Johnny Guitar WatsonHot Just Like TNT - The Best Of His Early Years ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
The title's no lie – as the young Johnny Guitar Watson comes on here with the force of dynamite – maybe even more hard and heavy than during his bigger years of the 70s! Johnny's more of an R&B singer here – and a powerhouse, too – not just a hell of vocalist, but an excellent guitarist with a very sinister groove – a sharp burst of sound that's a bit like Pee Wee Crayton, but with a more focused punch that really sets fire to the tunes – even when Watson's just using his instrument to underscore his vocals! The cuts are all very early material by Johnny – issued by the RPM, Modern, and Keen labels – including a few unissued numbers that Watson recorded with Johnny Otis – and the package also includes a few tracks with female singers – either Jeannie Barnes, Devonia Williams, or Cordella De Milo. As always with Ace, the presentation is wonderful – way better sound and notes than any of those public domain packages – and titles that include "Ruben", "Three Hours Past Midnight", "Hot Little Mama", "Lonely Girl", "She Moves Me", "Love Me Baby", "Come On Baby", "Gangster Of Love", "One Room Country Shack", "Someone Cares For Me", "Those Lonely Lonely Nights", "Don't Touch Me", and "Telephone Boogie". Thrill Jockey, 1998. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Tortoise's third album, and pretty remarkable creative leap for the inventive Chicago ensemble – now with the great guitarist Jeff Parker in the fold! Like the earlier records, Like their earlier records, TNT features an incredibly haunting mix of percussion, electronics, and jazz-oriented instrumentation – put together with an approach that's even more sophisticated than earlier releases. That said, the guitar makes a huge difference – and there's a lot of guest players in the mix, including horns and strings. Definitely one of their best ever! Titles include "Swing From The Gutters", "Four Day Interval", "Jetty", "Everglade", and "The Equator". LP, Vinyl record album

Art Turk BurtonAncestral Spirits ... CD
TNT, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99
A fantastic record from Chicago percussionist Art Turk Burton – a longstanding member of the AACM, but one who's been so busy teaching and helping out on the local scene, he's never gotten the international fame he deserves! Art works here in a large group that mixes contemporary modes and percussion traditions, vocal passages and instrumental lines – all with this sense of knowledge and righteousness that really tie Burton back to previous years in the Chicago scene! The great Ari Brown is in the set on tenor and soprano sax, and Edwin Daugherty is on alto and soprano – and Maggie Brown sings on the set for a bit, too – evoking the spirit of her father Oscar Brown Jr, who would have loved the vibe of the record. The group's also got the great Yosef Ben Israel on bass, keeping a strong groove amidst the other percussion and drums – and Eddie Beard plays piano and organ in the group. The title track "Ancestral Spirits" is a tribute to Phil Cohran and Muhal Richard Abrams – and other titles include great extrapolations on "All Blues", "Listen Here", "Soul Drummer", "Summertime", "Night In Tunisia", and "Killer Joe". Randy CarlosHot Cha Cha ... LP
Fiesta, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $19.99
Great material from the time when the Fiesta label practically had the market cornered on Cha Cha's! Randy Carlos and his group lay down some nicely off-beat cha cha cha tracks, some with an electric guitar in the mix, which gives a sinister sound to some of the rhythms – in a way that we really like! The titles should give you an idea of the unconventional bent of the record – as they include "Ping Pong Merengue" (which actually has a ping pong ball sound in the middle!), "Satellite USA", "Makin Cha Cha", "Boomerang", "Light Green", and "TNT Cha Cha" LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has some seam splitting.)

Jimmy McGriffStump Juice ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $16.99
Massively funky – and one of Jimmy McGriff's best albums for the Groove Merchant label! The album's follows strongly on the mode of Jimmy's classic Worm album – also produced by Sonny Lester, issued slightly before on the Solid State label. The set's got that stripped-down, hard-n-funky sound that Jimmy used on his best albums from the time – rhythm crackling at the bottom with a really sharp edge, and a lean, clean keyboards soaring over the top in some really mighty solo work – somewhere between James Brown funk and early 70s soundtracks! The drums are great, the tunes are tasty, and Jimmy plays both keyboards and Hammond – with a groove that's always outta site! Titles include the funky "Stump Juice", plus "TNT", "Stretch Me Out", "Pisces", "Cumayon", and "Purple Onion". CD
(Part of the Groove Merchant Mo' Groovy Collection!)

VariousTokyo Nights – Female J-Pop Boogie Funk 1981 to 1988 ... LP
Cultures Of Soul, 1980s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $23.99 27.98
A great look at the bright world of female soul in Japan during the 80s – a time when the nation was hitting some of its greatest heights of the postwar years – and was coming up with a magical musical groove to follow! While disco reigned in American clubs in the late 70s, the style really took off in Tokyo during the following decade – maybe mixed a bit with European and 80s club styles, but still unabashedly as upbeat and bubbling as American work of previous years – all to showcase a range of female singers whose style really matches the groove! The music takes off a bit from that shift into soul by Japanese jazz singers in the 70s – but is much farther than that mode overall, especially once the beats and keyboards get going. The package does a great job of being faithful to this legacy – and includes notes on each song and artist, along with album covers too. Titles include "Wanna Kiss" by Hitomi Tohyama, "Dancin" by Junko Ohashi, "Dress Down" by Kaoru Akimoto, "I'm In Love" by Aru Takamura, "Broken Eyes" by Mariko Tone, "TNT" by Rie Murakami, "Love Is A Work Of Mind" by Ra Mu, "Mystical Composer" by Kikuchi Momoko, and "Sky Restaurant" by Yumi Seino. ✨✧ TortoiseIt's All Around You (with download) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2004. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Wow, this is SO not the Tortoise that first set the underground aflame in the early 90s – the group has evolved and opened up in ways we never would have expected. With It's All Around You it's emerged with an airy, open, stargazing set of tracks that resemble the languid atmosphere of Tangerine Dream as much as they do early post rock! Gone, for the most part from early Tortoise is that strong, rubbery electric bass groove and tightly thudding live drum sound. It's All Around You retains the bright vibes and sputtering electronics of the TNT album, and the out front, almost rock & roll guitar lines of the Standards album – and adds an ever present, ambient synthesizer bubble of sound to surround the thing. It's all so catchy, too, and almost sunny. If Tortoise hasn't really broken any new ground this time, it's only because they're the ones who broke it in the first place. Tracks include "It's All Around You", The Lithium Shifts", "Crest", "Stretch", "Dot/Eyes", "By Dawn", "Five Too Many" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
