Tabansi Studio BandTabansi Studio Band Vol 3 – Wakar Alhazai Kano ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Fantastic longform grooves from the Tabansi Studio Band – a cool combo who worked to support Nigerian artists on the Tabansi label, but who have a sound here that's very much their own! These tracks are a lot wilder and more freewheeling than any of the group's music behind a singer – and although there's some vocalizations on the record, the main focus is in the ever-shifting, always-groovy rhythms – and the brilliant mix of guitar, basslines, and sax parts that criss-cross the tunes! Most numbers are around the 15 minute mark, but build up in ways that are very different than more familiar Afro Funk – and titles include "Kama Sofoa", "Aka Ji Ego Ga Anu Nwam", "Wakar Alhazai", and "Lokoel Azumi Ta Wuce". Victor Chukwu/The Black IrokosAkalaka/The Power ... CD
Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Two rare albums from Uncle Victor Chukwu – a hell of a guitarist, and the driving force behind both of these Nigerian gems from the late 70s! Akalaka is a record that's maybe higlife in outward appearance, but which has a very different quality overall – in part because the guitar work from Victor Chukwu is so sharp and searing, there's often a bit more edge on some of the tunes than the lighter, brighter notes you'd usually associate with the genre! Plus, the vocals have this nicely echoey vibe – ringing out with a quality that's equally great, whether the lyrics are in English or Igbo – on long titles that include "Akalaka", "Born Throw Away", "Ogbu Mmadu", and "Nwanne Bu Nwanne". Next up is an album that Victor Chukwu did with the Black Irokos group – a set that's even more striking, and almost experimental at times – with all these odd elements played right down near the bottom of the guitar strings, which are then echoed out with effects that make them sound very cool next to the percussion! There's a bit of horns in the mix, but the guitar and offbeat vocals are the main appeal – on the long tracks "Onwu Uwa", "Anya Ukwu", and "Oge Chukwu Ka Nma". CD

Eze Nri Royal DrummersEze Nri Royal Drummers Vol 1 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 28.99
One of the most rootsy albums ever issued by the Tabansi label – a set that's quite different than their more familiar electric modes, and which features very raw, tribal sounds by a percussion group that is tied to the Niri Kingdom in Nigeria! As you'd guess from their name, the ensemble is heavy on drums, but also uses these very spare, simple wood flutes – in a mode that usually varies back and forth in a cycle of notes, which creates a very hypnotic sound along with the percussion – almost like some of the early albums by Moondog. There's also vocals, too – but these seem more intended to encourage the instrumentation, almost calls to action. Titles include "Eze Na Aga", "Nrijifor II", "Ochawaligwe", Ufie Nnam Eze I", and "Okanga Eze Niri II". LP, Vinyl record album

Nkem Njoku & Ozzobia BrothersOzzobia Special ... CD
Tabansi/BBE (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A nice mix of older highlife modes with some of the more electric touches of the 80s – still produced with a nice lean vibe overall, and plenty of live energy that leaps between the riffing guitar, percussion, and horns – all augmented by these nicely quirky lines on keyboards! The group sports the great Ray Stephen Oche on trumpet and John Kante on guitars – and Nkem Njoku stands up strongly with vocals in the lead, really shining with rhythmic vocals that are fit nicely to the groove – at a level that makes us wonder why this is his only album as a leader. Titles include "Ozobia Special", "Ofu Obi", "Osula Nwa Eje Ubi Eje Oba", "Ije Eluwa", "Akwa Obi", and "Egwu Oyoliba". CD

StormersLovers Song (with bonus download) ... LP
PMG/Tabansi (Austria), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
The Stormers are a group who rose from the ashes of the legendary Lagos funk combo Aktion – and they step out here with a really storming sound that definitely earns them their name! The groove is funk of the tightest form possible – especially for the start of the 80s – and the four piece combo seem to take all the best elements from the bigger American funk ensembles, then fuse them down to a wickedly sharp core – with basslines, guitar, and keyboards all working with an amazing edge – and none of the too-commercial elements that might have been showing up on the US scene at the time! Vocals are in English – which should have made this record a crossover international funk hit – and the whole thing can kick the ass of just about any early 80s funk album on the planet. Titles include "Sexy Woman", "Atlantic Breeze", "Be A Lover", "Super D Jay", and "Love Or Money". LP, Vinyl record album

