✨✧ Black SugarBlack Sugar (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sono Radio/Discos Monterey (Spain), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $33.99 36.99
An incredible album of Latin Funk – recorded in Peru during the early 70s, but right up there with the best from New York and LA at the time! The record has a fantastic style that blends together electric instrumentation, acoustic percussion, and some sweetly soulful lyrics – in English on all the tracks, and nice and funky throughout! Despite its obscure initial origin, the record's gone onto become a seminal Latin groove favorite over the years – thanks to keen global interest in the group, and a solid sound on the record that keeps this one at the top of our play pile over the years. The whole album's a gem – and killer cuts include "Funky Man", "Too Late", and a beautiful version of "Pussy Cat" – a super track from the soundtrack to the film The Owl & The Pussycat, with totally tasty Fender Rhodes grooves! LP, Vinyl record album
(Please Note – these copies have a small split along the top seam from shipping, otherwise these are in great shape!)

Black SugarBlack Sugar II ... LP
Sono Radio/Discos Monterey (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $33.99 36.99 About May 12, 2023
The second great album from Black Sugar, and every bit as great as the first – perhaps even more so from a keyboard perspective, given the sweet organ and moog that filter through the set! The record's got the group sounding even tighter than before – mixing Latin rhythms with some great elements from American soul and funky fusion – all wrapped up nicely with a personal, heartfelt sort of approach that's really great. Victor Coco Salazar handles arrangements, guitars, and vocals – and the album features killer covers of "Valdez In The Country" and "Don't You Worry About A Thing" – plus the originals "Fuego", "Checan", "All Your Love", "Wake Up", and "I Want To Believe". Brown SugarBrown Sugar Featuring Clydie King (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Chelsea/Big Pink (Korea), 1973. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A great little record from Brown Sugar – a group who really soar here, thanks to the presence of Clydie King on lead vocals! King sung famously on many rock and soul sessions during the 60s and 70s – but she's a great talent in the spotlight, and really helps to give the record a lot of focus – uniting the group's mix of deep soul and southern elements – lots of burning underneath the rhythms, and horns compressed over the top – in a style that's a bit Muscle Shoals, but more restrained overall, and with a few moments that go for more of an east coast feel. Titles include "Soul Asylum", "Love Can Bring You Down", "Weep For Me", "Don't Hold Back", "Real Love", and "Moonlight & Taming You". CD

Burnt Sugar ArkestraAngels Over Oakanda ... CD
Avantgroidd, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99
Wonderfully righteous work from Burnt Sugar Arkestra – a group who've been giving us great records for years, but who are maybe even more important to the scene than ever before! The core of the record is the long title track – a very jazzy tune that builds up over loops set down by composer Greg Tate, with a flowing, snakey vibe that allows for plenty of long trumpet, tenor, flute, and alto solos over the guitars and Fender Rhodes that work the rhythms – maybe almost in electric Miles territory, but more laidback. That tune is then reworked on a number of variations that are very different – mostly instrumental, as the main track – but finishing up with a bit of vocals near the end of the record – a great contribution from singer Lisala Beatty! Titles include "Angels Over Oakanda", "Repatriation Of The Midnight Moores", "Oakanda Overdrive", and "Lisala Oer Inna Oakanda". CD

Sugar Minott was at the top of his game, and at the top of the reggae charts when he made this recording for Bullwackie Barnes. His huge chart hit, a reworking of Michael Jackson's "Good Thing Going" is reworked again here in a different version, with the signature Wackie's sound, rumbling bass, crisp drums and light echoey dub effects dancing in the background. Also includes "So Much Trouble", "Wicked Ago Feel It", "She Stays On My Mind", "Freedom Train" and "Going Back To Motherland". CD

Capitol, 1967. Very Good+ ... $14.99 23.99
A cool Capitol quartet from the end of the 60s – every bit as Sunshine Pop sounding as you'd guess from their name and image on the cover! There's a style here that's a bit different than some of the sweeter pop of the time – a slight undercurrent of darkness that's hard to peg easily, but which comes a bit from the way the male and female voices interact – and from the slightly unusual arrangements, which seem to rely heavily on some of the bluer notes in the spectrum. Vocals are arranged by Peter Mann, the leader of the group – and the instrumentation is by Mort Garson, whose presence is always appreciated. Titles include "Take Me Away", "Privilege", "Hanging Together", "The Candy Children Song", "Papa Won't You Let Me Go To Town With You", "Baby Baby", "Let The Truth Come Out", and "The Attitude". You may recognize one of the faces from the movie "Titanic", or the "Alias" television series. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sugar MinottBlack Roots (limited numbered edition) ... CD
