VariousStax Of Funk – The Funky Truth ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Funky genius from the legendary Stax studios! During the 60s, Stax was well known for their work in the soul music field – turning out hit singles by the likes of Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and others – but after 1968, when the label finished their deal with Atlantic, they really started getting down and dirty, and hitting on all burners in the funk department. This tasty set features 21 tracks from those exiting years –many of them only ever issued on singles, and a few of them by some of the label's more famous LP artists – but all of them with a nice Memphis funky groove! Titles include "Turn Your Damper Down" by Rufus Thomas, "Broadway Freeze" by Harvey Scales, "Life Is Funky" by Round Robin Monopoly, "The Dryer" by Roy Lee Johnson, "She's My Old Lady Too" by Lee Sain, "Slipped & Tripped" by The Sweet Inspirations, "Brothers & Sisters" by Kim Weston, "Movin Dancer" by Bobby Holley, "Eli's Pork Chop" by Little Sonny, "A Man Never Knows" by Chris & Shack, "Grab A Handful" by Art Jerry Miller, "I'll Kill A Brick (About My Man)" by Hot Sauce, "Watch The Dog That Brings The Bone" by Inez Foxx, "Sock Soul" by The Bar Kays, and "Getting Funky Round Here" by Black Nasty! VariousWritten In Their Soul – Stax Singer/Songwriter Demos (7CD set) ... CD
Stax/Craft, Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Used 7CD ... $69.99
An incredible addition to the rich legacy of Stax Records – a massive collection of 146 tracks, almost all of which appear here for the first time ever – a set that represents recordings done by all the great songwriters who were working for Stax at the time, most of whom were also recording artists on the label! Given that fact, these aren't scratchy recordings performed by hacks who can't sing – as almost all the material features the sort of top-shelf vocalists who made Stax such a deep soul powerhouse in the 60s and 70s – represented here in a style that shows just how much freedom of creative expression the label allowed its best – very different than the way some of the bigger companies would just cram a song down a quickly-booked session in the studio! Plus, these demo tracks are done in a variety of modes – some with very stripped-down instrumentation, some with fuller groups – and together, they offer a key look at the creative process at Stax – one that's very different than the iconic sound of productions in their Memphis studio, and which really shows an even deeper range of expression through the variety of approaches. The 7CD set has a really cool approach – CDs 1, 2, and 3 feature demos by Stax artists singing their own material; CD4 features Stax singer/songwriters working on non-Stax material; and CDs 5, 6, and 7 feature songs by these artists that were never issued at the time! The set includes work by The Staple Singers, William Bell, Carla Thomas, Bettye Crutcher, Homer Banks, Eddie Floyd, Veda Brown, Frederick Knight, Mack Rice, Delaney Bramlett, Jimmy Hughes, and many others – and the package features 146 tracks in all, with copious notes on the material! Epic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 1960s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing early work from The Staple Singers – six records that are quite different than their later fame on Stax Records during the 70s – and which have a vibe that's different too, yet equally powerful! There's a sublime mix of social politics and spiritual energy going on here – as the quartet are already moving far past standard gospel modes, and mixing their faith with a strong message during these key years of the Civil Rights era – really bridging divides with the music on these albums. The music has that sublime blend that the group perfected right from the start – almost a secret inclusion of a larger social agenda, presented amidst gospel tunes re-arranged by Pops Staples – plus some of his own great tracks too – able to reach across the aisle, and bring so many new ears to the messages the group was putting forth. The box set features six full albums – some never reissued since the LP era – Amen, Pray On, "Why, "For What It's Worth, What The World Needs Now Is Love, and the great live album Freedom Highway – recorded in Chicago! Later work from Booker T and crew – an album that always gets lost in the shuffle, but which also includes lots of great moments, and a bit more funk than in earlier years! The rhythm section's loosening up a bit on the set – led by the mighty Al Jackson, and working past that tight Memphis slam-dunk – into a freer, funkier vibe that was obviously influenced by the changes of the