CymandeSecond Time Round (180 gram pressing) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99
Heavy bass, tight percussion, and a wonderfully trippy groove – the stunning second album from Cymande, and one of our funk favorites from the 70s! These guys have a sound that's completely unique – a vibe that mixes African and Jamaican influences up in the heady London scene of the early 70s – with results that were years ahead of their time, and which still go onto blow many minds all these years later! The bass alone is worth the price of admission – as dubby as anything from Kingston, but with a tighter focus – one that drives some sinister lines from the vocals, and which gets strong support from lots of lively conga passages. There's a slight stoner undercurrent, but the sound of the set is never sleepy at all – and titles include the classic "Anthracite", "Fug", and "Them & Us" – plus "Genevive", "Willie's Headache", "For Baby Ooh", "Bird", and "Crawshay". Baby HueyBaby Huey Story – The Living Legend (2LP 180 gram vinyl pressing with bonus tracks & turntable mat) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Curtom/Rhino/Run Out Groove, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $36.99
Fantastic! The lost link in the Chicago soul scene of the 60s was Baby Huey – and he was a pretty darn big link too, if you've ever seen him in pictures! Weighing in at about 300 pounds, Baby Huey was sort of a rockin' soul star who played clubs on both sides of the city, to audiences of all types – working in a party-styled blend of funk, rock, and soul that was one of the most powerful grooves going down in the Windy City at the time! Huey sadly passed away at a very young age, leaving only this full album as his legacy – a great batch of hard-hitting soul tracks that are among some of the funkiest work ever recorded for the legendary Curtom label! The set includes Huey's classic version of "Mighty, Mighty", a club favorite from the live shows – plus the excellent Curtis Mayfield tune "Hard Times", famous as an oft-used sample track! Other titles include "A Change Is Going To Come", "California Dreamin", "Running", and "Mama Get Yourself Together". A very cool version of this classic – pressed up as a heavy 2LP set – which includes a second full LP of instrumental bonus tracks, and a Run Out Groove turntable mat! Instrumentals include "Running", "Little Linda Turn On", "Mama Get Yourself Together", "Aquarius", "Turn On To Me", "Hard Times", and "You Make Me So Very Happy". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram pressing cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie rundman Mastering – with bonus turntable mat. Sold out via the distributor – get while it's still gettable!)

Duck BakerLes Blues Du Richmond – Demos & Outtakes 1973 to 1979 (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Tompkins Square, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $18.99
A brilliant slice of early work from guitarist Duck Baker – an artist who's blossomed strongly in the jazz world in recent decades, but who here is maybe closer to the roots of earlier music – and works with this fantastic interweaving of blues, folk, swing, and early jazz modes! The style's very fitting for the overdue-issue of these early tapes on Tompkins Square – and might have even gotten Duck Baker a record on Takoma back in the 70s – and it's no surprise that the second half of the material was recorded by Stefan Grossman in the late 70s, as it shares some resonance with his own work of the time. The first 6 tracks are from demo recordings that Baker made in Richmond, the remaining are handled by Grossman – and apart from guest violin and bass on one track, all others are guitar instrumentals by Duck – and include "Homage To Leadbelly", "Doing the Raccoon", "Allah, Perhaps" "Wolverine Blues", "Les Blues De Richmond", "Fire Down There", "That Rhythm Man", "Little Boy", "The Humors of Whisky", "Sandy River Belle", and "Swedish Jig". It's lovely stuff, an honest and emotional take on Mozart played on piano, rather than a spacey synth adaptation and pieces include "Allegro Moderato", "Andante Cantabile", "Allegretto","Rondo F-Dur KV 494", "Adagio H-Moll KV 540", "Allegro" and "Adagio". Lyrics BornLater That Day (15th Anniversary green vinyl pressing with download) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Quannum/Real People, 2003. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $30.99
