Sylvia StriplinGive Me Your Love (Japanese 2LP 180 gram pressing) ... LP
Uno Melodic/P-Vine (Japan), 1981. New Copy 2LP ... $44.99 About August 4, 2021
Amazing! This lost Roy Ayers-produced gem from the early 80s has not only been one of the biggest sample records of all time, but it's also become one of the holy grails of the groovy record collecting scene! It's a stellar bit of jazzy soul with the same production vibe that's characterized Roy's best work – but made all the more sublime thanks to Sylvia Striplin's beautifully fragile and soulful vocals, which sound a bit like Minnie Riperton's at times – but also has a fuller, richer quality too. The record's got arrangements by Sylvia, Roy, and James Bedford (who also recorded for Uno Melodic), and it includes classics like "Give Me Your Love", "You Can't Turn Me Away", "Look Towards The Sky", "All Alone", and a great cover of Roy Ayers' "Searchin". LP, Vinyl record album
This title is scheduled for release about Wednesday, August 4.

An obscure album from Sylvia Syms – issued on the short-lived Movietone label at ABC, with backing by the combo of pianist Bernie Leighton! Players aren't named, but there's a strong trumpet and tenor component to the album – with deeper soul that makes Sylvia sound hipper than usual. LP, Vinyl record album

Sylvia TellesAmor De Gente Moca – Musicas De Antonio Carlos Jobim ... CD
Imperial/Universal (Japan), 1959. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
A beautiful early showcase of the compositions of Antonio Carlos Jobim – and one of the best late 50s albums from the lovely Sylvia Telles! The album's got a wonderfully gentle feel – one that's a far cry from some of the more emotive female vocal work that had come from Brazil in the 50s – and although the sound isn't fully bossa nova, it's certainly a strong precursor of the genre – arranged by Maestro Gaya with orchestrations that are as floating and dreamy as the lyrics of the tunes! Sylvia's vocals haunt the tunes in a beautifully, echoey way – as strings, vibes, and piano slip in and out to widen up the sound – and titles include"Fotografia", "Janelas Abertas", "De Voce Eu Gosto", "Discussao", "Sem Voce", and "Canta Canta Mais". CD

Sylvia TellesBossa Nova Balanzo Baladas (aka Bossa Balanco Balada) ... LP
Elenco (Mexico), Mid 60s. Very Good ... $29.99
One of the best records ever by Sylvia Telles – a very tight set of bossa grooves, with some warm and complicated arrangements by the great Moacir Santos! Santos' influence on the session is felt especially on the tracks that feature him soloing on alto and flute – adding in some dark edges that work wonderfully with Sylvia's vocals, and really transform familiar tunes into strange new versions. The whole thing's got a sense of depth that's right up there with the best Elenco work of the 60s – a much more sophisticated take on the bossa than you'd hear from American sessions at the time. Titles include "Samba Do Aviao", "Dorme", "Rio", "Vagamente", "Amor E Paz", and "Voce E Eu". LP, Vinyl record album
(60s Mexican pressing. Vinyl has a mark that clicks on a fw tracks, but is clean overall. Cover has some wear and masking tape on the edges.)

EMI (Japan), 1958. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
Despite the fact that this album, recorded in 1958, is slightly before the bossa era, it's filled with Jobim compositions, all lovingly interpreted in Sylvia's haunting voice. The CD, which has 4 more tracks than the original album, includes lots of nice ones, like "Magoa", "Cala, Meu Amor", "Castigo", "Lobo Bobo", "Aula De Matematica", and "Estrada Do Sol". Lots of nice warm romantic arrangements, and a sound that's very similar to Sylvia's other LPs from the time. CD

