Brown SugarBrown Sugar Featuring Clydie King ... LP
Chelsea/Demon (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A great little record from Brown Sugar – a group who really soar here, thanks to the presence of Clydie King on lead vocals! King sung famously on many rock and soul sessions during the 60s and 70s – but she's a great talent in the spotlight, and really helps to give the record a lot of focus – uniting the group's mix of deep soul and southern elements – lots of burning underneath the rhythms, and horns compressed over the top – in a style that's a bit Muscle Shoals, but more restrained overall, and with a few moments that go for more of an east coast feel. Titles include "Soul Asylum", "Love Can Bring You Down", "Weep For Me", "Don't Hold Back", "Real Love", and "Moonlight & Taming You". LP, Vinyl record album

Burnt Sugar ArkestraAngels Over Oakanda ... CD
Avantgroidd, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99
Wonderfully righteous work from Burnt Sugar Arkestra – a group who've been giving us great records for years, but who are maybe even more important to the scene than ever before! The core of the record is the long title track – a very jazzy tune that builds up over loops set down by composer Greg Tate, with a flowing, snakey vibe that allows for plenty of long trumpet, tenor, flute, and alto solos over the guitars and Fender Rhodes that work the rhythms – maybe almost in electric Miles territory, but more laidback. That tune is then reworked on a number of variations that are very different – mostly instrumental, as the main track – but finishing up with a bit of vocals near the end of the record – a great contribution from singer Lisala Beatty! Titles include "Angels Over Oakanda", "Repatriation Of The Midnight Moores", "Oakanda Overdrive", and "Lisala Oer Inna Oakanda". CD

✨✧ Sugar MinottSugar Minott At Studio One ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Seminal sounds from the mighty Sugar Minott – a singer who's sweet-voiced style was perfect for the changes going on at Studio One in the late 70s! Sugar grew up on the soulful styles of the rocksteady years – and here, as Studio One begins to step into some dancehall modes, his vocals provide a perfect link with the past – which sometimes comes from the way the label was reworking older rhythms and melodies in a subtle way – often with new lyrics from Minott that really transform the tunes! Currents of early dancehall and versioning flow through the mix of work here – and the set is a great illustration of this key moment in the evolution of reggae. Titles include "Vanity", "Please Be True", "Hang On Natty", "Jahovia", "Try Love", "Give A Hand", "Is It True", "Love Gonna Pack Up", "Give Me Jah Jah", "Party Time", "Jah Almighty", "Jah Jah Children", and "Change Your Ways". ✨✧ Sugar Pie De SantoGo Go Power – The Complete Chess Singles 1961 to 1966 ... CD
Chess/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the mighty Sugar Pie DeSanto – a singer who really rocked Chess Records back in the 60s! DeSanto came to the label already boasting one hell of a groove – a rock-solid sense of rhythm that made all of her tunes groovers right from the get-go – and a raw vocal power that easily rivaled, if not beat, that of Etta James – her labelmate at Chess, and partner on a few duet tracks here! The collection's a non-stop soul party throughout – as upbeat as Northern Soul, but with plenty of deep soul elements as well – and it's the first time many of these cuts have been brought together on CD, and certainly never before as wonderful as this. Kent serves up some great notes and vintage photos with the package – the latter of which show Sugar Pie in action on stage, clearly one of the sexiest singers to work the circuit back in the 60s! Titles include "In The Basement (parts 1 & 2)", "Soulful Dress", "Witch For A Night", "Ask Me", "Good Timin", "Mr & Mrs", "Mama Didn't Raise No Fools", "Crazy Lovin", "There's Gonna Be Trouble", "Jump In My Chest", "Somewhere Down The Line", "Use What You Got", "Never Love A Stranger", "I Love You So Much", "Go Go Power", and "I Don't Wanna Fuss". Regional GarlandMixed Sugar – The Complete Works 1970 to 1987 ... CD
Now Again, 1970s/1980s. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
A fantastic anthology of Flint, MI soul great Regional Garland – 70s soul empires were built on lesser talent than you'll find on this set put together by Egon & Now Again! Garland is a performer, producer, songwriter and arranger of whom we were most familiar with for his work with the group Hunt's Determination – a taste of which is included here, along with Regional's recordings with The Perfections, 21st Generations, Mixed Sugar, Brilliance and others. Even the few Hunts Determination records we were familiar with show a fairly staggering stylistic range, while holding together as a tight whole – and that's all the more impressive with a broader collection of work with varying personnel here. The heart of the collection is early-to-late 70s recordings, from dancefloor soul, funk and strains of disco later in the decade – revelatory stuff for us. We knew the man was good, but, damn! The set also features several mid 80s recordings with that era's synth textured sound with the 70s soul vocals surprisingly well. Includes "I Need Love" & "Hey James" with 21st Generations, "Get On Down" & "Girl You Better Hurry" with The Perfections, "I Need Love" and "Are We Through" with Hunts Determination, "15 Ain't Young No More", "It's A Bad Feeling" and "Disco Jam Bam Bam" with Mixed Sugar, the previously unreleased "Gangster Girl" and "I'm Sad We've Broke Up", "I'm Falling In Love" with Vann & Reggie, "Hit Girl" with Brilliance and more. Nice notes with personnel, and a couple bonus versions "I Need Love". CD

