Tom DawesElusive – The Tom Dawes Jingle Workshop ... CD
Modern Harmonic, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A fantastic array of really cool songs – all written and recorded by Tom Dawes of The Cyrkle – as part of a big career as a jingle writer after his group cut a famous theme song for 7 Up! The music here is great – work from a time when jingles for TV and radio ads were like mini songs in and of themselves – often as catchy as anything on the charts, if not more so – so that the tunes you'd hear for a few short seconds would stick in your head all day long! If you dig sunshine pop, there's plenty to love here – and remember that the great Roger Nichols also gave the world a wonderful tune that was originally designed as a jingle. Some of the tracks here never made it to the TV screen, others are classics – and the set includes songs written for Windex, GI Joe, Alka Seltzer, Calgon, Stridex, Murine, Hartford Insurance, Thom McCann, Life Savers, Timex, Ford, and many others. Kenny DorhamRound About Midnight At The Cafe Bohemia – Complete (non-RVG edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1956. Used 2 CDs ... $18.99
One of our favorite albums ever by Kenny Dorham – and a really different session than his usual studio work! The album captures Kenny in a relaxed live setting, with a bit more dirt on his horn than usual – blowing with a tone that's much more open and a bit less poised – in the company of a really great group that features JR Monterose on tenor, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Bobby Timmons on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Arthur Edgehill on drums. The CD features a total of 17 tracks in all – titles from the original LP, plus rare extra material, and some bonus alternate takes – all remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. Titles include Dorham's boppish "Mexico City", plus other enigmatic compositions like "Monaco" and "Hill's Edge", and tracks that include "Round Midnight", "Riffin", "My Heart Stood Still", and "NY Theme". DriftersUp On The Roof – The Best Of The Drifters ... LP
Atlantic, Late 50s/Early 60s. Very Good ... $9.99
Seminal work from the post-Clyde McPhatter version of The Drifters – a sublime batch of singles that really showcase all that's great from the second chapter of the group! The set's way more than a "best of" – as it was the only full album to feature most of these cuts – and together, they really illustrate the excellent changes the group had made – including their alliance with the Leiber & Stoller team, and their great use of exotic rhythms and instrumentation! Some cuts still echo earlier R&B, while others have plenty of cool Latin elements in the mix too – a rhythm that really works well for the vocals of Ben E King's lead with the group. Titles include "Sweets For My Sweet", "There Goes My Baby", "Stranger On The Shore", "Save The Last Dance For Me", "When My Little Girl Is Smiling", "Ruby Baby", "True Love True Love","Another Night With The Boys", "What To Do", "Mexican Divorce", and "Room Full Of Tears". A wonderful coffee that lives up to its name – roasted especially by the folks at Chicago's Dark Matter for our coffee drinking needs here at Dusty Groove! The base component to this blend is a coffee from Mexico and grown and milled at a cooperative called El Eden – very unique for a Mexican coffee, with a flavor profile that includes blueberry, banana, and baker's chocolate to give the blend a bit of depth. This base is then highlighted with a coffee from Guatemala grown by Finca San Jeronimo Miramar – which adds both body, and some lighter notes of toffee and praline – to give the whole thing a wonderful sun-drenched finish! ✨✧ Ergo SumMexico (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Musea/Lion, 1971. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Extremely heady work from the French scene of the early 70s – and hardly the Latin Rock album you might guess from the title! Ergo Sum have a sound that's as contemplative as their name – a slow-building, almost brooding blend of jamming, jazzy work on flute, Fender Rhodes, organ, guitar, violin, bass, and drums – all topped by the distinctive vocals of Lionel Ledissez, who's got a raspy, rough-edged appeal that almost sounds like Cat Stevens gone to seed! The lyrics are all in English, which adds to the appeal of the record – and the flute and keyboard parts are handled by Jean Guerin. Titles include "Night Road", "John's Nightmare", "Faces", "Second Rebirth", and "Albdion Impressions". As with all Lion reissues, the production is wonderful – lots of notes and photos on the music, plus bonus tracks that include "Mexico (inst)", "It's Me", "Tijuana", and "All's So Comic". CD

A masterpiece of soundtrack scoring from Jerry Fielding – done for Sam Peckinpah's classic Mexico-set thriller with Warren Oates in the lead! Those other two names are more than enough to get us to needle drop the record – but it's Fielding's music that really captivates us – deep orchestrations that we never would have expected in his work the decade before – handled by Lennie Niehaus and Greg McRitchie, both of whom really unlock these channels of rich tonal colors in the music – while Jerry's score serves up all these nice changes throughout, including some key action moments, a touch of solo guitar flavoring, and other bold elements that really make the record leap from the speakers the way the film leaps off the screen. Titles include "Bring It To Me", "Gathering Information", "Marriage Plans", "Bennie's Revenge", "Killer's Rhapsody", "Requiem For Alfredo", "El Jefe", and "Road Kill". UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, 2012. New Copy ... $6.99 19.95
