✨✧ Heath BrothersBrothers & Others ... LP
Antilles, 1983. Near Mint- ... $2.99
Warm and wonderful work from the Heath Brothers – and a great little effort from the 80s that still has the group working with plenty of sharp edges! In a way, the record's almost a back to basics effort after the group's work on Columbia – and the set's got an especially strong focus on the work of Jimmy Heath, in a way that makes it sound like some of his best soul jazz sides from the 70s. The core trio of Jimmy Heath on reeds, Percy Heath on bass, and Albert Heath on drums is joined by Stanley Cowell on acoustic and electric piano, and on two numbers in the set, Slide Hampton also plays a bit of trombone. Titles include "Nice People", "Hi Fly", "Islandized", "Longravity", "Sleeves", and "Keep Love Alive". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some ring and edge wear, bent corners, peeled spot from price sticker removal, and some faint stains and small peeled spots in ring-form in front.)

✨✧ Heath BrothersPassing Thru ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the best of the Heath Brothers' post-Strata East albums – and one of the few to capture the spacious sound and hipper undertones that made their first record so great! The style here is certainly more conventional – slightly in that "embrace all jazz tradition" mode that was sometimes popular at the time – but there's still plenty of hip moments here too, including flute and soprano sax work from Jimmy Heath, keyboards from Stanley Cowell, and bits of kalimba too – although used a lot more sparely than before. The record's probably most reminiscent of Heath's best straight work of the time – and titles include "In New York", "A New Blue", "Mellowdrama", "Changes", "Prince Albert", and "Artherdoc Blues". ✨✧ Heath BrothersHeath Brothers – Paris 76 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sam Records (France), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A never-issued live performance by the legendary Heath Brothers – and a set that's got the same freewheeling spiritual jazz vibe as their classic album on Strata East! The group's a quartet here, with excellent piano work from Stanley Cowell – who also plays mbira, and might also account for the more open, spacious, spiritual quality of the record – although the Heath Brothers clearly bring a lot to the table too! Jimmy Heath is superb on tenor, soprano, and flute – blowing soulful solos that are as great as on his own 70s albums as a leader – and Albert Tootie Heath mixes in some flute work next to his drums and percussion. Percy plays a bit of baby bass next to his fuller, rounder acoustic – and titles include a great long reading of their classic "Smilin Billy" – plus "One For Juan" and "Watergate Blues". ✨✧ Stanley ClarkeTime Exposure (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/FTG, 1984. Used ... Out Of Stock
A nice funky electric groover from Stanley Clarke's mid 80s R&B years! Time Exposure has a lot of period electro funk in the mix, particularly Clarke's impeccable bass lines, which are heavy throughout! A brilliant mix of 80s fusiony future funk with jazz precision – definitely a funky highlight from this period in Clarke's career – and those bass lines are just unreal! A pretty eclectic roster of guest musicians play on this one, including tenor sax player Ernie Watts, fellow bassist Louis Johnson of Brothers Johnson, singer Howard Hewitt and rock guitar guru Jeff Beck. Titles include "Play The Bass 10", "Are You Ready (For The Future)", "Heaven Sent You", "Time Exposure", "Speedball", "Future Shock", "Spacerunner", "I Know Just How You Feel" and more. This CD version from Funky Town Groves features 5 bonus tracks: "Heaven Sent You (12" Mix)", "Heaven Sent You (7" Mix)", "Speedball (12" Mix)", "Are You Ready (For The Future) (12" Mix)" and 'Future (12" Mix)". Horace ParlanOn The Spur Of The Moment ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1961. New Copy ... $10.99
A darkly-grooving killer from pianist Horace Parlan – and one of our favorite Blue Note albums ever! Although Parlan's always a great player on other sides for the label, this album has him stepping out with an extra edge that's really amazing – working with brothers Tommy and Stanley Turrentine to craft some tunes that roll with the propulsive energy of the best Blue Note hardbop sides, but which also have some edgier moments, and almost point the way towards some of the new thing experiments that would transform the work of Jackie McLean! All players are still quite straight, but they've got a way of putting together tones and textures that's really wonderful – heard to famous effect on the album's early version of Booker Ervin's track "Skoochie" – but soaring all the way through on titles that include "On The Spur Of The Moment", "Ray C", "Al's Tune", and "Pyramid". Max RoachParisian Sketches ... LP
Mercury, 1962. Near Mint- ... $36.99
Sublime work from Max Roach – featuring a group that was one of his greatest! The album was recorded in Paris in the early 60s, and players include the Turrentine BrothersStanley on tenor and Tommy on trumpet – a killer frontline that really gives the album a hell of a lot of soul, especially when you add in Julian Priester on trombone and Bob Boswell on bass! The piano-less ensemble has a fantastic groove – more soul jazz than most of Roach's work, but also with angular touches of modernism that make the album have a very edgey quality – a perfect blending of the two best modes that Max explored in the years after Clifford Brown's death. Stan and Tommy never sounded so great – and titles include "Nica", "Petit Dejuner", "Liberte", and the extended "Parisian Sketches" suite. LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing, with insert – RJ 5002. Back cover has light aging, but front is nice.)

