Bob JamesSwan ... CD
Koch/Tappan Zee, 1983. Used ... $9.99
Mellow grooving with Bob James – not as darkly-tinged as some of his 70s fusion classics, but that's probably because he was making so much money by this point! The record's still pretty decent overall – a lot better than some of the fusion imitators that showed up in Bob's wake – and even though the production's more 80s oriented than we might like, it's still not as bad as you might think. Titles include "The Swan", "Water Music", "Ensenada Madness", and "Quietly Crazy For You". CD

Swan/Sundazed, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $15.99
A wonderful collection of work from Swan Records – the legendary Philly indie who was one of the city's first great sources of rock, pop, and soul – presented here in a special focus on female artists who recorded for the label! The package has some very well-chosen cuts – as a number of these were issued only as promo singles, which makes the whole thing essential even if you've got other Swan work in your collection – and even better as an introduction to girl singers and groups who were first beginning to forge the Philly sound! Titles include "Ladies Choice" by Patty Saturday, "Laughin" by Ginger Davis & The Snaps, "My Special Boy" by Kathy Lynn & The Playboys, "I'd Rather Fight Than Switch" by The Tomboys, "Where Is Johnny Now" by The Sapphires, "Nothin Much Tom Cat" by Ruth & Sherry, "He's Mine" by The Swans, "Hang It Up" by Joy Dawn, "Gonna Find The Right Boy" by Audrey Slo, "When He Comes Along" by The McKinleys, and the unissued cut "Bongos On The Beach" by The Three Degrees. Led ZeppelinCoda (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Swan Song/Atlantic (Japan), 1982. Used ... $16.99
The title's an apt one – given that the record was the end of the tremendous run of records from Led Zeppelin – issued after the death of legendary drummer John Bomham – but the set's also way more than just an endpoint, as many of the tracks return to the group's beginning – and bring back unheard sounds from early 70s sessions! There's a nice criss-crossing of styles here – from the rawness of the earliest records, to the refined complexity of the mid 70s – and the album's way more than just an afterthought to the catalog – and is filled with great cuts that include the Bonham showpiece "Bonzo's Montreux", plus "We're Gonna Groove", "Poor Tom", "I Can't Quit You Baby". "Wearing And Tearing", and "Ozone Baby". CD

✨✧ Led ZeppelinIn Through The Out Door (double LP sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Swan Song/Atlantic, 1979. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Led Zeppelin's final album of the 70s – a record that really has them stretching out and trying on some new ideas, yet still holding onto all their genius in the process! Sure, the album's maybe not as iconic as the first few – but from the perspective of decades later, it's a killer – and still blows away just about all the competition – with that Plant/Page magic that still comes through brilliantly, no matter what the setting. There's a few unusual twists and turns – a bit of Latin here, a slight keyboard there – but overall the main focus is still on the lead duo, getting plenty of heavy drums to keep things moving. Titles include the hits "Fool In The Rain" and "All My Love" – plus "In The Evening", "South Bound Suarez", "Carouselambra", and "I'm Gonna Crawl". 2LP set features 7 great bonus tracks – rough mixes of the album in progress, on titles that include "Southbound Piano", "In The Evening", "Blot", "The Hook", "The Epic", and "Fool In The Rain". CD

Led ZeppelinPhysical Graffiti ... LP
Swan Song/Atlantic, 1975. Very Good+ 2LP ... $89.99
Led Zeppelin at their most sprawling – in both ambition and in the pacing – on the gargantuan Physical Graffiti! This is the album where they started bringing some odd synth textures to the sound, and it's to Zeppelin's eternal credit that this doesn't compromise their blues-reverent hard rock one bit! There's no better Zeppelin album when it comes to giving the fans what they want, while chasing the band's adventurous muses at the same time. Includes the classics "Kashmir", "Custard Pie", "Houses Of The Holy", "In The Light", "Ten Years Gone", "Boogie With Stu", "Sick Again" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(US Swan Song pressing with PR and AT etch, in the die-cut cover, with light wear. Includes the printed insert.)

