✨✧ Steve Reich/Kronos Quartet/Pat MethenyDifferent Trains ... CD
Nonesuch, 1989. Used ... $5.99
A pivotal album from minimalist genius Steve Reich – a record that got him into living rooms across America – thanks to the album's higher concept, and key participation of the Kronos Quartet and guitarist Pat Metheny! Kronos perform on the long title track "Different Trains" – a piece that is both a meditation on train travel and its role in the Holocaust – performed by the quartet with additional sounds from Reich on tape! Metheny's guitar sounds fantastic on "Electric Counterpoint" – a work that's completely faithful to the amazing range of tones and colors he'd been bringing to his own albums for years, but which also reworks things with Reich's minimal modes. ✨✧ Steve ReichBerkeley University Museum – November 7, 1970 ... LP
Modern Silence, 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Steve Reich at the earliest point in his career – a time when the budding minimalist was really starting to make some waves on the new music scene with his instrumental compositions, but also still working with a few tape experiments too! This live performance from 1970 shows both sides of Reich's genius – as it begins with an excellent take on his "Four Organs", a piece that still continues to amaze us for its rhythmic shifts all these many years later – then moves into a haunting tape piece titled "My Name Is", which is right up there with his other early tape compositions. That's followed by a beautifully lyrical take on "Piano Phase", and the set's completed by the percolating organ lines of "Phase Patterns". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Steve ReichDrumming ... CD
Deutsche Grammophon (Germany), 1974. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Landmark music from Steve Reich – a set that takes his previous experiments in minimalism and phase shifting, and moves them into a highly percussive mode! The rhythms here become melodies – the sorts that you'd hear on other Reich keyboard albums, but played live with incredible dexterity – as each player puts together their passage in ways that interlocks with the other – than slowly moves in space over time – and letting in marimba, voice, piccolo, and glockenspiel to the mix as well. The shift over time is amazing – something that so many others have copied over the years, but never done this well again! CD

✨✧ Steve Reich/Terry RileySix Pianos/Keyboard Study #1 ... CD
Film (Germany), 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic recording of two minimalist classics – each done here in an unique sort of way! The reading of Steve Reich's "Six Pianos" features six different artists on the instrument – but each recorded by themselves, away from the others, using their own piano – which is quite different from any sort of unified group recording of the work! The differing spaces and types of instrument maybe makes for more of a sense of individual "voice" to the performance than some others – yet the whole work still adhere's brilliantly to Reich's compositional ideas – especially his idea of phase shift over time! And on that note, the version of Terry Riley's "Keyboard Study #1" is wonderful too – featuring acoustic piano from Gregor Schwellenbach (who produced the record) – plus delays imposed on the performance by Lukas Vogel, whose almost working a Steve Reich tape trick into the more organic compositional ideals of Riley! ✨✧ Steve ReichDrumming ... CD
Nonesuch/Elektra (Germany), 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great recording of Steve Reich's seminal composition "Drumming" – an amazing blend of minimal percussion snatches, coming together to form a lyrical repetitive work of great beauty! Reich heads up the recording himself – working here with 9 percussionists, 2 vocalists, a piccolo, and even a bit of whistling – all to create an extremely haunting sound that's still one of the best illustrations of minimalist at its height! The sound is incredible – a slow-shifting phase of sound from the percussion players – first conceived by Reich right around the time he was moving to work on keyboards from his tape projects – but, as a percussive performance, far more difficult to handle – especially given the extended time of the piece. An amazing record from Meredith Monk – one that completely defies description – and which puts her right up there in the highest company of important contemporaries like Philip Glass or Steve Reich! ✨✧ MoondogMoondog – The Viking Of Sixth Avenue ... CD
Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A long-overdue tribute to the legendary Moondog – one of the true visionaries of American music in the 20th Century! Moondog got his starts as a blind musician working the streets of New York at the end of the 40s, but he did so (as you'll note on the cover photo) with a range of unusual instruments of his own invention, and in a minimal, rhythmic style that linked together primitivism with higher musical ideals. Moondog's often been called "the father of minimalism" – and while his experiments of the 50s prefaced the work of Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and others, his work was also much more personal, and had an earthy intensity that's still tremendously powerful even decades later! This collection is one of the first to dip into the earliest of Moondog's recordings – his recordings for the Mars, SRC, Brunswick, and Moondog labels – which are presented here alongside selected tracks from his albums for Epic and Prestige, also of similar vintage. Nearly all the tracks here offer a very primitive blend of percussion that's sometimes mixed with unusual woodwind or stringed instruments – nearly all of Moondog's own invention – and the package also features some great notes on his long career, plus some photos that are as gripping as the music itself! Titles include "Down Is Up", "Big Cat", "Bumbo", "Rimshot", "Rabbit Hop", "Instrumental Round", "Be A Hobo", "Dog Trot", "Oasis", "2 W 46th Street", and "Why Spend The Dark Night With You". CD

