Christian Scott Atunde AdjuahStretch Music ... CD
Ropeadope, 2015. Used ... $6.99
A brilliant record and a big step for Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, at a point when he truly was stretching out creatively in a big way – seamlessly mixing classic electric jazz influences & modern electronic touches! Scott is on trumpet, his custom sirenette & reverse fluegelhorn, mixing earth-bound sounds and spacey atmosphere throughout – and the band includes Braxton Cook on alto, Lawrence Fields on piano and Rhodes, Corey King on trombone, and Corey Fonville and Joe Dyson Jr on a pretty impressive mix of drums and sampler atmosphere. It starts off strong with "Sunrise In Beijing", an impressive showcase for flautist Elena Pinderhughes, who really helps this one take flight over the spacey & stuttering percussion. Other tracks include "Twin", "Perspectives", "West Of The West", "Liberation Over Gangsterism", "Of A New Cool", "Tantric", "The Last Chieftain" and more. CD

Bud PowellLive In Lausanne 1962 ... CD
Stretch, 1962. Used ... $2.99
Live Bud Powell work from his later years – a well-recorded performance originally done for Swiss Radio, brought back nicely in this Chick Corea-produced set! The group here is a trio with Bud on piano, Bob Jacquillard on bass, and Mike Stevenot on drums – and Powell is definitely filled with the sort of fire that makes a recording like this well worth hearing – proof that just about any Bud Powell material from the time is pretty darn great, especially if it's as recorded as well as this! Titles include "All God's Children", "Confirmation", "I Remember Clifford", "Round Midnight", "Lover Come Back To Me", "Blues In The Closet", and "Evidence". CD

Cannonball AdderleyLive In Paris 1960/1961 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 29.99
Fantastic live material from Cannonball Adderley – a set that features material from a time when the alto player was really hitting his early stride, and maybe making even better material in a concert setting than in the studio! The bulk of the set features a 1961 performance at the Olympia in Paris, and there's a few earlier cuts from 1960 – and all tunes feature the great group of Cannonball on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, Victor Feldman on piano and vibes, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Haynes on drums – a very classic lineup that comes off perfectly throughout! The tunes are wonderfully long, and stretch out with the imaginative solos that always makes live work by the group so great – on titles that include "Dis Here", "The Chant", "Jeannine", "Autumn Leaves", "Sack O Woe", "Serenity", "Arriving Soon", "Lisa", "In Walked Ray", "Bohemia After Dark", and "New Delhi". Prestige/Ace (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $5.99 14.99
God bless Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt – two tremendous tenor talents who were taken from us all too soon – recorded here in the very freewheeling territory of Baltimore's famous Left Bank Jazz Society! As with most of the Left Bank sessions, the format is very free and open – long tracks that allow both musicians to really stretch out and solo – while getting superb rhythm accompaniment from Cedar Walton on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – a group who are just about to hit the world with their own power as the Eastern Rebellion group! Ammons blows tenor on four tracks, three of which have Stitt on tenor too – and one track just features Stitt on alto, and another features only the trio. Titles include "Blue N Boogie", "Stringin The Jug", "Ugetsu", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and "God Bless The Child". Previously unissued, too! CD

Neil Ardley's New Jazz OrchestraCamden 70 ... CD
Dusk Fire/BGO (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $12.99 17.99
A never-issued live set from the legendary Brit leader Neil Ardley – recorded right during his classic years, and featuring a host of leading jazz luminaries of his scene! The material features both original compositions by Neil, plus some surprising other inclusions as well – all wrapped together in some of the most creative jazz orchestra modes of the UK scene of the time, and played by a cast that includes Henry Lowther and Harry Beckett on trumpet, Mike Gibbs on trombone, Dick Heckstall-Smith on tenor and soprano sax, Barbara Thompson on alto and flute, Frank Jellett on vibes, and Dave Greenslade on Hammond and electric piano. The horns are mighty heavy – blowing both with a nice sense of force on the heads, but also allowing some good space for players to really stretch out and do their thing – and although Ardley's got a definite modern bent to his vision here, there's also plenty of stone groovy moments too. Titles include "Rope Ladder To The Moon", "Tanglewood", "Stratusfunk", "Dusk Fire", "Naima", "Rebirth", "Study", "Ballad", and "Le Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe". CD

Chet BakerMemories – Chet Baker Live In Tokyo ... CD
King (Japan), 1987. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 24.99 About February 1, 2025 (delayed)
A set recorded in Tokyo, but one that has the great Chet Baker working with players from the Dutch and American scenes – all coming together in a quartet session that's maybe one of the strongest records from Chet's later years! The material was recorded live – and Chet's got a surprisingly strong bite on his horn at times – very different than the wispier modes of European sessions from earlier in the decade – perhaps in part because of the superb rhythmic accompaniment he gets from Harold Danko on piano, Hein Van De Geyn on bass, and John Engels on drums! And as with all these late recordings, the shift in Chet's style is wonderful – even at times when he was "lost" to so many, he's still a master of phrasing – coming up with all these new modes of expression that are so different than his classic work – on long tracks that stretch out beautifully. Titles include "Arborway", "Broken Wing", "Four", "I'm A Fool To Want You", and "Seven Steps To Heaven". CD

