Davie Allan & The Arrows/The Hands Of TimeWild Angels – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Tower, Late 60s. Very Good- ... $3.99
Classic kitschy biker material from Davie Allan and The Arrows – one of the best-ever groups to play on schlocky soundtracks during the 60s! There's lots of guitar and lots of fuzz – and guessing from the photos of the movie, the music was the best thing about it! Toddler Mike Curb put the whole thing together – but the vibe is much more like some of Allan's excellent guitar instrumental albums of the time – apart from the few more standard rock band tracks you'd find in Curb's other productions from the period. Most of the album's instrumental Arrows work – and tracks include "The Chase", "Bongo Party", "Blues Theme", "Theme From Wild Angels", and "The Unknown Rider" – plus the vocal cuts "Theme From The Wild Angels" by The Visitors and "Midnight Rider" by The Hands Of Time. Part Time HeroesMeanwhile ... CD
Wah Wah 45s (UK), 2008. Used ... $6.99
The first full album from Part Time Heroes – a group who've done some remixes and singles over the past few years, but who really step forward strongly with this set! There's a depth here we never would have guessed from their clever cuts before – a fuller, richer sound that draws from jazzy roots, but also inflects them with some soundtrack-like influences too – putting things together in a careful blend of acoustic instrumentation and electric elements – often with a warm feel that's strongly soulful. Keyboards really shine on the set – there's a lot of Rhodes here – but there's also work on trumpet, flute, and tenor that stands out too – not used in straight jazz ways, but to inflect some organic colors on the tunes. Vocals are by Laura Vane, Jono McCleery, Liane Carroll, and Bridgette Amofah – but a few of the tracks are instrumental too. Titles include "Stop Fade Blur", "Realise", "Shadowlands", "Sun Will Shine", "Method", "What's The Noise/What It Could Be", "In My Soul", and "Angels Fly". CD

Jimmy Radway & The Fe Me Time All StarsDub I ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
Let's forget for a second that Jimmy Radway's Dub I is just about one of the hardest to get pieces of Jamaican wax, so we can talk about what a fierce batch of rhythms we've got here! Add ET's deft hand at the console and you've got one mighty, mighty batch of drum and bass, with some nice licks of horns, keys and guitars dipping and ducking into the reverb-drenched dub stew, and you know you're in a for a treat! Releases on Radway's Fe Me label, as well as his productions for other small Jamaican indies are sought after for their deep roots sound, but unfortunately the original issue of this incredible dub set barely saw the light of day. Pressure Sounds keeps up the pressure with this long overdue reissue, and the band here includes Carlton Barrett, Family Man, Organ D Downie, Bobby Ellis, Dirty Harry, Cedric Im Brooks, Tommy McCook and Vin Gordon. 10 tracks in all, including "Black Rights", "Cinderella", "Micron Way", "Hell & Sorrow", "Awn Yah!", "Mother Liza", "Back To Africa", "She's Mine", "Wicked Have To Feel It" and "Black I Am". King (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $9.99
Groovy vocals from 70s Japan – a very hip male quintet, and one with the same harmony sound as The Four Freshmen or The Hi-Los! Given the date of the record, the tunes are a bit more contemporary – but still swung by the group with a very jazzy style, one that often has sweet small combo backings stepping along with the vocals! There's a bit of a bossa influence going on with the instrumentation – especially on the percussion, and the album's use of flute and organ – and titles include "Windows Of The World", "Call Me", "The Look Of Love", "The Girl From Ipanema", "Yesterday", "Strangers In The Night", and "Theme From Un Homme Qui Me Plait". Sublime harmony soul – written and produced by Leroy Hutson! "This Love" has a spare, spacey sound – tripping along in a great mellow vein, with the vocals cascading over the top of the cut! The second essential LP from the Time that would solidify Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' position as a force to be dealt within commercial R&B for years to come, cut during the early 80s, when Minneapolis seemed like it was exploding at the seams with great music. With Morris Day's nice extended dance cut "The Walk" featuring a nice popping beat, plus the excellent and very Prince sounding slow jam "Gigolo's Get Lonely Too" and the percolating pre-New Jack funk of "777-9311". John AddisonSmashing Time ... LP