Ebo TaylorPalaver ... CD
Tabansi/BBE (UK), 1980. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
A never-issued session from the legendary Ebo Taylor – recorded right at a time when Taylor was really hitting on all burners! The sessions were done for the Nigerian Tabansi label, but feature Ebo's touring band from Ghana – a tight combo whose crackling rhythms are perfect for his uniquely jazzy take on the highlife style – bubbling and burning with fantastic guitar lines throughout, and topped with lyrics that are maybe even a bit more political than usual! Titles include "Help Africa", "Palaver", "Make You No Mind", "Abebrese", and "Nyame Dadaw". CD

Zack & GeebahFor The Love Of Money (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tabansi/BBE (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 26.98
Catchy, clubby grooves from the team of Zack Roberts and Gebah Swary – a Liberian duo who issued this very catchy record at the start of the 80s! The pair have an 80s look on the cover, and definitely bring that into their music too – with early electro touches used in very spare ways, next to the sort of more club-styled Afro funky sounds that were really coming into play on the west African scene. Titles include their hits "No Peace No Love" and "For The Love Of Money" – the latter of which is not a cover of the O'Jays song, but instead their own great groover – plus "Take It Easy", "Rock To The Music", "Home Is Home", and "My Luck Will Shine". Beautifully gliding sounds from Lumingu "Zorro" Puati – a guitarist who glides along here on rhythms inspired by the Caribbean side of the Colombian music spectrum – but who gives the record a definite West African twist! All the album's four tracks are nice and long, and feature lead vocals from Tina Maya Eric – a singer who seems able to change his tone somewhat from track to track, making a nice sort of variety that's echoed by the rhythms – and which is always topped by these warmly ringing guitar lines from Zorro! Titles include "Mosese", "Dadavi Pitie", "Tshina Dekula", and "Meaculpa Mawewe". CD

✨✧ Ojo BalingoAfrotunes – Best of Juju Vol 2 – Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Excellent sounds from Ojo Balingo – a Nigerian juju artist from the same stretch as King Sunny Ade – but one whose music is much more obscure to audiences on this side of the Atlantic! Balingo's group here has the loose, spontaneous vibe that characterizes juju at its best – this real sense of jamming, especially in the criss-crossing of the percussion, which is tremendous throughout – a real driving force of the music, and exploding with all these melodic elements as much as rhythmic ones – so much so, that the talking between the drums speaks volumes, even before the vocals come into the mix. The whole thing's a masterpiece of creative percussion, mixed with other elements that creep in a bit more strongly on side two – and titles include "Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo", "Ayo Igbala Ni Mofe, "Igbe Eiye Oloburo", "Jide Babaloa & Bayo Babalola", and "Ile Aiye Ile Ese Ile Aiye Ogun". ✨✧ Zeal OnyiaTrumpet King Zeal Onyia Returns (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tabansi/BBE (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Zeal Onyia is definitely the trumpet king here – at least of the Nigerian scene in which this album was recorded – as he blows strong solos throughout, and really brings a lot of jazz-based energy to the highlife rhythms! The use of trumpet in a smaller combo mode is really great – and while most tracks groove like familiar Nigerian material from the time, the sense of solo work really sets things apart – and makes the whole thing a fantastic blend of highlife and jazz, at a level that maybe beats any other record we can think of! There's plenty of Nigerian music from this time that gets a nod, but this set is definitely one of the best – fantastic rhythms and really soulful trumpet lines – on titles that include "Egwu Olili", "Zeal Eze Opi", "Zeal Anata", and "Eluem Anaba".
