✨✧ Sun Ra & John CageJohn Cage Meets Sun Ra – The Complete Concert (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Meltdown/Modern Harmonic, 1986. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary meeting of talents from two different sides of the underground – avant composer John Cage and jazz visionary Sun Ra – both performing together at a special one-night event that took place at Coney Island in 1987! The set doesn't really feature Ra jamming with Cage (as if anyone could "jam" with John Cage!) – and instead, both players were on the stage at the same time, but would each step aside to let the other do their thing – Cage would vocalize in these amazing passages that are right up there with the most beautiful vocal work he ever did, alongside some "silent" performances too – and Ra would play keyboard solos that have a beautifully offbeat electric vibe! The pair do come together at one point – but mostly in a "silent" duet, although one title does feature Cage's weird vocals with Ra's keyboard. And big bonus – this package also presents the full complete concert – with material that appears here for the first time ever – including a beautiful vocals from June Tyson over Ra's keyboards on "Enlightenment", other Ra numbers that include "This Is The Space Age", "The Living Parable", "The Damned Air", and "We Hold This Myth To Be Potential". El (UK), 1940s/1950s/1960s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
The title's a reference to a Beatles' song – and the set brings together a range of classical and other styles of music that had a huge influence on the 60s pop scene – a number of sources that you'll definitely recognize in later work by the Fab Four, plus lots more important work as well! About eighty percent of the set is classical, in a mix of both avant/20th Century, and some warmer more sentimental modes – and the package also includes a few choice cuts from the world of jazz, European pop, and even global music – so that the 3CD set features this amazing mix of sounds from artists who include Charlie Parker, Jacques Brel, Bernard Herrmann, Yusef Lateef, Bruno Martino, Lucio Alves, Sun Ra, Ravi Shankar, and composers who include Berio, Bach, Xenakis, Stravinsky, Holst, Handel, Williams, Stockhausen, Ravel, and John Cage. 51 tracks in all – and notes that help guide you through this amazing musical journey.