Chet Baker & Philip CatherineThere'll Never Be Another You (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Timeless/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1985. New Copy ... $29.99 33.99
Chet Baker did so many wonderful things in his later years, which are often sadly overlooked except for those in the know – and one of the best was to start working with guitar more often, instead of piano – using the gentleness of the instrument to really change his style and the different way he shaped his notes! That approach is heard to perfection here – as Baker blows alongside guitarist Philip Catherine – a partner on other late sessions, but performing here without any other instrumentation at all – just his guitar and Chet's trumpet, on these beautiful long tracks that stretch out with a sublime sound throughout! Chet sings a bit, but his trumpet "voice" dominates, and is completely mesmerizing – on titles that include "Beatrice", "Leaving", "My Foolish Heart", and "There'll Never Be Another You". Excellent sounds from Ojo Balingo – a Nigerian juju artist from the same stretch as King Sunny Ade – but one whose music is much more obscure to audiences on this side of the Atlantic! Balingo's group here has the loose, spontaneous vibe that characterizes juju at its best – this real sense of jamming, especially in the criss-crossing of the percussion, which is tremendous throughout – a real driving force of the music, and exploding with all these melodic elements as much as rhythmic ones – so much so, that the talking between the drums speaks volumes, even before the vocals come into the mix. The whole thing's a masterpiece of creative percussion, mixed with other elements that creep in a bit more strongly on side two – and titles include "Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo", "Ayo Igbala Ni Mofe, "Igbe Eiye Oloburo", "Jide Babaloa & Bayo Babalola", and "Ile Aiye Ile Ese Ile Aiye Ogun". Bobby BareWinner & Other Losers/Hard Time Hungrys ... CD
RCA/Floating World (UK), 1975/1976. New Copy 2CD ... $10.99 16.99
A pair of 70s gems from the great Bobby Bare – back to back in a single set! First up is Winner & Other Losers – a set from a time when Bobby was really getting the freedom to do his own thing – which includes performing a lot of excellent tunes penned by his key collaborator Shel Silverstein! There's an easygoing charm that pervades the whole record – that wonderful way of putting over a song that Bare hit in his maturing years – with a quality that makes this stretch so different than his music from the previous decade. Arrangements, backings, and everything else about the record perfectly fits Bobby's approach – and titles include "Dropkick Me Jesus", "The Winner", "Climbin The Ladder & Climbin The Walls", "Bald Headed Woman", "My Better Half", "Brian Hennessey", "Lost In Austin", and "Yes Mr Rodgers". Hard Time Hungrys is a really cool concept album from the great Bobby Bare – a set that follows on the same strengths as his other Shel Silverstein-era gems for RCA, but which also has a unifying device with contributions from voices from the road – real old-timers that Bare has somehow tracked down and had brief conversations with as lead-ins to most of the tunes! The album is heavy on Silverstein-penned songs – and titles include "Hard Time Hungrys", "The Farmer Feeds Us All", "Back Home In Huntsville Again", "Bottles & Boxes", "Truck Driver Truck Driver", "The Unemployment Line", and "Alimony". A fantastic live set from reedman Gary Bartz – captured here with his ultra-hip NTU group – who you might know from their classic albums on Milestone in the 70s! One of the rare few records recorded by a young Andy Bey and his sisters! The group was an obscure jazz harmony trio formed by Andy in his earlier years – and it features him on piano, joining with the vocals of his two sisters Salome and Geradine Bey – in a soulful, moody style that's unlike anything else we can think of! Their three heavenly voices are backed by Kenny Burrell's guitar, Milt Hinton's bass, and Osie Johnson's drums, and there's lots of room around the arrangments for the Beys to stretch out and sing beautifully. ✨✧ Rupa BiswasDisco Jazz ... LP
Numero, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $17.99 23.99
A record that's got to be one of the coolest recorded in Calgary during the early 80s – as it offers up a really unusual blend of modes that definitely lives up to its title, and which also borrows a bit from Indian music as well! Singer Rupa Biswas fronts a group that's equally strong on the instrumental tip, and which allow for plenty of room in the tracks to let the players stretch out and solo – in a blend of keyboards and guitar with more traditional sarod and tablas! Rhythms are mostly upbeat, but in ways that are more interesting than the "disco" title implies – especially in 1982 – and the whole thing's maybe first a funky fusion record, which then borrows a bit from Indian percussion, then adds in Rupa's vocals in the lead. Titles include "Aaj Shanibar", "Moja Bhari Moja", "East West Shuffle", and the side-long jam "Ayee Morshume/Be Reham Duniya". LP, Vinyl record album

