MomentsMoment With The Moments ... LP
Stang, Early 70s. Very Good ... $19.99
Sweet sweet sweet soul from The Moments, and one of their rare early albums for the Stang label! The tracks are all beautiful New Jersey harmony soul, of the sort that The Moments and others put on the charts in a large way during the early 70s – and the band's smoothing their act up a bit, but still has some of the roughness that makes the best New Jersey soul albums so compelling! Of course, Sylvia Robinson probably had something to do with that – as she was still just hitting her stride in the studio – finding a great way to present the group with all the fragility of their earliest years, but also a bit more punch than usual. Titles include their hit "Love On A Two Way Street", a surprisingly great cover of "Rocky Raccoon", and other nice ones like "So This Is Our Goodbye", "I Do", "Key To My Happiness", and "Lovely Way She Loves". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has some aging, small seam splits, and some heavy wear with splitting in the spine.)

✨✧ WhatnautsIntroducing The Whatnauts ... CD
Stang/P-Vine (Japan), Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from one of our favorite sweet soul groups of all time – the mighty Whatnauts, a quartet who can always break our hearts with their songs! The Whatnauts definitely travel in the same territory as bigger groups of the time – like the Moments or Stylistics – but they've also got some deeper, darker currents too – a bit more of an edge, which comes through here on a few tracks – which also makes the sweetness of others even more powerful. The harmonies are incredible, and the production by George Kerr has this perfect moody vibe – on titles that include "I Just Can't Lose Your Love", "Message From A Black Man", "I'll Erase Away Your Pain", "She's Gone To Another", and the groovy instrumental "Souling With The Whatnauts". ✨✧ Willie & West/New SoundsWillie & West Meet The New Sounds (Willie & West At Their Best/New Sounds/bonus tracks) ... CD
Stang/Outta Sight (UK), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare soul galore – a pair of totally rare albums, plus bonus tracks too! First up is Willie & West At Their Best – a killer of a soul album from the New Jersey underground! This is the same Willie from Willie & The Mighty Magnificents – working here with singer West, who he supposedly started out with. The pair have a style that's a bit like some of the sock-soul duos of the 60s – but they're also willing to let each other take the lead from time to time, singing in a deep soul style that belies their Augusta, Georgia roots! The album's nice and raw – a rare soul gem with a rough and ready heart that keeps it strong over the years. Titles include "Can You Hear The Voices", "The Will", "Beautiful Party", "Deep Down In Your Soul", "You & Me", "Key To My Happiness", and "Watch Yourself". The next album by The New Sounds is some of the deepest soul ever cut by the All Platinum family of labels – done by a vocal group who were contemporaries of The Moments and Whatnauts, but who sang with an even grittier sound overall! There's definitely some sweet New Jersey touches on the set, but some tracks also bring in a bit of a southern soul element too – a nice sense of raspiness on the vocals that's a completely charming combination with the spare instrumentation and rough-edged production! The album's exactly the kind we keep digging rare soul for – and it's a lost treasure from the early 70s east coast group scene – with cuts that include "Don't Take Your Love From Me", "Two Of A Kind", "Sweet Memories", "Having You Around", "Moving", "Tell Me Your Name", and "Just As I Am". CD also features 2 bonus tracks from Willie & West – "Attica Massacre" and "Nobody's Fault But Mine" – and one more bonus track from Robert Tanner, "Sweet Memories". CD

"Sexy Mama" is one of The Moments' best tracks ever! It's got a sweet slow funky groove, with a sound that really shows their association with Sylvia's production style. "Where Can I Find Her" isn't bad either, and has a nice sweet midtempo group sound. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Eddie HarrisCool Sax, Warm Heart/Cool Sax From Hollywood To Broadway ... CD
Columbia/Collectables, Mid 60s. Used ... $9.99
