2 rare albums from Brazilian singer Sylvia
Telles – both of which feature lyrics in English! First up is The Face I Love – a set that's similar to some of the American bossa sessions on the time at Verve – but which was recorded as part of the original Elenco series in Rio in the 60s, with sweetly jazzy orchestrations from the great Lindolfo Gaya! Sylvia
's vocals are great – light, dreamy, and with some warm touches that are a bit different than those used by other bossa singers at the time – and the album also features a great array of lesser-heard titles, including "Surfing In Rio", "The Face I Love", "Rain", "Image", "Balanco Zona Sul", and the fitting "Pardon My English"! Music Of Mr Jobim is a beautiful album of mellow bossa tracks sung by Sylvia
– all written by Jobim, of course, and given a lovely and melodic touch! Sylvia
's vocals are incredible – often in English on some of the tracks (the album was briefly issued in the US in the 60s), and done in a style that's sad and mellow, but never overdone or too emotive – perfect for the subtle genius of Jobim! Arrangements are by Maestro Gaya – a blend of strings and light instrumentation that really recalls the style of some of the best California bossa sessions of the 60s, especially those by Jobim for Warner. Titles include "Bonita", "One Note Samba", "Roses & Roses", "Quiet Nights", "Dindi", and "Dreamer".
