Brown SugarBrown Sugar Featuring Clydie King ... LP
Chelsea/Demon (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A great little record from Brown Sugar – a group who really soar here, thanks to the presence of Clydie King on lead vocals! King sung famously on many rock and soul sessions during the 60s and 70s – but she's a great talent in the spotlight, and really helps to give the record a lot of focus – uniting the group's mix of deep soul and southern elements – lots of burning underneath the rhythms, and horns compressed over the top – in a style that's a bit Muscle Shoals, but more restrained overall, and with a few moments that go for more of an east coast feel. Titles include "Soul Asylum", "Love Can Bring You Down", "Weep For Me", "Don't Hold Back", "Real Love", and "Moonlight & Taming You". LP, Vinyl record album

Brown SugarI'm In Love With A Dreadlocks – Brown Sugar & The Birth Of Lovers Rock 1977 to 1980 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
The first collection we've ever seen to do justice to the Brown Sugar trio from the UK reggae scene of the late 70s – a group who do a fantastic job of merging older sweet soul styles with a new lovers' vibe, all in a mode that's completely sublime! The group's noteworthy as the starting place of Caron Wheeler, who'd later rise to great fame in Soul II Soul – and Carol Simms, who'd later rise on her own as Kofi – but even without that later legacy, the music here is completely wonderful – and is presented with detailed notes, in a set that collects all the singles the trio recorded at the time with Dennis Bovell and John "Brownie T" Kpiaye. Brown Sugar are clearly influenced by the sweeter side of American group soul style in the late 60s – and even cover a few cuts from that era – yet they also have this bad-stepping style that really offers up the strongest current of the London style of the period – the crisper crackle and rootsier production approach that was really showing a scene coming into its own. Titles include "Black Pride", "Our Reggae Music", "Hello Stranger", "You & Your Smiling Face", "Loving Dreadlocks Dub", "Confession Hurts", "Proud", "Do You Really Love Me", "Hurtin", "Run Away Love",a nd "Dreaming Of Zion". Burnt Sugar ArkestraAngels Over Oakanda ... CD
Avantgroidd, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99
Wonderfully righteous work from Burnt Sugar Arkestra – a group who've been giving us great records for years, but who are maybe even more important to the scene than ever before! The core of the record is the long title track – a very jazzy tune that builds up over loops set down by composer Greg Tate, with a flowing, snakey vibe that allows for plenty of long trumpet, tenor, flute, and alto solos over the guitars and Fender Rhodes that work the rhythms – maybe almost in electric Miles territory, but more laidback. That tune is then reworked on a number of variations that are very different – mostly instrumental, as the main track – but finishing up with a bit of vocals near the end of the record – a great contribution from singer Lisala Beatty! Titles include "Angels Over Oakanda", "Repatriation Of The Midnight Moores", "Oakanda Overdrive", and "Lisala Oer Inna Oakanda". CD

Cleveland Crochet & The Sugar BeesHillbilly Ramblers & Sugar Bees ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $18.99 20.99
The complete history of an overlooked hero of cajun music – and a musician who's also quite a rocker as well – fiddler Cleveland Crochet, who cut some fantastic work for a handful of small Louisiana labels in the late 50s and early 60s – often with a great swampy blend of cajun fiddle and more rocking elements in the rhythm! Cleveland had one minor hit – the "Sugar Bee" mentioned in the title – but all the work here is equally great, pulled from a variety of small label recordings for companies that include Folk-Star, Khoury's, Goldband, Lyric and Swallow. In addition to tracks made under Cleveland's name, there's also work cut with Vorris "Shorty" LeBlanc and Jay Stutes – a total of 38 tracks in all, with titles that include "Sugar Bee", "Waltz Of A Broken Heart", "Rambler's Lonely Dream", "Good Morning Blues", "Telephone Port Arthur", "Sweet Thing", "Hound Dog Baby", "Drunkard's Dream", "Sha Meon Waltz", "Hey Boss Man", "Sweet Lick", and "My Little Cabbage". Sugar Pie De SantoGo Go Power – The Complete Chess Singles 1961 to 1966 ... CD
Chess/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A much-needed look at the mighty Sugar Pie DeSanto – a singer who really rocked Chess Records back in the 60s! DeSanto came to the label already boasting one hell of a groove – a rock-solid sense of rhythm that made all of her tunes groovers right from the get-go – and a raw vocal power that easily rivaled, if not beat, that of Etta James – her labelmate at Chess, and partner on a few duet tracks here! The collection's a non-stop soul party throughout – as upbeat as Northern Soul, but with plenty of deep soul elements as well – and it's the first time many of these cuts have been brought together on CD, and certainly never before as wonderful as this. Kent serves up some great notes and vintage photos with the package – the latter of which show Sugar Pie in action on stage, clearly one of the sexiest singers to work the circuit back in the 60s! Titles include "In The Basement (parts 1 & 2)", "Soulful Dress", "Witch For A Night", "Ask Me", "Good Timin", "Mr & Mrs", "Mama Didn't Raise No Fools", "Crazy Lovin", "There's Gonna Be Trouble", "Jump In My Chest", "Somewhere Down The Line", "Use What You Got", "Never Love A Stranger", "I Love You So Much", "Go Go Power", and "I Don't Wanna Fuss". Sugar MinottSugar Minott At Studio One ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $38.99 42.99
