Toshiko AkiyoshiTen Gallon Shuffle (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Baystate/RCA (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... $24.99
A hokey title and cover, but a great little record – a lesser-known gem from the Toshiko Akioshi big band, recorded in the mid 80s for Japanese release! Toshiko's still working strongly with reedman Lew Tabackin here – and as always, the sound of the reeds really make the record – not only on the bold ensemble passages, but also on the snakey, well-crafted solos that slide out of the fuller arrangements – letting Lew, Frank Wess, and Jim Snidero contribute some really great work on the longer tracks. Titles include "Ten Gallon Shuffle", "Fading Beauty", "Blue Dream", and "Happy Hoofer" – and in case you're wondering, that's a young Monday Michiru on the cover! CD

Frankie & The SpindlesCount To Ten – The Complete Singles Collection 1968 to 1977 ... CD
Playback, Late 60s/1970s. Used ... $7.99
One of the greatest groups to ever hit the Baltimore scene – and one who've never fully gotten their due, given that they recorded for a variety of different labels, on a career that never saw them issuing a full length LP! This set nicely corrects that fact, as it brings together cuts by the group from almost a ten year period – with a vibe that runs from late 60s harmony soul to some wonderful 70s moments that really have them stretching out, getting hip, and working through some new ideas. The group recorded much of this material in Philly and New Jersey – and get hip help from studio giants like Thom Bell, Bobby Martin, George Kerr, and Robert Banks – who create settings that are sophisticated, but really soar with the group's vocals – maybe a bit at a level that's like The Dells at their best. Titles include "Crazy About Your Love (parts 1 & 2)", "Handwriting On The Wall", "Count To Ten", "Memphis Underground", "For Your Love", "Tomorrow", "My Letter To You", "My Girl Is Made Of Candy", "There Is Beauty", "As Long As You Love Me", and "Making Up Time (parts 1 & 2)". Gerry MulliganGerry Mulligan & His Ten-Tette (10 inch LP) (German pressing) ... LP
Capitol (Germany), Early 50s. Very Good ... $11.99
An early cooker from Gerry Mulligan – working here with a real birth of the cool-styled group that includes Chet Baker and Pete Candoli on trumpets, Bud Shank on alto, John Graas on French horn, Bob Enevoldsen on trombone, and Chico Hamilton on drums – a really wonderful group that has a swing that's might lighter than you might guess from its size! The set is nicely arranged throughout – an early example of Gerry's powers in this respect – with plenty of thought in each tune, yet never so much so that the proceedings get too academic. Titles include "Rocker", "Walking Shoes", "Simbah", "Ontet", "Westwood Walk", "A Ballad", "Taking A Chance On Love", and "Flash". LP, Vinyl record album

Pete RugoloTen Trombones Like Two Pianos ... LP
Mercury, Early 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $7.99
One of a series of albums Kenton arranger Rugolo cut for Mercury in the early 60s – 10 Trombones Like 2 Pianos, 10 Trumpets & 2 Guitars, and 10 Saxophones & 2 Basses – all making use of differing instrumental lineups to showcase Rugolo's amazing command of sound color and tone! Pete first rose to fame in the Kenton group, and you'll hear plenty of Kenton-like inflections here – but trained towards a more dynamic hi-fi generation with wide sonic range! Titles on the 10 trombones session include "Angel Eyes", "Intermission Riff", "Love Is Here To Stay", "Like Love", and "10 Trombones Like". LP, Vinyl record album

The last in the classic run of Steeleye Span albums to feature the mighty Ashley Hutchings on bass – and a set that also has the group adding in a bit of Irish repertoire to their exploration of ancient English modes – but all in their fantastic blend of ancient and modern elements. If anything, the harmonies are even better than before – they've really found a way to combine along with the lead of Maddy Prior, in a style that has this real edge, almost evil quality at times – on titles that include "Four Nights Drunk", "Gower Wassail", "Captain Coulston", "When I Was On Horseback", and "Wee Weaver". Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99
Hipster sounds from the pre-hippie years – tracks that were either recorded by beatniks, or which have a very cool beat-themed style to them – all pulled together from a range of rare recordings at the end of the 50s and the start of the 60s! The sound here is maybe what you'd guess from the very groovy cover – a bit of jazz, and a bit of wit as well – tunes that poke a bit of fun at the intellectual underground, especially as it collides with the more mainstream sound of rock and roll – served up here on a dozen fab platters that sound even better in the company of each other! The album's divided up into a "mean side" and "bongo beatin side" – and titles include "Jet Black" by The Shadows, "Bongo Beating Beatnik" by Joe Hall & The Corvettes, "Goatee" by Joey Warren, "Theme From Von Hutch" by Jerry Madison & The Spacemen, "The Toast" by The Champs, "Money Money" by Benny Joy, "Gargantua" by Piltdown Men, and "Back Beat No 1" by The Rondels. Bear Family/Decca (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever package to ever do justice to the influential talents of Bill Anderson – one of the more important songwriters of the 50s country scene – and a budding singer who helped introduce whole new modes of expression to the music! Bill's tunes were sung by many – and had a depth of honest, heartfelt emotion that pushed country even past the important work of the initial postwar wave of talents – and his own recordings also included key use of spoken passages – the kind of asides that were really well-suited to Anderson's down-to-earth vocals, and which helped lay the groundwork for more complicated country tunes in years to come! The set features every track from Bill's eight albums for Decca, plus non-LP tracks from singles, duets with Jan Howard, unissued studio tracks, and even his rare singles for the TNT label – a huge package of 126 tracks in all, with detailed notes in the best Bear Family tradition. Yale University Press, 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Nearly 30 years of work from one of the best writers on rock and roll – served up here in a nearly-endless succession of columns all based around a single format – one that many other publications have copped over the years, but which Greil Marcus virtually invented at the Village Voice! That format is a "top ten", but one of seemingly unrelated genres and styles – music, of course, but also films, photographs, literature, and lots more – all used as platforms for a short expression of an idea by Marcus. Greil kept up the column for decades – and this hefty book features the complete contents of every one of its appearances – first in The Village Voice, then in Artforum, Salon, City Pages, Interview, and The Believer. Marcus has influenced countless folks over the years, and this column may well be some of his most widely-circulated writing – served up in a large softcover edition, 586 pages in all. Book

