Chuck Berry & The Steve Miller BandLive At The Fillmore Auditorium ... LP
Mercury, 1967. Very Good+ ... $19.99
The cover's a bit trippy, but the sound is anything but – and instead stands as a strong tribute to the way the early work of Chuck Berry continued to influence a generation of rockers well through the 60s! Berry's the frontman, and gets plenty of chance to sing and sear on guitar – and the backing band is actually the combo of a young Steve Miller – soon to explode in fame of his own, but here very respectful to Chuck! Wally Heider recorded the set – and it's definitely one of the headier Chuck Berry moments of the 60s – but mostly because the live setting allows things to get a bit looser, and even grittier. Miller plays guitar, and Jim Peterman turns in lots of great work on organ and electric piano – and titles include "Flying Home", "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl", "CC Rider", "Feelin It", "Wee Baby Blues", "Hoochie Coochie Man", and "Driftin Blues". ✨✧ Steve Miller BandFly Like An Eagle ... LP
Capitol, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 29.99
A masterpiece from the legendary SF rocker Steve Miller – and a perfect summation of the years of blues, soul, funk, and rock he'd been soaking up in the Bay Area scene – served up here with an edge that's still very firmly in place! Miller was already plenty great before this set, but somehow the record really pushes Steve into perfection territory he'd never hit before – able to cross over big with a few key tracks, but still have this sharpness in his guitar work and sense of charm that never seem to die! The album crossed over instantly with the massive cut "Fly Like An Eagle" – already great on its own, but supported here with the massive "Space Intro", which adds an extra minute of cool electronics to the tune – and other great cuts include the amazing funky rocker "Take The Money & Run", which has a break that never gets old – plus the hit "Rock N Me", and the cuts "The Window", "Wild Mountain Honey", "Sweet Maree", "Blue Odyssey", "Mercury Blues", and "Dance Dance Dance". Capitol, Mid 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
What can we say? The man's a genius! Steve managed to shake off his roots in the SF scene a lot better than most of his contemporaries – and he grew considerably during the mid 70s, picking up a heck of a lot of soul along the way, and earning some very well-deserved crossover spots on the charts. Includes the steppers and sample classic "Fly Like An Eagle", plus "Jet Airliner", "The Joker", "Jungle Love", "Take The Money & Run", and "The Stake". CD

Number five, and the Steve Miller Band is still going strong – working here with some great help from Area Code 615, who bring a slightly rootsy vibe to the set! That core Miller brilliance is still very firmly in place – and Steve's got an even sharper ear for writing songs this time around – working in more influences than before, and really finding his voice – or more appropriately, that great way his vocals can be filtered in with the production. Other guests include Ben Sidran and Nicky Hopkins – helping to reinstate the keyboard sound in the group – and titles include "Steve Miller's Midnight Tango", "Industrial Military Complex Hex", "Never Kill Another Man", "Going To The Country", and "Hot Chili". ✨✧ Steve Miller BandRock Love ... LP
Capitol, 1971. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A really cool little album from the mighty Steve Miller – a set that's half live, half studio, and fully in possession of all Miller's mighty charms! The guitar is fantastic – and really stretches out on some of the longer tracks – but as always with Steve, he's never slavish to his blues-inspired roots – as he always pulls something new out of his bag, and manages to charm the songs tremendously with that great vocal approach of his! It's that quality that's the real Miller magic – that style that helped really push Steve and a rare few of his scene past the cliches of the blues rock scene a few years before – embracing the future while still revering the past, to make music as fantastic as this! Live tracks include "Love Shock", "Blues Without Blame", and "The Gangster Is Back" – and studio numbers are "Rock Love", "Harbor Lights", "Deliverance", and "Let Me Serve You". ✨✧ Steve Miller BandSailor ... CD
Capitol, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
A classic set that really helps put the Steve Miller sound on the map – a wonderful blend of tightness and easygoing energy that makes the group one of the greatest things going from San Francisco at the time! Some tunes have this burning quality that's completely sublime – while others still preserve some of the looser jamming energy that spawned the group – those heady waves of sound that Miller and Scaggs really helped filter down for a whole new generation! Titles include the brilliant "Living In The USA", plus "Song For Our Ancestors", "Dear Mary", "Quicksilver Girl", "Gangster Of Love", and "Overdrive". CD

✨✧ Steve Miller BandYour Saving Grace ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The Steve Miller Band is firmly down to a trio here – and they've never sounded better – thanks to completely kickass drums from Tim Davis, and some heavy heavy bass from Lonnie Turner – both of whom work with Miller in a style that's almost an American answer to the music of Cream from the UK! The vocals have this great way of laying down amidst the guitar, bass, and drums – and although rooted in blues, the music is so much more – especially since it's got an unbridled energy that always has the best tunes really taking off. Titles include "Baby's House", "Motherless Children", "Last Wombat In Mecca", "Your Saving Grace", "Just A Passin Fancy", and "Feel So Glad". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Steve Miller BandBrave New World ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant standout in a late 60s world of blues rock – a set that goes way beyond what most of Steve Miller's contemporaries were doing at the time – to find a brave new world that's all its own! As before, the drums are key to the group's sound – harder and funkier than most of their contemporaries – with a propulsive energy that really pushes the group past any sort of sleepy cliches, and allows Miller to grab a whole host of other influences, and manage to forge them into the sound. Tim Davis is the mighty man on the kit – really kicking it throughout – and the group also features work from future jazz singer Ben Sidran on keyboards, and an appearance by Paul McCartney on one track too! Titles include "Space Cowboy", "Got Love Cause You Need It", "Celebration Song", "In My Dark Hour", "Kow Kow", and "Brave New World". LP, Vinyl record album