Seminal sounds from the mighty Sugar Minott – a singer who's sweet-voiced style was perfect for the changes going on at Studio One in the late 70s! Sugar grew up on the soulful styles of the rocksteady years – and here, as Studio One begins to step into some dancehall modes, his vocals provide a perfect link with the past – which sometimes comes from the way the label was reworking older rhythms and melodies in a subtle way – often with new lyrics from Minott that really transform the tunes! Currents of early dancehall and versioning flow through the mix of work here – and the set is a great illustration of this key moment in the evolution of reggae. Titles include "Vanity", "Please Be True", "Hang On Natty", "Jahovia", "Try Love", "Give A Hand", "Is It True", "Love Gonna Pack Up", "Give Me Jah Jah", "Party Time", "Jah Almighty", "Jah Jah Children", and "Change Your Ways". Mango/Hip-O Select, 1980. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic set from one of the original kings of the dancehall, nicknamed for his sweet vocal style! While "River Jordan" and "Hard Time Pressure" were big singles in a singles-driven genre, this set's solid all the way through, with great backing harmonies from Don Carlos & Lacksley Castell among others, supporting Minott's groovy lead, that wouldn't be out of place on a Windy city soul side from the 70s. The rhythms are laid out by a crack young band including Gladdy, Bingy Bunny, Steelie & Horsemouth Wallace at Channel One, under Minott's crisp production, with half of the finishing touches laid on by Barnabas at Channel One and the other half by Jammy at Tubby's. 10 tracks of prime early 80s reggae representing the best of a key transitional period fro Jamaican music, including "Mankind", "Jail House", "I'm Gonna Hold On", "Opressors Oppression", "Two Time Loser", "Black Roots", "Clean Runnings" and "Mr Babylon Man". The vocals come together with a really magical feel – sometimes mellow and drifty, ala The Association – sometimes vibrant and soaring, in a really catchy way! The whole album's great – with just a touch of Brit invasion guitar jangle behind the vocals at times – and titles include "Heat Wave", "We'll Meet Again", "If I Needed Someone", "Hey Joe", "Sugar & Spice", "July", "I Wanna Meet You", and "Ben Franklin's Almanac". A really lovely late-life portrait of Billie Holiday – an oversize book that's filled with black and white photographs taken during the month of April, 1957 – when Billie was headlining at the Sugar Hill club in Newark! Holiday's late troubles are well-known, and often etched upon her face on album covers from the period – but this book really gets past some of those too-familiar cliches, and captures the singer in a range of really vivid ways – onstage and off, outside and in, alone or with family, and always a really fantastic subject for the camera. ✨✧ Regional GarlandMixed Sugar – The Complete Works 1970 to 1987 ... CD
Now Again, 1970s/1980s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic anthology of Flint, MI soul great Regional Garland – 70s soul empires were built on lesser talent than you'll find on this set put together by Egon & Now Again! Garland is a performer, producer, songwriter and arranger of whom we were most familiar with for his work with the group Hunt's Determination – a taste of which is included here, along with Regional's recordings with The Perfections, 21st Generations, Mixed Sugar, Brilliance and others. Even the few Hunts Determination records we were familiar with show a fairly staggering stylistic range, while holding together as a tight whole – and that's all the more impressive with a broader collection of work with varying personnel here. The heart of the collection is early-to-late 70s recordings, from dancefloor soul, funk and strains of disco later in the decade – revelatory stuff for us. We knew the man was good, but, damn! The set also features several mid 80s recordings with that era's synth textured sound with the 70s soul vocals surprisingly well. Includes "I Need Love" & "Hey James" with 21st Generations, "Get On Down" & "Girl You Better Hurry" with The Perfections, "I Need Love" and "Are We Through" with Hunts Determination, "15 Ain't Young No More", "It's A Bad Feeling" and "Disco Jam Bam Bam" with Mixed Sugar, the previously unreleased "Gangster Girl" and "I'm Sad We've Broke Up", "I'm Falling In Love" with Vann & Reggie, "Hit Girl" with Brilliance and more. Sugarcane HarrisSugar Cane's Got The Blues (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
MPS/Promising (Germany), 1971. Used Gatefold ... $14.99
A really tripped-out, messed-up session from Don Sugarcane Harris – recorded live in Berlin, but with a freaky experimental style that's much farther out than most of his studio work! The group here is totally hip – a combo of mad hippies that includes Robert Wyatt on drums, Wolfgang Dauner on keyboards and electronics, and both Terje Rypdal and Volker Kriegel on guitars – playing with twin electric frenzy that adds a lot of great sound to the album! Sugarcane plays electric violin and sings just a tiny bit – and despite the "blues" in the title of the record, the album's more of a freaked-out fusion record than anything else – in the best MPS electric tradition of the time, thanks to the presence of Dauner and Kriegel. Titles include "Sugar Cane's Got The Blues", "Where's My Sunshine", "Liz Pineapple Wonderful", and "Song For My Father". CD

The album's the only one we've ever seen from Rocky, and it's got a sweet TK Records groove all the way through – rhythms that are definitely on the funkier side of Miami soul, arranged by Rocky himself, and produced to perfection by Willie Clarke! The tunes are all originals – mostly collaborations between Mizell and Clarke – and the album's got a great way of sounding smooth while still keeping things funky – that perfect Miami balance that would soon disappear when things got a bit more commercial. Al Dente (France), 2015. Used ... $0.99
A great new showcase for the music of Alex Puddu – the contemporary groover who's given us some wonderful music over the years – including his famous Golden Age Of Danish Pornography sets! This album's more of a back-to-basics affair for Puddu – recorded with a tight combo, and a very classic approach to mod jazz and funk – performed by a group that's very heavy on keyboards alongside sweet riffing guitar from Alex! The sound is tight, but never too smooth – and there's a few additional horns thrown into the mix, to augment the top end alongside the guitar, clavinet, Hammond, and Fender Rhodes – all with a sweet blend that's almost got a 70s blacksploitation vibe at times, but a bit looser and more spontaneous too. Puddu wrote, arranged, and produced – and most cuts are instrumental, but a few feature vocals from singer Duane Hobson. Stanley TurrentineSugar/Gilberto With Turrentine/Salt Song (with bonus tracks) ... CD
BGO (UK), 1971. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
