Throbbing Gristle20 Jazz Funk Greats ... CD
Mute, 1979. Used ... $6.99
The title might seem like a joke – given Throbbing Gristle's reputation for intense noise and dark sounds – but at another level, it's actually a great fit for the spirit of the record too! The sound here is a lot leaner than before – almost as if TG is focusing in on the best elements that made their earlier performances so great – exposing a hidden talent for a song, a groove, and even an occasional melody – in ways that almost refine and filter down the whole of German 70s electronics into a spirit of post-punk expression! Subject matter is still pretty darn dark, and vocals are as creepy as ever – thanks Genesis P – but there's also more of the electronics that Chris & Cosey would soon explore on their own. Titles include "20 Jazz Funk Greats", "Beachy Head", "Still Walking", "Tanith", "Convincing People", "Exotica", "Hot On The Hells Of Love", "Persuasion", "Walkabout", "What A Day", and "Six Six Sixties". Throbbing GristleHeathen Earth – The Live Sound Of Throbbing Gristle ... LP
Industrial (UK), 1980. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
A "live in studio" set from Throbbing Gristle – one that seeks to be a refinement of their famous style of concert performance – set up during better recording conditions, which really shows in the music produced! There's a very dark edge to the whole thing here – the noise and fuzz of the early years, mixed with some of the leaner electronics of the previous record – all filtered together wonderfully in some post-production modes, which really brings out the instrumentation beautifully! It's clear that at this point, TG are no sonic accident – that they've realized a power that few others could touch – and which would have been almost earth-moving, had they managed to hold the group together well into the 80s. Yet despite the imminent breakup, Heathen Earth stands as one of the most striking albums ever from the quartet – true genius forged out of analogue electronics, guitars, cornet, processed vocals, and other weird sounds! Chris CarterArchival 1973 to 1977 (blue vinyl pressing – with download) ... LP
Mute, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $20.99 22.98
Early and amazing sounds from electronic genius Chris Carter – material recorded in his home studio during the mid 70s – with a style that clearly lays the blueprint for his collaborations to Throbbing Gristle! Yet without any vocals or other noise, you can really hear the Carter component of the music in a wonderful way – different even than his later collaborations with Cosi Fanni Tutti, even when spare – as the whole vibe here is maybe a more condensed version of Krautrock electronics, taken into the space of songs that are just a few minutes long – but which also have a lot more darkness than other electronic work of the time. That sense of darkness is key – as these tracks are subtle, but very different than spacier or more calming music of the type – proof that Carter was really an emotional pioneer when it came to this side of the spectrum. Titles include "Warm Hair", "Nodes", "Head Less", "Jet Age", "Hexfoil", "Black Powder", "Ghost Trains", and "See Sick". LP, Vinyl record album

Chris CarterMondo Beat (clear vinyl pressing – with download) ... LP
Conspiracy International/Mute, 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 22.98
Seminal solo sounds from Chris Carter – best known for his work with Cosey Fanni Tutti, and as a core member of Throbbing Gristle – out here in slightly different territory on his own! Chris follows the spare electronics of his work with Cosey – and some of the tracks definitely have the "beat" promised in the title – but at a level that's nicely subtle, and never sacrifices the overall sonic complexity for the sake of a groove! The record's a very early variant of modes that would later be handled less-skillfully by the end of the decade by so many others – and sounds much better here in the hands of one of the originators – on titles that include "Mondo B", "Moonlight", "Real Life", "Noevil", "Nobadhairdo", and "Beyond Temptation". And be warned – the cover says "this record contains subliminals"! LP, Vinyl record album

Chris & CoseyHeartbeat ... LP
Rough Trade/Conspiracy International (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99
The amazing first album from Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti – done after the breakup of Throbbing Gristle, and in a way that really sets the duo apart from the rest of the group! The music is dark, but also very tuneful – analogue electronics used much more clearly than on most TG material – with voices that are processed in ways that work perfectly next to the Casio keyboards and guitars. The whole thing's great – so different than all the others who tried to imitate this mode – and way more than just another cold wave footnote too. Titles include "Put Yourself In Los Angeles", "This Is Me", "Voodoo", "Moorby", "Radio Void", "Just Like You", "Bust Stop", "Heartbeat", and "Manic Melody". LP, Vinyl record album

