✨✧ Coleman HawkinsHigh & Mighty Hawk ... LP
Felsted, 1958. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A near-forgotten gem from Coleman Hawkins excellent late 50s period – recorded for the short-lived Felsted label, and done in a beautifully relaxed way! The tracks here are long and easy-going – at times even more open than Hawkins' work for Verve, and in the style he'd explore even more deeply for Prestige on some albums recorded right after this set. Hawk is playing in a quintet with Buck Clayton on trumpet, Hank Jones on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Mickey Sheen on drums – and titles include "My One & Only Love", "Bird Of Prey Blues", "Get Set", "Ooh Wee Miss GP", "Vignette" and "You've Changed". Fantastic work from the great Coleman Hawkins – seminal Keynote Records material from the pre-bop years! Some tracks feature Hawkins on tenor with Charlie Shavers on trumpet and Teddy Wilson on piano – and others feature Hawkins in a group with Herman Chittison on piano, Joe Thomas on trumpet, and Jack Teagarden on trombone! Hawkins also leads his own All American Five for all of side one – a group with Buck Clayton on trumpet, Teddy Wilson on piano, Slam Stewart on bass, and Denzil Best on drums. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Edwin Hawkins SingersNew World ... LP
Buddah, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Great stuff from Edwin Hawkins – as much of a soul album as it is a gospel set – but that's no surprise, given how important the Hawkins sound was to skirting both genres! The album was arranged and conducted by Johnny Harris – who gives it a great undercurrent of grooviness that mixes perfectly with the righteous Hawkins style of vocals. And in a way, the album's almost the best of Hawkins' recordings from the time – as it moves past the cliches of his hits, and into a cool groove that almost has a Donny Hathaway feel at times. Titles include "Some Kind Of Friend", "Jubilation", "You Can't Please Everybody", "Precious Memories", "New World", "Do My Thing", "Someday", and "Do It Today". LP, Vinyl record album

Mike FinniganMike Finnigan (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Warner/Big Pink (South Korea), 1976. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A pretty great debut from Mike Finnigan – recorded after quite a long early journey in music, which included time in Jerry Hahn's Brotherhood group in San Francisco, and work with both Dave Mason and Jimi Hendrix – and countless other sessions that really helped him sharpen his chops before stepping out as a solo act! The record was mostly done down in Muscle Shoals, with production from Jerry Wexler – and the whole thing's got the strong currents of soulful influences you might expect – really augmented by help from Roger Hawkins on drums, Barry Beckett on keyboards, and even a bit of work from the Muscle Shoals horns! Mike's got some of the roots rock elements you'd guess from his look on the cover, but is also tightening things up in a great way too – on titles that include "Saved By The Grace Of Your Love", "Southern Lady", "Mississippi On My Mind", "Misery Loves Company", "Everything Will Work Out Right", and "The Room Nobody Lives In". Fitz Gore & The TalismenSoundinitia ... LP
Gorbra (Germany), 1975. Sealed ... $16.99
The rare debut of tenorist Fitz Gore – a player born in Jamaica, but one who didn't get his chance to shine in the spotlight until moving overseas – where he started his own small label in Germany! The set's a live one – and has Fitz stretching out with a very deep tenor sound, one that almost sounds like a baritone at points – with a richness that almost feels as if Coleman Hawkins was stepping into spiritual jazz modes in the 70s – especially given the way that Gore can swing inside and out within a single tune! Other players include Ulrich Kurth on piano, Gerard Ebbo on bass, Philippe Zodba Quitman on drums, and Lamont Hampton on congas – a group who are nice and loose, and who really open the door to let Fitz do all these amazing things on his tenor – odd inflections, very unique phrasing, and other elements that can transform even familiar tunes. Titles include "Song For My Father", "Mariella Amor", "Dahomey Dance", and "My Foolish Heart". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Billie HolidayEssential Billie Holiday Carnegie Hall Concert (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1956. Used Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A very unusual concert from Billie Holiday – one that features narration by Gilbert Millstein, telling the story of Billie's life! The format is quite unusual – almost a live documentary, with the subject of the documentary there in person herself! Millstein narrates from the start, and Billie emerges with songs throughout – using Millstein's narration to bracket portions of her career, then delivering the tunes associated with that portion. Backing is by an all-hip group that includes Coleman Hawkins, Kenny Burrell, Chico Hamilton, Roy Eldridge, and Buck Clayton – and titles include "I Cried For You", "My Man", "Don't Explain", "Lady Sings The Blues", "Body & Soul", "I Love My Man", and "Yesterdays". Isley Brothers & OthersIsley Brothers Live At Yankee Stadium ... LP
T Neck, 1969. Very Good- 2LP ... $7.99
A great little double-length live set – one that not only features some searing material from the Isley Brothers at their funky best, but also work from some very hip related groups too – all coming together in a real all-star package! The Isleys sing some killer versions of their funky 45s – including "I Turned You On", "It's Your Thing", and "I Know Who You Been Socking It To" – and they then turn out a seven minute romp of their classic "Shout". The set then moves on to a full side of work from the Edwin Hawkins Singers – who deliver an eight minute version of "Oh Happy Day", and a seven minute take on "Joy Joy" – then moves into a full side of work by The Brooklyn Bridge, who perform a whole set of Curtis Mayfield tracks as a medley. The last side features a side each of work from other groups – as The Five Stairsteps deliver their great version of the Curtis Mayfield tune "Don't Change Your Love" – alongside "Love Is What You Make It" by The Sweet Cherries, and "Somebody's Been Messin" by Judy White – both of which were penned by The Isley Brothers. ✨✧ Jill Scott & OthersCollaborations ... CD
Hidden Beach, 2007. Used 2 CDs ... $1.99
Jill Scott's a singer with a mighty generous spirit – and in addition to her own (all too few) recordings over the years, she's made some tremendous appearances on records under the leadership of other artists – a good deal of which are included in this set! Jill's not the kind of singer to just sleepwalk into the studio and deliver a few standard vocals when making a guest shot – and instead, she brings a new sense of life and energy to each different appearance in the set – coming across with a street-heavy vibe one minute, a more laidback cosmic mode the next, and a more classically-tuned soul sound at still another point. The set's a great illustration of the depths of Scott's rich talents – and even though we'd rather have Jill spending more time in the studio recording her own music, we're still plenty happy to have so many of her great guest appearances together in one package like this! CD features 14 tracks in all – including "Love Rain" with Mos Def, presented in "head nod" and "coffee shop" remixes – plus "Said Enough" with The Isley Brothers, "One Time" with Eric Roberson, "Good Morning Heartache" with Chris Botti, "Daydreamin" with Lupe Fiasco, "Let Me" with Sergio Mendes & Will I Am, "8 Minutes To Sunrise" with Common, "Sometime I Wonder" with Darius Rucker, "Slide" with Jeff Bradshaw, "The Rain" with Will Smith, and "God Bless The Child" with Al Jarreau & George Benson. CD
(Also features a bonus CD – with material by Hidden Beach artists who include Jill Scott, Keite, Jeff Bradshaw, Peter Black, Sunny Hawkins, and Onitsha.)

