Juju Rogers40 Acres N Sum Mula ... LP
Jakarta (Germany), 2019. Sealed ... $14.99
Juju Rogers cut a pretty unique path on his debut album, and this might be even stronger! He has a unique perspective to draw from – born and raised in Germany with an African American GI father and a German mother, his voice and perspective in contemporary hip hop is fresh and distinctive by nature – but the craft is universally relatable. The beats and bass thump, there's nice use of live instrumentation on several tracks, and Juju's charismatic and forthright rhymes and sung vocals are really strong. Includes "89", "Real S**t", "Black Thursday", "Follow Me", "Mula", "10 Yas", "Identity", "God" & "Babalyon". LP, Vinyl record album

Rim Kwaku Obeng & The BelieversToo Tough/I'm Not Going To Let You ... CD
Sum Sum/BBE (UK), 1983. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Wonderfully groovy work from Rim Kwaku Obeng – an artist with African roots, but working here in the San Francisco scene of the early 80s – where he's clearly picked up a very international vibe in his music! Rim definitely plays some traditional percussion on the tracks, but there's also a more contemporary funky club approach too – a mixing of modes that's totally great, and which almost represents an 80s step forward for the already-great Bay Area soul vibe of the 70s! The first half of the set features material from the Too Tough EP – which has very cool female vocals, both a lead and a chorus – the latter of whom move around with the rhythms in this totally great way that almost feels like some New York cuts from the Danceteria generation. The second half of the set loses the female singers, but is still every bit as wonderful as the first – with these long grooves from Rim & The Believers that have the percussion, basslines, and guitars criss-crossing in even more amazing ways. Titles include "Shine The Ladies", "Love Me For Real", "I'm Not Going To Let You", "Peace Of Mind", and "I'm A Song Writer". CD

Black Art Jazz CollectiveArmor Of Pride ... CD
High Note, 2018. Used ... $6.99
A set that's bursting with every bit as much of the fantastic energy you might expect from the lineup – a bold sextet that features Wayne Escoffery on tenor, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, James Burton III on trombone, Xavier Davis on piano, Vicente Archer on piano, and Johnathan Blake on drums – all coming together here in a righteous message that's even stronger than the sum of its parts! All titles are originals, and have this progressive, soaring vibe – spiritual, but not in a mellow way – and instead very much up to date in terms of contemporary jazz expression, thanks to the individual strengths of the soloists – who feel completely unified throughout. Titles include "Armor Of Pride", "When Will We Learn", "Black Art", "Pretty", "The Spin Doctor", and "Awuraa Amma". CD

✨✧ Helmut Brandt ComboBerlin Calling ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), Mid 50s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Bold bass saxophone sounds from the overlooked Helmut Brand – a German player of the postwar years, and one with a sense of tone and texture to rival that of Gerry Mulligan at his west coast best! The work here is all previously unreleased, but shows Brand as one of the key reed innovators of the German scene at the time – right up there with the experiments of Hans Koller, especially in the way that Helmut can work fresh tones in with a strong sense of soul and swing! Many of these cuts feature trumpeter Conny Jackel joining in the frontline – folding his horn in with Brand's to create a cool wash of color – and a few other numbers feature Helmut alone as the lead soloist in a quartet, one with Roland Kovac on piano and Kenny Clarke on drums. Titles include "Bami", "Nordlicht", "Yesterdays", "Salute To Lars Gullin", "Love For Sale", "Berlin Calling", and "Sum". CD

Peter Brotzmann Chicago TentetStone/Water ... CD
Okka Disk, 1999. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
Fantastic live material from a very unique group – the instantly-legendary meeting of reedman Peter Brotzmann with the leading lights of the Chicago avant jazz scene in the 90s – brought together into a tremendous tentet that's maybe even better than the sum of its parts! The group features Brotzmann on tenor and clarinet, Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Fred Lomberg-Holm on cello and violin, Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums, Kent Kessler on bass – and "honorary Chicagoan" Mats Gustafsson on tenor and flutophone, plus Toshinori Kondo on trumpet and electronics, and William Parker on bass. Phew, that's one heck of a lineup – the kind that rivals some of the European or British improvising ensembles of decades past – but one that has its own very specific flavor, and a sound that's brimming over with youth – so much so that the non-Chicago guests really seem to gain inspiration from the core. This Okka disc set captures the band live at the 16th Victoriaville Festival in 1999. CD

James CarrMan Needs A Woman ... LP
Goldwax, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
