Talking HeadsFear Of Music (CD & DVD-Audio – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sire/Rhino, 1979. Used CD & DVD-Audio ... $24.99
A really tremendous album from The Talking Heads – and a set that moves far past their already-great early records, to really show a rhythmic complexity we never would have expected! Brian Eno is helping the group in the studio again here, and the record really shows both David Byrne and Eno's late 70s fascination with global rhythms – elements that are often used in spare, simple little ways to really help inflect the tunes with a playful imagination that goes way beyond the colder post-punk and new wave of most of their contemporaries! The balance of previous aesthetics with these new grooves is wonderful – heard to great effect on the classic club cut "I Zimbra" – but brewing up strongly underneath on gems that include "Mind", "Paper", "Cities", "Life During Wartime", "Memories Can't Wait", "Air", "Heaven", "Animals", "Electric Guitar", and "Drugs". CD includes 4 bonus tracks, 3 of which are previously unissued, plus DVD with 5.1 surround mix of the orginal album and bonus videos taken from a German TV appearance. CD
(Out of print, 2006 CD plus DVD-Audio pressing with 5.1 surround mix. DVD does note specify region or format, but appears to be an European pressing.)

Talking HeadsMore Songs About Buildings & Food (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Sire/Rhino, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Early genius from the Talking Heads – a set that's got a much sparer sound than most of their later work, and a surprisingly groovy feel overall! The starkness of the group's debut is still very much in place – lots of tight interplay between bass and guitar – but the rhythms are also strongly pronounced too, and often get a bit funky at times – in ways that almost outdo most of the artier punk and funk that was to come in the next few years of the New York scene! Brian Eno produced the album with the group, and his sonic sensibilities really add a lot to the record – in ways that are much more subtle than his own 70s albums, but still a very big part of the set. Titles include "Thank You For Sending Me An Angel", "With Your Love", "The Good Thing", "Warning Sign", "The Girls Want To Be With The Girls", "Found A Job", "Artists Only", "I'm Not In Love", "Take Me To The River", "Stay Hungry", and "The Big Country". Talking HeadsRemain In Light (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sire/Rhino, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 24.99
Some of the most compelling grooves the Talking Heads ever recorded – a set that sparkles with imaginative touches, and railroads forward on a wave of complicated rhythms! The sound is brilliant throughout – a genre-less approach that sheds the group's earlier art nerd aesthetic for one that's clearly influenced by late 70s funk and club – but takes that influence in a whole new direction! The whole thing's even fresher than some of the artier downtown moments that bubbled around at the time – as David Byrne and the group actually managed to cross over big with the record – hitting not only urban markets, but also getting some play from the classic rock crowd too. Brian Eno produced, and co-wrote the songs with the group – and some great Green World-esque electronics bubble through the mix, and hold the whole thing together beautifully. Titles include "Houses In Motion", "Once In A Lifetime", "The Great Curve", "Crosseyed & Painless", "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)", "Listening Wind", "Seen & Not Seen", and "The Overload". ✨✧ Talking HeadsSpeaking In Tongues ... LP
Sire, 1983. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
David Byrne brings his love of funk and soul to the forefront – tightening things up a bit from before, but still staying strongly in a classic Talking Heads groove! The record's possibly the last of the group's initial classic run, and has a surprisingly soulful feel at times – a hybrid of early 80s funk and club modes, played by guests who include Wally Badarou on synth, Bernie Worrell on keyboards, and Steve Scales and David Van Tieghem on percussion. Nona Hendryx sings a bit of backing vocals too – and Byrne really steps up to the grooves without ever going too far over the top. Titles include "Burning Down The House", "Making Flippy Floppy", "Girlfriend Is Better", "Slippery People", "I Get Wild/Wild Gravity", "Swamp", "Moon Rocks", "Pull Up The Roots", and "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)". ✨✧ Talking HeadsTalking Heads: 77 (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Sire/Rhino, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The mindblowing first album by The Talking Heads! 77 is a record with a nice, stripped-down approach, at least when compared to the layered sounds and multi-media extravaganzas to come – but it's still wildly inventive – especially given their youth! We can think of few bands as imaginative and free-thinking as The Talking Heads who were making music this accessible – even at this early stage. A landmark! Includes "Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town", "New Feeling", "Tentative Decisions", "Happy Day", "Who Is It?", "No Compassion", "The Book I Read", "Don't Worry About The Government", "First Week/Last Week. . .Carefree", 'Psycho Killer" and "Pulled Up". B-52sLive! 8-24-1979 ... CD
Rhino/Real Gone, 1979. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A first ever release of this killer B-52s live set – recorded in 1979, shortly after the release of their first record – opening for the Talking Heads in Boston! The band is in peak early form here, really throwing a hell of a great party on stage, with a set that's heavy on classics from first and second albums, the latter of which wouldn't even be released until the following year! There's a nicely raw feel to the record – a reminder that although they broke to the mainstream on a big label, these guys came out of the late 70s indie underground – working here with the kind of offbeat energy that made them a standout act both in their hometown of Athens – and in the New York scene where they really made their mark. Titles include "52 Girls", "606-0842", "Devil In My Car", "Dance This Mess Around", "Rock Lobster", and "Strobe Light". CD