times. This is heard to best effect on the group's versions of tracks like "The Horse", "Sing A Simple Song", and "It's Your Thing" – but it also comes out nicely on their great reworkings of familiar numbers like "Light My Fire", "Mrs. Robinson", and "Lady Madonna". A really fantastic projects from Jake Ferguson, who you'll know for his work in the Heliocentrics – working here with excellent funky beats from Malcolm Catto, and in a style that's a lot more hip hop than some of his earlier work! There's strong guests throughout – a lineup of singers and MCs that includes Percee P, Anthony Joseph, Ugochi Nwaogwugwu, Yolanda Lear, and others – all working in a mode that's got all the moody, trippy vibes of The Heliocentrics – but a much more righteous, message-oriented vibe overall! A wonderful new chapter for Jake, and a record that deserves to make a mighty big impact – thanks to tunes that include "Skull Tax", "Indifference", "Why Do They Fear Us", "Black Gold", "Prison Of Skin", "We Need Freedom", and "Intensity In Five". The stunning debut as a solo act for Durand Jones – a set that's even deeper and more powerful than his work with The Indications, at a level that shows that Jones is a soul singer with a hell of a lot of potential, and not just another voice working in a funk band! There's plenty of deep soul styles going on here – tunes that are more laidback and slow-stepping than before, so that Jones can really unfurl his vocal majesty, and create a sound that provides a fresh new chapter in the legacy of southern soul – not a retro rehash of modes from Stax or Atlantic, but a real 21st Century take on the territory! Infracom (Germany), 2002. Used ... $6.99
Fantastic stuff – and a jazz remix project with a real difference! The difference here is that instead of taking older jazz tracks and re-doing them in dance music versions, the set takes original dance tracks and re-does them in jazz versions! The result is wonderful – a warm-voiced album that's one of our favorite releases of the year, and proof that there's a beating heart of soul in the hipster underground! The set brings together talents that are known for their work in bridging both worlds of music – and performers on the record include Till Bronner, Erik Truffaz, Nathan Haines, Matthias Vogt, and Oliver Bott. Instrumentation includes vibes, piano, trumpet, tenor, and lots of wonderful guest vocals – and the album features covers of "Cupid & Orlando" by Aromabar, "Release Your Mind" by Soulpatrol, "People Come Running" by Taxi, "Torch Of Freedom" by Cleveland Watkiss, "The Way I Swing" by DJ Matt, "Arena" by Kosma, and "Mental Strength" by Megashire. The first-ever live album from Joni Mitchell – and a record that sounds a fair bit different than a concert set might have during the Reprise years – as Joni's got plenty of help from Tom Scott & The LA Express, who bring a tight yet intimate vibe to the proceedings! Joni's definitely a superstar at this point – as you might guess from the size of the amphitheater on the cover – but she's also got an even stronger ability to come across with a personal, pointed style – one that's very different than the overblown hype of so many other 70s live albums. The set includes a few tracks not yet on albums, and a nice mix of material – including the live version of "Big Yellow Taxi" that ended up as a hit single – and the cuts"You Turn Me On I'm A Radio", "Blue", "Woman Of Heart & Mind", "Both Sides Now", "Real Good For Free", "Jericho", "Circle Game", "Cactus Tree", "The Last Time I Saw Richard", "People's Parties", and "Woodstock". A heady dip into the glorious work of soul music from Miami – the city that took the reigns for southern soul after initial waves of creativity in Memphis and Muscle Shoals! Miami's best known for its big disco hits of the mid 70s, but most of the music here is from the years before then – a time when Henry Stone and his early TK Records empire were drawing a lot of attention in the city, turning out some killer funk and soul – and also catching the interest of Atlantic Records, who began moving some of their artists down to Miami to record as well! The mix of modes here is wonderful – deep soul vocals, of the sort you'd know from Stax or Fame Records – mixed with newer modes of expression, currents of funk, and some killer studio techniques – all to serve a smoking batch of 20 tracks in all! Titles include "Winterman" by Charles Allen, "Africano" by Timmy Thomas, "Party Freaks" by Miami, "Clean Up Man" by Jimmy Bo Horne, "Concrete Jungle" by Little Beaver, "I Get Lifted" by Latimore, "Kisses Kisses Kisses"b y Lynn Williams, "Do It Again" by Paulette Reaves, "Ten Tons Of Dynamite" by Clarence Reid, "Jimmy Bo