✨✧ Tamiko JonesCloudy ... LP
Atlantis II, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Probably the greatest album by Tamiko Jones – and one that does an excellent job of matching arrangements to her sweet seductive vocal style. Tamiko put the whole thing together herself, and the album features lots of nice keyboard work, and some arranging help from Paul Riser and Tommy Stewart. The whole thing's got a nice slinky style to it, with good tight rhythm parts, sweeping strings, and nice choppy instrumentation under Tamiko's sultry vocals. Includes a nice cover of "Creepin", plus the cuts "Make Love To Your Mind", "Feel Like Makin Love", "Cloudy", "Let It Flow", "Reachin Out For Your Love", and "Boy, You're Growin On Me". ✨✧ Tamiko JonesLet It Flow/Can't Live Without Your Love ... 7-inch
Polydor, 1979. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A great mellow club groover from Tamiko! "Let It Flow" has a sweet clavinet kind of groove before the drums and strings kick in – then opens up into a sound that's got plenty of full disco touches, but which still also nicely holds onto her warm soul vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Herbie Mann & Tamiko JonesMann & A Woman ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A really unique collaboration between fluteman Herbie Mann and soul singer Tamiko Jones – a vocalist who's always a really special talent, and who has an equally great ear for jazz as well! That style works perfectly here – as the vibe is somewhere between Herbie's Latin and Brazilian-styled sets for Atlantic, and some of the groovier jazz of the 60s – particularly the styles influenced by hip soundtracks of the time. Arrangements are very fresh, and even make familiar tunes pop nicely – thanks to work on the charts from Joe Zawinul, Melba Liston, and Jimmy Wisner. But the really special talent here is Tamiko – who sometimes sings lyrics, sometimes works wordlessly in a really cool mode – on titles that include "A Man & A Woman", "O Barquinho", "It's Time That You Settled Down", "Sidewinder", "Day Tripper", "Sunny", and "How Insensitive". ✨✧ Tamiko JonesI'll Be Anything For You ... LP
A&M/CTI, 1968. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from Tamiko Jones – one of the more enigmatic soul singers of her generation! Tamiko could always handle a number of styles – and on this set, she moves between jazz and deep soul, working through a set of tracks that were recorded at either Sam Phillips in Memphis, or Rudy Van Gelder's famous jazz studio in New Jersey. Arrangements are by Teacho Wiltshire, Horace Ott, and Artie Butler – and Solomon Burke makes a guest appearance on the track "Try It Baby". Other tunes include "Where Are They Now?", "Black Is Black", "Ya Ya", "Suddenly", "This Time Tomorrow", and "Please Return Your Love To Me". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousDisco Discharge – Classic Disco ... CD
Edsel/Demon (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy 2CD ... $31.99 34.99
Way more than just classic disco – hardly the hits package you might expect, and a really well-chosen batch of grooves that gets right down to the music that really mattered on the dancefloor back in the day! As you'd hear in the best clubs of the late 70s, the grooves here come from a range of different sources – funky jazz, clubby soul, crossover club, and more – tracks from both big labels and small, laid out back to back at a level that really recreates the excitement of a hip disco back in the day – not in a live mix, so you can enjoy each song on its own, but still in a way that makes you feel like there's a legendary DJ guiding the grooves. Titles include "Love Magic" by John Davis & Monster Orchestra, "Thanks For Loving Me" by Double Discovery, "Do Your Dance" by Rose Royce, "Keep On Dancin" by Gary's Gang, "Counting On Love" by Peter Jacques Band, "Gone Gone Gone" by Johnny Mathis, "What A Difference A Day Makes" by Esther Phillips, "Makes You Blind (re-edit)" by Glitter Band, "Just A Groove" by Glen Adams Affair, "Livin Up To Love" by Companion, "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone" by Manhattan Transfer, "Turn The Music Up" by Players Association, "It Burns Me Up" by Change, "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This" by Idris Muhammad, "Lady Bug (disco mix)" by Bumblebee Unlimited, "Bama Boogie Woogie" by Cleveland Eaton, "Can't Live Without Your Love" by Tamiko Jones, "Dancin" by Grey & Hanks, and "Cherchez La Femme/Se Si Bon" by Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band. 2CD set comes in a cool 7" package – with 24 tracks in all! VariousYet Mo' Mod Jazz ... CD
Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A great mix of funky jazz, jazzy funk, and funky soul – all pulled from the Atlantic catalog of the 60s, and including some very tasty numbers that were only ever issued as funky 45s! The set's one of the nicest in the great Mod Jazz series on Ace, and it's the only one to feature Atlantic material, which rarely ever gets the same funky treatment as other labels from the 60s. Titles include "The Sidewinder" by Tamiko Jones & Herbie Mann, "Do It To Death" by Jackie Ivory, "Jet Set" by Dave Pike, "Fever" by Esther Phillips, "Jam Up Twist" by Tommy Ridgely, "Sticks & Stones (part 1)" by Gene Ludwig, "Bloodshot" by Hubert Laws, "Sombrero Sam" by Charles Lloyd, "The Foolkiller" by Mose Allison, "One Note Samba" by MJQ & Laurindo Almeida, "It's A Funky Thing – Right On (part 1)" by Herbie Mann, "Watermelon Man Ska" by Byron Lee & The Dragonaires, "Trese Lobos" by Mark III Trio, "You're The Boss" by LaVern Baker & Jimmy Ricks, "Burnin Coal" by Les McCann, and "Twist City" by Matthew Gee & Johnny Griffin. 26 cuts in all – and like finding a jukebox that's lain dormant in a jazz lounge for 30 years!
