✨✧ SunburstAve Africa (180 gram pressing with bonus CD) ... LP
Strut (UK), 1976. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A killer bit of funk from mid 70s Tanzania – performed here by a group who never got the same international exposure as some of their contemporaries, but who really made some magic on their local scene! Sunburst work in this wicked blend of sharp guitar lines, heavy bass, and plenty of drums and percussion – all used in ways that are nicely different from modes you might know from Nigeria or South Africa at the time – almost a rolling wave of groove that has all the instrumental elements moving together at once, while the vocals bounce nicely along over the top! There's also some occasional trippier moments, too – weird keyboards or other inflections that really expand the sound, while still holding onto the best core elements – and the whole thing's a really haunting record that really stands out from the pack! Titles include "Kitoto Sound", "Ba Motoka Na Castle", "Ave Africa", "How Can I Get To You", and "Ani Uni". Great reissue also features a full bonus album of unreleased radio sessions from 1973, and rare 45s from the mid 70s – a whopping 10 bonus tracks! LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes full album on CD.)

Be Bop DeluxeSunburst Finish ... LP
Harvest, 1976. Very Good+ ... $7.99
One of the crowning moments of Bill Nelson and Be Bop Deluxe – a set in which it seemed that everything the group was trying for really came together – in a mode that's both tuneful and timeless, and which – a bit like Sparks or 10CC – was slightly out of time with the rest of the rock scene in the 70s! There's a few surprisingly catchy numbers – of the sort that should have made the group even bigger on the international scene – but Nelson also manages to work in lots of keyboard magic, too – in that compressed approach to his prog inclinations, which was always the appeal of the group. The set's neither glam nor punk, nor prog or classic rock – very much its own sort of thing – with titles include "Fair Exchange", "Life In The Air Age", "Ships In The Night", "Crystal Gazing", "Blazing Apostles", and "Beauty Secrets". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear, but looks great overall.)

Eero KoivistoinenAltered Pictures – The Complete New York 1983 & 1991 Recordings (Picture In Three Colors/Altered Things/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Svart (Finland), 1983/1991. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A pair of rare albums – plus lots of bonus titles too – all packaged together in one mighty 3CD set! First up is the album Picture In Three Colors – a really great moment in the career of the Finnish saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen – a player who'd been making huge waves on his local scene in the 70s, and finally got the chance to record this date in New York during the following decade! Eero is wonderful throughout – a masterful leader who really brings out a special spirit in the group – a stellar lineup of all-star American players, with Tom Harrell on trumpet, John Scofield on guitar, Jim McNeely on piano, Ron McClure on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums! Even if you know work from these other players, the sound here is quite different – much more the boldness that we know from Koivistoinen's 70s material, given new expression by these musicians. All tunes are originals by Eero – and titles include "Second Thought", "Kindergarten", "Patana", and "Linewriting". Next up is the record Altered Things – a really great meeting of minds – as legendary Finnish saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen records here with a host of American players – all with a sound that's far more bold and timeless than you'd guess from the dated look of the original cover! The lineup here includes a few musicians that Eero worked with on a previous New York date – Ron McClure on bass, Jack De Johnette on drums, and John Scofield on guitar – alongside fresh partners Conrad Herwig on trombone, Dave Kikoski on piano, and Randy Brecker on trumpet – all musicians who really follow the lead of Koivistoinen, as he serves up some really beautiful original compositions for the set. A young Bugge Wesseltoft also adds in a bit of electronics on a few cuts – and titles include "Kabuki", "Altered Things", "Everblue", "Film Noir", "Clear Dream", "Maghreb", and "BLT". CD3 features 8 more bonus tracks from the sessions for both albums – titles that include "Sunburst", "Arctic Blues", "Algo Fresco", "Never Again", and "Facts". CD