Randy WestonRandy Weston – Mosaic Select (Piano A La Mode/Little Miles/Live At The Five Spot/Unissued Session/Uhuru Afrika/Highlife) ... CD
Mosaic/United Artists/Roulette, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... $49.99 59.99
Some of the most important work ever recorded by Randy Weston – 5 early albums that really pushed the boundaries of modern jazz! First up on the set is Little Niles – a fantastic set that features some of Weston's best early compositions – angular and Monk-ish numbers, but with a profound influence from African rhythms. Next up is Live At The Five Spot – a really compelling live set that features Randy working out Little Niles-ish numbers with a live group that includes Kenny Dorham and Coleman Hawkins. After that is Piano A La Mode – a sublimely simple album of mellow piano tracks – followed by a series of previously unissued tracks done with a quartet that includes Roy Haynes, Cecil Payne, and Ron Carter. Following that are some of Randy's most Afro-centric albums – very unique for the time, and equally powerful today – the records Uhuru Afrika and Highlife – both of which feature larger groups working through some distinctly African ideas in jazz. Nearly every record features arrangements by Melba Liston – and if you've ever wondered where to start with Randy, this is it – because the set encapsulates nearly all of the biggest contributions he ever made to jazz! 40 titles in all – with tunes that include "Little Niles", "Nice Ice", "Earth Birth", "Gingerbread", "Saucer Eyes", "204", "CB Blues", "Where", "Fe Double U Blues", "African Lady", "Bantu", "Kucheza Blues", "Blues To Africa", and "Congolese Children". VariousClassic Jazz At The Philharmonic Jam Sessions 1950 to 1957 (10CD set) ... CD
Verve/Mosaic, 1950s. New Copy 10CD ... $168.99 169.00
A much-needed collection of the famous Jazz At The Philharmonic performances of the 1950s – work that follows up the initial postwar run from producer/presenter Norman Granz, which helped lay the groundwork for Verve Records – but which hasn't gotten the full exposure it deserves! Unlike the 40s sessions, there's a lot of material here that never made it to CD – including tracks from the multi-record box set releases that included JATP volumes 11, 15, 16, and 17 – plus the Jazz Concert #1 album, Jazz At The Hollywood Bowl, and various Opera House sessions – and even the Lester Young Carnegie Blues record, which appeared later on vinyl! Some unreleased tracks have been added to the set too – and as with Mosaic Records at its best, this is less a reissue package than a proper presentation of material that was scattered out there in various formats – finally presented in the right order, with detailed notes, and really great sound. Artists are the cream of the crop of Verve at the time – Stan Getz, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge, Herb Ellis, Buddy DeFranco, Sonny Stitt, Benny Carter, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa, and others – plus some non-Verve artist surprises as well! Very limited, and comes with a huge booklet of notes and performance details too. CD

Nascente (UK), 1950s/1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/Early 2000s. Used 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really great introduction to gospel work – especially for the uninitiated – as the 3CD set is broken into 3 chapters, each per disc: Gospel Roots, Soul Gospel, and Modern Gospel! Gospel Roots features classic recordings from the 50s through the 70s – including a number of tracks that crossed over to mainstream audiences, plus others that represent the real formative sound of gospel in the US. Soul Gospel is a really great one – as it features some gospel work by mainstream soul artists, plus a really good sampling of 70s work by artists that are gospel-based, but working in a sound that was clearly influenced by mainstream funk and soul. The last disc of Modern Gospel is still pretty great – and there's a few tracks that have a surprising crossover appeal. 