Marisa AndersonCloud Corner ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2018. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
Completely captivating work from Marisa Anderson – an instrumentalist who could easily match the groundbreaking sound of Takoma Records in the 60s with her work on albums like this! Marisa's a guitarist at heart – and mostly plays electric and acoustic on the record, using the instrument in this spare, open sort of way – far from American roots, but also very American at the same time – informed by all the modern changes on the instrument in the hands of the acoustic underground in recent decades, but delivered with a very down-to-earth approach that's extremely beautiful. Anderson plays a few other instruments over the course of the record – including a bit of Wurlitzer electric piano – bu the guitar dominates, in a wonderful way – on titles that include "Lift", "Sanctuary", "Surfacing", "Cloud Corner", "Sun Song", "Lament", "Slow Ascent", and "Pulse". Sequoyah MurrayPenalties Of Love EP ... 12-inch
Thrill Jockey, 2019. New Copy (pic cover)... $5.99
A really amazing debut from Sequoyah Murray – a young soul singer we have a feeling we'll be hearing plenty from in years to come! Sequoyah's got a style that's very much his own – one born out of frequent collaboration and improvisation – with elements that are maybe as jazz-based at times as soul – often set to spare instrumentation with percussion, keyboards, and other subtle sonic elements – frequently very much in the low range of the sonic spectrum, but not in a way that leans heavily on basslines or beats. Instead, there's all these moody sub-spectrum elements that shimmer beneath the vocals – and which create a platform that makes the whole thing unlike anything else we've ever heard. Titles include "True Fun", "Second Born", "Haven", and "Penalties Of Love". 12-inch, Vinyl record

Sam PrekopComma ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A compelling step forward for Sam Prekop – a key member of Sea & Cake for many years, but maybe an even more engaging artist on his own! This set's different than some of Sam's previous records – in that it's all electric, really electronic – with modes that hearken back to early ambient experiments, and some of the Japanese work of the 80s – but which also ties things in more strongly to the crucial contemporary vibe of his scene! These aren't retro electronic modes – as some are freewheeling in rhythm, almost evoking the early Thrill Jockey records of Oval – while others are tuneful and more direct, but still with edges around the sides – a subtle rasp that makes it clear that the record is as much a project of Prekop the visual artist as it is the musician. Titles include "Comma", "September Remember", "Never Met", "Above Our Heads", "Circle Line", "Summer Places", "The New Last", and "Park Line". CD

Charles Rumback & Ryley WalkerLittle Common Twist ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A wonderful instrumental duo effort from drummer Charles Rumback and guitarist Ryley Walker – the former a vital player in the Chicago jazz and experimental scene, the latter one one time Chicago, now NYC based player who has been as important as anyone taking the folk and blues-steeped avant garde acoustic guitar influences of Jansch, Fahey and others into new realms. Where their previous work together and some more angular edges, this one his a more hypnotic sound overall, with loose folk passages that flow into surprisingly futuristic sounds, with producer John Hughes on synth and electronics. Thrill Jockey continues to be an welcoming home to progressive instrumental music. Includes "Half Joking", "Self Blind Sun", "Idiot Parade", "And You, These Sang", "Menebhi", "Ill-Fitting/No Sickness", "If You're Around And Down" and "Worn And Held". CD

