✨✧ Anthony BraxtonThis Time (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
BYG/Sunspots (Italy), 1970. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent session for BYG! Anthony Braxton is recorded here with a number of other Chicago AACM players, including Steve McCall, Leroy Jenkins, and Leo Smith. The instrumentation includes an amazing range of oddball sound sources, including Hohner Organ, sirens, logs, mouth organ, sound machine, and chimes, and the set's played with all the sense of humor and adventure you'd expect from some of the young AACM players. The record begins with the extended "Composition No 1", which is a fairly free piece; then it moves into a nice solo by Braxton, and then a set of "small compositions", which have some excellent horn interplay between Braxton and Smith. The LP ends with a cool spoken piece by Braxton called "This Time...". Wild stuff, and a great record from his early period. CD
(Out of print, sleeve has some light wear.)

✨✧ Sunny MurrayEven Break (Never Give A Sucker) ... CD
BYG/Sunspots (Italy), 1969. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the best-ever BYG/Actuel sessions, and one that has the unlikely pairing of east coast avant players Sonny Murray and Byard Lancaster, with Art Ensemble Of Chicago bassist Malachi Favors! Murray plays drums, and reads a bit of poetry, while the band wails behind him in powerful turgid lines of hard free jazz that represent all there is to say about the freedom of the Paris jazz scene in 1969. 4 long tracks – "Invisible Blues", "Complete Affection", "Giblets – Part 12", and "An Even Break". ✨✧ Sunny MurrayHommage To Africa (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
BYG/Sunspots (Italy), 1969. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the more spiritual sessions for BYG, and a large ensemble session that brings together players like Archie Shepp, Malachi Favors, Roscoe Mitchell, Grachan Moncur, and Clifford Thornton. "Suns Of Africa" takes up all of side one, and although it begins slow, and with spare soloing, it moves into a slow rhythmic pulse that pulls along all players in a moving ensemble passge that sparkles with feeling and spirituality. Side 2 has two shorter pieces entitled "R.I.P.", which is more intense, and "Unity", which again moves into a mellower ensemble space. Certainly one of our favorite albums on BYG, and one that we find ourselves returning to more than others on the label! CD

✨✧ Sunny MurraySunshine (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
BYG/Sunspots (Italy), 1969. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious albums that Sunny Murray ever recorded – a set of large ideas and long explorations – performed here by a group of all-star avant players from the time! Murray's vision is wonderful here – even bolder and more expressive than on his work for ESP – and realized by a mighty lineup of players that includes Lester Bowie on trumpet, Arthur Jones and Roscoe Mitchell on alto saxes, Archie Shepp and Kenneth Terrode on tenors, Dave Burrell on piano, and Alan Silva and Malachi Favors on bass! The strong influence of the AACM can definitely be felt on the set – but Murray's presence really changes things up – taking the mood in a different direction than heard on the BYG albums that Mitchell, Bowie, and Favors recorded with the Art Ensemble. Side one features the extended "Flower Trane", and side two contains "Real" and "Red Cross". CD

✨✧ 13th Floor ElevatorsEaster Everywhere (LP style sleeve) ... CD
Sunspots (Italy), 1967. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Raw early genius from the 13th Floor Elevators – cut back at a time when the Texas combo were one of the hippest things going in the late 60s American underground! There's lots of sounds here that other cats would copy over the decades – but the record has a gritty brilliance that's way better than any of its many imitators – that kind of unique burst of new ideas and young energy that made psych so wonderful when it first emerged in remarkable moments like this! Roky Erickson is wonderful – and the record will definitely illustrate his genius way better than any later efforts to bear his own name in the lead – and the production is just the right blend of studio tricks and homegrown oddness to make the whole thing electrified throughout. Tracks include "Slip Inside This House", "Slide Machine", "Dust", "Earthquake", "Levitation", "Postures", "Baby Blue", and "Nobody To Love". CD

✨✧ Sun RaSolar-Myth Approach Vol 2 (LP style sleeve) ... CD
BYG/Actual/Sunspots (Italy), 1970. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Really unique material from Sun Ra – a pair of recordings that were initially circulated much more strongly than some of his Saturn Records material, thanks to the power of the BYG/Actuel label in the early 70s – but tracks that actually come from a variety of different sessions that Ra himself did with the Arkestra in the late 60s! Tracks are shortish, but very inventive – a well-chosen snapshot of all the new ideas that the group were cooking up during the end of the 60s in New York, with an increased mission to explore the outer reaches of space, and use more electronics than ever before! Ra plays some killer keyboards – moog, spacemaster, and acoustic piano – often with these really eerie tones – and other players include Kwame Hadi on trumpet, Akh Tal Ebah on space dimension mellophone, Ali Hassan on trombone, Marshal Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, John Gilmore on tenor, and Pat Patrick on baritone – and the whole group vocalizes at points, joined by other singers who include June Tyson and Art Jenkins. There's also some great use of "strange strings" on the sessions, not to mention a bit of reverb – and tracks on this second volume include "The Utter Nots", "Outer Spaceways Inc", "Scene 1 Take 1", "Strange Worlds", "Ancient Ethiopia", "Pyramids", and "Interpretation". VariousJohn Savage's 1983 to 1985 – Welcome To Techno City ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 24.99
John Savage offers us a mighty nice look at the years of post-disco, and post-post-punk – served up here in a great mix of music from a time when soulful styles were mixing it up with returning rock on the dancefloor! The work here is from a time when the UK scene was having big global impact with a new sort of sound – often with a fair dose of electric energy, sometimes darker and more industrialized, sometimes lighter and catchy – and a perfect fit for some of the street soul styles happing in the US as well! Most acts here are British, but there's a few key American groups two – blended together in the kind of cuts that made clubs like Danceteria or The Hacienda such a delight back in the day. As usual, the notes are superb – a special Savage touch – and titles include "Techno City (voc)" by Cybotron, "Telephone Operator" by Pete Shelly, "Soweto" by Malcolm McLaren, "All Tomorrow's Parties" by Japan, "Bright Lights" by The Special AKA, "What Presence" by Orange Juice, "No Sell Out" by Malcom X mixed by Keith LeBlanc, "I Want You" by Cabaret Voltaire, "Think Fast" by Pamela Joy, "Looking From A Hilltop" by Section 25, "Why" by Bronski Beat, "Sunspots" by Julian Cope, "Never Understand" by Jesus & Mary Chain, "Heat" by Soft Cell, "The Rock Steady Grew" by Rock Steady Crew, "Disappearing Act" by Shalamar, "Lined Up" by Shriekback, and "Life's A Scream" by A Certain Ratio.
