Albert AylerSpirits To Ghosts (Spirits/Ghosts) ... CD
Ezz-Thetics/Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1964. New Copy ... $16.99
A pair of classic Albert Ayler albums from 1964 – back to back on a single CD! First up is Spirits – only the second album ever recorded by Albert Ayler, but a tremendous statement of music that clearly marks the tenorist as one of the most important jazz talents of the 60s! The set was recorded in New York, and only ever got initial exposure overseas – but has grown to become one of the best-remember Ayler albums over the years – thanks in part to a rock-solid lineup of equal visionaries in the group, a lineup that include Sunny Murray on drums, Norman Howard on trumpet, and both Henry Grimes and Earl Henderson on bass – playing together on the title track, which gives the whole thing a really tremendous power. Ayler's clearly the spotlight, though – shining his light with brilliance both in his phrasing of the tenor, and his sense of timing and inherent rhythm – which opens the door to whole new pathways in jazz. Titles include "Spirits", "Prophecy", "Holy Holy", and "Witches & Devils". Next is Ghosts – a seminal early moment from the legendary Albert Ayler – an important session recorded overseas in Copenhagen – where enthusiasm for Ayler's music caught fire more strongly than in the US! The group's got an edge that's maybe even sharper than some of Ayler's ESP material, but no less powerful – with Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murray on drums – working through tremendous readings of six Ayler classics that include "Ghosts", "Children", "Holy Spirit", "Vibrations" and "Mothers". A wonderful precursor to the ESP years – and equally great! CD

Art Turk BurtonAncestral Spirits ... CD
TNT, 2019. New Copy ... $5.99
A fantastic record from Chicago percussionist Art Turk Burton – a longstanding member of the AACM, but one who's been so busy teaching and helping out on the local scene, he's never gotten the international fame he deserves! Art works here in a large group that mixes contemporary modes and percussion traditions, vocal passages and instrumental lines – all with this sense of knowledge and righteousness that really tie Burton back to previous years in the Chicago scene! The great Ari Brown is in the set on tenor and soprano sax, and Edwin Daugherty is on alto and soprano – and Maggie Brown sings on the set for a bit, too – evoking the spirit of her father Oscar Brown Jr, who would have loved the vibe of the record. The group's also got the great Yosef Ben Israel on bass, keeping a strong groove amidst the other percussion and drums – and Eddie Beard plays piano and organ in the group. The title track "Ancestral Spirits" is a tribute to Phil Cohran and Muhal Richard Abrams – and other titles include great extrapolations on "All Blues", "Listen Here", "Soul Drummer", "Summertime", "Night In Tunisia", and "Killer Joe". Leaf (UK), 2016. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 14.99
The amazing first full length set of Comet Is Coming – one of the boldest statements from the London jazz scene in recent years – and a brilliant blend of live jazz instrumentation and electronics! Shabaka Hutchings – as King Shabaka – is in the group on tenor, which he blows with this strongly spiritual quality – really reaching out as this organic core amidst some of the spacier, noisier touches – all of which never get too far-out, and which are just balanced enough to effect the cosmic journey that's always been the group's promise! Drums are nice and heavy too, and the whole thing has this fantastic vibe that's as immediately appealing as it is completely unique – which you'll hear on tunes that include "Space Carnival", "The Prophecy", "Channel The Spirits", "Deep Within The Engine Deck", and "Journey Through The Asteroid Belt". As a bonus, the 2CD edition also features their debut Prophecy EP – plus unheard tracks titled Ancient Tapes – "Slammin", "Transmission", and "Closing Credits". CD

Theon Cross/PokusCandace Of Meroe/Pokus One – Kaleidoscope – New Spirits Known & Unknown ... 12-inch
Soul Jazz (UK), 2020. New Copy (pic cover)... $19.99
Two great contemporary tracks – pulled from the Kaleidoscope project from Soul Jazz – a well-done overview of the hippest sides of the global scene! Theon Cross rockets out with "Candace Of Meroe" – a tune that bristles with quick-moving drum parts and these really deep-toned brass parts – intercut with riffing guitar, in a mode that's almost like some of the more upbeat work from Hypnotic Brass Ensemble! On the flipside, Pokus turns in "Pokus One" – a tune with equally vibrant rhythms – not entirely funky, but very dynamic – as keyboard bits and guitar parts shine and sparkle through the groove – all with an echoey, almost spooky sort of vibe! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Joe HarriottMovement/High Spirits ... CD
EMI/Vocalion (UK), 1964/1965. New Copy 2 CDs ... $19.99
Overlooked gems from this key reedman on the Brit modern scene of the 60s – two rare albums in a single package! First up is Movement – one of the most obscure albums recorded by Joe Harriott – leading light of the British avant scene in the 60s – and one of the best, too! The album features Harriott working with a quintet that includes Shake Keane on trumpet, Pat Smythe on piano, Bobby Orr on drums, and Coleridge Goode on bass – playing in territory that's somewhat in the neighborhood of his Abstract and Free Form albums, but also a bit more inside, with more of a focus on swinging, hard-hitting jazz. The rhythms are often quite tight and soulful, and although the album's touched with lots of angular moments – both in the solos and backings – the overall sound is wonderfully grooving and tremendously captivating! The album's got that perfect blend of modern, modal, and soul that make the best Brit jazz albums from the mid 60s so wonderful – and the set list includes original tunes such as "Movement", "Spaces", "Blues On Blues", "Revival", "Beams", and "Count Twelve". High Spirits is pretty unique – a set of takes on tunes that come from a musical show, but recast strongly as soulful sides for the Harriott combo! Pianist Pat Smythe re-arranged all tracks in the set – and really gives them a new sort of energy – opening them up for lots of solo work on his own piano, plus alto from Harriott, and some beautiful trumpet lines from the great Shake Keane – a player who always sounds great next to Joe. The rest of the group features Coleridge Goode on bass and Bobby Orr on drums – and titles include "Home Sweet Heaven", "Something Tells Me", "Go Into Your Trance", "I Know Your Heart", and "Was She Prettier Than I". Kidd Jordan/Joel Futterman/Alvin FielderSpirits ... CD
Silkheart (Switzerland), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
A wonderful set, and one that's definitely filled with spirits – most particularly from the tenor of Kidd Jordan, which has all this subtle power behind it, at a level that really gives proof to Jordan's many years on the freer side of the jazz spectrum! The trio here also features Alvin Fielder on drums and percussion, and Joel Futterman on piano, Indian flute, and curved soprano sax – but throughout the proceedings, which are freely improvised, the tenor of Jordan seems to be the real anchor in sound – an element that can match the modes of the other players, but also provide some direction too. Titles include "Start Stop", "Run Drop", "Start Continue", "Ripples, and "Double Strike". CD