Sublime southern soul from one of the greats! James Carr is right up there with the best of the 60s – Otis Redding, Arthur Conley, Joe Tex, and others – but he never made it as big as them because of personal troubles and bad planning on the part of his label and management. Fortunately, his genius has been kept alive by record collectors everywhere – for whom this rare gem is a holy grail! The album features 11 tunes that sum up the best of the south in the 60s – all sung by James with his unbelievably heartbreaking voice. Titles include "The Dark End Of The Street", "You've Got My Mind Messed Up", "A Woman Is A Man's Best Friend", "I'm A Fool For You", "Stronger Than Love", "More Love", and "Sowed Love & Reaped A Heartache". Maybe the greatest moment ever from Clarence "Fuzzy" Haskins – a key part of the George Clinton P-Funk universe in the 70s – finally getting a chance to step out on his own! Haskins arranged and produced the set – with a bit of arranging help from Bernie Worrell – and tunes are more guitar-heavy than George Clinton's work of the time, and maybe a bit trippier too – with plenty of the funky workouts you'd expect, mixed up with some other more offbeat tracks as well! The whole thing has a nice trippy soul feel – with titles that kind of sum the whole thing up: "Mr Junk Man", "Cookie Jar", "Tangerine Green", "The Fuz & Da Boog", "Sometimes I Rock & Roll", and "I'll Be Loving You". ICP (Netherlands), 2008. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
No matter what the lineup, the ICP Orchestra always has a way of making a special sort of magic of their own – blending song structure with very dynamic improvisation – at a level that often makes the end result of the group's music feel like much more than just the sum of its parts! Here, the group explodes a familiar Thelonious Monk composition at the start of the set, then takes off into even more wonderful material based around song structures by Misha Mengelberg – the pianist whose participation in the project has guided things strongly for decades! Other players here include Michael Moore on alto, Ab Bars and Tobias Delius on tenor – all three of whom also play clarinet – plus Wolter Wierbos on trombone, Thomas Heberer on trumpet, Erns Glerum on bass, Han Bennink on drums, and Tristan Honsinger on cello. The mix of dynamic group energy and sensitive individual expression is wonderful – and titles include "Jackying", "Rollo 2", "Met", "Reef", "Misha Pass The Donkey", "Jaolers Ik", and a version of the Herbie Nichols tune "Change Of Season". Jazz Rock ExperienceLet Yourself Go (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), 1969/1970. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
Fantastic work from a group who are way more than just the sum of their name! The combo is definitely jazz, only a bit rock, and really provide a funky experience on most of their numbers – in the same sort of wicked blend of acoustic and electric jazz elements that you'd find on MPS Records at the start of the 70s! The musicians here are Swiss, but come from the same mindset as that famous German label – and like some of their contemporaries across the European scene, they were young players who were really open to new ideas – which they let flow from their fingers over the course of these cool long tracks! The lineup shifts a bit over the course of these recordings, and there's some real surprises in the roster of musicians –w ith players who include Bruno Spoerri on electric tenor and sopranino sax, Dave Lee on vibes, Hans Kennel on trumpet, Christy Doran on guitar, Freddy Meier on tenor, Kenny Schmidt on drums, Hans Foletti on bass, and even a young Irene Schweizer on electric piano. Titles include "If It Wasn't For Dicky", "Krivo Sadovsko Choro", "The Starter", "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child", "Cheyenne", "Blues No Blues", and a version of the James Brown tune "Let Yourself Go". Titles include "23 N - 82 W", "Young Blood", "Improvisation", and the haunting "Invention For Guitar And Trumpet", which features Sal Salvador and a young Maynard Ferguson. Show Boat/We Want Sounds (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 33.99
An unusual little set recorded right around the same time as the classic Machibouke album from Makoto Kubota – but one that's done with a very different vibe, thanks to help from a Sunset Gang that includes Haruomi Hosono, Minako Yoshida and Taeko Ohnuki! The style is this unique blend of American roots and some slight Hawaiian touches – maybe older R&B influences that seem to have taken decades to find their way over to the Japanese scene, maybe with a stop in sunny Cali along the way – so that they're delivered with some of the acoustic elements that were brewing up in the Bay Area scene around the same time. The vibe of the record is impossible to sum up in words, but the sound is completely charming throughout – on titles that include "Louisiana Mama", "Kaette Okure", "Bang Bang Bang Yuyake Blues", "Sunset Sunset", and "Kobune No Tabi". ✨✧ Rob Mazurek Exploding Star OrchestraDimensional Stardust ... LP