Art BlakeyArt Blakey & The Jazz Messengers (Savoy) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Savoy (Japan), 1957. Used ... Just Sold Out!
During the late 50s – after an initial burst of recordings with Blue Note, and before a later successful run for the label – Art Blakey recorded on a number of labels with a lesser-known version of The Jazz Messengers. This album's from that stretch – and like others from the period it's a darn nice batch of tracks, and while it lacks some of the polished tightness of the later Blue Notes it crackles with the energy that's been the Jazz Messengers trademark from day one. The group features Bill Hardman on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, and Sam Dockery on piano – and the set's a loose batch of hardbop numbers like "Casino", "Ugh!", "Mirage", "The Biddie Griddies", "Potpourri" and "Reflections Of Buhania". SAM (France), 1965. New Copy ... $34.99 39.99
One of the most unusual recordings we've ever heard from legendary drummer Art Blakey – not a Jazz Messengers session, but a rare Parisian performance by a quintet billed as the New Jazz Men! The lineup is fantastic – Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Nathan Davis on tenor, Jaki Byard on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass – players who express more modern intentions at times than some of Blakey's usual lineups – and who definitely earn the "new jazz" of their name – as they stretch out here on three long tracks that are superbly recorded by French radio ORTF! Hubbard is tremendous – really finding himself at this point in his career, and full of new phrasing and amazing sounds that really blow us away – and Davis is a real treat in this setting, which is every bit as great as his key overseas recordings of the period. Titles include a side-long version of "Crisis" – plus long readings of "The Hub" and "Blue Moon" – all wonderful! LP, Vinyl record album

Dee Dee BridgewaterDee Dee Bridgewater (1976)/Just Family/Bad For Me/Dee Dee Bridgewater (1980) ... CD
Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 22.99 About March 7, 2025
Four great albums from Dee Dee Bridgewatwer – a hell of a jazz singer, and also a great soul talent too! First up is a self-titled set from 1976 – Dee Dee Bridgewater's first album as a soul singer – recorded a few years after she first broke on the scene as a righteous jazz vocalist on hip early 70s classics! The sound here is different than the material Bridgewater started with, but still plenty great from a soul perspective – tightly-crafted, sophisticated work that features both uptempo and mellow cuts – in a mode that's quite similar to the Columbia work of Marlena Shaw – another former jazz vocalist who made a 70s shift to soul. Production is by Gene Page, Jerry Wexler, and Stephen Scheaffer – and the set was recorded in a variety of different setting that spin out over the course of the tracks. We're most partial to the mellow cuts – which trip along with some great spacey edges – and titles include a great version of "He's Gone", plus "My Prayer", "You Saved Me", "Goin Through The Motions", "It Ain't Easy", and "Every Man Wants Another Man's Woman". Just Family is a sweet funky fusion album that Dee Dee recorded for Elektra in the late 70s. The set was produced by Stanley Clarke, and has a soul/fusion sound that's not that different than his own work of the time, and which works very well with Dee Dee's sweet vocal approach. Players include Bobby Lyle, Ronnie Foster, George Duke, and other strong 70s fusion players – and overall, the record's probably Dee Dee's best non straight jazz album of the 70s. Tracks include "Sweet Rain", "Open Up Your Eyes", "Just Family", "Melody Maker", and "Children Are The Spirit (Of The World)". Bad For Me is one of Dee Dee Bridgewater's standout sets as a soul singer in the 70s – a mode that's quite different than the sound of Bridgewater you may know from her mostly-jazz career – but one that gets plenty of sharp help from the great George Duke! Duke produced the set – and really knows how to balance Dee Dee's jazz roots with some of the modern soul impulses of the set – letting her really soar on some mellower moments, while hewing to the groove on the more upbeat cuts – which may well be some of the strongest on the album. Throughout it all, Bridgewater is a model of care and class – very different than most mainstream R&B singers of the time – and titles include "Streetsinger", "For the Girls", "Love Won't Let Me Go", "Back Of Your Mind", and "Is This What The Feeling Gets". Last up is the second self-titled Dee Dee Bridgewater album, from 1980 – recorded during a brief break from jazz at the end of the 70s, and done with some sweetly grooving from Thom Bell! The sound here's a bit like that of some of the later Philly International work from the same stretch – a maturing style that still has a bit of the earlier groove in place, yet which also takes on a more sophisticated approach, especially on the mellower cuts and ballads. In a way, the format's a bit like that used for Jean Carn or Phyllis Hyman at the time – and like those singers, Dee Dee seems to work best here when she's got a nice gentle groove to bring out the jazzier inflections in her voice! Titles include "When You're In Love", "That's The Way Love Should Feel", "Give In To Love", "Lonely Disco Dancer", "One In A Million Guy", and "Jody (Whoever You Are)". CD

Elektra (Japan), 1980. Used ... $24.99
One of Dee Dee Bridgewater's few truly soul-based records – recorded during a brief break from jazz at the end of the 70s, and done with some sweetly grooving from Thom Bell! CD

