IxtahueleEden Ahbez's Dharmaland ... CD
Subliminal Sounds (Sweden), 2021. New Copy ... $12.99
A beautiful tribute to the music of Eden Ahbez – the original "nature boy" himself, and a mystical west coast composer who was to the LA scene what Moondog was to New York! The songs here come from unrecorded sheet music left behind by Eden – songs composed in the early 60s, when he was stretching out even more than his postwar years of momentary fame – performed here by the group Ixtahuele, who use some of the home-made percussion instruments and flutes that Ahbez created himself! There's a very dreamy vibe to the whole thing – postwar exotica filtered though a more contemporary appreciation – but all without any sort of cheesy retro modes at all – instead, music that's very faithful to the Ahbez inspiration, yet never slavish either. Titles include "Dharma Man", "The Lion & The Fox", "Bwawto", "Fire Of The Soul", "The King & Queen Of Waters", and "Grapevine". CD
Also available Eden Ahbez's Dharmaland ... LP 30.99