✨✧ John FaheyProofs & Refutations ... LP
Drag City, Mid 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Very dark sounds from John Fahey's later years – music that was likely recorded in the boardinghouse where he was spending his time, and done with a much moodier vibe than most of his earlier music! The set begins with a layered vocal number that's extremely foreboding – layered vocals that are almost a looser take on some sort of early Steve Reich territory – balanced by acoustic guitar instrumentals that are in that looser, more open later Fahey mode as well. There's a bit of electronics on the set at points, plenty of those 90s Fahey surprises along the way – and the whole thing was edited and mastered by Jim O'Rourke. Titles include "All The Rains", "F For Fake", "Untitled", "Evening Not Night", and "For LMC 2". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Julius EastmanFemenine ... LP
Frozen Reeds, 1974. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic piece of minimalist magic from Julius Eastman – a lesser-known composer of the 70s, but one we'd rank right up there with Steve Reich, given the beauty of this work! The CD features one long piece – "Femenine" – which builds slowly out of small passages of music, repeated on piano, vibes, woodwinds, and light strings – all at a level that reminds us of Reich's Music For 18 Musicians, but predates that work by a number of years! As with that composition, there's a stunning amount of lightness and color in the music – these beautiful bursts of tone and life that come through as the music folds into and over itself – and the vibes are especially beautiful, and really give the work a lot of character. ✨✧ Erik HallCanto Ostinato – Simeon Ten Holt ... LP
Western Vinyl, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Erik Hall gave us an amazing reworking of a piece by Steve Reich on a previous record – and here, he does maybe an even more incredible job on the long "Canto Ostinato" composition by Simeon Ten Holt! The original work was originally penned for four pianos – in a 70s minimalist style that's similar to Reich – but Hall handles the whole thing solo, yet with overdubs – using grand piano, organ, and electric piano in these flowing waves of sound – beautifully shifting over time, and often flowering into new sonic dimensions as the instrumentation makes a gentle step at key moments! Piano/Superior Viaduct, 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most unusual albums from the 70s minimalist scene – a set that features different tracks with cyclical passages of instruments layered over one another – but with a vibe that's sometimes a bit more chaotic than similar work by artists like Terry Riley or Steve Reich! That quality is intentional, clearly, and the proceedings veer into noisier territory at times – with instrumentation played by the composer on most tracks, with help from a few other percussionists at points – in a shifting lineup that includes lots of glockenspiel, plus bass, piano, violin piano, percussion, electronics, guitar, and other instruments too. WeJazz (Finland), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The cover's got a very modern look, and the group have a very modern sound – a reworking of the older piano trio mode with a very rhythmic pulse to their music throughout! The trio features Joachim Florent on bass, Will Guthrie on drums, and Aki Rissanen on piano – and the instruments work together in this pulsating, cyclical style – part jazz performance, but also part Steve Reich – which makes for incredibly captivating music throughout! The bass is very important to the sound, especially in the way it carves out the tunes almost as blocks of sound – which build and build in really magical ways. Titles include "Lebanon", "Procession", "Folk Song", "Engrenages", "Moulindjek", and "White Keys". CD

✨✧ Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandToshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band Live At Newport Vol 1 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic live performance from this legendary ensemble – and a record that brings a nice sort of edge to the group's already great sound! It's a bit hard to describe – but somehow the live recording quality seems to create more intensity, maybe more urgency to the way the group emotionally communicates – maybe partly just the echo and open space of the recording, but also maybe the way the group seems to open up with a fresh on-the-spot energy. In addition to Toshiko Akiyoshi on piano and Lew Tabackin on reeds, the lineup features saxes from Beverly Darke, Dick Spencer, Gary Foster, and Gary Herbig; trombones from Bill Reichenbach, Charlie Loper, Phil Teele, and Rick Culver; and trumpets from Bobby Shew, Mike Price, Richard Cooper, and Steven Huffstetter. Titles include the always-great "Warning Success May Be Hazardous To Your Health" – plus "Road Time Shuffle", "March Of The Tadpoles", and "Strive For Jive". CD