Harold AlexanderAre You Ready? ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $13.99
Reedman Harold Alexander cut very few albums as a leader – and this is one of the best! You're likely to hear Alexander's work in the background on other sessions, but at the time of this record he was also a visionary leader – perfect for the open, freewheeling vibe allowed by the Flying Dutchman label – in kind of a fusion between earlier 60s soul jazz modes, and some of the spiritual currents of the time! Harold blows both flute and soprano sax here – on a set of long tracks that also feature lots of great work from Neal Creque on piano – himself another musician who only got a bit of time to shine in the spotlight around this time, after a great legacy with Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers. Cornell Dupree also plays guitar on the album – which features just three nicely long tracks – the funky "Quick City Revisited", a sweet cover of "Watermelon Man", and a ten minute jamming take on "High Heel Sneakers". Isabelle AntenaEn Cavale ... CD
Giant, 1986. Used ... $4.99
Beautifully sweet and jazzy from the lovely Isabelle Antena – recording here under her own name, but still very much in the mode of the French trio from which she emerged! The record actually came about during the later years of Antena – at a time when the group was still recording sporadically, and still working very much in the spirit of the bossa and jazz styles of their debut. On this set, Isabelle steps forward a bit more as a lead singer, and the overall groove shows a bit more of a love of soul – blended together here with the jazz influences in a way that's very similar to the best side of Sade in her early years, but also handled here with a leaner, more personal indie style. There's a great 80s pop vibe running through the set – one that makes for some nicely catchy numbers, as well as a few dancefloor mis-steps! Titles include "Play Back", "Easy Street", "Seaside Weekend", "Magic Words", "How Can They Tell", and "Ten Minutes". CD

Jon AppletonAppleton Syntonic Menagerie ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99
An incredible record from the glory days of Flying Dutchman! The session's one of a rare few cut by electronic musician Jon Appleton, and it's a stunning blend of analogue electronics and sonic cut up material – a record of musique concrete compositions to rival the greatest work coming out of France in the late 50s and early 60s! Appleton's approach to the material is at some level like that of Pierre Henry, but at another level, he's also using some bits of late 60s Americana – such as a Chef Boyardee commercial, or snippets of interviews done in an airport – and it's elements like these that give the set a darkness that makes it even more compelling. Titles include "Chef D'Oeuvre", "Newark Airport Rock", "Times Square Times Ten", "Second Scene Unobserved", "Nyckelharpen", and "The Visitation". CD

BlundettoGood Good Things ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99
The title might seem familiar – given that Blundetto's first album was called Bad Bad Things – but this record really shows a strong evolution of his sound over the ten years since that release – the shifting sense of sound between hip hop, global roots, and more dynamic elements – sounding even better here than on any previous records! Blundetto works with production help from Blackjoy – in a mode that might have been born in hip hop studio techniques, but which here has much more of a French post-colonial vibe – wrapping together different global elements, soulful expressions, and jazzy flourishes with effortless ease – into a style that's completely his own overall. Titles include "Fly High", "Pais Azucar", "Barcelona", "Sunday In The Club", "Feel The Cold", "Bingi", "Menina Mulher Da Pele Preta", "Antiguas", and "Mo'Dinero". CD

Peter Brotzmann Chicago TentetChicago Tentet At Molde 2007 ... CD
Okka Disk, 2007. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99 13.99
A 10th Anniversary performance by the Chicago Tentet – a wonderful group that's become the fruitful union of saxophonist Peter Brotzmann with a younger generation of players who were working heavily on the Chicago scene at the time! Back when the group first started, it was something of an experiment – but over the following decade, the ensemble won great attention for their playing, and for good reason too – considering the solo contributions of players like Ken Vandermark and Mats Gustafsson on reeds, Joe McPhee on trumpet and tenor, Johannes Bauer on trombone, Kent Kessler on bass, and Paal Nilssen Love on drums – all working under the visionary leadership of Peter Brotzmann! The tracks are all somewhat long and open-ended – almost more spacious than on other Chicago Tentet records, with a freely improvised feel. Titles include "Ten By Ten", "Little By Little", and "Step By Step". CD

