Em's fourth album hits many of the same notes as its predecessor, signaling a bit of a comfort zone for the former Slim Shady. The beats largely fall on the darker-toned lilt of the now instantly identifiable sound. Tracks include "Just Lose It", "Mosh", "Evil Deeds", "Never Enough" with Nate Dogg & 50 Cent, "Yellow Brick Road", "Like Toy Soldiers", "Puke", "My 1st Single", "Big Weenie", "Ass Like That", "Spend Some Time" with Obie Trice, Stat Quo & 50, "Mockingbird", "One Shot 2 Shot" with D-12 and "Encore" featuring Dr. Dre & 50 Cent. VariousPatterns On The Window – The British Progressive Pop Sounds Of 1974 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), 1974. New Copy 3CD ... $27.99 38.99
Great work from a pivotal year in modern music – a time when some of the experiments of the early prog generation were working their way into shorter, catchier work – not entirely the kind of pop that American audiences were digging on the radio in 1974, but instead some forward-thinking music that would set the tone for years to come! There's a smartness and sophistication to most of these tracks, but also a down to earth quality that makes them easy go get into too – music that came out right before the punk and disco years, but which has gone on to provide endless appeal to listeners in much later generations too. As with Grapefruit sets, the track list is superb – with a great blend of familiar and lesser-known acts, all supported with detailed notes that really help you get into the music. 67 tracks in all – a few unreleased – with music from Ron Wood, Georgie Fame, Hello, Fancy, Unicorn, Bryan Ferry, Sparks, Status Quo, John Cale, Tramp, Snafu, Bebop Deluxe, Roxy Music, Man, Fox, Holy Mackerel, Carmen, Stackridge, Farm, Dave Cousins, Slade, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Billy Kinsley, and many others! VariousTo Love Somebody – The Songs Of The Bee Gees 1966 to 1970 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 19.99
Right from the start, the brothers Gibb were recognized as some of the most striking songwriters of their generation – a fact that's sometimes lost, due to the trio's later disco fame in the spotlight – which obscures their huge impact as songwriters from the early years! This set finally does justice to that legacy – and not only includes the rock and pop covers you might expect, but also a fair bit of soul tracks too – showing a remarkable appeal that the Bee Gees had early on for a soul audience – an influence that began long before the days in which they helped bring disco to the mainstream. There's some really wonderful tunes here – maybe less hits overall than in the usual Ace Records "songwriter" series – and the set features 24 tracks that include "To Love Somebody" by James Carr, "I've Gotta Get A Message To You" by Percy Sledge, "I Can't See Nobody" by Nina Simone, "Give A Hand Take A Hand" by The Staple Singers, "World" by Sharon Tandy, "Massachusetts" by Tommy Roe, "I Started A Joke" by Pat Kelly, "Spicks & Specks" by The Status Quo, "And The Sun Will Shine" by Paul Jones, "He's A Thief" by April Byron, "Town Of Tuxley Toymaker (part 1)" by Jon, "Morning Of My Life" by John Holt, "First Of May" by Jose Feliciano, "Words" by Bettye Swann, and "New York Mining Disaster 1941" by Velvett Fogg. ✨✧ Black FlagDamaged ... LP
Unicorn/SST, 1981. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An unmitigated blast of punk, worthy of setting the stage for the American hard core movement! While punk rock had been firmly established by the time this album came out, no one was prepared for the next level that Black Flag would take things to with this brutal, nihilistic, stripped down assault on the status quo! A classic that will stand up for ages, wit fist in the air anthems like "Rise Above", "Six Pack", "What I See", "TV Party", "Police Story", "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie", "Thirsty & Miserable", "Depression", "Padded Cell", "Damaged I", "Damaged II", "Life Of Pain", "Room 103" and "No More". ✨✧ Clifford Jordan & John GilmoreBlowing In From Chicago (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1957. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark session that features two of the greatest tenor talents to emerge from the rich Chicago scene of the 50s – both working head to head here in a fantastic early showcase for Blue Note! The set's less of the "blowing session" promised in the title – at least in comparison to some of those dates on Prestige Records at the time – and although Clifford Jordan was already a rising star, getting attention on the east coast – the album's maybe even more noteworthy for the presence of John Gilmore – making a rare appearance here away from the Sun Ra Arkestra, where he spent most of his career! Both players are wonderful – and the album features the duo in a twin-tenor frontline, with backing by Horace Silver on piano, Curley Russell on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – a perfect Blue Note rhythm trio, who really send the whole thing home. Titles include "Evil Eye", "Status Quo", "Bo-Till", and "Blue Lights". CD features the bonus track "Let It Stand". CD

The massive second album by PE – and the one where where the hit their full creative stride, and their politics and philosphy hit at full force – moving Public Enemy from an imposing threat to both the hip hop and pop music status quo to a straight up cultural phenomenon! There's little we can add to canon of critical regard this unimpeachable classic – just know that it's as essential as any hip hop album of the era. Includes "Bring The Noise", "Don't Believe The Hype", "Prophets Of Rage" and "Rebel Without A Pause", "Cold Lampin With Flavor", "Terminator X To The Edge Of Panic", "Louder Than A Bomb", "Caught, Can We Get A Witness", "She Watch Channel Zero", "Night Of The Living Baseheads", "Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos", "Prophets For Right To Fight" and more. ✨✧ Johnny Griffin, John Coltrane, Clifford Jordan, John Gilmore, & Hank MobleyBlowin Sessions (Blowing Session/Blowing In From Chicago) ... LP
