Soul Jazz Pop/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Clubby work from the South African scene of the 70s – but a set that's got a very equal amount of jazz – as you might guess from the group's saxophone-wielding leader on the cover! Tracks are long, and build from an instrumental core first – often leaving out vocals entirely, as the grooves spin out with sweet keyboards, riffing guitar, and driving basslines – which open up to some excellent solos on tenor and trumpet, often with a vibe that echoes some of the South African jazz styles of the decade! But the vocals are nice, too – and come out especially strong on the album's classic "Oh Yeh Soweto" – a sweet ripoff of the Lamont Dozier track "Back To My Roots". Other tracks include "Saturday Express", "Got Me Tight", "Friday Night", and "Wind & Fire". CD