3 classic albums Stanley Turrentine! Sugar was a big hit for Stanley and a pretty darn nice record of extended groovers, with a harder sound than you might expect! The original record's only got three cuts – all done in a mode that sounds a lot more like harder Prestige sessions from the same time – that great period when the label was stretching out with some electric piano jazz funk. This version includes the bonus track "Gibraltar (alternate version)" on top of the album tracks "Sugar", "Sunshine Alley" & "Impressions". Butch Cornell's on organ, and his work on the album's part of its success, as is the nice hard drumming of Billy Kaye, who actually hits an Idris Muhammad-ish groove at parts! Gilberto With Turrentine is an incredible batch headlined by the lovely Astrud Gilberto – a rare effort for the CTI label that has her teaming up with arranger Eumir Deodato and Turrentine – and other players include Airto, Sivuca, Hubert Laws, and Dom Um Romao. Tracks include classic versions of "Ponteio", "Vera Cruz", and "Zazueira" that are all some of the most grooving takes on the tunes ever – plus "Historia De Amor", "Where There's A Heartache", "Brazilian Tapestry", and "Wanting Things". Salt Song is an amazing album from Turrentine – quite different than most of his other sessions for CTI, but in a really great way! Stan's playing here with arrangements from Deodato – in a swirling, Brazilian jazz influenced mode that's similar to their work together with Astrud Gilberto – save for the fact that this set's all instrumental, with Turrentine's tenor in the frontline! Instrumentation includes some great keyboards from Deodato and Richard Tee – plus guitar from Eric Gale – and tracks include "Gibraltar", "Salt Song", "I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do", and "Storm" – plus the bonus "Vera Cruz". As with other Three Blind Mice albums from the time, the tracks here are all longish and open-ended – recorded with a nice sort of brightness that breaks from other jazz traditions, and moving in surprising ways at each new twist and turn. ✨✧ Stanley TurrentineCherry/Don't Mess With Mister T/Sugar Man (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CTI/BGO (UK), Early 70s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trio of classic CTI Records albums from tenorist Stanley Turrentine – with bonus tracks too! First up is Cherry – one of the best CTI albums from the early 70s – and one of Stanley Turrentine's funkiest records as well! The album's got a sharper edge than most other Turrentine albums of the time – a quality that goes beyond Stan's already soulful approach to the tenor, and which brings in some tight changes and more pronounced rhythms that really give the best cuts a great groove! The group's a sextet – with Bob James on electric piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, Cornell Dupree on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums – and titles include a monster version of Weldon Irvine's "Sister Sanctified" – a great funk tune that's probably best known as the sample for "My Philosophy" by BDP! Other tracks include "Speedball", "Cherry", and "The Revs". On Don't Mess With Mister T, Stanley Turrentine meets Bob James – on a record that's one of the 70s classics on CTI! Bob James handles the arrangements – with that laidback, mellowfunky approach to jazz that he helped pioneer at the time – lots of modal chords in the rhythms, and these wonderfully soulful solos by the great Stan himself! James plays keyboards on the set – and Harold Mabern adds some piano too – and the lineup also includes the mighty Eric Gale on guitar, and Idris Muhammad on drums. Titles include the great title cut – a remake of Marvin Gaye's "Don't Mess With Mister T", plus "Too Blue", "Two For T", and "I Could Never Repay Your Love". Sugar Man is a classic set from Stanley "Sugar Man" Turrentine – a nickname the reedman had at the time, given the success of his famous CTI Records version of "Sugar"! This set follows in that same great mode – jazzy, but a bit funky too – although couched with this gentle sense of soul that's perfect for that spacious style of soloing that Turrentine perfected over the years – a way of blowing openly, and without too much fuss – but managing to hit all the right notes along the way! There's a great glow to the whole record – an excellent easygoing sense of soul – and titles include an incredible reading of "Vera Cruz", done with Deodato on piano, and at a breakaway speed that's just great, and worth the price of the record alone! Other tracks feature piano by Harold Mabern or organ by Butch Cornell – and titles include "The Stretch", "Just As I Am", and "Pieces Of Dreams". Bonus tracks include "The More I See You", "Don't Mess With Mister T (alt)", "Mississippi City", and "Harlem Dawn". CD

Sugar/Decca, 1970s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A totally wonderful collection of music from the glory days of the Italian soundtrack scene – one that features some classic horror themes from the 70s, and also a fair bit of never-issued material too! The creepy image on the cover will give you a good idea of what you're in for here – music that goes way beyond the ordinary, used to score a host of horror films from a time when Italy was really setting a new standard for all things scary – and using music as a very big part of the overall presentation! As with other Italian work of the time, the scope of sounds is incredible – and production styles and studio techniques do even more to make familiar elements sound even more weird and wonderful. The set features 25 tracks in all – with unreleased titles that include "Minaccia Sulla Citta" by Daniele Patucchi, "Orinoco Prigioniere Del Sesso" by Marcello Giombini, "Bambola Sensuale" by Sante Maria Romitelli, "Giallo In Tensione" by Daniele Patucchi, and "Un Gioco Per Eveline" by Marcello Giombini – plus lots more by Gobin, Stefani Liberati, Franco Micalizzi, Stelvio Cipriani, Manuel De Sica, Bruno Nicolai, and Ennio Morricone. ✨✧ Stanley TurrentineCherry/Don't Mess With Mister T/Sugar Man (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CTI/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Luis BacalovLa Strega In Amore ... CD