Lyrics Born of Latyrx fame drops a burning full length solo joint – and if we didn't recognize it as in instant classic on the early 00s it's earned that designation over time! This is pretty much entirely produced, arranged, programmed and written by LB, so if you know the style, you know you can expect a lot of funky live instrumentation, syrupy summer nightlife drums topped off with soulful hooks – but upon revisiting this, where stunned at it how relevant the lyricism as after all these years. LB's rhymes bounce playfully over his west coast funk, sometimes hilarious, somewhat bragging, definitely harmonious and most definitely real wordplay. Check the smooth reggae duet "Love Me So Bad" with Joyo Velarde, the lowrider bass in "Bad Dreams", or the righteousness of "Last Trumpet". There's other guest spots by Cut Chemist, Gift Of Gab, Lateef and the Whitefield Brothers. Plus "Rise And Shine", "Stop Complaining", "Pack Up", "U Ass Bank", "One Session" and more! Marvin Pontiac (John Lurie)Legendary Marvin Pontiac – Greatest Hits (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Northern Spy, 1999. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Not a bad little side project from actor/musician John Lurie – who's working here under the guise of a mysterious blues musician! That gimmick is maybe the worst part of the record – as the music is clearly new, and hardly classic blues at all – but if you can get past it, the record's actually got a heck of a lot of charm in a Tom Waits sort of way – and makes us wish that Lurie had done even more material like this, maybe even under his own name – which would only push his strong personal even further into the music. The album features work from Evan Lurie, Marc Ribot, and John Medeski – and titles include "Wanna Wanna", "I'm A Doggy", "Small Car", "Runnin Round", and "Arms & Legs". LP, Vinyl record album

Sun RaAstro Black (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Impulse/Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy ... $15.99
One of the darkest Sun Ra albums of the early 70s – and a set that's also a bit unusual in his catalog as well! The album was issued during Ra's run with Impulse Records – a period that mostly saw the label reissue previous records from the Saturn catalog – save for a rare few like this one, which was an unusual all-new batch of material for Impulse! Because of that, it's been a bit overlooked in later years – maybe missed as less authentic, but actually some of the most striking sounds that Ra created at the time! There's a very strong tension here between electric and acoustic elements – not in the usual fusion-based way, but instead with this vibe that often has the electric instruments providing darker areas of sound, while the woodwinds and percussion have a way of humanizing the proceedings. June Tyson's also at her moodiest on the title track, "Astro Black" – and other titles include "Hidden Spheres", "Discipline 99", and the long improvisation "Cosmo Fire". CD

Sun RaCymbals/Symbols Sessions – New York City 1973 (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy 2CD ... $25.99
A lost slice of work from Sun Ra's early 70s years on Impulse Records – one of the few new recordings created for his association with that label (most of the titles were reissues of earlier Saturn albums) – but one that was never issued at the time! Cymbals saw some release later, during the 90s – but this package really expands on that album by adding in a whole extra set of recordings from what appear to be the same sessions – and which really flesh out the vibe of the performance! The core group is a sextet – with Ra at the helm on some of his cool electric keyboards – including minimoog, rocksichord, and Gibson Kalamazoo – with acoustic work from Eloe Omoe on bass clarinet, Tal Ebah on trumpet, Ronny Boykins on bass, Harry Ar on drums, and Derek Morris on congas. Much of the core music explores a tension between Ra's cosmic keys and the more earthy sound of the acoustic instruments – but the added material here opens up some nicely different moods, and makes the whole thing explode with deep colors. Titles on Cymbals include "Land Of The Day Star", "Thoughts Under A Dark Blue Light", "The Mystery Of Two", and "The World Of The Invisible" – and added tracks include "Space Landing", "Of Drastic Measures", "Of Otherness", "The Universe Is Calling", and "Destination Of The Known Universe". Rob Base & DJ E-Z RockIt Takes Two (colored vinyl) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Profile, 1988. New Copy ... $20.99
This might not be the most important or vital album in the history of hip hop – but it's got some indistibutable, unstoppable party jams all the same! "It Takes Two" will always be guaranteed to rock any party – and if Rob Base on the mic isn't anything to write home about, at the time Profile dropped this album, even the Jimmy Castor, ESG and James Brown samples weren't totally played out – and still sound great today. Given the sort of tracks that pollute the radio airwaves under the guise of hip hop these days, this is a respectable, if commercial rap album. 10 tracks in all, also includes the hit "Joy & Pain", plus "Make It Hot", "Check This Out" and "Get On The Dance Floor". Betty Wright & The RootsBetty Wright – The Movie (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
