✨✧ De La SoulArt Official Intelligence – Mosaic Thump ... CD
Tommy Boy, 2000. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
All hits and almost no misses – starting with "Oooh", easily the best single of the '00, featuring some nice quotes from classic hip hop tracks ranging from the Funky 4 + 1 to Mos Def, and some of Redman's best verses in a while. De La Soul basically started the whole skits-between-songs concept, or at least they perfected it, and (unlike too many other artists) here they get it right again – even the three hilarious "Ghostweed" skits featuring cameo appearances from Pharoahe Monch, Q-Tip, and Black Thought hold up to repeated listenings. Also includes "My Writes", "Thru Ya City", "All Good?", 'Words FromThe Chief Rocker" and the "Art Of Getting Jumped" – 17 tracks in all. CD
(Out of print, digipack has some light edgewear.)

✨✧ White StripesIcky Thump (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Third Man, 2007. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The last album in The White Stripes incredible late 90s to mid 00s run – and they really went out on an epic high note – one of their very best records! As kicked off by the classic title tune, this one goes on to be fully connected to their raw roots, but committed with a bigger, more full-bodied sound, carrying over the depth of instrumentation they'd been building in over the years but still really honing in on the raging, fuzzy guitars. Classic! Includes "Icky Thump", "You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do What You're Told)", "300 MPH Torrential Downpour Blues", "Conquest", "Bone Broke", "Little Cream Soda", "I'm Slowly Turning In To You", "Catch Hell Blues", "Effect And Cause" and more. ✨✧ TierraCity Nights (with bonus track) ... CD
Boardwalk/Thump, 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A classic bit of Latin soul from the west coast scene – a set that's got all the cool, classy vibe you'd expect from the image of Tierra up in the hills above LA! The set's a great summation of all the interest in soul styles that was brewing up in east LA during the 60s and 70s – a some cuts update that scene's love of sweet soul music, while others bring in heavier Latin percussion to offer up a west coast take on the Latin disco modes of New York – but in ways that are leaner and more funk-based overall! The whole thing's a nice step forward from the Cali Latin soul generation of Azteca, War, and earlier groups – and titles include "Street Scene", "Memories", "Latin Disco", "Givin' Up On Love", "Time To Dance", and "Zoot Suit Boogie". CD features the bonus track "Latin Disco (extended)". CD

Choklate feat Chali 2NaWaitin' (orig voc, inst, voc w/Chali 2Na)/Wish I Hadn't Told You (voc, inst) ... 12-inch
Kajmere, 2005. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $7.99
A fine couple of tracks from San Diego's Choklate – featuring production by Vitamin D – a name we're happy to see every time it pops up! "Waitin'" and "Wish I Hadn't Told You" both rock a contemporary indie soul sound with a hip hop thump. The former find's Choklate delivering relaxed, but vibrant vocals over a punchy, JB's-styled horn sample that flirts with bit of a soul jazz influence. The flip is crafty slow jam that fits the archetype without falling into cliche. Nice stuff – bring on the full length! "Bigger Than You" by Choklate also approaches a tight soul jazz sound, with more ground in natural soul. "Tread Lightly" by N8E 12-inch, Vinyl record

