Brown SugarBrown Sugar Featuring Clydie King ... LP
Chelsea/Demon (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... About April 9, 2021 (delayed)
A great little record from Brown Sugar – a group who really soar here, thanks to the presence of Clydie King on lead vocals! King sung famously on many rock and soul sessions during the 60s and 70s – but she's a great talent in the spotlight, and really helps to give the record a lot of focus – uniting the group's mix of deep soul and southern elements – lots of burning underneath the rhythms, and horns compressed over the top – in a style that's a bit Muscle Shoals, but more restrained overall, and with a few moments that go for more of an east coast feel. Titles include "Soul Asylum", "Love Can Bring You Down", "Weep For Me", "Don't Hold Back", "Real Love", and "Moonlight & Taming You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Brown SugarI'm In Love With A Dreadlocks – Brown Sugar & The Birth Of Lovers Rock 1977 to 1980 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
The first collection we've ever seen to do justice to the Brown Sugar trio from the UK reggae scene of the late 70s – a group who do a fantastic job of merging older sweet soul styles with a new lovers' vibe, all in a mode that's completely sublime! The group's noteworthy as the starting place of Caron Wheeler, who'd later rise to great fame in Soul II Soul – and Carol Simms, who'd later rise on her own as Kofi – but even without that later legacy, the music here is completely wonderful – and is presented with detailed notes, in a set that collects all the singles the trio recorded at the time with Dennis Bovell and John "Brownie T" Kpiaye. Brown Sugar are clearly influenced by the sweeter side of American group soul style in the late 60s – and even cover a few cuts from that era – yet they also have this bad-stepping style that really offers up the strongest current of the London style of the period – the crisper crackle and rootsier production approach that was really showing a scene coming into its own. Titles include "Black Pride", "Our Reggae Music", "Hello Stranger", "You & Your Smiling Face", "Loving Dreadlocks Dub", "Confession Hurts", "Proud", "Do You Really Love Me", "Hurtin", "Run Away Love",a nd "Dreaming Of Zion". ✨✧ Sugar Pie De SantoGo Go Power – The Complete Chess Singles 1961 to 1966 ... CD
Chess/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A much-needed look at the mighty Sugar Pie DeSanto – a singer who really rocked Chess Records back in the 60s! DeSanto came to the label already boasting one hell of a groove – a rock-solid sense of rhythm that made all of her tunes groovers right from the get-go – and a raw vocal power that easily rivaled, if not beat, that of Etta James – her labelmate at Chess, and partner on a few duet tracks here! The collection's a non-stop soul party throughout – as upbeat as Northern Soul, but with plenty of deep soul elements as well – and it's the first time many of these cuts have been brought together on CD, and certainly never before as wonderful as this. Kent serves up some great notes and vintage photos with the package – the latter of which show Sugar Pie in action on stage, clearly one of the sexiest singers to work the circuit back in the 60s! Titles include "In The Basement (parts 1 & 2)", "Soulful Dress", "Witch For A Night", "Ask Me", "Good Timin", "Mr & Mrs", "Mama Didn't Raise No Fools", "Crazy Lovin", "There's Gonna Be Trouble", "Jump In My Chest", "Somewhere Down The Line", "Use What You Got", "Never Love A Stranger", "I Love You So Much", "Go Go Power", and "I Don't Wanna Fuss". Sugar MinottSugar Minott At Studio One ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $32.99 36.99
Seminal sounds from the mighty Sugar Minott – a singer who's sweet-voiced style was perfect for the changes going on at Studio One in the late 70s! Sugar grew up on the soulful styles of the rocksteady years – and here, as Studio One begins to step into some dancehall modes, his vocals provide a perfect link with the past – which sometimes comes from the way the label was reworking older rhythms and melodies in a subtle way – often with new lyrics from Minott that really transform the tunes! Currents of early dancehall and versioning flow through the mix of work here – and the set is a great illustration of this key moment in the evolution of reggae. Titles include "Vanity", "Please Be True", "Hang On Natty", "Jahovia", "Try Love", "Give A Hand", "Is It True", "Love Gonna Pack Up", "Give Me Jah Jah", "Party Time", "Jah Almighty", "Jah Jah Children", and "Change Your Ways". Sugar BillySuper Duper Love ... CD
Fast Track/P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $16.99
A classic indie cooker from Sugar Billy – a bit funky, a bit clubby – and a really great batch of grooves done in a pre-disco mode! The tracks are all pretty darn upbeat – somewhat warmer than the funk of Fatback or Kool & The Gang, but still with a nicely rough-edged feel overall – one that mixes snapping rhythms with Billy's slightly raspy vocals – all in a groove that's somewhat unique, and which is almost a hybrid of southern soul modes and some of the indie styles bubbling out of the New York scene in the early 70s. Arrangements are by Jimmy Roach, who definitely helps the group groove – and a young Marcus Belgrave is actually in the group on Trumpet! Titles include the classic "Super Duper Love (parts 1 & 2)", plus "Treat Me Like You Don't Know Me", "Love Bug", "Sugar Pie", "Too Much Too Soon", and "Believe In Me". CD also features a great bonus track – the single-only "Freak & You Shall Find", presented in the long version! CD