S Curve/Expansion (UK), 2011. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99
Amazing, simply amazing – and a record that's way more than we were expecting! The Roots team up here with legendary Miami soul singer Betty Wright – in music that comes from a film project, but which really stands up brilliantly on its own – as a record that may well be Betty's best recording in decades! Questlove helped Betty with production, and the sound is a brilliant update on that 70s Miami Funk mode that first brought Wright to fame – lots of lean, snakey, TK-styled grooves – played by Roots members with a slight ear towards contemporary modes, but a damn keen appreciation for 70s soul all the way through! And although the set features a few famous guests – Snoop Dog, Lil Wayne, Joss Stone, and Lenny Williams – it's Wright who really blows our mind here – a hell of a singer after all these years, nestled in a perfect set of tunes to make her sparkle all over again. Titles include "Old Songs", "Real Woman", "In The Middle Of The Game", "Surrender", "Grapes On A Vine", "So Long So Wrong", "You & Me Leroy", "Look Around", and "Hollywould". LP, Vinyl record album

Yung WuShore Leave (with flexi disc) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Coyote/Bar None, 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $15.99
One of the most beautiful albums to come from the Hoboken scene in the 80s – a Feelies side project that's every bit as great as that group's albums from the time! In fact, the style here is almost an answer to the mode of their classic Good Earth album – a similar blend of hypnotic rhythms, basslines, and acoustic guitar – but with a changed-up version of the group, so that their roles are shifted, and the sound is as well! But like Good Earth, the music here is deeply personal – much more so than the Feelies at their start – a real breath of fresh air in the 80s scene, with Dave Weckerman on vocals, and fantastic criss-crossed guitars from Glenn Mercer and Bill Million. Titles include "Shore Leave", "The Empty Pool", "Big Day", "Eternal Ice", "Return To Zion", "Child Of The Moon", "Modern Farmer", "Asperation", and "Powderfinger". LP, Vinyl record album

Funky cuts from the Motown catalog – a set that mixes key classics with a number of overlooked album cuts – all to remind us that the Motor City label could get plenty heavy in the groove! There's a few cuts here you'll know from hip hop samples, a few you'll remember for their own fame, and a number of others that should hopefully come as a new discovery – and which really make the package great! Rare grooves from the French scene's trippiest years – the kind of cuts that will come as a good addition to your well-played records by Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin! Most of this work is much more obscure, but mostly comes from the same time – the late 60s and early 70s, despite the date range in the title – and the artists are working in an equally explosive approach to French pop – using elements from psychedelic music, electric jazz, and funk – to create these amazing little masterpieces in sound! Even if you don't dig the language, your ears will find plenty here to love – and titles include "L'Homme De L'Univers" by Bernard Chabert, "Les Magiciennes" by Richard De Bordeaux, "Le Musicien" by Lawrence, "La Fille A La Moto" by Dani, "Laisse Ta Main Dans Ma Main" by Philippe Chatel, "L'amour Sans Amour" by Michel Zacha, "Le Coeur En Julliet" by Isabelle, "Liberte Equalite Fraternite" by JJ & Beb, "La Fille Du Premier" by Paipllon, and "Licornes" by Igor Wakhevitch. Analog Africa (Germany), 1983. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One the most unusual albums in the fuana style from Cape Verde – an early 80s variation on the mode that was first created by fusion European accordions and local rhythms on the island of Santiago – taken here into much groovier electronic territory! Keyboards take over lots of the space that would have been handled by the handheld acoustic instrument in the past – and rhythms are often fast and somewhat frenetic – given electric basslines that bubble and dip as quickly as the keyboards, all topped by the vocals of Antonio Sanches, who's got this way of almost singing and shouting at the same time! The grooves are fast and hypnotic – and titles include "Amor De Irmao", "Bencao De Gente Grande", "Pinta Manta", "Bem De Fora", "Amizade Belo Pereira", and "Desgracada". LP, Vinyl record album