Mango/Hip-O Select, 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
A classic set from one of the original kings of the dancehall, nicknamed for his sweet vocal style! While "River Jordan" and "Hard Time Pressure" were big singles in a singles-driven genre, this set's solid all the way through, with great backing harmonies from Don Carlos & Lacksley Castell among others, supporting Minott's groovy lead, that wouldn't be out of place on a Windy city soul side from the 70s. The rhythms are laid out by a crack young band including Gladdy, Bingy Bunny, Steelie & Horsemouth Wallace at Channel One, under Minott's crisp production, with half of the finishing touches laid on by Barnabas at Channel One and the other half by Jammy at Tubby's. 10 tracks of prime early 80s reggae representing the best of a key transitional period fro Jamaican music, including "Mankind", "Jail House", "I'm Gonna Hold On", "Opressors Oppression", "Two Time Loser", "Black Roots", "Clean Runnings" and "Mr Babylon Man". Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Seminal sounds from the mighty Sugar Minott – a singer who's sweet-voiced style was perfect for the changes going on at Studio One in the late 70s! Sugar grew up on the soulful styles of the rocksteady years – and here, as Studio One begins to step into some dancehall modes, his vocals provide a perfect link with the past – which sometimes comes from the way the label was reworking older rhythms and melodies in a subtle way – often with new lyrics from Minott that really transform the tunes! Currents of early dancehall and versioning flow through the mix of work here – and the set is a great illustration of this key moment in the evolution of reggae. Titles include "Vanity", "Please Be True", "Hang On Natty", "Jahovia", "Try Love", "Give A Hand", "Is It True", "Love Gonna Pack Up", "Give Me Jah Jah", "Party Time", "Jah Almighty", "Jah Jah Children", and "Change Your Ways". ✨✧ Sugar BillySuper Duper Love ... LP
Fast Track, 1975. Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A classic indie cooker from Sugar Billy – a bit funky, a bit clubby – and a really great batch of grooves done in a pre-disco mode! The tracks are all pretty darn upbeat – somewhat warmer than the funk of Fatback or Kool & The Gang, but still with a nicely rough-edged feel overall – one that mixes snapping rhythms with Billy's slightly raspy vocals – all in a groove that's somewhat unique, and which is almost a hybrid of southern soul modes and some of the indie styles bubbling out of the New York scene in the early 70s. Arrangements are by Jimmy Roach, who definitely helps the group groove – and a young Marcus Belgrave is actually in the group on Trumpet! Titles include the classic "Super Duper Love (parts 1 & 2)", plus "Treat Me Like You Don't Know Me", "Love Bug", "Sugar Pie", "Too Much Too Soon", and "Believe In Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Brown SugarI'm In Love With A Dreadlocks – Brown Sugar & The Birth Of Lovers Rock 1977 to 1980 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first collection we've ever seen to do justice to the Brown Sugar trio from the UK reggae scene of the late 70s – a group who do a fantastic job of merging older sweet soul styles with a new lovers' vibe, all in a mode that's completely sublime! The group's noteworthy as the starting place of Caron Wheeler, who'd later rise to great fame in Soul II Soul – and Carol Simms, who'd later rise on her own as Kofi – but even without that later legacy, the music here is completely wonderful – and is presented with detailed notes, in a set that collects all the singles the trio recorded at the time with Dennis Bovell and John "Brownie T" Kpiaye. Brown Sugar are clearly influenced by the sweeter side of American group soul style in the late 60s – and even cover a few cuts from that era – yet they also have this bad-stepping style that really offers up the strongest current of the London style of the period – the crisper crackle and rootsier production approach that was really showing a scene coming into its own. Titles include "Black Pride", "Our Reggae Music", "Hello Stranger", "You & Your Smiling Face", "Loving Dreadlocks Dub", "Confession Hurts", "Proud", "Do You Really Love Me", "Hurtin", "Run Away Love",a nd "Dreaming Of Zion". ✨✧ Sugar Pie De SantoGo Go Power – The Complete Chess Singles 1961 to 1966 ... CD