Fonit/Schema (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $26.99
Exactly the kind of record that makes us love sound library records so much – and definitely the sort that sets the style apart from anything else we can think of! Both Sandro Brugnolini and Giorgio Carnini turn in some great work here – a mindblowing mix of modes over the space of ten short tracks – some tunes a cascading array of instrumentation, in a hip groove that's neither American jazz or soundtrack funk, but a special space of its own! Other tunes use an electronic approach that's years ahead of its time – as groovy as 60s analogue, but a lot darker, too – in ways that the rest of the world might not touch until the German new wave. The balance is almost even between swinging groovers and darker electronic cuts – and titles include "Grinta", "Azione CIA", "Scalo Clandestino", "Alambicco Cibernetico", "Strutture Generative", "Omicido Bianco", and "CIA Massacre". Mike CuozzoMike Cuozzo With The Costa Burke Trio ... CD
Jubilee/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1956. Used ... $11.99
One of the few albums as a leader from Mighty Mike Cuozzo – a tight tenor player with a great sort of 50s swing! The set's the kind of no-nonsense, well-blown effort you might expect from Sonny Stitt or Seldon Powell at the time – tunes that pack in plenty over a relatively short space – really transformed by Mike's deft talents on the tenor, with a surprising degree of soul in the mix as well! Rhythm is by Eddie Costa on piano, Vinnie Burke on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums – and the whole thing's got the solid feel of a lost Roost session. Titles include "Blue Jeans", "Bounce For Mike", "Ten AM", "Lover Man", and "That Old Feeling". CD

Paul DesmondSkylark ... CD
CTI, 1974. Used ... $7.99
A stunning 70s set from the great Paul Desmond – one that has the tremendous alto player finding an even fresher groove than before – yet all without losing any of the class and control that made him so great in the 50s and 60s! Don Sebesky arranged the set, but most of the instrumentation is nice and lean – small group modes that allow Paul's alto to soar out in the lead, often alongside some excellent guitar work from Gabor Szabo and Gene Bertoncini – the latter of whom provides accompaniment that takes us back to some of Jim Hall's music with Desmond. Bob James plays a bit of piano on the record, and rhythm is by Ron Carter on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Ralph MacDonald on percussion – plus a bit of cello from George Ricci, who shades tunes in with a mighty nice sound. But as you'd guess, the main focus is on Desmond's sublime alto sax – on titles that include "Was A Sunny Day", "Take Ten", "Music For A While", and of course, "Skylark". CD

A great little fuzzy funky rock combo from the late 60s – one that uses electrified horns, fuzz bass, heavy guitars, and lots of organ and electric piano too! The grooves are mostly instrumentals and really revel in the intensity of the fuzz – a bit psychedelic at times, bluesy at others, but always thumping with a good bottom groove – thanks, no doubt, to arranger Frank Hunter, who we think is the same guy that made some pretty great 60s records with his Huntsmen group! Titles include "Aquarius", "Freeway", "L David Sloane", "Garbage Can Ballet", "Roundtrip", "Ten Little Indians", "Annie's Place", and "The Joint". LP, Vinyl record album

Rock-solid work from a rock-solid drummer – the mighty Joe Farnsworth, working here with a core trio that includes Kenny Barron on piano and Peter Washington on bass, plus guest trumpet from Wynton Marsalis on four of the album's ten tracks! The Marsalis presence is nice, but we almost like the trio tracks even better – as it feels like Farnsworth, Barron, and Washington have really found their groove – at a level that's different than some of Joe's recordings with more familiar partners – like David Hazeltine and John Webber – looser, more open at times, and really showing off some different sides of Farnsworth's rhythmic conception. Titles include "One For Jimmy Cobb", "Monk's Dream", "Time Was", "The Good Shepherd", "Hesitation", "Darn That Dream", "Lemuria", and "Star Crossed Lovers". CD

Merle HaggardPortrait Of Merle Haggard/Keep Movin' On ... CD
BGO/Capitol (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A pair of Capitol Records killers from Merle Haggard – back to back on a single CD! First up is A Portrait Of Merle Haggard – a 1969 album that shows just how much he'd grown and matured during his 60s years at Capitol Records – and almost a celebration of all that time, given how many great songs Merle manages to put inside the record! The set begins with the sublime "Working Man's Blues" – a tune that's got jazzier currents than Hag ever had a few years back, but which also delivers a very pointed message to the bulk of his audience – and creates a new anthem for Merle in the process. The record then progresses with a host of other fantastic tracks, half originals by Haggard, and all showing the many moods of the maturing singer – "What's Wrong With Stayin Home", "Silver Wings", "I Die Ten Thousand Times A Day", "I Came Close To Living Alone", "Who Do I Know In Dallas", and a great version of "She Still Thinks I Care". Keep Movin On is a mid 70s effort from Merle Haggard, and one that shows just how much he continued to bring his best to his work for Capitol Records – not just in his vocals, but in his songwriting too – as the album features almost all original material by Haggard! The mood nicely varies, and Hag hits some of those maturing masculine modes that were coming in with some of his contemporaries – blending "stay at home with the wife" sort of songs with others that echo more of the hellraising and sadness of younger years – all as a beautiful testament to his genius! Titles include "Movin' On", "Life's Like Poetry", "September In Miami", "Here In Frisco", "Always Wanting You", "Kentucky Gambler", "A Man's Gotta Give Up A Lot", "I've Got A Yearning", and "These Memories We're Making Tonight". Stax/Craft, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 4CD & 7 inch ... $46.99 59.99
An incredible tribute to the genius of Memphis Soul legend Issac Hayes – one that's overflowing with unreleased material, and presented in a totally cool package! The set's shaped like a 7" single box – and is book-like, with very detailed notes by Stax historian Robert Gordon, alongside page after page of vintage photos and other cool images, too. And inside some of the pages are 4 super-cool CDs – each of which has a different theme that further exposes Ike's genius! CD1 is titled "Soul Songwriter Soul Producer" – and features two dozen tracks that Hayes handled for Stax/Volt – material by The Astors, Danny White, David Porter, Floyd Newman, Johnnie Taylor, Charlie Rich, Judy Clay, The Charmels, Soul Children, Billy Eckstine, The Emotions, Ruby Johnson, and others. CD2 is titled "Volt & Enterprise Singles" – and features all the 7" tracks released by Isaac Hayes during his time on those labels – including two tracks done as a duet with David Porter, two more as Sir Isaac & The Do-Dads, and even a rare Radio Spot too! Things really get interesting on CD3, titled "Cover Man" – which features those cool, long extrapolations of other folks' songs that Hayes pioneered on his albums – but included here with unreleased material too. There's a great never-heard take on "Windows Of The World" – plus unreleased PUSH Black Expo material from 1970 – live takes on "Ten Commandments Of Love", "Just Want To Make Love To You/Rock Me Baby", "I Stand Accused", and "Stormy Monday". CD4 is maybe the coolest of the bunch – titled "Jam Master", with those long grooves that Ike did in the studio while putting together records. Almost all the tracks on CD4 are previously unissued – including "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "Black Militant's Place", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Do Your Thing (extended jam)", "Groove A Thon (extended jam)", and "Hung Up On My Baby (extended jam)". And if all that isn't enough, the set even comes with a cool 7" replica of Ike's first single for the Youngstown label – "Laura We're On Our First Go-Round". CD

