✨✧ Method Man & Street LifeSquad Up (voc, inst) (red vinyl pressing) ... 7-inch
Street Education, 2019. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
Street Life & Method Man team up with Havoc of Mobb Deep in the production booth! The nod to classic Wu Tang production via the kung fu cinema sample that kicks it off, but rather than anchor this in nostalgia, it keeps that timeless, moody headnodding vibe without looking any more into the past for the sound, and the emcees are energetic and on point. Includes the vocal & instrumental versions. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Edgar HendricksEdgar Hendricks Sings For The Very Young ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy ... $6.99 16.98
A really unusual concept for a soul record, but one that works wonderfully all the way through – a mix of kid-oriented themes and warmly expressive vocals – with a vibe that almost feels like a hip 70s singer recording an album for Sesame Street! Edgar Hendricks works with just congas, bass, and piano on most tracks – this very cool, open approach that really demands a lot from his vocals – which rise to the occasion, and provide all these powerful, positive inflections on lyrics that most other singers would have just taken in a much straighter way! The result is very cool, and very special – like Bill Withers recording a special for the Children's Television Workshop in the 70s – with titles that include "The Bee & The Boy", "A Good Education Will Help You Through Life", "Song Of The Alphabets", "Let's Play A Circle Game", "Counting From One To Ten", and "Message To All Young People". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Gil Scott-HeronFree Will (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99 24.99
A really tremendous album from the legendary Gil Scott-Heron – and a set that stands as one of his greatest statements from the 70s! The record is a wonderful example of Gil's work in two different styles – sweet mellow jazzy soul, and harder heavier protest poetry – the latter from his roots as a writer in touch with the streets, and the former part of a brilliant new direction that he was taking on the Flying Dutchman label. Side one features classic jazzy tracks recorded with Brian Jackson – like "Free Will", "The Middle Of Your Days", "Speed Kills", and "Did You Hear What They Said?". Side two moves over to a much sparer sound – and has Gil reciting some of his poetry with very heavy percussion, and a very righteous approach. The wisdom and knowledge of those pieces is a perfect example of the kinds of issues that were haunting black America in the early 70s – especially on the tracks "No Knock", "The King Alfred Plan", and "Sex Education: Ghetto Style".