Chess/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the mighty Sugar Pie DeSanto – a singer who really rocked Chess Records back in the 60s! DeSanto came to the label already boasting one hell of a groove – a rock-solid sense of rhythm that made all of her tunes groovers right from the get-go – and a raw vocal power that easily rivaled, if not beat, that of Etta James – her labelmate at Chess, and partner on a few duet tracks here! The collection's a non-stop soul party throughout – as upbeat as Northern Soul, but with plenty of deep soul elements as well – and it's the first time many of these cuts have been brought together on CD, and certainly never before as wonderful as this. Kent serves up some great notes and vintage photos with the package – the latter of which show Sugar Pie in action on stage, clearly one of the sexiest singers to work the circuit back in the 60s! Titles include "In The Basement (parts 1 & 2)", "Soulful Dress", "Witch For A Night", "Ask Me", "Good Timin", "Mr & Mrs", "Mama Didn't Raise No Fools", "Crazy Lovin", "There's Gonna Be Trouble", "Jump In My Chest", "Somewhere Down The Line", "Use What You Got", "Never Love A Stranger", "I Love You So Much", "Go Go Power", and "I Don't Wanna Fuss". The breakout album for The Cryan Shames – a wonderfully groovy harmony pop combo from the 60s – one with a sound that's very much the best Sunshine Pop of LA, even though these guys hail from our hometown of Chicago! The vocals come together with a really magical feel – sometimes mellow and drifty, ala The Association – sometimes vibrant and soaring, in a really catchy way! The whole album's great – with just a touch of Brit invasion guitar jangle behind the vocals at times – and titles include "Heat Wave", "We'll Meet Again", "If I Needed Someone", "Hey Joe", "Sugar & Spice", "July", "I Wanna Meet You", and "Ben Franklin's Almanac". A wonderful set by Carmen McRae – captured at San Francisco's Sugar Hill in 1962 – backed by a tight trio! Carmen is in sweet form here, very loose and and wise, and the group knows just how to fill out the sound. A surprisingly groovy musical based on the film Some Like It Hot – one of the better of a slew of 20s-set musicals that played big on Broadway in the 60s! The music and lyrics are by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, respectively – but the thing that really makes the soundtrack itself work is the lead performances by Robert Morse and Tony Roberts – the former always a charming presence on the stage, the latter a surprisingly good straight man. Elaine Joyce handles the Marilyn Monroe character – and the music sports some nicely jazzy arrangements by Elliott Lawrence. Titles include "It's Always Love", "Hey Why Not", "Sugar", "November Song", and "Sun On My Face". 2CD version features a full bonus mix of the score – remixed just for this release, with better sound than the original album! Butch Cornell's on organ, and his work on the album's part of its success, as is the nice hard drumming of Billy Kaye, who actually hits an Idris Muhammad-ish groove at parts! Soul Sugar is a fantastic album, and one of Jimmy's hardest to find on either LP or CD! The set is quite different than most of Jimmy's other work – and it features short, hard, funky tracks that feel more like obscure 7" singles than any of Jimmy's straighter soul jazz work. It almost sounds like The JBs are backing him – as the drums are tight, bass is great, and the overall groove is fantastic! The record's a little like Jimmy's Electric Funk album, but harder, with more breaks and basslines – and a non-stop groove that's a pure delight for any fan of deep funk! Great stuff, with "Ain't It Funky Now", "The Now Thing", "Fat Cakes", "New Volume", and "Bug Out". Groove Grease is a funky organ workout from Jimmy McGriff – a set that's got his famous talents on the Hammond out front of a larger ensemble – but in a way that's very different than some of his albums of that type from the 70s! There's lots of electricity in the mix – electric piano from Horace Ott, bass from Richard Evans, and guitar from Wayne Bennett – mixed with sharp work on horns from Cliff Davis on tenor and flute, Murray Watson on trumpet, and Johnny Beard on baritone – three players who really flesh out the sound! The album's got some excellent stone funky classics – like "The Bird", "Groove Grease", and "Plain Brown Bag" – plus some surprisingly funky readings of standards like "Canadian Sunset" and "Mr Lucky", both made to sound super-nice, thanks to excellent work on bass and drums! A fantastic anthology of Flint, MI soul great Regional Garland – 70s soul empires were built on lesser talent than you'll find on this set put together by Egon & Now Again! Garland is a performer, producer, songwriter and arranger of whom we were most familiar with for his work with the group Hunt's Determination – a taste of which is included here, along with Regional's recordings with The Perfections, 21st Generations, Mixed Sugar, Brilliance and others. Even the few Hunts Determination records we were familiar with show a fairly staggering