Carmen McRaeCarmen McRae Live At Sugar Hill – San Francisco ... CD
Time/Solid (Japan), 1962. Used ... $14.99
A wonderful set by Carmen McRae – captured at San Francisco's Sugar Hill in 1962 – backed by a tight trio! Carmen is in sweet form here, very loose and and wise, and the group knows just how to fill out the sound. She scats loosely on the opening "Sunday", nearly hits a weep on "What Kind Of Fool I Am", and actually manages to breathe some life into "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" – no mean feat! The players include Norman Simmons on piano, Victor Sproles on bass, and Stu Martin on the kit. Other tracks include a playful "A Foggy Day", "Let There Be Love", "This Is All I Ask", "Thou Swell", "It Never Entered My My Mind" and "Make Someone Happy". CD

Rocky MizellRocky Mizell & The Sugar Rock Band ... CD
Drive/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $9.99
Massive Miami grooves from Robert "Rocky" Mizell – not one of the Mizell brothers from the west coast, but a Florida artist with a sound that's equally nice! The album's the only one we've ever seen from Rocky, and it's got a sweet TK Records groove all the way through – rhythms that are definitely on the funkier side of Miami soul, arranged by Rocky himself, and produced to perfection by Willie Clarke! The tunes are all originals – mostly collaborations between Mizell and Clarke – and the album's got a great way of sounding smooth while still keeping things funky – that perfect Miami balance that would soon disappear when things got a bit more commercial. Titles include "Shake Your Body Down", "This Must Be Love", "Never Never Girl", "Hey Sexy Dancer", "Take It Easy Babe", and "Come To Me". CD

Ray Olan Y Su SasonSugar On Sunday ... CD
Alegre, 1969. Used ... $28.99
A lost bit of late 60s Latin – with a really soulful feel! The band has an extremely strong instrumental sound, with a twin trombone lineup that's nice and tight – and they work with lots of dark descending chord progressions, spinning out tunes that bubble in blue notes, and nicely blend together bits of jazz, Latin soul, and some of the straighter Latin approaches that were taking root in the early salsa years. Most tracks have Spanish language vocals by Luisito Alvarez – and the record's filled with great tracks like "Sex", "Esa Mujer", "Mi Guajira", "Sugar On Sunday", and the firey "El Musico". CD