A fascinating look at the world of Mexican music in the 20th Century – put together in collaboration with Arhoolie Records, the label that's done plenty to reissue the music over the years! The book begins with the huge archive of recordings by the label's founder, Chris Strachwitz – then takes off in a number of different streams – providing historical context, critical evaluation, and even some discographical details – in the form of various lists and sections of music. The book looks at some key styles too – including corridos and mariachi, traced both through Mexican recordings, and US singles by Mexican-Americans – and the whole thing is only the tip of the iceberg, in relation to the 40,000 recordings that have been digitized by the University Of California Library as part of the project. Still, there's plenty here to get you started – a huge amount of information that's even more inspirational than some of Arhoolie's great reissues over the years – in an oversized book that's 226 pages, softcover, with many black and white images too. Waylon JenningsLove Of The Common People/Hangin On/Only The Greatest/Jewels ... CD
RCA/Morello (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
A quadruple package of late 60s albums from Waylon Jennings – served up here in a single set! First up is Love Of The Common People – a tremendous late 60s album from Waylon Jennings – a set that really has the singer finally finding his groove, and working that amazing vocal style towards the kind of material that would soon help him become the stuff of legend! At some level, it could be said that there are currents of folk on the album – at least in the choice of some of the tracks, including the title cut – but throughout, Waylon Jennings has a way of turning things towards the darker side of the spectrum, and delivering things in a way that goes way beyond familiar RCA Nashville territory! Titles include "Money Cannot Make The Man", "I Tremble For You", "If The Shoe Fits", "The Road", "Love Of The Common People", "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away", and "Taos New Mexico". Hangin On has Jennings emerging as a singer with a depth that goes way beyond some of the more pop-oriented country acts handled by Chet Atkins on RCA, with a way of transforming tunes and really making them feel like they were all his own! Jennings did write a few of the words on the set, but most of the music is by well-chosen contemporary songwriters – spreading out with a slightly larger scope than some of the other RCA acts might handle – which might be an indication of the larger audience that Jennings would soon reach with his music! Titles include "The Crowd", "The Chokin' Kind", "I Fall In Love So Easily", "How Long Have You Been There", "Julie", "Looking At A Heart That Needs A Home", "Woman Don't You Ever Laugh At Me", and "Lock Stock & Teardrops". Only The Greatest is a damn near perfect batch of top notch honky tonk numbers from the late 60s! Waylon's distinctive voice works its magic on a bunch of great tunes, including honky tonk classics like "Only Daddy That'll Walk That Line", Harlan Howard's "California Sunshine", plus some song choices that steer towards countrypolitan, pop and folk, but really brought into Waylon's world regardless, via his incredible voice, which is at peak power at this point. Other titles include "Weakness In A Man", "Sorry (Breaks A Good Man Down)", "Christina", "Kentucky Woman", "Long Gone", "Wave Goodbye To Me", and "Too Far Gone". Jewels is a record with a very well-put title – as the set's filled with late 60s jewels by the amazing Waylon Jennings – tracks from a time before the singer was hitting as big as he should have, but which are perfect for digging out and loving again as the years go on! Jennings has an edge and darkness here that's so different than so many of his contemporaries – a quality that maybe resonates with Johnny Cash's best moments, but which has a focus here that avoids some of the mis-steps that could often be more frequent on Johnny's studio albums at the time – really rock-solid presentation throughout, as Waylon takes on tunes by Harlan Howard, Merle Haggard, and Dallas Frazier – and throws his own tune into the mix too. Titles include "New York City RFD", "Six Strings Away", "How Much Rain Can One Man Stand", "Today I Started Loving You Again", "If You Were Mine To Lose", and "See You Around. CD

KhruangbinCon Todo El Mundo (with bonus download) ... LP
Dead Oceans, 2018. New Copy ... $20.99 21.99