stylistic range, while holding together as a tight whole – and that's all the more impressive with a broader collection of work with varying personnel here. The heart of the collection is early-to-late 70s recordings, from dancefloor soul, funk and strains of disco later in the decade – revelatory stuff for us. We knew the man was good, but, damn! The set also features several mid 80s recordings with that era's synth textured sound with the 70s soul vocals surprisingly well. Includes "I Need Love" & "Hey James" with 21st Generations, "Get On Down" & "Girl You Better Hurry" with The Perfections, "I Need Love" and "Are We Through" with Hunts Determination, "15 Ain't Young No More", "It's A Bad Feeling" and "Disco Jam Bam Bam" with Mixed Sugar, the previously unreleased "Gangster Girl" and "I'm Sad We've Broke Up", "I'm Falling In Love" with Vann & Reggie, "Hit Girl" with Brilliance and more. The midnight sugar here comes from pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto – who's playing with a soulful, bluesy sort of style – one that reminds us a bit of Ray Bryant back in the 60s, but which also comes across here with a fair bit of lighter, lyrical touches as well! As with other Three Blind Mice albums from the time, the tracks here are all longish and open-ended – recorded with a nice sort of brightness that breaks from other jazz traditions, and moving in surprising ways at each new twist and turn. The group also features the great Isao Fukui on bass and Tetsujiro Obara on drums – and titles include "I'm A Fool To Want You", "Midnight Sugar", "The Nearness Of You", and "Sweet Georgia Blues". CD

That's the classy Chi-Lites on the cover, but the set features music from a nice array of deep soul talents of the 70s – pulled together from a mix of tracks from labels that include Hi Records, Brunswick, TK, and Invictus! As you'd guess from the title, the set focuses on male singers only – both groups and individuals – and the package has a good mix of southern styles and a few bits from up north – mostly from the earlier part of the 70s. Tracks include "Under My Wings" by Smith Connection, "Sweet Surrender" by Ollie Nightingale, "Star Bright Star Lite" by Syl Johnson, "Let Me Back In" by Tyrone Davis, "Don't Leave Me Starvin For Your Love (part 1)" by Lamont Dozier, "I Can't Do Enough For You Baby" by Tommy Tate, "I Don't Do Windows" by OV Wright, "Higher & Higher" by Jackie Wilson, "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" by Gil Scott Heron, "Take Me To The River" by Al Green, and "Living In The Footsteps Of Another Man" by The Chi-Lites. A record that was an instant classic from the moment it was first released – and a set that's still pretty darn pleasing all these many years later! At a time when mainstream soul was often too smooth or too poppy, D'Angelo came along and not only found a way to return the music to the years of its power with singers like Al Green or Marvin Gaye – but also managed to bring in some of the best hip hop elements of his generation too, at a level that was far more successful than most other blends that had been tried before! Production is nice and lean, and super-crispy – at a level that so many folks are still copying all these years later – and the set's full of classics that include "Cruisin", "When We Get By", "Smooth", "Me & Those Dreamin Eyes Of Mine", "Brown Sugar", "Alright", and "Jonz In My Bonz". Now Again, 1970s/1980s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The tunes are all originals – mostly collaborations between Mizell and Clarke – and the album's got a great way of sounding smooth while still keeping things funky – that perfect Miami balance that would soon disappear when things got a bit more commercial. Two albums from Peggy Lee on one CD. First up is I Like Men! – an obscure album of "guy" songs from the end of the 50s! There's a playful feel to the music that fits Lee's vocals very well – as do the bouncy arrangements from Jack Marshall, who turns out to be one of the best musical partners that Peggy could ever hope for! The set's got that nice jazzy groove that really makes Lee's return to Capitol Records so great – and titles include "Good For Nothing Joe", "Charley My Boy", "Jim", "Bill", and "It's So Nice To Have A Man Around the House". On Sugar 'N' Spice Peggy's sweet as sugar, but working here with a heck of a lot of spice – thanks to arranger Benny Carter, who brings in a wonderfully jazzy feel to the set! The album's one of Peggy's best from her comeback years at Capitol – and a prime example of the syncopated, slinking mode of arrangement that was the best 60s discovery for the Peggy Lee voice – and which allowed her to create a unique space for her own maturing sexuality in pop music. The whole thing's great, and avoids the cliches of some of the other Peggy Lee albums from the time. Titles include "I Believe In You", "Ain't That Love", "The Best Is Yet To Come", "The Sweetest Sounds", "Teach Me Tonight", "Tell All The World About You", and "Big Bad Bill". CD