The group's organ/sax sound has never sounded so great – and it's pumped up even further here from some added guest instrumentation, including drums from Bernard Purdie, plus vocals on a number of cuts from deep funk legends Lee Fields, Charles Bradley, and Naomi Davis. The whole thing's as funky as funky can be – the kind of a record that would be selling for $300 if it came out in the 70s, and which is even nicer to have at a low everyday price! Titles include "Shot Down", "Modern Jive", "Funky So & So", "Take It As It Come", "Pure Cane", "Promised Land", "Country Girl", "La Culebra", "Down To It", "Honey Wagon", and "Bosco's Blues". The midnight sugar here comes from pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto – who's playing with a soulful, bluesy sort of style – one that reminds us a bit of Ray Bryant back in the 60s, but which also comes across here with a fair bit of lighter, lyrical touches as well! As with other Three Blind Mice albums from the time, the tracks here are all longish and open-ended – recorded with a nice sort of brightness that breaks from other jazz traditions, and moving in surprising ways at each new twist and turn. The group also features the great Isao Fukui on bass and Tetsujiro Obara on drums – and titles include "I'm A Fool To Want You", "Midnight Sugar", "The Nearness Of You", and "Sweet Georgia Blues". Sugar/Decca, 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 38.99
A totally wonderful collection of music from the glory days of the Italian soundtrack scene – one that features some classic horror themes from the 70s, and also a fair bit of never-issued material too! The creepy image on the cover will give you a good idea of what you're in for here – music that goes way beyond the ordinary, used to score a host of horror films from a time when Italy was really setting a new standard for all things scary – and using music as a very big part of the overall presentation! As with other Italian work of the time, the scope of sounds is incredible – and production styles and studio techniques do even more to make familiar elements sound even more weird and wonderful. The set features 25 tracks in all – with unreleased titles that include "Minaccia Sulla Citta" by Daniele Patucchi, "Orinoco Prigioniere Del Sesso" by Marcello Giombini, "Bambola Sensuale" by Sante Maria Romitelli, "Giallo In Tensione" by Daniele Patucchi, and "Un Gioco Per Eveline" by Marcello Giombini – plus lots more by Gobin, Stefani Liberati, Franco Micalizzi, Stelvio Cipriani, Manuel De Sica, Bruno Nicolai, and Ennio Morricone. CTI, 1970. Very Good- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A big hit for Stanley Turrentine – and a pretty darn nice record of extended groovers, with a harder sound than you might expect from the tongue-licking cover, and a title of Sugar! The record's only got three cuts – one of them Stanley's famous version of "Sugar", the other two pretty nice ones ("Sunshine Alley" and "Impressions") – all done in a mode that sounds a lot more like harder Prestige sessions from the same time – that great period when the label was stretching out with some electric piano jazz funk. Butch Cornell's on organ, and his work on the album's part of its success, as is the nice hard drumming of Billy Kaye, who actually hits an Idris Muhammad-ish groove at parts! Titles include "Sugar", "Sunshine Alley", and "Impressions". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Billy ButlerSugar Candy Lady ... LP
Curtom, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the few albums ever cut by Billy Butler – the brother of Jerry Butler, and a key force on the Chicago soul scene during the late 60s and early 70s. This one's Billy's sole effort for Curtom, and it's a self-produced, self-arranged album that shows that he was still going strong during the mid 70s. Some of the tracks have a funky soul sound, like the "Sugar Candy Lady" and "Feel The Magic" – but there's also a bunch of nice mellow groovers, in the Chicago 70s soul style that was going down with some of the other Curtom artists at the time. Billy arranged and produced, and this is his last great effort as a soul artist. With the cuts "Alone At Last", "Play My Music", "My Love For You Grows", and "I Know The Feeling Well". A record that was an instant classic from the moment it was first released – and a set that's still pretty darn pleasing all these many years later! At a time when mainstream soul was often too smooth or too poppy, D'Angelo came along and not only found a way to return the music to the years of its power with singers like Al Green or Marvin Gaye – but also managed to bring in some of the best hip hop elements of his generation too, at a level that was far more successful than most other blends that had been tried before! Production is nice and lean, and super-crispy – at a level that so many folks are still copying all these years later – and the set's full of classics that include "Cruisin", "When We Get By", "Smooth", "Me & Those Dreamin Eyes Of Mine", "Brown Sugar", "Alright", and "Jonz In My Bonz". Sugar/Decca, 1980. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A cool change from the usual from Ennio Morricone – a later soundtrack, and one that features some surprisingly jazzy tracks! Part of the set features the more standard Morricone orchestrations you might expect – some really great tracks that have offbeat larger arrangements that are nicely unsettling, but in a completely charming way. But other tracks are even more striking – and feature performances by the trio of pianist Enrico Pierannunzi – working here at his most fluid and vibrant, with a style that's even more evocative than most of his standard albums! A few numbers have a groove we've never heard from Enrico, and some of the orchestral tracks are mighty groovy too – very different than what you might expect from the 1980 date of the film. Titles include "Cinque Quarti", "Double Face", "Citta Viva", "Madre Assente", "Stranamente Un Giorno", and "Per Enrico Riccardo E Roberto". CD

An impeccable collection of work from one of the greatest soundtrack talents ever – a package that brings together a range of rare work from the 70s, including a number of previously-unreleased tracks! The music does have some of the dark tinges promised by the title, but this is less the atonal, avant Morricone than the more sonically mindblowing side of the composer – all sorts of unusual ways to use and record familiar instruments, offbeat combinations of notes and sounds, and an overall ear for the scope of the music that always leaves us breathless when we hear material this strong! The package features 27 tracks in all – 7 of which are unreleased – and the combination of cuts is wonderful. A fantastic funky soundtrack from Riz Ortolani – quite different than some of his bigger hits of the 60s, and full of heavy basslines and lots of great drums! The style here is in the best cop/crime mode of the time – but has even more blacksploitation grit at the bottom than the usual Italian work of the period – with a rawness that really rivals some of the best funky scores by Americans like Johnny Pate or Don Julian – although overall, there's maybe an even higher funk quotient to this record than some of their classics! Take it from us – we're not ones to casually use terms like this – and we really mean it when we say that this rare Italian gem from 1973 might well have you putting aside your copies of Shaft, Superfly, and Black Caesar! A record that's as sunny and slinky as you might guess from the cover – but one that's got a few surprises along the way! Daniele Patucchi can really deliver the goods with a sexy 70s soundtrack – and he's very much in his element here, as he mixes muted horns with warm basslines and light strings, then often peppers the music with these lighter bits of acoustic instrumentation on a guitar or mandolin – a slight Mediterranean vibe to further up the ante of the setting – which is then offset by a few more tense, dramatic moments in the score! The CD features five bonus tracks added to the original soundtrack – and titles include variations on "Il Sorriso Del Ragno" – plus "Verso L'Ignoto", "Tema Di Corinto", and other variations too. CD

