Fred Anderson & Hamid DrakeFrom The River To The Ocean ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2007. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99 30.99
A sublime session that's co-led by two of the greatest figures on the Chicago jazz scene at the time of the recording – drummer Hamid Drake and tenorist Fred Anderson – both musicians that had been working in the city for years, but who really seemed to blossom in the new light that the 21st Century was bringing to their music! The tracks here are long and beautiful – maybe more spiritual than most anything else that Anderson ever recorded – still with enough edges to please his fans of freer improvisation, but building with more rhythmic currents and modal energy – thanks in part to contributions on the record from the great Jeff Parker on guitar, and bassist Joshua Abrams – a player who's really starting to find his way on a record like this! Harrison Bankhead plays piano – but throughout, it's the work of Anderson and Drake that really shines in the spotlight, as it should – on long titles that include "Planet E", "Strut Time", "For Brother Thompson", "From The River To The Ocean", and "Sakti/Shiva". CalifoneRoots And Crowns (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2006. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
Rootsy noise sweetened by raggedly alluring melodicism from Califone – still one of the most vital and idiosyncratic groups of their time! We can no long heap the experimentalist tag on Califone – if we ever really could. They've got quite a sonic blueprint laid down after 8 or so albums, but they do continue to surprise us. Roots And Crowns is a strange and compelling blend of crackling, somehow rural sounds & percussion, strummed and sometimes chugging guitars, pastoral found-sound atmosphere and singing that's no more or less part of the ether than any other element. A timeless piece of work! Tracks include "Pink & Sour", "Spider's House" (which references Brian Wilson at his furthest out stage), "The Eye You Lost In The Crusades" (which references Nick Drake a bit in the guitar), "A Chinese Actor", "Our Kitten Sees Ghosts", "The Orchids", "Black Metal Valentine", "Rose Petal Ear", "3legged Animals", "If You Would" and more. Isotope 217Unstable Molecule (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 1999. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
A fantastic side project from the Tortoise side of the spectrum on the Chicago side of the scene – a set that features players from that group mixing with others, and working in these long tracks that really explore a love of jamming and electric jazz! There's definitely an influence here from 70s Miles and Herbie – but the sounds are more laidback, and very much in the spirit of a group from the genre-busting scene at that point in Chicago history – with percussion and drums from John McIntire and Dan Bitney, guitar from Jeff Parker, cornet from Rob Mazurek, bass from Matt Lux, and trombone from Sara P Smith – all of whom make the record feel like Tortoise meets Chicago Underground Duo, with a plus one in the mix! Titles include "Kryptonite Smokes The Red Line", "Prince Naymor", "Audio Boxing", "Beneath The Undertow", and "La Jetee". LP, Vinyl record album

Sam PrekopComma (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2020. New Copy ... $25.99 26.99
A compelling step forward for Sam Prekop – a key member of Sea & Cake for many years, but maybe an even more engaging artist on his own! This set's different than some of Sam's previous records – in that it's all electric, really electronic – with modes that hearken back to early ambient experiments, and some of the Japanese work of the 80s – but which also ties things in more strongly to the crucial contemporary vibe of his scene! These aren't retro electronic modes – as some are freewheeling in rhythm, almost evoking the early Thrill Jockey records of Oval – while others are tuneful and more direct, but still with edges around the sides – a subtle rasp that makes it clear that the record is as much a project of Prekop the visual artist as it is the musician. Titles include "Comma", "September Remember", "Never Met", "Above Our Heads", "Circle Line", "Summer Places", "The New Last", and "Park Line". LP, Vinyl record album