Sugar Hill, 1981. Very Good ... $8.99
One of the first full albums from the Sugarhill Gang – and a good sampling of their early tracks for Sugarhill! Includes the group's classic remake of "Apache" – complete with breaks stolen from the Incredible Bongo Band – plus the cuts "Funk Box" and "On The Money", which both have a compressed 80s groove soul sort of approach. Also features "Showdown", a classic old school battle track, recorded with the Furious 5 – plus the cuts "8th Wonder", "Hot Hot Summer Day", and "Kick It Live From 9 to 5". LP, Vinyl record album

D'AngeloBrown Sugar ... CD
Capitol, 1995. Used ... $2.99
A record that was an instant classic from the moment it was first released – and a set that's still pretty darn pleasing all these many years later! At a time when mainstream soul was often too smooth or too poppy, D'Angelo came along and not only found a way to return the music to the years of its power with singers like Al Green or Marvin Gaye – but also managed to bring in some of the best hip hop elements of his generation too, at a level that was far more successful than most other blends that had been tried before! Production is nice and lean, and super-crispy – at a level that so many folks are still copying all these years later – and the set's full of classics that include "Cruisin", "When We Get By", "Smooth", "Me & Those Dreamin Eyes Of Mine", "Brown Sugar", "Alright", and "Jonz In My Bonz". ✨✧ Moonfires (Alex Puddu)Black Sugar ... CD
Al Dente (France), 2015. Used ... $7.99
A great new showcase for the music of Alex Puddu – the contemporary groover who's given us some wonderful music over the years – including his famous Golden Age Of Danish Pornography sets! This album's more of a back-to-basics affair for Puddu – recorded with a tight combo, and a very classic approach to mod jazz and funk – performed by a group that's very heavy on keyboards alongside sweet riffing guitar from Alex! The sound is tight, but never too smooth – and there's a few additional horns thrown into the mix, to augment the top end alongside the guitar, clavinet, Hammond, and Fender Rhodes – all with a sweet blend that's almost got a 70s blacksploitation vibe at times, but a bit looser and more spontaneous too. Puddu wrote, arranged, and produced – and most cuts are instrumental, but a few feature vocals from singer Duane Hobson. Titles include "Sexy Lady", "You Got Me Funky", "Such A Bad Girl", "Black Sugar", "Love Rollercoaster", "Losing My Mind", and "Feel The Heat". CD

Luv N' Haight, Mid 70s. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $7.99
Funky soul from Betty Padgett and Arthur Foy – resurfacing thanks to our friends at Luv N Haight/Ubiquity! "Sugar Daddy" by Betty Padgett is a wonderful little slice of sunny funk and soulful 70s sounds – she has a really sweet voice, and the tune kicks off with funky drums and hand percussion, punctuated by horns and flute! The tune has a great hook, too, all around first class material. The flip is "Get Up & Dance" by Arthur Foy, kind of a slow rolling left field funky soul tune, with a unique hazy vibe – with odd keys and synth sounds, and an otherwordly vibe that sounds like it's influenced by Roy Ayers productions of the mid-to-late 70s, but really in a smoked out realm all its own! 12-inch, Vinyl record