Sugar/Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1973. New Copy ... $21.99 29.99
A record with a stark-looking cover, but one that hides a lot of warm within – a set of very well-done 70s tracks from Italian composer Daniele Patucchi, who has a great way of mixing a central theme with some funkier moments that have a nice cop/crime sort of groove! The main theme is great enough alone – a spare piano melody, hung out over some slow-stepping light orchestrations – really beautiful, then balanced with a few upbeat numbers that use funky organ and jazzier instrumentation to change up the mood – all of which makes for a very rich, very lively film score throughout! The CD features three bonus tracks added to the main score – and titles include "Don't Touch Him With Your Smile", "Elikiller", "Rien Va Plus", "La Madre", "Midnight The Stars & You", and "Sans Sommation". CAM/Sugar, 1974. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
A gem of a record from the legendary Nino Rota – one of his best scores for director Federico Fellini – a bit later than some of their 60s classics, but equally great! The music is filled with Rota's trademark interweaving of dominant themes and lighter moments – the kind of tight chamber scoring that makes his compositions work so well – bouncey, but never silly, moody, but never too serious. The narrative takes Rota to more pan-historic territory, but his approach here is similar to Fellini films set in contemporary Rome – and dominant instrumentation includes bits of accordion, piano, horns, and gentle strings. Wonderful stuff all around – with loads of short little tracks that have some nice hooks – titles that include "La Fogaraccia", "La Gradisca E Il Principe", "Gary Cooper", "Lo Struscio", "Amarcord", and "Ti Ricordi Siboney". 2LP set – features 15 tracks never on vinyl! Sugar/Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1973. New Copy ... $21.99 29.99
A soundtrack with a beautiful mix of modes from Carlo Savina – some cuts that have sweet 70s keyboard lines over a laidback groove, others that use strings in ways that are both dark and slinky, and one or two more that throw in some surprising melodies to the mix! This is the first time this obscure Italian score's ever gotten a proper release – and the whole thing's a great testament to the diversity that Savina can bring to some of his best work – a quality that might sometimes have his music a bit more obscured in legacies next to Italian composers with more of a trademark style – but one that's ripe for rediscovery in this well-done package! The set includes 15 tracks from the film score, plus 2 more from the rare 45 release. CD