VariousClassic Bluegrass From Smithsonian Folkways ... CD
Smithsonian Folkways, 1950s. Used ... $3.99
OK, we know bluegrass compilations aren't exactly a rarity these days, but this set from Folkways is about as good of one these things as we've seen – and it's from Folkways after all, not some creepy sub-major label exploitation set! In the late 50s Folkways was pretty much the main reservoir for true bluegrass LPs, and this set mines the best of the catalog from the time. The necessary great ones and the label heroes are represented, of course – Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys, the Stanley Brothers, Doc Watson – but like the best similar comps, there are also tons of fine tunes that tend to get lost without a broad cultural trend to stir them up out of the ground. Not just for archivists by any stretch – if a title like Classic Bluegrass From Smithsonian Folkways sounds interesting to your ears you'll love this thing! 25 tracks, including "Little Birdie" and "Rabbit In A Log" by the Stanley Brothers, "Get Up John" by Bill Monroe, "(Legend Of The) Brown Mountain Light" by The Country Gentlemen, "The Train That Carried My Girl From Town" by Doc Watson, ""Wayfaring Stranger" by Cullen Gaylean And The Virginia Mountain Boys", "Teardrops In My Eyes" by The Friendly City Playboys, and tons more. ✨✧ Horace ParlanSpeakin' My Piece ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer set by one of the greatest pianists of the postwar era – and one that features Horace Parlan's piano trading lines with the legendary Turrentine brothers (both Stanley & Tommy), playing here at the height of their powers! Tommy Turrentine's trumpet is especially great here – spurring on Stanley's tenor into a groove that's a lot deeper, and more soulful than usual – a perfect sound in the frontline, kicked up nicely by Horace Parlan's piano! Rhythm is from the team of George Tucker on bass and Al Harewood on drums – very tight and crackling throughout – and the album's easily one of the most cooking Blue Notes from the time. Titles include "Wadin", "Oh So Blue", "Speakin My Piece", "Up In Cynthia's Room", "Rastus", and "Borderline". CD

✨✧ VariousWonderful World Of Depressing Country Music – As Dug By Lux & Ivy & Gram ... CD
Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A collection of classic country that's got way more to offer than the "depressing" in the title might make you think – not tracks that are purposely over the top and full of bad feeling – but instead the kind of well-crafted work that makes postwar country some of the most carefully emotive music of the time! The set's overflowing with themes of love and loss, but handled with a mature, honest, very human approach – never wallowing too much in depression, and instead often coming across with a slightly redemptive spirit in the realization of the loss. The set features 30 tracks in all – and titles include "Letter Edged In Black" by Hank Snow, "Teardrops & Empty Arms" by Texas Ruby, "A Church A Courtroom & Then Goodbye" by Patsy Cline, "Lonely Street" by Don Gibson, "Call Of The Wedding" by Goldie Hill, "There'll Be No Teardrops Tonight by George Jones, "Tramp On The Street" by Carlisle Brothers, "The Old Crossroad Is Waitin" by Rose Maddox, "Lonely Side Of Town" by Kitty Wells, "Are You Afraid To Die" by Stanley Brothers, and "I'm Reading Yaur Letter Again" by Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper. ✨✧ VariousThree Day Week – When The Lights Went Out 1972 to 1975 ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very different picture of the British scene than you might know from the worlds of classic rock and chart hits of the early 70s – as this collection focuses on a really special sort of sound that hints at the bleaker, less satisfying sides of English life – often with a slightly sinister quality that might come as a big surprise! The package is a follow-up to previous gems from compilers Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs – like the compilations English Weather and State Of The Union – and like those, there's a wonderfully unified vision to the whole package – almost a mini-sociology statement, but one that's completely fun – given the fantastic range of music chosen for the album. Tracks are a non-stop surprise all the way through – as glammy bits mix with offbeat pop, catchy prog, and plenty of other tunes that maybe defy any sort of generic description altogether! Titles include "Rod" by Matchbox, "Kill" by Mike McGear, "Part Of The Union" by The Brothers, "The Hertfordshire Rock" by Ricky Wilde, "Sailing" by Sutherland Brothers Band, "And The Fun Goes On" by Lieutenant Pigeon, "War Against War" by Pheon Bear, "Roly Pin" by Roly, "Stardust" by David Essex, "What Ruthy Said" by Cockney Rebel, "Why Am I Waiting" by Robin Goodfellow, "Urban Guerilla" by Hawkwind, "Londonderry" by Phil Cordell, and "Cut Loose" by Stud Leather.