ABC, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Mod 60s all the way – as the film stars Michael York, Rita Tushingham, and Lynn Redgrave! The score is by John Addison, and actually more than half of the numbers are vocal ones – featuring the girls singing in series of whimsical tunes that are sort of a 60s take on the Merry Old England style. There's a few nice mod numbers, though – including the really great "Day Out", which kind of tipples and soars in a nice way, sounding almost like a lost tune from El Records! Other tracks include "Carnaby Street", "While I'm Still Young", "New Clothes", "Jabberwock March", "Baby Don't Go", "Can't Help Laughing", and "Pie Fight". LP, Vinyl record album

Coral, 1957. Very Good- ... $1.99
A great large group project from arranger Manny Albam – one that teams him up with "jazz greats" of the east coast scene, in a really hard-swinging set of tracks that showcase some wonderful solo work! Manny's working here with a set of players who are well-chosen for their ability to work strongly in an ensemble, yet also break out with strong solo work when the moment comes – and the lineup includes Gerry Mulligan, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, and Art Farmer – with rhythm by the trio of Hank Jones, Milt Hinton, and Osie Johnson. The tracks are long, with more room for soloing than usual on this sort of album – and nearly all of them are originals by Manny. Titles include "Minor Matters", "Blues From Neither Coast", and "Latined Fracture". LP, Vinyl record album

Rashied Ali QuintetFirst Time Out – Live At Slug's ... LP
Survival, 1967. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99 46.99
A fantastic rare performance from drummer Rashied Ali – a musician who's best known for his work with John Coltrane during his later years, but who steps out here beautifully as a leader on his own! Ali's tremendous here – effortlessly non-stop on the drums – a player who seems unable to rest even for a minute – with that sense of boundless imagination that really helped set Coltrane free on their recordings together – fused here with contributions from a very unusual quintet that includes Ramon Morris on tenor, Dewey Johnson on trumpet, Stanley Cowell on piano, and Reggie Johnson on bass! The energy is maybe a rawer step to the side of the ESP generation, and definitely points the way towards the loft jazz scene that Rashied would help form and be such an important part of in the 70s – on titles that include "Study For As Salaam Alikum", "Composition 1", "Ballade", and "Composition 2". An amazing record that's as powerful as the political message of the title – the hippest record ever cut by Amiri Baraka, and that's saying a heck of a lot! Baraka delivers a long and complex set of poetic reflections on the state of Black America, spiritual awakening, and political redemption – set to musical backings that shift from funky, to jazz, to avant, and back again. Players on the set include Gary Bartz, Lonnie Liston Smith, Idris Muhammad, and Reggie Workman – and there's a host of additional players, percussionists, and vocalists that join Amiri in the delivery of his message. Titles include "Answers In Progress", "Peace In Place", "Bad News For Your Highness", "Was Gon Happen", "All In The Street", "Pamoja Tutashinda", and "Pull The Covers Off". Epic, 1987. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Seminal work from the lovely Basia – and an album that's a wonderful hybrid of jazz, soul, and pop – all put together at a level that really goes beyond most of her contemporaries! There's a vibe here that's almost like Swing Out Sister at their best – catchy, but never cloying – and done in an 80s style that refers strongly back to 60s and 70s styles, yet still keeps things quite contemporary overall. And although most of the tunes are pretty poppy, they're also pretty great, and really hold up over the years – thanks to slight undercurrents of jazzy instrumentation, of the sort you'd get from Brit artists like Working Week or Sade. Titles include "Promises", "From Now On", "Freeze Thaw", "How Dare You", "Astrud", and "Miles Away". LP, Vinyl record album

We totally dig Basie's work from the mid 60s! He was working with Quincy Jones at the time – and Quince laid down some very soulful arrangements that used the best jazz elements of the Basie group to turn out some great pop instrumental tracks with a very groovy sound. This album's a perfect example of that format, as it features some great Basie sidemen, grooving nicely to Quincy's hip swinging arrangements of pop material like "Walk, Don't Run", "Fly Me To The Moon", "This Could Be The Start Of Something Big", and "One Mint Julep". ✨✧ Black HeatNo Time To Burn ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good+ ... $34.99