TortoiseRhythms Resolutions & Clusters ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 1995. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 24.99
A legendary project from Tortoise – kind of the "part 1.5" to their tremendous debut – as it features material from that record, remixed by members of the group and other key figures on the Chicago scene – all as a real testament to the many criss-crossing styles and modes that were taking place during these key post-rock years! The original material was performed by the version of the group that featured Bundy K Brown, John Herndon, John McIntire, Doug McCombs, and Dan Bitney – and remixes are by McEntire and Brown from the group – plus Steve Albini, Brad Wood, Casey Rice, Jim O'Rourke, Rick Brown, and even Mike Watt! Titles include "Alcohall", "Your New Rod", "Cobwebbed", "Tin Cans (Puerto Rican mix)", "Initial Gesture Protraction", "The Match Incident", and "Not Quite East Of The Ryan". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ed Wilkerson/Nicole Mitchell/Harrison BankheadFrequency ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The creative spirit of the AACM is alive and well in Chicago – as you'll hear in this new project that unites old and young generations in jazz! The group is a reed-heavy quartet with Ed Wilkerson (of 8 Bold Souls fame) and Nicole Mitchell on a variety of flutes and saxes – joined by bassist Harrison Bankhead and percussionist Avreeayl Ra, who both also play some flute as well! And in keeping with traditions first begun by the AACM back in the 60s, the players shift easily through a range of different instruments on the record – sometimes stepping out boldly with fierce and sharp-edged solos, at other times moving more tentatively as they find a creative space around each other. The record's got a surprisingly great sound, especially given that it's coming from the mostly-rock Thrill Jockey label – and the whole thing's a near-classic effort that re-ignites the sounds first started on the classic Chicago avant sessions by Delmark in the 60s! Titles include "Pitiful James", "Take Refuge", "Satya", "Portrait Of Light", "Optimystic", "Serenity", and "Fertility Dance". CD

✨✧ DirectionsDirections In Music ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 1996. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the best records of the post-post rock 90s – the masterful Directions In Music from Bundy K Brown, Doug Sharin and James Warden – a record that will sound fresh and insistent for as long as anyone's listening to it, standing up to the passing of time as well as any other instrumental avant rock album of the 90s, or earlier! 8 untitled pieces with guitar, bass and drums at the core of the sound, but with subtle, angular touches and textural manipulation adding depth without it ever getting too arty or difficult just for the sake of it – there's not a unnecessary particle or element to be found – and it's mesmerizing all the way. ✨✧ Sam PrekopWho's Your New Professor ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Another fine outing from Sam Prekop – his second solo album in five years – and well worth the wait! We hardly need to describe the vibe after all these years of swimming the Sea & Cake. Prekop's vocals are as breathy and breezy as ever, and he still pulls it all off in a way that manages to feel warm and austere at the same time. The arrangements are one step jazzier than that last album's – with plenty of room for his great group find a playful groove. Tracks include "Something", "Magic Step", "Dot Eye", "Two Dedications", "Chicago People", "Little Bridges", "A Splendid Hollow", "C+F", "Neighbor To Neighbor", "Density", and "Between Outside". CD

✨✧ Sam Prekop & John McEntireSons Of ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
You might know these guys in a number of other forms – Sam's the long-running vocalist in Sea & Cake, McEntire is from Tortoise and countless production efforts – but here, the old friends collaborate on new territory that's really wonderful – a set of electronic instrumental tunes that unfold with a great sense of beauty! We're tempted to read the title as a reference to Eno and Bowie working together in Berlin – and while that might be a bit of a stretch, there's definitely the energy of two respectful partners exploring new musical territory here – stepping out on beautiful new sounds that we hope are the start of a new chapter in their careers! Titles include "Ghost At Noon", "Yellow Robe", "Ascending By Night", and "Crossing At The Shallow". CD

✨✧ Jeff ParkerRelatives ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2005. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A seminal record in the growth of Jeff Parker as a musician – a set done when Parker was a key member of Tortoise, and issued on the same label as that group – but a record that really shows the richness of Jeff's guitar talents that would explode in years to come! The set is definitely a jazz record, and maybe does hold some slight sonic semblance to some of Parker's other projects of the period – and the whole thing is a wonderful showcase for his creative phrasing on guitar, and a sense of tone and timing learned in his other collaborations, brought back to jazz in a really great way! The set features sublime drums from Chad Taylor, plus Sam Barshehet on Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric, and Chris Lopes on bass, guitars, and flute as well – on titles that include a sublime remake of Marvin Gaye's "When Did You Stop Loving Me When Did I Stop Loving You", which the group turns into more of an after hours sweet spot than a mournful soul lament – plus "Istanbul", "Mannerisms", "Sea Change", "Beanstalk", "Toyboat" and "Rang (For Michael Zerang)".