TortoiseCatastrophist (with download) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2016. New Copy ... $16.99 18.98
The first album in years from Tortoise – again stretching out creatively in fascinating ways, some subtle and others obvious – and all of it compelling! The Catastrophist is partly inspired by work Tortoise was commissioned to produce by the City Of Chicago, material that could be used in collaboration with the city's great jazz and improvistional musical community. For The Castastrophist record, these musical building blocks were pulled back into Tortoise-ville, where the band could do their distinctive thing. Compelling drums and percussion, creative guitar and bass grooves, and divergent keyboard textures make up the connective tissue – but it's a pretty diverse sound overall! Two of the more fascinating stylistic departures have vocals – a bass-y, synth-steeped cover of the early 70s David Essex hit "Rock On", and the moody, melodic "Yonder Blue" with Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo. Other titles include"The Catastrophist', "Ox Duke","Gopher Island", "Shake Hands With Danger", "The Clearing Fills", "Gesceap", "Tesseract", "Hot Coffee" and "At Odds With Logic". ✨✧ TortoiseIt's All Around You (with download) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2004. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Wow, this is SO not the Tortoise that first set the underground aflame in the early 90s – the group has evolved and opened up in ways we never would have expected. With It's All Around You it's emerged with an airy, open, stargazing set of tracks that resemble the languid atmosphere of Tangerine Dream as much as they do early post rock! Gone, for the most part from early Tortoise is that strong, rubbery electric bass groove and tightly thudding live drum sound. It's All Around You retains the bright vibes and sputtering electronics of the TNT album, and the out front, almost rock & roll guitar lines of the Standards album – and adds an ever present, ambient synthesizer bubble of sound to surround the thing. It's all so catchy, too, and almost sunny. If Tortoise hasn't really broken any new ground this time, it's only because they're the ones who broke it in the first place. Tracks include "It's All Around You", The Lithium Shifts", "Crest", "Stretch", "Dot/Eyes", "By Dawn", "Five Too Many" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ TortoiseMillions Now Living Will Never Die (limited edition color vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 1996. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Essential early-ish Tortoise – and among their best records ever! The bassy, heavily rhythmic aspect of their earlier recordings is as well intact and distinctive as it was on the benchmark self-titled album and earlier singles, but the group really branches out here and incorporates many more diverse elements. The 20+ minute opener "Djed" is as incredible as ever, starting with that brilliant bass line and some staticy effects, which is compelling enough, but soon the drums and organ kick in and it becomes what might be post rock's most epic instrumental anthem. The shorter tracks are hardly less vital. "A Survey", "The Taut And Tame", "Dear Grandma And Grandpa", "Glass Museum" and "Along The Banks Of Rivers". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sorry BambaSorry Bamba Vol 1 – 1970 to 1979 ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 1970s. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful testament to the legacy of Malian singer, flute player and group leader Sorry Bamba – documenting his years leading the Kanaga Orchestra Of Mopti throughout the 1970s – and a great, vital release on Thrill Jockey! The region's musical heritage is intergral to Sorry Bamba's music, but it's also relevant and contemporary to its period and ours – with guitar, bass, organ and horns along with more earthy percussion. His style of songs is pretty amazing, too – and often done with a sense of humor that could be easy to overlook to outsiders – but there's no overlooking how great the music is. Beautifully done by Thrill Jockey, compilers Alex Minoff & Ian Eagleson – with input and insight from Sorry Bamba himself. Includes "Yayoroba", "Boro", "Gambari", "Astan Kelly", "Sekou Amadou", "Sayouwe", "Porry", "Aisse", "Bayadjourou" and "Sare Mabo". CD

✨✧ Sarah LouiseNighttime Birds And Morning Stars (pink vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The biggest creative stride yet for guitar experimentalist Sarah Louise! Sarah continues to use folk traditions – from acoustic guitar, to Appalachian songcraft, to field recordings of nature and more – as a springboard for inventive composition, but this might be the most distinctive and most abstractly inspired work we've heard from her to date. Rooted in 6 string guitar in standard tuning, but fleshed out tremendously with field recordings, bits of synth and really beautiful (and mostly wordless) vocals. Includes "Daybreak", "R Mountain", "Ancient Intelligence", "Rime", "Swarming At The Threshold", "Late Night Healing Choir", "Chitlin Flight" and "Nighttime Birds And Morning Stars". Thrill Jockey, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Sea And Cake as fresh and breezy as ever! It's almost hard to believe, but Any Day marks the 25th years of The Sea And Cake – intermittently throughout that time span, anyway – and one of the most consistently brilliant runs in indie rock. They've always had an easygoing melodic sound, but never to sugary in the melodies and with slowburn appeal that makes their records forever listenable. Their sound is so distinctive, it's always good to have them back! Includes "Cover The Mountain", "I Shouldn't Care", the jazzy Brazilian pop-inspired title track, "Occurs", "Starling", "Paper Window", "Into Rain", "Circle", "These Failing Arms" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Clear vinyl pressing limited to indie stores. Includes download.)