The whole thing's as funky as funky can be – the kind of a record that would be selling for $300 if it came out in the 70s, and which is even nicer to have at a low everyday price! Titles include "Shot Down", "Modern Jive", "Funky So & So", "Take It As It Come", "Pure Cane", "Promised Land", "Country Girl", "La Culebra", "Down To It", "Honey Wagon", and "Bosco's Blues". Stanley TurrentineCherry/Don't Mess With Mister T/Sugar Man (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CTI/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99 16.99
A trio of classic CTI Records albums from tenorist Stanley Turrentine – with bonus tracks too! First up is Cherry – one of the best CTI albums from the early 70s – and one of Stanley Turrentine's funkiest records as well! The album's got a sharper edge than most other Turrentine albums of the time – a quality that goes beyond Stan's already soulful approach to the tenor, and which brings in some tight changes and more pronounced rhythms that really give the best cuts a great groove! The group's a sextet – with Bob James on electric piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, Cornell Dupree on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums – and titles include a monster version of Weldon Irvine's "Sister Sanctified" – a great funk tune that's probably best known as the sample for "My Philosophy" by BDP! Other tracks include "Speedball", "Cherry", and "The Revs". On Don't Mess With Mister T, Stanley Turrentine meets Bob James – on a record that's one of the 70s classics on CTI! Bob James handles the arrangements – with that laidback, mellowfunky approach to jazz that he helped pioneer at the time – lots of modal chords in the rhythms, and these wonderfully soulful solos by the great Stan himself! James plays keyboards on the set – and Harold Mabern adds some piano too – and the lineup also includes the mighty Eric Gale on guitar, and Idris Muhammad on drums. Titles include the great title cut – a remake of Marvin Gaye's "Don't Mess With Mister T", plus "Too Blue", "Two For T", and "I Could Never Repay Your Love". Sugar Man is a classic set from Stanley "Sugar Man" Turrentine – a nickname the reedman had at the time, given the success of his famous CTI Records version of "Sugar"! This set follows in that same great mode – jazzy, but a bit funky too – although couched with this gentle sense of soul that's perfect for that spacious style of soloing that Turrentine perfected over the years – a way of blowing openly, and without too much fuss – but managing to hit all the right notes along the way! There's a great glow to the whole record – an excellent easygoing sense of soul – and titles include an incredible reading of "Vera Cruz", done with Deodato on piano, and at a breakaway speed that's just great, and worth the price of the record alone! Other tracks feature piano by Harold Mabern or organ by Butch Cornell – and titles include "The Stretch", "Just As I Am", and "Pieces Of Dreams". Bonus tracks include "The More I See You", "Don't Mess With Mister T (alt)", "Mississippi City", and "Harlem Dawn". CD

The midnight sugar here comes from pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto – who's playing with a soulful, bluesy sort of style – one that reminds us a bit of Ray Bryant back in the 60s, but which also comes across here with a fair bit of lighter, lyrical touches as well! As with other Three Blind Mice albums from the time, the tracks here are all longish and open-ended – recorded with a nice sort of brightness that breaks from other jazz traditions, and moving in surprising ways at each new twist and turn. The group also features the great Isao Fukui on bass and Tetsujiro Obara on drums – and titles include "I'm A Fool To Want You", "Midnight Sugar", "The Nearness Of You", and "Sweet Georgia Blues". CD

