✨✧ TelevisionAdventure ... LP
Elektra, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The fantastic second album from Television – a follow up to Marquee Moon that has the group still very much at the top of their game – and which makes a perfect pairing with that legendary debut! The group may not have given us many records over their short span – but Adventure is the kind of record that most groups would have worked years to create – graced with fantastic work from Tom Verlaine, and the kind of guitar sound that opened the door for a whole new generation to explore in the years beyond punk and prog! Titles include "Glory Days", "Foxhole", "Careful", "Carried Away", "The Fire", "Ain't That Nothin", and "The Dream's Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Television PersonalitiesThey Could Have Been Bigger Than The Beatles ... CD
Fire (UK), 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
The could have been bigger than the Beatles, but sadly they never came close – and instead, Television Personalities went on to become one of those great secrets from the British scene of the post-punk years – one of those groups that folks in the know always knew, which also includes a fair bit of later groups who were influenced strongly by their genius! This third album features material recorded over a few years – as sort of a summation of the group's strengths, and also a coda – as the package pulls together unreleased recordings and different versions of previous cuts – which makes for an overstuffed package of greatness. Titles include "Three Wishes", "The Boy In The Paisley Shirt", "Flowers For Abigail", "King & Country", "Sooty's Disco Party", "Painter Man", "Anxiety Block", "The Glittering Prizes", and "Mysterious Ways". ✨✧ Pete RugoloFugitive – Original Television Series Soundtrack ... CD
Silva, 1960s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great little soundtrack from Pete Rugolo – Stan Kenton's right-hand man during the early 50s modernist years, and a hell of an arranger in his own right! Pete wrote some of the best crime jazz soundtracks of the late 50s and early 60s – and his work for television ranks up there with the best by Mancini or Nelson Riddle. This 24-track set is the first time that Rugolo's work for the original Fugitive TV show has been reissued – and it's a nice mix of crime themes, chase numbers, and mellower scene-setting tunes. Titles include "Kimble vs One Armed Man", "The One Armed Man's Name is Fred Johnson", "Theme From The Fugitive", "Tragic Homecoming", "Under Arrest", "On The Run", "Brass Interlude", "Freedom & Finale", and "Back On The Road". Jon BatisteAnatomy Of Angels – Live At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Verve, 2019. Used ... $6.99
A very different side of pianist Jon Batiste than you'll hear on television – and a record that's a great reminder of just how great a jazz musician he can be when he wants to! The set was recorded live at the Vanguard – and the songs are beautiful long-spun numbers that not only provide a perfect showcase for Jon's skills on the piano, filled with lots of soulful inflections that are really wonderful – but also display the larger Batiste vision with a group – a slightly larger ensemble here with arrangments by Jon that fill things in nicely alongside his strong voice on the keys. Rachael Price delivers a vocal performance on "The Very Thought Of You" – and other tunes include "Creative", "Dusk Train To Doha", "Round Midnight", and "Anatomy Of Angels". CD

✨✧ Elmer BernsteinThemes From General Electric Theater ... CD
Columbia/Intrada, 1959. Used ... $24.99
Really wonderful work from the great Elmer Bernstein – from a relatively unlikely source as well! The music here was all composed for the General Electric Theater TV show – a regular anthology program hosted by Ronald Reagan, with a shifting dramatic cast – but one that's scored by Bernstein with all the richness of his best film work of the time – orchestrations that are even more amazing when you consider they were only meant to be heard from the small speaker of a television, and usually just for one time only! The album brings together some of the best Bernstein compositions from a variety of different programs – but there's a surprisingly unified feel throughout, and titles include "Enchante", "Passionelle", "Lavender Waltz", "The Highland Lovers", "David's Love Song", "Progress", "Mariachi", and "L'Amour Tristesse". John CaleAcademy In Peril (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Reprise/4 Men With Beards, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $18.99 21.99
One of the coolest, most unusual albums ever from the great John Cale – a set that draws strongly on his roots in the New York underground of the mid 60s – including time spent with Tony Conrad and other experimentalists! The record is almost all instrumental – and has Cale mixing modes that include spare passages that are very evocative and contemplative, with fuller orchestral outbursts that are somewhere in the territory of his material with Terry Riley, but more freewheeling and less minimalist overall. Piano is the main instrument on many numbers, and Cale stuns us with his command of the keyboard – and the album features one striking vocal performance on the song "King Harry", alongside other titles that include "The Philosopher", "Brahms", "Legs Larry At Television Centre", "John Milton", and "Intro/Days Of Steam". ✨✧ Bob DylanTravelin Thru – Featuring Johnny Cash – Bootleg Series Vol 15 (3LPs) ... LP
Columbia/Legacy, Late 60s. New Copy 3LP ... Just Sold Out!