Townes revisiting his own time-honored tunes from the late 60s onward, often backed by just a second guitar or fiddle, spare settings that maximize the stark power of his songwriting and voice! The voice is really the key here, distinctive in both the songwriting – with some of the most effective story songs about lost souls and wayward love in the modern folk or country canon – and in performance, here sounding as clear and soulful as ever, and in much stronger form than we remembered! Beautiful stuff. Sugar/Decca, Late 50s/1960s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A really fantastic collection – one that gets at the full range of jazz-based sounds in Italian soundtracks during the 60s – served up here on a set of tracks that go way past the obvious! This isn't a "best of" set – and instead, it digs very deeply, and even features some unissued material – brought together in an array of tracks that are a complete delight, even to our ears – which have been trained on Italian soundtrack reissues for decades! Most of the music here is from that key point when Italian scoring was moving from larger orchestras to smaller combos – most right before the groovy/mod years, and taking advantage of the very strong rising tide of top-shelf jazz soloists on the Italian scene – players who are far too many to mention here, but who really help ensure that the work is fantastic! Imagine the best jazz-based soundtracks from Hollywood and France in the late 50s – then imagine work better than that, and that's what you'll get here – on a huge selection of 33 tracks by artists who include Francesco De Masi, Piero Umiliani, Luis Bacalov, Marcelli Gigante, Luiz Bonfa, Piero Piccioni, Ivan Vandor, Aldo Piga, Carlo Savina, Carlo Rustichelli, and others. CAM/Sugar (Italy), 1966. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful early soundtrack from Luis Bacalov – much jazzier than some of his later work, with a vibe that's right up there with some of the more jazz-based work of the Italian scene in the earlier part of the 60s! There's a cool wordless vocal from Nora Orlandi on a few tracks, and nice use of flute, piano, and percussion throughout – varied nicely, but with a really strong song-based sort of approach – so that the album's not entirely jazz in structure, but not far off either! Bacalov's always been great at more dramatic moments, but it's great to hear him working in a style like this – and there's a nice sense of variety on the record, which really keeps things interesting – especially as a few more guitar-based numbers move in to the mix. The sound gets a bit more tense at the end, but is still nice and spare – and titles include "La Strega In Amore", "Aura", "Due Donna Un Enigma", "Seduzione Diabolica", "Danza Greca", "Bruciata Viva", and "Consuleo". A career-spanning collection of work from one of our favorite Italian soundtrack composers of all time – the fantastic Piero Piccioni, presented here in a wealth of material pulled from the vaults of Cam! Piccioni was one of the most important Italian film music talents of the 60s – right there behind Ennio Morricone – and during the decade, he started in jazz, then quickly moved through a range of really wonderful styles – going for mod elements, funkier bits, bossa nova, and other inflections that kept his work interesting well through the 70s! This set features a number of tracks that aren't easily available on other reissues, mixed with some we'd never seen before – a massive collection of 26 titles, with work from films that include Lucky Luciano, Citta E Campagna, Addio Alexandra, Per Questa Notte, In Viaggio Con Pappa, Io So Che Tu Sai Che Io So, L'Assassino, Una Vita Violenta, Tre Per Una Rapina, I Dolci Inganni, Il Figlio Di Spartacus, Niente Rose Per OSS 177, Toh E Morta La Nonna, and many others. A beautiful 70s soundtrack from Armando Trovajoli – the Italian composer who's maybe best known for a few key scores in the 60s, but who continued to do really wonderful work as the years went on! The set's overflowing with the kind of well-spaced moments that makes some of Trovajoli's best work so wonderful – a mode that was clearly learned from bossa and jazz, but taken to different Italian cinematic territory with the instrumentation – which here includes great use of piano and keyboards, at times almost echoing the style of his contemporary, Stelvio Cipriani! Yet there's also some other instrumentation and elements that change things up nicely too, which makes for a really great sense of variety throughout. Titles include the vocal track "Che Vuole Questa Musica Stasera", sung by Peppino Gagliardi – plus "Woman's Perfume",K "Benedicte", "In The Dark", "Passeggiando Per Genova", "Per La Strada", "Tuo Amore Mio", "Those Lazy Days", and "Lungo Il Marciapiede". An impeccable collection of work from one of the greatest soundtrack talents ever – a package that brings together a range of rare work from the 70s, including a number of previously-unreleased tracks! Sugar/Decca (Italy), Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the first big international soundtracks to come from the Italian scene in the 60s – the start of a great run that would continue through the decade, although maybe not with results as strongly as this! The score is for a strange documentary-like film (the title means "World Gone To The Dogs"), and most of the tunes are dramatic – with a sweeping orchestral feel that has a few light instrumental moments. The big fame of this one is that it contains the theme that went onto become the 60s vocal standard "More" – but in this version, it's kind of submerged, and taken at a much slower pace – a theme that appears here and there, but also mixed with other really lively numbers too – always shifting the mood, to match the different settings in the film. Titles include "Free Way", "Models In Blue", "Life Savers Girls", "The Last Flight", "Dog Heat", "Cargo Cult", and "Purgatory". New expanded version – features a whopping 36 tracks in all – way more than the original album! CD