An amazing little album from the Isley Brothers – one in which the group manage to explore their growing love of the electric guitar, yet somehow sound even more soulful than before! The music is slinky and seductive, with a wonderful style that's never too overly funky – just laidback and flowing, with a vibe that's sometimes mellow, sometimes a bit more upbeat – but never too over the top or rocking. Titles include the group's the monster cut "That Lady" (parts 1 & 2) – a totally righteous groover, even if it has been in a million commercials over the years – and their cover of Seals & Croft's epic "Summer Breeze", which is ten times doper than the original! Other tracks include "Listen To The Music", "If You Were There", "What It Comes Down To", and "Sunshine (Go Away Today)". CD includes bonus live version of "That Lady". CD

Stan KentonAdventures In Blues ... CD
Capitol, 1961. Used ... $12.99
With Stan at the helm, you can bet that this set is anything but "blues" in the traditional sense – and is instead more one of Kenton's tone poems of color – tuned to the darker hues of the spectrum, and served up perfectly in a batch of beautifully shimmering arrangements! There's still plenty of Kenton's modern touches in the way the album's laid out, but the overall feel is moody and blue-toned – arranged mostly by Gene Roland, who also composed all the original tracks for the set. Titles include "Dragonwyck", "Blue Ghost", "Exit Stage Left", "Aphrodisia", "Fitz", and "The Blues Story". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "Ten Bars Ago", "Lady Luck", and "Night At The Gold Nugget (first version)". CD

The legendary George Lewis plays both trombone and electronics here – both of which are a fantastic addition to the core trio efforts of Harald Kimming on violin, Daniel Studer on bass, and Alfred Zimmerlin on cello! These guys are unlike any string trio you might know from the world of serious music – as they play freely and openly, with as many sharp edges on their own instruments as Lewis brings to his – this cascading confluence of strings and tones, with lots of elements that remind us of the deeper sonic leanings of Lewis at his most experimental! This is the album where they started bringing some odd synth textures to the sound, and it's to Zeppelin's eternal credit that this doesn't compromise their blues-reverent hard rock one bit! There's no better Zeppelin album when it comes to giving the fans what they want, while chasing the band's adventurous muses at the same time. Stax, 1967. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
Two great Memphis instrumental groups, back to back on one CD – in a smoking little live set that keeps the Stax Records sound strong – even away from the studio! The set's actually heavier on work by Booker T & The MGs than it is cuts by The Mar-Keys – as Book and crew handle seven out of the record's ten tracks – all with that sublime Hammond-heavy groove that makes them so great – and which takes on an even rawer sound here in the live setting! But The Mar-Keys are pretty sweet too – maybe a bit looser than on their singles – and we mean that in a good way. Booker T & The MGs play "Green Onions", "Hip Hug Her", "Tic Tac Toe", "Booker Lou", "Gimme Some Lovin", "Outrage", and "Red Beans & Rice" – and The Mar-Keys serve up "Last Night", "Grab This Thing", and "Philly Dog". A beautifully dynamic set from Mohamed Issa Haji – aka Matona – a musician from Zanzibar with a specialty in Taarab, which is an unusual hybrid of African, Arabic, and Indian musical styles! The group here features Matona on oud, vocals, and percussion – illuminated by very colorful elements from guitar, tenor, bass, drums, violin, and percussion – plus vocals from the rest of the group as well – and Gora Mohamed Gora plays the rich-voiced qanun on three of the album's ten tracks, which adds this depth to the record that's amazing! Instrumental passages dominate more than the vocals – and there's some really fantastic interplay between some of the Norwegian musicians in the group too – on titles that include "Aziza", "Sikitiko", "Alaminadura", "Zena", "Ashairejea", and "Ashiki Baya". A catchy little soundtrack for this late 70s Italian sex spoof – a film in which the lead character's wife discovers his philandering, then decides to pimp him out to the neighbors! The score begins with a jaunty vocal tune – "Nun Me Scuccia" – which is then echoed in a few other tracks, and mixed with the kind of lighter, playful melodies that were more common in Italian comedies during the period – still mostly with acoustic instrumentation, but also touched with occasional keyboard or guitar lines. The vocal track starts and ends the score – and the set features ten more instrumental numbers in between! CD

Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
An early moment of genius from the legendary Lee Perry – and a set that uses Django imagery from Italian westerns to serve up a "bad boy" version of Jamaican music for the late 60s! Even at this early point, the sounds are mindblowing – rocksteady brought through a really weird sort of filter – so that lots of familiar instruments are turned inside out, and used to create these incredibly far-out sounds – especially the keyboards, which get really weird tunings and timings – and the reed passages, which sometimes have surprisingly exotic touches. Production is a big part of this approach, yet is surprisingly understated too – especially in comparison to later Perry productions – and titles include "Cold Sweat", "Live Injection", "Ten To Twelve", "One Punch", "Touch Of Fire", "Night Doctor", and the classic "Man From MI5". The tunes feature plenty of lively lyrics from Porter – a singer with a great voice, and a way of presentation that's oozing with charm – on titles that include "Ten Penny Nail", "Gimmie More", "Not Me", "Miss Daisy", "Rum & Coconut Water", "Names Of Funny Places", "Ugly Woman", and "Bargie". Prince Far ITrojan Albums Collection (Free From Sin/Jamaican Heroes/Voice Of Thunder/Musical History) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99
Four fantastic albums from the legendary Prince Far I! The set begins with the classic Free From Sin – Great early work from Prince Far I – a stunning mix of reggae and dub, with a righteous quality that really gives the prince his title amongst 70s Jamaican royalty! Backing is by a version of the Roots Radics – with the excellent Style Scott on drums, Errol Holt on Bass, Bingy Bunny, Sowell and Chinna Smith on guitar, Bobby Kalphat and Snappin on keys, Bobby Ellis and Deadly Headly on horns, and Bongo Herman and Ras Millinek on percussion – but the real key to the sound is the way that Prince Far I produces the whole thing, and mixes his own sinister vocals with the heady, bottom-heavy rhythms – all with a quality that matches Lee Scratch Perry at his best! Titles include "Free From Sin", "Light Of Fire", "Reggae Music", "I & I Are the Chosen One", "Don't Deal With Folly", "Call On I In Trouble", "When Jah Ready You Got To Move", and "Siren". Jamaican Heroes is a totally great album by Prince Far I – and a set that already shows him building that crucial London/Kingston bridge that would be such a big part of his sound! The album features work from Sly & Robbie, and the killer drums of Style Scott on rhythm – but also includes contributions by London hipsters Viv Albertine & Ari Up (of the Slits), and David Toop (noted music writer and historian) – quite a mix, and all brought together wonderfully by the Prince's production, and really unique vocal approach. Titles include "Jamaican Heroes", "Prison Discipline", "Musical History", "Natty Champion", and "Golden Throne". Next up is a classic from Prince Far I – Voice Of Thunder couldn't be a more appropriate album title or moniker! Recorded at Channel One in 1981 with incredible analog dub production, it fully carries the grit, murk, heavy and heady soul of the 70s into the new decade –even if the sound is ultimately a bit different then the what he delivered in the 70s. That thunderous voice toasting over the rhythms is as incredible as ever – over the commanding bass of Professor Larry Silvera, tripped out drums & percussion by Jah Lloyd & Scully, occasional swirling keys by Steely, Tarzan and Tony Asher and the other great Channel One players. Titles include "Ten Commandments", "Every Time I Hear The Word", "Head Of The Buccaneer", "Shall Not Dwell In Wickedness", "Skinhead", and "Hold The Fort". Musical History is one of the last albums ever issued by Prince Far I – and a set that marks a fantastic cap to a too-short career! The Prince's vocal contributions are as impeccable as his dubby production work – and titles include "At The Cross", "More We Are Together", "Take Heed Frontline", "What You Gonna Do On Judgement Day", and "Tell Them About Jah Love". ✨✧ Woody ShawLive In Bremen 1983 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Elemental, 1983. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
We completely love the music of Woody Shaw – but unfortunately, the legendary trumpeter left this planet way too soon, and only gave us about 20 years of recordings! Fortunately, the vaults have yielded some gems like this over the years – unreleased live material that not only adds to the space in Woody's catalog, but also really shows us how special he could be in a live setting! Shaw's got this strength of imagination and inner spirituality that never falters at all, even when the tracks are stretching out nice and long – which they really do here, as almost all the numbers move way past the ten minute mark – and have Woody blowing magnificent solos throughout. The group is great, too, with Mulgrew Miller on piano, Tony Reedus on drums, and Stafford James on some especially crucial bass – an instrument that always seems to drive Shaw onto new heights when it's handled the right way, which it definitely is here. ✨✧ Zoot SimsZoot Sims Recorded Live At EJ's ... CD
Storyville/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1981. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Zoot Sims is one of those players who always seems to open up more in a live date than a studio session – and this great little album is key testament to that fact! The set was recorded live at EJ's in Atlanta in the early 80s, but it's got a sense of imagination and fire that are totally great – and which show that, even in these years when Zoot wasn't at the top of the list as big names in jazz, he was still working tremendously to expand his sound and musical vision. The album's got some especially great work on soprano sax, alongside more familiar lines on tenor – all blown with a nice edge, even on more standard tunes. Other players include Yancy Korossi on piano, Dwewy Sampson on bass, and James Martin on drums – and Rick Bell plays additional tenor on three of the album's ten tracks. Titles include "I Got It Bad", "In A Mellow Tone", "Jitterbug Waltz", "That Old Devil Called Love", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "Lester Leaps In". CD