Led ZeppelinPresence (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Swan Song/Atlantic (Japan), 1976. Used Gatefold ... $14.99
Overlooked genius from Led Zeppelin – an album that was missed by many the first time around, because of it's tight focus and simplicity! For the set, the group step back just a bit from their more stylistically sprawling tendencies – almost as if they got some of the more ambitious ideas out of their system with Physical Graffiti, or simply wanted to get out there and kick some ass – a back to basics move, and one that sees some tremendous guitar work from Jimmy Page! The album still has some longer songs and complicated changes – this is Led Zeppelin, after all – and the lack of over-played classic rock radio fodder actually makes this one a better listen nowadays than the more iconic albums. Includes "Achilles Last Stand", "For Your Life", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", "Candy Store Rock", "Hots On For Nowhere", and "Tea For One". CD

Led ZeppelinSong Remains The Same (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Swan Song/Atlantic (Japan), 1976. Used 2CD Gatefold ... $24.99
A live album, but one that's every bit as essential to the Led Zeppelin catalog as any of their studio albums from the 70s! In fact, the album may well be more important on its own – as it marked a real high point for the double-length live album in rock music – not just because it features lavish packaging and great presentation – but also because, like the film, it's filled with really long, unusual takes of the group's classics – most of which diverge very strongly from their studio versions! The real highlight here is the set's classic "Moby Dick", which features one of the greatest drum solos ever set to wax – and other tunes include "Rain Song", "Whole Lotta Love", "Stairway To Heaven", "No Quarter", and "Dazed & Confused". Warner, 1999. Used ... $3.99
Never a stereotype, Cibo Matto was a pretty trailblazing act from the start – and their underrated late 90s swan song (for quite a while) Stereo Type A is a major reminder of that – blending genres and breaking barriers as strongly as ever! It's a brilliant mix of styles, from leftfield hip hop and breezy electronics to breezy bossa pop, Stereolab-esque space age sounds and beyond. Guest list includes Sean Lennon and Caetano Veloso (Cibo Matto's love of Brazilian music is clear and true) and titles includes "Working For Vacation", "Spoon", "Flowers", "Moonchild", "Sci-Fi Wasabi", "Clouds", "Speechless", "Blue Train", "King Of Silence", "Backseat", "Sotne", "Mortming", "Sunday" (Parts 1 & 2) and more. Miles DavisSomeday My Prince Will Come (Columbia Jazz Masterpieces) ... CD
Columbia, 1961. Used ... $2.99
The tenor sax here makes the album a standout – as John Coltrane still works with Miles Davis on 2 tracks for the record, but Blue Note stalwart Hank Mobley joins in on the rest! The approach is similar to that of the classic Coltrane/Davis years – and in a way, the record's kind of a swan song to that period – one of the last studio session that Miles would cut in such an unabashedly sweet and lyrical way. And while Mobley's always better known for his harder-blown notes at Blue Note, he sounds totally great here next to Davis – really keeping up the gentle spirit and spaciousness of the record, and working with a gentleness that surpasses even his work on the legendary Soul Station album. Rhythm is by the trio of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb – and titles include Miles' classic version of "Someday My Prince Will Come", plus "Old Folks", "Teo", "Drad-Dog", and "Pfrancing". King PleasureMr Jazz ... LP
United Artists, Early 60s. Very Good ... $7.99
Despite the fact that he's one of the most influential jazz singers of all time (and certainly one with the biggest hit, as the original recording of "I'm In the Mood For Love" probably sold more copies than most other vocalese recordings combined), King Pleasure only ever cut three full albums – and this third one is the hardest to find! The album was recorded for United Artists during the time when Alan Douglas was cutting sides for the label, and it's very much in the same mode as his earlier recordings for Prestige and HiFi, apart from some occasional spare string backing that's added to the small group jazz playing. Pleasure's vocals are wonderful – incomparable, and right at the peak of vocalese sublimity – and the album's filled with great numbers like "That Old Black Magic (Diaper Pin)", "This Is Always", "Jazz Jump", "Don't Get Scared", "Swan Blues", and "Mean To Me", all completely transformed by Pleasure! Clara RockmoreTheremin (aka Art Of The Theremin) ... LP
