✨✧ Stan Getz & Joao GilbertoGetz/Gilberto #2 ... CD
Verve, 1964. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one – as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that featured Gary Burton on vibes – a wonderfully cool combo that was very under-documented on record, and which makes a key appearance here. The combination of Burton's vibes and Stan's tenor is pure genius – a sound that's got all the subtle hues and cool colors of the Getz bossa recordings, but which is quite different overall. Stan's tone is amazing on these tunes – and titles include "Here's That Rainy Day", "Tonight I Shall Sleep With A Smile On My Face", "Grandfather's Waltz", and "Stan's Blues". Side two features Joao Gilberto without Stan – playing in a very groovy trio that's more straight bossa than most of his other US recordings – cool small combo grooving that's totally great! The lineup features Gilberto on guitar and vocals, Keeter Betts on bass, and Helcio Milito on drums – all working in a sweetly grooving mode on titles that include "Samba De Minha Terra", "Meditation", "Bim Bom", "Rosa Moreno", and "O Pato". Stan Getz & Joao GilbertoGetz/Gilberto '76 ... CD
Resonance, 1976. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Genius material from the team of tenorist Stan Getz and Brazilian bossa legend Joao Gilberto – reunited here in a brief mid 70s period, after their famous Verve recordings of the early 60s – and in a way that shows all the changes both artists had gone through over the years! Stan and Joao would go onto produce the sublime Best Of Two Worlds studio record during this same stretch – but this never-issued live date is arguably even deeper and darker than that record – as Stan blows with the stronger current of melancholy he seemed to unlock in period of his Sweet Rain record and onward – and Joao himself does all the singing here, without help from any female vocalist – with that bluer, more personal vibe he hit on his incredible record from 1973. The maturity and emotion of both musicians comes through right away – and support is from the trio of Joanne Brackeen on piano, Clint Houston on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – all wonderful musicians who also know just the right moment to step back and let the two giants dominate when needed. Titles include "Eu Vim Da Bahia", "E Preciso Perdoar", "Doralice", "Morena Boca De Ouro", "Joao Marcelo", "Aguas De Marco", "Samba De Minha Terra", and "Retrato Em Branco E Preto". CD

A landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with guitarist Joao Gilberto really pushed the format over the top – thanks in part to the vocals of Gilberto's lovely wife Astrud, who'd never sung in the studio before this famous recording! The record created a sound that was copied endlessly, and which catapulted Astrud to unbelievable fame worldwide – even though she was only included in the session at the last minute, because Joao couldn't sing in English – and the mix of Stan's tenor and Joao's guitar is wonderful – and backed throughout by this light, lilting bossa nova rhythms. Titles include the classic recording of "Girl From Ipanema", plus loads of other bossa classics like "Desafinado", "Cocovado", "O Grande Amor", and "Vivo Sonhando". CD

✨✧ Stan Getz with Joao GilbertoBest Of Two Worlds ... LP
Columbia, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful return to the sounds of Brazil for Stan Getz – a 70s album that reunites him with Joao Gilberto, but in a style that's somewhat different than the pair's older Verve recordings! The sound here is looser, freer – more in that breezy Brazilian mode that evolved out of the initial bossa years – and Stan's tenor sounds great in the setting, with those loose yet heartfelt lines we love so much from this period! Joao's great too – somehow even more "present" on the record than before, with that amazing ability to do so much with so little – as on some of his own great 70s recordings. Miucha contributes some English language vocals to the record alongside Joao's Portuguese ones, and Oscar Castro Neves handled the arrangements with a nicely stripped-down style that has plenty of focus on the percussion and rhythms. Titles include a sublime English language version of "Aqua De Marco (Waters Of March)", plus the tracks "Double Rainbow", "Falsa Bahiana", "Ligia", "Izaura", "Eu Vim Da Bahia", and "E Preciso Perdoar". One of the best of the Stan Getz bossa nova sessions – and a record that features the great Laurindo Almeida on guitar – playing with more virtuosity than either Charlie Byrd or Joao Gilberto did on their collaborations with Getz! The record's got a driving rhythm section, with lots of long tracks, and nice laid-back solos by both Getz and Almeida – who's getting in some of his few jazz licks of the 60s here, working in a groove similar to that of his earlier sides with Bud Shank, but which sounds almost even better in the languid company of Getz. Cuts include "Outra Vez", "Winter Moon", "Maracatu-Too", and "Samba Da Sahra". CD