Milestone, 1971. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A nice little session from Lee Konitz – simple, without many tricks, and a great 70s extension of the sound of his 50s work! The group's a quartet with Sal Mosca on piano – and on a number of tracks, the pair of them play together alone, Lee blowing introspectively, and Sal working in a post-Tristano mode that fits Lee like a glove. Other group tracks are equally strong, if a bit straighter – with Ron Carter on bass and Mousey Alexander on drums – and titles include "Background Music", "Baby", "Two Not One", "Another Nother", and "Lennie Bird". Charles Lloyd8 – Kindred Spirits – Live From The Lobero (180 gram 2LP set with bonus DVD) ... LP
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $39.99 42.98
Few players have the scope and depth of Charles Lloyd over the space of so many decades – and here, once again, Lloyd reminds us that his longevity in jazz has everything to do with the continued growth of his music – and not just the fact that he's stuck around for so long! The sound is wonderful – this 21st Century extrapolation of spiritual currents that Lloyd first unleashed in his early solo years, and which hit a very focused, clear vibe here in a quintet lineup that includes Julian Lage on guitar, Gerald Clayton on paino, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. Lage's solos are as searing as Lloyd's, but in a very different way – and the mix of his tones and the sharper reeds is beautiful, and spun out over very long tracks that include "Dream Weaver", "Requiem", "La Llorna", and "Part 5 – Ruminations". Maybe the strongest record so far from Mammal Hands – a set that really has the group growing in their sense of tone and color, and in the unique timing they bring to their tunes! The group is a trio, but not in a mode that you might be guessing – because next to the piano of Nick Smart, and drums of Jesse Barrett, there's also a range of instruments from Jordan Smart – tenor, soprano sax, bass clarinet, and electronics – all used in these shifting ways with the really fresh rhythms from Barrett, and these flowing chains of acoustic piano soul from Smart – cresting, dipping, turning, and soaring with a really majestic sensibility! Titles include "Floating World", "Spiral Stair", "Ithaca", "Chaser", "Late Bloomer", "Riddle", "Rhizome", "Shoreless", and "Versus Shapes". CD

Louis MoholoBra Louis Bra Tebs/Spirits Rejoice ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1978/1995. New Copy 2CDs ... Just Sold Out!
A beautiful double-length package of work from drummer Louis Moholo – a 2CD set that features one record from recent years, and a key classic from the 70s! Spirits Rejoice is one of the strongest 70s statements from ex-Blue Notes drummer Moholo – recorded in the company of fellow expatriots and UK avant jazzers that include Johnny Dyani, Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler, Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti, and Harry Miller. The album shifts easily between strongly rhythmic passages that show Moholo's roots in the South African jazz scene, and other, freer sections that also illustrate his importance in the European avant scene of the 70s – and overall, the record's got a beautifully soulful quality that guides it well through all of these moments. Titles include "Wedding Hymn", "Khanya Apho Ukhona", "Ithi Gqi", "Amaxesha Osizi", and "You Ain't Gonna Know Me". That record is followed here by 1995's Bra Louis Bra Tebs – a session with a similar style, especially in its use of African-inspired rhythms – but one that also features a different lineup, and some great use of vocals! Francine Luce sings on a number of the album's best tracks – in a style that's almost an avant-tuned approach to vocalese, and which seems to carry echoes of Norma Winstone – a voice that's dreamy one minute, challenging the next – and often used as a key instrument in the combo's lineup of tenor, alto, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums. Titles include "Utshaka", "Maybe Of Cause", "Moegoe", "Sonke", and "Lakutshona Ilanga". CD