Mississippi, Mid 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $16.99 About November 5, 2021
A pretty amazing and surprisingly lovely LP from theremin player Clara Rockmore – accompanied on piano by Nadia Reisenberg – and a record that really strips away the sci fi futurist stereotype of the theremin! The material was recorded in the mid 70s, an LP "presented by" Shirleigh and Robert Moog, and featuring the personal endorsement of Leon Theremin among the information on the gatefold sleeve, and Clara really earns the accolades and presentation of these electronic pioneers. She ekes haunting, ethereal and beautiful sounds from the instrument, with a bit of drama and an almost classical feel, but stripped to the dramatic essence rather than grand and epic. Wonderful! Includes takes on Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky and Tschaikowsky among others, with "Vocalise", "Song Of Grusia", "The Swan", "Chant Du Memestrel" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $34.99 39.99
Great cuts from the old school – pulled together from the earliest days of hip hop – at a time when the boundary lines in the music weren't so fully formed! These days, the difference between hip hop and club cuts is huge – but back in the South Bronx scene at the start, there was a lot more interplay between styles – as 70s funk served as the blueprint, disco singles expanded the format, soul vocals gave some structure, and live rhymes and DJ work provided all of the spontaneous elements that made the music so unique – coming together with amazing energy that really reflected the street-level sounds of the New York scene! This ultra-hip collection brings together all those amazing strands from the early years – in a set that's one of the best historically important Soul Jazz titles we've seen in years – from the excellent track selection right down to the very detailed notes. There's plenty of rare cuts here you're not likely to have in your collection – and titles include "Body Rock" by Neil B, "Positive Life" by Love Bug Starski & The Harlem World Crew, "At The Place To Be" by Mr Sweety G, "New Rap Language" by Spoonie G & The Treacherous Three, "We Are People Too" by Master Jay, "Equidity Funk" by Mistafide, "And You Know That" by TJ Swan, "Searching Rap" by Bon Rock & The Rhythm Rebellion, "Willie Rap" by Willie Wood & The Willie Wood Crew, "Rhythm Rap Rock" by Count Coolout, "On The Go" by Black Bird & Kevski, "Philosophy Rappin Spree" by Super 3, "Move Your Body" by Bramsam, and "One More Time" by Sugar Daddy. Savoy/Honest Jons (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99
An insanely fantastic look at the strong legacy of gospel music from Savoy Records – a company who were initially a powerhouse in the fields of jazz and R&B, but who moved into the gospel world and dominated that market for decades! Savoy is a bit like Chess Records – a company who really learned how to record blues singers and soulful styles from the secular world, then used that same ability to work some real magic on songs from the more spiritual side of the spectrum – an approach that really made for top-shelf music, even as the decades moved on! Savoy's gospel legacy has always been a bit underground – not nearly as reissued for larger audiences as their jazz and blues material – but this collection does a great job of correcting that lack, by presenting their music in a wonderful format – all in a mix of rare cuts and classics from the gospel underground. This second volume features work from Savoy's prime 70s gospel years – 20 tracks by artists who include The Metro Tones, Betty Hollins, Gene Martin, Swan Silvertones, Artistic Sounds, James Moore, Holy Lights Of Baltimore, Brooklyn Skyways, World Wonders, Myrna Summers, Brockingham Ensemble, Prof Charles Taylor, Exciting Supreme Highlights, and Highway QCs. ✨✧ John HicksSweet Love Of Mine ... CD