Al GreenLove Ritual – Rare & Previously Unreleased 1968 to 1976 ... CD
Hi Records/Fat Possum, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
A selection of earlier Al Green numbers issued originally at the end of the 70s – with new mixing by Willie Mitchell, who'd produced all the original sides. Titles include "Love Ritual", which is a nice groover with some congas in the mix giving the whole thing an earthier thump under the trademark 70s Hi Records sound – and ultimately, upon revisiting this compilation, Mitchell does a pretty great job of filtering Al's wandering muse at this point through the trademark sounds of Memphis and Hi Records! plus "Glory Glory", "Let It Shine", "Keep Me Cryin", "Oh Me Oh My", "I Tried To Tell Myself", and "Smile A Little Bit More". Juju Rogers40 Acres N Sum Mula ... LP
Jakarta (Germany), 2019. Sealed ... $19.99
Juju Rogers cut a pretty unique path on his debut album, and this might be even stronger! He has a unique perspective to draw from – born and raised in Germany with an African American GI father and a German mother, his voice and perspective in contemporary hip hop is fresh and distinctive by nature – but the craft is universally relatable. The beats and bass thump, there's nice use of live instrumentation on several tracks, and Juju's charismatic and forthright rhymes and sung vocals are really strong. Includes "89", "Real S**t", "Black Thursday", "Follow Me", "Mula", "10 Yas", "Identity", "God" & "Babalyon". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Seu JorgeCarolina (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 2002. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A HUGE batch of samba-soul grooves from Seu Jorge! Jorge previously knocked around Brazil as a member of the late 90s pop group Farofa Carioca, but his first solo outing is a massive step forward into the upper echelon of the Brazilian scene! Like the best of his contemporaries, Jorge uses the rich history of samba and bossa as a springboard – but it's the pronounced contemporary qualities, such as production and mix work by Beastie Boy producer Mario Caldato – that push Carolina way over the top and make it much more than a genre exercise! The title track echoes the earlier work of Jorge Ben, who actually pens the reggae-inflected tune "Em Nagoya Eu Vi Eriko", and the tracks "Mangueira" and "O Samba Tai" have the classic samba groove and crisp background vocals that would sound right in place on Tom Ze's Se O Caso E Chorar. "Hagua" has a deep reggae thump, and nearly everything here has kind of a 70s soul feel thanks to some bright, almost Kool & The Gang-like horn arrangements! The group includes Azymuth drummer Mamao, Paulinho Black on bass, Banda Black Rio's William Magalhaes on keyboards, and Josimar Monteiro on violin. Another great new solo artist from Brazil, and one that we expect amazing things from in the years to come! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Keith Mansfield/Alan HawkshawKPM 1000 – The Big Beat (180 gram pressing) ... LP
KPM/Tummy Touch (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest sound library records ever made – a whopping batch of funky Hammond heavies from British legends Keith Mansfield and Alan Hawkshaw! The rare set was recorded right at the tail end of the 60s – and it's got a mod sort of style that mixes funky rhythms with some incredibly groovy work on organ – all in service of tight, short tunes originally recorded for use in radio and TV, but which is easily some of the best instrumental work coming out of the UK at the time! Both players are at the top of their game here – Hawkshaw, with plenty of those whomping grooves we love so much in his work with The Mohaws – and Mansfield, with a clean lean line on the keys that's equally great. Titles include "Exclusive Blend", "Teenage Travelogue", "Teenage Ton Up", "The Mexican DJ", and "Red Square Stomp" by Keith Mansfield – and "Studio 69", "Work Out", "Beat Me Til I'm Blue", "Senior Thump", "Tap Footer", "Delivery Date", "Man On The Move", and "Debsville" by Alan Hawkshaw. A&M/PTG (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The early 80s debut from singer, songwriter Gary Taylor – also playing Rhodes, piano and synth on this set – filled with nicely grooving 80s soul! The songs are solid, and though he'd go on to write songs for a number of soul and R&B stars, he lets these numbers build slowly into the hooks and choruses. There's lots of bouncing keys and drum machine thump and washes of synth – and nice, funky bass lines. Includes "Down For The Count",, "Just What I Have In Mind", "On The Line", "This Time", "Looking Back", "Special" and more. This CD edition includes the bonus track "On The Line (Long Version)". CD

✨✧ Terumasa Hino/Masabumi Kikuchi QuintetAcoustic Boogie ... CD
Somethin Else/Blue Note (Japan), 1995. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pair of Japanese jazz giants – sounding really wonderful here in a mid 90s session for the Somethin Else/Blue Note label! The set definitely lives up to its title – as both Hino and Kikuchi had played often in electric modes, but are heard here in a tight quintet that's very back to basics – a solid style that's a mix of hardbop and some modern touches – with all of the vivid colors we've come to expect from both players over the years! Kikuchi's piano is especially nice – very rhythmic and pulsing, without ever trying too hard – and the group also features alto from Greg Osby, bass from James Genus, and drums from Billy Kilson. Titles include "Monk's Dilemma", "Summer Mist", "The Moon Dog", "Sliced Wild Potatoes", and "Thump". CD