A funky combo, but one with a real difference – as they seem to find whole new corners of the globe in which to work their magic – almost an imagined space of cultural criss-crossing, all set to some mighty funky bass and drums! The core element here is the guitar – which echoes exotic modes that seem to move from Mexican folk, to contemporary Tuareg sounds, and even a bit of southwest guitar instrumental echo – but all in ways that are very fresh and different, and which also sound quite unusual compared to the usual use of guitar in a funky combo! There's a bit of vocals on the album, but really the guitar is the main "voice" – and one that speaks volumes – on titles that include "Lady & Man", "Como Te Quiero", "Shades Of Man", "Maria Tambien", "Como Me Quieres", "A Hymn", and "Rules". A wonderfully hard-to-categorize album from the start of the 80s – a Mexican record that mixes folkloric roots with electronic instrumentation – but all in a way that sounds much more ancient than you'd expect for the time! The fusion of modes here is wonderful – almost at a level that reminds us of some of the Graeme Revell experiments of the mid 80s, or some of the more organic electronics from Japan – as the whole thing feels a lot more acoustic than electric, with a wonderful blend of woody sounds, percussion, and other great elements. A bright, upbeat and sunny orch pop effort from the man who invented sunny orch pop – free of the dour, troubled undertow of his tortured masterpieces of the late 60s – and lets face it, we want the man healthy so that's a good thing! Brian Wilson composed and arranged with many of the collaborators from his latter day Smile triumph – with sweet odes to the love, southern Cali, and sunshine. The arrangements are sweeping and lovely, with rich but unfussy string arrangements, vibes, horns and keys – with poetic spoken narratives written by the one-and-only Van Dyke Parks. Titles include "That Lucky Old Sun", "Morning Beat", "Room With A View", "Good Kind Of Love", "Forever She'll Be My Surfer Girl", "Venice Beach", "Mexican Girl", "Cinco De May" and more. CD

✨✧ VariousPhil Spector – The Early Productions ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 60s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Kind of a cool Phil Spector "prequel" – one that brings together a few famous early hits, plus lots more productions for other artists that you may not already know about! Spector's lineage isn't exactly a secret – and even early work like this has been well documented in books on his music – yet this is the first time a compilation's ever done such a good job of bringing together such a wide variety of tracks, and not just a few famous ones! Phil's genius is already apparent at this point – but what's also nice is to hear how it's kind of interacting with other early 60s pop modes too – more conventional styles that are clearly the intended game plan for the songs, but which are often tweaked strongly by Spector in the studio. The notes do a great job of pointing out these highlights – and the package features 28 tracks that include "I Love How You Love Me" by The Paris Sisters, "When You Dance" by Billy Storm, "I'm So Happy" by The Ducanes, "Hey Memphis" by LaVern Baker, "The Basic Things" by The Top Notes, "You Said Goodbye" by The Teddy Bears, "Where Can You Be" by Tony & Joe, "Spanish Harlem" by Ben E King, "Nights Of Mexico" by Russell Byrd, "Bumbershoot" by Phil Harvey, "Every Breath I Take" by Gene Pitney, and "You Took Advantage Of Me" by The Blackwells. Maybe one of the most mindblowing sets ever put together by the Dust To Digital label – a set that follows on their long-running exploration of 78rpm music from around the globe, and one that presents all these rare tracks in a really incredible format! The set's got a box for the package, which contains a huge 184 page book that's filled with notes, images, and illustrations – a beautiful object in and of itself, which is then matched with 4CDs worth of recordings you'll never hear otherwise – sounds from the start of the 20th century all the way through the late 60s, working together to provide an alternate history of global sounds – all with a sensitivity for track selection that may well match the famous Harry Smith look at American recordings. There's a total of 100 tracks in all – music from Russia, Cuba, Mexico, Macedonia, Surniname, Romania, Morocco, Nigeria, and many other points from around the globe – mindblowing sounds in a really lavish package! And yes, the whole thing is crazy expensive – but if you tally the cost of tracking down the scratchy original 78s, you're getting a heck of a deal – especially with the box and book. CD

Caife/Honest Jons (UK), 1960s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really beautiful collection of music – and work from a scene that we've hardly heard from before – given that all these tracks were taken from the 60s catalog of the Caife Records label in Ecuador! The music is often an unusual hybrid of modes – older folkloric styles mixes with more contemporary expressions – often driven by an urban interest in the nation's traditions, which involve many different cultural strains spread out over its diverse terrain. Caife was an imprint that sought to capture music that might have fallen through the cracks otherwise – and in terms of sound and style, most of this work feels much older than what you might have heard coming from Colombia, Mexico, or Cuba in the 60s – with a fair bit of acoustic instrumentation, and often a strong current of sentiment, as is hinted at in the title. The package is a very