Eric AlexanderMy Favorite Things (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 2007. New Copy (reissue)... $54.99 59.99
A fitting title for this one – because Eric Alexander is one of our favorite things in jazz – and albums like this are the reason why! Alexander's tenor is in very sharp-edged formation here – working with a familiar quartet of David Hazeltine on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and hitting an open, expressive solo mode on every number! The more upbeat tunes are filled with the quick-thinking, freely-creative work that links Eric's tenor to that of Sonny Rollins in his best years – and the mellower tracks almost show some of the soulfulness of Stanley Turrentine or Hank Mobley. But after dozens of recordings, Alexander hardly needs to be compared to anyone else – as he clearly stands on his own as one of the few living giants in jazz. Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 3CD ... $21.99 38.99
Three full albums from Atlantic Starr – with lots of bonus tracks too! All In The Name Of Love has Atlantic Star at the height of their catchy commercial fame – bouncing along with rhythms that crossover nicely to the mainstream, yet still keep a bit of their previous funky edge intact! The groove here is almost in the style that Atlantic Starr inspired in so many other younger groups in the earlier part of the 80s – although it's also a bit more polished too. Most instrumentation is electric, and tunes are mostly written by the team of David and Wayne Lewis – both of whom sing on the record. Barbara Weathers also handles female vocals, and titles include "Once Lover At A Time", "Let The Sun In", "My Mistake", "I'm In Love", "Always", "Don't Take Me For Granted", and a version of Sam Dees' "All In The Name Of Love". We're Moving Up is one of the last in a long run of 80s hits from Atlantic Starr – a group who were already moving up the soul charts before the release of the album! The set continues their move into commercial territory started a few records before, but it also shakes loose of some of the colder sounds of 80s soul – and picks up a somewhat warmer vibe on the keyboards and rhythms. Porscha Martin sings female vocals with the group, and titles include "Under Your Spell", "Love Ain't Fair", "Woman's Touch", "We're Movin Up", "My Sugar", "You Deserve The Best", and "Don't Start The Fire". Love Crazy is a set that's got a nice change in groove from Atlantic Starr – a sound that's still got a lot of their best elements intact, but which also seems to bring on some of the best elements that were being introduced by the British scene too! Rhythms at points are maybe more in the Soul II Soul or Lisa Stansfield modes – which makes for some great tunes that really reinvigorate the group and update them for a new jack generation, while still holding onto the charms of the past. A few moments get more in a mellow quiet storm sound – all with the balance that made earlier Atlantic Starr albums classics – on titles that include "Love Crazy", "Hold On", "Masterpiece", "Girl Your Love's So Fine", "I Can't Wait", "If You Knew What's Good For You", and "Come Lover". 3CD package features all albums in tiny LP-styled jackets – with bonus tracks that include "One Lover At A Time (ext)", "Always (edit)", "Let The Sun Shine IN (ext rmx)", "All In The Name Of Love (single)", "My First Love (ext)", "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth ext mix)", "My First Love (7" edit)", and "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth underground mix)". Roy AyersVirgin Ubiquity – Unreleased Recordings 1976 to 1981 ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
It's like a dream come true – 13 previously unissued recordings by Roy Ayers, all from the height of his glory years on Polydor! Roy's work from this time is some of our favorite ever – a burning blend of jazz, soul, and funk – handled with impeccable charm, and a level of soul that few other artists of the time ever matched. Roy's genius was strongly documented at the time by a series of excellent Polydor albums – but there was also a heck of a lot of great material that never saw the light of day, and which is every bit as great as the classics that we've come to know and love over the years. Hearing this set is incredible – like upping our already-massive appreciation of Roy's talents, and like finding a lost corner of soul music history that nobody's ever heard before. The tunes are all amazing – a great blend of jazzy soul, mellow soul, and dancefloor groovers – and the package is only the tip of the iceberg, from what we've been told! The full album does a great job to not cross over too much with the 12" singles previously issued in this "Virgin" series – and titles include "What's The T", "I Really Love You", "Sugar", "Mystery Of Love", "Green & Gold", "Brand New Feeling", "I Did It In Seattle", "I Just Wanna Give It Up", "Together Forever", "Boogie Down", "I Am Your Mind", and a great alternate version of "Mystic Voyage"! We're not sure why he never made it bigger – but possibly he was so eclipsed by the talents of Van it was hard to get out on his own! Includes the hit title cut – "Sweetest Thing This Side Of Heaven" – plus "Gotta Tell Somebody", "For You", "Sittin Pretty", "Hooked On You", "I'll Be Loving You", and "Sugar Baby". CD

Big BlackLion Walk (deep pruple vinyl 180 gram pressing) ... LP
Uni/Future Shock (Italy), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $15.99
One of the weirdest, wildest albums from percussionist Big Black – a set that stretches out with a vibe that's a lot trippier and jazzier at times than some of his other work! Part of the album's strength comes from the arrangements – which are partly handled by Phil Moore, an artist who created all these other great album projects in the late 60s – often, like this one, a cool mix of exotic currents with new trends in funk and jazz – served up here by a lineup that features Moore on piano, Herman Riley and Chester Washington on tenors, Bruce Langhorn and the mysterious Brother Soul on guitars, and Thurman Green on trombone. Curtis Peagler adds in some alto and flute, and Owen Marshall plays the wild hose-a-phone, plus a host of percussion instruments too – while Big Black himself handles congas and a bit of vocals. Side one features the long jamming "Lion Walk" – and side two features "Tell Me, Do Your Conscience Bother You", "Love Sweet Like Sugar Cane", and "Come On Down To The Beach". LP, Vinyl record album