International Anthem/Nonesuch, 2020. New Copy Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the most ambitious albums ever from Rob Mazurek – and a set that really continues the legacy of community building and world healing that's become such an important part of his music! Rob's a player who was great at the start – a hell of a trumpeter, and a great experimentalist with electronics – but in recent years, he's matured to become a real messenger for the farther, future reaches of jazz – with an energy that makes a collaborative project like this come off in a way that might never have occurred in the hands of any other musician! Mazurek is at the head – director, composer, arranger, and instrumentalist too – and the large lineup is filled with heavyweights from the Chicago scene that Rob helped shape over the past few decades – plus others as well – players who include Damon Locks on voice and electronics, Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Tomeka Reid on cello, Joel Ross on vibes, Jaimi Branch on trumpet, Jeff Parker on guitar, Ingebrigit Haker Flate on bass, and Chad Taylor, John Herndon, and Mikel Patrick Avery on a variety of drums and percussion. There's a richness here that tops other Exploding Star Orchestra performances – and more of a focus, too – so that the whole thing comes together as even more than the sum of its mighty parts, as one of the best International Anthem releases to date. An album that really lives up to its title – as it seems to find a magical sweet spot between all four of the improvising giants on the session – at a level that really makes the record way more than the sum of its parts! The string players here are especially amazing – as Fred Lonberg Holm feels more deeply soulful than usual, and fits perfectly next to the deeper bass talents of Michael Bisio – as the pair create sounds that are complex, but very organic too – given equally organic progressions from the tenor and soprano saxophone work of Joe McPhee. The percussion of Juma Sultan is like the icing on the cake – and titles include "AMS", "Free 3", "Malachi", "Human Being", "The Sweet Spot". CD

A surprisingly wonderful album – even if these guys break our cardinal rule of jazz combos, which is never to put the name of your home city in place of the players in the group! The group's a quartet with Frank Wess on flute and tenor, Roland Hanna on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Grady Tate on drums – and the set was recorded live in Munich before a very enthusiastic crowd. The sum total of the players is way more than the parts – as all of them manage to really stretch out on the set, working through some long tunes that have a soulfulness and inspiration that's rare for Wess and Hanna especially. A second great set from a group that's even greater than the sum of its parts – a formation that seems to breathe new life into the talents of the four legendary musicians who make up its core! Not that these players were ever flagging at all – but there's really something special going on here in the interplay between the alto of Oliver Lake, cornet of Graham Haynes, bass of Joe Fonda, and drums of Barry Altschul – great musicians in their own right, but really coming together with a unified sound here that's amazing! The leadoff cut on the record is a dedication to Ornette Coleman – and while there's a lot more going on here than just a Coleman inspiration, the mixture of individuality and unity is also something that Ornette would have really been proud of – handled here with a sense of urgency that's especially striking in the work of Lake and Haynes. The Earkestra clearly borrow a bit of their name from Sun Ra's Arkestra – and they keep a strong jazz legacy intact as they use their horns not just for full charts alongside the rhythms, but also for breakout solos that are more jazz than the usual Afro Funk-styled charts – really adding a lot to the album's guest work from legends who include Abdoulaye Diabate, Salif Keita, Sory Bamba, and Cheick Tidiane Seck. Philips/Universal (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... $13.99
One of the most legendary groups from the bossa era in Brazil – a combo of incredible players, working with sublime arrangements by Eumir Deodato – all in a sound that hardly been matched again! The group only ever recorded two albums, but they've had a lasting impact on the sound of bossa for years to come – thanks to an expansive vision that brings together spare rhythms, jazz soloing, and larger strings – all with a quality that's lighter than air – almost a sum that's far less than the total of its elements – but in a really great way! The sense of spareness and poise here is really amazing – years ahead of Deodato's better-known US arrangements in the late 60s, and somehow even more impressive here. Players include Paulo Moura on alto sax, Neco on guitar, Meirelles on flute, Wilson Das Neves on drums, and Mauricio Einhorn on harmonica – and some tracks also feature a bit of light vocals floating along gently, almost as instruments themselves. There's lots of elements here that are kind of an extrapolation of bossa nova styles – both in terms of the melody and rhythms – but the instrumentation and production are Italian cinema at its best – with loads of compressed passages, floating isolated elements, and plenty of those other-worldly touches that can make the best Italian scores of the time sound way more than just the sum of their parts! The album's way more than the sum of its parts – thanks in part to a wealth of original compositions by Robinson, which propel the whole group forward with a unified spirit – one that often has all members of the quartet contributing equally, instead of just supporting the leader! The rhythms are nicely jagged – sometimes rolling and romping, almost with a South African jazz approach – other times a bit more stark, and almost always topped by superb reed lines that almost echo some of the Ethiopian jazz styles of the period – but again, with a very special sound of their own! A number of tunes have vocals – nicely snakey, and not entirely tied to the rhythms – and there's also lots of cool organ in the group, too – over riffing guitar that moves along strongly with the drums. The sound's a bit hard to sum up in words, but is every bit as cool as you could hope from the cover and title – and tracks include "Nile Waves", "Azzah Music", "Hilwa Ya Amoora", "Bride Of Africa", "Seira Music", "Saat Alfarah", and "Farrah Galbi Aljadeed". RCA/WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1983. Used ... $12.99