Roy BrooksEthnic Expressions – Live At Small's Paradise NYC ... LP
Im-Hotep/P-Vine (Japan), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 49.99
Amazing sounds from drummer Roy Brooks – very spiritual work that's quite a change from his straighter soul jazz of the 60s! The album's right up there with Roy's better-known (though still rare) live performance at Town Hall – or his classic Free Slave session – and like those records, this one explodes with a raw power that's really amazing – heavy drums from Brooks, driving a collective of righteous musicians that really stretch out in the free space of the recording! The clineup shifts a bit from track to track, but there's a cohesive spirit to the record that comes from Brooks' bold spirit – a joyous, soulful, post-Coltrane sort of energy – let loose in the lead, to guide the talents of players who include John Stubblefield on tenor, Sonny Fortune on alto, Olu Dara and Cecil Bridgewater on trumpets, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone sax, Joe Bonner on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass. Eddie Jefferson makes an appearance on two tracks – singing much hipper than on any of his better-known recordings of the period – and titles include "The Last Prophet", "M'Jumbe", "Eboness", "The Smart Set", and "Eboness (Kwanza)". A really fantastic live performance from the great Sandy Bull – a set recorded right around the same time as his classic run of albums for Vanguard Records, but unissued at the time – and a key slice of Bull's genius from this crucial stretch in his career! As with Bull's other albums, the whole thing is instrumental – but being a live set, has a slightly different vibe – spare, up-close, and very personal – as Sandy shifts effortlessly between work on acoustic and electric guitars, and a bit of oud as well! Titles include "Bouree", "Manha De Carnaval", "Improvisation For Oud 1", "Electric Blend 2", and "No Deposit No Return Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent work from singer Deborah J Carter – an artist who's very much in command of herself here, and able to inflect even familiar songs with a very personal quality! The scope and stretch of Carter's vocals maybe reminds us a bit of Carmen Lundy at her best – and like Carmen, Deborah's a very self-possessed, soulful talent who really has a lot to offer – stepping out nicely here on a fresh mix of material. Backing is from the trio of Coen Molenaar on piano, Mark Zandveld on bass, and Enrique Firpi on drums – and titles include "Ahmad's Blues", "My Favorite Things", "Sister Sadie", "Perfect Stranger", "Girl Talk", "New York State Of Mind", and "Ten Minutes In Paris". America's never sounded better than in the hands of Italian sound library talent Daniela Casa – who does a great job here of serving up all these cool tracks that would have been right at home in a film set during the 70s! The music is a mix of themes that evoke different slices of the American experience – almost all of them with keyboards, and most with a nice current of funk as well – plenty of action elements that resonate nicely with the best Italian soundtracks of the crime/cop variety from the same stretch in time! Gene ChandlerBrunswick Complete Singles Collection ... CD
Brunswick/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Late 1960s. Used ... $29.99
Wonderful work from our favorite stretch of music from the legendary Gene Chandler – an artist who started out on Vee Jay Records, but really hit his prime here at Brunswick! Chandler was a key singer in the early years of soul – and some of his first recordings had strong appeal to doo wop and R&B crowds – but by the time of this set, Gene was really moving into some more mature, more sophisticated styles – an approach that easily rivals that of Chicago soul contemporaries Jerry Butler and Walter Jackson! Chandler's often a bit more upbeat and swinging than either of those – especially Jackson – but here, he shares a similar open, emotive quality – much more adult than before, and delivered with a confidence that's very different than earlier weepy pop. A number of cuts here are duets with the great Barbara Acklin – and titles include "Will I Find You", "Show Me The Way To Go", "The Girl Don't Care", "Love Won't Start", "There Was A Time", "Teacher Teacher", "Anywhere But Nowhere", "This Bitter Earth", "Familiar Footsteps", "My Love", "There Goes The Lover", and the sublime "Suicide" – maybe one of our favorite Gene Chandler tracks ever! The songs are mostly familiar numbers, not originals by trumpeter Dwayne Clemons – but the group more than makes magic on their own, with that special sort of mojo that the club always seems to bring to a performance! Other players include Amanda Sedgwick on alto, Aaron Johnson on tenor, Jin Joo Yoo on piano, Paul Gill on bass, and Taro Okamoto on drums – and titles include "Hey George", "Hornin In", "My Sweet Emmalina", "Smoke Rings", "Shadow & Act", and "I Cover The Waterfront". Impulse, 1963. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
A rare gem that's worth all the attention it's bound to get over the years – never-issued material from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – an instrumental session recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio on the day before his famous record with singer Johnny Hartman – completely fantastic throughout! The material here shows the group really starting to stretch out – Impressions would be their next record to follow, and its spirit is certainly in place here – as Coltrane blows magnificently on tenor and soprano sax, alongside McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. There's a few tunes that the group would fix on later, but which sound very different in this context – and there's even a few excellent numbers that didn't even receive titles at the time of recording. Tracks include "Untitled Original 11383", "Untitled Original 11386", "Slow Blues", "One Up One Down", "Vilia", "Impressions", and a short version of "Nature Boy". LP, Vinyl record album

