Tabansi Studio BandTabansi Studio Band Vol 3 – Wakar Alhazai Kano (180 gram pressing) ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 29.99
Fantastic longform grooves from the Tabansi Studio Band – a cool combo who worked to support Nigerian artists on the Tabansi label, but who have a sound here that's very much their own! These tracks are a lot wilder and more freewheeling than any of the group's music behind a singer – and although there's some vocalizations on the record, the main focus is in the ever-shifting, always-groovy rhythms – and the brilliant mix of guitar, basslines, and sax parts that criss-cross the tunes! Most numbers are around the 15 minute mark, but build up in ways that are very different than more familiar Afro Funk – and titles include "Kama Sofoa", "Aka Ji Ego Ga Anu Nwam", "Wakar Alhazai", and "Lokoel Azumi Ta Wuce". ✨✧ Ondigui & Bota Tabansi InternationalEwondo Rhythm ... CD
Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great combination of Congo grooves and Nigerian 70s – served up here by vocalist Ondigui and his Bota Tabansi ensemble! Ondigui already has a fantastic sound himself – this vocal range and ability to inflect his notes that has the singer cascading up and down the spectrum – in ways that really explode when the lively rhythms of the group come into play – lots of romping percussion, often influenced by Cuban modes – colored in with these bright guitar lines that bubble and glisten throughout the tunes! Titles include "Longe La Wenge", "Wonderful For Ashawo", "Meveg", "Mude Dzam", and "Beza Bakili Ma Nyon". CD

✨✧ VariousTabansi Records Sampler ... CD
Tabansi/BBE (UK), 1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A nicely-done overview of the Tabansi Records label – an important imprint in Nigeria during the 80s, and a company who really helped change up the groove for a whole new generation! Tabansi had a pretty wide range of styles in their catalog, but that also gave the label a way to merge things together at times – often criss-crossing electro soul with highlife, boogie funk with acoustic elements, and lots more unusual hybrids that have made their records stand out from the pack! The BBE label have been doing a great job with Tabansi reissues, and this set brings together some of the best tracks from that series, plus a few more – 13 titles that include "Akalaka" by Victor Chukwu, "Make You No Mind" by Ebo Taylor, "Zeal Anata" by Zeal Onyia, "Love Vibration" by Nkono Teles, "Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo" by Ojo Balingo, "Looking Out For You" by The Mandators, "You're My Solution" by Eric Kol, "Thina Dekula" by Lumingu Puati, "Super Star" by Tony Sarfo & His Funki Afrobisi, and "For The Love Of Money" by Zack & Geebah. Ojo BalingoAfrotunes – Best of Juju Vol 2 – Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo ... CD
Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Excellent sounds from Ojo Balingo – a Nigerian juju artist from the same stretch as King Sunny Ade – but one whose music is much more obscure to audiences on this side of the Atlantic! Balingo's group here has the loose, spontaneous vibe that characterizes juju at its best – this real sense of jamming, especially in the criss-crossing of the percussion, which is tremendous throughout – a real driving force of the music, and exploding with all these melodic elements as much as rhythmic ones – so much so, that the talking between the drums speaks volumes, even before the vocals come into the mix. The whole thing's a masterpiece of creative percussion, mixed with other elements that creep in a bit more strongly on side two – and titles include "Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo", "Ayo Igbala Ni Mofe, "Igbe Eiye Oloburo", "Jide Babaloa & Bayo Babalola", and "Ile Aiye Ile Ese Ile Aiye Ogun". Dytomite Starlite BandDytomite Starlite Band of Ghana ... CD
Tabansi/BBE (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
That's "Dytomite", not "dynamite" – and don't ask us what it means, either! But we can tell you that the set's a great bit of highlife, recorded with a lean, breezy feel – a bit more heft than just the duo pictured on the cover – with criss-crossing guitars, really wonderful rhythms, and dipping basslines that provide this bubbling sense of energy that really sends home the groove! One track has this cool moogy sound that's very unique, and the rest sparkle with a great sense of warmth that's only expanded with the vocal interplay in the lead. Titles include "Amanfoo", "Nya Asem Hwe", "Anomakoro", "Obaa Mansa", and "Meye Meho Ayie". CD