Pharoah SandersSpirits ... CD
Meta, 2000. Used ... $11.99
A great later moment from Pharoah Sanders – a set that's one of his few from the time that really stretches out in the same open, spiritual territory of his classic recordings for Impulse! The group's a trio – with Sanders on tenor and wood flute, Hamid Drake on drums and other percussion, and Adam Rudolph on a host of different instruments – from hand percussion, to kalimba, bamboo flute, and gong! The style's probably mostly like Rudolph's other material – not nearly as outside as some of Drake's recordings – but the presence of Sanders' horn really shapes things a lot, and gives the whole thing a lot more bite than some of Adam's other material. The tracks are long, and mostly have Pharoah soaring out with beautifully emotive work on tenor. Titles include "Morning In Soweto", "Sunrise", "The Thousand Petalled Lotus", "Roundhouse", "Sunset", and "Calling To The Luminous Beings". CD

Flying Dutchman/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $24.99 44.99
Wonderful work from Leon Thomas – easily one of his greatest albums ever, and a set that was recorded at the same time he was working with Pharoah Sanders! Thomas really rose to fame on Sanders' classic "The Creator Has A Master Plan" – and this set really takes off from that moment – letting Leon spin out some spiritual vibes of his own, and step into a few fresh new styles as well! The album's plenty righteous right from the start – partly because the lineup includes James Spaulding on alto and flute, Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and the enigmatic "Little Rock" on tenor – who is actually Pharoah Sanders – but also because Leon serves up a shorter take on "The Creator Has a Master Plan" – done in a great style! The album also features a classic vocal take on Horace Silver's "Song for My Father", with lyrics that we totally love – plus the frenetic "Malcolm's Gone" – and the tracks "One", "Echoes", "Let The Rain Fall On Me", and "Damn Nam". Tribe/P-Vine (Japan), 2015. New Copy ... $19.99
Wonderful work from Detroit keyboardist Pamela Wise – and a record that really carries forward the Tribe Records spirit from the 70s! The overall approach is a bit more contemporary, but the set's still got all the best feel of a classic indie album from the underground – played and penned by Wise in close collaboration with reedman Wendell Harrison, a frequent partner of Pamela's on a variety of projects, and one of the driving forces of Tribe back in the day! Wise plays both acoustic and electric keyboards, and sometimes sings just slightly – although most of the album is instrumental – and in addition to Harrison's work on tenor and bass clarinet, the album features trumpet, guitar, and lots of percussion. Titles include "Ode To Black Mothers", "Hometown Composer", "Marcus Garvey", "Word Masters", "Khalil's Promise", "Ancestors", and "Can't Use A Sellout". CD

A fantastic step in the continuing evolution of the "Chicago Underground" project of trumpeter Rob Mazurek and drummer Chad Taylor – soaring out here in a set that's full of spiritual energy and a level of imagination that even surpasses their classic recordings from years ago! Mazurek blows piccolo trumpet, but also adds in some electronics – and Taylor is mindblowing on drums, playing with a style that's open, but always gently swinging – and matched with some synth bass from Josh Johnson, who also plays organ and piano on the set. The mighty guitarist Jeff Parker is the last member of the group – and like Mazurek, he's really come a long way in the past decade, and the quartet work together here at a level that has us falling in love with the Chicago Underground all over again. Moody at times, but never too loose – and titles include "Orgasm", "Good Days", "Batida", "All The Bells", "Unique Spiral", "Lome", "Westview", and "Strange Wing". LP, Vinyl record album