High Note, 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful swan song from the late, great John Hicks – sadly no longer with us on earth, but still making our richer with albums like this! Even in his later years, Hicks continued to evolve tremendously as a player – and this final album shows facets of his talents never expected in the early days – a solo sensitivity on quieter ballads, a pulsating rhythmic quality on Latin-tinged numbers, and still the powerful voice that emerged on his first dates as a sideman back in the 60s. Although the record offers a few different modes – three solo piano tracks, one duet with tenor, and some added percussion – the session's still a really unified one, all recorded on the same day with the intention of this full album always in mind – and not just scattered tracks put together after Hicks' death. The core quartet features Javon Jackson on tenor, Curtis Lundy on bass, and Victor Jones on drums – and 4 tracks feature Ray Mantilla on percussion and Elis Wood on flute. Titles include "One Peaceful Moment", "Sunset Blues", "Peanut Butter Two", "I Remember Clifford", "Sweet Love Of Mine", "Mambo Influenciado", "Hold It Down", and "Once I Loved". CD

Titles include early versions of "Smokey Day", "She Loves The Way They Love Her", and "If It Don't Work Out" – plus "Girl Help Me", "I'll Keep Trying", "Don't Cry For Me", "Imagine The Swan", "Walking In The Sun", and the smoking instrumental "Conversation Off Floral Street". Light In The Attic, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic entry in this really groovy series – and one that's filled with even more surprises than the first two volumes! It's been quite awhile since Light In The Attic gave us those sets – and the time's been well-used to dig up a much later batch of tracks from the world of country music – tracks from a time when, overall, the country music mainstream was moving both towards the styles of rock and adult contemporary – and there was a bit less of the funk crossover styles that you would have heard a decade before. Yet surprisingly, there's still plenty of those grooves at hand here – and often for artists you might not expect, including some big country chart names who really surprise us with their funk-based entries on the set! ✨✧ CanLost Tapes (3CD deluxe edition – 10" box) ... CD
Spoon, Late 60s-Mid 70s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A mighty impressive box set of previously unreleased Can – incredible stuff captured throughout their groundbreaking run from the late 60s to mid 70s – culled from hours and hours of tapes of the sessions that could have just as easily wound up on any of their classic records of the period! We figured that this would almost certainly be a solid companion piece to their initial run of classic albums – but the best thing about it is that out stands up really well on its own. Can pretty famously let the tapes run while they worked things out and let the magic happen spontaneously, so it stands to reason a lot of brilliant stuff was left on those tapes! We're surprised it took so long to pour through it and assemble some of the best of the "lost" material, but better late than never! Since it covers the full late 60s & early 70s periods, it's got bits with Mooney and Suzuki, hypnotic live takes, slow-building tension, moody lulls and violent bursts of sound – it's Can, alright! 30 tracks sequenced brilliantly over 3CDs – and it comes a reel-to-reel style box with a 10-inch booklet. Titles include "Millionenspiel", "Waiting For The Street Car", "Evening All Day", "Deadly Doris", "Bubble Rap", "Your Friendly Neighborhood Whore", "Bilnd Mirror Sur", "Bubble Rap", "Godzilla Fragment", "Barnacles", "The Agreement", "The Loop", "A Swan Is Born" and more. A&M, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant later album from The Feelies – ultimately something of a swan song, serving as what many thought would be their final album! Time For Witness shows The Feelies as a band, much to their credit, assured enough in their legacy as avant rock innovators to be able to deliver the goods with a bit of subtlety – with layered guitar interplay and a sneaky melodic sensibility that's layered in a way that you hear something new years later. We've loved this underrated set for A&M for a couple decades and STILL feel like we learning from it! Includes "Waiting", "Time For A Witness", "Sooner Or Later", "Decide", "For Now", "What She Said", a cool cover of The Stooges classic "Real Cool Time" and more. CD