A stone classic from Black Heat – the group's second album, and even tighter than their first! The group's size has dropped a bit between albums – but that only helps them cook even more – dropping a bit of the horn section from before, which allows even more emphasis on their razor-sharp rhythms! There's a slight hint of Afro Funk in some of the rhythms – and the keyboards cook with lots of sweet clavinet lines – mixed with a production style that features some bubbling electronic elements that remind us a lot of that crazy "magic bag" that was used by the Lafayette Afro-Rock Band. That group might be a good point of comparison, but the band also shares a lot of Kool & The Gang's ensemble funk style – especially on their cover of "Love The Life You Live" – which they burn here beautifully! Other tracks include "Super Cool", "M&M's", "Rapid Fire", "You Should Have Listened", "Times Have Changed", and "Check It All Out". LP, Vinyl record album

Chris BowdenTime Capsule ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". ✨✧ Chambers BrothersTime Has Come ... LP
Columbia, 1967. Very Good+ ... $8.99
One of the biggest albums ever from The Chambers Brothers – a set that helped them cross over big into the mainstream – shaking off their previous folksy roots with a rumbling approach to psychedelic soul! The record's got a much heavier groove than any of the group's previous work – a way of hitting a track that still holds onto their gospel-influenced roots, but which also brings in plenty of the fuzzier, funkier touches that were sparking in soul music during the late 60s – especially over at Columbia Records, where their labelmate Sly Stone was capturing a big audience with a very similar sound. The record features the full-length version of the group's massive "Time Has Come Today", an excellent psychedelic soul number that's been lifted for movies and TV shows more times than we can count – and other tracks include "People Get Ready", "Please Don't Leave Me", "In The Midnight Hour", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", "All Strung Out Over You", "I Can't Stand It", "So Tired", and "Uptown". Gene ChandlerThere Was A Time (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Brunswick/Demon (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A soaring, burning set from Gene Chandler – completely different than his early hits, and a key point in the transformation of Chicago soul in the 60s! Gene's always had a heck of a great vocal range – and he really gets a chance to use it to best effect on this album of jaunty and groovy little tracks – tunes that bounce around with that majestic Chi-soul style of the late 60s, all produced to perfection by the great Carl Davis! The sound is sublime – a pulling together of so many different strands into one bold, proud sound – sophisticated yet soulful, and with a rhythmic component that really sets the album apart from the pack. And even when Gene's singing tunes that you may know from other singers' hits, he does a tremendous job of transforming them – recasting them into his more mature groove, and managing to funky them up in ways we wouldn't expect! Evidence to this is the album's great version of James Brown's "There Was A Time" – which is followed by loads of other great cuts, including "Cowboys To Girls", "Fooling Around", "Pit Of Loneliness", "Never Gonna Give You Up", and "Laughter To Tears". Edsel (UK), 1980s. New Copy 7CD ... $58.99
A huge batch of work from Change – all the group's classic albums from the 80s, plus some great work from later years too – all with bonus tracks added to most of the records! First up is Glow Of Love – the classic debut from Change – and the start of an amazing run of groovers in the early 80s! The set's got a tight, jazzy feel throughout – a stripped-down approach to disco modes, with the same focus on the basslines that you'd find in work by Chic – but a style that's almost even more instrumentally focused overall, given the great range of studio players who worked on the set. Yet there's also some key vocal moments, too – work by Luther Vandross that really helps make some of the best tracks sparkle, and which went onto catapult Vandross into a rich solo career on his own. Next is Miracles – a brilliant second set from Change – working here without Luther Vandross on lead vocals, but hardly missing a beat at all! As before, the basslines are at the core of the set – a sweet stripped-down approach that brings even more focus onto the bottom of the groove for early 80s dancefloors – with loads of numbers that step along in a really groovy mode – one quite far from the cliches of disco, and inflected by loads of jazzy elements that keep things