Astral Spirits, 2020. New Copy 2CDs ... $13.99 16.99
Maybe the first album we've ever heard from guitarist Karl Evangelista as a leader – and a set that marks a very strong statement, right from the very first note! The set is done in tribute to an older British generation of free jazz – the period which included The Blue Notes and Spontaneous Music Ensemble – and, as part of that effort, the whole thing was recorded in London, by Benedic Lamdin, with a group that features Louis Moholo Moholo on drums, Trevor Watts on alto and soprano, and Alexander Hawkins on piano! While the two older British jazz giants are a very welcome presence, some of the album's most compelling sounds might well come from the mix of Evangelista's guitar and Hawkins' piano – both instruments that have a very compelling way of making sharp sounds together, really finding the right pace and tone, with a sense of sympathy that really makes the album shine. There's a heck of a lot of music on the double-length set – and titles include "FDT", "Siyanga Pala", "I Eat Death For Breakfast", "Totoo Yan", "State Of Emergency", "Consummatum Est", "Warriors", and "Player Piano". An early masterpiece from Peven Everett – underground soul at its finest, originally issued in a hand-made package by Peven, now finally out in proper release! This set's much more uptempo than Peven's Speed Of Light album – jumping along in a lively groove with lots of house music influences and plenty of warm and soulful keyboards. Peven's vocals are more stripped down than before – spare, catchy, and really hitting the essence of his style. A few other tracks feature singer Billie Jewell, and most of the record features percussion from Larry Billups II – and as with Peven's other work, the album's steeped in soulful instrumentation that reveals his rich heritage in jazz. Titles include "Sounds Like Paradise", "The Lillie Walk", "Puerto Rico", "Boy I Need", "For Sun Is Gold", and "Draining Pain" – and this new CD edition also features the bonus track "Puerto Rico (12" mix)". The group features Brandon Lopez on bass and Marc Edwards on drums – with both Fisher and Daniel Carter on reeds – the former on tenor and alto, the latter on tenor, alto, soprano, clarinet, and flute (although we'd swear that we hear a trumpet in there somewhere as well!) The open space of the record allows the horns to work together in a loose formation that almost recalls the spirit of the loft jazz scene in the 70s – as does the work of Lopez and Edwards too – long, improvised performances that have a very organic feel – with titles that include "Crescent Moon Furnace", "Valley Spirit", and "Embryonic Breath". Burton Greene/Damon Smith/Ra Kalam Bob MosesLife's Intense Mystery ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 12.00
Amazing sounds from pianist Burton Greene – a modernist who's been quietly continuing a great legacy of creative music he started in the 60s – still sounding distinct and full of imagination in this well-recorded recent trio performance! The set has Greene working with Damon Smith on bass and Ra Kalam Bob Moses on drums and percussion – both musicians whose overall sense of sound matches the wideness of Burton's scope – which makes the whole thing way way different than any familiar sort of trio recording! Instead, the balance swings easily between each of the three points on the triangle, but with different moments of force that keep things very lively, and very compelling – on titles that include the three part title track "Life's Intense Mystery", plus "Anything That Ain't Yes Get Rid Of It", "Kid Play", and "Perc Waves". Jungle By NightJungle By Night ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2011. Used ... $11.99
Warm modern Afro-inspired funk & soul from Amsterdam's Jungle By Night – whose promising earlier 45 primed us pretty well – and this self-titled set of live-in-the-studio grooves for Kindred Spirits more than delivers on it! The set is described simply as "highlights from a recent studio session", which is a classic under-sell. It's solid, soulful and stylistically diverse grooves that roll from classic Afro Funk instrumentals to more of a highlife guitar sound and back again with style to spare. They're calling it a precursor to their first album, which again, is a promise of some pretty incredible work to come! Includes "Hot Mama Hot", "Termite", "Afro Blue", "Get 5", "Great Wide Open", "Camel" and the CD bonus track "ET" (one of the 45 cuts). 7 tracks, running 5 to 7 minutes in length on most of 'em. Mini album? Generously furnished EP? It's 40+ minutes of grooves, however you want to file it. CD

Hypnotic club grooves from the appropriately-branded Kid Sublime – a former member or Rednose Distrikt – working just as well on his own! Sublime brings in some pretty healthy influences from the Detroit scene, like many of the projects on the hungry Kindred Spirits label – but he's rocking straight outta Amsterdam – working with a number of Dutch vocalists from the underground club soul and hip hop scene. They've got a strong one out there, with some artists who should make a mark globally – vocalists Jneiro Jarel, Yinka, Cee-Major, U-Gene, Melodee, Lady Alma and others help the Kid deliver a solid set of hypnotic groovers that'll sound just as nice through headphones as it will on a crowded dance floor! 11 tracks including an intro and outro: "Space Jam 1 & 2" feat Lilian Viera and Stefan Schmid, "Analogue Sugar" feat Melodee, "Fruitsugar" feat Yinka. "Analyze This" feat Cee-Major, "Lookin' At Me" feat Lady Alma and Janeiro Jarel, "I'll Be Waitin'" feat Afrokosmetics, "The Harder I Rock" and more! CD

A double-length set that showcases the ever-growing, ever-evolving talents of drummer Quin Kirchner – working here in a variety of settings with help from some other great talents on the Chicago scene! Most of these tunes have a core sense of structure – and even when Quin is improvising more freely, he still finds a way to swing – working here on conventional drums, other percussion instruments, and even a bit of kalimba too – alongside a mix of players that includes Nick Broste on trombone, Nate Lepine on tenor and flute, Nick Mazzarella on alto, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, Greg Ward on alto, Rob Clearfield on piano, and Matt Ulery on bass. Many numbers have a spacious, ambitious vibe – almost spiritual jazz, of a quality that really has us respecting Kirchner more than ever – and the double space of the album is really needed to allow this majestic message the room to unfold properly. The debut album from a very hip trio – one that features Quin Kirchner on drums and percussion, Daniel Van Duerm on organ and electric piano, and Matt Lux on bass – plus all three members on some sort of electronics! The tunes are instrumental and experimental, but almost always have some sort of structure and rhythmic energy – a quality that maybe nods more towards the work that Lux has done on other sides of the Chicago scene over the years – as he's been one of the most diverse, adaptable, and collaborative bassists we can think of! There's some really great sounds running throughout – a record that's maybe post-jazz, post-rock, and post-improv – with titles that include "North Branch", "Bladewalker", and "Peaceable" – the last of which features guest trumpet from Jaimie Branch. Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 12.99
A really beautiful record from Rob Mazurek – and one of his most different recordings in years! The set's a quartet date, recorded live – and has especially strong input from Kris Davis, who plays both piano and prepared piano – using the acoustic instrument to inflect the music of Mazurek in a really different way! Also great is bassist Ingegbrigt Haker Flaten – always a great presence, but maybe more conventionally swinging at times here than usual, if that's possible. Although the bass may well be driven strongly by the drums of Chad Taylor – a longtime partner of Rob's, but also really showing the growth he's experienced since their more frequent projects from ten to twenty years back. Mazurek himself is almost understated, but in a way that lets the whole group work strongly as a whole – and Rob plays piccolo, trumpet, and modular synth! CD