Rampart/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1964/1965. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
One of the all-time Chicano Rock classics from LA – a soulful batch of party numbers from legendary east side group Cannibal & The Headhunters! The group scored big with their hit version of "Land Of 1000 Dances" – a thumping, bumping take on the tune that was a runaway single in the 60s – and which set the tone for the rest of their tunes, all done in a brown-eyed soul mode that often offered a new take on better known hits of the 60s! Features 18 tracks in all – the group's complete Rampart recordings, including the full album Land Of 1000 Dances, plus additional singles. Titles include "Land Of 1000 Dances", "Out Of Sight", "My Girl", "Searchin", "Shotgun", "The Fat Man", "Nau Ninny Nau", "I'll Show You How To Love Me", "I Need Your Loving", and "Please Baby Please". ✨✧ CommodoresHot On The Tracks ... LP
Motown, 1976. Very Good- ... $4.99
Early funk from the Commodores – back in the days when Lionel Richie could still get up and groove! We'll be the first to admit that we're sometimes put off by the group, given their later hits, but it's records like this that actually remind us how great they could be – a mixture of funk and sweet soul, done with an incredibly well-crafted approach, and enough of a blend of the two styles to keep things interesting! The album's got a wonderfully tight quality – never slick or too smooth, but just nicely put together – commercial, but not so much so that it loses its soul. Titles include "Quick Draw", "Just To Be Close To You", "High On Sunshine", "Let's Get Started", "Can't Let You Tease Me", "Come Inside", and "Thumpin Music". LP, Vinyl record album

Everlast, Early 60s. Very Good ... $4.99
A thumping bit of funky – two sides from Les Cooper and his Soul Rockers combo, both produced by Bobby Robinson! There's a feel here that's a lot like Bobby's raw R&B instrumental sides of the early 60s – lots of heavy bass, muddy piano, slurry drums – and a honking tenor sax cutting right out front! "Dig Yourself" actually has a bit of a vocal – a nice little hipster, almost beat group kind of approach! 7-inch, Vinyl record

The group's a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! Sleeping Bag/Get On Down, 1981. New Copy 2 CDs ... $9.99 19.99
An incredible album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! – fleshed out and expanded more than ever before by Sleeping Bag and Get On Down Records! The group's core sound is a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! This 2CD box set edition is amazing – coming in a heavy-duty box with each disc in an oversized gatefold style sleeve – and it includes more Arthur Russell collaborative and/or pseudonymous material for Sleeping Bag with or as Bonzo Goes To Washington, Felix, Sounds Of JHS Brooklyn and Indian Ocean. Other tracks include "School Bell/Treehouse" (Indian Ocean), "You Can't Hold Me Down (Extended Version)" (Felix), "5 Minutes (R-r-r Radio Mix)" (Bonzo Goes To Washington) and more. Joe FarrellMoon Germs ... LP
CTI, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... $9.99
One of the best records ever cut by funky sax man Joe Farrell! The album's got a stripped down, choppy groove – virtually the blueprint for later 70s funk of this type, and played perfectly by Farrell and a very hip quartet lineup! Players include Joe on soprano and tenor sax, Herbie Hancock on keyboards, Stanley Clarke on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – playing with a very angular sense of rhythm that really dives the record! The record's got a tight combo sound that's far more energetic than most CTI jazz from the time – and titles include the great cut "Great Gorge", which has a tight modal sample groove, plus "Times Lie", "Bass Folk Song", and "Moon Germs". LP, Vinyl record album
(NOTE – Vinyl has a large press flaw bump near the end of each side that unfortunately skips during "Moon Germs" and thumps during "Bass Folk Song", the rest of the vinyl is great. Cover has some ring and edge wear.)

