StarpointAll Night Long ... CD
PTG (France), 1982. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Starpoint's getting a bit loose and free with their fashions on the cover of this one – but the grooves themselves are tighter than ever! If anything, Starpoint seems to be a lot more confident than before – working in a mode that's completely free from late 70s trends, but which also doesn't fall into the traps of others of their generation – a sound that's electric and funky, yet also plenty darn soulful too. Renee Diggs' vocals are completely great on the album – bringing in a depth that's really appreciated, and giving the group a much more well-rounded sound than so many other all male ensemble funk acts of the time. Ballads and mellower numbers are every bit as great as the groovers too – and titles include "All Night Long", "Get Your Body Up", "Bring Your Sweet Lovin Back", "Show Me", "I Can Give You Love", and "It's You". StarpointKeep On It ... CD
Chocolate City/PTG (France), 1981. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Excellent work from Starpoint – the kind of all-solid album that easily marks them as one of the most soulful groups of the boogie generation! There's a depth here that goes way beyond simple bass-heavy grooves for the dancefloor – a sound that picks a fair bit up from the Earth Wind & Fire groove of the early 70s, and manages to keep some jazzy touches and righteous undercurrents going on – even when the tunes themselves have simpler themes overall. Renee Diggs' lead vocals are especially wonderful – crackling with a warmth that's a nice change from the usual belting club diva mode of the period, and which ties together the rest of the group through the strength of her presence. Rhythms are nicely varied too – with some key ballads sitting nicely next to more uptempo numbers – making for a well-rounded album that's extremely well put together! Titles include "I Just Want To Be Your Lover", "For You", "Keep On It", "We're Into Love", "Starpoint's Here Tonight", and the excellent but too short "Interlude". CD

StarpointRestless/Sensational (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1985/1987. New Copy 2 CDS ... $16.99 24.99
Two later Starpoint albums – back to back in a single set, with bonus tracks too! Restless is great work from Starpoint – one of those groups that always seem to be working a notch or two above most of their 80s contemporaries – and even on this mid-decade set, they're still going strong – bouncing around in upbeat rhythms, catchy hooks, and well-balanced instrumentation. Renee Diggs' vocals still sound great on top of the grooves, and even though the overall sound is moving more towards the charts at the time, Starpoint still keep away from ever getting too commercial. Titles include "Emotions", "Object Of My Desire", "See The Light", "Till The End Of Time", "Don't Take Your Love Away", "Restless", and "What You Been Missing". The second album features Sensational sounds from Starpoint – an overlooked set from 80s, and one that has the group working with contemporary soul maestro Preston Glass! Glass brings in his own approach to beats and keyboards, and helps the group find a style that's got lots of lean bounce, and a style that maybe picks up a bit of the currents that were touching mainstream soul from the world of hip hop – almost a pre-New Jack Swing approach at times. Titles include "He Wants My Body", "DYBO", "Prove It Tonight", "Sensational", "Another Night", "Touch Of Your Love", and "Second Chance". 2CD set features lots of bonus tracks – including "Object Of My Desire (voc 12")", "What You Been Missin (voc male version)", "Object Of My Desire (inst)", "Restless (voc ext rmx)", "Restless (dub)", "He Wants My Body (voc ext rmx)", "Another Night (dub)", "Touch Of Your Love (voc ext rmx)", and "Touch Of Your Love (dub)". Casablanca/PTG (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Lean and grooving funk steeped soul from Starpoint – with more of a lively, Earth-based instrumental groove than some of the more drum machine and synth soaked albums that beamed out of the Starpoint spaceship later on in the 80s! This is their first album on Casablanca – a funky bit of soul with a mixture of male and female vocals, often sung together in ensemble style – a tight mix of uptempo dancefloor ready jams more laidback and ballady numbers. Titles include "Gonna Lift You Up", "I Just Wanna Dance With You", "Get Ready, Get Down", "Girl I'm Up For Your Lovin", "Let Me Love You", and "Never Find A Better Love". CD

What was the deal with slap-bass funk and spaceship themes right as the 80s approached?