Rupa BiswasDisco Jazz (orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Numero, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A record that's got to be one of the coolest recorded in Calgary during the early 80s – as it offers up a really unusual blend of modes that definitely lives up to its title, and which also borrows a bit from Indian music as well! Singer Rupa Biswas fronts a group that's equally strong on the instrumental tip, and which allow for plenty of room in the tracks to let the players stretch out and solo – in a blend of keyboards and guitar with more traditional sarod and tablas! Rhythms are mostly upbeat, but in ways that are more interesting than the "disco" title implies – especially in 1982 – and the whole thing's maybe first a funky fusion record, which then borrows a bit from Indian percussion, then adds in Rupa's vocals in the lead. Titles include "Aaj Shanibar", "Moja Bhari Moja", "East West Shuffle", and the side-long jam "Ayee Morshume/Be Reham Duniya". LP, Vinyl record album

A rare later soundtrack from Dutch composer Ruud Bos – best known for some very funky work at the start of the 70s, and still going strong here a decade later! The score's got a much more mid 70s vibe than you'd expect – like some of the best American cop show work of the early 70s, with jazzy instrumentation intertwined with larger orchestrations – handled by Nat Peck, who had a fair bit of jazz experience himself – which means that he really lets the best elements of the music come forth and blossom! A number of tracks are upbeat and quickly-grooving – and those are mixed with some shorter scene-setting moments that balance the whole thing out strongly – and make the whole package feel like a long suite of sounds, dedicated to this lost film. There's a whopping 30 tracks in all – and titles include "Longing", "Secret Affair", "At Labour", "Sugar", "Happy House", "In Love", "Romance", "Start", "Casino", "Jack's Death", and the well-titled "Sexy Music". One of the youngest groups of the zydeco wave of the 70s – and one of the grooviest too! The group's got a solid swing and sense of soul that goes beyond most of their contemporaries – almost a deeper current of blues at most points, especially in the guitar – and even in some of the accordion, which can come across like a harmonica at points! Verve (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99
A stunner from Kenny Burrell – one of his most sophisticated and soulful sessions of the 60s! Kenny's working here with the ultra-cool arranger Johnny Pate – best known for his work with Curtis Mayfield, and his 70s soundtrack fame – but a heck of a creative talent when it comes to a jazz session like this! For the record, Pate's created these spare little backdrops – not nearly as full as those penned by Don Sebesky or Claus Ogerman – and with a gentle sort of grooving quality that really pushes Kenny along nicely. Burrell's guitar is very strongly upfront in the mix – working chromatic magic at a level hardly ever matched again on record! Side one features the extended "Asphalt Canyon Suite" – a magnificent tune that's simply sublime – and side two features 5 shorter tracks, "Things Ain't What They Used To Be", "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", "Please Send Me Someone To Love", "Going To Jim & Andy's", and "Sugar Hill". ✨✧ Captain SkyPop Goes The Captain ... LP
AVI, 1979. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
The second smoking album from Captain Sky – a Windy City funk legend, and one who's cut from some of the same cloth as Bootsy Collins or Rick James! Like both of those artists, the Captain's a pretty imposing figure, with a bit of future flash to his looks – and while he uses lots of the basslines that might tie him to Bootsy and the P-Funk universe, he's also got a groove that mixes in some of the more sophisticated modes you'd know from the Chicago scene at the time! There's almost a late Curtom feel to the record – tight funk, a bit faster than early in the decade, but still not really disco – and with some mellow midtempo tracks that balance things out beautifully – and really show Sky evolving past the style of his first record. Tracks include "Moonchild", "Fearless", "Cream & Sugar", "Rebirth", "Hero", "Double You SKY", and "Ker-Runch". LP, Vinyl record album