2 classic John Coltrane albums in a single set! The package first offers up Traneing In – a beautiful album that more than lives up to its evocative title – an early session from John Coltrane, filled with long tracks that slide along brilliantly! As with many other classic Prestige albums from Trane, backing is by the trio of Red Garland piano, Paul Chambers bass, and Art Taylor drums – all holding back nicely when Coltrane opens up on his solos, but also coloring the tunes with soulful lyricism in a masterful understatement. The sound is about as classic as you can get during these early years in The Great One's career – and titles include "Traneing In", "Slow Dance", "Soft Lights & Sweet Music", and "Bass Blues". Next is Soultrane – a bold early statement from a young John Coltrane – and an album that really has him expanding his talents as a tenor soloist! Coltrane's working here in open-ended quartet format – with backing from the Red Garland trio that includes Paul Chambers and Art Taylor – on a set of longer tunes that really let the young Trane stretch out on his solos, unobstructed by any other horns in the lineup. There's a nice mix of hardbop ideals, gentle ballads, and personal soul to the set – and titles include Coltrane's classic reading of Tadd Dameron's "Good Bait", plus "I Want To Talk About You", "Russian Lullaby", and "Theme For Ernie". An extremely great album from Eddie Costa – one of the best of the all-great Mode sessions from 1957! In what is an odd meeting of players, especially for the label, Eddie's piano and vibes meet up with Art Farmer's trumpet, the alto of Phil Woods, bass of Teddy Kotick, and drums of Paul Motian – all of whom work together with the fluidity and soulfulness of some of the best Prestige sessions of the time. The horn work is tremendous – and it's hard to remember Woods sounding this great on other albums of the time, really cutting an edge next to Farmer's trumpet – which also has an incredible tone for the album, right up there with his Farmer's Market record! Prestige/Craft, Late 50s. New Copy 4LP ... $69.99 124.99
A beautiful tribute to one of the first great pairings of Hammond and tenor – the saxophone of Eddie Lockjaw Davis and the organ of Shirley Scott – presented here in four classic albums that would forever change the face of jazz! The "cookbook" in the title is a reference to the name of the first three records in the set – The Eddie Lockjaw Davis Cookbook records, volumes 1 to 3 – and the set is completed with the great album Smokin, which also pairs Scott and Davis together! The records were key dates for both players – for Davis, a way to firmly move into the world of jazz after roots in more R&B-styled recordings – on long tracks that really showed the world what a tremendous soloist he could be when he had the chance to stretch out. And for Scott, a way to showcase her budding talents on the Hammond – in ways that have a lot more bite than her later trio sides, and which also mark her as a different organ jazz stylist from contemporary Jimmy Smith. All four records here are presented with a new set of notes, and in a really wonderful package overall – finally together after all these years! LP, Vinyl record album

The sound here is tighter than the trippier records of before, but also never too smooth or commercial – still with plenty of cosmic influences in the funk, and a wealth of great keyboard work that rivals some of Herbie Hancock's best from the same stretch. George sings a bit himself – in a warmly compressed mode that's simply wonderful, and which further expands the grooves – and although much of the album's instrumentation comes from the keyboards, the record also features guest appearances from Airto on percussion and Ndugu on drums – as well as a bit of guest vocals from Flora Purim. A great little combo, and one with a fair bit of organ in the mix – more of a rock instrumental combo than a jazz one, but still with plenty of jazzy touches – thanks to the keyboards! The tunes here are all instrumental – a bit fuzzy at times, but nice and clear at others – and the group stretch out with a wonderful vibe that's much more soulful than some of their contemporaries on the Euro scene – a style that reminds us of the best British jazz rock moments at the end of the 60s, before part of that scene went a bit over the edge. Guitar and organ take the lead on most numbers, and there's almost a Colosseum sense of rhythm going on at the bottom. All titles are pretty great – and titles include "Faster & Faster", "Obsession", "On The Way To Eden", "Feeling In The Living", "Travelling", and "Reinyet Number". ✨✧ Duke Ellington & Count BasieFirst Time – The Count Meets The Duke ... LP
Columbia, 1962. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Hard to believe it took a few decades in the careers of both players for them to record together – but that's exactly what you've got here – a landmark meeting of Count Basie and Duke Ellington from the early 60s, near the tail end of Duke's classic stretch on Columbia! Teo Macero produced the session with just the right amount of care and class to keep the whole thing from being an exercise in cliche – and there's a surprising amount of depth here that you might not expect – the best modern elements of Duke's orchestra on Columbia, coming into play with a bit more of the fire and vamp of the Basie group at the time! Titles include "Battle Royal", "Wild Man", "Segue In C", "Jumpin At The Woodside", "To You", and "Take The A Train". LP, Vinyl record album

EmbryoEmbryo Meets The World ... LP
Sonorama (Germany), Late 1970s. New Copy ... $29.99 34.99 About February 7, 2025
Really fantastic lost work from Embryo – the German jazz combo who began with some funky/proggy work at the start of the 70s, then really started to stretch out and add some global elements to their music! The unissued tracks here come from that second stretch – tunes recorded in the studio on a global tour, and only just discovered – with all sorts of interesting contributions from musicians in cities that include Kabul, Cairo, and Athens – all musical spots that really leave their traces in the recordings! The Kabul Radio Orchestra back the group at times – and the performances also include artists from Syria and Eritrea too – blending all sorts of regional instrumentation and percussion with the group's work on keyboards, saxes, flute, vibes, and drums. Tracks are nice and long, and the music is as haunting as you might imagine – with titles that include "Nastaran", "Eritrean Strut", "Win Yannas Habib Roh", "Going Out Of Her Father's House", and "Anar Anar". Booker ErvinDown In the Dumps (aka Cookin) ... CD
Savoy, 1960/1978. Used ... $11.99 16.99
Killer stuff from Booker Ervin – and one of his first sessions as a leader! The album was recorded during a stretch when Ervin was coming into fame as a member of the Mingus group – and he's playing here with a number of Mingus-ites like Richard Williams on trumpet, Horace Parlan on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums – plus some great bass work from George Tucker – not exactly Mingus, but with a soulful undercurrent that's totally great! The record's got a hardbop groove with a modernist tinge, and it features some excellent playing by Booker that shows off both sides of his style – the deep Texas tenor roots, and some of the sharper tones he picked up with Mingus. Tracks include "Mister Wiggles", "Well Well", "Dee Da Do", and "Down in the Dumps" – plus two tracks from the Barbara Long LP on Savoy, on which Booker solos. CD

