Terrace MartinDrones (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
BMG, 2022. New Copy Gatefold ... $24.99 26.99
Terrace Martin is an artist who just keeps on getting deeper and deeper over the years – an already-great jazz musician, but one who's widened his scope to touch on broader currents of soul and hip hop – all of which really open up with the jazz-based energy at the core! At some level, this record might be to Martin's career what the Black Radio project was to Robert Glasper – as Terrace opens the door to all-star guests who include Kim Burrell, Leon Bridges, Ty Dolla $ign, Kendrick Lamar, Kamasi Washington, and even Glasper himself – while also finding space to serve up a few key tracks on his own, without any guests – tracks that may well be some of our favorite on the album. Titles include "Turning Poison Into Medicine", "Drones", "Leave Us Be", "Don't Let Go", "Listen", "Sick Of Cryin", "Leimert Park", "Tapped", and "Griots Of The Crenshaw District". Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, 9th Wonder, & Kamasi WashingtonDinner Party (with bonus download) ... LP
Sound Of Crenshaw, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
A fantastic blend of jazz, contemporary soul, and hip hop – served up by a group who can really get the sound right – Terrace Martin on keyboards and alto, Robert Glasper on keyboards, Kamasi Washington on tenor, and 9th Wonder on beats! Vocals on most tracks are by Phoelix, who really helps give the instrumentation some focus – yet the jazz component of the record is never buried under the lyrics, as the players get plenty of space to do their thing – with a vibe that's a bit like some of Glasper's Black Radio project, yet given much more the kind of cool Crenshaw vibe that we've loved in Martin's previous records. All four artists are credited with songwriting and production and you can really hear that balance in the sound – on tracks that include "Love You Bad", "Sleepless Nights", "The Mighty Tree", "Freeze Tag", "Luv U", and "From My Heart & Soul". ✨✧ Terrace MartinVelvet Portraits (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Ropeadope/De Rap Winkel (Belgium), 2016. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A jaw-dropper from Terrace Martin – the kind of record that sneaks on the market under everyone's ears, but will no doubt be one of those sets we'll all go back to again and again over the years! Martin's got a beautifully fresh take on funky jazz – steeped somewhat in the classic inspiration of the 70s era, but with a distinctly 21st Century execution – with crispy edges, cosmic currents, and a chunky approach to rhythm that makes the whole thing come across with a really subtle sort of power! The album's overflowing with guests – including Robert Glasper, Thundercat, Kamasai Washington, Keyon Harrold, and Laylah Hathaway – but there's also a core energy that's all Terrace's own, with lots of snakey keyboards that weave these magical tonal patterns in a wonderful way. Brilliant, and completely captivating – with tracks that include "Push", "Curly Martin", "Never Enough", "Turkey Taco", "Tribe Called West", "Think Of You", "Bromalia", and "Valdez Off Crenshaw" – a nice remake of the Donny Hathaway classic "Valdez In The Country". Leon BridgesGold-Diggers Sound ... LP
Columbia, 2021. New Copy ... $26.99 27.99
Take it from us, Leon Bridges is no gold-digger – as with music like this, he'll be bringing plenty of the gold himself – as the record is the sort that should really put Bridges over the top! Leon's already been giving us some great sounds in recent years – but this set has Bridges emerging as a fully-formed soul star in his own right – not just the voice that's been winning us over already, but a sense of confidence and power in his lyrics – not ego, but self – wide enough so share space here on collaborations with Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, and Ink – who all get a chance to bring a strong something extra, and not just show up as names on paper. Titles include "Born Again", "Motorbike", "Why Don't You Touch Me", "Magnolias", "Steam", "Sho Nuff", "Gold-Diggers", "Blue Mesas", "Don't Worry", and "Sweeter". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ BadbadnotgoodTalk Memory ... LP
Innovative Leisure, 2021. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really different sort of record from Badbadnotgood – and we mean that in the best way possible, as the group are really maturing and opening up their sound! The core blend of funk and jazz elements is still at play on the record – but there's also a more expansive vibe too, one that uses larger arrangements to really color in the sound and create all this sense of sonic wonder – a vibe that really comes through on one track that features guest work from cosmic musician Laraaji, and five more that feature the legendary Brazilian artist Arthur Verocai! In a way, the spacious quality of Verocai's own music might be a good way to describe the approach here – although the group certainly leave their own mark on the sound too. Titles include "City Of Mirrors", "Unfolding", "Love Proceeding", "Timid Intimidating", "Beside April", and "Talk Meaning" – the last of which features guest work from Terrace Martin and Brandee Younger too. LP, Vinyl record album
(NOTE – Black vinyl pressing, still sealed in the printed PVC outer sleeve, but with tiny splits on the corners of the spine.)