Resonance, Late 60s. New Copy 3LP Trifold ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful rare work from the late 60s years of Grant Green – a time when the guitarist was giving us some of his funk classics on Blue Note, and when he really seemed to be opening up his groove! That's definitely the case here – as the tracks aren't just funky, but also spin out at nicely long lengths – first on a set of tracks recorded for radio in Paris in 1969, with Green on guitar, Larry Ridley on bass, and Don Lamond on drums – working in a trio mode with a very different vibe than Grant's earlier work. Barney Kessel joins on second guitar on the tune "I Wish You Love", and other tracks include "I don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing", "Oleo", and "Untitled Blues". The second two thirds of the record are even more unbridled – and feature long live performances from the 1970 Antibes Festival – with a cool quartet that features Claude Bartee on tenor and Clarence Parker on Hammond. All tracks are well past the 10 minute mark, most pushing 20 – and titles include two versions of "Upshot", plus "Hi Heel Sneakers" and "Hurt So Bad". LP, Vinyl record album

Wonderful easy grooves – from an orchestra leader who couldn't read a note of music! The album was championed and produced by the Stones' Bill Wyman and engineered by rock heavyweight Glyn Johns – but this very deserving record didn't get its due at the time – perhaps because Decca didn't quite know how to sell such a record. Tracks include "Dreamworld", "Under The Rainbow", "Shades Of Orange", "Introspection (Pt. 1)", "Don't Take Me", "Loving, Sacred Loving", "She Said Yeah" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Grant GreenSlick – Live At Oil Can Harry's (180 gram pressing) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Resonance, 1975. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Late live work from the mighty Grant Green – cut at a time when the guitarist wasn't giving us nearly enough records as in his early years, and was also tending to record in a more polished setting! That's definitely not the case here – as the tracks are long, and the music is live – recorded with a very cool small combo that includes Emmanuel Riggins on electric piano, Ronnie Ware on bass, Greg Williams on drums, and Gerald Izzard on percussion – all really stretching out on the long tracks in the set! Titles include a massive 26 minute take on "How Insensitive", an 8 minute version of "Now's The Time", and a long medley that spins out for over 30 minutes – and which includes "Vulcan Princess", "Skin Tight", "Woman's Gotta Have It", "Boogie On Reggae Woman", and "For The Love Of Money". ✨✧ Marc JonsonYears (with bonus 7 inch) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Vanguard/Munster (Spain), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the fantastic lost albums on the Vanguard label from the early 70s – records that were years ahead of their time, but which barely got any initial circulation – partly because the label was always more of a folk and blues outlet, and partly because they were in decline at the time! Yet those factors hardly mar the quality of this unique effort by singer/songwriter Marc Johnson – an artist with a vibe that's completely different than most of his labelmates – almost a more pointed approach that wouldn't be possible in most corners until the UK indie scene of the next decade, mixed with just a few elements that maybe tie the sound to the year of its release. Johnson produced the album himself, and he gets these really strange qualities out of his vocals that further his very creative songwriting style – and even his guitar lines have a slightly odd tone too – sometimes almost pinched and thin, in a style that's very different than folksy. Titles include "Rainy Dues", "A Long Song", "Autopsy", "Return To The Relief", "The Tredmill", "Fly", Munich", and "Mother Jane". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johnny MathisI Love My Lady (colored vinyl) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Legacy, 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rare 80s groove set from Johnny Mathis – recorded with production from the Chic team of Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers – but oddly never issued at the time! Arrangements are by Gene Page, who does a good job of linking Johnny's more familiar sound with the sharper Edwards/Rodgers vibe – and the style is a nice change from some of the other soul modes that Mathis had explored in the 70s. Given that Johnny would soon return as a big star in the 80s, but with a vibe that's different than this, the album's a nice surprise – and titles include "Fall In Love", "Stay With Me", "Take Me", "Judy", "Love & Be Loved", and "Something To Sing About". Varese, 1985. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Not quite the Wild Style soundtrack, but still an early hip hop cinema classic – thanks to work from some of the bigger acts of the time! The movie's from a second generation of rap filmmaking – more narrative, less documentary – but over the course of years, the whole thing's come to stand as a great document of this moment in music – and in super-fresh style as well! Hip Hop tracks include "She's On It" by Beastie Boys, "I Can't Live Without My Radio" by LL Cool J, "If I Ruled The World" by Kurtis Blow, "All You Can Eat" by Fat Boys, and "Krush Groovin" by the Krush Groove All-Stars – which features Run-DMC, Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, and Sheila E! One of the most upbeat cuts ever recorded by Timeless Legend – a great little groove that has trumpets bubbling up along with the rhythms, as the group's own vocals soar out over the top with this wonderfully positive vibe! "Baby Don't Do This To Me" has a great approach too – still uptempo, but a bit more modern soul and clubby – with an excellent lead that really retains a soulful sound in the lyrics. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Beautiful blue-tinged work from Tia Blake – a folk singer at heart, but one who's also got this chilling sound that sometimes hits us in the same way as Nico's music during her early solo years! The tracks here were all recorded after Tia's one and only full album – and come as a much-needed addition to her too-small catalog. And even though these songs are demos, they have the same feel as Tina's only "studio" work from before – with titles that "My Father Is A Lonely Man", "White Bird", "Country Boy", "Wish I Was A Single Girl Again (Rehearsal)", "Child Ballad #95", and "Betty & Dupree". Mickey Hart's a long way from the Grateful Dead here – and working in that pan-global sense of rhythm that he brought to his solo projects from the 80s onwards! Given the atmospherics in the production, and the mix of electric and acoustic instrumental elements, and the easy stepping across cultural boundaries – there's almost a Peter Gabriel/Realworld vibe to the record at times. The groove here is pretty faithful – the set was recorded in Brooklyn, and doesn't have the too-commercial sound that it might if it were on a major label – and titles include "Elevate", "Cool Down", "Money Bags", "Deep In Love", "Stranded", "Frank Funk", "Better Man", and "The Golden Tie". A never-issued live set from the great last chapter in Sun Ra's career – that moment when the Arkestra was finally getting the global attention it deserved, and was working with even more confidence than before! During the period, Ra had this great way of folding in older strands of jazz with the group's always-creative vibe – swinging at times, soaring at others – and working with a larger ensemble here that includes Michael Ray and Eddie Gale on trumpets, Tyrone Hill on trombone, Knoel Scott on alto, John Gilmore on tenor, Danny Ray Thompson on baritone, John Ore on bass, and Bruce Edwards on electric guitar. Ra plays keyboards and piano,a nd June Tyson sings a bit – and Marshal Allen handles alto, piccolo, flute, and oboe. Beatball (Korea), 2003. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
Cho Young-Wuk's moody & cool soundtrack to Old Boy – the South Korean neo noir cult classic from 2003! The use of strings is ultra compelling, in classic, tense cinematic ways and much louder in the mix sometimes too, which pairs very well with the heaviness of the film – and but it's also got some really fresh use of contemporary clubby music – certainly influential on the soundtracks of dark, edgy dramas to come out of Hollywood and a real aesthetic debt to Oldboy! Includes "Look Who's Talking", "Somewhere In The Night", "The Count Of Monte Cristo", "The Searchers", "Look Back In Anger", "Out Of The Past", "Breathless", "Cul-De-Sac", "Kiss Me Deadly", "Point Blank", "The Last Waltz (Mido's Theme)" and more. ✨✧ Sam WaymonGanja And Hess (colored vinyl pressing) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Strange Disc, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The incredible soundtrack for the black cinema classic Ganja & Hess – a film that's often cited in the history of blacksploitation films, but which is much deeper overall! In some ways, both the movie and soundtrack are like Sweet Sweetback's Baadass Song – created in the same moment, and accessing audiences through the same channels – but completely different and distinct! The music here is sometimes soulful, but often quite experimental – and features lots of echo, studio effects, and tape tricks – often layering the sound in striking ways that could make some of the tracks resonate more strongly with musique concrete than with blacksploitation funk. Other moments are moody and atmospheric – while others are pure gospel. This album is the first-ever release of the soundtrack – and titles include "Blood Of The Thing", "Bongili Work Song 1", "Hess Is Stabbed", "Survival/Drive", "The Seduction", "March Blues", and "Theme From Blood Couple".