CAM/Sugar (Italy), 1966. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A wonderful early soundtrack from Luis Bacalov – much jazzier than some of his later work, with a vibe that's right up there with some of the more jazz-based work of the Italian scene in the earlier part of the 60s! There's a cool wordless vocal from Nora Orlandi on a few tracks, and nice use of flute, piano, and percussion throughout – varied nicely, but with a really strong song-based sort of approach – so that the album's not entirely jazz in structure, but not far off either! Bacalov's always been great at more dramatic moments, but it's great to hear him working in a style like this – and there's a nice sense of variety on the record, which really keeps things interesting – especially as a few more guitar-based numbers move in to the mix. The sound gets a bit more tense at the end, but is still nice and spare – and titles include "La Strega In Amore", "Aura", "Due Donna Un Enigma", "Seduzione Diabolica", "Danza Greca", "Bruciata Viva", and "Consuleo". Jon LucienLive In NYC ... CD
Sugar Apple, 2003. Used ... $11.99
A recent set from vocalist Jon Lucien – but easily some of the greatest work he's ever recorded! The session's done with a freeness that goes beyond even Jon's classic RCA and Columbia albums – an acoustic setting that allows for more spontaneous expression and warmly flowing energy than we've ever heard – letting Jon really stretch out on longer readings of tunes that sparkle with his tremendous vocals! The core group backing him up are tight, but really keep things simple – getting past some of the slickness of Lucien's recent albums, and giving him some of the most strongly jazz-based backings of his career – while still retaining the free-flowing rhythms that showed up best on his RCA work. This is way more than just one of those "classic artists out for one more live set" albums – and it easily stands with our favorite 70s albums by Jon! Titles include "Sunny Day", "Out Of This World", "Creole Lady", "Best Is Yet To Come", "Dindi", "Take Me Away", "Love Me", "You're Sensational", and "Angel Eyes". CD

Sugar/Decca (Italy), Early 60s. New Copy ... $24.99 29.99
One of the first big international soundtracks to come from the Italian scene in the 60s – the start of a great run that would continue through the decade, although maybe not with results as strongly as this! The score is for a strange documentary-like film (the title means "World Gone To The Dogs"), and most of the tunes are dramatic – with a sweeping orchestral feel that has a few light instrumental moments. The big fame of this one is that it contains the theme that went onto become the 60s vocal standard "More" – but in this version, it's kind of submerged, and taken at a much slower pace – a theme that appears here and there, but also mixed with other really lively numbers too – always shifting the mood, to match the different settings in the film. Titles include "Free Way", "Models In Blue", "Life Savers Girls", "The Last Flight", "Dog Heat", "Cargo Cult", and "Purgatory". New expanded version – features a whopping 36 tracks in all – way more than the original album! CD

Fantastic early soundtrack material from Ennio Morricone – penned for one of the "mondo" films of the time – a 1964 shockumentary on the state of Italian youth! As such, it's got lots of short jazzy tunes that run at a pretty fast groove, ostensibly to show the dissipation of the kids as they learn how to party – almost inspired by the realist style of early 60s TV, with a mix of bold themes, and more somber, contemplative ones. I Cantori Moderni sing wordless dreamy vocals on some numbers – and the shorter tracks offer up a very different sound of Morricone than you might expect – one that's more linked to some of his earlier pop productions in Italy – and which really gives you an idea of the depth of his early talents, even before the spaghetti western boom! Titles include "Twist Delle Zitelle", "La City", "Matricole", "Senza Freno", "Le Facce", "Penso A Te", "Bianco E Nero", and "La Prima Volta". 2LP set features seven unreleased tracks – and two more tracks that appear on vinyl for the first time! A really breakout moment for The Artistics – and the start of a really sublime run with the great Brunswick Records! The group had already broken a bit on Okeh a few years before – securing a top spot on the Chicago scene with their bouncy northern soul groove – a love of rhythm that made them as much a favorite on dancefloors as they were with fans of harmony soul. But on this sweet set, things come together even better than before – thanks to strong leads by singer Marvin Smith, who brings a real sense of personality to the group's harmonies – and wonderful Brunswick studio help that includes Sonny Sanders arrangements and Carl Davis production. Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
Three full albums from Atlantic Starr – with lots of bonus tracks too! All In The Name Of Love has Atlantic Star at the height of their catchy commercial fame – bouncing along with rhythms that crossover nicely to the mainstream, yet still keep a bit of their previous funky edge intact! The groove here is almost in the style that Atlantic Starr inspired in so many other younger groups in the earlier part of the 80s – although it's also a bit more polished too. Most instrumentation is electric, and tunes are mostly written by the team of David and Wayne Lewis – both of whom sing on the record. Barbara Weathers also handles female vocals, and titles include "Once Lover At A Time", "Let The Sun In", "My Mistake", "I'm In Love", "Always", "Don't Take Me For Granted", and a version of Sam Dees' "All In The Name Of Love". We're Moving Up is one of the last in a long run of 80s hits from Atlantic Starr – a group who were already moving up the soul charts before the release of the album! The set continues their move into commercial territory started a few records before, but it also shakes loose of some of the colder sounds of 80s soul – and picks up a somewhat warmer vibe on the keyboards and rhythms. Porscha Martin sings female vocals with the group, and titles include "Under Your Spell", "Love Ain't Fair", "Woman's Touch", "We're Movin Up", "My Sugar", "You Deserve The Best", and "Don't Start The Fire". Love Crazy is a set that's got a nice change in groove from Atlantic Starr – a sound that's still got a lot of their best elements intact, but which also seems to bring on some of the best elements that were being introduced by the British scene too! Rhythms at points are maybe more in the Soul II Soul or Lisa Stansfield modes – which makes for some great tunes that really reinvigorate the group and update them for a new jack generation, while still holding onto the charms of the past. A few moments get more in a mellow quiet storm sound – all with the balance that made earlier Atlantic Starr albums classics – on titles that include "Love Crazy", "Hold On", "Masterpiece", "Girl Your Love's So Fine", "I Can't Wait", "If You Knew What's Good For You", and "Come Lover". 