Rare and unheard material from Dylan's career redefining Nashville era – his post Blonde On Blonde Nashville era to be more specific – when he recorded the poetic story song masterpiece John Wesley Harding, the charming country folk classic Nashville Skyline, sessions that would end up on Self Portrait, and lots more with Johnny Cash than we'd ever thought would see light of day! Travelin' Thru has more interesting alternate versions and outtakes from John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline than we'd expect given how focused the former and how easygoing the latter are, but what's most revelatory here are the many recordings of Dylan and Cash together – from the Nashville Skyline sessions and for Johnny's Nashville-based television show at the time. Includes tracks with Carl Perkins on guitar and the great Earl Scruggs on banjo, too – with alternate versions John Wesley Harding material including "I Pity The Poor Immigrant", "All Along The Watchtower" and "I Am A Lonesome Hobo" and more, alternate Nashville Skyline takes such as "Country Pie", "Lay Lady Lay", "To Be Alone With You" and more, "I Still Miss Someone", "Ring Of Fire", "Girl From North Country", "Wanted Man" and lots more with Cash, surprisingly great folk & roots focused Self Portrait sessions including "East Virginia Blues" with Scruggs, and tons more. 50 tracks on 3LPs – most previously unreleased! Universal (France), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 20CDs & Book ... $139.99 149.99
An amazing collection of work from Serge Gainsbourg – a set that definitely lives up to the "integrale" promise in the title, as it includes every single album he ever recorded, plus loads more singles and rare bits too – all packaged in a really lavish set! Even if you've got an album or two by Serge at home – or even more than that – there's plenty here to love, as the set's overflowing with goodness – material that runs from his early work in a mixture of jazz and Latin, to his playful 60s pop, to the kind of sexy, slinky, funky sounds he's become legendary for as the 70s moved in! The album features 16 CDs of the classic original albums – nearly all of which include bonus tracks – a CD of singles & duets (1975 to 1986), a CD of television and radio recordings (1957 to 1974), a CD of songs for films, and a CD of instrumental film music – plus large book, with 48 pages of notes and images to hold the whole thing together! The original albums include Du Chant A La Une, No 2, L'Etonnant Serge Gainsbourg, No 4, Confidentiel, Gainsbourg Percussions, Initials BB, Jane Birkin E Serge Gainsbourg, Histoire De Melody Nelson, Vu De L'Exterieur, Rock Around The Bunker, L'Homme A Tete De Chou, Aux Armes Et Caetera, Mauvaises Nouvelles Des Etoiles, Love On The Beat, and You're Under Arrest. The 4 addition CD adds dozens of far reaching, Serge greatness – and the whole thing includes 271 tracks in all! Even includes exclusive tracks – such as "Parce Que", "Les Play Boys", and "J'Entends Siffler Le Train". CD

Sublime sneering work from the great Richard Hell – a key album in the evolution of punk on the US scene! The record marks a huge shift after Hell left Television – harder, nastier sounds – almost on a par with the Dead Boys on Sire, but a bit more artistic too – especially given Hell's penchant for creative wordplay. Ennio MorriconeNoi Lazzaroni (180 gram pressing) ... LP
CAM/Digitmovies (Italy), 1978. New Copy ... $34.99
Rare soundtrack work from Ennio Morricone, recorded for an Italian TV series that didn't get any play on this side of the Atlantic! The music has a surprisingly haunting quality, especially for television – almost the darker side of Morricone that you'd hear in the earlier part of the 70s, and less like some of his warmer scores of the time when this one was recorded. Edda Dell'Orso sings quite darkly on a few tracks – really bringing an edge to the music – and there's also a mix of atonal strings and lighter, lilting moments – of the sort we're much more likely to hear in some of Morricone's best cinematic endeavors. Titles include "Tema Borghese", "Tema Popolaresco", "Passione E Misticismo", "Musica Di Strada No 1", "Solo Violini", and "Notturno Senza Lunda". LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderfully wide look at the growth of American comedy in the 20th century – a book whose subject matter is definitely hinted at by the cover image! The author goes into great depth, and follows a fascinating path of the shifting venues for comedic expression – which also shift the nature of the material too – in a trajectory that's slightly related to musical development in the 20th century too! The chapter titles give a good idea of the book's pathway – and include "Vaudeville Comedians", "Radio", "Nightclubs", "Television", "The Emergence Of Las Vegas", "Stand-Up's Great Change", "First Comedy Clubs & The 1970s", "Hippie Madness At Decade's End", and "The Stand-Up Comedy Boom". Radiators From SpaceTV Tube Heart (10 inch LP) ... LP
