St GermainTourist – 20th Anniversary Travel Versions ... LP
Parlophone, 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $30.99 31.99
A 20th anniversary celebration of the groundbreaking album Tourist from St Germain – that creative combination of jazz and dancefloor rhythms that made for one of the biggest hits on Blue Note at the start of the century! This set's not an expanded version of that set, though – as the sound is really updated and taken into new directions with a whole host of guests – making for a record that's maybe more of a tribute to the original than any sort of typical anniversary package! St Germain works with a whole host of global contributors – and titles include versions of "Rose Rouge" by Atjazz, Terry Laird, Ron Trent, Nightmares on wax, and Jovonn – plus "Sure Thing" taken by Osunlade, Black Motion, DJ Deep, and Jullian Gomes – as well as "So Flute (2020 version)" by St Germain, and "What You Think About (rejammed remix)" by Traumer. Dusko GoykovichBrandenberg Concert – Dusko Goykovich With Strings ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 2013. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the greatest trumpeters on the European scene of the past few decades – heard here in a completely sublime setting! Dusko Goykovich has played in many styles and many ways, but hasn't ever done a date with full strings before – a long-overdue placement for his wonderful tone on trumpet – shimmering out front of a larger ensemble, in the manner of classic "with strings" dates by Dizzy Gillespie or Art Farmer! Altoist Peter King arranged the album – and titles are all originals by Dusko, some of which you might know from earlier records – reworked here beautifully for the new setting. King also solos on a handful of tracks too – a rich voice that provides a nice balance with Dusko's trumpet. Strings are never overdone, and the album's always got a nice swing from a core rhythm trio that features Renato Chicco on piano. Titles include "Good Old Days", "Handful O Soul", "Danca Comigo", "St Germain Des Pres", "Adriatica", "In My Dreams", and "I Miss You So". CD

✨✧ Hubert Rostaing/Maurice MeunierJazz In Paris – Clarinettes A Saint Germain Des Pres ... CD
Universal (France), 1956/1957. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two dreamy French classics back to back! The first 12 tracks on the set are pulled from an obscure 1957 Vega LP, issued under the name of Hubert Rostaing, who was the clarinetist on the session, and featuring work by Martial Solal on piano and Michel Hausser on vibes. The mixture of vibes and clarinet is a great one – and gives the album a hiply swinging sound that really fits the angular compositions on the set, most of which are by Rostaing. The next 12 tracks are from a 1956 album on Barclay, issued under the name of Maurice Meunier, who plays alto and clarinet on the album, in a group that includes Raymond Fol on piano and Pierre Michelot on bass. Titles include "Dig", "Samakoutra", "I Know, Don't Know How", "Ca Va Boullir", "J'en Suis Saise", "L'Heure Tourne", "Trop Tot", and "Bonjour Benny". CD

✨✧ RevolutionariesDub Out Her Blouse & Skirt Vol 3 ... CD
Bond Export, 1981. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
The third album of fierce, funky dub from The Revolutionaries – music that's great enough on its own, even without its promise of undressing your dance partner! The work here is in the best territory of classic dub – clear, clean rhythms that have a power in their starkness – then given some slight additional twist by the studio work of Scientist, who never goes as far out here as in some of his later work – and realizes that he can do a hell of a lot with just a little, by inflecting all the right moments on the instrumental tunes. Titles include "Friction Dub", "Runnings", "Germain Style", "DJ's Special", "Murderous Dub", "Gully Bank Rock", and "Hostile Behaviour". CD

✨✧ Sonny Criss/Hubert Fol/Michel De VillersJazz In Paris – Saxophones A Saint Germain Des Pres ... CD
Universal (France), 1954/1956/Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Rare French jazz from the late 50s and early 60s – previously issued only as 7" eps, and finally properly issued for the first time! The standout material here is by Sonny Criss – pulled from 2 different eps issued in 1963, recorded when he'd dropped out of the LA scene, and was rejuvenating his talents on the Paris scene of the early 60s. Criss' tone is fantastic here – slowly grooving on soulful small group numbers with either Georges Arvanitas or Henri Renaud on piano, plus a bit of guitar by Rene Thomas. Titles on the Criss set include "Early & Later (parts 1 & 2)", "Mighty Low", "Black Coffee", and "Don't Blame Me". Also included on the CD are 3 tracks by a quartet that includes alto sax player Hubert Fol and pianist Rene Utreger – swinging mightly on three tunes: "A Fine Romance", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", and "You Go To My Head". Last up are 4 tracks from the Michel De Villers octet – featuring Fol on alto and Geo Daly on vibes. Titles include "Penitas De Amor", "Cat On The Stairs", and "These Foolish Things". CD