3CD package features all albums in tiny LP-styled jackets – with bonus tracks that include "One Lover At A Time (ext)", "Always (edit)", "Let The Sun Shine IN (ext rmx)", "All In The Name Of Love (single)", "My First Love (ext)", "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth ext mix)", "My First Love (7" edit)", and "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth underground mix)". Roy AyersVirgin Ubiquity – Unreleased Recordings 1976 to 1981 ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
It's like a dream come true – 13 previously unissued recordings by Roy Ayers, all from the height of his glory years on Polydor! Roy's work from this time is some of our favorite ever – a burning blend of jazz, soul, and funk – handled with impeccable charm, and a level of soul that few other artists of the time ever matched. Roy's genius was strongly documented at the time by a series of excellent Polydor albums – but there was also a heck of a lot of great material that never saw the light of day, and which is every bit as great as the classics that we've come to know and love over the years. Hearing this set is incredible – like upping our already-massive appreciation of Roy's talents, and like finding a lost corner of soul music history that nobody's ever heard before. The tunes are all amazing – a great blend of jazzy soul, mellow soul, and dancefloor groovers – and the package is only the tip of the iceberg, from what we've been told! The full album does a great job to not cross over too much with the 12" singles previously issued in this "Virgin" series – and titles include "What's The T", "I Really Love You", "Sugar", "Mystery Of Love", "Green & Gold", "Brand New Feeling", "I Did It In Seattle", "I Just Wanna Give It Up", "Together Forever", "Boogie Down", "I Am Your Mind", and a great alternate version of "Mystic Voyage"! Erykah BaduWorldwide Underground ... LP
Motown, 2003. New Copy ... $19.99 21.98
A nice one from Badu – one with a depth of feeling and genuine soulful vibes that live up to its title, despite the fact that she records for one of the world's biggest media conglomerates! It's all about the vibe here. Erykah rolls her syllables, scats and emotes feelings more than an actual narrative in the strongest of these cuts. It's not that she's forgone lyrics, but it's all about the ambience, not radio sing-a-longs. She also dives head first into her organic soul and hip hop hybrid sound a little more sparingly, but still better than most who that followed her lead post-Baduizm. She channels Donald Byrd on the great "Think Twice", which is pretty indicative of the vibe as a whole. The groove is sorta mellow, but in a very tripped-out way, with deep organ washes and synth tones, scratchy soul guitar, and crisp organic beats. There's an appearance by Dead Prez on "Steady On The Grind", and a really sweet old school flavored remake of the great "Love Of My Life" track from the Brown Sugar soundtrack with Queen Latifah and Bahamadia, but for the most part Erykah is sweating soul on her own spiritual plane here. It's gonna take a little while to sink in, but this may be her best album (despite whatever naysaying BS you may read in mainstream reviews.) Tracks include "Bump It", the great single "Danger", "Woo", "Back In The Day" and "I Want You". LP, Vinyl record album

Uni/Future Shock (Italy), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... About September 10, 2021 (delayed)
One of the wildest albums by the funky conga player. The title track, "Lion Walk" runs through all of side one, and has a weird, tripped-out sloppy funk feel, with guitar and sax solos over Big Black's moody congas. Side two has three long songs, with a groove that's not as good, but still pretty dark and moody: "Tell Me, Do Your Conscience Bother You", "Love, Sweet Like Sugar Cane" and "Come On Down To The Beach". A rare later soundtrack from Dutch composer Ruud Bos – best known for some very funky work at the start of the 70s, and still going strong here a decade later! The score's got a much more mid 70s vibe than you'd expect – like some of the best American cop show work of the early 70s, with jazzy instrumentation intertwined with larger orchestrations – handled by Nat Peck, who had a fair bit of jazz experience himself – which means that he really lets the best elements of the music come forth and blossom! A number of tracks are upbeat and quickly-grooving – and those are mixed with some shorter scene-setting moments that balance the whole thing out strongly – and make the whole package feel like a long suite of sounds, dedicated to this lost film. There's a whopping 30 tracks in all – and titles include "Longing", "Secret Affair", "At Labour", "Sugar", "Happy House", "In Love", "Romance", "Start", "Casino", "Jack's Death", and the well-titled "Sexy Music". ✨✧ Vashti BunyanSome Things Just Stick In Your Mind – Singles & Demos 1964 to 1967 ... LP
DiCristina, Mid 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 19.98
Beautiful early work from British singer Vashti Bunyan – an important figure in the acid folk scene at the end of the 60s, heard here on some really wonderful work from a few years before! Some of the tracks have a really trippy style, and others are a bit more like conventional Brit girl pop of the time – but given a very weird twist overall, with a sound that's quite hard to describe! Vashti's vocals have these really dark qualities overall – and even when the backings are fuller (which often they are not), there's a sad, earthy feel to her singing. But equally great is her guitar work – heard with more prominence on most of the album's previously-unissued tracks from mid 60s tapes. Bunyan plays with these warm harmonics that kind of nestle and bristle underneath her vocals – pushing the tunes up with a sense of brightness in contrast to the voice – almost in a Nick Drake sort of way (and trust us, we don't throw around comparisons to his music easily!) The package is a wonderful look at these almost-lost years of Vashti's career – and it features both sides of her Decca and Columbia singles, an unreleased Immediate single, and a lot more tracks pulled from rare tapes from 1964, 1966, and 1967! Set features 25 tracks that include "Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind", "Train Song", "Love Song", "Winter Is Blue", "Leave Me", "How Do I Know", "Go Before Dawn", "Girl's Song In Winter", "Don't Believe", "17 Pink Sugar Elephants", "Someday", and "I Know". Captain SkyPop Goes The Captain ... LP
