✨✧ Reparata & The DelronsWhenever A Teenager Cries ... LP
World Artists, Mid 60s. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest girl groups of the 60s – a fab trio who hailed from Brooklyn, and who worked in the best sweet styles of both soul and rock groups of the time! Reparata & The Delrons have a sound that's a real cut above the usual – a way of handling a tune that's free of some of the cliches of other groups from the period, but which also does a good job of bringing out their best elements too. It's hard to sum up just why the group's so great – but it's possibly because they were working at the end of the girl group era, and have a bit more of a depth to their work – a style that's also influenced a bit by harmony folk and Sunshine Pop, but which is stil unabashedly focused on shorter tunes with groovy hooks. LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing.)

✨✧ MF Doom & Bishop NehruNehruviandoom – Redux (picture disc) ... LP
Lex, New Copy ... On May 7, 2021
solid, and the time underappreciated effort from Bishop Nehru and MF Doom – one we appreciate even more with bit of time on its side! Doom is more or less focused on the production side on this one while the former handles the majority of the rhymes – and having arrived at a time when Doom's mic and stage presence were probably a bit more famous (or infamous, depending on when & where you might've seen him live) than his playful, moody and oddly melodic production genius, it was a reminder how great he could be – and Bishop Nehru is more than up to task of shining strong as the primary lyricist despite still being a teenager when this was made! Good stuff, and like most of Doom's productions, pretty timeless. Includes "First Day Of Class", "Om", "Mean The Most", "So Alone", "Darkness (HBU)", "Coming For You", Caskets", "Great Things" and "Disastrous". LP, Vinyl record album

Junko Onishi Presents The SextetUnity All – Live At Pit Inn (3CD set) ... CD
Somethin Cool (Japan), 2020. New Copy 3CD ... $59.99
A searing live set from this larger group headed up by pianist Junko Onishi – actually more than a sextet for this date, given the appearance of a few other players in the concert! Onishi sounds more vibrant than we've heard in years – not just a really dynamic leader, but also playing with lots of dark, chunky tones – almost avant at moments, alongside a lineup that includes Akihiro Yoshimoto on tenor and flute, Miki Hiros on trumpet, Yuzo Kataoka on trombone, Yosuke Inoue on bass, Shinnosuke Takahshi on drums – and work from Satoshi Yoshida on guitar, David Negrete on alto, and vocals from Wornell Jones. This beautiful 3CD set features a great book-like package, with a CD each for three different dates of performance – and titles that include "Unity 2", "Rain In March","Kind", "Head Towards The Light", "Falling Rocks", "Dark Chime", "Two Laps Behind", "Cura Da Gatos", "Teenager", and "Alert 5". J Frank Wilson & The CavaliersLast Kiss – The Definitive Collection ... CD
Cicadelic, 1964. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The first-ever set to fully plumb the talents of J Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers – a 60s Texas group who are best-remembered for their classic "Last Kiss" hit, but who've got plenty more to offer here! There's an echoey brilliance to most of these numbers that really stands out – a stark, spare, simple approach to pop that shows why the hinterlands of the US scene were often some of the hippest places to look for new music back in the day. Wilson's heartfelt vocals really come across with a tremendous sense of sadness here – spun out with very spacious sound in the studio, and backed by a beautifully blue blend of electric guitar, organ, and saxophone. A number of the masters here have never been heard since the 60s – and the CD features a whopping 25 tracks that include "Last Kiss", "Sea Of Love", "Teenager In Love", "Summertime", "Hey Little One", "Too Many Girls", "He'll Learn About Her", "A Kiss", "Hopeless Love", "Wine Wine Wine", "Funky Mama", "Not This Time", and "Speak To Me". VariousLaurie Records Story Vol 3 – Girls & Girl Groups ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Great girl group grooves from Laurie Records – one of the powerhouses of the genre during the 60s! The set brings together some of the best that Laurie had to offer at the time – not just hits, but some great lesser-known gems that really make the package stand out from other girl group sets on the market – a wonderful