VariousDr Packer – Operation Disco ... CD
Z Records (UK), 2022. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Contemporary club cuts from the Z Records side of the universe – including many that have a strong contribution from Dave "Joey Negro" Lee – all remixed for this special project by Dr Greg Packer! Packer's got an ear that runs nicely alongside the classic club styles of Lee – a real love of those lean tracks from the post-disco years – cuts that might have a bit of house music in the mix, but also are open to some other 80s clubby vibes – all served up with a much more understated quality than familiar disco! If you love Dave Lee's work, and the work of his Sunburst Band, you'll find plenty to love here – as Packer serves up new mixes of cuts that include "Am I Gonna Be The One" by Colors, "Love Fantasy" by Jayenne, "Runnin" by Mistura, "I Am On The Real Side" by Lisa Hill, "Do You Love What You Feel" by Raw Essence, "I Can Feel Your Love Slippin Away" by Samson & Delilah, "Skate Dancer" by Doug Willis, "We Will Turn You On" by The Sunburst Band, and "Let Me Be Your Fantasy" by The Love Symphony Orchestra. VariousNight At The Playboy Mansion – Selected & Mixed by Dimitri From Paris ... CD
Yellow/Astralwerks, 2000. Used ... $4.99
An excellent collection of house tracks – old and new – selected and blended by Dimitri From Paris! The overall theme is an imaginary party at the Playboy Mansion – but from our personal experience, we can tell you that this set kicks a lot harder than the dancefloor at Hef's pad ever did! Dimitri takes off from the current ecstatic energy of the Parisian house scene, and the package is a totally stormin mix of 14 tracks that are all uptempo, all soulful, and all filled with the kind of hooks that will keep you on the floor all night long. Tracks include "Found A Cue" by Ashford & Simpson, "I'll Be There For You" by Sunburst Band, "Sweet Music" by Terry Hunter, "Motivation" by Atmosfear, "Outro Lugar" by Salome De Bahia, "Talking All That Jazz (Torti's old school mix)" by Stetsasonic, "Down To Love Town" by The Originals, "The Groove" by Astrojazz, "Reach Inside" by Bah Samba, "Wonderful Person" by Black Masses, and "Give Me Love" by Cerrone. ✨✧ Eddie HendersonCollective Portrait ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wonderfully fluid work from the great Eddie Henderson – a record that's wrapped up in that beautiful glow and searching, soulful energy that only seems to get better and better over the years! The record's got some great partners on board – including George Cables on piano and some especially great Fender Rhodes – the latter of which really reopens the glow in Henderson's music from years past, but with a much different vibe than the 70s. Gary Bartz also plays alto on most of the record – sounding wonderful as he opens up and soars – and the rest of the group features Doug Weiss on bass and Carl Allen on drums – both players who can be tight, but loose in all the right ways. Henderson's trumpet and flugelhorn lead with a veteran's wisdom, but youthful energy – and the pieces include takes on his own classic "Sunburst" and "Dreams", Cables's "Morning Song" and "Beyond Forever", plus "You Know I Care", "First Light", "Together", "Ginger Bread Boy", "Spring" and "Zoltan" – the last of which is taken in the best vintage Woody Shaw spirit! ✨✧ VariousEthereal Magic Vol 2 – Deep Laid Back Soulful Grooves – Compiled By DJ Tony Monson ... CD
Expansion (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s/2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
There's an island on the cover, but the music is all-soul, all the way through – a great collection of classic mellow moments from years back, plus a few excellent choices from more recent years as well! Still, the island's a great image for the sound of the set – as the music has this kicked-back vibe that provides a nice sort of escape from the everyday world – heavenly soul sounds that come both from rare classics, and some of the best of the current underground – brought together with the kind of care and class we've come to expect from the folks at Expansion Records. A wonderful mix of tunes – with titles that include "Remember To Remember" by Rick Holmes, "Under The Moon & Over The Sky" by Angela Bofil, "Living So Fast" by Novocento with Danni Gottlieb & Dave Liebman, "I Choose You" by Paris, "You Are My Starship" by Norman Connors, "It Should Be you" by Ashanti Munir & Neil Letendre, "He Mandu (mother mix)" by Mouth Music, "Far Beyond" by Joey Negro & The Sunburst Band, "It's Like Air" by Sunny Hawkins, "Blending Colors" by Debra Debs, "Unconditional Love" by Greg Dean with Chantae Cann & Jarrod Lawson, "Mississippi Delta Blues" by Lamar Thomas with Carrie K Thomas, and "Peace In The Middle East" by Miri Ben-Ari & Kerri Chandler.