AVI/Past Due, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
The second smoking album from Captain Sky – a Windy City funk legend, and one who's cut from some of the same cloth as Bootsy Collins or Rick James! Like both of those artists, the Captain's a pretty imposing figure, with a bit of future flash to his looks – and while he uses lots of the basslines that might tie him to Bootsy and the P-Funk universe, he's also got a groove that mixes in some of the more sophisticated modes you'd know from the Chicago scene at the time! There's almost a late Curtom feel to the record – tight funk, a bit faster than early in the decade, but still not really disco – and with some mellow midtempo tracks that balance things out beautifully – and really show Sky evolving past the style of his first record. Tracks include "Moonchild", "Fearless", "Cream & Sugar", "Rebirth", "Hero", "Double You SKY", and "Ker-Runch". LP, Vinyl record album

A classic slice of Jamaican roots – and an essential record from the godlike hands of Lee Perry! The set was produced by Perry at Black Ark – and instantly became the stuff of legend, even though the initial version of the album got very limited exposure – which has led to years of differing reissues and versions of the record! Yet the core sound is always very much in place, no matter what the setting – very spiritual lyrics from the group themselves, set to nicely stripped-down rhythms and instrumentation that are a great contrast to the wave of more polished international reggae releases that were garnering mainstream attention at the time. The lasting power of the set is proof that maybe when it comes to roots, you've got to really go to the roots to get it right – as you'll hear on classic tracks that include "La La Bam Bam", "Fisherman", "Congoman", "Children Crying", "Open Up The Gate", and "The Wrong Thing". Kudu, 1975. Very Good ... $7.99
Not really a symphony, but a great album that features the soulful alto sax of Hank Crawford blowing over some rich larger backings from David Matthews – all with a sweetly funky Kudu sound! The style's a bit more polished than some of the other Kudu sessions of the time – almost a bit disco or clubby at times – as Matthews brings in a fair bit of strings and horns to the backings, and also has some female backing singers sweetening up the sound. But as usual with Kudu, the record's no cheap cash-in sort of set – and Matthews ensures that it's got a tightly-crafted groove that's almost like mainstream 70s soundtrack funk at its best moments. Keyboards are by Richard Tee and Leon Pendarvis – and titles include "Sugar Free", "I Hear A Symphony", "The Stripper", "Hang It On The Ceiling", and "Love Won't Let Me Wait". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy, 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... $24.99 29.99
A fantastic never-heard performance from one of the greatest pianists of the 20th Century – a live date recorded in Madison, WI – and exactly the kind of record that reminds us why Bill Evans in a live setting is maybe even more revelatory than Bill Evans in the studio! It's impossible to describe what makes this record wonderful, but the whole thing just grabs us right from the very first note – with that balance of strength and subtlety that makes Evans in the 70s so amazing – balanced out by equally mesmerizing work from Eddie Gomez on bass! The Gomez/Evans interplay is captured fantastically here – and given just the right sort of subtle support from Eliot Zigmund on drums – and despite the fact that the material has never been issued before, the whole thing's completely top-level work, and on a par with anything in Bill's catalog of the 70s. Titles include "Up With The Lark", "Sugar Plum", "Minha", "All Of You", "Some Other Time", "Someday My Prince Will Come", and "TTT". LP, Vinyl record album

Marty Morell is on drums – as ever, a master of understatement, which really lets us fall in love all over again with Gomez and Evans – and the set features 18 tracks all recorded at Ronnie Scott's club in Soho, in December of 1969 – titles that include "So What", "Very Early", "Sugar Plum", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "Waltz For Debby", "Round Midnight", "Elsa", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Turn Out The Stars", "Goodbye", "Re Person I Knew", and "Two Lonely People". Sublime live work from the great Bill Evans – two different radio performances from the 70s, both of them great! The first half might be the most notable – as the set just features the bass of Eddie Gomez alongside Bill's piano – a pairing we love so much, and which sounds so incredible, we don't even miss the drums at all – because Eddie's got such an inherent sense of rhythm that he fits perfectly with Evans' stunning approach to the piano – on titles that include "Two Lonely People", "Some Other Time", "Up With The Lark", and "TTT". Drummer Elliot Zigmund joins the duo on the second half of the set – but as with his other great work with the trio during the decade, he's a master of understatement – and still really lets Gomez and Evans control the flow – especially Bill, who often begins tunes in a way that feels as if he's not even going to wait for the others to join in! Blue Note, 1968. Very Good ... $59.99