✨✧ Regional GarlandMixed Sugar – The Complete Works 1970 to 1987 ... CD
Now Again, 1970s/1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic anthology of Flint, MI soul great Regional Garland – 70s soul empires were built on lesser talent than you'll find on this set put together by Egon & Now Again! Garland is a performer, producer, songwriter and arranger of whom we were most familiar with for his work with the group Hunt's Determination – a taste of which is included here, along with Regional's recordings with The Perfections, 21st Generations, Mixed Sugar, Brilliance and others. Even the few Hunts Determination records we were familiar with show a fairly staggering stylistic range, while holding together as a tight whole – and that's all the more impressive with a broader collection of work with varying personnel here. The heart of the collection is early-to-late 70s recordings, from dancefloor soul, funk and strains of disco later in the decade – revelatory stuff for us. We knew the man was good, but, damn! The set also features several mid 80s recordings with that era's synth textured sound with the 70s soul vocals surprisingly well. Includes "I Need Love" & "Hey James" with 21st Generations, "Get On Down" & "Girl You Better Hurry" with The Perfections, "I Need Love" and "Are We Through" with Hunts Determination, "15 Ain't Young No More", "It's A Bad Feeling" and "Disco Jam Bam Bam" with Mixed Sugar, the previously unreleased "Gangster Girl" and "I'm Sad We've Broke Up", "I'm Falling In Love" with Vann & Reggie, "Hit Girl" with Brilliance and more. Nice notes with personnel, and a couple bonus versions "I Need Love". CD

Ennio MorriconeMalamondo (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sugar/Decca (Italy), 1964. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Fantastic early soundtrack material from Ennio Morricone – penned for one of the "mondo" films of the time – a 1964 shockumentary on the state of Italian youth! As such, it's got lots of short jazzy tunes that run at a pretty fast groove, ostensibly to show the dissipation of the kids as they learn how to party – almost inspired by the realist style of early 60s TV, with a mix of bold themes, and more somber, contemplative ones. I Cantori Moderni sing wordless dreamy vocals on some numbers – and the shorter tracks offer up a very different sound of Morricone than you might expect – one that's more linked to some of his earlier pop productions in Italy – and which really gives you an idea of the depth of his early talents, even before the spaghetti western boom! Titles include "Twist Delle Zitelle", "La City", "Matricole", "Senza Freno", "Le Facce", "Penso A Te", "Bianco E Nero", and "La Prima Volta". Features a whopping 32 tracks in all – lots of unreleased bonus tracks! CD

Sugar/Decca (Italy), Early 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99 39.99
One of the first big international soundtracks to come from the Italian scene in the 60s – the start of a great run that would continue through the decade, although maybe not with results as strongly as this! The score is for a strange documentary-like film (the title means "World Gone To The Dogs"), and most of the tunes are dramatic – with a sweeping orchestral feel that has a few light instrumental moments. The big fame of this one is that it contains the theme that went onto become the 60s vocal standard "More" – but in this version, it's kind of submerged, and taken at a much slower pace – a theme that appears here and there, but also mixed with other really lively numbers too – always shifting the mood, to match the different settings in the film. Titles include "Free Way", "Models In Blue", "Life Savers Girls", "The Last Flight", "Dog Heat", "Cargo Cult", and "Purgatory". New expanded version – features a whopping 36 tracks in all – way more than the original album! LP, Vinyl record album

Carlo RustichelliSei Donne Per L'Assassino (aka Blood & Black Lace) (grey vinyl pressing) ... LP
Sugar/Spikerot (Italy), 1964. New Copy Gatefold ... $39.99
A great Italian soundtrack from that early 60s stretch when jazz was still a very strong part of film scoring – a mode that's borrowed from the French new wave, but used by Italian composers in cooler, groovier styles – as you'll hear in this excellent overlooked gem! The style is more like early 60s Piero Umiliani or Piero Piccioni than some of the standard work from Carlo Rustichelli – and the composer has a fantastic ear for unusual sounds, the kind of Piccioni inflections of horns with more unusual tones and colors – which continues even on some of the mellower, moodier numbers in the package. This is the first-ever vinyl release of the material – with a whopping 31 tracks in all! LP, Vinyl record album

Three female singers/MC's with backing by the Sugarhill Gang Band – and rhymes that sound like they might have been written by the Sugarhill Gang. Maybe it's not up to the standards of other early female MC's like Sha Rock of the Funky 4 +1, but this is more like a 1979-era slow-tempo funk/dance track than a straight hip hop record. 12-inch, Vinyl record