36 tracks in all – with titles that include "When The Gate Swings Open" by Otis Clay, "Courage Lord" by Inez Andrews, "I Feel Good" by Shirley Caesar, "He Never Lost A Battle" by Sensational Harmonizers, "I'll Make It" by Dorothy Love Coates, "Oh Happy Day" by Edwin Hawkins, "Jordan River" by The Consolers, "I Looked Down The Line" by Dixie Hummingbirds, "Optimistic" by Sounds Of Blackness, and "Lift Up Jesus" by Rizen. ✨✧ Cher3614 Jackson Highway (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atco/Wounded Bird, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We're not normally ones to stock a Cher album, but this one's pretty darn hip – recorded in at Muscle Shoals Sound, the studio referenced in the title of the album, and presented in a wonderful cover image that has Cher standing outside the tiny facility with a host of legendary studio players that include Eddie Hinton, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Beckett, and Roger Hawkins! Sonny's also standing in the crowd in the photo, but he's as in the background as he is on this set – as Cher's singing alone in a soul-styled mode that's befits the setting of the album. Titles include a funky take on "I Walk On Guilded Splinters", plus "For What It's Worth", "Cry Like A Baby", "Save The Children", "Do Right Woman", and "Dock Of The Bay". Plus, the CD features a huge amount of bonus tracks – 11 more numbers from a whole second Muscle Shoals album, but which was never issued – with titles that include "Momma Look Sharp", "Chastity's Song", "It Gets Me Where I Want To Go", "Easy To Be Hard", "I Believe", "You've Made Me So Very Happy", and "The First Time". ✨✧ Archie SheppDeja Vu (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Venus (Japan), 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful ballads from Archie Shepp – one of his later dates for Venus Records, recorded with a soulful, subtle sound that's totally great! The Shepp heard here is hardly the freewheeling player of 60s avant years – and is instead an aging master of the tenor who manages to draw on years of experience, and bring them into play with simple touches that are totally great! Most tunes here are taken at a relaxed pace – with rhythm from Harold Mabern on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Billy Drummond on drums – but Shepp blows with this offbeat sensibility that's really wonderful, a bit like some of the understated genius Coleman Hawkins brought to records like this during his own later years. The album's drenched in soul, and recorded with really beautiful sound – and titles include "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Deja Vu", "April In Paris", "Sous Le Ciel De Paris", and "L'Ame Des Poetes". Ace/Big Beat (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Planet Mod is a pretty groovy place – a spot in the solar system where rock, blues, and soul effortlessly blend together – thanks to the mighty talents of the legendary producer Shel Talmy! The set here is a great dip into the farther reaches of Talmy's records of the 60s – way past the hits, to show the kind of magic that really made the studio genius such a key force in developing the sound of London at the time – often with a fair bit of influence from America, but in a way that was already shifting into fresh British modes for the new audiences overseas. As always with Ace, the package and presentation are stunning – and the set even features some rare tracks that truly come from the vaults, mixed with other obscure singles, and supported with a great deal of notes. 24 tracks in all – and titles include "Mai Lee" by John Lee Hooker, "Don't Let It Be" by The Tribe, "Goodbye Girl" by The Preachers, "Goodbye So Long" by The Soul Brothers, "Broken Truth" by A Wild Uncertainty, "Life's Too Good To Waste" by Tony Christie & The Trackers, "Stone Crazy" by Screamin Jay Hawkins, "Too Much Of A Woman" by The Corduroys, "Have You Ever Had The Blues (alt take)" by Ray Gates, "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" by John Lee's Groundhogs, "Unto Us (demo version)" by The New Breed, and "Think" by The Total. Kent/Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
They call it Lowrider Soul on the west coast – and back east, it's maybe known more as sweet soul, or harmony soul – especially given that there's so many groups who are important to the sound! But whatever you want to call it, think of the work here as the perfect sort of slow-stepping, mellow moving soul cuts that sound even better when the lights go down – not because they're sleepy, but because the burning energy of the groups seems to work a very special sort of magic after dark! The collection is wonderful – every bit as sublime as the great first entry in this series – and it's full of the kind of laidback group soul tunes that never get old, presented here with superb sound and a great set of notes. Titles include "What Am I Going To Do" by Houston Outlaws, "A Man That Is Not Free" by Soul Sensations, "You Can't Blame Me" by Johnson Hawkins Tatu & Durr, "Trust In Me" by The Magicians, "That's The Way Our Love Is" by The Radiations, "My Sweet Baby" by The Mark-Keys, "Don't Take Your Love From Me" by The Perfections, "Here It Comes" by The Persians, "It Hurts So Much" by The Superbs, "Can't Nobody" by Brothers Of Soul, "Somebody Please" by The Vanguards, "Sad Sad Story" by The Ethics, and "Someone" by The Lovers". Numero, Late 70s/2009. Very Good+ 2LP & Book ... Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the most beautiful record we've ever seen from the folks at The Numero Group – and that's saying a lot, given the quality of all their top-shelf releases! This beautiful edition features a hardcover book of vintage black and white photographs taken on Chicago's south side in the mid 70s – images of patrons and proprietors from long-lost nite spots that include Perv's House, Pepper's Hideout, The High Chaparral, and The Showcase Lounge – all the kind of clubs that were likely to feature the sort of Chicago funk and soul that Numero's been reissuing for the past few years! The images are amazing – a really rare look into the community that supported this sort of music – caught far far from the mainstream, in placed that were almost even private, compared to more well-travelled entertainment outlets. Photographs come from the collection of Michael Abramson – and are beautifully reproduced on LP-sized pages, in a book that also features some vintage flyers, posters, and business cards from the clubs! And if that's not enough, Numero also throws in some great notes of their own, and a bonus 2LP set with music that includes "I'm A Streaker Baby" by Arelean Brown, "No Better Time Than Now" by Ricky Allen, "The Same One" by Malcolm Simmons, "You Made Me Suffer" by Andrew Brown, "This Is My Prayer" by Lady Margo, "It's A Dream" by Little Ed & The Soundmasters Band, "I Sayed That" by Slim Willis Band, "Bring It Down Front" by Hugh Hawkins, "Womans Lib" by Lucille Spann, "Gimmie Some Of Yours" by Artie White, "Baby" by Walter Butterball Davis, "Is It Because I'm Black (inst)" by Syl Johnson, "Goose Walk" by Little Mack, "Young Blood" by Detroit Jr, "California Lady" by James Kinds & Stack, and "I Learned My Lesson" by Willie Davis. The albums are packaged in their own Numero-like cover – then nestled in a slipcover with the book – a hell of a sweet set at this price, and it also comes with an introduction by Nick Hornby! Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fab collection of novelty numbers from the late 50s and early 60s – all recorded during the glory days of the monster rock and roll trend! There's a tone here set by Bobby Pickett's classic "Monster Mash", but which goes way past the obvious to include a great range of lesser-known numbers – many recorded for tiny indies of the period, and done with some madly echoing production and ultra-spooky sound effects. Rock and roll is the dominant genre, but there's also some nice entries from the jazz and R&B sides of the spectrum too – brought together in a brilliant 28 track package that blows away any other horror-based set we've seen on the market! All legit, and presented with great notes on the music – and titles that include "Rockin In The Graveyard" by Jackie Morningstar, "Feast Of Mau Mau" by Screamin Jay Hawkins, "Screamin Ball" by The Duponts, "Drac's Back" by Billy DeMarco, "Midnight Stroll" by The Revels, "I'm The Wolfman" by Round Robin, "Monster Party" by Bill Doggett, "Mr Werewolf" by The Kac-Ties, "My Son The Vampire" by Allan Sherman, "Nightmare Mash" by Billy Lee Riley, and "Frankenstein's Party" by The Swingin Phillies. Fantastic soundtrack work for the Stranger Things series from Netflix – a narrative set in the early 80s, and scored here with a sound that really gets that era right! This isn't schlocky 80s keyboard work, nor some sort of easy retro motif – and instead, the team of Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein go for sort of the coolest moods and styles that were being used in film scores during the time – especially the spare keyboards and careful electronics that were just right for a sci-fi or sophisticated horror story! The keyboards all feel very vintage, but not in an "easy" way – and titles on this first volume include "Lay Z Boy", "Nancy & Barb", "Kids", "Hawkins", "The Upside