well-done resurrection of this near-lost legacy – with a beautiful booklet of notes and rare images – including a shot of the hoarder's office in a high rise, where most of the tapes had been sitting for decades. Titles include "Sendero Del Dolor" by Segundo Bautista, "Ingratitud" by Hermanas Mendoza Suasti, "Cotopaxi" by Biluka Y Los Canibales, "Desesperacion" by Bentiez Y Valencia, "Lejos De Ti" by Los Tres Ases, "Vaca Lechera" by Conjunto Caife, "Pasional" by Lucho Munoz, "El Anacu De Mi Guambra" by Biluka Y Los Canibales, and "Ensonacion" by Los Inaquingas. A new take on the older chica groove – a slightly romping rhythm that's almost a South American take on Tex Mex modes! The sound here has a nicely old-style feel – despite contemporary origins of the recording – and instrumentation is heavy on keyboards, including Electravox, farfisa, and moog – used in rhythmic lines that are supported by work on guitar and lots of percussion. A few tracks have vocals, and others are instrumental – and all numbers have a haunting sort of feel. A really wild little album – featuring songs from the documentary about Dennis Hopper from the early 70s. The songs are mostly in a rootsy, country-ish mode – as you might guess from the participation of and title track by Gene Clark – although some of them also get a bit tripper at times. It's really a well-suited batch of songs that really give you the feel of a post-Easy Rider Dennis Hopper all bedraggled and tripped out – but it stands pretty strongly on its own as a cool kind of a counterculture country rock comp. Titles include "American Dreamer" and "Outlaw Song" by Gene Clark, "Easy Rider 1970" by Chris Sikelianos, "The Screaming Metaphysical Blues" and "Sun Moon & Stars" by John Buck Wilkin, "Hard Road To Mexico" by John Manning, and "Pass Me By" by Hello People. The long strange trip the Grateful Dead began with Warner Bros in the late 60s culminated in this concise, pretty darn solid attempt at an early Best Of, appropriately called Skeletons In The Closet! The Dead would never be best known for their studio recordings, but this really is a good reminder that the band wrote and recorded a lot of wonderful songs in their heyday that feel uniquely, distinctively Dead even in the 3 to 6 minute studio versions. It's a worthy reminder of that for eternal fans, and an even better gateway to Dead fandom for newcomers. ECM, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A completely solo album from Pat Metheny – but one that still sparkles with the same sort of energy as his fuller group sessions for ECM! At a point when Pat could be content to simply scrawl a few simple lines on the strings of his guitar, he instead does a great job of complicating things here – working with a bit of overdub to explode in fuller sounds that are totally great – played on acoustic and electric guitars, including 6, 12, and 15 stringed versions – as well as a bit of bass. Titles include "Hermitage", "Daybreak", "Sueno Con Mexico", "New Chautauqua", and "Country Poem". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sunny & The SunlinersMr Brown Eyed Soul Vol 2 ... CD
Big Crown, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A second fantastic tribute to the genius of Sunny Ozuna – the Texas singer who cut some amazing soul records back in the 60s, but often with a vibe that reflected his unique Tex-Mex origins too! Those qualities really come through here in this well-done assortment of tunes – tracks that have all the mellow, slow-stepping energy of sweet soul group material from the east coast scene of the late 60s – but which also have some unusual Texas elements too, even on familiar instruments like trumpet or organ, which often are tuned in slightly weird ways that really set these tunes apart from more conventional soul! Sunny's always in the lead, but often gets some great harmony support – and titles include a killer remake of "Sitting In The Park" – plus "If I Could See You Now", "Give Me Time", "Viva Mi Triestesa", "I Can Remember", "Runaway", "I've Never Found A Girl", "I'm No Stranger", and "Baby I Apologize". ✨✧ VenturesVentures Play Telstar – The Lonely Bull & Others/Ventures In Space ... CD
Dolton/EMI, 1962/1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
The Ventures Play Telstar was the Ventures ninth record and it offers the usual mix of covers of some of the most popular songs of the day. The guitar still leads as the main sound on these tracks but they do expand the instrumentation to include organ, trumpet, mandolins and harpsichord as well. They sing a little on some of the tracks but they mainly stay in the instrumental realm. Tracks include "Telstar", "The Lonely Bull", "Mexico", "Calcutta", "Apache", "Never On A Sunday", "Tequila", "Green Onions", "Let There Be Drums", and "Red River Rock". The Ventures In Space is a really wonderful idea – especially given that the quartet had so much energy in their guitars at this point, they could easily make it to the moon! The set's cooking with great little numbers that really keep with the space theme of the title – tracks like "One Step Beyond", "Twilight Zone", "The Fourth Dimension", "Moon Child", and "Solar Race" – all as captivating as they sound from the titles, and served up here with that sweet mix of guitar