Astral Spirits, 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Jessica Pavone plays viola and handles the compositions here – with a group that's less an ensemble than a well-matched trio – with Abby Swidler on viola, and Erica Dicker and Angela Morris on violins! The group's a bit like a string quartet, but with an extra viola instead of a cello – but the sound here is much more in the mode of some of the giants of avant jazz violin from years back – some of the careful textures of Leroy Jenkins, mixed with some of the lower sonic ranges of Phil Wachsmann, and an overall execution that has some of the more complex sonic elements as Roscoe Mitchell's orchestrations for strings. The album features four long tracks, all with a very drawn-out, almost minimalist approach – as the quartet slow-builds their way into tunes that have a very spacious vibe. The guitar of Ferran Fages has all these unusual tones – not just effects, but weird inflections and other sonic elements that bristle brilliantly alongside the brooding bass of Alex Reiriego, who really sets the tone for most tunes – plumbing a depth that's quickly explored by drummer Vasco Trilla too. We've always loved the music of Jimi Tenor – but recently, he seems to get better and better with each new record – hitting a spiritual, soulful depth we never would have expected years ago! This album's one of his best efforts ever – and feels more like some lost 70s Euro/African rarity – as you might expect from the compelling cover! All the jazz elements of previous Tenor projects are in place – but there's also more of a pan-global influence going on – especially in the complicated percussion that graces most tracks, and which provides a wonderful counterpart to instrumentation that includes tenor, flutes, and piano from Jimi – plus trumpet from Julla Eskola and Tero Lindberg, trombone from Jay Kortehisto and Heikki Tuhkanen, and guitar from Kalle Kalima. Tracks are long, and have a feel that's somewhere between Strata East and Parisian Afro jazz experiments of the 70s – and titles include "Universal Love", "Afroeuropean", "Eternal Mystery", "Africa Kingdom", "Dance Of The Planets", "Curtain Of Steel", and "Starstuff". Mars Williams presents a great installment in this surprisingly long-running series – a really unusual mix of Christmas songs with the avant jazz inspiration of Albert Ayler – served up here in two different performances – one recorded in Chicago, the other in New York! As with the previous volumes, there's a stunning mix of sounds going on – some of the sentiment you might get in a Holiday tune, which seems to open up the more human corners of Ayler music – which includes snippets of "Spirits", "The Truth Is Marching In", "Omega", and "Change Has Come" – folded together with Christmas themes on these beautiful long improvisations! The Chicago group features Williams on saxes and toy instruments – plus Josh Berman on cornet, Jim Baker on piano and viola, Kent Kessler on bass, Brian Sandstrom on bass and guitar, and Steve Hunt on drums – and the New York group features Steve Swell on trombone, Hilliard Greene on bass, Chris Corsano on drums, Nels Cline on guitar, and Fred Lonberg Holm on cello. Titles include "The Heavenly Home Bashing Of The Bells", "The Hanukkah Xamas March Of Truth For 12 Days Of Jingling Bells With Spirits In Chicago", "Did You Hear They Found Light In Darkness Looking For Chestnuts", and "Noel Omega Change Has Come For The Three Kings Who Lit The Tiny Candles In NYC". The trio features Ken Vandermark on tenor and clarinet, Joe McPhee on soprano sax and pocket trumpet, and Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar – the last of which is an instrument that's used in very different, very unconventional ways – more like a subtle sonic element, but still with some musical qualities – which then seems to create the same sort of balance in McPhee and Vandermark, both of whom are more fragile, more sensitive here than we've heard them in years! There's still a few more fully-blown passages, but the real beauty of the record lies in the more subtle sonic interplay, which is magical throughout. Haker-Flaten is especially impressive – a player who's always great, but whose fast, rumbling presence here really seems to move mountains – on titles that include "El Bound", "Chicago Deader", and "Blue Line" – all references to the Windy City pedigree of the set. Amazing work from Sun Ra – record that really features a great range of sounds and styles, and a heck of a lot of soul as well! Ra plays some especially nice rocksichord on the set – that freaky, fuzzy keyboard that comes off sounding like a guitar, even though it's played with keys – and there's some spiritual undercurrents to the set that are different than some of Ra's other albums with the instrument – some deeply feeling rhythms and soulful, spiritual expressions that really belie the Space Is The Place generation in which the album was cut. ESP, 1964. New Copy ... $12.99
A landmark recording – Albert Ayler's first album for the ESP label, and a record that hit the jazz world like a bullet! Spiritual Unity sets the stage for a format that would become huge in the European avant scene of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even today – the sax-driven power-trio, tenor against bass and drums, working freely with less rhythmic constraints than before, searching for new sounds and new modes of expression, working through changes in a style first proposed by Sonny Rollins, but taken to new intensity by the New York underground of the 60s. That sound is summed up here perfectly by Ayler, Gary Peacock, and Sunny Murray – working together with an edgey brilliance, on classic tracks that include "Ghosts: First Variation", "Ghosts: Second Variation", "The Wizard", and "Spirits". 50th Anniversary Edition – also includes the bonus track "Vibrations". Theresa/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
A wonderfully soulful session from percussionist Babatunde Lea – and a shining example of the warm spirits and cross-cultural experimentation going on in the Bay Area scene of the 70s! The record mixes 70s soul jazz with bits of funk, Latin jazz, and breezy west coast touches – making for an album that's got some of the earthy charm of work on labels like Strata East or Black Jazz, mixed with the tighter soulful production of some of George Duke's early 70s sides for MPS. The vibe is incredible – a beautiful mix of warm vocals, tight soloing, and message-oriented grooves – and the whole thing's great all the way through! A very cool compilation of tracks, seemingly recorded in the early 70s – but issued here in package designed to pay tribute to the 33-year history of the legendary Saravah label! Pierre Barouh, the founder of Saravah, is at the head of the party-like festivities, reciting his "Saravah Blues En 72". Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos performs quite a bit on a number of tracks, and other tracks feature performances by the group Mahjun and Jean-Roger Caussimon. The highlight is a lovely group vocal reading of Chico Buarque's "La Nuit Des Masques", with new French lyrics by Barouh, and nice percussion by Nana! A wonderful document of the free spirits and cross-cultural pollenation behind this groundbreaking label! CD