Down", "Lamps", "Fresh Blood", "Photos In The Woods", and "Hanging Lights". Great work from one of the most under-rated tenor players of the 60s! Jimmy Forrest was an excellent player who made only a handful of recordings at the time – but he blows with a deep confidence that should have made him one of the biggest new stars on the scene. This set's one of Jimmy's best, and features his laidback tenor in a quartet with Joe Zawinul on piano, shortly before Zawinul hooked up with Cannonball Adderley. The tracks are short, but the interplay between Forrest and Zawinul is tasty – a bit like the album made by Joe and Coleman Hawkins – and the rest of the group features Tommy Potter on bass and Clarence Johnston on drums. Savoy, 1945/1946/1947. Used ... Out Of Stock
The near complete studio recordings done by Dexter Gordon as a leader for Savoy in the mid 40s – key 78rpm recordings that helped redefine the sound of the tenor in jazz! The material here is all strongly boppish – and presented with alternate takes on a number of the sessions, making for a whopping 23 tracks that cover most of Dexter's master takes and a good number of unissued alternates! First up are 4 tracks with a 1945 quartet that includes Sadik Hakim on piano – followed by 8 more from a 1946 session with Bud Powell on piano, Max Roach on drums, and Leonard Hawkins on trumpet. These are followed by 3 great tracks from Gordon's 1947 session with Leo Parker on baritone and Tadd Dameron on piano – which roll into the last 8 tracks, all from a 1947 session that includes Fats Navarro on trumpet and Dameron again on piano. Titles include "So Easy", "Dexter's Riff", "Dexter's Deck", "Blow Mr Dexter", "Dexter's Minor Mad", "Dexter Digs In", "Dexter Rides Again", "Long Tall Dexter", and "Index". CD

Atomicat, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A searing set of tracks that uphold the commandments of rock and roll – but which might also make you break some of the Lord's commandments as well! The tracks here are all raw, gritty, and grooving – the mix of early rockers, R&B, and other late 50s styles we love from these Atomicat collections – presented without much in the way of notes, but packing plenty in the socking set list of 30 tunes on the CD! Titles include "Laurie Anne" by Glen Glenn, "Don't Burn Me Up" by Ray Ellington, "Mama Doll" by Roy Teo, "Liza Jane" by Dale Hawkins, "Steppin Out" by The Flairs, "Yes I'm Gonna Love You" by Sonny Anderson, "Little Jewel" by Tommy Jim Beam & The Four Fifths, "Short Fat Ben" by Phil Barclay & The Sliders, "Pretty Baby What's Your Name" by The Mellows, "I Ain't Givin Up Nothin" by Priscilla Bowman, and "Come On & Love Me" by The Champions. Coleman Hawkins & Lester YoungClassic Tenors (Contact pressing) ... LP
Contact, 1943. Very Good Gatefold ... $14.99
Seminal tenor sounds from two giants of the instrument – served up here from a set of early 40s material that originally appeared on 78rpm discs! Coleman Hawkins dominates the set – sounding wonderful in small group material that shows just how much his style had evolved from the decade before – blowing deeply and beautifully on titles that include "The Man I Love", "Sweet Lorraine", "Crazy Rhythm", "Vododte", "Hawkins Barrel House", and "Stumpy". Lester Young blows on the rest of the album – showcasing that warm yet bold tenor style he'd perfected with Count Basie – on titles that include "Hello Babe", "Linger Awhile", "I Got Rhythm", and "I'm Fer It Too". Epic/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1956. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This is the real deal for Screamin Jay Hawkins – a full album of his first early work for the Okeh label in the mid 50s, stuff that was recorded long before his too-gimmicky records for mainstream audiences! The sound here is hard and heavy – and pretty darn spooky too – best summed up by Hawkins' classic "I Put a Spell On You", which sets the tone here – but followed up beautifully by a batch of similar material that brings a new level of screamin' to 50s R&B! Titles include "Give Me My Boots & Saddle", "Hong Kong", "If You Are But A Dream", "You Made Me Love You", "Orange Colored Sky", "Temptation", and "I Love Paris" – and Jay's versions of the standards are almost as great as his original material! ✨✧ Duke EllingtonDuke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins (80s pressing) ... LP