Charlie" by Robert Moore, "All This Love That I'm Giving" by Gwen McCrae, "Keep It Up" by Milton Wright, "Monkey Tamarind" by Beginning Of The End, "Free I'll Always Be" by Chocolate Clay, and "Burn The Candle" by Raw Soul Express. A beautiful collection of work from the legendary James Carr – a singer that those in the know place at the same level as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, or any of the deep soul greats of the 60s! Like Otis, James recorded heavily on the Memphis scene at the time – not for Stax or Atlantic, but for the smaller Goldwax label – who really hit magic with the sounds you'll hear on this set – a perfect blend of the richness of James' voice with the kind of slow-burning soul sounds that the scene was really hitting during its golden years! The songwriters alone here are enough to sell the set to any fan of classic southern soul – as tunes include contributions from Chips Moman, Dan Penn, Quinton Claunch, William Bell, and Spooner Oldham – writers who maybe never had a better interpreter of their work than Carr – who knocks it out of the park here on tunes that include "Dark End Of The Street", "You've Got My Mind Messed Up", "I'm A Fool For You", "A Lucky Loser", "Let's Face Facts", "Your Love Made A U Turn", "Freedom Train", "Pouring Water On A Drowning Man", "You Hurt So Good", "Love Attack", and "A Man Needs A Woman". Sounds Of Memphis/Ace (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The later years of the Sound Of Memphis studio – cuts from a time when the legendary deep soul powerhouse was trying on some of the newer modes from the end of the 70s! The work here is a real lost slice of Memphis soul – music from a time when the heyday of Stax and Hi Records had long passed, but smaller indies like SOM were going strong – and able to capture the shifting sound in the great soul city – as singers worked in the sorts of funky club and boogie modes you'd more regularly associate with New York or Chicago! The quality level is surprisingly great – especially since there's a nicely indie vibe to these cuts – not polished disco rehash, but the sort of underground club material that we've always loved from reissues on labels like Numero or Soul Cal – coming here from the surprising source of Memphis. Even more importantly, almost all this material never saw the light of day at the time – since the SOM connections to bigger labels had faded – so the whole thing's like a time capsule, taking you back to some real under-exposed days on the Memphis scene! Titles include "Dream Girl" and "Groove With A Feeling" by Freedom Express, "You Can Bet I Can Get You Yet" and "What You Do For Love" by Lee Moore, "Ridin" and "Attraction" by Erma Shaw, "Cold Blooded Sally" by Fran Farley, "New Lang Syne" by Kannon, "I'll Be Around" by The Jacksonians, "Gone" by Vision, "We Need Love" by Donald O'Connor, "Tighter Tighter" by Demetrius & Takelia, and "Don't Fight It" by Louis Williams. VariousMarvellous Boy – Calypso From West Africa ... CD
Honest Jons, Late 40s/1950s. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 18.99
An incredible collection from Honest Jons – and like some of the rest of their best, music we never would have heard otherwise! The focus here is on calypso music, but recorded in West Africa – not the usual Caribbean setting – a very unusual strain of styles that cropped up in the fading colonial years of the British Empire – as rhythms were routed southward to Africa, via Caribbean migration to the London scene – making for some really fresh sounds in the end! The work is often much heavier on percussion than its more familiar variant – and other instrumentation includes some great horn parts, and bits of guitar – alongside vocals on most numbers. As usual, the notes are historically helpful and very well done – and titles include "Scrubbs Na Marvellous Boy" and "Poor Freetown Boy" by Famous Scrubbs, "Olubunmi" by Roy Chicago, "Ariwo" by Chris Ajilo & His Cubanos, "Taxi Driver" and "Gentlemen Bobby" by Bobby Benson & His Combo, "Mami" by The Rhythm Aces, "Arria Baby" and "Fire Fire Fire" by Ebenezer Calender & His Maringer Band, "Tree & The Monkey" by ET Mensah, and "Yabomisa Sawale" by Victor Olaiya. ✨✧ VariousBlack Hole – Finnish Disco & Electronic Music From Private Pressings & Unreleased Tapes 1980 to 1991 ... LP