✨✧ Herbie MannMann & A Woman/Herbie Mann & Joao Gilberto ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, Mid 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 groovy 60s sides by Herbie – back to back on one CD! A Mann & A Woman is a surprisingly groovy groovy batch of tracks that has Herbie joined by soul singer Tamiko Jones, for a nice set of tracks that have flute and female vocals in the lead. The groove is somewhat pop-bossa, and the album has great versions of "A Man & A Woman", "O Barquinho", "Sunny", and "How Insensitive". Jones is perhaps a bit less soulful than on later recordings, but her mellow moody voice is a perfect accompaniment to Herbie's laidback flute solos. Nice stuff, with arrangements by Melba Liston, Joe Zawinul, and Jimmy Wisner. Herbie Mann & Joao Gilberto is a good record, but with a title that's a bit misleading. Although Herbie and Joao are listed together in the artist credits together for the record, they don't really play together on the record – as did Joao and Stan Getz on their album together. Instead, they trade off tracks of bossa nova material, recorded with Jobim in Rio – Joao's by EMI/Odeon, Herbie's by Atlantic. The set includes a host of great light breezy bossa stuff – like "Amor Em Paz", "O Barquinho", "Bim Bom", "Bolinha De Papel", and "Deve Ser Amor". Not totally over the top, but a very nice batch of breezy bossa tracks with lots of light flute and guitar lines floating around! CD

Luiz Bonfa & Maria ToledoBraziliana ... CD
Philips/Verve, 1965. Used ... $9.99
Very groovy bossa tracks – very much in the mode of some of the Verve hit recordings of the mid 60s! After the success of the Astrud Gilberto/Joao Gilberto work with Stan Getz, it's clear that Philips and Luiz Bonfa wanted to get in on the act – and they've paired Bonfa's guitar with vocals from his wife Maria Toledo – a really wonderful singer with very Astrud-like appeal! The album's got some larger backings from Bobby Scott, who brings in a nice undercurrent of jazz – and while some of Bonfa's other work of the time is somewhat spare and dreamy, the style is nicely full here. Toledo sings in both English and Portuguese, and even scats wordlessly a bit – which we really like – on titles that include "Sambura", "Whistle Samba", "Tanto Amor", "Boticario", "Promessa", and "Sugar Loaf". A collection that's way better than you might guess from its gift shop-styled cover – as the package brings together music in a mix of different modes – including postwar French vocals, instrumental jazz, Brazilian music, and a few other styles – all in celebration of the natural elements of our planet! Despite the approach, this isn't some eco-themed package – as instead the music is maybe more poetic overall, and conjures up a host of vivid scenes and settings over the course of 43 tracks from a variety of artists who include Charles Trenet, Django Reinhardt, Sylvia Telles, Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, Dorival Caymmi, Georges Brassens, Roland Kirk, Fred Katz, Chet Baker, Johnny Hodges, Chico Hamilton, Henri Crolla, Jean Gabin, and Miles Davis. The album's an excellent bossa jazz session all the way through – with alto from Winter that's some of his sharpest on record in the 60s, and both guitar and vocals from Lyra – who's getting his American time in the spotlight here, in the way that Joao Gilberto got with Stan Getz! Yet this album's much more of a core bossa jazz combo set than the Getz/Gilberto records – with work from a quintet that includes Sergio Mendes on piano, Milton Banana on drums, and Sebatiao Neto on bass. Titles include "O Morro", "Voce E Eu", "Maria Ninguem", "De Quem Ama", "Lobo Bobo", and "Tem Do De Mim". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Zoot SimsRecado Bossa Nova ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
While not as classic as the bossa sessions that Stan Getz cut for Verve, these early 60's sides by Zoot (for the Colpix label) are still pretty tasty groovers in the pop bossa vein that was sweeping the US at the time. Zoot lays down some nice easy solos over larger bossa arrangements, and Jim Hall joins the set on guitar. Hall's not as Braziliany as players like Joao Gilberto or Charlie Byrd, but he does the job nicely enough, and there's more than enough good moments on this nicely priced 18 track set. Titles include "Instant Samba", "Maria Ninguen", "Recado Bossa Nova", "Poquito Cantando", and "Cantada A Orquesta". CD
