✨✧ Talking HeadsFear Of Music ... LP
Sire, 1979. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really tremendous album from The Talking Heads – and a set that moves far past their already-great early records, to really show a rhythmic complexity we never would have expected! Brian Eno is helping the group in the studio again here, and the record really shows both David Byrne and Eno's late 70s fascination with global rhythms – elements that are often used in spare, simple little ways to really help inflect the tunes with a playful imagination that goes way beyond the colder post-punk and new wave of most of their contemporaries! The balance of previous aesthetics with these new grooves is wonderful – heard to great effect on the classic club cut "I Zimbra" – but brewing up strongly underneath on gems that include "Mind", "Paper", "Cities", "Life During Wartime", "Memories Can't Wait", "Air", "Heaven", "Animals", "Electric Guitar", and "Drugs". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the embossed cover, includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has some edge wear.)

✨✧ Talking HeadsMore Songs About Buildings & Food ... LP
Sire, 1978. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Early genius from the Talking Heads – a set that's got a much sparer sound than most of their later work, and a surprisingly groovy feel overall! The starkness of the group's debut is still very much in place – lots of tight interplay between bass and guitar – but the rhythms are also strongly pronounced too, and often get a bit funky at times – in ways that almost outdo most of the artier punk and funk that was to come in the next few years of the New York scene! Brian Eno produced the album with the group, and his sonic sensibilities really add a lot to the record – in ways that are much more subtle than his own 70s albums, but still a very big part of the set. Titles include "Thank You For Sending Me An Angel", "With Our Love", "The Good Thing", "Warning Sign", "The Girls Want To Be With The Girls", "Found A Job", "Artists Only", "I'm Not In Love", "Take Me To The River", "Stay Hungry", and "The Big Country". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear, aging, and small initials in marker.)

✨✧ Talking HeadsSpeaking In Tongues ... LP
Sire, 1983. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
David Byrne brings his love of funk and soul to the forefront – tightening things up a bit from before, but still staying strongly in a classic Talking Heads groove! The record's possibly the last of the group's initial classic run, and has a surprisingly soulful feel at times – a hybrid of early 80s funk and club modes, played by guests who include Wally Badarou on synth, Bernie Worrell on keyboards, and Steve Scales and David Van Tieghem on percussion. Nona Hendryx sings a bit of backing vocals too – and Byrne really steps up to the grooves without ever going too far over the top. Titles include "Burning Down The House", "Making Flippy Floppy", "Girlfriend Is Better", "Slippery People", "I Get Wild/Wild Gravity", "Swamp", "Moon Rocks", "Pull Up The Roots", and "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing with Sterling stamp. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Label has a name in marker.)

✨✧ Talking HeadsTalking Heads 77 ... CD
Sire, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
The mindblowing first album by The Talking Heads – a bold statement by a very young band who'd go on to shape the sounds of the left field for generations to come! The sound is spare and very focused – maybe the first layer that David Byrne would then build up when adding more percussion, horns, electronics, and some of those elements from funk and global music that were such a continuing influence. Here, the group's fresh out of school, filled with imagination, and able to do so much with just a little – all led by Byrne's fantastic sense of songwriting and presentation – in a mode that's completely his own. The record's not punk, not new wave, and still continues to be in its own space of inventiveness, imagination, and forthright lyricism. Every song's a classic – and titles include "Uh-Oh Love Comes To Town", "New Feeling", "Tentative Decisions", "Happy Day", "Who Is It", "No Compassion", "The Book I Read", "Don't Worry About The Government", "First Week/Last Week Carefree", "Psycho Killer", and "Pulled Up". Philip BaileyLove Will Find A Way ... CD
Verve, 2019. Used ... $7.99
Philip Bailey's looking hipper than usual on the cover – and he's sounding hipper than usual within – thanks to fantastic production help from Robert Glasper, Christian McBride, and Chick Corea – all artists who play on the record, and help give Bailey a really timeless sense of soul! The man himself needs no introduction – thanks to his long legacy in Earth Wind & Fire, and a range of great solo records too – but there's really something different, and something special taking place here – as Bailey pushes both his vocal range and sense of songform, working through music by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Oscar Brown Jr, and even the Talking Heads – while also turning in some great songs of his own, co-penned with some of the album's collaborators. The instrumentation is served up by a dream group of jazz talents – Kamasi Washington on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, Robert Glasper and Chick Corea on keyboards, Steve Wilson on saxes and flute, Lionel Loueke on guitar, and Christian McBride on bass – and although the record features guest vocals from Bilal and Casey Benjamin, it's Bailey's work that's the real main attraction. Titles include "We're A Winner", "Stairway To The Stars", "Just To Keep Your Satisfied", "Once In A Lifetime", "Billy Jack", "You're Everything", "Brooklyn Blues", "Sacred Sounds", and "Love Will Find A Way". Edikanfo Super African BandPace Setters ... CD
EG/Glitterbeat (Germany), 1981. New Copy ... $8.99
A classic album from this great group from Ghana – one that probably got more exposure than usual, thanks to the fact that they were taken under the wing of Brian Eno, who produced the album, in a tradition that would stretch back to Ginger Baker's work with Fela! The group have a great sound here – bold, fast-moving rhythms – with elements in Eno's production that almost recall his work with the Talking Heads – especially his way of bringing out the most robust elements in the basslines and percussion! The whole thing is done with a great balance – nicely respectful, but also with a slight updating of the sonic quality – yet never in a way that's got the more commercial inclinations of the world music boom to come. There's some cool moogy moments at time – almost bursting out of the mix in the way that Eno's electronics would pepper some of his early work with Roxy Music – and titles include "Gbenta", "Something Lefeh-O", "Blinking Eyes", and "Moonlight Africa". Brian Eno & David ByrneMy Life In The Bush Of Ghosts (expanded & remastered) ... CD
Nonesuch, 1981. Used ... $9.99
A groundbreaking collaboration between Brian Eno & David Byrne – recorded with a spare, stripped down love of electronics and found sound samples – in a mode that would have a huge influence on countless records to come! Part of the set resonates with the quirky grooves found in Byrne's early Talking Heads records – but the overall sound is much more stark than that work, and is characterized by key found vocals and odd ethnic bits that really set the tone for each new tune. Eno's influence is felt strongly in the simplicity of the tracks, and in the darkly resonant production modes – that classic Eno touch used here before it became a bit too trademark, in a way that could still make a record like this sound great, even when coming from major label sources! A key force in shaping countless genres to come in the next 25 years – with great tracks that include "America Is Waiting", "Regiment", "The Jezebel Spirit", "Moonlight In Glory", "A Secret Life", "Come With Us", and "Mountain Of Needles". Plus, this new version adds in 7 more bonus tracks that include "Number 8 Mix", "Pitch To Voltage", "Two Against Three", "Vocal Outtakes", and "Defiant" – all a fair bit darker than the original album! ✨✧ B-52sLive! 8-24-1979 ... CD
Rhino/Real Gone, 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A first ever release of this killer B-52s live set – recorded in 1979, shortly after the release of their first record – opening for the Talking Heads in Boston! The band is in peak early form here, really throwing a hell of a great party on stage, with a set that's heavy on classics from first and second albums, the latter of which wouldn't even be released until the following year! There's a nicely raw feel to the record – a reminder that although they broke to the mainstream on a big label, these guys came out of the late 70s indie underground – working here with the kind of offbeat energy that made them a standout act both in their hometown of Athens – and in the New York scene where they really made their mark. Titles include "52 Girls", "606-0842", "Devil In My Car", "Dance This Mess Around", "Rock Lobster", and "Strobe Light". CD
