Steve Martin at the height of his powers – when he was hitting on all burners with his TV specials, nightclub appearances, and radio airplay. Martin PopoffTime & A Word – The Yes Story ... Book
Sound Check (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $5.99 21.95
Maybe not the most exhaustive book on prog genius supergroup Yes – but a volume that does a great job of tracing the evolutions that led to their groundbreaking music at the end of the 60s, and all the many changes it went through in years to come! Author Martin Popoff sets the whole thing up as a timeline – peppered with quotes from long interviews with Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, and Chris Squire – then structured with some of his own comments as well – all to provide an overview of the group's career, while also letting some of its individual members offer up their specific viewpoints too. 206 pages, softcover, with some images. ✨✧ EPMDStrictly Business ... CD
Priority, 1988. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
EPMD's incredible full length debut – a straight up all caps CLASSIC late 80s effort – raising the bar for the genre and helping pave the way for so much of the best golden age hip hop to come! Bottom heavy funky soul beats and masterful use of samples anchor the production, and the rhyme style is benchmark, too, a measured approach to the vocals that stood out at the time for it's slow flowing style and fresh to this day. A cool, confident hip hop masterpiece, and titles include "It's My Thing", "You Gots To Chill", "Strictly Business", "You're A Customer", "Get Off The Bandwagon", "I'm Housin'", "So Let The Funk Flow", "The Steve Martin", "DJ K La Boss" and "Jane". ✨✧ Christian McBride & Inside StraightLive At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Bassist Christian McBride's always got a great ear for the players he chooses to work with – and that's definitely the case here, as the group features the great Warren Wolf on vibes and reedman Steve Wilson on both alto and soprano sax! Wilson and Wolf have this great way of balancing each other out – the sometimes-sharp edges of Steve's saxophones, and the inherent warmth of Warren's vibes – dancing together joyfully and really opening up the sound, in the company of other players who include Peter Martin on piano and Carl Allen on drums. As always, McBride proves to be a really special sort of bassist-as-leader – and titles include "Ms Angelou", "The Shade Of The Cedar Tree", "Fair Hope Theme", and "Gang Gang" – all nice and long! Steven BlushNew York Rock – From The Rise Of The Velvet Underground To The Fall Of CBGB ... Book
St Martins, 2016. New Copy ... $7.99 34.99
That's quite a cover photo on the book – and the interweaving of key talents in the image really gets at the style of the narrative within! Author Steven Blush delivers a decidedly one-sided document of the New York scene from the late 60s onward – a picture of countless creative musicians, working alongside each other to create sounds that would go onto transform a generation – often in ways that were strongly inspired by the city itself. The book is less of a long story, than a history that encapsulates moments, focuses on figures – and even lays out groups in some index-styled passages – showing their strengths and weaknesses, and often augmenting the text with countless comments from singers and musicians who were part of the scene. In a manner similar to other rock books in recent years, Blush allows plenty of space for other folks' voices – sometimes almost making the whole thing feel like an oral history of the New York scene, but one that's directed by his own choices and sense of structure. The softcover book is almost 500 pages long, and has a fair bit of black and white photos too. Book
(Spine has a small remainder mark.)

Capitol, 1950s/1960s. Used ... $6.99
A very cool little package – filled with excellent loungey tunes pulled from Capitol's Ultra Lounge series! The cover alone is worth the price of admission – faux leopard fur, topped off with a shiny embossed Ultra-Lounge logo – but inside, the CD features 24 very groovy tunes, mostly late 50s and early 60s numbers, recorded in the glory days of mood music and bachelor pad albums! Titles include "Teach Me Tiger" by April Stevens, "Tanya" by Plas Johnson, "Swamp Fire" by Martin Denny, "Cha Cha Cha D'Amour" by Dean Martin, "So Nice" by Billy May, "More" by Bobby Darin, "Route 66" by Nelson Riddle, and "Lonesome Road" by Dean Elliott. ✨✧ Bill O'ConnellChange Is Gonna Come ... CD
Savant, 2022. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pianist Bill O'Connell keeps it nice and lean here – working in a core quartet that moves its instrumentation around, but always in ways that maybe bring more of an edge to the record than some of O'Connell's previous records – yet all without losing the soulful charms that make him so great! Bill himself plays acoustic piano, but switches to Fender Rhodes on two cuts – a theme that's followed as Craig Handy plays soprano sax on three, and tenor on two more – while bassist Lincoln Goines shifts between acoustic and electric basses. Steve Jordan handles drums, and Pedrito Martinez adds percussion on a few tracks – exploring some of the Latin currents that Bill sometimes adds to his records – on titles that include "Moment's Notice", "Sun For Sonny", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "A Prayer For Us", "Sweet Peanut", "Enough Is Enough", and "Chaos". ✨✧ Erroll GarnerClose Up In Swing/New Kind Of Love ... CD
Telarc, 1961/1963. Used ... $2.99