fresh over the years! Vocals are by James Robinson – previously with Lonnie Liston Smith – Diva Gray, and Jocelyn Shaw. Sharing Your Love is sweet modern soul from this great group – one of the brightest points in major label soul during the early 80s! Change, ironically, is a group that went through a number of line-up changes, even in their prime – with the tight, clubby, yet genuinely soulful production a constant. This record is made all the better for the beautifully soulful dual lead vocals of James Robinson and Deborah Cooper. The tracks have deeply layered live instrumentation – keyboards, guitar, percussion, horns and strings – blended seamlessly with early 80s production touches. This Is Your Love is an overlooked set from Change – a record that possibly wasn't as hit-worthy as some of their previous efforts – yet one that still had the group very much at the top of their game! By this point, Change had really evolved past being just a studio project, into a rock-solid soul group with a definite ear for a groove – particularly the tight, lean sort of rhythms that percolated in the post-Chic era – making a perfect fit for the slightly jazzy production of the record. Bassbits and beats drive most of the rhythms, but there's still a nice degree of warmth – and vocals are handled by Deborah Cooper, James Robinson, Rick Brennan, and Timmy Allen – who each seem to get their moment in the spotlight, furthering the well-rounded sound of the record. Next is Change Of Heart – a game-changing album from Change – a real breakthrough for the early 80s international soul combo! Change Of Heart has some great production by Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis – and on top of that, it's perhaps the best set of songs the group had recorded to to date. Jam/Lewis wrote half the tunes and produced most of the album, which is front-loaded with some of the best of them. Turn On Your Radio is not nearly as well-known as their first few hits, but still in that all-solid approach to the groove that was the Change trademark during the early 80s! The sound is a bit more stripped down than before – tight beats and keyboards, mostly in a mellow to midtempo mode – all topped with vocals from male and female members of the group! Change still have a great way with a hook here – an approach to soul that's tight and professional, yet not nearly as cloying as some of the chart-climbing acts of their generation. And as before, the keyboards are almost as great as the vocals – with slight jazzy inflections that warm up the tunes nicely! Last up is Love 4 Love – a 2018 comeback for Change – still sounding great all these many years later, but in a slightly different way! The balance between all elements here is fantastic – as the music has all the best parts of the group's earlier music, but also updates the sound a bit – in the way that a combo like Incognito or Brand New Heavies were updating older soul music back in the 90s, by grabbing all the strongest parts of the past, and fusing them into a fresh lean groove. The songs are upbeat, positive, and full of the kind of catchy hooks that Change always did so well! Box set features 78 tracks in all – with bonus tracks added to most albums! CD

A mighty big party from tenor giant Arnett Cobb – a player who always blew strongly in other settings, but really hit his height on these albums for Prestige! The record is a perfect mix of Cobb's bluesy roots and a more sophisticated modern jazz setting – with support from a crack rhythm combo of Ray Bryant on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – plus the special addition of Ray Barretto on congas, who brings in this rolling kick that definitely opens things up to the party atmosphere in the title – even when things are mellow! Most numbers have a open, soulfully blowing feel – and titles include "Slow Poke", "Lonesome Road", "Party Time", and "Blues In the Closet". CD

A classic set of jazz vocals by Blossom, recorded at Ronnie Scott's nightclub when she was living in London during the mid 60's. The set's got a nice intimate feel, and is one of Blossom's best-ever jazz recordings. The record has little of the cocktail sound that marred some of her other releases, and more of the swinging jazz piano and vocals that you find on her best work. Blossom's voice is as unique as always, and the set's got some great groovy numbers, like "I'm Hip", "Once Upon A Summertime", "When In Rome", and "The Shape Of Things". Very nice vibe, with a good live feel and lots of interaction with the audience. CD

Big Break (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99