Gallo/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A fantastic set from 70s South Africa – and a record that maybe has a lot more of an American funk vibe than you'd expect! The style is nice and lean, and is often in a mode that echoes some of the cooler underground disco of the late 70s on the east coast – almost as if these cuts could have come from one of the P&P family of labels, instead of South Africa's big Gallo imprint – save for some especially nice moments that almost recall the early 70s electric funk of Hugh Masekela! All tunes are nice and long, all instrumentals – and the "disco specials" are original tunes that mix clubby rhythms with a variety of different sounds and styles – really cool, very fresh, and not even in the same territory as some of the West African/Paris hybrids of the time. Titles include the ten minute classic "Disco Stomp" – plus "We Did It", "Barney's Moaning", and "GG Is Talking". CD

One of the grooviest records ever cut by the legendary Joe Turner – a set that takes him far from his Kansas City roots, and his 50s R&B for Atlantic Records – into a mode that's maybe even more soul-based overall! The great Gene Page handles the backings here – with a tightness that comes from his years on the LA soul scene, and which mixes with the bluesier currents in the instrumentation to push Joe into some righteous late 60s grooves. Many tracks are older, but still have a cool new vibe – and the use of electric bass on the record really creates a nice sense of energy at the bottom. The album's a great transition for Veloso – a set that's served up with some of the newly personal qualities his music developed in London, but which still has a good ear for experimentation and keeping things interesting. Porter Wagoner & Dolly PartonOnce More/Two Of A Kind/The Right Combination Burning The Midnight Oil/Together Always ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
Four classic RCA albums from the team of Porter Wagoner & Dolly Parton – all brought together in a single set! Once More is a pivotal moment in the duo career of Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton – both solo singers who'd worked together on earlier records, but really seemed to hit their stride around the time of this set! Both Porter and Dolly gel together perfectly – often singing together, not trading back and forth as much – in ways that only make the lyrics of the songs resonate more strongly. Titles include "I Know You're Married But I Love You Still", "Daddy Was An Old Time Preacher Man", "A Good Understanding", "Let's Live For Tonight", "Once More", "Fight & Scratch", and the tear-jerker "Ragged Angel". Two Of A Kind is a great pairing of Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton – one an aging country singer, yet still in his prime – the other a soon-to-be superstar, getting her youth balanced out a bit more by the presence of Porter! The tunes here are the perfect sort of music for the pair to work together – some songs that have separate parts that give each singer a distinct character – others harmonized together in a mighty nice way. Dolly wrote a fair bit of material for the set, and Porter had a hand in a few too – and titles include "Oh The Pain Of Loving You", "Possum Holler", "The Flame", "The Fighting Kind", "Two Of A Kind", "There'll Be Love", "Is It Real", and "Curse Of The Wild Weed Flower". On the next album, Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton are definitely the Right Combination – singing here with a chemistry that not only reflects Dolly's years on stage with Porter, but which also echoes some of the tension of their relationship backstage! The tunes are a mix of originals – some by Wagoner, some by Parton – plus a few other well-chosen numbers – all of which expand their duo style nicely, marking it as way more than just some record company attempt to cash in by bringing two stars together! Titles include "More Than Words Can Tell", "The Right Combination", "Her & The Car & The Mobile Home", "Burning The Midnight Oil", "On & On", and "The Fog Has Lifted". The title of Together Always is maybe a bit un-prophetic – given that a few years later, Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton would hardly be together – but the record's a great one from that wonderful stretch when the pair could really make magic singing together on record! The tunes are all original numbers – some by Dolly, some by Porter – new material that makes the album every bit as strong as solo efforts by either singer, and which show that these RCA duo sessions weren't just filler material in the catalog! Titles include "Love's All Over", "Take Away", "Lost Forever In Your Kiss", "Looking Down", "Poor Folks Town", "Ten Four Over & Out", and "You & Me Her & Him". CD