twang and jamming that made The Ventures so great back in the day! Le Smoke Disque, 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky stuff inspired by the deepest, funkiest Kool & The Gang work of the 70s – a set weighed heavily with real obscurities – with furiously grooving jazzy bits, grainy hard soul versions, steel band numbers and more – all massively funky in their unique strains of the sound! Much like the other comps in the Le Smoke Disque tributes to classic funk figures, the really dig deep – with material from rare regional funk singles, cover versions, and tribute tracks from regions as far apart as the midwestern US, Mexico, Brazil, Thailand and well beyond. The regional sounds are certainly big factors, the the groove is ultimately pretty faithful to the Kool funk sound – amazing stuff! Includes "You Best Give It Up" by Jessie & The Mel O Tones, "Who's Gonna Take The Weight?" by Cane & Able, "Kool Is Back" by La Mars, "Lose Pelos Tiesos" by Rabbits & Carrots, "Funky Granny" by Everyday People, "Jammin With Shorty" (Parts A & B) by Shorty And The Junior Kools, "Give It Up" by The Impossibles, "Funky Stuff" by the Dutch Rhythm Steel And Show Band, "Kool And The Gang" by Tyree Glenn, Jr & Brain Damage, and more. A&M/Shout Factory, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
A standing room ovation in the A&M Studios – certainly the kind of reception we'd imagine Herb would get during these glory years of his career! The set's one of the most no-nonsense Tijuana Brass sessions of the 60s – a tightly crafted album that has a bit more jazz than usual sneaking in on some of the tunes, but still enough of that snapping, punchy rhythmic approach that makes Herb and the group so great! As usual, the fluidity here is the strongest point – as the A&M touch takes a sound that should be hokey, and flips it into something really really groovy through warm use of compression in the studio. Titles include "Blue Sunday", "Bean Bag", "Work Song", "Our Day Will Come", "Mexican Road Race", and "Freight Train Joe". CD

Trumpety magic from Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass – a record that's known not only for its classic cover of a model dipped in whipped cream, but also for it's tremendously groovy groove! The Tijuana sound is very firmly in place by the time of this set – Mexican-inspired, but compressed down into a sweet little LA groove in that magical A&M way – never too over the top, done in a way that takes a previously-hokey brassy sound, and smoothes it out for the Now Sound generation! Harvest/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A trio of great albums from Babe Ruth – plus bonus tracks too! First up is First Base – the debut of a group so great and so groovy, they ended up having a huge influence on the early sound of hip hop – thanks to a wonderfully funky sound at the core of their progressive rock groove! Babe Ruth have this rhythmic impulse that's really amazing – a way of working bass, drums, and percussion together with qualities that go way past just prog rock noodling – and have this focus that really fits the lead vocals and guitar of Alan Shacklock, who also handled all the arrangements for this mighty debut too! Titles include their classic cut "The Mexican" – a famous sample cut from way back, with nice use of acoustic guitar and a Morricone riff too – plus versions of Zappa's "King Kong" and Jesse Winchester's "Black Dog" – and the originals "Wells Fargo", "The Runaways", and "Joker". Next is Amar Caballero, an album with a horse on the cover, and a sound that's maybe even more soulful than the first mighty outing by Babe Ruth – quite a lot, given the strength of that debut! Female singer Jenny Haan seems to have an even greater presence here – working some nice currents of color through the group's great ability to riff, groove, and sometimes step into more acoustic modes – all while holding onto one of the hippest currents going in the Harvest Records scene – and one of the most unique as well! There's plenty of surprises throughout – and in addition to great cuts like "Broken Cloud", "Gimme Some Leg", "We Are Holding On", "Amar Caballo", and "Doctor Love" – the group also turn in a nicely offbeat remake of "Cool Jerk" too! Last up is the self-titled Babe Ruth, a set that really stands as a testament to their many musical influences! There's few groups who could ever hope to wrap together influences from Stax Records, Ennio Morricone, and Curtis Mayfield – and whole the whole thing could ever turn out well – but the mighty Babe Ruth do exactly that, and still find time for some of their own unique grooves as well! The group are every bit as groovy here as on their previous records – mixing fuzzy guitars, well-crafted rhythms, and a nicely compressed version of prog into an amazingly fresh sound that still delights all these many years later – thanks to well-crafted vocals from Jenny Haan, and sharp arrangements from Alan Shacklock, whose guitars and sense of wit really keeps the whole thing moving nicely. Shacklock penned most of the original tunes here – like "Dancer", "Somebody's Nobody", "Jack O'Lantern", and "The Dutchess Of Orleans" – and the group also turn in nice remakes of "Fistful Of Dollars", "We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue", and "Private Number". 