Foreign ExchangeLeave It All Behind ... LP
HBD, 2008. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.98
The second album from Foreign Exchange – the formerly bi-continental project of North Carolina MC and soul singer Phonte of Little Brother, and transplanted Dutch producer Nicolay – who take an even deeper turn into spacey soul on Leave It All Behind! Given that Phonte is singing rather than rapping, you'd be tempted to say that Foreign Exchange has left hip hop behind, but hip hop is in the heart and soul – and the group was born of the idea of hip hop as an evolving art form – so rhymes or not, it's still hip hop in a way. The spacey, jazzy melodic groove here finds producer Nicolay in peak form – a nice balance between thumping bass, beats and mellow atmospherics, and the mood is impeccable. We're pretty much stunned at how well Phonte is developing as a vocalist, with laidback lead and overdubbed backing vocals that go back the heart & soul comment above. A left turn for a duo that was adventurous to begin, with an excellent move to the next level! Titles include "Daykeeper", "Take Off The Blues", "All Or Nothing/Coming Home For You", "I Wanna Know", "House Of Cards", "Sweeter Than You", "Valediction", "If She Breaks Your Heart", "If This Is Love", "Something To Behold" and "Leave It All Behind". Grupo BatuqueO Tempo Do Samba ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2005. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
Another modern samba gem from the long-running Grupo Batuque – with a different sound than previous work and (we believe) a substantially re-tooled line-up – but don't fret, because this is a wonderful effort! The Brazilian percussion backbone of previous Grupo Batuque work is augmented on this album with a 70s soul jazz vibe fused with modern sounds – plus some of the African and hybridized elements we've come to expect! It has a positively sparking production, courtesy of Roc Hunter, and a clean sound that goes down surprising well with the persistent, thumping percussion, melodic vocals and sporadic modern elements. The crew seems to be spearheaded this time out by multi-instrumentalist Ivan Conti and percussionist/vocalist Cidinho Moreira – with vocals by Fabiola, Claudemir De Silva and others, percussion by Pirulito, cavaquinho by Lincoln De Lima, keys by Nico Resende and Marcos Nimrichter, bass and guitar by Alex Malheiros, horn arrangements by Leo Gandleman, trumpet by Bidinho and more! Another contender from Far Out Records! 18 tracks in all: "Bom Pra Kalimba", Cavasamba Um (edit)", "Nacao Tupi (edit)", "Afro Black", "O Tempo Do Samba Um (edit)", "Batucada Maneira", "Ida E Volta", "Cavasamba Dois (edit)", "Jacone", "Maracutaia", "Saldacao", "Mae Iemenja", "O Tempo" and more. Ndagga (UK), 2013. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A hard-grooving, drum-heavy set from Jeri-Jeri – a project spearheaded by Berlin-based producer Mark Ernestus! 800% Ndagga is an incredible set of Sabar and talking-drum tracks – thunderous, unrelentingly thumped by a griot clan of drummers in Dakar – and taken to an even deeper level thanks to a guest roster of vocalists that include Baaba Maal, Mbene Diatta Seck and more. As a producer, Ernestus has remixed African legends from Tony Allen to Konono No 1, and apparently hooked up with these musicians as the result of record digging quest in Dakar. We're glad he went. It's a great set! The group includes players for Baaba Maal, Youssou N'Dour and other legends – and they include Bakane Seck, Rahim Ngom, Rahim Dgon, Kora Faye, Moustafa Samb and more. Cotillion/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $14.99 20.99
The lasting legacy of Screaming Lord Sutch – and an album that's almost equally well-known for its work by a host of famous guests – including Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and others! Page is perhaps the most involved here – as he produced the set with Sutch, co-wrote some tracks, and plays some mighty searing guitar – as does Beck, which makes the album almost worth it alone for all the wonderful solos! But Sutch himself is pretty great too – kind of a mish-mash of late 60s nasty camp references, with the same sinister vibe as Kim Fowley – and an equally freewheeling approach to a tune that makes the album a heck of a lot of fun. Titles include "Gutty Guitar", "Flashing Lights", "Wailing Sounds", "Thumping Beat", "Union Jack Car", and "London". CD