A great one from Nancy Wilson – a set that has the singer working with full arrangements from Billy May, who's got this surprisingly subtle approach at times that works really well with the soulful currents in Nancy's vocals! The approach is almost more like Oliver Nelson, especially with the bluesier currents that May brings into the horns at points – and the album scores equally well on the groovers and the more slinky numbers that are especially wonderful – almost an update of an earlier Dakota Staton mode, but a bit more hip – as we'd expect from Wilson! Not the usual sort of Nigerian sounds you'd hear on a collection focused on Lagos – and instead, music that was recorded far from the central city of the nation – often with a much rootsier vibe overall! Those rare treasures are brought forth here – in a beautiful package that's also overflowing with fantastic notes that finally give this lost history its due – all handled by Al Kent – who's a hell of a mixer himself, as well as an underground club historian. 3CD set is overflowing with gems – and titles include "I Just Wanna Say I Love You (John Luongo rmx)" by Leon Collins, "What About Love (Tony Gioe rmx)" by Marboo, "Ten Percent (Walter Gibbons Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Double Exposure, "Inside America (Rick Gianatos disco queen acetate edit)" by Juggy Murray Jones, "Dancing Free (John Luongo rmx)" by Hot Ice, "Black Water Gold (Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by The Sunshine Band, "Magic Bird Of Fire (Francois Kevorkian Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "It's Good For The Soul (Jay Negron Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "My Love Is Free (Walter Gibbons disco madness rmx)" by Double Exposure, "Reaching Out For Happiness (Jonathan Fearing rmx)" by Fay Hauser, "Let Me Be Your Fantasy (Tom Savarese rmx)" by Love Symphony Orchestra, "The Beat Goes On & On (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Ripple, "I Wanna Be Near You (John Morales Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Ruby Andrews, "I've Been Looking For Somebody (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "The Disco Scene (Rick Gianatos rmx)" by Lake Shore Drive, "Bumpsie's Whipping Cream (Tom Savarese rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "Janice (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Skip Mahoney, "My Number's Up (Tee Scott rmx)" by The Salsoul Orchestra, "The Love Bug Done Bit Me Again (David Todd rmx)" by Skyliners, "LA Sunshine (Robert Ouimet rmx)" by Aura, "Love Has Come My Way (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Tony Valor Sound Orchestra, "Handsome Ma (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Sparkle Tuhran & Friends, "Love Thang (Tee Scott rmx)" by First Choice, "Burn Me Up (Jellybean Benitez edit)" by Kay Gees, "Love Is The Message (Tee Scott rmx)" by Brooklyn Express, "Changes (Jellybean Benitez rmx)" by Chain Reaction, "J'Ouvert (Frank Sestito rmx)" by John Gibbs & The Jam Band, "By The Way You Dance (Bobby DJ Guttadaro rmx)" by Bunny Sigler, "It's Good For The Soul (Walter Gibbons disco madness version)" by Salsoul Orchestra, and "It's A Better Than Good Time (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by Gladys Knight & The Pips. A very cool little record – even though it's a bit out of the ordinary for the Louis Armstrong catalog! The set was recorded during that 60s stretch when Louis was emerging as a hell of a charming singer – one who scored a few big pop hits, in a mode that he also invokes here – providing vocal renditions of some of the best Disney theme tunes from the postwar years! The mix of material is very nice – some obvious numbers by the Shermans, mixed with more surprising earlier tracks – and arrangements are by Maxwell Davies, who keeps things groovier than most talents in the Disney studios might have. A great addendum to the famous Augusta, GA live set that was first issued as Sex Machine, then as Live At Home With His Bad Self – extra material from those recordings, brought together here in a special album of their own! The set features some great bits from in and around the sessions – including two takes on the James Brown funky remake of "Spinning Wheel", and Marva Whitney singing the Stax classic "Respect"! But the longer tracks are even better – and the set features the complete take of "Baby Here I Come" – well over ten minutes long – plus the long "A Talk With James Brown/You Got To Have A Job" – a long duet between Marva Whitney and James, which was originally trimmed down for Marva's Live & Lowdown At The Apollo album. Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really beautiful record from Rob Mazurek – and one of his most different recordings in years! The set's a quartet date, recorded live – and has especially strong input from Kris Davis, who plays both piano and prepared piano – using the acoustic instrument to inflect the music of Mazurek in a really different way! Also great is bassist Ingegbrigt Haker Flaten – always a great presence, but maybe more conventionally swinging at times here than usual, if that's possible. Although the bass may well be driven strongly by the drums of Chad Taylor – a longtime partner of Rob's, but also really showing the growth he's experienced since their more frequent projects from ten to twenty years back. Mazurek himself is almost understated, but in a way that lets the whole group work strongly as a whole – and Rob plays piccolo, trumpet, and modular synth! CD

Stunning! This is one of Jackie McLean's best-ever albums, and it's a haunting mix of hard bop and some of the more modernist tendencies that would inform his "new thing" period. Butch Warren plays bass, and he drives the set with an intensity that reminds us of Mingus – and which fits perfectly with Jackie's writing, which is influenced here clearly by the time he spent with Mingus. The title cut is one of the best tracks you'll ever hear on Blue Note, and both Jackie's alto and Tommy Turrentine's trumpet play fantastic solos all the way through. Sonny Clark's on piano, compin' hard and loud, and the whole LP rolls along with a fantastic sense of urgency that you don't always hear on Blue Note. Bass is by Butch Warren, drums by Billy Higgins, and titles include "Enitnerrut", "Lost", "Five Will Get You Ten", "A Fickle Sonance", and "Sundu". CD

Really wonderful work from The Pretty Things – a vastly-underrated group who work here with a depth that rivals bigger contemporaries like The Kinks or The Who! Like both of those groups, The Pretty Things have a heck of a lot going on musically – a real range of styles that goes beyond simple catchy pop – showing a growth in style and sound that's really tremendous, given the way they sounded just a few albums back. The songs are almost all originals, and filled with themes that run from the fierce to the fragile – often pointed pictures of the human condition, delivered with surprising sensitivity. The album features some added orchestrations from Reg Tilsley, and titles include "Tripping", "My Time", "One Long Glance", "House Of Ten", "Out In The Night", "Death Of A Socialite", "The Sun", "Children", and "Bright Lights Of The City". A pretty wild album from legendary saxophonist Sonny Stitt – one that's quite different from the bop of his roots, but equally groovy in its own sort of way! The album is a handful that Sonny cut in the 70s with an electric vibe – similar to his work for Chess and Prestige records ad the time, and a great new outlet for his maturing reed style – thanks to the handling of the Flying Dutchman label! The cover and title might make you assume the set's an all-out funk affair – but instead, it's a reworking of older Stitt modes, into a hip 70s style – with keyboards and piano from Mike Wofford, and some additional work on saxes from Pee Wee Ellis and Frank Strozier – both players who provide nice backing to Sonny's solos. Highlights include the mighty ten minute title track, "Dumpy Mama" – and the cut "Jason", which has a slight Latin vibe, thanks to percussion from Ray Barretto. Other titles are nice, too – reworked standards with a 70s vibe – including "It Might As Well Be Spring", "Just Friends", and "Danny Boy For Ben". CD