Sylvia Telles/Lucio Alves/Roberto MenescalBossa Session ... CD
Elenco/Mercury (Brazil), 1964. Used ... $24.99
A classic early bossa session on the Elenco label! Sylvia Telles and Lucio Alves sing, both solo and in duets, while Roberto Menescal backs them up with his tight little combo – and even plays vibes on a few instrumentals! The whole thing's got a great fragile bossa feel, with lots of nice groovy tracks, and a warm lyrical sound. Tracks include "Baiaozinho", "Telephone", "Primavera", "Esse Seu Olhar", "Ainda Mais Lindo", "Vivo Sonhando", and "Amanhecendo". The package is very sharp looking, with the typical angular geometric style of the other Elenco covers! CD

MPS (Germany), 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark album on MPS – one that offers a survey of Brazilian music for the 60s European market – recorded live in concert and featuring key performances from Edu Lobo, Sylvia Telles, and Rosinha Da Valenca! The work here mixes bossa jazz with rootsier elements – creating a juxtaposition that goes beyond even some of the best Brazilian recordings from the same period. One of the standout cuts of the session is a killer version of "Upa Neguinho", done by Edu Lobo with the Salvador Trio – and there's lots of other goodies, including some hard bossa jazz with JT Meirelles on tenor and flute, guitar tracks by Rosinha De Valenca, a version of "Dicussao" by Sylvia Telles, and an extended "Finale" that has all of the players playing together on versions of "Berimbau", "Cuica", and "Tristeza". Wonderfully packaged, too! LP, Vinyl record album

Uno Melodic/P-Vine (Japan), 1980. New Copy (pic cover)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two killer cuts from one of the greatest singers to ever work with Roy Ayers! Ayers produced, and issued the track on his Uno Melodic label – and this 45 edit of the track is even tighter and more upbeat than the longer take – a groove that jumps into the fray right from the very first note, with Sylvia's vocals moving alongside massive basslines and keyboards from Jaymz Bedford, who also wrote the cut! "You Said" is great too – a quick-stepping midtempo groove with all these spacey touches around the edges – the sort of track that would have really stood out on one of the late 70s Polydor albums from Roy! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Limited edition Japanese 45 – part of the Groove Diggers series!)

✨✧ Sylvia TellesVoice I Love (The Face I Love/Music Of Mr Jobim) ... CD
Elenco/El (UK), 1965/1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 rare albums from Brazilian singer Sylvia Telles – both of which feature lyrics in English! First up is The Face I Love – a set that's similar to some of the American bossa sessions on the time at Verve – but which was recorded as part of the original Elenco series in Rio in the 60s, with sweetly jazzy orchestrations from the great Lindolfo Gaya! Sylvia's vocals are great – light, dreamy, and with some warm touches that are a bit different than those used by other bossa singers at the time – and the album also features a great array of lesser-heard titles, including "Surfing In Rio", "The Face I Love", "Rain", "Image", "Balanco Zona Sul", and the fitting "Pardon My English"! Music Of Mr Jobim is a beautiful album of mellow bossa tracks sung by Sylvia – all written by Jobim, of course, and given a lovely and melodic touch! Sylvia's vocals are incredible – often in English on some of the tracks (the album was briefly issued in the US in the 60s), and done in a style that's sad and mellow, but never overdone or too emotive – perfect for the subtle genius of Jobim! Arrangements are by Maestro Gaya – a blend of strings and light instrumentation that really recalls the style of some of the best California bossa sessions of the 60s, especially those by Jobim for Warner. Titles include "Bonita", "One Note Samba", "Roses & Roses", "Quiet Nights", "Dindi", and "Dreamer". CD