A beautiful album of minimal, ambient sounds – a set that would be right at home in the world of Brian Eno's Obscure Music label – or maybe some of the chamber instrumental experiments of UK artists like Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Gavin Bryers! Like the former, there's an optimistic sensibility here – a mode that shows that instrumental experimentation need not always be atonal or non-melodic – and instead can wander through the sort of territory that a more lyrical painter or poet might take on paper, but with sound. Midori Takada composed and performed all the work herself – on instrumentation that mixes acoustic and electric, reed work and percussion, keyboards and more subtle sounds. The leadoff track is titled "Mr Henri Rousseau's Dream" – which, along with the cover, might well sum up the warmth of the record – and other titles include "Crossing", "Tromp L'Oeil", and "Catastrophe E". A brilliant album from Kaidi Tatham – deeper by far than anything we've ever heard from him, and way more than you might expect if you only know his singles from the London scene! This set's got a very strong jazz component – monstrous keyboard work from Kaidi that stretches and soars with the kind of sound you might expect from George Duke on MPS – coupled with some leaner, more rhythmic elements that show Tatham's strong ties to the London scene – yet still in ways that really break from its conventions! There's a warmth, depth, and spirituality to the record that's really amazing – the kind of new territory that others have found on the excellent Freedom School label – a place that offers a rare outlet for creative expression in times like these. Rob ThomsettYaraandoo/Hara ... CD
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 20.98
It's a bit hard to sum up the genius of Australian Rob Thomsett in words – but you can bet that we're going to try! Rob was kind of a character unto himself in the 70s – neither a psychedelic rocker, nor a new agey outcast – but instead, somehow this musician who could borrow from both worlds, and maybe a bit of the sound library and jazz scenes too – particularly that new wave of Australian "landscape" musicianship that was coming of age in the decade – when artists like John Sangster or Don Burrows were putting aside a slavish adherence to North Hemisphere inspirations, and trying to craft new sounds that were uniquely Australian! Thomsett may well blow away all other efforts of the time, though – with the kind of work here on the album Yaraandoo – which features long, open guitar lines mixed with shifting patterns of sound on a variety of different instruments – from congas to moog, tenor sax to bamboo flute – always balanced between acoustic and electric modes in a perfect way. Rob avoids any easy gimmicks, lyrics, or structures – apart from a slight inspiration from Aboriginal folklore – and instead just lets his mind and music wander beautifully, sometimes augmented by a bit of effects and studio wizardry. Titles include "Baiame", "Moulding Of Red Earth", "Nameless Children", "New Life – Refusal", "Shadow Of Yaraan", "Flight Of Yaraan", and "Tears Of Blood – Endless Weeping". This package also includes the follow-up album Hara – a set that has a slightly more conventional fusion approach, but a sound that's no less freewheeling – really great guitars from Thomsett, set up alongside loads of keyboards, heavy drums, bass, and a bit of soprano sax. The tunes move between spacious, lyrical moments and more full-on tracks – a bit like some of the best experimental European fusion of the period – and titles include "Sumari", "Breathing Space", "Hara", "Sunday 23 May", and "Michael's Song". Double-length set features great notes and packaging too! CD

Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 8 CDs ... $49.99 69.99
An insanely big collection of work from the great Deniece Williams – eleven full albums, plus bonus tracks more – all to sum up a decade in which she was one of the strongest forces going in mainstream soul! Williams got her start as Deniece Chandler on the Chicago scene – where she had a vocal range that rivaled that of Minnie Riperton, which had her initially stepping out here in a mode that's a bit similar on the first album or two in the set – working with sophisticated soul production that really brings out the best in her sound! As things move on, she also showcases the way she can wrap that fantastic voice around a catchy groove and a playful hook – a quality that made Williams one of the surprising crossover soul stars as the 80s moved in, with a big run of hits that are all included here on albums that still represent a well-balanced blend of chart tracks and some deeper full length material. The set features the full albums Niecy, Songbird, When Love Comes Calling, My Melody, a second Niecy album, I'm So Proud, Let's Hear It For The Boy, Hot On The Trail, Water Under The Bridge, and Good As It Gets – plus an album of duets with Johnny Mathis, titled That's What Friends Are For. The final CD is filled with bonus tracks – single mixes, remixes, and more! CD