A key meeting between the Three Sounds trio and the amazing Monk Higgins – done at a time when Higgins was taking his Chicago-crafted grooves to work on the west coast – and doing some really wonderful productions with Dee Ervin! The set features full Higgins backings throughout – a mix of jazz and strings that takes the usual Gene Harris sound into territory that you'd be much more likely to hear on Cadet Records back in Chi-town – a very hip, very soulful style that's totally great throughout, and a much-needed break from the straighter piano trio sound of other 60s albums the group did on Blue Note. Some tracks are laidback, but others are hard and funky – the kind of sock-solid cuts that have made the album a favorite with sample heads and soul dancers over the years – much heavier keyboard work than we'd ever heard before from Gene Harris, and a great precursor to funky favorites to come. Cuts include the excellent numbers "Sitting Duck", "Sugar Hill", "Black Gold", and "Book of Slim" – plus "Elegant Soul", "African Sweets", and "Walls Of Respect". LP, Vinyl record album

The biggest collection of work we've ever seen from early southern soul star Wilbert Harrison – a set that goes way past the early hits that usually make up his tiny greatest hits features on the market – to include a whopping 70 titles that takes the Harrison journey all the way through the 60s, up to his rare mid 70s album for the Chelsea Records label! Throughout the set, Harrison's a hell of a singer – a talent who helped first forge the sound of southern soul with his R&B work of the late 50s, then moved into a strong later collaboration with New Orleans production legends Marshall Sehorn and Allen Toussaint – who really helped Wilbert hone his groove! We've honestly not seen much of this material on CD over the years – and the set's overflowing with rare cuts that include "Girls On Parade", "Drafted", "Say It Again", "Broke", "Off To Work Again", "After Graduation", "Get It While You Can", "Sugar Lump", "The Horse", "A Woman Is Trouble", "Your Three Letters", "It's Been A Long Time", "From The Bottom Of My Heart", "My Dream", "Coming Down With Love", "Loving Operator", "I Will Never Trust Another Woman", "Going To The River", "Honest I Do", and lots lots more! Some of the greatest recordings ever made by pianist Hampton Hawes – extremely different from most of his earlier sides, done with loads of cool 70s electric touches! The first album on this 2-in-1 set is the excellent live album Playin In The Yard – a killer session at Montreux in 1973, done with a light open-ended groove that's got a sweet mellow feel. The record is similar to some of Ahmad Jamal's best work from the same time – with a sound that's not exactly funk, but which features some killer work on Fender Rhodes – stretched out over long tunes with a tremendously soulful approach! Titles include "Double Trouble", "Pink Peaches", "De De", and "Stella By Starlight". Next up is the David Axelrod-assisted album Northern Windows – a sweet batch of funky cuts with arrangements and backings handled by Axe! The record really bubbles with the warm and soulful approach Axelrod was using at Fantasy – kind of a step off his stark modern sound at Capitol, but still done with just the right amount of space and appreciation of a funky rhythm. The great Carol Kaye is on bass, and Hawes plays some totally sweeeeeeeet electric keys on the set – really stretching out on tracks that include "Sierra Morena", "Go Down Moses", "Web", "Tune Axle Grease", and "C&H Sugar". A quintessential snapshot of the rawer roots of the 90s emo scene! Oakland's Indian Summer only lasted about a year, and recorded a bunch of songs issued as 7 inches or on compilations, but never issued a proper LP in their short time as an active band. Most of their songs have fragile melodic buildups to cathartic roaring end – and a raw sound that really does feel a lot more earnestly real than the more polished followers who made it to the major labels and mainstream alternative rock radio later in the decade. Great grooves from Jackson Conti – not a dude, but a duo – one that features Madlib teamed with Mamao, drummer from the legendary Azymuth! The album's got a really unique feel – one that mixes Madlib's chunky, fuzzy style of production with some of the cleaner, jazzier Azymuth grooves of late – a combination that shouldn't work so well, but which comes across with really amazing results! There's a bit of beats on the set, but a fair bit of the percussion is acoustic too – making for more warmth than before from Madlib – almost a transplantation of the Yesterday's New Quintet sound to the sunnier Rio scene. Keyboards have a strong role too – often with the sort of edgey, compelling tones you'd hear on the first few Azymuth recordings of the 70s – and other instrumentation includes bits of guitar, flute, sax, and other well-placed touches – but all used in weird ways that are somewhere between typical jazz and Brazilian modes. King CurtisGet Ready ... CD
Atco/Wounded Bird, 1970. Used ... $6.99
Sly soul from the great King Curtis – one of his last albums ever, and one of his best as well! There's a hip sort of edge to the record that's different from the Curtis groove of the mid 60s – less standard soul instrumental covers, and a much more righteous feel overall – part of the vibe that King had been crafting for others in the late 60s Atlantic studios, and partly the funky undercurrents that would often only show up on some of his 45 releases for the label! The backing group here is really great – with rhythm work from Eddie Hinton on guitar, Barry Beckett on keyboards, David Hood on bass, and Roger Hawkins on drums – and solo moments from Cornell Dupree on lead guitar, and both Joe Newman and Ernie Royal on trumpets. King produced the record himself, and one cut features slightly different instrumentation – with organ by Jimmy Smith and piano by Richard Tee. Titles include "Floatin", "Sugar Foot", "Soulin", "Teasin", "Let It Be", "Someday We'll Be Together", "Something", and "Promenade". CD

King CurtisInstant Groove/Get Ready ... CD
Atco/Wounded Bird, 1969/1970. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
A pair of classics from one of the best saxophonists in soul music – back to back on a single CD! First up is an Instant Groove from King Curtis – and a record that's even more deeply soulful than some of his other Atlantic albums! The title cut's a killer – a hard-vamping number that pushed funk further into the mainstream back in the day – and lots of the rest of the album follows suit, by bringing in some of the rougher King Curtis edges that usually only showed up on b-sides of 45s – while other full albums usually focused on sweeter sounds. There's a few of those here too – but even those tracks have a looser, more personal feel than before – not as much "perfect" soul sax, and a bit more grit. Arrangements are by Arif Mardin and King Curtis – and Duane Allman plays guiter on some cuts! Titles include "The Weight", "Sing A Simple Song", "Instant Groove", "Hey Jude", "Games People Play", "La Jeanne", and "Foot Pattin". Get Ready is sly soul from the great King Curtis – one of his last albums ever, and one of his best as well! Rahsaan Roland KirkKirkatron/Boogie-Woogie String Along For Real ... CD
