TelevisionMarquee Moon ... CD
Elektra, 1977. Used ... $6.99
The masterful debut of Television! Marquee Moon is indisputably one of best records to come out of late 70s NYC . It's truly a singular achievement – one of the few records that seems to be on every rock literati's list of the all-time-bests – and actually deserves every bit of praise it gets! The guitars and vocals are bristling with all the post-punk energy of the lower east side in the 70s – but stands out for the off kilter melodicism and the extraordinary guitar heroism, courtesy Tom Verlaine. A genuine classic! Includes "See No Evil", "Venus", "Friction", "Marquee Moon", "Elevation", "Guiding Light", "Prove It" and "Torn Curtain". CD

The fantastic second album from Television – a follow up to Marquee Moon that has the group still very much at the top of their game – and which makes a perfect pairing with that legendary debut! The group may not have given us many records over their short span – but Adventure is the kind of record that most groups would have worked years to create – graced with fantastic work from Tom Verlaine, and the kind of guitar sound that opened the door for a whole new generation to explore in the years beyond punk and prog! VariousMusic Used In Many Popular Television Commercials ... CD
Bosworth/Folkways, 1974. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A haunting batch of commercial music from the 70s – billed in the notes to Bosworth Ensembles, which makes us almost think that the work's from the Bosworth Sound Library – even though the record was issued in the US by Folkways! Most of the music here is relatively gentle – seductive 70s themes played on piano, keyboards, guitar, and other light instrumentation – the kind of tunes that must have been beautiful slinking behind the products featured in the TV ads – which include Zenith TVs, Buick station wagons, Dannon yogurt, and Revlon perfumes! Composers are listed as T Kinsey, J Pearson, V Flick, B Ebbinghouse, and K Palmer – all names that might be Brit Easy composers – and titles include "Guitarama", "Walking On Velvet", "Theme For Two Lovers", "Pastorella", "Fleeting Clouds", "Devil's Delight", "Apollo 15", and "Slow Glow". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

John Barry/Elizabeth TaylorElizabeth Taylor In London ... LP
Colpix, 1963. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A weird little record from John Barry – the soundtrack to a 1963 television special recorded by Elizabeth Taylor at the height of her early popularity, and featuring Taylor reciting a variety of poems and speeches over music by Barry! There's a relatively high concept feel to the album – as Barry's backings are fairly string-laden and serious, penned to match the mood of Taylor's presentation of material written by William Wordsworth, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, William Pitt, Winston Churchill, and Queen Victoria. And although Taylor speaks on about half the record, the best tracks here are actually the instrumental ones – which have more of the depth of Barry's serious soundtrack work from the time, and manage to have their own sense of presence apart from the star quality of Liz on the set. Arrangements are by Johnnie Spence, and titles include "Elizabeth", "London Theme Jazz Waltz", "Queen Elizabeth At Tilbury", "Queen Victoria", "English Garden", "The Fire Of London", "Lovers & Browning", and "London At Dawn". LP, Vinyl record album
(Gold label stereo pressing. Cover has some surface wear and aging.)

John CaleAcademy In Peril (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Reprise/4 Men With Beards, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $18.99 21.99
One of the coolest, most unusual albums ever from the great John Cale – a set that draws strongly on his roots in the New York underground of the mid 60s – including time spent with Tony Conrad and other experimentalists! The record is almost all instrumental – and has Cale mixing modes that include spare passages that are very evocative and contemplative, with fuller orchestral outbursts that are somewhere in the territory of his material with Terry Riley, but more freewheeling and less minimalist overall. Piano is the main instrument on many numbers, and Cale stuns us with his command of the keyboard – and the album features one striking vocal performance on the song "King Harry", alongside other titles that include "The Philosopher", "Brahms", "Legs Larry At Television Centre", "John Milton", and "Intro/Days Of Steam". Daniela CasaSovrapposizione Di Immagini ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $24.99
Hypnotic sound library material from Italian composer Daniela Casa – some of her rarest work from the mid 70s – recorded in her home studio and never before released commercially! It's very compelling work, with a range of styles from minimalist soundtrack music, to fairly heavy psych, to sitar-driven strings, to airy flute pieces and beyond. It was recorded for use in radio, television and film, but it honestly works just as well as melodic, if experimental instrumentals that masterfully blends and straddles genres. Titles include "Ricerca Dela Materia", "Pericolo", "Dimensione Concreta", "Grosse Cilindrate", "Avventura", "Visione Surreale", Occultismo", "Fantasia", "Motocross", "Dimensione Astrata", Ugnoto", "Circo Del Bimbi", "Sovrapposizione Di Immagini" and more. Serge GainsbourgIntegrale (limited edition 20CD box set plus 48-page book) ... CD
Universal (France), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 20CDs & Book ... $149.99
An amazing collection of work from Serge Gainsbourg – a set that definitely lives up to the "integrale" promise in the title, as it includes every single album he ever recorded, plus loads more singles and rare bits too – all packaged in a really lavish set! Even if you've got an album or two by Serge at home – or even more than that – there's plenty here to love, as the set's overflowing with goodness – material that runs from his early work in a mixture of jazz and Latin, to his playful 60s pop, to the kind of sexy, slinky, funky sounds he's become legendary for as the 70s moved in! The album features 16 CDs of the classic original albums – nearly all of which include bonus tracks – a CD of singles & duets (1975 to 1986), a CD of television and radio recordings (1957 to 1974), a CD of songs for films, and a CD of instrumental film music – plus large book, with 48 pages of notes and images to hold the whole thing together! The original albums include Du Chant A La Une, No 2, L'Etonnant Serge Gainsbourg, No 4, Confidentiel, Gainsbourg Percussions, Initials BB, Jane Birkin E Serge Gainsbourg, Histoire De Melody Nelson, Vu De L'Exterieur, Rock Around The Bunker, L'Homme A Tete De Chou, Aux Armes Et Caetera, Mauvaises Nouvelles Des Etoiles, Love On The Beat, and You're Under Arrest. The 4 addition CD adds dozens of far reaching, Serge greatness – and the whole thing includes 271 tracks in all! Even includes exclusive tracks – such as "Parce Que", "Les Play Boys", and "J'Entends Siffler Le Train". CD