17 North Parade/VP, 1976. New Copy 3 CDs ... $23.99 24.98
A classic slice of Jamaican roots – and an essential record from the godlike hands of Lee Perry! The set was produced by Perry at Black Ark – and instantly became the stuff of legend, even though the initial version of the album got very limited exposure – which has led to years of differing reissues and versions of the record! Yet the core sound is always very much in place, no matter what the setting – very spiritual lyrics from the group themselves, set to nicely stripped-down rhythms and instrumentation that are a great contrast to the wave of more polished international reggae releases that were garnering mainstream attention at the time. The lasting power of the set is proof that maybe when it comes to roots, you've got to really go to the roots to get it right – as you'll hear on classic tracks that include "La La Bam Bam", "Fisherman", "Congoman", "Children Crying", "Open Up The Gate", and "The Wrong Thing". This amazing 3CD package features the full album, the rare Lee Perry original mix of the album, and 10 more bonus tracks that include "Congoman (12" mix)", "Congoman Chant", "Solid Foundation (Disco Cork mix)", "Foundation Dub", "At The Feast", "Don't Blame It On I", "Neckodeemus", "Fisherman Dub", "Noah Sugar Pan", and "Bring The Mackaback". ✨✧ Hank CrawfordI Hear A Symphony ... LP
Kudu, 1975. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Not really a symphony, but a great album that features the soulful alto sax of Hank Crawford blowing over some rich larger backings from David Matthews – all with a sweetly funky Kudu sound! The style's a bit more polished than some of the other Kudu sessions of the time – almost a bit disco or clubby at times – as Matthews brings in a fair bit of strings and horns to the backings, and also has some female backing singers sweetening up the sound. But as usual with Kudu, the record's no cheap cash-in sort of set – and Matthews ensures that it's got a tightly-crafted groove that's almost like mainstream 70s soundtrack funk at its best moments. Keyboards are by Richard Tee and Leon Pendarvis – and titles include "Sugar Free", "I Hear A Symphony", "The Stripper", "Hang It On The Ceiling", and "Love Won't Let Me Wait". LP, Vinyl record album

Darkly beautiful sounds from the duo of Don & Stevie Gere – a husband and wife who work here with a style that's folksy, but a bit spooky too – possibly due to the fact that the music within was recorded in their California home, and never issued for years! There's a deeply personal feel to the songs here – almost like we're peeking in on the intimacy of the couple, but as they try to put together a message to reach outside of their home too – themes of their own love mixed with greater societal issues – later taken up as some of the songs were reworked by other artists like David Gates, Curt Boettcher, and Waddy Wachtel. Yet there's an innocence to these original recordings that's really mindblowing – rescued from oblivion on aging acetates, and represented here on cuts that include "Sweet Sugar", "Keep An Eye On You", "Another Blue Day", "What Do You Think Of Me", "Kindly", and "Tell Me Now". A killer rare gem from the 70s – served up in this warm mellow take on funky soul, with plenty of jazzy licks in the mix too! The production is great – cool and compressed, so that the vocals are folded nicely onto the grooves – which are mostly in this midtempo mode that chugs along in a really unified pace throughout the record – almost making the whole thing feel like some funky suite of tracks that work together as a unit! The vibe is almost a bit in the Sugar Billy mode – indie funk that's nicely away from the mainstream, and with a groove that's more pre-disco overall – on a great set of tracks that include "You Must Be From Heaven", "Rainbow Men", "Freeway", "Love Rope", "Super Love", and "Save The Young Ones". Bill Evans at the end of the 60s – sounding really wonderful here in a set of unreleased live recordings from London! Bill's got the fantastic Eddie Gomez here on bass – who really gets plenty of space to stretch out on the long tracks that make up most of the set – and Evans himself is very well-recorded, with a strong ear for that sense of tonal color that makes just about every pianistic choice from this period feel so completely unique! Marty Morell is on drums – as ever, a master of understatement, which really lets us fall in love all over again with Gomez and Evans – and the set features 18 tracks all recorded at Ronnie Scott's club in Soho, in December of 1969 – titles that include "So What", "Very Early", "Sugar Plum", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "Waltz For Debby", "Round Midnight", "Elsa", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Turn Out The Stars", "Goodbye", "Re Person I Knew", and "Two Lonely People". Ultra Vybe (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $18.99
Sublime live work from the great Bill Evans – two different radio performances from the 70s, both of them great! The first half might be the most notable – as the set just features the bass of Eddie Gomez alongside Bill's piano – a pairing we love so much, and which sounds so incredible, we don't even miss the drums at all – because Eddie's got such an inherent sense of rhythm that he fits perfectly with Evans' stunning approach to the piano – on titles that include "Two Lonely People", "Some Other Time", "Up With The Lark", and "TTT". Drummer Elliot Zigmund joins the duo on the second half of the set – but as with his other great work with the trio during the decade, he's a master of understatement – and still really lets Gomez and Evans control the flow – especially Bill, who often begins tunes in a way that feels as if he's not even going to wait for the others to join in! Titles include "Sareen Jurer", "Blue Serge", "Sugar Plum", and "Morning Glory". CD