collection of both rock and soul cuts that show there's still plenty left to discover if you know where to dig! Tracks are pulled not just from the main Laurie label, but also from other imprints too – including the Rust, Providence, and Harmon labels – and as usual, Ace has done a bang-up job with the notes and images – helping us learn plenty about the music while our ears are enjoying the sounds. Titles include "Hanky Panky" by The Summits, "Shy Guy" by The Charmers, "You're The Love Of My Life" by Brenda Lee Jones, "Stop Look & Listen" by The Chiffons, "He's Mine" by Linda & The Lindettes, "Your Big Mistake" by The Del-Rons, "I Still Love You" by Les Girls, "He's My Dream Boy" by Marie Antoinette, "How Can I Be Sure" by Gloria Dennis, "Circus Girl" by Bernadette Carroll, "Whenever A Teenager Cries" by The Jeans, "Nothing Went Right" by Lorrie Darnell, and "Your Life Is Gone" by Reparata. ✨✧ FleetwoodsDeep In A Dream ... LP
Dolton, Early 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Haunting vocal work from The Fleetwoods – still as dreamy as ever, despite the fact that Gary Troxel, the male member of the group, was currently serving time aboard a Navy destroyer! In fact, this odd twist of fate (which was accommodated by having the group record when Gary came home on leave) is even dealt with on the cover – which has a photo montage of Naval-clad Gary reclining with a "dream" image of his two gal group-mates back in America! The tunes are incredibly sweet – and the vocals have this complexity that you might not expect if you only know The Fleetwoods' bigger hits. Titles include "Hey Little Tear", "Lavender Blue", "Lonely Cup Of Coffee", "Daddy's Home", "A Teenager In Love", "Blues Go Away", and "One Little Star". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sun Ra & OthersInterplanetary Melodies – Doo Wop From Saturn & Beyond Vol 1 ... LP
Norton, Mid 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Doo wop era spaceways travel from Sun Ra and soulful mid 50s vocal recruits – including The Cosmic Rays, Crystals, Nu Sounds and Juanita Rogers – a motherlode of rarities and never before issued recordings! Interplanetary Melodies includes doo wop numbers of earthly concern, and space theme tunes, and it's jaw dropping that such top notch recordings were still deep down there in the vaults after the excellent earlier era Ra collections from the Atavistic and Evidence labels – and Norton's efforts here are just as wonderful! The vocals are excellent, with some straighter songs, that could have been huge hits numbers with some sweetness and soaring qualities – particularly the Cosmic Rays tunes, but others are more playful, spacey, with odder lyricism and rawer performances. Soulful harmonies or strange mannerisms, rollicking piano or eerie harmonium, it's fantastic stuff and essential early Sun Ra! Most tunes are culled from unreleased studio or home recordings from the vaults, plus a couple rare releases on Saturn and Pink Clouds, and titles include "Daddy's Gonna Tell You No Lie", "Bye Bye", "Somebody's In Love" (unissued home rehearsal) and more with Cosmic Rays, "Honey In The Bee Box" (unissued home rehearsal) with The Crystals, "Spaceship Lullaby" (unissued home rehearsal) and "I'm Through With You" (unissued home rehearsal) with Nu Sounds, "It's Christmas Time" by Qualities, "Teenager's Letter Of Promises" with Juanita Rogers and Lynn Hollings, "Tony's Wife" by Sun Ra and more. ✨✧ Lee DorseyRide Your Pony – Get Out Of My Life Woman (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Amy/Rev-Ola (UK), Mid/Late 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning album of raw New Orleans soul – recorded by the great Lee Dorsey, with production by Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn! The record falls in the same camp as The Meters – and although Dorsey's work has vocals, the choppy instrumental backing is pure Crescent City all the way – even though the cover art oddly features a bunch of teenagers in New York City! Titles include the monster funky break track "Get Out Of My Life Woman", the wonderfully funky "Ride Your Pony", plus loads of other nice ones like "The Kitty Cat Song", "So Long", "Work Work Work", "Shortnin Bread", "Can You Hear Me", and "People I Wish You Could See". CD features an additional 11 bonus tracks here, including "I Can't Get Away", "Go-Go Girl", "O Can Hear You Callin'", "Take Care Of Our Love", "Cynthia", "Four Corners" (Parts 1 & 2) and more. CD
(Out of print – with great bonus tracks!)