A mighty look at one of the first great groups in hip hop – maybe not the originators of the style, but certainly the one to get some of the biggest exposure – thanks to the work of Sugar Hill Records, and some very catchy tunes! The Sugarhill Gang were one of the key groups involved in taking the spirit of South Bronx street parties to the mainstream outside the big city – and given all the hits on the set, you can bet that they did a pretty great job – on titles that include the very long original version of "Rapper's Delight", plus "8th Wonder", "Apache", "The Lover In You", "The Word Is Out", "Girls", "Kick It Live From 9 To 5", "Livin In The Fast Lane", and "Hot Hut Summer Day". Also includes "Showdown" – which has them meeting up with The Furious Five – and "Work Work The Body", with Big Bank Hank, Kory-O, and Wonder Mike! LP, Vinyl record album

An impeccable collection of work from one of the greatest soundtrack talents ever – a package that brings together a range of rare work from the 70s, including a number of previously-unreleased tracks! The music does have some of the dark tinges promised by the title, but this is less the atonal, avant Morricone than the more sonically mindblowing side of the composer – all sorts of unusual ways to use and record familiar instruments, offbeat combinations of notes and sounds, and an overall ear for the scope of the music that always leaves us breathless when we hear material this strong! Roy AyersVirgin Ubiquity – Unreleased Recordings 1976 to 1981 ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
It's like a dream come true – 13 previously unissued recordings by Roy Ayers, all from the height of his glory years on Polydor! Roy's work from this time is some of our favorite ever – a burning blend of jazz, soul, and funk – handled with impeccable charm, and a level of soul that few other artists of the time ever matched. Roy's genius was strongly documented at the time by a series of excellent Polydor albums – but there was also a heck of a lot of great material that never saw the light of day, and which is every bit as great as the classics that we've come to know and love over the years. Hearing this set is incredible – like upping our already-massive appreciation of Roy's talents, and like finding a lost corner of soul music history that nobody's ever heard before. The tunes are all amazing – a great blend of jazzy soul, mellow soul, and dancefloor groovers – and the package is only the tip of the iceberg, from what we've been told! The full album does a great job to not cross over too much with the 12" singles previously issued in this "Virgin" series – and titles include "What's The T", "I Really Love You", "Sugar", "Mystery Of Love", "Green & Gold", "Brand New Feeling", "I Did It In Seattle", "I Just Wanna Give It Up", "Together Forever", "Boogie Down", "I Am Your Mind", and a great alternate version of "Mystic Voyage"! ✨✧ Vashti BunyanSome Things Just Stick In Your Mind – Singles & Demos 1964 to 1967 ... LP
DiCristina, Mid 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 19.98
Beautiful early work from British singer Vashti Bunyan – an important figure in the acid folk scene at the end of the 60s, heard here on some really wonderful work from a few years before! Some of the tracks have a really trippy style, and others are a bit more like conventional Brit girl pop of the time – but given a very weird twist overall, with a sound that's quite hard to describe! Vashti's vocals have these really dark qualities overall – and even when the backings are fuller (which often they are not), there's a sad, earthy feel to her singing. But equally great is her guitar work – heard with more prominence on most of the album's previously-unissued tracks from mid 60s tapes. Bunyan plays with these warm harmonics that kind of nestle and bristle underneath her vocals – pushing the tunes up with a sense of brightness in contrast to the voice – almost in a Nick Drake sort of way (and trust us, we don't throw around comparisons to his music easily!) The package is a wonderful look at these almost-lost years of Vashti's career – and it features both sides of her Decca and Columbia singles, an unreleased Immediate single, and a lot more tracks pulled from rare tapes from 1964, 1966, and 1967! Set features 25 tracks that include "Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind", "Train Song", "Love Song", "Winter Is Blue", "Leave Me", "How Do I Know", "Go Before Dawn", "Girl's Song In Winter", "Don't Believe", "17 Pink Sugar Elephants", "Someday", and "I Know". Verve (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... About June 16, 2021