A rare set of disco tunes we never would have heard otherwise – most from the late 70s , and proof that back in the day, the sound of New York had a huge impact around the globe! Vocals on most cuts are in the local language – tracks here are from Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia – but the instrumentation often has plenty of the funky elements you'd know from American disco tracks – yet often taken into leaner territory, too – and given a slightly different spin in terms of production and arrangement – maybe a bit like some of the clubbier cuts you'd hear on a Bollywood soundtrack. The set's from the same folks who gave us the great Taiwan Disco compilation – and features work by Chailai & Sawanee, Lei Si Si, Ding Dai, Yasmin, Hit Girls, Grace Simon, Fatimah Razy, and Sum Sum & Pan Pan. A fantastic combination of sounds – as older Greek modes hit the rock and roll years, get electrified, and turn out all these amazing records in the process! Part of the sound here comes from an electrified version of the bouzouki – often used with a deftness that might rival American surf guitar greats, but set to percussion that's rawer and different than standard drums – sometimes sweetened with larger orchestrations, sometimes just given a lead focus next to a strong-voiced singer – and almost always produced with all sorts of cool effects and elements that make the whole thing sound even greater than just the sum of its parts. There's plenty of keyboards too – including the Farfisa mentioned in the title – and the set features a huge booklet of notes to help explore the amazing sounds within, from artists who include Vassilis Vassilliadis, Manos Papadakis, Charula Lambraki, Panos Gavalas, Sofia Kollitiri, Giota Lida, Katy Grey, Stratos Dionisiou, and a young Vangelis Perpiniadis. Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 5CD ... $44.99 65.99
Great sounds from some of our favorite years of the British scene – those moments right after punk first exploded, and a generation of young English artists took off in so many different musical directions! The era's been labeled as post-punk, but what makes it really unique is that the label hardly does the music justice – as the time had such a rich array of sounds and styles, it would be impossible to sum of the vibe in just a few short words! There's definitely some punk elements in the music, but there's also electronic moments, sweeter songs, noisy bits, compressed prog inspirations, and even some occasional witty elements – with songwriting that's really stood the test of time over the years. There have been other collections of post-punk work over the years, but we've never seen a package like this – as the 5CD set features 111 tracks in all, packaged inside a book-style cover that's overflowing with notes and images – all with a track selection that includes lots of lost gems. In other words, even if you're like us, and already love this period, you'll still find plenty of greatness here – as the whole thing's balanced well enough to please both newcomers and longtime collectors. Includes work by Dif Juz, Glaxo Babies, The Homosexuals, Ultravox, Swell Maps, Clock DVD, Maximum Joy, Section 25, The Cravats, Native Hipsters, Josef K, Art Objects, The Passions, Big In Japan, Fischer-Z, Family Fodder, Girls At Our Best, Ludus, Boots For Dancing, In Camera, The Disco Zombies, Medium Medium, Alternative TV, The Nightingales, My Captains, Five Or Six, Steve Diggle, Dance Chapter, Fire Engines, Spoon Fazer, and many others! Dare 2, 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really unusual group, with a sound that's certainly the sum of its wonderful parts – but also different in ways you might not expect! The lineup is excellent – the legendary Dave Holland on bass, Lionel Loueke on guitar, Chris Potter on tenor and soprano sax, and Eric Harland on drums – all working together in these very groovy styles that seem to have Holland pulling a lot more bold basslines than usual – almost as if he's using an electric version of the instrument, although it appears to just be an acoustic with a pickup! There's a soulful vibe to the record that you might not expect – shades of color and tone that are maybe closest to Loueke's music, but also very different than his own records – and Potter's really great in this setting, and blows with these open lines that are still as angular and sharp as usual, but maybe a bit warmer too. The album follows heavily on the heels of Getz's brilliant Captain Marvel set – mixing together electric rhythms and some wonderfully open-minded blowing, in a sound that shows that Stan was still truly growing as an artist during this time. The double LP setting of the album makes for some great long tracks – really stretching out with Stan blowing in that strange and wonderful mix of Coltrane and Ben Webster he had going at the time, and featuring some nice keyboard work by Andy Laverne. There's something about Steve Turre in recent years that has us liking him even more and more – a maturity, a rock-solid soulfulness, and a strong commitment to jazz tradition – which, added to his already-inventive work on trombone, really