3CD set features bonus tracks – "Wells Fargo (single)", "Theme From A Few Dollars More", "Ain't That Livin", "If Heaven's On Beauty's Side", and "Private Number (single)" – plus a big booklet of notes. The format here is a bit more freewheeling than some other Lighthouse sessions – as the mood changes up from track to track – offering up some great Latin on a few tunes (one with Jack Costanzo and another with Carlos Vidal on percussion), a bit of R&B tenor wailing, and some more of the usual Four Brothers-styled horn lines. Never-heard music from the enigmatic Jim Sullivan – the singer/songwriter who disappeared in the New Mexico desert after giving the world his fantastic album UFO! The style here is a bit different than that one, and maybe even more to the heart of Jim's spirit – as the work was all recorded in 1969, with just vocals and guitar – in a way that lets the brilliance of Jim's songcraft come across even more strongly than before – but all without ever feeling like scratchy demo tapes, or half-finished ideas! Instead, the album stands as a much-needed addition to the tiny Sullivan catalog – and really has us wondering what else Jim would have given us, if the shadows of mystery hadn't taken him away. Big Crown, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Insanely wonderful work from the Texas scene at the end of the 60s – a huge collection of the English language soul songs of Sunny & The Sunliners! The group first hit national fame in the earlier part of the 60s, with a sweet falsetto crossover hit – but as the decade moved on, they balanced their music equally between Spanish and English tunes – the former in more of a Tex-Mex mode, the latter in a wonderful version of sweet soul! In a way, Sunny's work here is a lot like Joe Bataan during his Sweet Soul years – a heartbreaking blend of Latin roots and east coast soul – produced with a rootsy vibe that really gets right to the heart of the matter! Sunny's work has never been reissued properly – especially the soul tracks from this period – and the collection is an ear-opening listen all the way through – and one that should hopefully put the group right up there with material by The Delfonics, Moments, and other sweet soul groups. Titles include "Smile Now Cry Later", "Put Me In Jail", "Should I Take You Home", "Cross My Heart", "Get Down", "Rain Makes Me Blue", "Outside Looking In", "My Dream", and "Open Up Your Love Door". Fuzzy psychedelic pop tunes from the late 60s – engineered by Norman Petty at his New Mexico studios towards the end of the decade – a startling change of pace from his famous work with Buddy Holly a decade earlier! Hardly any rockabilly or hillbilly rock to be found here – Get Ready To Fly is made up of tracks that link the kaleidoscopic sounds of the nascent psych genre, the hard driving buzz of garage rock, and the catchy hooks of the more chart ready rock of the time! Alas, there are no hits here, but it's full of gritty gems. We can think of some fairly high profile modern scenesters in Chicago alone that don't have even a thimbleful of the charm to be found on this compilation. 26 tracks in all: "Groovy Motions" by Fireballs, "No Silver Bird" by the Hooterville Trolley, "Ain't That Love" by the Cords, "Door Knob" by Intricate Blend, "I Know" by the Dard, "Mattie Jo's" by Mike Burnett, "Not Fade Away" by Group Axis (that Bo Diddley-bitten beat sounds great in any context), "Think About It" by the Frantics, "Mystic Magic Movements" by the Shi Guys, "Acid" by Stu Mitchell with the Wes Dakus Rebels, and more. Bravo Brubeck, indeed – as this great live set not only has the Brubeck quartet in Mexico, working through some surprising Latin-themed tunes – but also includes some added percussion and guitar, which brings a whole new dimension to their sound! The album's still got the core Brubeck approach at its heart – with Dave on piano, Paul Desmond on incredible alto sax, Eugene Wright on bass, and Joe Morello on drums – but the quartet finds a way to really open up on these numbers, and expand their sound into new modes – as they'd done on some of their Japanese and Eurasian explorations. A number of tunes are Latin American numbers, re-arranged in a modern way by Brubeck – and titles include "Cielito Lindo", "Sobre Las Olas", "Nostalgia De Mexico", "Poinciana", "Estrellita", and "Alla En El Rancho Grande". Vam (Mexico), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99
A great mid 70s record by Antorcha – whose late 60s records as Las Antorchas were a great mix of styles – from beat, to garage, mod and psych – and by this point in the mid 70s, shortened their name and honed their groove into heavier, moodier style that's even better! Heavy rhythms and moody textures – with some really haunting organ grooves – and an overall vibe that's up there with some of greater underground rock around the world at the time. By this point, the band was producing and promoting themselves – and put up a number of EPs that are compiled here for this great 11 song set: with "En El Jardin Del Eden", the English-sung "Grass" and "Going Down", "La Tierra", "Crisalida", "Bracero", "Mira", Quiero Vivir" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Gatefold includes poster and insert.)