The first moment of genius from the Steve Miller Band – a killer debut that also features a young Boz Scaggs as a key member of the group! Steve's the core star here, though – setting things up in this amazing blend of psych, blues, and hard rock – one that's easily a lot more ballsy than most of his Bay Area contemporaries at the time – really taking off on some propulsive rhythms, razor-sharp guitar, and cooking keyboards! Scaggs' vocal help is mighty nice – and titles include "You've Got The Power", "Pushed Me To It", "Junior Saw It Happen", "Baby's Callin Me Home", "Roll With It", and "Key To The Highway". CD

✨✧ Keef Hartley BandBattle Of North West Six ... LP
Deram, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous set from one of the best – and most under-recognized – groups of the British jazz rock scene at the end of the 60s! The group have an approach that mixes heavy blues-influenced jamming with some of the lighter, more lyrical touches that were showing up at the time – in a way that gives them a firmly grounded sound at one level, but also a slightly more sophisticated, contemplative approach – making the group almost a UK equivalent to the sound of the Steve Miller Band at the time. The jazzier tracks on the album feature work by some great straight British players – including Harry Beckett and Ray Warleigh – and the album's also got a few nice slightly funky cuts that are known for their breaks! Tracks include "The Dansette Kid", "Hickory", "Not Foolish, Not Wise", "Poor Mabel", "Believe In Me", "Don't Give Up", "Hickory", and "Tadpole". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Boz ScaggsBoz Scaggs ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first-ever solo set from the great Boz Scaggs – done after a few key early performances with The Steve Miller Band – and with a style that's even more soulful than some of Scaggs' later work! The style is unabashedly soul-based – as the set was recorded at Muscle Shoals, with Duane Allman on dobro and Eddie Hinton on guitar – in a mode that's more Stax Records than the smoother groove of any of Boz's bigger hits of the 70s – even though those are pretty darn great too! The shift from Bay Area to southern soul is a great one for the singer – who really shines on titles that include "Waiting For A Train", "Loan Me A Dime", "I'm Easy", "I'll Be Long Gone", and "Now You're Gone". ✨✧ Cat Mother & The All Night News BoysStreet Giveth & The Street Taketh Away ... LP
Polydor, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A legendary batch of funky rock tracks – noteworthy not only for production by Jimi Hendrix, but also for the group's insanely great groove! There's a bluesy undercurrent here, but sharpened much more strongly for the funk generation – which takes Cat Mother way past contemporaries like Canned Heat or The Steve Miller Band – yet also still has the gritty power of both of those groups. Jimi's production is surprisingly great – fused tightly at times, in ways that almost preface some modes that bigger acts would take rootsy sounds in the 70s, but much more revolutionary here. The set's worth it alone for the trippy instrumental jam "Track In A", and other tracks include "Can You Dance To It", "Marie", "How I Spent My Summer", "Bramble Bush", "Boston Burglar", and "Favors". Elemental, 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic gift from the gods – a lost live performance from one of our favorite trumpeters of all-time – and a set that has him really stretching out in all of his genius! Woody Shaw is really at the peak here – working in that soaring, spiritual mode that he virtually helped invent during the 70s – and which he carried with a strong torch still burning way into the 80s, at a time when some of his contemporaries had maybe lost their path a bit. Here, Woody soars to the skies on waves of soul – working with a wonderful group that includes Steve Turre on trombone, Mulgrew Miller on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Tony Reedus on drums – all players that really seem to be their best when working with Shaw! The rich basslines of James are always a key part of some of our favorite records by Woody, and they're equally great here – on titles that include "Rosewood", "Apex", "From Moment To Moment", "Theme For Maxine", and "Song Of Songs". Also features a bonus track – "Sweet Love Of Mine" – recorded in 1985 by the Paris Reunion Band. CD

✨✧ Wilmer & The DukesWilmer & The Dukes ... LP
Aphrodisiac, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An excellent lost soul group – with a mix of funk and garage rock that was pretty unique, and which calls to mind some of the mixed-race combos that were playing around the showband scene in the south during the late 60s. The strong-voiced soul singer Wilmer fronts the more rocking Dukes – and the mix is a strong one for the hard grooving soul party crowd, heard most famously in the band's classic version of "Get Out Of My Life, Woman", complete with an excellent tasty drumbreak! Other great tracks include the instrumental "Get It", a version of The Stones' "I'm Free", Billy Stewart's "I Do Love You", and the band's own "Give Me One More Chance". Also includes a version of Steve Miller's excellent "Living In The USA", one of those numbers that's a lot more funky than anyone gives it credit for! LP, Vinyl record album