Light In The Attic, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Get It Up" by Ronnie Milsap, "Rich Man" by Terri Gibbs, "Down To The Station" by Dennis Linde, "Do Me" by Travis Wammack, "I Got The Fever" by Bob Gailbraith, "Oliver Swan" by Billy Swan, "Sure Thing" by Dolly Parton, "One & Only One" by Eddie Rabbit, "Rhythm & Blues" by Jerry Reed, "Night Fires" by Conway Twitty, "Shake The Dust" by Steven Soles, "I Betcha Heaven's On A Dirt Road" by Larry Jon Wilson, "Hale To The Man" by Brian Hyland, "Gonna Let You Have It" by Gary & Sandy, "Shot From The Saddle" by Delbert McClinton, and "Alone At Last" by Tony Joe White. ✨✧ VariousJesus Rocked The Jukebox – Small Group Black Gospel 1951 to 1965 (3LP set) ... LP
Concord/Craft, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of postwar gospel – one that really keeps the spirit of the "jukebox" in the title! The tunes here are all upbeat, and often share a lot with R&B material of the 50s – especially the vocal group numbers, which often echo more secular modes of early doo wop, but rise the lyrics towards more heavenly aims – while often imbuing the tunes with lots of earthy energy! All the tracks here are from the Vee Jay and Specialty Records labels – and in the case of Vee Jay especially, the well-chosen selection of tracks provides a long-overdue focus to tunes that have mostly been reissued for the spiritual market, and haven't gotten the kind of exposure in the soul scene that they've needed over the years! This collection really corrects that – handled by the excellent Craft division of Concord who've been giving us some great Stax reissues – and the package is overflowing with rare singles, a total of 40 tracks in all – accompanied by great notes in a really well-done package. Titles include "Let Jesus Lead You" by The Detroiters, "Let Me Ride" by The Staple Singers, "Ananais" by The Chosen Gospel Singers, "Wade In The Water" by Harmonizing Four, "This May Be The Last Time" by The Original Five Blind Boys, "Just Another Day" by Soul Stirrers, "I Am So Glad" by Patterson Singers, "I Dreamed Heaven Was Like This" by Highway QCs, "Move Upstairs" by The Gable-Airs, "Angels Watching Over Me" by The Detroiters, "The Lord's Prayer" by Swan Silvertones, "Sinner Run To Jesus (take 1)" by Soul Stirrers, and "People Don't Sing Like They Used To Sing" by Original Blind Boys. Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A full helping of work from Claudine Clark – a killer 60s soul singer, and one with a really great ear for upbeat, romping tunes! Claudine originally hails from Georgia, but the work here is much more in Detroit, Chicago, or New York styles of the time – nicely moving numbers with a Motor City blend of tight instrumentation and bold lead vocals – sometimes a bit sweet, but always with enough power to keep up with the grooves in the tunes! The package does a great job of bringing together work from Claudine's varied recording career in the 60s – material done for labels that include Chancellor, Jamie, Fayette, Swan, Herald, and Match – under Clark's name, and the names of Joy Dawn and Sherry Pye as well. CD features full notes on Claudine's music and recording history at the time – plus 24 tracks that include "Party Lights (alt take)", "Gimme A Break", "A Sometimes Thing", "Easy To Love", "The Strength To Be Strong", "The Telephone Game", "Goodbye Mama", "Hang It Up", "Standing On Tip Toe", "Moon Madness", "My Turn To Laugh", "Who Will You Hurt", "Angel Of Happiness", "What Kind Of Party", and "Teenage Blues". Quentin Coaxum, 2021. New Copy ... $25.99 30.00
A really lovely album from trumpeter Quentin Coaxum – a player we really loved on his debut, but who's grown tremendously as a writer and leader since that time! Coaxum's working here in a mode that's very well-arranged, but still nicely loose and open – this soulful flow that really marks the progression of tracks in a mighty nice way – in a lineup that includes the leader's own solos on trumpet, glowing next to work from Dustin Laurenzi on tenor, Julius Tucker on bass, Cliff Wallace on drums, Andrew Vogt and Joshua Griffin on bass, and Jeff Swanson and Anders Nordstrom on guitars. There's a gentle glow to the whole thing – very unified, thanks in part to the richness of Quentin's trumpet lines – but also with a certain spirit as the group works through shorter tracks that clearly are meant to resonate as a larger whole. Titles include "Selah Song", "Some Things Have Changed", "Constellation", "Words", "Intimacy", "East Boogie Rundown", "Goodbye Alton", and "Forward". LP, Vinyl record album