Some serious slammin from The Pointer Sisters – still going strong here, near the end of an amazing run of records done with producer Richard Perry! The late 80s vibe is definitely in place – as the beats are a lot more upfront than previously for the trio – a bumpin, thumping approach to the groove that really lives up to the title – and which serves to be a perfect way to emphasize the hook-heavy approach to soul that was always the Sisters' strongest suit. Dancer and pop soul sensation Jermaine Stewart's bright, thumping and 80s dancefoor R&B that busted out huge on the pop charts for a moment! Jermaine was a dancer on Soul Train and background singer before busting out with some catchy R&B hits and the massive pop smash "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off". It's a fun record, and it's interesting to listen to the very 80s sound all these later, after its time in the dark outdated pop shadows, before it became a celebrated influence of the hippest post millennium DJs. ✨✧ Brian Eno with Jon Hopkins & Leo AbrahamsSmall Craft On A Milk Sea ... CD
Warp, 2010. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant set of ambient atmosphere and heavier instrumental moodcraft from Brian Eno on Warp Records – excellent new material from a true innovator – with deft accompaniment from Leo Abrahams on some really unique, textural guitar and Jon Hopkins on piano, keys and electronics. As a producer & collaborator to superstars, Eno seems to be called in to provide sweeping, yet atypical walls of sound to more conventional pop/rock songwriting, but his own all too few records are as unencumbered by convention as ever. The sounds range from spare and open, to more of a thumping intensity. Of course production quality is truly impeccable, as you should expect from a sound savant of Eno's caliber. Titles include "Emerald And Lime", "Complex Heaven", "Flint", "Horse", "Bone Jump", "Dust Shuffle", "Written, Forgotten", "Late Anthropocene", "Calcium Needles", "2 Forms Of Anger", "Paleosonic" and more. ✨✧ J Dilla (Jay Dee)Donuts ... CD
Stones Throw, 2005. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The classic batch of instrumentals from J Dilla – one that strongly transcends the hip hop genre – and perhaps his rawest, and most adventurous listening experience ever! The loopy soul samples, rich synth/electro shine, and thumping bass and soul beats that Dilla largely made his name on are laced throughout, but he also takes things a step into stranger territory – with spacey elements that buzz as much as they groove! The cuts are never less than soulful and funky, and never really steps into his peer Madlib's brand of the weeded out style, either. We love how raw this all feels, too! It's easily identifiable as the work of Jay Dee, but at the same time, wholly unpredictable! One of the best releases that Stone's Throw ever released – instrumental or vocal! Includes "Donuts (Intro & Outro)", "Workinonit", "Waves", "Light My Fire", "People", "Mash", "Airworks", "Lightworks", "Stepson Of The Clapper", "One Eleven", "Don't Cry", "Geek Down", "Thunder", "Gobstopper", "Walkinonit", "U-Love", "Last Donut Of The Night" and more. ✨✧ Lord Sutch & Heavy FriendsLord Sutch & Heavy Friends/Hands Of Jack The Ripper ... CD
Cotillion/Wounded Bird, 1970/1971. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two Cotillion classics from Screaming Lord Sutch – back to back on a single CD! First up is Lord Sutch & Heavy Friends – an album that's almost equally well-known for its work by a host of famous guests – including Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and others! Hands Of Jack The Ripper is filled with weird and wild sounds from Screaming Lord Sutch – and a set that has as many "heavy friends" at play as his better-known previous album for Cotillion! As with that set, the vibe here is an odd mix of older beat group styles from mid 60s London, but filtered through a generation that's already bursting out with hard rock, psych, and prog inspiration – which means any nod towards older rock and soul roots come out sounding very offbeat in the end! Players include Ritchie Blackmore on lead guitar, Keith Moon on drums, and Noel Redding on bass – and titles include "Country Club", "Great Balls Of Fire", "Bye Bye Johnny/Johnny B Goode", "Gotta Keep A Rocking", and "Hands Of Jack The Ripper", which is mini-horror movie itself! ✨✧ ParliamentMothership Connection ... LP
Casablanca, 1975. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Here's where it all happens – the huge culmination of all the years of heavy funk and psychedelic soul created by George Clinton and the P-Funk empire – fused into an amazingly tight groove that helped win over much bigger audiences than ever before! The album title and cover are very fitting – as George Clinton launches the mothership, forges his classic space-funk image, and blows the P-Funk empire into an arena-filling mega-star act – all with grooves that are still some of the tightest, sharpest funk you'll ever hear – all these many decades later. The instrumentation is razor-sharp – played by giants like Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Bootsy Collins, and Bernie Worrell – and the lyrics still have all the edginess and naughtiness of the earlier years – tied together wonderfully to make a very unified album, and one that's full of classics too! Titles include "Mothership Connection (Star Child)", "Night Of The Thumpasorus Peoples", "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)", "Handcuffs", "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)", and "Unfunky Ufo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lou RawlsUnmistakably Lou ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1977. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest records ever by Lou Rawls – if only for one cut! That's the amazing "See You When I Get There", which starts with a Fender Rhodes riff over a hard thumping beat – while Lou does this little monologue about calling his woman at home. Then strings sweep in, the groove gets harder, and Lou sings a great song about the pride of being a middle class guy with a great home to come home to! Many other tracks are a bit more mellow – and titles include "It's Our Anniversary Today", "Some Folks Never Learn", and the wonderful two-stepper "Some Day You'll Be Old". LP, Vinyl record album