✨✧ Michel De Villers/Claude BollingJazz In Paris – Danse A Saint Germain Des Pres ... CD
Universal (France), Late 50s/1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
Reissue of two different swing-based albums from Paris! The first 12 tracks on the CD feature solo work by Michel De Villers on alto sax, over arrangements by Andre Persiani – on tracks that include "Topsy", "Mes Freres", "Symphonie D'Un Soir", "Rock De L'Inauguration", and "Demain" – kind of a mixture of swing and R&B, with a focus on the 50s dancefloor. The next 10 tracks are some great early work from Claude Bolling – a bit less boogie woogie than some of his other 60s recordings, featuring a group with Ivan Jullien on trumpet, Gerard Badinin on clarinet and tenor, Michel Gaudry on bass, and Roger Paraboschi on drums. The small combo plays tunes that include "En Chantant Cet Air La", "Rock A Bye Bolling", "La Piege", "Bach To Swing", and "Tranquillement". CD

✨✧ Albert Nicholas & Jimmy ArcheyJazz In Paris – Classic Jazz At Saint Germain Des Pres ... CD
Universal (France), 1954/1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 postwar trad jazz sessions from Paris – both recorded with a laidback sense of freedom that was rare for the American scene at the time! The first 8 tracks on the CD are from a 10" LP recorded by Albert Nicholas with his "New Orleans Friends", a group that included Claude Bolling on piano, Buddy Banks on bass, Bernard Zacharias on trombone, and Guy Longnon on trumpet. The next 6 tunes are from a 1955 session by trombonist Jimmy Archey, done in a similar style that features French players Gerard Badini, Claude Gosset, Guy Pedersen, and George Arvanitas all recreating a New Orleans style of jazz. Tracks are longer than the usual 78rpm single takes – and titles include "Blues For The Club", "Clarinet Marmalade", "Demi-tasse", "Tiger Rag", "That's A Plenty", and "Christopher Columbus". CD

✨✧ Bernard Peiffer/Bernard ZachariasJazz In Paris – Modern Jazz At Saint Germain Des Pres ... CD
Universal (France), 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two sets of French modern jazz from the postwar years! First up is pianist Bernard Peiffer, leading a hip sextet that includes horn players Roger Guerin, and Bobby Jaspar – through a set of tightly arranged tracks that are sort of a mix of west coast cool jazz and Swedish postwar modern. Francy Boland arranged the 8 tunes – and tracks include "Strip Tease", "Paris Je T'Aime . . . D'Amour", "Who Is Me", and "Frozen Feet". The next 8 tunes are by a group led by trombonist Bernard Zacharias – done with a looser more swinging feel. His group also features Roger Guerin on trumpet, plus tenor sax, piano, bass clarinet, and French horn. Buddy Banks handled the arrangements – and titles include "Transcendentology", "The Man I Love", "Summertime", "My Man's Gone Now", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". CD

RevolutionariesDub Out Her Blouse & Skirt Vol 1 ... CD
Bond Export, 1979. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Late 70s dub from producer Donovan Germain – served up through a wicked batch of instrumentals from The Revolutionaries – who play here at their tripped-out best! The tunes have an offbeat feel that's different from more conventional dub – very little ties to any sort of initial song roots, with keyboard lines, moogy electronics, and other weird sounds that fly all over the place – while the rhythms are very deep, tight, and in the pocket – slow-stepping in heavy sonic space, with lots of nice splash around the drums! The original album was issued through Brooklyn's Keith Records – quite rare – and titles include "Ready To Dub", "Juliet's Delight", "Wisdom Dub", "So Much Dub", "Craven Park Dub", and "Don't Break This Dub".