The last years of Buck Owens on Capitol Records – and some pretty great years at that! The set brings together a huge amount of material from a time when Buck was still going strong – getting completely on-fire backing from The Buckaroos, really reaching for some great fresh material, and opening the door to some of his musical partners on stage – Buddy Alan and Susan Raye. The box has a whopping amount music – all the albums, all the singles and b-sides, instrumental Buckaroos recordings, a rare duet with soul singer Bettye Swann, and lots of unreleased tracks too. As usual with Bear Family, the presentation is wonderful – a big booklet of notes that's as lively as the music within – and which finally brings light on this less-exposed side of the Buck Owens legacy! Here it is, the mother of them all! The set's got 8CDs worth of killer soul, funk, and Rhythm & Blues – all culled from the rich history of the Atlantic records label, and lovingly put together with great notes and everything! ✨✧ VariousGive Me My Flowers – Powerhouse Gospel Music From The 50s & 60s On Nashboro Records ... LP
Nashboro/Third Man, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
A fantastic collection of postwar gospel recordings from the legendary Nashboro Records – one of the most important imprints for the music back in the 50s and 60s! We rank the work of Nashboro right up with the famous Houston-bred productions of Peacock Records – and as Peacock was part of the secular soul label Duke, Nashboro was also part of the blues powerhouse Excello – which means that the cuts here are put together at a level that's maybe got as much understanding of the needs of the record racks and jukebox scene, as they are aimed at the higher ideals of the lyrics! Nashboro excelled especially in the sorts of small vocal groups that can make gospel singles from this time every bit as much a slice of harmony heavy as rare doo wop tracks – and titles here include "Seven Angels" by The Trumpeteers, "Just One Step" by Little Johnny Jones & The Little Jones Singers, "I Received My Blessing" by Radio Four, "Touch Me Lord Jesus" by Angelic Gospel Singers, "Give Me My Flowers" by The Consolers, "I Would Not Be A Sinner" by Dixie Nightingales, "Jesus Keeps Me Alive" by The Skylarks, "Sit Down Servant" by Swanee Quintet, "When Jesus Stays Home" by Southern Echoes Singers, and "Rest From My Labor" by Supreme Angels. 16 cuts in all – and very nicely done! Creative World, 1958. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Although Stan Kenton's always best known for his famous work with 50s LA reedmen, he's equally great at working with strings as he is with saxes! This set reunites Stan with arranger Pete Rugolo – the darkly modern talent who helped Kenton hit some of his highest heights in the early 50s, and who scored backgrounds for some of our favorite vocal sessions of the 50s. An amazing sides with lush backdrops of strings soaring, snaking, swanning about as horns dart in and out of the mix, and occasional percussive touches create some even further tension. 10 tracks in all: "Interlude", "Collaboration", "A Theme For My Lady", "Opus In Pastels", "Artistry In Bolero", "Concerto To End All Concertos", "Machito", "Theme ToThe West", "Lush Waltz" and "Artistry In Rhythm". A sprawling 5CD box set of benchmark 80s indie pop from the UK – chronologically sequenced (for the most part) from the beginning to the end of the decade – with so many brilliant songs both straight-up classic and others that are relatively forgotten! Incredible stuff from the post punk guitar years, to dreamier and more psych steeped sounds, to the dancier grooves late in the decade that laid the groundwork for the 90s. Classics and early singles by Prefab Sprout, TV Personalities, Everything But The Girl, Pulp, Biff Bang Pow!, Primal Scream, The Wedding Present, The Soup Dragons, House Of Love, The Shamen, The Rosehips, Pop Will Eat Itself, The Wonder