Jasmine (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A great overview of the guitar talents of Mickey Baker – an artist who's maybe best remembered during this time for an album on Atlantic, or his duets with the young Sylvia Robinson (as Mickey & Sylvia) – but a player who also worked on countless sessions during the years of R&B and early soul! We always knew Mickey played on some key tracks – his guitar work is as recognizable as a King Curtis saxophone solo – but this 29 track set features material we didn't even know about – most of it by some of the biggest R&B stars of the 50s! Titles include "Women Are The Root Of All Evil" by Paul Williams, "Hit Git & Split" by Young Jessie, "No Good Lover" by Mickey & Sylvia, "Juke Joint" by Sam Price, "I'm Gonna Rock Your Wig" by Sonny Terry, "Bad Hangover" by Square Walton, "I'm Doin All This Time" by Stick McGhee, "Please Louise" by Wynonie Harris, "Straighten Up Baby" by Milt Trenier, "Oh Darlin" by Johnny Frank, "All Around The World" by Titus Turner, and more by Nappy Brown, Larry Dale, Joe Turner, Ruth Brown, and others! Silva Screen (UK), Late 50s. Used ... $9.99
Really early sounds from the great John Barry – a huge amount of tracks recorded with his combo for the Drumbeat TV show in the UK! The program had a strong focus on the emerging rock and roll sounds of the late 50s – and the John Barry Seven were a perfect group to provide musical accompaniment – professional enough to handle the gig in just the right way, but youthful enough to come up with plenty of sharp-edged sounds! The instrumentation's often heavy on guitar, but features some trumpet lines from Barry too – and although the set features some instrumentals by the group, there's also a lot of vocal numbers – with singers who include Derry Hart, Adam Faith, Bob Miller, Sylvia Sands, Roy Young, Vince Eager, and others. 40 tracks in all – including "Mad Mab", "Bees Knees", "Don't Leave Me", "Slippin & Slidin", "Rockin Sandy", "Get Happy", "Italian Style", "Beatnik", "Catwalk", "I Go Ape", "Shame On You Miss Johnson", and "Buzzin". Arrangements on the set are by Clare Fischer – who plays piano, organ, and electric harpsichord in a small combo that also includes guitar by Laurindo Almeida, flute by Bud Shank, and percussion by Paulinho. Some tracks augment the ensemble with a string quartet – who give the material an appropriately sad tone, perfect for Lenita's blue-styled vocals. Includes a nicely grooving version of "Chove Chuva", plus the tracks "Wave", "Winter Moon", "Sing Sing More", "Dindi", "Stay My Love", and "Someone To Light Up My Life". LP, Vinyl record album