A stunner from Kenny Burrell – one of his most sophisticated and soulful sessions of the 60s! Kenny's working here with the ultra-cool arranger Johnny Pate – best known for his work with Curtis Mayfield, and his 70s soundtrack fame – but a heck of a creative talent when it comes to a jazz session like this! For the record, Pate's created these spare little backdrops – not nearly as full as those penned by Don Sebesky or Claus Ogerman – and with a gentle sort of grooving quality that really pushes Kenny along nicely. Burrell's guitar is very strongly upfront in the mix – working chromatic magic at a level hardly ever matched again on record! Side one features the extended "Asphalt Canyon Suite" – a magnificent tune that's simply sublime – and side two features 5 shorter tracks, "Things Ain't What They Used To Be", "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", "Please Send Me Someone To Love", "Going To Jim & Andy's", and "Sugar Hill". The second smoking album from Captain Sky – a Windy City funk legend, and one who's cut from some of the same cloth as Bootsy Collins or Rick James! Like both of those artists, the Captain's a pretty imposing figure, with a bit of future flash to his looks – and while he uses lots of the basslines that might tie him to Bootsy and the P-Funk universe, he's also got a groove that mixes in some of the more sophisticated modes you'd know from the Chicago scene at the time! There's almost a late Curtom feel to the record – tight funk, a bit faster than early in the decade, but still not really disco – and with some mellow midtempo tracks that balance things out beautifully – and really show Sky evolving past the style of his first record. A much-loved classic from the 90s – served up by a duo of Japanese-American women who have a wonderfully weird outlook on their music! Most of the tunes here are named after food, and that's the main theme of the record too – carried off in these tunes that are spare and playful – often with lyrics that are sing-song, but with a lot more charm than you might expect! Instrumentation and production are from that moment when the indie scene was discovering beats and influences from hip hop – but again, that aspect is nicely soft-pedaled here, so that it never gets in the way of the charm of the tunes. Ronnie Cuber's always a hell of a swinger, but he sounds especially nice here – really letting his baritone hit some bold, soulful sounds in the company of Hammond organist Brian Charette, guitarist Ed Cherry, and drummer Adam Nussbaum! The record's got this soul jazz vibe that's a bit different than some of Cuber's other records – and features a number of tunes penned by older heroes of the genre – like Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, Stanley Turrentine, and others – which makes for a set of songs that has Ronnie sounding completely wonderful all the way through. There's few cats who could ever make a baritone sax sound this wonderful – and we think you'll agree after hearing tracks that include "Four", "Battery Blues", "Bluesette", "Coming Home Baby", "Sugar", and "Motivation". ✨✧ Tommy James & the ShondellsCrimson & Clover ... LP
Roulette, 1968. Very Good+ ... $34.99
A sublime pop psych classic from Tommy James & The Shondells – a record that's quite different than some of the janglier work the group was issuing a few years before – and a perfect example of the way that just a few slight studio tricks can really transform a record! The tunes are all short and focused, but produced with lots of cool reverb, echo, and fuzzy touches on the sides – never overindulgent, and still plenty tuneful – but with so many weird little edges that they come through with a sound that's still pretty darn fresh after all these years – even if you think you know these guys from their hits. Titles include "Kathleen McArthur", "Do Something To Me", "I Am A Tangerine", "Smokey Roads", and "Breakaway" – plus the classic hits "Sugar On Sunday", "Crystal Blue Persuasion", and "Crimson & Clover". The rare second album from Clydie King – recorded at a time when she was lending her backing vocals to artists like The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, and Humble Pie – but a set that firmly puts Clydie in the lead! King's got an amazing style of singing – deep and raspy at one moment, with key southern soul roots – yet also totally tight and together, too – with a focus that really shines on the album's more upbeat tracks – groovers that almost have an east coast club vibe at times, quite similar to material that Clydie recorded with the group Brown Sugar! Titles include "Rushing To Meet You", "Loving You Is So Easy", "Steal Your Love Away", "Punish Me", "Our Love Is Special", and "Morning Sun". CD

Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
A really wonderful album from trumpeter Josh Lawrence – a very strong-voiced talent who's got a way of being bright and sharp at the same time, and who can always bring lots of his own compositional strengths to bear as well! The core group is a quartet – with Lawrence blowing beautifully over piano from Zaccai Curtis, bass from Luques Curtis, and drums from Anwar Marshall – and the set also features some great alto from Caleb Curtis on two tracks, balancing out the sound of Josh in this strongly soulful spirit! Brian Charette brings some organ to the album's final track – a great remake of the Earth Wind & Fire tune "That's The Way Of The World" – and all other titles are Lawrence originals, with tunes that include "We're Happiest Together", "Composition #2", "Wind", "Earth", "Sugar Hill Stroll", and "Sunset In Santa Barbara". Little RichardKing Of Rock & Roll (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Reprise/Omnivore, 1971. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A much rootsier set than some of Little Richard's other work for Reprise Records – a record that almost goes back to the old days, but via the hipper styles of the early 70s! HB Barnum arranged and produced the set, but the groove is less funkier than some of Barnum's other work of the time – a bit more rockish in some of the rhythms and instrumentation, which is no surprise considering the title – with a nod back towards late 50s modes, but in that new-roots way that Warner was hitting with other artists of the period. Richard's vocals hold up very well in the setting – and apart from the original tunes "Green Power" and "King Of Rock & Roll", the album features versions of "Midnight Special", "Dancing In The Street", "Brown Sugar", and "Born On The Bayou". Includes 6 bonus tracks – "Open Up The Red Sea", "Still Miss Liza Jane", "In The Name (version 2)", "Why Don't You Love Me", and the instrumentals "Mississippi" and "Settin The Wods On Fire". CD

Barbara LynnMovin On A Groove – Blues & Soul Situation (with bonus track) ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2003. New Copy ... $19.99
Barbara Lynn was one of the all-time female soul greats of the 60s – a really strong, independent artist who was more than just a singer – as she also played guitar on her records and wrote a fair bit of her own material too – a quality that really set Barbara apart from the pack, and helped her continue making great music for many years longer than most of her contemporaries! That legacy definitely continues here – in a really wonderful set that was recorded at the start of the century, but with a nicely stripped-down vibe, and a lean quality that really keeps all of Barbara's best deep soul styles in place! There's none of the too-lofty arrangements or the overblown attempts to be "authentic" that sometimes happen when an older soul singer comes into a contemporary studio – just clear, focused work by a southern soul legend, still sounding her best. Titles include "He Ain't Gonna Do Right", "You Don't Sleep At Night", "Matt's Hat", "I'll Suffer", "Sugar Coated Love", "I'm A Good Woman", "He Ain't Gonna Do Right", and "I'm Not Doing Nothing Wrong". A great bit of Memphis funk from the 70s! The 60s version of The Mar-Keys was more of a rocking instrumental group – but the 70s version has a much harder sound, and a lot more of a tendency to funk things up. This album features them running through instrumental versions of a number of older Memphis soul hits – like "Soul Man" or "Heads or Tails" – plus some tasty original numbers, like "Black", "One With Sugar", and "Coffee Cup". All tracks have a horn-heavy sound with a nice deep bottom – and plenty of good work on the guitar! CD