Stuff, The Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets, James, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Lloyd Cole & The Commotion, The Darling Buds, The Boo Radleys and many, many more! More than 130 tracks in all – with a thick booklet of notes! Kind of like a Nuggets for the indie 80s British scenes! SO many great songs, but to name a few: "Revolutionary Spirit" by Wild Swans, "The Missionary" by Josef K, "Lions In The Garden" by Prefab Sprout, "A Picture Of Dorian Gray (Live)" by TV Personalities, "Just Like Honey (demo October '84)" by Jesus & Mary Chain, "Oblivious" by Aztec Camera, "Velocity Girl" by Primal Scream, "Go Out And Get 'Em, Boy" by The Wedding Present, "If I Said" by The Darling Buds, "Son Of A Gun (demo)" by The LAs, "The Hardest Thing In The World" by Stone Roses, "Catweazle" by The Boo Radleys and many, many more! Solid State/BGO (UK), 1969. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two early albums from this hip late 60s ensemble! Monday Night is genius work from the Jones & Lewis group – easily one of their best albums! If you've ever wondered why these guys got the chance to make so many records, check out this excellent early set and hear them at their finest. The group's a kick-ass one – with a host of all-star players like Jerome Richardson, Jerry Dodgion, Eddy Daniels, Seldon Powell, Roland Hanna, Richard Davis, and of course Jones and Lewis themselves – and the overall groove is similar to the Clarke-Boland Big Band at their best. Lots of rolling riffing rhythms, and breakout solos that really respect the members of the group – and which light a fuse under nearly every track. Features the funky groover "Mornin Reverend", plus "The Waltz You Swang For Me", "Say It Softly", "The Second Race", and "Kids Are Pretty People". Central Park North is excellent work from the team of Thad Jones and Mel Lewis – arguably one of their best albums from the late 60s, and a set that's got some really great funky big band numbers! There's a nice bouncing groove to the group that they normally don't have – possibly because Richard Davis is playing some Fender bass on the set, which brings in a nice focus on the bottom end – and the best numbers have a sock-soul feel that's in the best late 60s large group soul jazz mode! Titles include "Tow Away Zone", "Jive Samba", "The Groove Merchant", and "Central Park North". CD

Kent (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Southern soul galore – a wonderful range of tracks that are done in that best deep soul mode that borrowed heavily from country music – but also really transformed things to fit their own righteous needs! Make no mistake, the collection is all soul music all the way through – but the songs also echo some of the more heartbreaking themes and local needs you'd find in country music – and also use some isolated elements in the instrumentation and production too! The best way to think of the package is as a collection of southern soul, but one that shows a surprising lack of color barrier when it comes to musical styles – and as always with Ace/Kent, the notes and overall conception of the whole thing is really wonderful. 24 tracks in all – including "Easy Loving" by Bo Kirkland & Ruth Davis, "Big Blue Diamonds" by Little Johnny Taylor, "I Hang My Head & Cry" by Arthur Alexander, "True Love Travels On A Gravel Road" by Percy Sledge, "Touch Your Woman" by Margie Joseph, "Who Will The Next Fool Be" by Bobby Bland, "Stand By Your Man" by The Mirettes, "Till I Get It Right" by Bettye Swann, "Another Man's Woman Another Woman's Man" by Laura Lee, and "Jambalaya" by Ralph Soul Jackson. Deep deep country music, from the glory days of the genres – the kind of tracks that start in the territory of the Louvin Brothers' Satan Is Real, then take off into a whole host of different themes based on sinning, saving, and redemption! The vibe here is every bit as great as the previous volumes in the series – and as the compilations have gone on, they've only gotten more surprising – really moving past the obvious cuts for such a collection, and pulling together some real gems from the farther reaches of postwar country music! CD features 30 tracks in all – and titles include "Oh Death" by John Reedy & The Stone Mountain Trio, "Fire's A Coming" by Swanee River Boys, "Death's Black Train" by AL Phipps Family, "Heaven