makes him a massive force in jazz – capable of delivering the kind of records we turn to again and again over the years! This excellent tribute to his old leader Woody Shaw is a key example of that quality – as Turre opens up yet another side of his musical vision by turning to some of the more soaring, spacious modes that Woody hit during the 70s – working with a variety of different trumpeters in a set of mostly-original tunes that really seem to sum up the essence of Shaw. Everything about the record is great from top to bottom – and even a shifting lineup of players doesn't stop it from having a unified groove that's perfect for Turre's horn. Trumpeters include Jon Faddis, Wallace Roney, Claudio Roditi, Chocolate Armenteros, and Freddie Hendrix – who each play on a few tracks – and titles include "Woody's Delight", "In Retrospect", "Luna", "Adios Mi Amigo", "Manny's Mambo", and "3 For Woody". A fantastic testament to the genius of the transatlantic meeting that is the Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet – a group that manages to bridge the sometimes-unwieldy modes of the improvising orchestra, and the energy of a smaller free jazz combo! All the players seem tied together perfectly – both at an emotional level, and a musical one – so that the combination of energy is way more than the sum of its mighty parts – a real accomplishment, given that the "parts" include Ken Vandermark, Peter Brotzmann, Marts Gustafsson, and Mars Williams on reeds – plus Joe McPhee on trumpet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Kent Kessler on bass, and both Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums. The set begins with a searing 37 minute piece dedicated to Robert Rauschenberg – Vandermark's "All Things Being Equal", which almost has a Mingus-like combination of structure and solo. "Images" follows, and is a more freewheeling piece – but completely wonderful too! CD

✨✧ Underflow (David Grubbs/Mats Gustafsson/Rob Mazurek)Instant Opaque Evening (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Chopsticks, 2021. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collaboration between three of the most creative improvisers on the planet – an extended live set that's even better than the studio outing the group gave us on their debut! The lineup here features David Grubbs on guitar and voice, Rob Mazurek on piccolo trumpet and electronics, and Mats Gustafsson on flute, baritone sax, and fluteophone – plus some live electronics as well! The players clearly have tremendous respect and sympathy for each other – and rather than an all-star outing in which everyone's trying to wrestle to the top, the music moves very organically between structure and improvisation – really thoughtful creation throughout, at a level that makes the whole thing even greater than the sum of its three mighty parts. Titles include "Gethsemani Night", "Not At My Funeral", "Self Portrait As Interference Pattern", "A Thin Eternity", "Planks", "Instant Opaque Evening", and "Cooler Side Of The Pillow". Herb AlpertSummertime ... LP
A&M, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Late 60s brilliance from the legendary Herb Alpert – one of a few key records that has him reinventing his style for a whole new generation! Herb name-checks Gil Evans, Miles Davis, and Ahmad Jamal in the notes – and he's definitely opening up the style of his arrangements here – to make room for all the wonderful changes in instrumental music that were taking place at the time. There's less of the fake Mexican-style sound of the early records – and more of that sublime blend of Brazilian, jazz, soundtrack, and singer/songwriter touches that marked the other A&M records of the period. The sound still has Herb's trumpet up front – but there's a lot more space in the arrangements – and titles include a great cover of Brian Wilson's "Darlin", plus "Summertime", Martha My Dear", "Catch A Falling Star", "The Nicest Things Happen","If You Could Read My Mind", and "Hurt So Bad". A set that's less a "summit" than a great collection of groovy work for Prestige Records in the 60s – tracks that didn't make it onto other full albums of the time, but which feature material by some of the most soulful talents on the label! Tenorist Gene Ammons is the main star here – stretching out wonderfully on most numbers on the record – although the set also features added tenor work from Red Holloway, George Barrow, and Harold Vick! The mighty Jack McDuff lends his Hammond to a few tunes, Etta Jones sings on three numbers, and the record even features trumpet from Clark Terry, alto from Oliver Nelson, and congas from Ray Barretto too – on cuts that include "Scram", "Cool Cool Daddy", "Ballad For Baby", "If You Are But A Dream", "But Not For Me", and "Love I've Found You". An earlier classic from The Beach Boys – and easily one of their best records from the prime sun and surf era for the group – with rave up rockers and some sweet ballads! So much as been written about the foreboding behind-the-scenes circumstances in Beach Boys lore, even during these early years, it can steal away from the more innocent charms if you allow it to – but don't! This is all about soaring, groovy harmonies and impeccable production – on tunes that include "I Get Around", "All Summer Long", "Hushabye", "Little Honda", "Wendy", "Carl's Big Chance", "Girls On The Beach", "Drive-In", "Don't Back Down" and more. There's a mix of styles here – some rough rocking numbers that are a bit stiff, mixed with some really amazing tunes that get at Brian Wilson's new sensitivities – tunes like "Girl Don't Tell Me", "You're So Good To Me", "Summer Means New Love", and "Let Him Run Wild" – all complicated in subtle ways, with a great sense of tension underneath. Capitol, Mid 60s. Used ... $4.99