Philip BaileyLove Will Find A Way ... CD
Verve, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Philip Bailey's looking hipper than usual on the cover – and he's sounding hipper than usual within – thanks to fantastic production help from Robert Glasper, Christian McBride, and Chick Corea – all artists who play on the record, and help give Bailey a really timeless sense of soul! The man himself needs no introduction – thanks to his long legacy in Earth Wind & Fire, and a range of great solo records too – but there's really something different, and something special taking place here – as Bailey pushes both his vocal range and sense of songform, working through music by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Oscar Brown Jr, and even the Talking Heads – while also turning in some great songs of his own, co-penned with some of the album's collaborators. The instrumentation is served up by a dream group of jazz talents – Kamasi Washington on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, Robert Glasper and Chick Corea on keyboards, Steve Wilson on saxes and flute, Lionel Loueke on guitar, and Christian McBride on bass – and although the record features guest vocals from Bilal and Casey Benjamin, it's Bailey's work that's the real main attraction. Titles include "We're A Winner", "Stairway To The Stars", "Just To Keep Your Satisfied", "Once In A Lifetime", "Billy Jack", "You're Everything", "Brooklyn Blues", "Sacred Sounds", and "Love Will Find A Way". Edikanfo Super African BandPace Setters ... CD
EG/Glitterbeat (Germany), 1981. New Copy ... $15.99
A classic album from this great group from Ghana – one that probably got more exposure than usual, thanks to the fact that they were taken under the wing of Brian Eno, who produced the album, in a tradition that would stretch back to Ginger Baker's work with Fela! The group have a great sound here – bold, fast-moving rhythms – with elements in Eno's production that almost recall his work with the Talking Heads – especially his way of bringing out the most robust elements in the basslines and percussion! The whole thing is done with a great balance – nicely respectful, but also with a slight updating of the sonic quality – yet never in a way that's got the more commercial inclinations of the world music boom to come. There's some cool moogy moments at time – almost bursting out of the mix in the way that Eno's electronics would pepper some of his early work with Roxy Music – and titles include "Gbenta", "Something Lefeh-O", "Blinking Eyes", and "Moonlight Africa". Brian Eno & David ByrneMy Life In The Bush Of Ghosts ... LP
Sire, 1981. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A groundbreaking collaboration between Brian Eno & David Byrne – recorded with a spare, stripped down love of electronics and found sound samples – in a mode that would have a huge influence on countless records to come! Part of the set resonates with the quirky grooves found in Byrne's early Talking Heads records – but the overall sound is much more stark than that work, and is characterized by key found vocals and odd ethnic bits that really set the tone for each new tune. Eno's influence is felt strongly in the simplicity of the tracks, and in the darkly resonant production modes – that classic Eno touch used here before it became a bit too trademark, in a way that could still make a record like this sound great, even when coming from major label sources! A key force in shaping countless genres to come in the next 25 years – with great tracks that include "America Is Waiting", 'Regiment", "The Jezebel Spirit", "Qu'ran", "Moonlight In Glory", "A Secret Life", "Come With Us", and "Mountain Of Needles". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing, including "Qu'Ran". NOTE – Cover is stained at the bottom, with some stuck-on paper on back.)

KlammAfrica Roja ... LP
Klamm/Wah Wah (Spain), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A really unusual group from an early 80s Spanish group – one who were born into more progressive territory in the 70s, but who also discovered more new wave experimentation and post-punk along the way to making this unique album from 1983! If we're honest, we'll say that there's a lot of the Adrian Belew-era King Crimson sound going on here – with really well-shaped basslines and guitar parts that are a sonic as they are melodic – all served up in a mix of different styles that would also maybe be at home on an album by Phil Manzanera! By that last reference, we're saying there's some surprising funky currents in the mix – not funk per se, but that post-Talking Heads use of basslines and rhythms. Titles include "The Past Is Frozen", "Billy's Back", "Estados Alterados", "Fluide", "Tam Mulat", "Nuevo Orden", "La Caja Negra", and "Kabul". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Staple SingersStaple Singers (1985) ... LP
Portrait, 1985. Very Good ... $0.99
The Staple Singers in a direction none would have guessed a decade before – a half-pop, half-arty approach to the dancefloor – served up in a surprisingly nice batch of jaunty tunes! The approach here mixes electric rhythms with the deeper soul vocals of the group – often putting Mavis in the lead, supported by the production and arrangements of Mike Piccirillo and Gary Goetzman, who'd first launched the group in this direction with their efforts on a few tracks on the previous record. As on that one, one of the best numbers here is a Talking Heads cover – "Life During Wartime" – and David Byrne also guests on guitar on another track. The sound's a bit slick, but it works really well for them! Other tracks include "Are You Ready", "We Stand", "Reason To Love", "Start Walking", and "Love Works In Strange Ways". ✨✧ Tom Tom ClubTom Tom Club (yellow & red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Sire/Real Gone, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The first album by The Tom Tom Club – a group that started out as a side project by Talking Heads members Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz – but which went onto have a surprising life of its own! Like the Talking Heads at the start of the 80s, Tom Tom Club were very open to pulling together rhythms from the soulful underground – bits of Caribbean influence and certainly some sounds from hip hop too – but used in these cool sing-songy tunes that also had ties to the same New York underground scene that gave the world ESG and Liquid Liquid! Yet there's also a nicely complex set of textures, too – thanks to work on the record by Adrian Belew and Steve Stanley – both of whom can balance out funky elements and more interesting textures. The record took off immediately with the track "Genius Of Love" – inspired by hip hop, and respected by that scene too – as was the album's classic "Wordy Rappinghood". The whole thing's great – an excellent document of the moment, but more timeless too – and other titles include "L'Elephant", "As Above So Below", "On On On On", "Lorelei", and "Booming & Zooming".