A sprawling double-length album from Bay Area rockers Stoneground – a set that's got more than enough space for the large ensemble to really show off and shine! The group's noteworthy as being a post-Beau Brummels project of Sal Valentino – who handles vocals and guitar here, as part of a ten-piece lineup with a very collaborative vibe – different singers on many of the tracks, and a sound that mixes roots-oriented rock with some occasional soul touches too – but all with a spirit that's relatively spontaneous, and never as canned as later efforts like this. Female singers include Lynne Hughes, Annie Sampson, Lydia Moreno, and Deirdre La Porte – and the first three sides were recorded live, for radio broadcast – the fourth in the studio in LA. Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD set ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A heavy little set that looks at the big rise of blues modes on the UK scene in the late 60s – but one that should be thought of more as the sound of rock in transition, rather than a lavish adherence to American blues modes! In fact, half of these groups are ones that you might not think of as blues-based at all – but who, like the Rolling Stones a few years before, drew heavy inspiration from the guitar giants in the US blues scene – yet quickly took their own music in very different directions, and even different than the Stones. There's a quality here that's almost more like a pre-progressive sound at times, but also an evolution from some of the R&B and soul that the mod scene were into too – and the whole thing captures a really exciting, really revolutionary time in British music – along with a big booklet of notes on all the many groups included. The set list is great – not big hits, but lots of overlooked gems – big groups mixed with smaller, forgotten acts – with 56 tracks by artists who include Icarus, Bloodwyn Pig, Killing Floor, Free, Zany Woodruff Operation, Ten Years After, Duster Bennett, The Deviants, Alexis Korner, Dr K's Blues Band, Mike Cooper, Sam Apple Pie, Black Cat Bones, Siren, Steamhammer, Liverpool Scene, Skid Row, Stack Waddy, Heavy Jelly, Jasper, Christine Perfect, Shakey Vick, Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Love Sculpture, and many others. Mercury, 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 early albums by the great Shirley Horn – back to back on one CD! On Loads Of Love, Shirley sings some somber ballads over large orchestrations by Jimmy Jones – in a mode that's different from recent work, but which also shows that she's a great singer with a really sensitive style. The groove's not as open as on some of her small combo recordings, but that also brings out a side of Shirley that you don't always hear on record – a committed, honest, slightly sad style that's quite striking, considering that this was one of Shirley's first albums. Titles include "That's No Joke", "Love For Sale", "Ten Cents A Dance", "Who Am I?", "Only The Lonely", and "Wild Is Love". Horn With Horns is hip stuff from Shirley – very mature and swinging jazz, despite any hokiness you might expect from the "with horns" tag. Arrangements are by Quincy Jones, Thad Jones, and Billy Byers – and the set list features some good current numbers, and a bunch of standards, all redone nicely in a 60s sophistijazz style. Tracks include "Wee Small Hours", "That Old Black Magic", "The Great City", "On The Street Where You Live", and "Let Me Love You". CD

The other side of Monday Michiru – or, more appropriately, the early side of the great soul singer – given that her roots in jazz go very far back, to the time when she was the child of two very famous jazz musicians! This set has Monday reunited with her mother – the legendary pianist Toshiko Akioshi – who works exclusively on piano, in this wonderfully pointed, introspective style – while Monday both sings in a jazz style, and plays flute as well – an instrument she first used on record when she was about ten years old. The reunion is a wonderful one – and while Toshiko's every bit as great as you'd expect, we find ourselves falling in love with Monday even more than before – as her handling of the mellower material is beautiful, and opens up an even more deeply expressive side of her vocals than before. The Monks' approach is very hard to peg – certainly elements of garage and psych, but with a madness that really makes these guys completely unique – maybe even more so here, as they weren't trying to please any execs at a record company. The album has Lonnie playing both Fender Rhodes and organ – the former with this sweet, tight groove that's mighty nice – a bit like when Johnny Hammond or Jack McDuff touched the instrument on their own albums from the 70s – with all the chunky, funky qualities learned from their solos on the Hammond. Production is by Sonny Lester, and the groups here are relatively big, which gives a bit of a blacksploitation funk to the record – but part of the record also has a leaner group with Joe Lovano on tenor, blowing some beautifully extended solos – as well as George Benson on guitar. Lee Hazlewood is looking a bit nervous on the cover – very different than the swaggering bravado of his mustachioed fame of the late 60s – which is quite fitting, given that these tracks were all recorded very early in his career! The collection presents the debut of a set of early demo recordings by Lee – recorded in Phoenix, at a time when his flame was just starting to flicker – but with a clear songwriting genius that already points the way towards the tremendous work he'd do on his own, and for other singers! Most numbers just feature Hazlewood on vocals and guitar, with occasional extra guitar from Al Casey – but Lee's also already starting to use echo to bring out the best quality of his songs, creating all these cool and moody little corners that make the music sound very different than regular demo recordings. Titles include "Five Thousand & One", "Cross Country Blues", "Peculiar Guy", "Buying On Time", "The Country Bus Tune", "The Old Man & His Guitar", and "Fort Worth". Also includes a full early draft of the album Trouble Is A Lonely Town – ten more songs that include "Run Boy Run", "Big Joe Slade", "Georgia Chain Gang", "Six Feet Of Chain", and "Long Black Train".