Ok, so this isn't funky Eddie Harris – but the 2 albums on this set are some of Eddie Harris' most unique albums of the 60s! The records features Eddie blowing in that lean and soulful mode that he used on his best Vee Jay albums – a bit exotic, but never meandering, with impeccable placement in all his solos, and a tone that's probably one of the most revolutionary he ever used. Some tracks have a backing chorus of female voices, singing in a floating mode that's hip and easy – and others are straighter jazz tunes, with a nice little groove. Features the modal gem "Hip Hoppin", plus "Stum Stang", "Django's Castle", "More Soul Than Soulful", "Little Lo Lo", "Groovy Moovies", "Sarah's Theme", and "Brother Ed" – and even familiar tunes like "Topkapi", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Malamondo", and "From Russia With Love" sound pretty darn great! Tommy McGeeI'm A Stranger (Positive Negative plus bonus tracks) ... LP
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 24.99
A treasure trove of rare soul work from Tommy McGee – a fantastic sweet soul singer from the Michigan scene of the 70s, and one who should have been huge – judging by the quality of the work on this set! The core of the package is Tommy's rare 1976 album Positive Negative – a record that feels like some of the best All-Platinum/Stang New Jersey soul of the period – laidback, but with an edge – mellow, but slowly funky too – with Tommy's sweet vocals at the core of the whole thing, cascading gently around some really well-penned tunes! The set also includes a range of rare singles, too – some with Tommy in the lead, some by his TMGs band – a wonderful mix of rare Michigan funk and soul, all handled with the usual rock-solid Numero Group presentation. Titles include "What Can I Do", "Aggravation", "Give & Take", "The Hatch", "Now That I Have You", "Stay With Me", "Come On", "To Make You Happy", "Make Sure", "Take Me Home", "Guilty", and "We Ought To Be Together". ✨✧ FrightnrsNothing More To Say (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Frightnrs have plenty more to say here – and they say it in a really sharp-edged approximation of older rocksteady modes! The group are contemporary, but like the best acts on Daptone, they've got an instantly classic feel – thanks to instrumentation and production that take us right back to late 60s Kingston, but with some of the sharper funky currents we've come to expect from the label! And while The Frightnrs may pitch themselves as an old school reggae act, they're also one that have a heavy dose of soul – almost a late night New Jersey current to their music at times – as if the All Platinum/Stang label put out their own version of Jamaican soul. The approach is great, and very unique – and titles include "Hey Brother", "Gotta Find A Way", "What Have I Done", "Nothing More To Say", "All My Tears", "Purple", "Dispute", and "Till Then". ✨✧ TempreesLovemen ... LP
We Produce, 1972. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning vocal group session that was originally recorded for Stax in the 70's! The Temprees were not only the best vocal group on Stax Records, they were also one of the best groups to come out of the south during the 70s – with a sound that was very different than most of their contemporaries. Their sound is a blend of sweet harmonies that's very much in the New Jersey style of the time – and overall, the record feels more like an album for Stang/All Platinum than it does one from the Memphis studios of Stax. Titles include "I Love You, You Love Me", "(Girl) I Love You", "Explain It To Her Mama", "My Baby Love", and "Love Can Be So Wonderful". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Adrian Younge with Venice DawnSomething About April (2CD edition – with instrumentals) ... CD
Linear Labs, 2011. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A contemporary classic from Adrian Younge – and his first full soul album, after some previous soundtrack material! The record's got all the fragile, lovestruck qualities you'd expect from the image on the cover – a real throwback to the glory days of indie soul, particularly the East Coast indie variety of the early 70s – when beautiful ballads and falsetto vocals were the height of soul expression – often served up with surprisingly funky undercurrents in the backings! Younge gets all the right elements right for the set – and the whole thing feels like some lost All Platinum/Stang album from the New Jersey scene – really respectful, and delivered without any self-consciousness or gimmicks at all. Titles include "Turn Down The Sound", "Two Hearts Combine", "Reverie", "First Step On The Moon", "Sound Of A Man", "Dusts Of Gold", and "Sirens". Comes with a full bonus CD – great instrumentals from the album, almost as great as the vocal cuts! CD