Bobby BareTravelin Bare/Constant Sorrow/Streets Of Baltimore ... CD
RCA/Morello (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A trio of early records from the great Bobby Bare – presented here in one 2CD set! First up is The Travelin Bare – on which the young Bobby Bare hits the road – taking on a whole host of travel-themed tunes on this gem of a record from 1964 – and although the approach is maybe a bit different than Bare's classics of the 70s, that amazing vocal approach can't help but make every song sound great! In other words, what should be a gimmicky set turns out to be a surprisingly strong vehicle for Bobby's talents – which really soar out, even amidst the full productions laid down by Chet Atkins – heartbreaking vocals on tunes that include "Long Way To Tennessee", "Down In Mexico", "Sittin & Thinkin", "Lonely Town", "I Was Coming Home To You", "Long Black Limousine", and "When I'm Gone". Constant Sorrow is an album that's a bit young in the career of Bobby Bare, but which already shows the singer taking on some of the newer, fresher modes that would make him a giant in the 70s – including some inspirations from folk music that really set the album apart from some of RCA's more pop-country material of the time! Bare's got this way of singing that's wonderful right from the start – heartbreaking even when he's sounding strong – and deeply personal, even in a way that some of the more serious folk singers of his generation couldn't hope to touch. Bobby mixes up country and folk tunes here, all with that classic RCA 60s production – on titles that include "Delia's Gone", "Don't Think Twice It's All Right", "Just To Satisfy You", "The Deepening Snow", "Times Are Gettin Hard", "I'm A Man Of Constant Sorrow", and "Countin The Hours Countin The Days". Streets Of Baltimore is a record that gave Bobby Bare one of his first great songs with the famous title track – but which also really opens up with pure greatness all the way through – showing a maturity in Bare's voice that's a real change from his music of a few years before! The album's got one of those RCA formulas to the song selection – most are city-based numbers, set around the US – but the approach also gives Bobby some great tunes to work with, especially the kind of double-edged lyrics that always opened up his sense of wit mixed with melancholy. In addition to the classic reading of "Streets Of Baltimore", other tunes include "Houston", "Memphis Tennessee", "Vincennes", "Cold & Lonely City", and "There Ain't No Fun In This Town". CD

Ray CamachoMucha Salsa ... CD
Luna/Everland (Austria), 1978. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
An obscure salsa set from Ray Camacho – an artist who always seems willing to mix up styles in his music! That's definitely the case here, as Ray mixes straighter Latin modes with a few border touches – creating a hybrid of New York and Mexican modes that's pretty unique – but which also has some occasional funk and soul currents that are probably the record's strongest suit! Ray plays trumpet, and the rest of the group includes guitar, trombone, and plenty of percussion – plus sax and piano from Manuel Palafox, who also handles arrangements. Titles include a great cover of "Low Rider", dubbed "El Pachuco", the Latin funk number "Tomas Al Timbal", and a funky take on Brass Construction's "Movin On". – plus "Me Patina El Coco", "Madrecita Linda", "Dime La Verdad", "El Pachuco", "Confesion", "Testigo Fui", and "Dulce Y Amarga". ✨✧ CoastersCoasters Greatest Hits ... LP
Atco, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $5.99
A classic full length set from The Coasters – and as much of a full album that brings together their best for Atlantic, as it is a collection of earlier material from singles! There's a really unified approach here – thanks to the group's really dynamic, surprisingly soulful vocal interplay – and to the top-shelf production and presentation of the material throughout. And sure, they were hitmakers – but we love these guys, and find them to be one of the most radical vocal groups of all time! Under the impeccable guidance of Lieber & Stoller, the group recorded some of the fiercest vocal numbers of the 50s – mixing incredibly soulful vocals with an almost cartoonish ability to conjure up little pictures with words. A dozen great numbers in all – "Poison Ivy", "Along Came Jones", "Down In Mexico", "The Shadow Knows", "I'm A Hog For You", "Charlie Brown", "Yakety Yak", "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart", "That Is Rock & Roll", "Young Blood", "Sweet Georgia Brown", and "Searchin'". Tino ContrerasLa Noche De Los Dias ... LP