Excellent pre-Pet Sounds work by The Beach Boys! Today is an overlooked gem in the Beach Boys' catalog – mostly because it features some bigger pop singles ("Do You Wanna Dance", "Help Me Baby"). However, there's also some incredible LP tracks with a very Pet Sounds-ish kind of approach to them – tracks like "Don't Hurt My Little Sister", "Please Let Me Wonder", "She Knows Me Too Well", and "In The Back Of My Mind", all of which are essential Beach Boys listening. There's a few other silly tracks on the record, though – as there are on the Summer Days LP – but that one also features a few nice moments, like "You're So Good To Me" and "Let Him Run Wild", both excellent Brian Wilson tunes! Plus, this CD also features 5 bonus tracks – making it a steal of a deal, with 29 cuts in all! CD

A really amazing little record – way more than usual for this sort of live recording – given that it features some very unique performances together by artists we've never heard on the same stage otherwise! The premise is simple, but wonderfully effective – in that the album brings together some of the leading lights of the Columbia/CBS jazz stable at the time – a massive lineup of talent from a few key generations in jazz, sounding surprisingly great hear together! All tracks are nice and long – and titles include a brilliant version of "Infant Eyes" by a quartet with Stan Getz on tenor and Bob James on piano; "Fried Bananas" with Dexter Gordon on tenor, Slide Hampton on trombone, Woody Shaw on trumpet, and George Duke on piano; "Bahama Mama" with Bob James on keyboards, Bobbi Humphrey on flute, Eric Gale and Steve Kahn on guitars, and Billy Cobham on drums – and the long jam session tracks "Montreux Summit", "Blues March", and "Andromeda" – which feature work from most of the players above, all working in one large group – plus added flute from Hubert Laws and Thijs Van Leer, percussion from Ralph Maconald, and bass from Alphonso Johnson. A wonderful follow-up to the first Montreux Summit album – and like that classic, a groundbreaking assemblage of some of the best jazz musicians of the 70s! The format here is slightly different – with more of a focus on smaller groupings of musicians, but still with a really fresh ear for unusual combinations – especially with players you're not always likely to hear together – all stretching out on some sweet longer tracks. Tunes include a version of "Moontrane" with Woody Shaw on trumpet, Dexter Gordon on tenor, Slide Hampton on trombone, and George Duke on Fender Rhodes; "Two Part Invention" with Bob James on piano and Hubert Laws on flute; "Kanon For Flutes", with work by Bob Militello and Thijs Van Leer on flutes, alongside Bob James on Fender Rhodes, Eric Gale on guitar, and Peter Erskine on drums; "Red Top" with Dexter Gordon and Stan Getz on tenor, and Maynard Ferguson and Woody Shaw on trumpet; "Rites Of Darkness" with George Duke on Fender Rhodes, Bob James on keyboards, and Steve Kahn on guitar; "Be Cool" with James on Fender Rhodes, Duke on keyboards, Bobbi Humphrey and Hubert Laws on flute, and Eric Gale and Steve Kahn on guitar; and a sweet take on James' "Night Crawler" – with Stan Getz on tenor, Bobbi Humphrey and Hubert Laws on flute, Eric Gale and Steve Kahn on guitars, and Bob James himself on Fender Rhodes! One of the last Cluster albums recorded for a long stretch – and a set that maybe makes us wonder what Moebius and Roedelius would have done, had they kept on working in this direction! It's almost as if the groundbreaking duo were listening to the creations of the younger generation that they had influenced – particularly the German new wave rising up around them – and they reach for slightly darker modes here, with some edgier electronics that come off almost in tuneful industrial territory – and we mean that before the "dance" was added to that style a few years later. And although you might worry that the collection of so many great talents on one stage might just create confusion – don't! The quality of the work is excellent – almost better than the best of the CTI studio sides, with a lean, clean sound that's really really tight – never overblown, just sweet electric funk with loads of great space for solo work. Art FarmerSummer Knows ... LP