A stunningly beautiful book on the 60s work of director Federico Fellini – one that's oversize, and overflowing with images that include film stills, publicity shots, candids, film posters, and other vivid representations of his cinematic imagination – all put together in a special package by TCM! There's a bit of text in the book – a few essays, and some quotes interspersed with shots – but the real attraction is the lush, heavy pages – filled with striking black and white, and full color images – all with a vibrancy that's as compelling as the films themselves. Book is 304 pages, hardcover, in full color – with chapters on La Dolce Vita, Boccaccio 70, 8 1/2, Juliet Of The Spirits, Toby Dammit, and Fellini Satyricon. Book

A brilliant pairing of two musicians who never recorded together during their early days on record – but who more than made up for that lack with later classics like this! The cover's got the boldness of an FMP album from the 70s, and the music within follows that spirit – a bold live performance at Chicago's Empty Bottle, a frequent home to both musicians at the time – with Joe McPhee on trumpet, alto, and tenor – Peter Brotzmann on alto, tenor, clarinet, and tarogato – driven by tremendous work on bass from Kent Kessler and drums by Michael Zerang. The set features two long live improvisations – "Guts" and "Rising Spirits". CD

The key to the record is its adherence to the idea that less is more – so that the tunes never try to fit too much in the mix, and always have this organic vibe that's mighty nice – and understated in all the right ways. Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleNeptune Collection ... LP
Folkways, 1976. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Warmly experimental music from the 70s Folkways scene – music that's a mixture of jazz, folk, electronics, and improvised styles – played with an open, honest sort of feel! The Entourage Music & Theater Ensemble features four composer/musicians – Joe Clark, Wall Matthews, Rusti Clark, and Michael Smith – all individuals with a nicely subdued sensibility, despite the "theater" in the group's name. The work here is hardly performative – at least not in an aggressive sense – and instead is a beautiful matrix of sounds from instruments that include keyboards, acoustic guitar, soprano sax, viola, gong, and percussion – all used lightly, with an approach that's almost a folksier take on early 70s spiritual jazz – especially given the way the acoustic guitar is used. Titles include "Nature Spirits", "Incantation For The Death Of Self", "Space Needle Suicide", "Tar Box Poltergeist", and "Druid Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