Booker ErvinTex Book Tenor ... CD
Blue Note, 1968. Used ... $9.99
Amazing later work from Booker Ervin – far more modern and far-reaching than you'd guess from the "Texas" title in the set! Although Ervin first came onto the scene as a strong-voiced tenorist from a Texas tradition, through the course of the 60s he'd really expanded his musical vision – working with Charles Mingus, Jaki Byard, and others to push his already-soulful sound into a freer-thinking mode that was one of the most compelling approaches to tenor at the time. And while this change had been documented on some key sides for Prestige and World Pacific at the time, this rare 1968 session for Blue Note is perhaps one of the best of the bunch – but oddly was somehow never issued at the time, and only made a brief appearance in 1976, as part of a 2LP set. Ervin's working here with a totally hip group – one that has Woody Shaw in the frontline on trumpet, and a rhythm team of Kenny Barron on piano, Jan Arnet on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all grooving with Ervin in styles that recall the modal vamping and soaring energy that Shaw would later bring to his own solo work in the 70s. Tracks are all longish, and filled with a sense of life and exploration that shows that Ervin was growing tremendously in this last stretch of his all-too-short life – never too free, always in control, yet roaming the skies in search of new notes and sounds! Titles include "Gichi", "Den Tex", "Lynn's Tune", "204", and an early version of Shaw's "In A Capricornian Way". CD

Far OutNihonjin ... LP
Everland (Austria), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... About December 1, 2024 (delayed)
Far Out indeed – an early 70s album from Japan's Far Out – the only album we've ever seen by the group, before they went on to work as The Far East Family Band! If you know that more famous group, you'll know the vibe here – a really unique version of psych, touched with a bit of noise – as the group stretch out on two slow-building tripped out jams that each take up a single side of the album! The first cut, "Too Many People", starts quiet and builds into a mighty behemoth of head nodding guitar rock hypnosis – both electric and acoustic – touched with some English language vocals, which are a nice surprise. The title track follows, again starting slow and quiet, and pulling you in slowly before refusing to let go of your senses! LP, Vinyl record album

Enja/Solid (Japan), 1992. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Never-failing genius from Art Farmer – recording here in his later years, and working in that long and open-ended mode we love so much! There's few trumpeters who could make a record like this work – but Farmer's got a tremendous ability to stretch out on longer tunes with well-crafted solos that make beautiful use of soundspace and texture – letting his trumpet almost float along in the air and find its own notes, while the trio of Geoff Keezer piano, Kenny Davis bass, and Lewis Nash on drums provide just the right sort of accompaniment. The album's got a grace that matches any of Art's excellent mid 70s sides from Japan – and is proof that his talents never waned as the years went on – making him one of the few talents from his generation who continued to create and invent beautifully over time. Titles include "Soul Eyes", "Isfahan", "Will You Still Be Mine", "Sad To Say", "Time On My Hands", and "Recorda Me". CD features the bonus track "Cherokee Sketches". CD

The second chapter of the underground Boston legacy of Dredd Foole & The Din – a strong stretch of material from a time when Dredd was working with the Volcano Suns! Early Din-related material had Mission Of Burma providing the instrumentation – and the shift here to Volcano Suns makes for music that's maybe a bit more in tune with the American underground of the mid 80s – that shift away from punk that made the Suns' own recordings so crucial, and which saw some of this material released during the glory days of Homestead Records! The package features two full albums – Eat My Dust Cleanse My Soul and Take Off Your Skin – both reissued here for the first time – plus lots of live material, recorded both at The Rat in Boston, and at CBGB – plus some rare studio material too – all in a package that has detailed notes, new mixing, and a total of 40 tracks in all. Eastbound/Ace (UK), 1972/1975. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
2 killers from organist Caesar Frazier – back to back on one CD! Hail Ceasar is a monster bit of funky jazz – filled with long tracks that all jam mightily, all at a level that matches or tops the best work coming out of Prestige or Blue Note Records at the time! The set is one of the rare few on the Eastbound jazz subsidiary of Detroit soul powerhouse Westbound Records – and it's the first to feature organist Ceasar Frazier as a leader – really grooving hard here with a Prestige-styled combo that includes Idris Muhammad on funky drums, Melvin Sparks on heavy guitar, and Houston Person on soulful sax – all produced with a gritty gritty edge by the legendary Bob Porter! The whole album's great – filled with incredible cuts that include a version of "Hicky-Burr", the first Bill Cosby theme – plus the tracks "Make It With You", "Running Away", "Hail Ceasar!", and "See-F". Ceasar Frazier 75 is a tightly grooving set that expands his sound a bit from the first! All the best elements are still in place here – including funky organ from Ceasar, production from jazz funk maestro Bob Porter, and a hip range of players that includes Horace Ott, Wilbur Bascomb, and Bernard Purdie. But the overall sound is somewhat shifted too – brought more into the tightly jamming jazz funk mode of the mid 70s – a bit richer and fuller overall, yet never in a way that's slick or sloppy – just more like some of the best later sides on Prestige or Fantasy from the same stretch. The record features a crazy version of the "Mighty Mouse Theme", a mellow take on the Isley's "Summer Breeze", Stevie Wonder's great "Living For The City", and the original "Funk It Down". CD