There's a great glow to the whole record – an excellent easygoing sense of soul – and titles include an incredible reading of "Vera Cruz", done with Deodato on piano, and at a breakaway speed that's just great, and worth the price of the record alone! A very groovy score for this mid 70s Italian comedy – one that stars the great Bud Spencer as "flatfoot" detective Piedone – making his way to Hong Kong to solve a crime! Yet despite the style of the film, the soundtrack is nicely different than other Italian comedic work – and features some great crime scoring from the team of Guido and Maurizio DeAngelis – served up here with some of the best electric touches of the Italian cop show genre, including some heavy guitars, keyboards, and nice funky bottoms! These tunes are offset by others that are a bit lighter – underscoring the comedy in the film with some more traditionally Italian or "Chinese" styled themes – but there's plenty of great cop/crime work here to make the soundtrack one of the best Piedone soundtracks. 2CD edition features a huge amount of material – 55 tracks in all, including rare variations on the theme, unused tracks, and a lot of other film material too! A fantastic funky soundtrack from Riz Ortolani – quite different than some of his bigger hits of the 60s, and full of heavy basslines and lots of great drums! The style here is in the best cop/crime mode of the time – but has even more blacksploitation grit at the bottom than the usual Italian work of the period – with a rawness that really rivals some of the best funky scores by Americans like Johnny Pate or Don Julian – although overall, there's maybe an even higher funk quotient to this record than some of their classics! A soundtrack with a beautiful mix of modes from Carlo Savina – some cuts that have sweet 70s keyboard lines over a laidback groove, others that use strings in ways that are both dark and slinky, and one or two more that throw in some surprising melodies to the mix! This is the first time this obscure Italian score's ever gotten a proper release – and the whole thing's a great testament to the diversity that Savina can bring to some of his best work – a quality that might sometimes have his music a bit more obscured in legacies next to Italian composers with more of a trademark style – but one that's ripe for rediscovery in this well-done package! The set includes 15 tracks from the film score, plus 2 more from the rare 45 release. CD

Armando TrovajoliProfumo Di Donna ... LP
Decca/CAM/Sugar (Italy), 1974. New Copy ... $24.99
A beautiful 70s soundtrack from Armando Trovajoli – the Italian composer who's maybe best known for a few key scores in the 60s, but who continued to do really wonderful work as the years went on! The set's overflowing with the kind of well-spaced moments that makes some of Trovajoli's best work so wonderful – a mode that was clearly learned from bossa and jazz, but taken to different Italian cinematic territory with the instrumentation – which here includes great use of piano and keyboards, at times almost echoing the style of his contemporary, Stelvio Cipriani! Yet there's also some other instrumentation and elements that change things up nicely too, which makes for a really great sense of variety throughout. Titles include the vocal track "Che Vuole Questa Musica Stasera", sung by Peppino Gagliardi – plus "Woman's Perfume",K "Benedicte", "In The Dark", "Passeggiando Per Genova", "Per La Strada", "Tuo Amore Mio", "Those Lazy Days", and "Lungo Il Marciapiede". VariousBoom – Italian Jazz Soundtracks At Their Finest 1959 to 1969 ... CD
Sugar/Decca, Late 50s/1960s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A really fantastic collection – one that gets at the full range of jazz-based sounds in Italian soundtracks during the 60s – served up here on a set of tracks that go way past the obvious! This isn't a "best of" set – and instead, it digs very deeply, and even features some unissued material – brought together in an array of tracks that are a complete delight, even to our ears – which have been trained on Italian soundtrack reissues for decades! Most of the music here is from that key point when Italian scoring was moving from larger orchestras to smaller combos – most right before the groovy/mod years, and taking advantage of the very strong rising tide of top-shelf jazz soloists on the Italian scene – players who are far too many to mention here, but who really help ensure that the work is fantastic! Imagine the best jazz-based soundtracks from Hollywood and France in the late 50s – then imagine work better than that, and that's what you'll get here – on a huge selection of 33 tracks by artists who include Francesco De Masi, Piero Umiliani, Luis Bacalov, Marcelli Gigante, Luiz Bonfa, Piero Piccioni, Ivan Vandor, Aldo Piga, Carlo Savina, Carlo Rustichelli, and others. Sugar/Decca (Italy), 1961. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the all-time classic Italian film scores – a groundbreaking soundtrack from Nino Rota, and one of the first Italian works of this nature to hit the record racks in the US! The music is a beautiful blend of whimsy and sadness – penned by Rota with a variety of light themes that dance together with a dreamy sort of quality – romantic one minute, dramatic the next – always handled with Nino's inventive sense of musical play! Larger orchestrations come into play with smaller combo elements that evoke the new world of jazz and rock on the scene in Rome – and the whole thing is a musical delight throughout – with titles that include "La Dolce Vita", "Cadillac", "Via Veneto", "Titoli Di Testa", and "Valzer". 2LP set features 26 tracks in all – many more than the original record! Three female singers/MC's with backing by the Sugarhill Gang Band – and rhymes that sound like they might have been written by the Sugarhill Gang. Maybe it's not up to the standards of other early female MC's like Sha Rock of the Funky 4 +1, but this is more like a 1979-era slow-tempo funk/dance track than a straight hip hop record. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ VariousPiombo – The Crime Funk Sound Of Italian Cinema 1973 to 1981 ... CD
CAM/Sugar (Italy), 1970s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
American film may have invented the genres of crime jazz and blacksploitation funk – but by the mid 70s, the Italian scene was really giving us a run for our money – as they turned out some amazing grooves for their legendary run of cop and crime films at the time! The movies were awash in music that really kept the action moving – heavy drums, badass basslines, wah wah guitar, and anything else that fit the spirit of a great chase or action scene. This collection brings together some of the best of that stretch – and, as with other of these recent Sugar productions, adds in some unreleased material that makes the package essential, even if you've already got work from this scene in your collection. Titles include "Il Cappotto Dilegno (edit)" by Riz Ortolani, "Poliziotto Spring M2" by Stelvio Cipriani, "Silkin Street" by Guido & Maurizio De Angelis, "Ordine Firmato Inbianco" by Carlo Savina, "Onore E Guapparia M7" by Filippo Trecca, "L'Intoccabile Mr Cliff" by Riz Ortolani, "I Gabbianivolano Basso M13" by Roberto Pregadio, "Body Guard" by Stelvio Cipriano, "Il Braccioviolento Della Mala M10" by Vassili Kojucharov, and "L'Assassino Hale Ore Contate" by Luis Bacalov. ✨✧ Ennio MorriconeBlue-Eyed Bandit (Il Bandito Dagli Occhi Azzurri) ... CD
Sugar/Decca, 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A cool change from the usual from Ennio Morricone – a later soundtrack, and one that features some surprisingly jazzy tracks! Part of the set features the more standard Morricone orchestrations you might expect – some really great tracks that have offbeat larger arrangements that are nicely unsettling, but in a completely charming way. But other tracks are even more striking – and feature performances by the trio of pianist Enrico Pierannunzi – working here at his most fluid and vibrant, with a style that's even more evocative than most of his standard albums! A few numbers have a groove we've never heard from Enrico, and some of the orchestral tracks are mighty groovy too – very different than what you might expect from the 1980 date of the film. Titles include "Cinque Quarti", "Double Face", "Citta Viva", "Madre Assente", "Stranamente Un Giorno", and "Per Enrico Riccardo E Roberto". CD

"We Got The Funk" is a tune that definitely earns its title – a classic bit of boogie – and one of the few really standout non-hip hop tracks from Sugar Hill back in the day! Plenty of fusion here – a heady brew of jazz, funk, and soul – all put together with a nice sense of tightness that really makes the grooves sparkle! A huge package of work from one of the first true superstars in hip hop – amazing DJ Grandmaster Flash, his MCs in the Furious Five, and a few other surprising guests along the way! Rather than look at the work of Flash on an album-by-album basis – which would quickly take you into some of the lesser-tier material from later years – this package follows his development over the course of key singles – which are then presented with all sorts of rare mixes from various formats as well! There's also two full albums – the early Sugarhill releases The Message and the UK-only Work Party – but the other seven CDs in the collection are brilliant dissections of the singles – with 99 titles in all, that run through cuts that include "Super Rappin", "It's Nasty", "Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash", "Flash To The Beat", "White Lines", "Beat Street", "Step Off", "We Don't Work For Free", "The Message", "The Message II", "Scorpio", "Showdown", "New York New York", "Jesse", "World War III", "We Don't Work For Free", and lots lots more!