East Wind/Inner City, 1976. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Gently graceful work from Art Farmer – and a wonderful example of the way he was expanding his talents in the 70s! The set's got a slow burning sensuality that seems to bring even more soul out of Farmer's work on flugelhorn than before – especially on the mellower cuts, which seem especially written as showcases for Art's masterful examples of understatement. But don't go thinking that the album's all ballads, because with a rhythm section that includes Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins, the tracks move along nicely, even when in a gentler mode. A great set from the Chicago scene – one recorded in the early 80s, but put together with a really timeless sound overall! The album's a rediscovery of tenorist Eddie Johnson – a player who'd been away from music for part of the 70s, but who returns beautifully here with a raspy tenor sound that would make labelmate Von Freeman proud. The session is nicely laidback – recorded with trumpet from Paul Serrano and piano from John Young – very relaxed and open, in the sort of mode that really lets a Chicago tenorist take off – which Johnson does, and wonderfully, on tunes that include "Blue Star", "The Choice", "Self Portrait", "Indian Summer", and "Splanky". Pianist Oliver Jones takes a page here from the book of Canadian countryman Oscar Peterson – and works here in a drum-less trio, with beautifully well-rounded support from Red Mitchell on bass and Herb Ellis on guitar! Jones is definitely his own sort of stylist on the keys, but the setting evokes some of the great modes that Ellis used when working with Peterson back in the day – although shaped by that growing sense of color that Herb picked up on his later Concord Records years, which really does a lot to illuminate the record next to the more pointed notes of Jones on the piano. The Jones/Lewis group could sometimes sound a bit clunky and overhashed – but on this set, they've got a surprisingly lyrical approach – free-thinking and easily grooving, but with room for complicated solos and complex rhythms. All tracks are originals by Thad Jones – and players include Roland Hanna on electric piano, David Spinozza on guitar, and a host of great talents on reeds and brass. A sweet soulful pairing of talents – the lovely vocals of Marlene and the warm fusion talents of Seawind – coming together here in a way that's mighty nice! You'll know Seawind for their albums on CTI from the mid 70s, and this rare Japanese-only set is equally nice, but in a very different way – as the group soar along nicely with a gently soulful vibe, backing up Marlene's lyrics in a style that's a bit like the sometimes soul cuts on Japanese fusion records from the time. The singer's got an ability to soar high, but also never get too cloying – and the tunes include a great remake of the Leon Ware/Richard Rudolph gem "Let Yourself Go" – plus "Summer Nights", "Try", "Semi Forgotten Movie", "A Love Too Strong", "I Could Dance Tonight", and "My Song". Hidehiko Matsumoto may have the nickname of "sleepy", but his playing is anything but – and at the time of this recording, he was easily one of the greatest saxophonist working the Japanese scene! The style of the album has Matsumoto right out front on most numbers – getting backing from piano, bass, and drums – but often in ways that are somewhat restrained and spacious, in the Three Blind Mice mode of the period. Sleepy plays his usual tenor sax, plus some great flute too – and titles range from mellow, introspective tunes that really showcase his lyrical side – to a few faster tunes that take off with a very nice edge. Titles include "Duke's Days", "Chasin The Blues", "You Don't Know What Love Is", "Typhoon", and "Right Down Step". CD

Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $19.99 24.00
Hidehiko "Sleepy" Matsumoto is a reedman who grabbed us strongly the first time we ever heard him play – on one of the first big band albums by Toshiko Akioshi in the 60s – and he's also one who continued to grow and refine his craft in the 70s, with an amazingly personal sound by the end of the decade! This album's one of Sleepy's best – the kind of set that makes him an instant heir to American giants like Sonny Sitt or Sonny Rollins – who he easily rivals for his ability to blow strong and long over the span of the extended tunes of the set – never failing to find new ideas in his solos, and always making us feel like we've just stumbled upon his genius all over again in the process! The group's a quartet – with Hideo Ichikawa on piano, Takashi Mizuhashi on bass, and Hideo Sekine on drums – and titles include the long "Back To The Sea", "Samba De Sun", and "Stella By Starlight" – plus "Round Midnight" and "Anaid". Great 70s work from Sachiko Nishida – a Japanese singer who first began recording in the early 60s, but who's matured here into a really great style – some of the currents of American soul and jazz that would inform the city pop generation, but balanced here with a style that occasionally echoes some of her older material too! Acorn/Grapefruit (UK), 1971. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A really dreamy little record, and one that really lives up to the ancient vibe of the title and cover – played by a combo who were one of the younger groups of the acid folk generation in the UK, and were also one of the most compelling! Oberon was formed by a group of school-aged chums who all shared a similar love of acoustic instrumentation and reworking the older roots of British music – which means that the tunes here are partly tradition, and partly their own creations, but with a very ancient vibe – performed on instrumentation that includes guitar, violin, bass, percussion, and flute. There's just a bit of electricity on the guitars at points, and a few tracks are instrumental – but overall, the music is very spare, spacious, and pastoral – maybe even more full-realized than some of their contemporaries on bigger labels. Titles include "Nottamun Town", "The Hunt", "Syrinx", "Peggy", "Summertime", "Time Past Time Come", "Mins Tirith", and "Epitaph". 2CD edition features a full bonus live concert from 1971 – seven more tracks!