Impulse, 1962. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A legendary meeting of two classic jazz talents late in their careers – in a setting that's ideal to bring out all the complexity of their well-honed genius! The approach of the album is mostly an Ellington one – as the group features some of Duke's stalwarts, like Ray Nance on trumpet, Johnny Hodges on alto, and Lawrence Brown on trombone – but Coleman Hawkins gets plenty of space as the main soloist on each number on tenor, alongside Duke, who also solos strongly on piano – both of them with those subtle modern elements that showed up wonderfully in their later work. As with most later records by the players, the writing is great – with a lot more dark moments than you'd expect – and titles include "The Rictic", "You Dirty Dog", "Limbo Jazz", "Wanderlust", and "Self Portrait Of The Bean". The story of the Wu-Tang Clan has been told often over the years – but this time around, it's told by one of the group's founding members – Lamont "U-God" Hawkins, who blends his own personal journey from the streets of Brooklyn with the rise of one of the most important hip hop groups of all time! The story is told from a very personal perspective, in a style that's nicely rough around the edges – like some of the less-edited autobiographies of older jazz musicians, which we've always enjoyed. 292 pages, hardcover. Kind of a hodge-podge from different sessions – but a nice little record, and one that's come to stand on its own over the years, thanks to the strength of the work! The album's a set of previously unissued tunes from Riverside sessions of the late 50s - material from classic dates that didn't make it onto the albums, but which is every bit as good! Titles include many classics – like Sonny Rollins and Sonny Clark playing "Funky Hotel Blues", plus "Blues For Tomorrow" by a septet that included Coleman Hawkins, Coltrane, Gigi Gryce, and Ray Copeland, which was lifted from a Monk session (without Monk!) Also includes "A Sad Thing" by Herbie Mann's Californians and "Let's Blow Some Blues" by Mundell Lowe Quintet. LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige/Swingville/OJC, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
Exellent late work by Hawk – way darker than you'd guess! The set features Coleman Hawkins as the main soloist with the Red Garland trio, and it's got a very open-ended session that has him blowing tones and phrases that you'd never hear on his earlier albums – moody, angular, and surprisingly modern at times – clearly picking up a bit of inspiration from his time with Monk and some of the younger players of the period. The record's also got a slightly gutbuckety quality that's more deeply soulful than the usual Red Garland outing – and titles include the great long track "Bean's Blues", plus "Blues For Ron", "Red Beans", and "It's A Blue World". 70s import issue of some great live playing by Hawk – laid down at Birdland in September of 1952, with 2 different groups: one that included Roy Eldridge, Horace Silver, and Curley Russell; and another that featured Howard McGhee, Silver, Russell, and Art Blakey. It's great to hear Hawkins in the company of these firey young boppers – and the album's exactly the kind of record that we use to prove the point that he was one of the most committed modernists of the postwar years. Titles include "Stuffy", "Disorder At The Border", "Rifftide", and a bonus interview called "The Hawk Talks". LP, Vinyl record album

Riverside/Milestone, Mid 40s/1957. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A nice set that brings together Hawk Flies High plus earlier material from 78s! The core record is a key album in the reintroduction of Coleman Hawkins in the late 50s – recorded in a style that still bears a lot of traces of earlier years, but at a time when Hawk was being claimed as a key influence by a variety of younger modernists! The set's got a sense of freedom that's really surprising – especially on the longer numbers, which unfold with some playful instrumental twists that seem to come especially from trumpeter Idrees Sulieman and trombonist JJ Johnson – both of whom are great on the record. Other players include Hank Jones on piano, Barry Galbraith on guitar, and Oscar Pettiford on bass – and titles include "Juicy Fruit", "Think Deep", "Blue Lights", "Sanctity", and "Chant". Other material is from 40s 78s – very nicely presented! LP, Vinyl record album