Brownswood (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $21.99 22.99
A brilliant late statement from Tino Contreras – the legendary Mexican drummer who's been part of the jazz scene in Mexico City for decades – and who can still give the world wonderfully vibrant music like this! There's a deeply spiritual vibe to the record – a sound that's like some of Tino's most far-reaching work of the late 70s – and the group here features added percussion alongside piano, organ, saxes, and guitar – both acoustic and electric, which creates a great bridge in the sense of sound – as the music swirls together with a sense of majesty that almost recalls the best Latin America projects of Gato Barbieri on Impulse Records. All tunes are originals by Contreras, delivered with a fantastic spirit by the group – and titles include "Mascaras Blues", "Nina Yahel", "El Sacrificio", "Al Amanecer", and "Malinche". Kenny DorhamWhistle Stop ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $14.99
Maybe one of the greatest albums ever from trumpeter Kenny Dorham – a set that has him really stretching out as a musician – not just showing off that impeccable sense of tone that marked his important records of the 50s, but also coming up with new ways of phrasing, and a sometimes-unique approach to rhythm as well! The set's about as all-star as you can get for a Blue Note date of the time – and that's really saying a lot – with the mighty Hank Mobley on tenor, whose work here is as important as Dorham's – and the rock-solid rhythm trio of Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – who perfectly echo Kenny's new sense of changes in his music. Titles include the great "Sunrise In Mexico" – a very unique tune – plus "Buffalo", "Sunset", "Windmill", "Philly Twist", and "Dorham's Epitaph". CD

✨✧ Dug Dug'sLos Dug Dug's ... CD
RCA/Lion, 1971. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Heady work from one of the heaviest Mexican rock acts of their generation – a group who are as wild and wooly as they look on the cover – and who deliver a set that's got all the punch, power, and psych genius of some of the best UK material from a few years before! There's a really sinister vibe to the record, right from the start – sounds that emerge from the darkness as the drums explode and the guitar sends up a wail of fuzz – yet matched at times with some richer tones on acoustic guitar and even a bit of flute – showing that these guys weren't just being crazy for crazy's sake – and instead really had a sense of vision and purpose. The whole thing's wonderful, and done with English lyrics that should have made it a big global hit – thanks to titles that include "Lost In My World", "Without Thinking", "Eclipse", "Sometimes", "Let's Make It Now", "World Of Love", "I Got The People", "It's Over", "Going Home", and "Who Would Look At Me". A great little project from funk maestro Lance Ferguson – one that has Ferguson working with a group of musicians and singers to really recast some great tracks from the past! The approach here is maybe a bit like the way that Bluey and Incognito might transform a classic tune on some of their albums from years past – but the scope is wider here, as the group takes on a nice range of material from artists as diverse as Azymuth, Chic, Pat Metheny, and Kool & The Gang! There's as much an instrumental focus on the record as a vocal one, depending on the tune –a nd titles include great remakes of "Summer Madness", "Hot Dog", "New Morning", "Sueno Con Mexico", "Why", "Far Beyond", and "Estrelar". KaleidoscopeKaleidoscope ... CD
Orfeon/La Ciruela Electrica (Mexico), 1969. Used ... $6.99
Not the US group Kaleidoscope, but a Mexican one – very fuzzy and tripped out, with English language lyrics all the way through! The production is nice and muddy – in just that right psyche way to make the vocals lay on top of the guitars lay on top of the basslines – which gives the record a really heady, brooding sort of quality – making things seem probably even darker than the group intended when first recording, with a nicely spooky feel all the way through! Organ is a key part of this heady brew – often bubbling up from the bottom, but never quite breaking through the fuzz – and the vocals have this stark, echoey feel that almost reminds us of early Jonathan Richman, but without the naivete. Titles include "I Think It's All Right", "Let Me Try", "Hang Out", "I'm Crazy", "A New Man", "A Hole In My Life", and "I'm Here He's Gone She's Cryin". CD