Oscar Castro NevesBossa Nova Mesmo ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
A rare bossa treasure from the early years of the genre – a wicked session that features instrumentation by Oscar Castro Neves, and vocals by a host of different singers! The set's half vocal, half instrumental – and the latter feature some great sounds from Oscar's combo – a group that plays with a sound that's airy, yet well-arranged – similar to some of the 60s work by Eumir Deodato or Os Gatos, but with less instrumentation overall – which makes for an even cooler sound! There's some great flute in the group, which sounds great next to the acoustic guitar – and the instrumentation for the vocal tracks is equally nice, and still really revolutionary for the time. The album's a beautiful balance between complexity and understatement – truly showing the bossa ethos at its best – and titles include "Patinho Feio" and "Com Voce" by Lais, "Pela Luz Dos Olhos Teus" by Vinicius De Moraes, "Obrigada Meu Bem" by Sylvia Telles, "Tem Do De Mim" by Carlos Lyra, and "Menina Feia" by Lucio Alves – plus "Meditacao", "So Em Teus Bracos", "Bim Bom", and "Chora Tua Tristeza" by Castro Neves and his combo. Sublime spiritual jazz from the 70s scene in Detroit – and a record that really represents an evolution of the previous sounds that you might have heard on the Motorcity's Tribe Records! The sound here is straightforward and soulful – a bit of electricity at the bottom and some fluidly gliding horn work on the top – plus some key vocals from a group that includes Kim Weston in the lead, supported by other female singers – in a righteous mode that really makes the best tunes sparkle! Other players include Phil Ranelin on trombone, Nasi Hafiz on vibes, Miller Brisker on tenor and piano, and Sylvia Truner on harp – all working together in a largeish group with the best spiritual energy of groups on Strata East! MPS, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... About June 25, 2021
The aura here is spreading wide – as George Duke really grows his sound strongly from the early years, and takes hold of a whole host of cosmic influences! The record's one of Duke's biggest for MPS – a beautiful balance between jazzy fusion and spacey soul – served up with help from an array of great singers and players from the west coast scene. Duke's still stretching out plenty on keyboards – but never in a too-jamming, too-indulgent way – always sensitive enough to never mess up the groove, and always with a sense of space and timing that never showed up this well in his later records. Players include Airto on percussion, Alphonso Johnson on bass, Ndugu Chancler on drums, and Duke himself on more keyboards than we could ever hope to list here! Vocals are by Sylvia St James, Gee Janzen, and Kathy Woehrle – as well as Duke himself – and titles include "Foosh", "For Love", "Uncle Remus", "Fools", "The Aura", "Enchinda's Arf", "Floop De Loop", and "Dawn". A host of rare cuts from Focus – the jazzy Dutch rock group of the 70s who were a surprising global hit at the time! The group are a bit different than their usual prog contemporaries – maybe it's the yodeling on their hit, but it's also the great flute work of Thijs Van Leer and guitar of Jan Akkerman, both players who were able to perfectly bridge jazz and prog – at a level that made the group's work appealing to audiences of both, but with a flavor that's all their own. This set features a few of the group's hits – the singles "Hocus Pocus", "Harem Scarem", "Tommy", and "Sylvia" – plus more obscure tracks like "P's March (original version)", "Focus III (unissued single version)", "House Of The King", "Focus IV", and "Red Sky At Night". A really unusual album from the TK Records Miami Soul empire – a set that feels like that label's attempt to go head to head with the sound of Sylvia Robinson! Like Sylvia, Regina James is a singer with a very sexy approach to 70s soul – not afraid to let her desire ooze out into the grooves, which are a really well-crafted batch of Miami rhythms handled by Clarence Reid – who also produced and wrote most of the songs in the set. And also like Sylvia, Regina may not be the best soul singer in the world, but she more than makes up for that with her personality – which comes through loud and clear in the album's very unique "Kitty Kat Pussy Cat Medley" – and on other tunes that include "Alfie", "Tribute To Music", "Primitive", and "Dancin In The Flames Of Love". This album's her legendary side for the team of Adams and Greg Carmichael – and it's got a sweet and mellow groove that's unlike anything else we can think of. Numero, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.99
Heavy funk from the Bahamas – a whole bunch of groups that will show you that Nassau had a lot more to offer than The Beginning Of The End! The groove here is totally wonderful – somewhat like American funk of the late 60s and early 70s, but served up with some very unusual rhythmic patterns too – a bit Jamaican at times, but certainly not reggae – and somewhat sunny and Caribbean styled, but not in a way that's cheesy or filled with any hokey island-styled stereotypes. Instead, the tunes are deeply funk and soulful – grooving with plenty of dark edges and gritty instrumentation that's often heavy on the guitar. Many numbers have vocals, and those are great too – and as usual with the Numero label, the whole thing's put together with amazing notes and packaging, so that you get a full history lesson and a heck of a lot of photos to support the music too! A really cool combination of styles – bossa nova rhythms from Brazil, mixed with French language vocals – often given some very cool twists and turns in the arrangements that really make the music sound unique! In other words, the combination of "French" and "bossa nova" is even better than you might expect – served up here on titles that include "Vai Vai" by Jean Pierre Sabar, "Corto Maltesse" by Sylvia Fels, "Casa Forte" by Isabelle Aubret, "Pas Tant D'Chici Ponpon" by Jean Constantin, "Le Petit Cuica" by Marpessa Dawn, "La Poupee Des Favelas" by Ann Sorel, "Un Enfant Cafe Au Lait" by Charles Level, "T'As Vu Ce Printems" by Aldo Frank, "HLM Et Cine Roman" by Christianne Legrand, "La Lune" by Francoise Legrand, "Aquarela" by Hit Parade Des Enfants, and "Comme Une Samba" by Frank Gerard. ✨✧ Arthur VerocaiArthur Verocai ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet and jazzy pop from early 70s Brazil – a great little album that we'd rank with our favorites by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo! Arthur Verocai isn't nearly as well-known as those two, but he works in a similar territory – taking jazz, large arrangements, and nice touches of electric funk – and working them into a groove that has the soaring and ambitious feel of the best post-Tropicalia work of 70s Brazil! This rare gem was self-produced, and fell of the map almost as soon as it was released – but it really deserves wider recognition, and shines with a depth that makes it an instant classic to our ears! Titles include "Presente Grego", "Caboclo", "Pelas Sombras", "O Mapa", "Sylvia", "Karina", "Velho Parente", and "Dedicada A Ela". LP, Vinyl record album