Doobie-doo doobie-doo! One of the catchiest Roy Ayers dancefloor tracks ever – a bassy bumping thumper that wonderfully skirts the line between clubby and funky! The track's got female vocals singing along with the hook – all in a mode that's quite similar to the most uptempo work by Ramp – and the tune may well be best known for it's famous sample use by Tribe Called Quest on their classic "Description Of A Fool"! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Billy EckstineNo Cover No Minimum (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Roulette, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really great album by Billy Eckstine – much more swinging and upbeat than some of his other 50s sessions, and with a strongly pronounced jazz flair overall! The album's supposedly recorded live in Vegas in the wee hours of the morning, and features Billy blowing a bit of trumpet as well as singing – all set to some nicely thumping orchestrations by Bobby Tucker, who really knows how to hit the right groove for this sort of a set. Titles include "Lady Luck", "Have A Song On Me", "Deed I Do", "Without A Song", "Moonlight In Vermont", and "Lush Life". CD features a huge amount of previously unissued bonus tracks – titles that include "Prelude To A Kiss", "Fools Rush In", "I Apologize", "Little Mama", "Prisoner Of Love", "Alright Okay You Win", and "In The Still Of The Night". ✨✧ Les NubiansOne Step Forward ... CD
Omtown/Virgin, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
The French-Afro funky pop sisters return – with a shiny, clubby groove on some tunes, and a deeply percussive, sweetly-orchestrated live instrumental style on others! Celia and Helene Faussart have some of the most heavenly vocals in the game right now – gently gliding back and forth between French and English – whichever fits the groove better. They know how to float over a groove in the way some of our current favorite female Brazilian vocalists do right now, and have a deep feel for the club style, as well as the more earthy Afro styles. IG Culture handles a healthy chunk of the production – with the slick, crisp and bouncy kinda vibe that you'd find on that group's recordings. Mounir Belkhir and the group handled the bigger band production – with a lot of gentle work on the keys, thumping bass, and lilting guitar appregios sifted through the crisp percussion. Nice!!! Tracks include "Nu-Hymn", "Temperature Rising" featuring Kweli, "J'Veux D' La Musique", "La Guerre", "One Step Forward", "Brothers & Sisters", "Immortel Cheikh Anta Diop" featuring the great Manu Dibango on marimba, and more. 15 tracks in all. ✨✧ Candice Monique & The OpticsIn My Soul ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
A mix of funky storytelling and sharp modern soul from Candice Monique – a singer and poet – backed well by The Optics! The title track kinds things off with a mix of stripped down, but cleanly thumping funky soul and Candice in closer to a spoken word funk chanteuse mode, but she follows it up with some very sweetly sung numbers. They cover a lot of stylistic territory here, and they do it well! Titles include "In My Soul", "For All Time", "Mama Don't Know", "Feel The Vibe", "Soul Dance", "My Child", "Shave My Head", Crazy Crazy Thing", "Wish I Was A Bass" and more. CD

An early classic from the Chicago scene – spare, moody, and not nearly as house-thumping as you might think. Jamie's vocals are very light and almost muted, and the tune kind of sparkles with a dark European-influenced sound. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Groovy folk funk from mid 70s Korea – mad, pulpy tunes from Kim Jung Mi – possibly her best work ever! This wonderful self-titled set is a pretty deep left turn from her other material that we've been lucky enough to get our hands on – this one really goes deeper into the trippier elements that pepper her work – with deep, thumping bass lines, groovy organ washes and some strings! Groovy, groovy work and more than lives up to the World Psychedelia tag! 11 tracks in all. (Apologies for our lack of song titles – all notes are Korean!) CD