The feel is traditional, but never hokey or out of date – and there's some surprising modern currents to the phrasing of Freeman and the rhythms of Heard, almost in the way that Coleman Hawkins and Pee Wee Russell were hipping things up a bit during the same stretch. Dexter Gordon & Slide HamptonDay In Copenhagen ... CD
MPS (Germany), 1970. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
A tremendous European meeting of tenorist Dexter Gordon and trombonist Slide Hampton – brought together in this impeccable sextet session for MPS – a real standout in the label's straight jazz catalog over the years! By the time of the set, Gordon had been working heavily in Europe, especially Copenhagen – a locale where he was given ample freedom to stretch out and really explore his tone and phrasing. Hampton had also kicked around the continent a fair bit too, but in a tighter format, doing arrangements for others and working in bigger groups – and it's actually his careful touch that really helps shape the sound of the set – by bringing Gordon's groove into a focus more strongly than before, and reminding us that Dex was a great group player when he wanted to be! The frontline features Gordon's tenor, Hampton's trombone, and the trumpet of Dizzy Reece – often stating the heads in a fluidly soulful way, then breaking out nicely with individual voices – very much in the best Blue Note mode. Rhythm is by the trio of Kenny Drew on piano, Art Taylor on drums, and Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass – and titles include 3 excellent originals by Hampton – "A New Thing", "My Blues", and "A Day In Vienna" – plus a wicked almost-Lee Morgan-esque take on "What's New", and versions of "Shadow Of Your Smile" and "You Don't Know What Love Is". Two Amphonic sound library sets – back to back on a single CD! Shades Of Grey is a great set from Steve Gray – with some killer smooth jazz funk numbers! The feel's like a hip late 70s soundtrack, surprisingly wonderful overall – nice and tight, but never too uptight – that wonderful balance you'd find on some of the best sound library sets of the time! Steve Gray's at his best throughout – leading a large ensemble with the deftness of some of the best soundtrack maestros of the time – and titles include "El Sol", "Finely Fluted", "Simply Sophisticated", "Bill's Basement", "Only A Dream Away", and "Powerdrive". Brit Easy genius Syd Dale takes the helm on It's A Colourful World – a warm set of instrumental tunes dedicated to the west coast – topped with a San Francisco cover image, but with more than enough modes to stretch down highway 101 to Los Angeles! The sound is almost more early 70s than you'd guess from the date – not entirely funky, but quite picturesque – mixing some warm TV-styled soundtrack styles with evocative horns and woodwinds. Blue Note/Third Man, 1971. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99 42.99
A rare funky treasure – lost live material from Grant Green's hippest years at Blue Note – recorded in the early 70s funky years, but unissued for decades! The set's an incredibly smoking one – with loads of long tracks that really stretch out in a hard-hitting, bottom-heavy funky mode – no surprise, considering that Idris Muhammad's on drums, as part of a lineup that also includes Ronnie Foster on organ, Houston Person on tenor, and the more obscure Clarence Thomas on soprano sax and tenor! The groove here is a bit more Prestige jazz funk than Blue Note – the kind of rough-edged and spontaneous vibe that Rusty Bryant, Leon Spencer, and others cooked up during the early 70s on some of their best classics for that label – but Green's a perfect person to catch the spirit of that wildfire, and jams long and nicely here on 8 tracks that include "Farid", "Jan Jan", "One More Chance", "Patches", "I Am Somebody", "More Today Than Yesterday", "Bottom Of The Barrel", and "Walk On By". The Hawk Relaxes, but never lets himself go – and a set like this is a great illustration of the gentle genius that made so many later Coleman Hawkins records so great! The relaxed setting for this record is a perfect setting for Hawkins to open up and stretch out – working his tenor with a sound that has surprising modern edges, and unusual twists and turns, yet still all the careful economy of his better-known classic sides. There's a command of the instrument here that few other aging players ever seemed to muster – always a sense of new discovery and invention that marks the work strongly, even at a time when Hawkins could have been sitting on his laurels, playing the same old tune! Titles are all standards, but don't let that fool you – because there's plenty of magic in Coleman's versions of "Moonglow", "Just A Gigolo", "Speak Low", "When Day Is Done", and "I'll Never Be The Same". Arista/Virgin, 1984. Near Mint- ... $2.99
The last moment of greatness from Heaven 17 – and a set that continues the trend towards more soulful expression the group began with their previous record! This time around, the production is warmly touched with many soul-based elements that nicely offset the colder electro pop of their roots – aspects of which include the Phenix Horns, borrowed from Earth Wind & Fire, as well as the Afrodiziak backing vocal group, which features a young Caron Wheeler in her days before Soul II Soul! It may be a stretch, but the record does have a key place in the evolution of UK soul in the 1980s – certainly its most poppy aspect to be sure, but one that has an undeniable charm, and which really managed to bridge a number of different cultures with its approach. Piano genius Ahmad Jamal is really taking off here – letting his solos stretch out and his impeccable sense of timing really move things forward from his studio sides of the time – allowed plenty of freedom in the space of the Penthouse nightclub in Seattle during the mid 60s! The package features three different performances, all of which have sublime work on bass from Jamil Nasser – easily one of Jamal's greatest accompanists, and a player whose sense of rounded energy seems tied to the keys of Ahmad's piano at every single moment. Drums are by a different player on each date – Chuck Lampkin, Vernel Fournier, and Frank Gant – and titles include long versions of "Concern", "Feeling Good"," My First Love Song", "Who Can I Turn To", "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", "Invitation", and "Poinciana". Lonnie Johnson & Elmer SnowdenBlues & Ballads (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Prestige/Craft, 1960. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 36.99 On February 28, 2025
Rootsy blues from the brief stretch when Prestige Records was experimenting with non-jazz material – a back-to-basics session that features Johnson on electric guitar and vocals, Snowden on acoustic guitar, and only Wendell Marshall's jazz-trained bass to back the pair up. The work's in a style that's rootsier than the mainstream – almost an imagined past for this sort of blues, and one that was more aimed at the college and folksy crowd of the time than anyone else. Titles include "Savoy Blues", "I'll Get Along Somehow", "Haunted House", "Memories Of You", "I Found A Dream", and "Blues For Chris". LP, Vinyl record album

