✨✧ Nicole Willis & The Soul InvestigatorsKeep Reachin' Up (Timmion pressing) ... CD
Timmion (Finland), 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
A bold step forward for the deep funk groove of Timmion Records – way more than just a "funk band meets diva" set, and instead a fully-formed soul record that's one of the greatest indies we've heard in years! Nicole Willis has already won our hearts with earlier records, but here she's working with the Soul Investigators to carve out an album of classic brilliance – a 70s-styled set that would easily stand alongside the best from King, Brunswick, or Curtom from years back. And in fact, the Curtom reference is especially strong on the few tracks that feature added strings – used here in a really righteous way that push the sound past simple funky combo backings, and into a rolling, soaring mode that would have made Curtis Mayfield proud! But if you're a fan of harder funk, don't worry at all – because there's plenty of tunes here that maintain a rougher funky 45 groove – mixed in alongside the more ambitious numbers to make for an instant classic of an album. Production is by the enigmatic Didier, backings are by the tremendous Soul Investigators, and even Jimi Tenor gets in a bit of organ and vocals on the set! Titles include "If This Ain't Love", "Keep Reachin Up", "Feeling Free", "Blues Downtown", "My Four Leaf Clover", "A Perfect Kind Of Love", "No One's Gonna Love You", "Holdin On", "Invisible Man", and "Soul Investigators Theme". Jukka Eskola Soul TrioSteamy ... CD
Timmion (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
An excellent group, and one with a really great concept – a fresh take on a format that was big in the 60s soul jazz scene, but spun out in a very unique way – both in terms of instrumentation, and in terms of the groove! Trumpeter Jukka Eskola heads the trio, which also features Hammond from Mikko Heleva and drums from Toppo Makynen – a mode that was more famously used in tenor/organ combos, like the match of Don Patterson and Sonny Stitt on Prestige Records – but which has never been found in this format before! The trumpet turns out to be a great sound in the frontline, and is given some changed-up rhythms here to work with – not straight soul jazz or funk, and instead a mixture of complicated elements that move the tunes throughout a great range of grooves and colors – really showing all the wonderful sounds that Jukka's been capable of giving us over the years. Titles include "Stick Of A Branch", "Jongo Street", "Tiny B", "Old Stories", "Smash", "Five On Three", and "Steamy". CD

Sami Linna QuartetMode For Tomorrow/Umoya ... 7-inch
Timmion, 2019. New Copy ... $3.99 8.99
A gem of a record from Finnish guitarist Sami Linna – just a 45, but one that feels like it's got the depth of a full album! "Mode For Tomorrow" is this beautifully building tune with a mix of modal and spiritual energy – infused with organ by Mikko Heleva, and given this tremendous tenor solo by Jussi Kannaste! Drummer Dana Hall wrote "Umoya" – and his snapping rhythms really keep things moving – as the organ, guitar, and tenor soar to the skies – almost with the energy of an old Larry Young tune! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Carlton Jumel Smith1634 Lexington Avenue ... LP
Timmion, 2019. New Copy ... $20.99 21.99
The long-overdue debut of Carlton Jumel Smith – a soul singer with roots at the Harlem address listed in the title, and who's slowly been working his way around the globe in recent years! Those global travels are key to the success of this set – as Smith works very tightly in Finland's Timmion studios with Cold Diamond & Mink – who bring to his music what the Dap-Tones or El Michels have brought to other singers in the deep funk spectrum! Yet the sound here is definitely different than those efforts, too – as Smith is a soul stylist with a nicely open range – able to hit some late 60s sweet soul moments at times, then going for deeper, more righteous sounds at others – all of which really fit the instrumental range of CD&M, who get a bit of help on horn arrangements from Jukka Eskola, in addition to their usual tight sound at the core. Titles include "Love Our Love Affair", "I'd Better", "You Gonna Need Me", "Help Me", "Woman You Made Me", "We're All We Got", and "I Can't Love You Anymore". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ernie Hawks & The Soul InvestigatorsScorpio Man (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Timmion (Finland), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ernie Hawks looks right out of the 70s on the cover – with his long hair, fringe jacket, and fiercely-held flute – which he mixes here with some great grooves from the Soul Investigators, in a vibe that's maybe even better than classic! The album's all instrumental, and has this fantastic sound that's way different than the usual contemporary funk set – nicely trippy at times, with echo and other effects applied to the instrumentation – and a strong ear for the overall sound, not just the power of each member of the group! Hawks is often out front, soloing with a funky flute sound – but he also handles vibes, pianoman, and trombone – in a very cool lineup that also has Martti Vesala on wah-wah trumpet, and Jimi Tenor on saxophone. All tunes are original, and they're really fantastic – each the kind that if you found on a rare soundtrack or lost jazz album, you'd be willing to pay plenty to own. Titles include "Still Trippin", "Bag Full Of Miracles", "Cold Turkey Time", "Scorpio Walk", "Windy City Blues", "Journey To The Bottom", and "Street Of Tears". LP, Vinyl record album

Little AnnDetroit's Secret Soul ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... About November 27, 2020
Brilliant soul from the Detroit underground of the late 60s – a full set of work by vocalist Little Ann, issued here for the first time ever! You might recognize Ann's name from her appearance on a few of the Ace/Kent Records issues of material by Detroit producer Dave Hamilton over the years – and the work here all comes from those classic collaborations with Hamilton – trapped on tape for many years, always contemplated as a possible Little Ann album – but only issued in full all these many years later! The groove here is as offbeat as some of Dave's other great work – not nearly as tight, or uptight, as Motown music – and instead, done with a sly undercurrent of darkness on most numbers, even the mellower ones – almost that earliest mix of Detroit styles that you get on pre-fame singles from Westbound Records artists. Ann's vocals are nice and lean, and slide right into the mix with ease – heartfelt enough to grab us right away, yet without any obvious cliches as well. Titles include "What Should I Do", "Deep Shadows", "Possession", "Who Are You Trying To Fool", "Sweep It Out In The Shed", "The Smile On Your Face", and "I Got To Have You". Note that the record was mostly issued in a different form by Timmion Records – as the record Deep Shadows – save for the mixes of "What Should I Do" and "I Got To Have You" – both of which are unissued mixes that appear here for the first time. Bobby Oroza/Cold Diamond & MinkThis Love – Instrumentals (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Big Crown, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
A sweet instrumental take on the Bobby Oroza debut record – a set that works perfectly well as a deep funk record, even without the vocals – thanks to instrumental help from Cold Diamond & Mink! Bobby's still on the set – playing guitar, organ, and percussion – and gets help from the group on added guitar, bass, and drums – all recorded with a nicely moody vibe at the Timmion studios, with this laidback, slow funk approach that's got a late nite, mellow soul style! Titles include instrumental versions of "Bobby's Mood", "Alone Again", "This Love (parts 1 & 2)", "Deja Vu", "Down On My Knees", and "There Can Be No Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bobby OrozaThis Love ... LP
Big Crown, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really fantastic full length set from Bobby Oroza – a moody take on blue-eyed soul, with a vibe that's completely its own! Oroza has some fantastic help here – production and music by Cold Diamond & Mink, the combo who've given such a fantastic sound to Timmion Records soul singles over the years! Bobby's got a sweet soul style that's already great – but it really takes off here in the company of the Finnish musicians – who also recorded the whole set with Bobby at the Timmion studios, which makes the whole thing sort of a joint project between the two creative forces! The lean, sinister quality we always love in Cold Diamond & Mink's music really helps shape the sound of the vocals – and Bobby himself also plays guitar and organ on the record. Jimi Tenor adds guests flute in a few spots – and tracks include "Bobby's Mood", "Your Love Is Too Cold", "Keep On Believing", "Maybe Maybe Maybe", "This Love", "Down On My Knees", and "There Can Be No Love".