Mats GustafssonTorturing The Saxophone ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... $13.99 14.99
Mats Gustafsson tortures the saxophone – but tortures it beautifully, too – in this wonderful set of solo tracks that mix tenor and live electronics, baritone and music box, and some solo baritone moments too! The title's a reference to a hilarious letter sent to Mats by Robert Crumb – who also did the lettering on the front – reproduced inside, in which Crumb says that he just really doesn't get this kind of music, or understand why anyone would want to listen to it too! Yet there's a beauty and fragility to the record that honestly make it one of Gustafsson's most compelling albums ever – especially the leadoff mix of tenor and electronics, laid out over five famous Duke Ellington numbers – all completely transformed by the process. Ellington titles include "Come Sunday", "In A Sentimental Mood", "I Never Felt This Way Before", and "Blue Goose" – and the set also features versions of the Ayler classics "Angels/Spirits" and "Ghosts" – and a 22 minute take on Lars Gullin's "Danny's Dream". Matthew HalsallSalute To The Sun ... LP
Gondwana (UK), 2020. New Copy ... About November 27, 2020 (delayed)
A gem of a record from trumpeter Matthew Halsall – one of our favorite jazz musicians of the past 20 years, and an artist who just seems to be growing and growing with each new release! This set picks up on the organic, meditative quality of some of Halsall's recent records – but it also has a bit more bite, and is maybe almost a return to the roots of his earliest records on the Gondwana label – those classics that first made us fall in love with his music over a decade ago, and which made Matthew a real front-runner of the current global spiritual jazz underground! The set's got this very rich presentation – as the leader's work on trumpet is mixed with harp from Maddie Herbert, flute and tenor from Matt Cliffe, piano and kalimba from Livin Gheorghe, and great use of percussion, bass, and drums – all on long tracks that build with the best sort of post-Coltrane energy – titles that include "Joyful Spirits Of The Universe", "Mindfulness Meditations", "Tropical Landscapes", "Harmony With Nature", and "The Energy Of Life". Hard driving jazz from the Japanese scene of the 50s! The album's one of the best recorded by Nobu Hara and the legendary Sharpes & Flats group – a really swinging set of big band jazz that drives with the power of some of the 60s recordings by the Clarke-Boland Big Band, and which offers plenty of space for the soloists to swing out during the set with really dynamic energy – especially as the saxes and trumpets break from the group to start their own sort of presence in the music! Unfortunately, all the notes are in Japanese – so we can't tell you the exact lineup or the song titles – but the album's a strong one, and a perfect example of the strength of the Japanese scene in the postwar years! Other players include trumpeter Virgil Jones, pianist Joe Bonner, bassist David Friesen, and drummer Malcom Pinson – and titles include a killer take on "Croquet Ballet", which Harper originally recorded with Lee Morgan – plus the titles "Dance Eternal Spirits Dance" and "Call Of The Wild & Peaceful Heart". A bold statement from this ambitious Chicago group – a righteous assemblage of musicians working in a tradition that's partly linked to the spiritual jazz of an earlier AACM era, but which is also keenly conscious of the underground soul of groups like Fertile Ground! At its core, there's a spiritual jazz vibe running through the set – but as the work moves on, a number of other styles come into play – expanding the vision of composer Shannon Harris, and really fleshing out the message-heavy nature of the set. We'd only heard 12" singles from Urbanicity in the past, so we were really impressed by the depth and scope of this set – and there's a few tracks on here that easily rank with the most righteous soul jazz we've heard since the 70s – especially the vocal numbers! Really unique work from a trio led by drummer Motohiko Hino, and which features Masahiko Satoh on piano and Nobuyoshi Ino on bass – all players who aren't content to just rest in the usual piano trio modes of the time, and who instead really break open the format with their creative work on the album! Satoh has a way of playing lyrically at the start, then really opening up – and Ino's bass rolls and dips with its own sense of melody that's quite beautiful – as Hino works far far away from straight rhythm, and often peppers the songs with personal exclamations of his own. Yet none of the numbers are ever too far out, either – just loosely structured, but respectful of the melodies, while never enslaved to them. Early soul jazz piano work from Takehiro Honda – recorded in a style that's quite different than most of his later albums! The sound here is full and rich – with Honda's work on the keys augmented by fuller backings arranged by Teddy Adams – all recorded in the US (we think), with a quality that's a fair bit like some of the best soul jazz coming out of LA at the end of the 60s! Honda plays both acoustic and electric piano – and the groove has a hiply vamping style that's always verging on funky, but which is a bit more laidback overall. The record echoes with plenty of the best influences from Les McCann, The Crusaders, Gerald Wilson, and other west coast soul jazz figures – and titles include "Greasy Spoon", "Sham Time", "Ain't Tell You A Good Way But", "Ain't It Funky Now", "What's Going On", and "Check Out Your Mind" CD

CBS/BGO (UK), 1975. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99
Jazz funk genius from Freddie Hubbard in the mid 70s! Gleam was a Japanese-only double album from the jazz giant in its original release – mighty funky at times, too – right up there with some of the best Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock Japanese sets from the 70s! It's a live set captured in March of '75 at Tokyo's Yubin Chokin Hall – long numbers played by a group that includes Freddie on trumpet, Carl Randall on tenor and flute, George Cables on electric piano, Henry Franklin on bass, Carl Burnett on drums, and Buck Clark on percussion! Each player has plenty of space to groove, and it's very well captured – you can hear the most expressive solos and the most subtle nuances. Some great solos by Freddie and the rest of the players – breathless tenor & flute by Randall, keys by Cables that are jazz funk perfection and interplay between Burnett's drums and Clark's congas & percussion that's somehow tense and comfortable at the same time. The shortest number in the set runs more than the 7 minutes and the longest is more than 20 minutes – and none is one second shorter than necessary, actually leaving us pining for more – making it all the more vital in the double album format. Released on 2CDs here! How this great album has been so hard to find over the years is a mystery. If anything, Kimiko's sound here is more dynamic than the Herbie session – as the Walton trio's backing is often light and airy, so that Kasai is hanging out there on her own a lot, really filling the tunes with a warmth and dynamic range that's incredible. Black Saint (Italy), 1987. Used ... $6.99
A new life for the ideas of saxophonist David Murray – worked out here in an octet of top-shelf players! The sound is avant one minute, swinging the next – and carried off with a rich sense of jazz tradition that really marks the growing appreciation of roots in the 80s generation of the New York scene. Murray works with both tenor and bass clarinet – and the arrangements here are great – filled with colors that shift and slide along wonderfully, horns that really lift each others' spirits, and work together to find a bold new space in sound. Other group members include Baikida Carroll and Hugh Ragin on trumpets, Craig Harris on trombone, John Purcell on alto, Steve Colson on piano, Wilbur Morris on bass, and Ralph Peterson on drums. Titles are all long – and include "Train Whistle", "Morning Song", "New Life", and "Blues In The Pocket". CD