El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really well-done look at the early music of Antonio Carlos Jobim – one of the most important musical forces of the bossa nova years in Brazil, and an artist who helped set the stage for countless generations to come! The package is overflowing with work from key early albums – and mixes some key pre-bossa moments from Jobim with others that helped define the sound of the new movement at the end of the 50s and the start of the 60s – that mixture of sophistication, gentle rhythms, and thoughtful expression that really made Jobim's music so different than so many of his predecessors. The package features music from both the stage play and the film of Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro), albums from Joao Gilberto, Elizete Cardoso, Sylvia Telles, Pery Ribeiro, and Lenita Bruno – plus more symphonic and instrumental work by Jobim, and even a selection of his key compositions interpreted by important Brazilian singers! ✨✧ Eighties LadiesLadies Of The Eighties ... LP
Uno Melodic/Expansion (UK), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A legendary project from Roy Ayers – and a record that's almost as in-demand as his classic Ramp album! The Eighties Ladies were a hip vocal quartet, with the soulful Sylvia Striplin on lead – and they work here in a mix of perfect Ayers-styled grooves – often using female harmonies in just the same way as Ramp, but coming across with a style that's a bit more pointed at the clubs, and very much in the same mode as Striplin's classic solo album too! Roy brings plenty of jazzy undercurrents to the set – those sinister shapes and changes that always make his music so great – and Edwin Birdsong's help with arrangements ensure that there's some suitably offbeat twists and turns, which really keeps things interesting. Titles include the classic break "Turned On To You", plus vocal and instrumental versions of "Ladies Of The Eighties", and the tracks "Tell Him", "It's Easy To Move", "I Knew That Love", "He Is Mine Forever", and "Sing Me". ✨✧ Linda JonesPortrait Of Linda Jones ... LP
Turbo, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful selection of work by Linda Jones – one of the greatest female soul singers ever! Linda had a very short career, due to a tragic early death – but her work on record is simply astounding – a rich tapestry of deep soul, well-placed emotion, and masterful handling of just about any song. Even with familiar material, Linda sounded great – taking a song you though you knew, and turning it completely inside out. This set's a great introduction to her work, featuring production by George Kerr, Nate Edmonds and Sylvia Robinson, with 8 tracks in all including a number of songs released as 45's: "When The Hurt Comes Back", "Hypnotized", "Don't Go (I Can't Bear To Be Alone)", "If Only We Had Met Sooner", "Behold", "Stay With Me Forever", "I Love You (I Need You)", "I've Given You The Best Years Of My Life" and "I Can't Make It Alone". ✨✧ VariousCult Cargo – Grand Bahama Goombay ... LP
Numero, Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Gonna Build A Nation" by Cyril Ferguson, "Mustang Sally", "I Am The Man For You Baby", and "Funky Fever" by Jay Mitchell, "Theme From Shaft" by Esquires LTD, "Gimme Some Skin (inst)" by Frank Penn, "Words To My Song" by Dry Bread, "People Won't Change" by Willpower, "Take Five" by Ozzie Hall, "Watcha Gonna Do Bout It" and "The Time For Loving Is Now" by Mustangs, "Honesty Is The Best Policy" by Gospel Chandeliers, and "Don't Touch That Thing" by Sylvia Hall. 2LP set also features a bonus instrumental version of "Don't Touch That Thing" by Sylvia Hall! CBS/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A masterpiece of spacey soul by the great Asha Puthli – a really unique 70s singer who has this incredible vocal range, and a great way of using it amidst slinkily soulful tracks – a bit like Minnie Riperton, or maybe like some of the Sylvia Striplin work with Roy Ayers! The sound here is handled by Dieter Zimmermann – a German producer who adds in all these great keyboards that go perfectly with Asha's vocals – often hitting a midtempo pace that's quite different than some of the more disco-based material she'd record later on in the 70s. Titles include the standout break track "Space Walk", which is one of our all time favorite obscure soul tracks – and other tracks include "Wonder Why", "Hello Everyone", "Flying Fish", "The Devil Is Loose", "Good Night", and "Say Yes". About Time, 1984. Used ... Out Of Stock