Solid country rock and more ornately furnished material from Ronnie "The Hawk" Hawkins – the late 50s rockabilly cat who went on to cut a number of underappreciated efforts and ultimately became best remembered as the fellow whose band went on to become The Band! This 1970 self-titled effort for Cotillion deserves a little more love. The slower numbers are geniunely tender and rewarding in a way that'll surprise you if you only know Ronnie for his hammy mugging and howling to the moon in The Last Waltz. Traffic get some help here from Muscle Shoals heavyweights Barry Beckett, Roger Hawkins, and Jimmy Johnson – a trio who help the group continue that richer, more expanded sound that was first unfurled on the group's Low Spark album! The sound is maybe a more focused attempt at territory from that record, but one that also really stretches things out too – long tracks that have just the right balance, and which never make the extra long space of the tunes feel like their wasted at all – just perfect settings for the energy of the tunes composed by Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi. A great little album by Burrell – one that has Ray Barretto on most cuts, giving the album a similar Latiny feel to his classic Midnight Blue album on Blue Note. The best part, though, is Coleman Hawkins, who plays tenor on 4 of the album's 7 tracks – 2 of which are bossa-tinged ditties, which sound like they're lifted right off of Ike Quebec's Soul Samba album. Rhythm is by Tommy Flanagan, Major Jolley, and Eddie Locke – and titles include "Tres Talbras", "Montono Blues", "Guilty", "No More", and "It's Getting Dark". Also issued as the album Bluesy Burrell. A really unique album from the great Etta Jones – a session recorded down in Muscle Shoals, and not in Chicago – a setting that gives James an extra sort of deep soul power! The backing is nicely different than some of the other Chess material – killer work from the legendary Fame Studios lineup that included Barry Beckett on organ, Charles Chalmers on tenor, and Roger Hawkins on drums – all coming together with the great Rick Hall at the production helm! Etta's back in hard-belting R&B-tinged territory here – a bit more sophisticated than the 50s, with a good mix of hard soul numbers and ballads, opening up in some southern territory that really suits her well. One of the greatest tenor stars in postwar Europe was Guy Lafitte – a magnificent player whose genius rivalled Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster, but also one who's been sadly underrecognized outside the French scene of which he was a part! Most of Lafitte's best work from the old days is extremely rare – especially the small group material like this, which really lets you hear his amazing tone on the tenor – played here with a quality that often rivals some of the best Verve tenor-based albums of the time. The set features material from two different 10" albums, and the great Blue & Sentimental record – and all the tracks feature vibes from Geo Daly – an amazing complement to Lafitte's tenor! Other players include Raymond Fol and Andre Periany on piano, Jean Pierre Sasson on guitar, Buddy Banks on bass, and Teddy Martin on drums – and the set features 20 tracks in all, with titles that include "Stardust", "Krum Elbow Blues", "Where Or When", "Chase A La Baute", "If I Could Be With You", "Melodie Au Crepuscule", "Partnership Boys", "Dans Un Vieux Livre", and "Flying Back". A treasure trove of rare work from the great Guy Lafitte – a rich-voiced tenor talent from the French scene of the postwar years – every bit as important to their world as Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young were to ours! Lafitte's a player who came up in larger groups – and as such, developed a tone that could really stand out of the pack – a deep, soulful approach to jazz that's even more compelling in the small combo material features in this set – all tracks from rare 10" albums and 7" EP releases that are brought together here for the first time – a much-needed look at Lafitte's years before his more-circulated full albums recorded for RCA in the 60s and 70s. The sound is superb throughout – and other players include George Arvanitas and Raymond Fol on piano, Nat Peck on trombone, Roger Guerin on trumpet, and Dominique Chanson on alto and flute. Bop legend Kenny Hagood sings on three tracks – and titles include "Le Conte", "Corail", "Portrait De Camille", "A Song Was Born", "Queenie", "Tranquillment", "Plucky", "The Mill & The River", "Le Chat Qui Dort", and "Lonesome Lover Blues".