Hiroshi OkazakiLiving Jazz – Neo Standards ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $22.99
A sweet Japanese take on American easy grooves – an album originally issued in 1971 under the title Easy Listening Special, and featuring the vocals of Hiroshi Okazaki! Hiroshi sings in English, with a warm, mellow, and round sort of tone – not exactly soulful, but cool and almost breezy – perfect for the album's light instrumentation and catchy bossa-styled rhythms. There's some great piano on the set – tinkling away over slightly funky bass and drum bits – almost in the mode of some of the sweeter work by the Young-Holt combo – with the addition of vocals, of course! Titles include "Spinning Wheel", "Girl Talk", "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head", "Here There & Everywhere", "Maybe September", and "Didn't We". CD

Hiroshi OkazakiLiving Voices – Neo Standards ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $13.99
A great lost slice of easy from Japan – sweet vocal tracks that are sort of a groovy take on the Hawaiian sound of the 60s! The tracks include a lot of Hawaiian standards, sung by the Living Voices in a mode that's occasionally gentle and dreamy, but which at other times has a surprising groove underneath – not the sleepy Hawaiian music records you'd know from the American scene of the 50s and 60s, but a groovier style that shows the way that the Japanese market continued to explore the genre,a nd really make something different! The set brings together titles from 1970 and 1974 albums, and titles include "Beyond The Reef", "To You Sweetheart Aloha", "Mapuana", "Blue Hawaii", "Lovely Hula Hands", and "Around The World". CD

OsibisaBlack Magic Night – Osibisa Live At The Royal Festival Hall ... LP
Bronze/Trading Places (UK), 1977. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $22.99
A surprisingly strong set from Osibisa – one that's got a full, rich, soulful feel – much better than we might have expected for an album recorded at the Royal Festival Hall! The venue's no surprise, though, given that Osibisa were clearly on top of their game at the time – and able to draw a big crowd at a prestigious event. The band has been expanded considerably for this live set to include extra percussion and backing vocals – all coming together with a majestic sound that almost beats the style used on some of the studio versions of these tunes! Titles include "The Dawn", "Living Loving Feeling", "Music For Gong Gong", "Sunshine Day", "Beautiful Seven Y Sharp", and a nice take on Roland Kirk's "Spirits Up Above". LP, Vinyl record album

Steve ReidNova (with bonus download) ... LP
Mustevic Sound/Soul Jazz (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
An underground soul jazz classic – massive grooves from drummer Steve Reid, and exactly the kind of set that's gotten him so much attention in recent years! There's a mixture of freedom and tightness here that's really wonderful – some of the looser elements of the loft jazz generation, mixed with an inherent sense of rhythm that always set Reid's records apart from the rest – a groove that comes not just from his own pulsations on the drum kit, but also from the elliptical basslines of Richard Williams on electric and Luis Angel Falcon on acoustic, and the mixed organ and piano lines of keyboardist Les Walker. Joe Rigby brings some really sharp-edged sax work to the record, alongside the trumpet of Ahmed Abdullah, who really sounds wonderful here – bringing a spirituality to the album that's clearly borrowed from his time with Sun Ra. The album includes the great groover "Lions of Judah" – which has a very Ra-like quality – plus other great cuts "Long Time Black", "Sixth House", "Nova", and "Free Spirits Unknown". Teru SakamotoTeru Sakamoto Trio Live At Rikuzen Johnny ... CD
Johnny's Disk/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $23.99
A tremendous live set from pianist Teru Sakamoto – a session that soars with all of the life, soul, and imagination of McCoy Tyner at his 70s best! The record's got a feel that's quite open – long tracks, with plenty of solo space for Sakamoto on the piano – but the sound is always inside, rhythmic, and focused – never too out or too experimental, just soaring up to the skies with a brilliant sense of expression. The trio features Takao Neichi on bass and Takeshi Watanabe on drums – and titles include a great modal take on "My Favorite Things", plus "Left Alone", "Yuyake Koyake", and "Autumn Leaves". CD

Pharoah SandersWisdom Through Music ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... About January 20, 2021
Soaring spirits and joyous jazz-based expression – an overlooked treasure from Pharoah Sanders – and proof that his work on Impulse Records just kept on getting better and better! The style here is a bit tighter than some of the previous Impulse albums – no side-long tracks here – but the overall feel is also almost a bit more organic too – with lots of rootsy percussion and earthy sounds in the mix, all emanating from instruments in ways that are quite unique! The core group features Pharoah on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – alongside James Brance on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Norman Connors on drums – plus percussion from the trio of Badal Roy, James Mtume, and Lawrence Killian. Percussion bits and vocalizations drift in and out of most tracks – giving them a rich sense of color and tone, even when the grooves are a bit more direct! Titles include a shorter take on "Love is Everywhere", plus "The Golden Lamp", "Selflessness", "Wisdom Through Music", and "High Life". CD