One of the sexiest covers ever to grace a Wynton Marsalis album, but thankfully a record that's still got plenty of real jazz roots – and not the smoother sound you might expect from the image on the front! The group here is Wynton's expanded septet – a combo with Marcus Roberts on piano, Wes Anderson on alto, Wycliffe Gordon on trombone, and Todd Williams on tenor, soprano, and clarinet – all in far-reaching modes of jazz expression that often have an imagistic, soundtrack quality – one that echoes years and places past. Wynton plays piano, and also speaks to introduce "Monologue For Sugar Cane & Sweetie Pie" – and other titles include "And The Band Played On", "Brother Veal", "Sometimes It Goes Like That", and "The Jubilee Suite". Ogun (UK), 1993. New Copy ... $14.99
An incredibly spiritual session from percussionist Louis Moholo and his ensemble Viva La Black – recorded on the occasion of a series of concerts in Moholo's homeland of South Africa – and done in a way that's as much a document of the group's trip as it is a recording of the music in the concerts. Many of the tracks are shorter passages that flow together with longer ones – piecing together the warm spirit and soulful expression allowed to the group during the tour. And the music itself shares in a heritage that runs back through the 60s work of Mingus and Roland Kirk, the 70s experiments of the AACM, and the rich jazz-in-exile work of Moholo himself! Instrumentation includes percussion, trumpet, saxes, piano, and bass – plus vocals from all the members of the group – and titles include "Use Less Sugar & Stir Like Hell", "Volunteered Slavery", "Woza", "Nikosi", "End Of Man", "Dudu P", "I'll Look All Over Afrika For You", "Drum Choir", and "Joyful Noise". Great work from a group who really know how to open up their sound – a larger ensemble who might have sounded like an Afro Funk combo at one time, but who've really done a lot to find their own special groove! The mix of sharp instrumentation, percussion, and horns could have just gotten a slavish Fela-styled treatment – as with so many other groups of the past decade – but instead, these guys really expand the sound, change the rhythms, and open the door to plenty of contemporary soul and jazz influences too! The result is this warmly glowing sound that shines a special light on these London luminaries – a really collaborative album that also features work from the legendary Mulatu Astatke, and vocals from a few different singers who each get time in the spotlight. Lalo SchifrinSudden Impact ... CD
Warner/Aleph, 1983. New Copy ... About April 15, 2021
Lalo Schifrin's dark score for the Sudden Impact – the forth film in the Dirty Harry series – and a surprising gem from the early 80s! The sound here isn't as archetypal 70s funk as the previous installments, but it's still Schifrin at his best – a mix of fuller orchestrations and more stripped-down instrumentation – often served up with a nice undercurrent of tension and a few odd twists and turns! The styles are more 80s than 70s, but still have a lot more warmth than most of Lalo's soundtrack contemporaries – and with Schifrin conducting the players for the date, you can bet that the maestro's still got a good deal of control over his sound. There's some nice woodwind passages mixed in with the fuller strings – and titles include "Main Title", "Too Much Sugar", "Target Practice", "The Road To Sao Paulo", "Robbery Suspect", "Ginley's Bar", "You've Come A Long Way", "Darkness", "Crazy", and "Hot Shot Cop". The first-ever full collection of all the groovy singles The Searchers recorded for the Pye Records label in the 60s – a 32 track set that includes both the a and b-side of every 7" release for the label! The Searchers were one of the leading lights of the early British invasion – a group who could harmonize as well as The Beatles, and who had a similar knack for turning out catchy tunes that packed plenty of punch, and which were a nicely stripped-down contrast to some of the more overblown production of American pop of the time! Maybe the grooviest collection of work we've ever seen from the lovely Nancy Sinatra – a set that features some of her hits, but also includes a lot more material that's much more obscure – and which shows that Nancy was a hell of a song stylist, far from the charts! The core of the work features Sinatra's fantastic collaborations with Lee Hazlewood – the producer who created a darkness in her sound that moved her far from simple pop – and who sometimes joined her in duets, with a mature, adult quality that was dripping with sensuality! This set was recorded during the time that Sylvia had a very successful run with her New Jersey group of soul labels like All Platinum and Stang – and it's a monument to her breathy sexy style, and is probably one of the raunchiest records to hit the top of the charts in the early 70s. The hit single "Pillow Talk" was bedroom fodder for couples all over the world – but the whole record's pretty darn nice, and equally sexy! A rarity from 1968 – Mike Westbrook's 2nd album, and a seminal work in the development of his messed-up large group style. On the outside, this is a big band recording, featuring a lineup of great Brit players that includes John Surman, Mike Osborne, Paul Rutherford, and others. Yet although Westbrook has clearly been influenced by modern large group arrangers like Gil Evans and Mingus, he's also throwing in a lot of New York avant ideas here, mixed with some of the brilliant cultural crossover styles that were brewing in London at the time. The record's tough to describe, but it's got an amazing mix of styles that rumbles through a range of material that includes originals like "The Few", "We Salute You", and "Take Me Back" – plus odd covers like "Sugar", "Girl From Ipanema", and "Lover Man".