Svart (Finland), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet little collection that goes way past the disco in the title – but maybe that's what you'd expect, give that most of the music is from the post-disco generation of the 80s! There's still plenty of clubby elements in the music, but the artists here have really taken off from late 70s American and Euro modes – adding in some bits of electro pop, or using some of the new technologies to create more programmed rhythms that point the way towards future dance styles to come. In a way, the special shift of the scene is similar to what happened with Italo Disco of the 80s – although with a different sound overall – and as with other compilations of this nature on Svart, the whole thing's a great look at a far off scene we never would have heard otherwise. Some cuts are so rare, they don't even have titles – and tunes include "In An Other Time" by Free Feeling Band, "Black Hole" by Syntax, "Mabellene" by Groove Night, "Israel Is Real" by We, "Guilty Of The Crime" by Pixies, "SMO" by Kim Kuusi, "Tunnen" by Jarkko Valja, and "Fantasia" by Anssi Timo. ✨✧ Little RichardEvery Hour With Little Richard ... CD
Camden/Sony, Early 1950s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Some of the earliest work ever recorded by Little Richard – raw, rootsy R&B that's free from most of the cliches of his later hits for Specialty Records! The material here isn't as distinctly Little Richard-esque as the sound in years to come – but that's also part of the appeal too – as the tunes offer up Richard's amazing vocals in settings that are more in the mode of some of the King Records work of the period, with all the rough, raspy edges that reference might imply! Titles include "Why Did You Leave Me", "Get Rich Quick", "Every Hour", "Taxi Blues", "I Brought It All On Myself", "Thinkin About My Mother", and "Please Have Mercy On Me". CD

✨✧ JBsFood For Thought/Doing It To Death/Damn Right I Am Somebody ... CD
People/Robinsongs (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Essential funk in a single set – three killer albums from James Brown's legendary backing group! First up is Food For Thought – the classic first album by The JBs – James Brown's Fred Wesley-led backing band, and the force behind most of his greatest records of the early 70s! The band are incredible at this point – sharper, harder, and funkier than just about any other combo around – and that includes all the thousands of groups in the funky 45 underground who were always trying to copy their sound, but never got things this right! Not only are the rhythms the stuff of legend – but the use of the instruments is far far above the norm – as can be heard on the mindblowing "The Grunt", which was sampled heavily by Public Enemy to great fame – and which features a saxophone solo that sounds more like a whistling tea kettle! The set collects some of the group's best early singles, and includes all of the short little funky cuts that made them a legend right out of the box – "Pass the Peas", "The Grunt", "These Are The JBs", "Hot Pants Road", "Wine Spot", "To My Brother", "Blessed Blackness", "Theme From King Heroin", "Escapism (parts 1 & 2), and "Gimme Some More" – all together here in one tight little album of massive funky hard beats and breaks! Doing It To Death is an incredible album – a landmark piece of funk that nobody should be without, funk fan or not! The album is the second to feature James Brown's famous backing combo of the early 70s – and unlike their first one, which was really more of a collection of singles, this album has the group playing hard, long, and loud, in the free funk improvisational mode that was James' real contribution to the music at the time. The tracks are all incredibly long, with James at the forefront, egging the band on with shouts and comments – but also letting them open up large instrumentally, playing in a mode that's as much jazz as it is funky soul. The whole thing's peppered with some nice shorter segues between tracks – but the long cuts are the winners, and are some of the best funk ever recorded! Titles include "Mo Peas", "Doing It To Death", "La Di Da La Di Day", "You Can Have Watergate, Just Gimme Some Bucks & I'll Be Straight", and "Sucker". Last up is Damn Right I Am Somebody – quite possibly our favorite record by the JBs, ever! The set starts with a wonderful conversational bit – rapping and musing on the idea of "Damn Right, I Am Somebody" – showing the group in a political and righteous mode for the first time ever. The grooves then kick in – with the same heavy funk as on earlier records, but also a nice nod towards experimental production – from strange fade ups and fade downs, to stark time and rhythm changes, and even bits of electronics used to create some very cool moments in the grooves! The whole thing's as dead funky as can be, and is stuffed with insane classics like "Blow Your Head", "Same Beat", "Damn Right I am Somebody", "I'm Payin' Taxes, What am I Buyin'", and a great cover of Marvin Gaye's "You Sure Love to Ball"!