Blue Note, Late 50s/1975. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Two of the hardest hardbop albums ever recorded for Blue Note – back to back in a single set! The first record is Blowin Session (aka Johnny Griffin Vol 2) – a stellar early Johnny Griffin recording for Blue Note, and one that features the young tenor genius from Chicago working alongside the equally fantastic John Coltrane and Hank Mobley – plus some additional trumpet from Lee Morgan, and rock-solid rhythm from Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey! As the "blowing session" title might imply, this set features long tracks that let the players get in plenty of soloing (and, we might add, in a very competitive way!) The record is similar to the Prestige sessions of the same vintage and style, but recorded with a little bit more of the care and rehearsal that Blue Note provided. Cuts include "Ball Bearing", "All The Things You Are", and "Smoke Stack. The second album is the legendary Blowing In From Chicago – landmark session that features two of the greatest tenor talents to emerge from the rich Chicago scene of the 50s – John Gilmore and Clifford Jordan! Jordan was well-known to jazz fans, or would be within a few years – but Gilmore's rarely heard in this sort of setting, as most of his recording career was spent in the company of Sun Ra's Arkestra. The record features the duo in a twin-tenor frontline, with backing by Horace Silver, Curly Russell, and Art Blakey. Ostensibly a blowing session, but much tighter than you'd expect – and with a hard heavy Blue Note groove. Titles include "Evil Eye", "Status Quo", "Bo-Till", and "Blue Lights". ✨✧ World Of OzWorld Of Oz ... LP
Deram, 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Beautifully baroque work from The World Of Oz – a group who share some of the dreamy vocal stylings of the Bee Gees at the time, but who also work here in a fuller sound that benefits from some groovy arrangements from John Cameron and Mike Vickers! The tunes on the set have a lovely sing-song kind of quality – taking a childlike approach to the subject matter, then tripping them out a lot – almost in an early Status Quo sort of mode, but again with more poise and grooviness. And thanks to the Brit Easy backings on the best tracks, there's even some slightly funky touches that groove the album more than you'd expect from the title and cover – making it even more of a treasure to our ears! Titles include "Bring The Ring", "Beside The Fire", "The Hum Gum Man", "With A Little Help", "Willow's Harp", "Like A Tear", and "We've All Seen The Queen". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bobby ColePoint Of View ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 1964/1990s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredible treasure from a lost vocal jazz genius – the little-known Bobby Cole, every bit as great a singer as he was a songwriter, very unusual for the time! Bobby was probably best remembered as the house pianist at Jillys, but at the time of this 1964 recording, he was poised to emerge as a serious vocalist with a rich talent for penning interesting and witty little tunes. The album's got Bobby singing in a style that's halfway between Matt Dennis and Mark Murphy – with the sophisticated talents of both in place, and perhaps a bit of the wit of Bob Dorough or Roy Kral. The original album features Bobby on piano and vocals, with only bass and drums behind him – and the CD features a bonus 6 tracks recorded in more recent years, with larger backings. The core album is completely brilliant – the kind of off-kilter vocal record we die for – and every track's a fresh original by Bobby! Titles include "You Can't Build A Life On A Look", "Heat", "You Could Hear A Pin Drop", "Change Of Scene", "A Perfect Day", "Elegy For Eve", and "Status Quo". CD

✨✧ June ChristyGone For the Day ... LP
Capitol, 1957. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
That's "gone" – as in the way June Christy really sends us – vocals that take us to a place that few other 50s singers could ever hope to reach! June's work here is a masterpiece of melancholic understatement – far less overblown than some of her pop contemporaries, but also filled with feeling in a way that's different from some of the other icy singers of the time. A big part of the album's strength lies with arranger Pete Rugolo – who gives June here some of the same dark corners and modern elements you'd find in her classic Something Cool album – which really hits the right sort of emotion for Christy. Titles include "When The Sun Comes Out", "It's So Peaceful In the Country", "When You Awake", "Lazy Mood", and "Interlude". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Curtis MayfieldThere's No Place Like America Today (turquoise vinyl pressing) ... LP
Curtom/Rhino, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A great album by Curtis Mayfield – filled with some excellent lesser-known gems! There's No Place Like America was Curtis' scathing testament to the State Of The Union – and it's got a hip political tone that's right up there with the best of his early 70s songwriting – perhaps even more so, as the message is a bit subtler than on other albums, and laid out in this stoner mellow funk vein that's very tasty throughout, and which makes for an extremely unified album! The album includes a version of the cut "Hard Times", which was done earlier by Baby Huey, plus "Blue Monday People", "Love To The People", and "When Seasons Change". Also includes the great sweet love song, "So In Love"! LP, Vinyl record album