Warner/Collectables, 1977/1978. Used ... $9.99
Later genius from Rahsaan Roland Kirk – 2 totally great albums packaged together in one set! Kirk-a-tron is a record of wonderful depth and soul, and a session that moves back to the straighter jazz focus of some of his work from the Mercury years – yet still keeps all the personality and charm of the best Atlantic sides! Roland's playing in a warm jazzy mode that still features some of his wit and tricks – but which also is even more nicely in a straight jazz vein on the album's best tracks – rolling out in a gently soulful 70s mode that features some slight electric touches, but which preserves a main focus on his own soulful work on a variety of saxes and flute. The lineup is great too – with a shifting group of players that include Hilton Ruiz, Billy Butler, Walter Perkins, and even the great Trudy Pitts – and titles include "Sugar", "Serenade To A Cuckoo", "The Christmas Song", "Los Angeles Negro Chorus", "Bright Moments", "Night In Tunisia", and "J. Griff's Blues". Boogie Woogie String Along For Real is Roland Kirk's last album – and a return to traditional forms, as might be hinted at by the title! In a way, some of Kirk's later work is similar to that of Mingus – in that both had been pioneering modernists in their earlier years, then turned heavily towards the traditional forms that inspired their greatness in the first place. Of course, Kirk's work could never be totally "trad" – and even though the album has him running through more swing and boogie woogie material, it's still quite nutty, thanks to help from a hip group of players that includes William S Fischer, Steve Turre, and Hilton Ruiz. Titles include "Hey Babebips", "Make Me A Pallet On the Floor", "Watergate Blues", and "Dorthaan's Walk". CD

Josh LawrenceTriptych ... CD
Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
A really wonderful album from trumpeter Josh Lawrence – a very strong-voiced talent who's got a way of being bright and sharp at the same time, and who can always bring lots of his own compositional strengths to bear as well! The core group is a quartet – with Lawrence blowing beautifully over piano from Zaccai Curtis, bass from Luques Curtis, and drums from Anwar Marshall – and the set also features some great alto from Caleb Curtis on two tracks, balancing out the sound of Josh in this strongly soulful spirit! Brian Charette brings some organ to the album's final track – a great remake of the Earth Wind & Fire tune "That's The Way Of The World" – and all other titles are Lawrence originals, with tunes that include "We're Happiest Together", "Composition #2", "Wind", "Earth", "Sugar Hill Stroll", and "Sunset In Santa Barbara". Barbara LewisComplete Atlantic Singles ... CD
Atlantic/Real Gone, Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99 25.99
The best-ever collection of work we've ever seen from Barbara Lewis – and the first set to really give the soul singer her due! Lewis was a hell of a vocalist back in the 60s – an artist who could be classy one minute, and gutsy the next – often working with key production from the great Ollie McLaughlin – a Detroit talent from the time, and one who crafted a really unique groove with Barbara! The result is a batch of tracks that go way beyond familiar 60s soul – and way beyond Barbara's better-known hits too – a wealth of under-discovered tunes that really shows a lot of development, especially as the 60s move on. There's loads of tracks on here we've not heard in years – and titles include "Fool Fool Fool", "On Bended Knees", "You're A Dream Maker", "I'm All You've Got", "I'll Keep Believing", "Don't Forget About Me", "It's Magic", "Make Me Belong To You", "I Remember The Feeling", "I'll Make Him Love Me", "Sho Nuff", "Make Me Your Baby", "Love To Be Loved", "Think A Little Sugar", "My Mama Told Me", "Snap Your Fingers", "Pushin A Good Thing Too Far", "Come Home", "Baby I'm Yours", and "I Say Love". The first album by Mance Lipscomb – and one of the first albums issued by legendary roots imprint Arhoolie Records! This is beautiful, acoustic country blues in purely great form – holds up as well as anything made by his peers of the time. As the folk revival was taking flight in the late 50s and early 60s, true blue, downhome figures like Mance were getting love and respect all over the world, some recording for the first time ever. This is one of those cases and the world's better for it. Titles include "Ella Speed", "Freddie", "Sugar Babe It's All Over Now", "Baby Please Don't Go", "Ain't Gonna Rain No Mo", and "One Thin Dime". LP, Vinyl record album

Barbara LynnMovin On A Groove – Blues & Soul Situation (with bonus track) ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2003. New Copy ... $19.99
Barbara Lynn was one of the all-time female soul greats of the 60s – a really strong, independent artist who was more than just a singer – as she also played guitar on her records and wrote a fair bit of her own material too – a quality that really set Barbara apart from the pack, and helped her continue making great music for many years longer than most of her contemporaries! That legacy definitely continues here – in a really wonderful set that was recorded at the start of the century, but with a nicely stripped-down vibe, and a lean quality that really keeps all of Barbara's best deep soul styles in place! There's none of the too-lofty arrangements or the overblown attempts to be "authentic" that sometimes happen when an older soul singer comes into a contemporary studio – just clear, focused work by a southern soul legend, still sounding her best. Titles include "He Ain't Gonna Do Right", "You Don't Sleep At Night", "Matt's Hat", "I'll Suffer", "Sugar Coated Love", "I'm A Good Woman", "He Ain't Gonna Do Right", and "I'm Not Doing Nothing Wrong". CD features the bonus track "Watch The One". CD
