feels like it's got the depth of a full album! "Mode For Tomorrow" is this beautifully building tune with a mix of modal and spiritual energy – infused with organ by Mikko Heleva, and given this tremendous tenor solo by Jussi Kannaste! Drummer Dana Hall wrote "Umoya" – and his snapping rhythms really keep things moving – as the organ, guitar, and tenor soar to the skies – almost with the energy of an old Larry Young tune! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Carlton Jumel Smith1634 Lexington Avenue ... LP
Timmion, 2019. New Copy ... $20.99 21.99
The long-overdue debut of Carlton Jumel Smith – a soul singer with roots at the Harlem address listed in the title, and who's slowly been working his way around the globe in recent years! Those global travels are key to the success of this set – as Smith works very tightly in Finland's Timmion studios with Cold Diamond & Mink – who bring to his music what the Dap-Tones or El Michels have brought to other singers in the deep funk spectrum! Yet the sound here is definitely different than those efforts, too – as Smith is a soul stylist with a nicely open range – able to hit some late 60s sweet soul moments at times, then going for deeper, more righteous sounds at others – all of which really fit the instrumental range of CD&M, who get a bit of help on horn arrangements from Jukka Eskola, in addition to their usual tight sound at the core. Titles include "Love Our Love Affair", "I'd Better", "You Gonna Need Me", "Help Me", "Woman You Made Me", "We're All We Got", and "I Can't Love You Anymore". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sami LinnaSami Linna Quartet ... CD
Timmion (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sami Linna might look like some sort of Tyrolean hipster on the cover of the album, but his guitar has been behind a fair bit of great funky work on the Timmion label in recent years – which is why it's great to hear him up front here in the lead! A bit like when Eddie Roberts stepped out from the New Mastersounds to record his initial solo records, the Sami heard here is definitely different – jazzier, with a lot more complexity to his guitar work – at a level that, if the whole thing were issued back in the 60s (and with a different cover) would have had Linna standing strongly next to the greats of that generation. His tone is superb, his phrasing is wonderful, and there's a clean jazzy vibe to the record that's very different than other Timmion funk and soul records – as Linna plays in a drums, Hammond, and some mighty nice tenor sax. Tracks are all long – and titles include "Umoya", "Dreamsville", "Black Mountain", "Mode For Tomorrow", and "Clowns". CD

Little AnnDeep Shadows (heavy sleeve pressing) ... LP
Timmion (Finland), Late 60s. New Copy ... About August 7, 2020 (delayed)
Brilliant soul from the Detroit underground of the late 60s – a full set of work by vocalist Little Ann, issued here for the first time ever! You might recognize Ann's name from her appearance on a few of the Ace/Kent Records issues of material by Detroit producer Dave Hamilton over the years – and the work here all comes from those classic collaborations with Hamilton – trapped on tape for many years, always contemplated as a possible Little Ann album – but only issued in full by the funky folks at Timmion Records! The groove here is as offbeat as some of Dave's other great work – not nearly as tight, or uptight, as Motown music – and instead, done with a sly undercurrent of darkness on most numbers, even the mellower ones – almost that earliest mix of Detroit styles that you get on pre-fame singles from Westbound Records artists. Ann's vocals are nice and lean, and slide right into the mix with ease – heartfelt enough to grab us right away, yet without any obvious cliches as well. Titles include "What Should I Do", "Deep Shadows", "Possession", "Who Are You Trying To Fool", "Sweep It Out In The Shed", "The Smile On Your Face", and "I Got To Have You". LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby OrozaThis Love ... CD
Big Crown, 2019. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
A really fantastic full length set from Bobby Oroza – a moody take on blue-eyed soul, with a vibe that's completely its own! Oroza has some fantastic help here – production and music by Cold Diamond & Mink, the combo who've given such a fantastic sound to Timmion Records soul singles over the years! Bobby's got a sweet soul style that's already great – but it really takes off here in the company of the Finnish musicians – who also recorded the whole set with Bobby at the Timmion studios, which makes the whole thing sort of a joint project between the two creative forces! The lean, sinister quality we always love in Cold Diamond & Mink's music really helps shape the sound of the vocals – and Bobby himself also plays guitar and organ on the record. Jimi Tenor adds guests flute in a few spots – and tracks include "Bobby's Mood", "Your Love Is Too Cold", "Keep On Believing", "Maybe Maybe Maybe", "This Love", "Down On My Knees", and "There Can Be No Love". Big Crown, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet instrumental take on the Bobby Oroza debut record – a set that works perfectly well as a deep funk record, even without the vocals – thanks to instrumental help from Cold Diamond & Mink! Bobby's still on the set – playing guitar, organ, and percussion – and gets help from the group on added guitar, bass, and drums – all recorded with a nicely moody vibe at the Timmion studios, with this laidback, slow funk approach that's got a late nite, mellow soul style! Titles include instrumental versions of "Bobby's Mood", "Alone Again", "This Love (parts 1 & 2)", "Deja Vu", "Down On My Knees", and "There Can Be No Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Legere (UK), Late 2000s/2010s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An album dedicated to a contemporary event, but one with a sound that's very much in the vintage of the image on the cover – music that's heavy on rare soul cuts from the 70s, mixed with a few contemporary tracks that have a very similar sound!