Chris & CoseyTrance ... LP
Conspiracy International (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99
After terrifying the underground as part of Throbbing Gristle in the 70s, Chris and Cosey look almost cute on the cover of this classic early album – yet still manage to retain all of the darkness that continues to make the music hold up so well over the years! The elements here are familiar – beats, keyboards, guitars, and processing – of the sort used by so many of their contemporaries, but rarely in ways that move us so much as the duo of Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti – maybe because of all the experience they had going to the farther reaches in TG, which makes the results a lot more powerful when they're in more tuneful territory here. Titles include "Cowboys In Cuba", "Lost", "The Giants Feet", "Impulse", "Re-Education Through Labor", "Secret", "Until", and "The Gates Of Ancient Cities". LP, Vinyl record album

Kevin HarrisonInscrutably Obvious ... LP
Cherry Red/Superior Viaduct, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.98
Spare analogue tracks from Kevin Harrison – work that's relatively early in the cassette culture world of electronics, and which makes for a nice link between more widely-circulated singles of the time! Some of the tunes have a nicely rhythmic pulse, peppered with noise – almost like late Throbbing Gristle, or solo Chris & Cosey – while others maybe recall more of the tuneful territory of Young Marble Giants, but with a more obscure sort of charm, and a more abstract approach overall! The collection is a great reminder that we still have so much to discover from this period – so much music that was created almost in secret, at a time when the bigger groups were getting all the glory. Titles include "All Night Long", "Chase The Dragon", "Cantonese Detective Agency", "Cyclotron", "Water", "Flicker", "Melodica Melodica", "People In Space", and "Free Float". LP, Vinyl record album

Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Noise galore from the British scene of the punk and post-punk years – a fantastic exploration of the deeper sonic riches of the world of records at the time – and one that effortlessly moves between art, academic, and more popular-based recordings! You'll recognize some of these artists from later, straighter work – or from earlier, more progressive sides – and together with the rest, the package presents a beautifully bleak British musical landscape – sounds that maybe provide the breeding ground for the later industrial scene, but without any of its cliches – or which maybe help the earlier art rock generation to find a bit more edge and relevance in the punk generation! As always with Cherry Red, the notes and package are as great as the music – and the set features dozens of tracks by artists who include Robert Wyatt, Test Dept, Robert Rental, Alterations, Art Bears, A Tent, Gavin Bryars, Hula, Nocturnal Emissions, Robert Fripp, Faction, Zos Kia, Eyeless In Gaza, David Cunningham, Clock DVA, Will Sergeant, Swell Maps, Soft Machine, Pop Group, This Heat, Blancmange, Throbbing Gristle, and many more! VariousProphecy + Progress – UK Electronics 1978 to 1990 ... LP
Peripheral Minimal (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy ... $22.99
The farther reaches of the UK electronic scene in the post-punk years and beyond – material that might be best termed as the earliest years of industrial music – not the thinner "industrial dance" of the latter part of the 80s, but the moody, noisy sounds that grew out of the Throbbing Gristle generation, and the early modes of the Sheffield scene! These tracks are all relatively spare and stark – fitting the image on the cover – and many are even colder than cold wave material – especially those that are instrumental, with lots of analogue electronics in the mix. Titles include "Vision Speed" by Konstruktivists, "Idol" by Vice Versa, "Lomticks Of Time", "Beast Of Burden" by Attrition, "Automation" by Five Times Of Dust, "Total Shutdown" by John Costello, "Too Hot" by Peter Hope & David Harrow, and "Conversation With" by V Sor X. Rawkus, 1999. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
CD version of two LPs worth of instrumental tracks from Company Flow, produced by Mr Len and El Producto, features less of the distorted crashing beats style of some of their early material, and more of the atmospheric-hypnotic style. We're not quite sure what to think, but in some ways these tracks wouldn't sound out of place on certain early Throbbing Gristle or Current 93 records (Not bad company to be in – ?). Tracks include "Suzy Pulled A Pistol On Henry", "Friend Vs Friend", "Linoleum", "Bee Aware", "Workers Needed", "No Lock", "Shadows Drown", "Worker Ant Uprise", "Indelible Hybrid", "World Of Garbage", "Black Out", and more. 16 tracks. ✨✧ Yan TreggerTo The Land Of No Return (with bonus track) ... LP
Magic Touch/Wah Wah (Spain), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Yan Tregger gave the world some funky sound library work in the 70s – but here, he's in much darker territory – definitely in the land of no return, which he explores with waves of really moody electronics! The tunes are still rhythmic – as with Yan's previous work – but also have all these dark corners, spooky echoes, and fuzzy electronics all around the edges – maybe in a way that's similar to the Jazz Funk Greats sound of Throbbing Gristle, but with no vocals at all – and more focused too. Titles include "Hooter", "Shelters", "Insects World", "Caught", "Starting Tone", "Departure", "Nature Death", and "Metal Kit". Reissue features the unreleased bonus track "Space Flower".