Eze Nri Royal DrummersEze Nri Royal Drummers Vol 1 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 28.99
One of the most rootsy albums ever issued by the Tabansi label – a set that's quite different than their more familiar electric modes, and which features very raw, tribal sounds by a percussion group that is tied to the Niri Kingdom in Nigeria! As you'd guess from their name, the ensemble is heavy on drums, but also uses these very spare, simple wood flutes – in a mode that usually varies back and forth in a cycle of notes, which creates a very hypnotic sound along with the percussion – almost like some of the early albums by Moondog. There's also vocals, too – but these seem more intended to encourage the instrumentation, almost calls to action. Titles include "Eze Na Aga", "Nrijifor II", "Ochawaligwe", Ufie Nnam Eze I", and "Okanga Eze Niri II". LP, Vinyl record album

Tight Nigerian boogie from Ben Jagga – done with a lean groove that really represents the change in styles during the 80s, while still holding onto modes that reference some of the funk from before! Ben's got this bright style of singing, and at times the record almost has a Caribbean vibe – that sort of special, sunny style that we love in some of the Caribe disco singles from the period – mixed with more of the mainstream R&B modes that were coming out of Lagos, particularly those that have a stronger electro soul influence. Titles include "You Are My Reason For Living", "Aliyenju", "Hold On Pretty Woman", "Just Forgive & Forget", and "Jack & Jill". LP, Vinyl record album

Zeal OnyiaTrumpet King Zeal Onyia Returns ... CD
Tabansi/BBE (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $9.99 18.98
Zeal Onyia is definitely the trumpet king here – at least of the Nigerian scene in which this album was recorded – as he blows strong solos throughout, and really brings a lot of jazz-based energy to the highlife rhythms! The use of trumpet in a smaller combo mode is really great – and while most tracks groove like familiar Nigerian material from the time, the sense of solo work really sets things apart – and makes the whole thing a fantastic blend of highlife and jazz, at a level that maybe beats any other record we can think of! There's plenty of Nigerian music from this time that gets a nod, but this set is definitely one of the best – fantastic rhythms and really soulful trumpet lines – on titles that include "Egwu Olili", "Zeal Eze Opi", "Zeal Anata", and "Eluem Anaba". PMG/Tabansi (Austria), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
The Stormers are a group who rose from the ashes of the legendary Lagos funk combo Aktion – and they step out here with a really storming sound that definitely earns them their name! The groove is funk of the tightest form possible – especially for the start of the 80s – and the four piece combo seem to take all the best elements from the bigger American funk ensembles, then fuse them down to a wickedly sharp core – with basslines, guitar, and keyboards all working with an amazing edge – and none of the too-commercial elements that might have been showing up on the US scene at the time! Vocals are in English – which should have made this record a crossover international funk hit – and the whole thing can kick the ass of just about any early 80s funk album on the planet. Titles include "Sexy Woman", "Atlantic Breeze", "Be A Lover", "Super D Jay", and "Love Or Money". LP, Vinyl record album

Sweet synth soul from 80s Nigeria – a set that definitely shows the evolution of that country's sound in the decade after the rise of Afro Funk – and a record that also delivers plenty of the beats promised in the title! There's lots of elements here borrowed from electro – drum machine rhythms, tight basslines, and plenty of keyboards – all percolating nicely next to the rougher-edged vocals of Nkono Teles – a singer who does an equally great job of delivering a catchy hit and a more seductive number. Touches of highlife filter into the mix here and there, but still in an electro-tinged way – and titles include "Be My Lady", "Party Beats", "Time For Fun", "Love Vibration", and "Highlife Makossa". Catchy, clubby grooves from the team of Zack Roberts and Gebah Swary – a Liberian duo who issued this very catchy record at the start of the 80s! The pair have an 80s look on the cover, and definitely bring that into their music too – with early electro touches used in very spare ways, next to the sort of more club-styled Afro funky sounds that were really coming into play on the west African scene. Titles include their hits "No Peace No Love" and "For The Love Of Money" – the latter of which is not a cover of the O'Jays song, but instead their own great groover – plus "Take It Easy", "Rock To The Music", "Home Is Home", and "My Luck Will Shine". Nigerian singer Eric Kol reclines on the cover like a hip American soul singer of the early 80s – and he sounds a fair bit like one too, given the mix of boogie styles on the album! The record's got that lean vibe from the time when Nigerian groups really trimmed down their style from the bigger ensembles of the 70s – and keyboards figure in as strongly as guitar and percussion, the latter of which also feels to be sometimes programmed, sometimes live! Kol still gets some horns in the mix too, but the main focus is on the groove and his vocals – which are recorded with a cool, compressed quality that nicely hugs the rhythms. Titles include "Rain In My Heart", "Let The Music Play", 'It's Gonna Be Bright", "You're My Solution", "I Will Sing A Song", "Where The Wind Blows", and "Let Your Love Rule My World". CD