Two Erroll Garner albums – back to back on a single CD! First up is the obscure ABC album Close Up In Swing – Erroll Garner at the start of the 60s – but still sounding wonderfully unique, and coming across with a timeless vibe that makes the record every bit as great as his classics from the 50s! The format is simple – just Garner on piano, with Eddie Calhoun on bass and Kelly Martin on drums – but the sound is sublime, and in that special Garner-like approach that nobody else could match – very rhythmic, with a gritty pulse at the core – yet topped with these explosive lines on the keys that all make complete sense – not showoffy pyrotechnics, but sublime lyrical lines that never fail to blow us away. Titles include "All Of Me", "No More Shadows", "You Do Something To Me", "The Best Things In Life Are Free", and "El Papa Grande" – a nice number with a bit of a Latin pulse! New Kind Of Love is a really unusual album from piano giant Erroll Garner – a jazz album at the core, but one that was also used as the soundtrack for an obscure Paul Newman film of the 60s! We always love Erroll Garner in a fuller setting – something that's not always easy to find on record – and this album features his piano in the lead, over the top of some great backings from Leith Stevens – known best for his jazz soundtracks of the 50s! Stevens' provides a light bank of strings and woodwinds as support for Garner – and some of the best tunes here have a slight bossa undercurrent – quite sparkling, and very nice overall. Titles include "The Tease", "Mimi", "Paris Mist", "Fashion Interlude", "Louise", and "Theme From A New Kind Of Love". CD

VariousState Of The Union – The American Dream 1967 to 1973 – Presented By Bob Stanley & Pete Wiggs ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.98
A great look at the changing tone on the American scene at the end of the 60s – that moment when Vietnam, social unrest, and many other problems weighed heavily on the country's consciousness – and made their presence manifest in all sorts of pop music as well! We're not talking about the familiar sounds of the Woodstock generation – but instead more mainstream artists who had never touched on politics or social issues before – but suddenly found themselves singing alongside the underground about the bigger problems of the day. This package is a superb look at that moment – put together by the team who've given us the great English Weather and Paris In The Spring collections for Ace – with the same care for choice of tracks, and a wealth of wonderful notes that really get at the nature of these unusual tunes. Titles include "Clean Up Your Own Back Yard" by Elvis Presley, "Wine In The Wind" by Anita Kerr Singers, "Paint Me Black Angels" by Eartha Kitt, "This Crazy World" by Paul Anka, "Questions" by Bobby Darin, "Do You Believe This Town" by Dean Martin, "Cardboard California" by Buddy Greco, "Cherrystones" by Eugene McDaniels, "Save The Children" by Teresa Brewer, "Welfare Hero" by Johnny Tillotson, "What Do We Do With The World" by Bing Crosby, "4th Of July" by The Beach Boys, "Mr Businessman" by Ray Stevens, "Paint America Love" by Lou Christie, "Hitchhiker" by The Four Preps, "Brand New Day" by Della Reese, "Saturday's Father" by The 4 Seasons, and "Southbound Jericho Parkway" by Roy Orbison. ✨✧ Mongo SantamariaSofrito (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vaya/Craft, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Mongo Santamaria albums of the 70s – and that's saying a lot, given that Mongo created so many wonderful records over the years! This set is from a brief moment in which Santamaria picked up a bit of electricity – and the set has some great keyboard lines from Armen Donelian – whose electric piano is worth the price of admission alone, and set up in a mix of Latin and jazz funk styles with help from Al Williams on tenor and soprano, Roger Rosenberg on soprano and alto, and Mike DiMartino on trumpet! Soul singer Edna Holt makes a surprising vocal appearance on one track – and Steve Berrios plays lots of great percussion alongside Mongo's lead work on congas. Wonderful throughout – and titles include "Five On The Color Side", "Iberia", "Cruzan", "Spring Song", and "O Mi Shango". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eden AhbezEden's Island & Beyond ... CD
Jasmine (UK), 1960. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful collection – one that features the legendary album by Eden Ahbez, plus other tracks that show his influence on postwar music! First up is the core Eden's Island set – an incredibly evocative record – one of the strangest of its kind, and an audio treasure that we've loved for years! Eden Ahbez first came into public prominence as the man who wrote "Nature Boy" for Nat King Cole – a dark, moody tune that was as mysterious and earthy as the man who wrote it! This album was recorded nearly a decade after Cole's original hit, and features Ahbez almost in Moondog-like territory – working in an amazing setting of odd instruments and exotic percussion – but also singing in this almost spiritualist kind of way! The record's got plenty of ties to the exotica scene of the late 50s – but also stand out from the pack with a mad vision that's all its own – a strange intersection of lines that one might draw between Moondog, Martin Denny, and Anton La Vey! Tracks include "The Wanderer", "Eden's Island", "Tradewind", "Full Moon", "Mongoose", "Market Place", "The Old Boat", "Island Girl" and "La Mar". CD then features 16 more bonus tracks – all compositions by Eden and work that shows others taking up his helm – titles that include "Palm Springs" by Ray Anthony, "Wine Women & Gold" by The Carsons, "Hey Jacque" by Eartha Kitt, "Frankie's Song" by Anita Ray, "Let Me Hear You Say I Love You" by Vicki Young, "End Of Desire" by April Stevens, "Sahara" by Bob Romeo & The Jungle Sextet, and "Song Of The Fool" by The Crew Cuts.