A career-spanning look at the music of Delegation – one of the few UK soul groups of the 70s who could go head-to-head with the best American acts of the time! Delegation have this razor-sharp style that almost prefaces 80s groove – a mode that was born in the disco generation, but which is much leaner overall – and really well-suited to the vocal approach of the trio – who themselves are maybe tighter and hipper than a good deal of their contemporaries! By the time the 70s were drawing to a close, Delegation had really grown into something wonderful – and you'll hear a great evolution in sound and style on this massively-packed set – which includes early work for the State label, plus bigger sides for Ariola and Mercury – including a few single mixes too. 33 titles in all – with tracks that include "Turn On To City Life", "12th House", "It's Your Turn (12" mix)", "Heartache No 9 (12" mix)", "Oh Honey (12" mix)", "Stand Up", "Sho Nuff Sold On You", "Let Me Take You To The Sun", "Mr Heartbreak", "Gonna Bring The House Down", "Feels So Good", "Dance Prance Boogie", "Singing (12" mix)", "I Figure I'm Out Of Your Life", "I Wantcha Back", "Tell Her", "Welcome To My World", "We Can Make It", and "Someone Oughta Write A Song". Sterns (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
Passionate, legendary and feverishly played music from Senegal's great Etoile De Dakar – an ultra important group previously anthologized by Sterns, but the the label outdoes itself once again – a great selection of material the group recorded between 1979 and 1981! It's the roots of the mbalax genre – a cross cultural blend of African, Latin and Western influences and traditions that's some of the most captivating dance music made in any region these past few decades. Singer Youssou N'Dour would of course go on to be a pivotal figure in the worldwide popularily of African music, and other members of Etoile De Dakar have done great things, but the music here is as exciting to us as just about anything we've heard by all involved. Several tracks have never been officially released outside of Senegal before now. Disc 1 features material from 1979-1980: "Theily", "Dom Sou Nare Bakh", "Esta China", "Jalo", "Dagotte", "Dounya", "Kine Kine" and more. Disc 2 features material from 1980-1981: "Tolou Badou N'Diaye", "Yalaye Dogal", "My Wa Wa", "Diankha Demal", "Titeur", "Maleo" and more. 2 1/2 hours of music in all with the always exceptional Sterns attention to detail and reverence for this excellent and stylistically pioneering music from Senegal – with a 23 page booklet with solid notes and rare photographs. Bill EvansSome Other Time – The Lost Session From The Black Forest (2 X 180 gram pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
MPS/Resonance, 1968. New Copy ... On August 29, 2020
Never-heard studio work from the great Bill Evans – not another one of those many (and great) live performances from overseas – but a well-conceived, beautifully recorded set of tracks that were done for MPS Records in their famous studios in the Black Forest! The group here is Evans sublime trio with the great Eddie Gomez on bass and a young Jack DeJohnette on drums – perfect players for completely reworking the sound of the jazz piano trio, with all the new ideas that Bill had bursting forth at the time – and this material is the only studio session by the group, recorded right after their famous live appearance at Montreux in 1968 (documented on a well-known album on Verve.) The set's a double-length outing – recorded with the kind of crisp, clear sound that MPS brought to its other classic piano albums of the time by artists like Hampton Hawes or Tete Montoliu. The whole thing's wonderful – and Gomez has a wonderful presence in the mix – as the trio really shines on titles that include "Wonder Why", "Green Dolphin Street", "These Foolish Things", "Walkin Up", "Turn Out The Stars", "Very Early", "You Go To My Head", "Lover Man", and "Baubles Bangles & Beads". (Note: Record Store Day 2020 has been rescheduled to separate special release days of August 29, September 26 and October 24. The specific release date for each previously announced title is yet to be announced and subject to change. Titles are in limited supply – and will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago on August 29, September 26 and October 24 only if it is safe and responsible to open the store, with Covid-19 shelter in place orders no longer in place. Ace (UK), Late 50s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A hip assortment of hard-wailing tunes all put together by New York DJ Alan Freed – part of his brief recording career for Coral Records, where he worked with some surprisingly hip artists! Most of the material here was originally issued under the names