Castle (UK), 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two dozen sweet soul groovers – a treasure trove of modern soul pulled from the best of the 70s indie scene! The set features tracks from powerhouse labels like Perception, Today, Stang, Soul Clock, Colossus, and Vigor – some lost killers by groups you may have heard of, and some even better tracks from others who've slipped off the pages of the history books, but who sound equally great! The overall feel is warm, soulful, and at a pace that runs from midtempo to uptempo – with tracks starting at the beginning of the 70s, running up to the underground styles of the early disco and club years of the middle part of the decade. Loads of great tracks – with titles that include "Gee Baby" by The Festivals, "You're My One Weakness Girl" by The Street People, "Check Yourself" by The Duprees, "Falling Out Of Love" by Derek Martin, "Don't Take Your Love" by The New Sound, "Key To My Happiness" by The Moments, "Learning How To Fly" by The Exciters, "Don't Hold Back" by Brown Sugar, "Love Lights" by Chuck Jackson, and "Pull My String" by The Joneses. Alithia, 1974. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A great album of sweet soul – and one recorded by a bunch of prisoners at the Rahway Correctional Facility! This was the group's second album, and by this point, three of the members had left prison – hence the "3 Down, 4 To Go" title – but that change in status doesn't stop the group from being as great as they are on their debut – and as before, George Kerr produced the set, and gives the whole thing a sweet New Jersey harmony soul sound – one to rival the best groups of the All Platinum/Stang era! Tracks include "Disrespect Can Wreck", "Corruption", "Brother", "We've Gone Too Far To End It Now", "La La Means I Love You", "The Shoo Nough", and "Let's Make Love (At Home Sometimes)". ✨✧ Linda JonesHypnotized ... LP
Loma, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest female singers on the east coast scene at the end of the 60s – heard here on a classic Warner Brothers set that includes some of her best-remembered tracks! At some level, the set's a prequel to Linda's later recordings for the Stang/All Platinum label – as it features production and arrangements by the great George Kerr – who really has a way with slow-moving soul tunes, and the kind of sad-tinged tracks that Jones always did so well! Plus, his raw production really brings out some of the deeper soul qualities in Linda's voice – a mode that's quite a surprise at times, and presented here in a way that's far beyond any of the Aretha Franklin-styled cliches of other singers. Jones is a tremendously unique talent in female soul, and this album's her lasting legacy – a true treasure with cuts that include the hit "Hypnotized", plus loads of other nice ones like "Last Minute Miracle", "Give My Love A Try", "You Can't Take It", "What've I Done", and "I Can't Stand It". BCW, Mid 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A tremendous album from a totally hip Philly soul group of the 70s – the kind of quartet who would have been huge, had they recorded in another city – but whose genius was most likely eclipsed by the superstars that were stuffing the Philadelphia scene at the time! These guys have a great way of blending the rough with the smooth, the sweet with the funky – a vibe that's maybe more in the mode of some of the hip acts on Stang/All-Platinum, especially The Whatnauts – or with the badass vibe of their contemporaries Soul Generation – all with a sound that's got a lot more raw power than you'd guess from their rented tuxedos on the cover! The production is nice and raw – just dynamic group soul vocals, with just the right touches of funk instrumentation and larger orchestrations – all with an edge that really hangs on, even on the mellower numbers. Titles include "Love In Her Eyes", "Message", "Invincible", "You Gotta Get Down To Ever Get Up", "I'll Always Love You", "I'll Get Over It", and "We Love To Sing". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest records ever by the legendary Marcos Valle – a set of pure genius that's beyond description – easily one of the key records that's got him so well-remembered in recent years! The record takes Valle's earlier bossa style, and filters it through a late 60s sense of baroque pop – filled with incredible sweeping arrangements, funky undercurrents, jazzy instrumentation, and lots of other cool touches – all sifted together beautifully by arranger Lyrio Panicali, and given a hip sound that's completely sublime! The music is almost a blend of soundtrack themes, experimental bossa nova, and deeply personal songwriting – all delivered with warmly crackling vocals by Valle in a way that goes far beyond language! One of the most unusual albums we've ever heard from Italian pianist Enrico Intra – and that's saying a lot, given his legacy of creative sounds from the 70s onward! This set has Intra playing piano, but also has all the spacey elements you'd guess from the cover – a very unusual mix of electronic sounds, odd effects, and acoustic piano – the latter of which is sometimes free and very avant, sometimes warmer and more grounded – but always handled with a spirit that's very much Erico's own! There are some moments of very strange percussion – which might well come from the body of the piano itself – and Alex Stangoni provides live electronics on a few of the album's tracks. Titles include "Ghost", "Interstellar", "Kick", "Through The Door", "Hanger", "Time Tai Chi", "Dorfles", and "Vertical". LP, Vinyl record album

Some of the warmest work we've ever heard from Polish film composer Andrzej Korzynski – definitely different than his quirkier sounds from early in the decade, and done for a TV show that was set in the Polish countryside in the 30s! There's bits of electronic elements mixed in with fuller strings and woodwinds – and Korzynski demonstrates a great sense of feeling throughout – a bit like some of the French soundtrack composers of the time, and their ability to create really moving, evocative passages in sound – but without some of the more cloying Hollywood styles. A few pieces here appeared in other series as well – and the set features 20 tracks that include "Tajemnice", "Wioska", "Jaskinia", "Zabawy Dzieci", "Mustang", "Cmentarz", and "Duchy". CD

Heavy funk from the Bahamas – a whole bunch of groups that will show you that Nassau had a lot more to offer than The Beginning Of The End! The groove here is totally wonderful – somewhat like American funk of the late 60s and early 70s, but served up with some very unusual rhythmic patterns too – a bit Jamaican at times, but certainly not reggae – and somewhat sunny and Caribbean styled, but not in a way that's cheesy or filled with any hokey island-styled stereotypes. Instead, the tunes are deeply funk and soulful – grooving with plenty of dark edges and gritty instrumentation that's often heavy on the guitar. Many numbers have vocals, and those are great too – and as usual with the Numero label, the whole thing's put together with amazing notes and packaging, so that you get a full history lesson and a heck of a lot of photos to support the music too! Hard heavy soul from The Wicked Pickett – and virtually a blueprint for the heavier sound of Muscle Shoals to come – as Wilson Pickett was to that soul scene what Otis Redding had been to the Memphis world of Stax Records! These aren't Wilson's first recordings – but as with Aretha Franklin at Atlantic, the singer really found a way to focus his talents and come on strong – with a hard-biting sound that made him one of the leading lights of the label during the second half of the 60s! An amazing look at the early years of Sly Stone – a hip array of rare projects Sly recorded with other artists, plus a few pre-Columbia gems of his own! The package is beautifully put together, and the vibe here is definitely a great precursor to the famous sound of Sly with the Family Stone in the late 60s – a perfect illustration of his early ear for funky rhythms and some of the most righteous soul of his generation! And oddly, even artists who usually sound far from Stone come out definitely sounding a bit Sly-like here – and the package features the usual Ace great notes, to help you understand where all this great music's coming from. Titles include "Danse A La Musique" by The French Fries, "I'm Going Home (part 1)" and "Home Sweet Home (part 2)" by Joe Hicks, "You're The One (parts 1 & 2)" by Little Sister, "Life & Death In G & A" by Abaco Dream, "I'm Just Like You" by 61X, "Underdog" by The Beau Brummels, "Can't She Tell" by Billy Preston, "LSD" by Freddie & The Stone Souls, "Stanga" by Little Sister, "I Remember" by Sly & Billy Preston, "Superfunk" by Freddie & The Stone Souls, and the cuts "For Real (demo)", "I Can't Turn You Loose", "Life Of Fortune & Fame", "You Really Got Me (demo)", and "I Ain't Got Nobody" by Sly Stone himself!