Dave Grusin/Teddy RandazzoGirl From UNCLE ... LP
MGM, 1966. Sealed Gatefold ... $29.99
One of the greatest spy soundtracks of the 60s – a very groovy batch of tracks written for Stefanie Powers' brief TV show, The Girl From UNCLE! The music here is better than the male version of the UNCLE franchise – hip 60s spy themes, done in a groovy style for the television audience – often a cool blend of swirling strings, jazzy orchestrations, and some very hip rhythms! Dave Grusin penned the music, and Teddy Randazzo arranged – bringing his 60s soul background into the work in a really great way – emphasizing the grooves even more than on other records of this nature, in a way that's made the set very sought after in the crate-digging scene. There's plenty of nice 60s elements – keyboards, wordless vocals, funky flute, and other hip effects – and titles include "Movin On", "Out Of The Frying Pan", "The Girl From UNCLE", "Sneaky Search", "The Countess", and "Bomb Scare". LP, Vinyl record album

Peter IversComplete Warner Bros Recordings (Terminal Love/Peter Ivers/Nirvana Peter) ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 19.99
Peter Ivers's entire output for Warner Brothers in the mid 70s – including the original LPs Terminal Love & Peter Ivers, plus the Nirvana Peter compilation, which didn't appear until the mid 80s and STILL sounded ahead of its time – in a complete 2CD set! Peter has a distinctive voice and offbeat lyrical sensibility that feels a lot more akin to the arty fringe of the major labels in the early 80s than it does to 1974 or 1976, he's really a pioneer. It's no surprise at all that he'd end up being the host of LA television's legendary music program New Wave Theatre in the early 80s, but it's surprising he doesn't get more credit these days for influencing the kind thing that'd come to be called "new wave" years after his contributing work! Disc 1 includes the Terminal Love and Peter Ivers LPs, with "Alpha Centauri", "OO Girl", "Modern Times", "Holding The Cobra", "Even Stephen Foster", 'Audience Of One", "I'm Sorry Alice", "Eighteen And Dreaming", "Peter", "Rock And Roll Embarrassment", "Child In A Chair" and more. Disc 2 (the Nirvana Peter comp) features a few tracks from his 2 proper LPs and rarities. The 2CDs have 33 tracks in all. CD

Bruno NicolaiGeminus ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... $29.99
Bruno Nicolai is at the top of his game here – really working magic for the soundtrack to this extended late 60s mini-series for Italian television! The music sums up all the best Nicolai modes of the time – some of those Morricone-like moments of mellow groove, mixed with starker striking sounds, balanced by some especially catchy jazz elements that really make the whole thing sparkle – in ways that are almost a more serious presentation of ideas that Bruno brought to sexier comedies! Vibes, organ, and guitar all figure in nicely at certain points – and the soundtrack's awash in very cool tunes – including a few lyrical numbers near the end. Titles include "Tema Barocco", "Teorema", "Larve", "Le Voice", "Sogno", "Catacombe", "Notti Romane", and "Avventure Notturne". LP, Vinyl record album

Radiators From SpaceTV Tube Heart (10 inch LP) ... LP
Chiswick (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 30.99
A classic debut from The Radiators From Space – a group who were contemporaries to the first wave of British punk, but who found a special raw sound that was all their own! In a way, the sound here is almost the earlier pub rock generation spun through the noisier modes allowed by punk – especially in the way the guitars are right up front in the mix, and the vocals seem to go out of their way to show off the group's accents and attitudes. At the time, folks would have drawn a firm line between this and work by the Clash or Pistols – but all these many years later, the record stands as a wonderful document of the time – and a much-needed piece of the larger punk rock puzzle. Titles include "Television Screen", "Ripped & Torn", "Roxy Girl", "Great Expectations", "Blitzin At The Ritz", "Press Gang", "Prison Bars", and "Not Too Late". LP, Vinyl record album

Groovy psychedelic rock from Brazil – the self-titled effort from Ronnie Von – a Brazilian television personality and musician who stayed incredibly busy from late 60s through the 70s – but recorded few albums as sublime as this album from 1968! The set's really a near-perfect batch of sunshine rock – sung in Portuguese and featuring some of the similar freeform sounds of his Brazilian contemporaries of the time – with groovy western touches in the instrumentation. Ronnie's vocals are backed up by organ washes and piano, buzzing guitars and walloping drums – but the overall feel is quite melodic – wonderful blend of California sunshine and Brazilian rock grooves! A seminal album in Jamaican music from Lord Tanamo – a singer with roots in calypso, but a sound that really paves the way for ska and rocksteady to come! The record's a full length set from the Gaydisc label of important early producer Sonia Pottinger – and like some of Pottinger's other productions, there's a really open criss-crossing of modes – familiar calypso rhythms, but topped with horn parts that are more ska-based overall – which also really shifts the music in spirit, and even makes Tanamo's sound here different than other of the hipper singers in his style on other islands at the time. Titles include "Band Passing", "Iron Bar", "Naughty Little Flea", "Television", "Land Of The Sea & Sun", "Festival Jump Up", and "Take Me Back To Jamaica". 2CD set is overflowing with bonus material – 40 more tracks in all!
