Tim Berne's SnakeoilDeceptive 4 ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2020. New Copy 2CD ... $29.99 32.99
There's nothing deceptive about this quartet – as the group work here live, completely unfettered – with the kind of honest, open interaction that have made Snakeoil one of the greatest musical contributions from reedman Tim Berne! The lineup has a special sort of edge – no bass, and lots of interplay between Berne's alto and the clarinets of Oscar Noriega – reed lines that on their own would be enough, but which get exactly the kind of right support from the piano of Matt Michell and drums of Ches Smith – all four members often working together in these sonic clusters that really reflect their long-running understanding of each others strengths and talents! The tracks here are all nice and long – performed live at Firehouse – and titles include "OCDC", "Moornoats", "Perception", "Deception", "Seven", "Scanners", and "Hemphill". CD

ECM, 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
Saxophonist Tim Berne has found a great recent home in his Snakeoil group – combo that allows him to try out many different tones and colors, really pushing his music forward with a freshness that it maybe hadn't had in previous years! Berne's sharp-edged at the head of the group on alto – alongside Oscar Noriega on clarinet and bass clarinet, Ryan Ferreira on guitar, Matt Mitchell on piano and electronics, and Ches Smith on drums, vibes, percussion, and timpani – an instrumental mix that's often used in these very unusual, very compelling ways – sometimes blocking out spaces in sound with unusual combinations of elements, often with more surprising brightness than the darker or more obtuse moments you might expect. Titles include "Hora Feliz", "Stingray Shuffle", "Incidentals Contact", "Prelude One/Sequel Too", and "Sideshow". CD

Tim Berne & Matt MitchellOne More Please ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2022. New Copy ... $17.99 19.98
An intimate set of duets between these two top-shelf improvisers – both of whom work together in the Snakeoil band of Tim Berne, but who sound even better here in more airy, open territory! Berne blows alto, Mitchell handles piano, and the results are wonderful – introspective, but very human and open too – never too "arch" to let a moment of feeling or two into the mix – as the pair have a way of expanding the space between them with just a few simple turns of phrase or moments of action! Titles include "Middle Seat Blues/Chicken Salad Blues", "Motian Sickness", "Rolled Oats/Curls", "Oddly Enough/Squidz", "Rose Colored Missive", "Purdy", and "Number 2". CD