Bound Train" by Lewis Family, "Jesus Is On My Side" by Richard Miller, "A Wonderful Time Up There" by Wally Fowler & The Oak Ridge Quartet, "The Story Of The Street Girl" by Lonnie Glosson, "Filthy Sea Of Sin" by Ernest Carter, and "Are You Insured Beyond The Grave" by Little Jimmy Dickens. The legendary unreleased LP album from Large Professor – recorded for Geffen in the mid 90s, finally seeing official release by Large Professor's own Paul Sea Productions! It's a solid effort, with a vibe that for some reason wasn't speaking to Geffen brass at the time, but it stands up now as a pretty faultless example of solid blueprint beatcraft by one of the scene's pioneers. Some of the production is laidback and jazzy, some has a more booming bass beat, and LP's rhymes are tailored nicely to his beats. Titles include "That Bulls**t", "Hungry", "I Juswanna Chill", "Funky 2 Listen 2", "Mad Scientist", "Hard", "One Plus One" feat Nas (not too far removed from his Large Pro collaborations on Illmatic at this point), "The LP", "Dancin' Girl", "Large Pro:Verbs", "Havin' Fun", "Spacey", "Amaman", "Queens Lounge", "Bowne" and "Big Willie". Bruton Music/Trunk (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Nothing brutish here – as Trunk Records takes a dip into the sweeter side of the Bruton Records sound library – with a great focus on tunes from the label that are mellow, jazzy, and often filled with these wonderfully laidback grooves! You'll recognize most of these artists from earlier sound library work in the UK – as most of them rose up in the 60s in both the worlds of jazz and library recordings – and that legacy means that most of the cuts here have a stronger, more solid approach than some other library work of the period – as so many other companies were often moving past acoustic instrumentation to feature more electronic modes. There's definitely keyboards on the set, but also balanced with acoustic instrumentation too – served up in a great run of cuts that includes "Saturn Rings" by Alan Hawkshaw, "The Swann 1" by Brian Bennett, "Vibes" by Frank Ricotti, "Tropic 2" and "Drifting" by John Cameron, "Utopia Revisited" by Johnny Scott, "Billowing Sails" by Steve Gray, and "Stargazing" by Francis Monkman. Nice work from the Trans-Kalahari Quintet – a group that mostly resides in Botswana, but which also has a vibe that reminds us of South African jazz traditions from back in the 70s and 80s! The tunes all have a strong sense of flow – a rhythmic pulse that engages other southern African musical traditions, while still staying strongly in the jazz side of the spectrum with the overall instrumentation – a lineup that features Zakes Gwaze on guitar, Lekofi Sejoso on electric piano, Andrew Chinganga on alto, Matt Dacso on tenor, Brian Nyakaurukwa on bass, Arthur Mengwe on drums, and Dingalo Mpolaise on percussion. Hmmm . . . That's a bit more than a quintet, but we'll more than forgive these guys for the warm sound they bring to tunes that includes "Zake's Feelings", "Pulse Of The Kalhari", "Lobola", "Khola", "Sunday Breeze", "Tune For Miriam", and "Funkganga". Ace (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The music of Otis Redding – sung by some of his hippest contemporaries, and by a whole new generation inspired by his talents! The tunes here are all numbers you'd know from Redding's famous recordings for Stax and Atlantic – yet the versions are nice and fresh – some done with a gritty down-home feel that's rougher than any of Redding's records, others done with an inventive style that pushes the music forward into new modes – possibly those that Otis might have explored on his own, had he not been taken from us so soon! The package is a great testament to the Otis Redding legacy in soul music – and is filled with a whopping 25 tracks, all of them well-chosen – including "Baby Cakes" by Maxine Brown, "Just One More Day" by Clarence Carter, "Give Away None Of My Love" by Buddy Miles, "Wholesale Love" by Arthur Conley, "Hawg For You" by Tina Britt, "Hard To Handle" by Patti Drew, "Chained & Bound" by Bettye Swann, "I'm Missing You" by Mitty Collier, "Sister Pitiful" by Judy Clay, "These Arms Of Mine" by Albert Washington & The Kings, "Monkey On My BacK" by Jackie Hairston – plus the previously unreleased "Loving By The Pound (part 2)" by Otis Redding himself!