Chiswick (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 30.99
A classic debut from The Radiators From Space – a group who were contemporaries to the first wave of British punk, but who found a special raw sound that was all their own! In a way, the sound here is almost the earlier pub rock generation spun through the noisier modes allowed by punk – especially in the way the guitars are right up front in the mix, and the vocals seem to go out of their way to show off the group's accents and attitudes. At the time, folks would have drawn a firm line between this and work by the Clash or Pistols – but all these many years later, the record stands as a wonderful document of the time – and a much-needed piece of the larger punk rock puzzle. Titles include "Television Screen", "Ripped & Torn", "Roxy Girl", "Great Expectations", "Blitzin At The Ritz", "Press Gang", "Prison Bars", and "Not Too Late". LP, Vinyl record album

An incredible document of the punk and post punk era live music scene in Chicago by Brian Shanley – a photographer and designer who shot so many iconic bands and did design work for Wax Trax Records early on – and this book of his black & whites is pretty breathtaking if you have even a passive interest in punk or Chicago live music history in general! It captures some of the earliest Chicago appearances by solo era Iggy Pop,The Ramones, Bauhaus, Pere Ubu, Patti Smith, Motorhead, The Dead Boys and so many more, pics from some of the legendary suburban Chicago gigs in Wheeling and Schaumburg by punk bands back in the day with gigs in the city proper were harder to get, shots of seminal Chicago bands like Skafish and Tutu & The Pirates around town, shots of X in their own LA stomping grounds, Television and others at their CBGBs home base – it's one amazing shot after another here. Siouxsie & The BansheesThrough The Looking Glass ... LP
Geffen, 1987. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Siouxie & The Banshees pick up songs from a well-chosen array of other artists – including Roxy Music, Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan, Television, and Billie Holiday – almost moving into that reworking-of-classics style that This Mortal Coil was using at the time – even though Siouxie's earlier work was probably a huge inspiration on that group and most of the 4AD acts to emerge during the 80s! The vibe here is similar to Tinderbox – surprisingly catchy at times, yet still with that balanced sense of drama that Siouxie could bring to her music – on tunes that include their hit remake of "The Passenger", plus "This Wheel's On Fire", "Strange Fruit", "Sea Breezes", "Little Johnny Jewel", "Hall Of Mirrors", and "Trust In Me". Later era greatness from Sonic Youth – a record we love just as much as thier first couple major label efforts, perhaps even more so! Murray Street came about after the mainstream's kinda-sorta-almost welcoming of SY, a post-90s world where they'd reached art rock elder status, and were seemingly free to follow their creative whims on big ol' Geffen Records. Jim O'Rourke was a full on band member at this point, giving that much more of a soar to the guitar sounds, which have an almost Television-like way of mixing accessible melody and freeform atmoshere. Artpop/Cherry Red (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy 6CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really great work from The Times – a group who maybe sprung up during the mod revival in the UK during the early 80s, but who also have their own very special version of wit and wisdom in their music! The short-lived group was formed by Edward Ball after time in the Television Personalities – and they've got a 60s-styled sound that mixes some of the growing Creation Records style with some of the humor of Ball's earlier group – all served up in a focus on short, tuneful songs that have the guitars in the lead in a post-Jam fashion, but which keep things nicely simple throughout! The lyrics are great – simple, but playful – often stating some of the themes of the titles, which include references to 60s mod greats, pop art, and even classic Brit TV – as heard in the group's best-known cut, "I Helped Patrick McGoohan Escape"! There's a wealth of work here that we'd never heard before – as the massive set features the full albums Go With The Times, Pop Goes Art, This Is London, Hello Europe, Enjoy, and the Up Against It soundtrack – plus 63 bonus tracks from singles, compilations, and other unusual sources. Peter has a distinctive voice and offbeat lyrical sensibility that feels a lot more akin to the arty fringe of the major labels in the early 80s than it does to 1974 or 1976, he's really a pioneer. It's no surprise at all that he'd end up being the host of LA television's legendary music program New Wave Theatre in the early 80s, but it's surprising he doesn't get more credit these days for influencing the kind thing that'd come to be called "new wave" years after his contributing work!