American greatness from this seminal Dutch ensemble – a set recorded in the US when the group were really hitting on all burners – linking together rich strains of modern jazz in the course of a single performance! There's a great blend of tight concepts and freer solos going on here – and reedman Breuker is still very might at his most inventive – playing with a rich, feeling sort of tone, and moving through lots of new ideas – and never falling into some of the easier or more gimmicky modes that might normally hamper a project like this. Other musicians include Andre Goudbeek on alto, Maarten Van Norden on tenor, Andy Altenfelder and Boy Raaymakers on trumpet, and Bernard Hunnekink on trombone – and titles include "Women's Voting Rights", "Sylvia's Proposal", "Benares", "Kontrafunkt", "Song Of Mandalay", and "Amsterdam Rhapsody Overture". ✨✧ MomentsMoment With The Moments ... LP
Stang, Early 70s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Sweet sweet sweet soul from The Moments, and one of their rare early albums for the Stang label! The tracks are all beautiful New Jersey harmony soul, of the sort that The Moments and others put on the charts in a large way during the early 70s – and the band's smoothing their act up a bit, but still has some of the roughness that makes the best New Jersey soul albums so compelling! Of course, Sylvia Robinson probably had something to do with that – as she was still just hitting her stride in the studio – finding a great way to present the group with all the fragility of their earliest years, but also a bit more punch than usual. Titles include their hit "Love On A Two Way Street", a surprisingly great cover of "Rocky Raccoon", and other nice ones like "So This Is Our Goodbye", "I Do", "Key To My Happiness", and "Lovely Way She Loves". Pierre BarouhLe Pollen (with bonus 7" single) ... LP
Saravah/WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 About June 1, 2021 (delayed)
One of the most compelling albums we've ever heard from Pierre Barouh – a rare Japanese recording done in the early 80s, with a sound that's quite different from his earlier work – but equally great! The album's never too poppy, or overdone – certainly quite far from conventional 80s work – thanks to help on the session from YMO and David Sylvian, who both bring in some wonderful sensibilities of their own. There's a bit of electronics on the album, but they're used quite softly – creating a cool pillow of sound – layers through which Barouh weaves his amazingly cool voice. There's a nice sense of darkness to the record, with loads of cool late night tracks, and a sound that's still very sexy and French. Tracks include "Les Uns & Les Autres", "St. Paul De Vence", "Demain", and "L'Autre Rive" – and as usual, some tracks were co-written with soundtrack legend Francis Lai. LP, Vinyl record album
This title is scheduled for release about Tuesday, June 1.

A real turning point in the career of Japan – and a set that really shows David Sylvian coming into his own, both as a singer and a songwriter! The sound here is a complete change from the group at the start – these really wonderful tunes that mark Japan as one of the smarter, more sophisticated groups of the new romantic generation – and one that maybe is even better, as they never had the same sort of chart success, and only let the skills of David Sylvian deepen as they went on – instead of trying to sound more commercial, and grabbing for hits! John Punter produced, and does a good job of focusing on the more subtle elements in the mix – on titles that include "Quiet Life", "Fall In Love With Me", "Halloween", "Alien", "The Other Side Of Life", "Despair", and a nice remake of "All Tomorrow's Parties".