of Alan Freed Rock N Roll Big Band or The King's Henchmen – both groups that were really studio assemblages headed by Freed, but featuring some very heavy tenor work from King Curtis and Sam "The Man" Taylor – both of whom really bring a lot to the set! Other key players include Ernie Hayes on piano and Kenny Burrell on guitar – the latter of whom plays in a surprisingly rocking vein that's quite different than his Blue Note work. Arrangements are likely by Sammy Lowe, Leroy Kirkland, and/or Ernie Wilkins – and the material is a nice mix of swinging R&B instrumental styles from the 50s! CD features 24 tracks in all – including "Homework", "Two Good Guys", "Street With A Beat", "Cool Papa", "All Tore Up", "Tow Head", "Fandango Rock", "Gosah", "Shufflin", "Night Ride", "Flip Flap", and "Big N Bad". Things lay out a bit more introspectively on the shorter last track – which has a slightly airier tone overall. Titles include "No Time Left", "Uhmla", and "Circle". LP, Vinyl record album

Lefty FrizzellTime Out For The Blues ... CD
Southern Routes, 1950s. Used ... $4.99
A superb collection of early Columbia Records material from Lefty Frizzell – all pulled from that time when Lefty was helping revolutionize country music with his unique vocal approach! Frizzell was one of the first to really bend and inflect his vocals – in the way that so many other country singers of the 60s and 70s would later borrow from his influence, but never handle with the kind of clarity of vision you can find in these recordings. While later artists might get lost in their twists and turns, Frizzell was always a visionary singer – and able to put just the right sort of bend to a tune to underscore the subtle, but powerful emotion in the lyrics – a quality that comes through very well on this classic collection of singles and lesser-known gems. Titles include "Don't Let Her See Me Cry", "Time Out For The Blues", "A Few Steps Away", "Looking For You", "Silence", "The Darkest Moment", "Forbidden Lovers", "Cigarette & Coffee Blues", "I Feel Sorry For Me", "So What Let It Rain", and "No One To Talk To But The Blues". A great little session – ostensibly a tribute to Clifford Brown, but way more than that! The set's actually an excellent soul jazz session – hardly the boppish affair you might guess from the title, and instead a deep-feeling set of jazz with some surprisingly spiritual touches. Golson's at his later hip best here – and is recording with a sextet that features Woody Shaw and Freddie Hubbard on trumpets – supported by a massive rhythm section that includes Kenny Barron on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Ben Riley on drums! The album's a great one if you dig Woody Shaw – and Hubbard's playing is a real treat too, with that stretched out later sound he did so well after the 70s electric years. The album's definitely a gospel record, but it resonates with those rare efforts on labels like Stax or Jewel, which could bring in musical currents from the secular world, to really help shape the spiritual message – opening things up way past the doors of the church, so that the positive spirit and sense of rebirth can spread out and touch the rest of the world. These guys are still very young, and we expect that we'll be hearing great things from them in years to come – but we're already plenty pleased with the results here, on tunes that include "Am I Doing Enough", "Oh Yes He Will", "Motherless Child", "Shine On Me", "Brighter Day", "Wash Me Lord", "On The Right Road", and "If You Can't Make It Through A Storm". "I'm Just Passing Time" is sublime harmony soul from Melvin Hicks & The Versatiles – a tune with a slow but hard drum beat at the bottom – which paces things out as the harmonies soar to the skies with the strings! "Now Girl" is from the Memphis vaults of Goldwax Records – but the tune's got an equally great sweet soul vibe, maybe a slightly deep soul take on east coast group sounds of the time! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Earl HinesOnce Upon A Time ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
One of our favorite records by Earl Hines – a hip little comeback set, recorded in the mid 60s with an Ellingtonish lineup that includes Clark Terry, Cat Anderson, Ray Nance, Lawrence Brown, Jimmy Hamilton, and Johnny Hodges. Hines' piano is certainly a strong force in the record, but even more delightful is the solid feel of the players overall – working with that complete coherence found in the best 60s sides by Duke, but touched here with some of Hines' sprightly approach to the melody. Titles include "Once Upon A Time", "Black & Tan Fantasy", "You Can Depend On Me", "Hash Brown", and "Fantastic That's You". CD