JuggaknotsRe:Release – Clear Blue Skies (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Coalmine, 1996/2003. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
A nicely expanded version of the great debut of The Juggaknots – one that adds in lots of bonus material to the original track list, and lets the group get reborn in a way to go head to head with all the sprawling triple-length projects of the early 2000s scene! The production work is great – very much inherited from a Native Tongues legacy, but given a special spin by the trio – who may well be one of the few brother acts in hip hop – a vibe that resonates strongly with mid 90s New York elements, but uses a nice current of wit to modulate some of the harder elements. Titles include "Romper Room", "Watch Ya Head (rmx)", "Trouble Man", "Jive Talk", "Loosifa", "Come Along", "Luvamaxin", "Clear Blue Skies", "Projections", "Sex Type Thang", "You Gotta Do One Of These Songs", "I'm Gonna Kill You", and "Up At Stretch & Bob". Features four bonus remixes too! LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes a panel insert with lyric sheet.)

King Sporty & The Root RockersFire Keep On Burning ... CD
Konduko/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A killer classic from King Sporty – one of the standout kings of Caribbean funk in the 70s – thanks to a handful of great records for the TK family of labels! Sporty takes congas and older rhythmic styles, and fits them nicely to more contemporary Miami club modes – really stretching things out with a great sense of jamming that echoes his roots – never letting up, even amidst some of the larger disco arrangements! The blend of styles is wonderful – and the tracks stretch out and soar, on titles that include "That Funky Groove", "Baboo", "Let's Go To The Disco", "Move & Groove", "Get On Down", and "Fire Keep On Burning". Allen KwelaBlack Beauty (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Matsuli (UK), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 38.99
A South African jazz session from the 70s, but one with a bit of a twist – as the instrumentation here is a bit larger than on some of the smaller combo sets of the time – in a way that gives guitarist Allen Kwela a really full, rich sort of backing! Kwela's solos are nicely laidback, and build strongly as the tunes stretch out – never really to be as tight or precise as a player like George Benson, even though he shares a similar sense of color – and with maybe some of the airiness of Sonny Greenwich at times. The set's filled with work from other all-star musicians – including Kippie Moeketsi and Barney Rachabane on saxes, Dennis Mpale on trumpet, and Sipho Gumede on bass – and titles include "Willow Vale", "Black Beauty", "Quaphela", and "Mild Storm". Hubert LawsCarnegie Hall ... LP
CTI, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $2.99
Maybe some of the coolest music ever recorded at Carnegie Hall – a wonderful venue that's perfect for the blend of soul and space of the CTI Records years of Hubert Laws! Laws' lead lines on flute really stretch out beautifully in the setting – given ample room to roam amidst a lineup that features Dave Friedman on vibes, Ron Carter on bass, and Bob James on piano and electric piano – all on tracks that have the same open, breathy quality as Hubert's sublime Afro Classic album. Like that set, there's a subtle dose of funk in the mix, but more focus on an airier mode up top – stretched out beautifully over a medley of Chick Corea's "Windows" and "Fire & Rain" – and on a 20 minute take of "Passacaglia In C Minor". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label stereo pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has light stains at the bottom 3 inches, with peeling from separation inside the gatefold, unglued bottom seam, stuck-on paper in back, and is lightly bent at the top right corner.)

John Lindberg & Hugh RaginTeam Work ... CD
Cecma (Italy), 1980. Used ... $5.99
Both John Lindberg and Hugh Ragin are players who really seem to thrive best in an open, unstructured setting – which makes this album of spare duets a perfect outing for both of them! The tunes are always nicely thought out – open-ended, yet never just free for free's sake – thanks partly to Lindberg's full sound on bass, which seems to lay this great platform from which Ragin can really stretch out and soar! Ragin plays both piccolo and standard trumpet – and titles include "Dada", "Dream", "Elements", "Team Work", and "Soundpost". CD
