Ephat Mujuru & Spirit Of The PeopleMbavaira ... CD
Zimbabwe/Awesome Tapes From Africa, Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 14.98
A set from the 80s, but a record with a very timeless feel – as Ephat Mujuru plays mbira here with a group that's heavy on percussion, and which features all these wonderful vocal refrains alongside the lead! The mbira is never buried in fuller instrumentation – and instead, the chromatic keys of the instrument get plenty of space to play out with the kind of warmth that makes the thumb piano such a blend of melody and percussion at once, with a universal sort of appeal that goes way beyond the boundaries of language in the lyrics. Most tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Mudande", "44"," Nyama Musango", and "Kwenda Mbire". CD

Spirit12 Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus ... LP
Epic, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $11.99
The crowning achievement of Spirit – and a record that you probably could have found in any college dorm room in the early 70s! The record's really a cut above for their generation – an expansive effort that hangs together with a bit of a concept, and which interweaves strands of rock, folk, and a bit of jazz – yet also a record that has a lot more polish than other efforts of its type, and which trades a bit of psychedelic indulgence for a tighter focus that really lets the best tunes sparkle wonderfully! Production is great – clear, but trippy at the same time – and Randy California's guitar work has never sounded better. Titles include "Nature's Way", "Animal Zoo", "Love Has Found A Way", "Mr Skin", "Soldier", "Street Worm", and "Space Child". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SpiritSunrise & Salvation – The Mercury Era Anthology (8CD set) ... CD
Mercury/Esoteric (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 8CD ... $54.99 74.99
Spirit are maybe best known for their revolutionary work of the late 60s – music that took a more freeform style of jamming and focused it into some surprisingly tuneful ends – but the group were really firmly back at their best during the overlooked 70s stretch in which they recorded for Mercury Records! The lineup on most of these tracks marks the return of both Ed Cassidy and Randy California to the group – and at many moments, the sound is almost out of time – sometimes a more focused hard rock take on the group's earlier work, but at many other points a lot more freewheeling and almost as experimental as at their start – which makes for a huge amount of greatness to discover in this overstuffed package. From what we can tell, the set includes all the material from the Mercury albums Spirit Of 76, Son Of Spirit, Farther Along, and Future Games – but also has a huge amount of other rare and related material – as well as two live sets, one from Austin in 1975, one from Cleveland in the same year! There's also 23 early demo tracks, 21 tracks of rare studio material from 1974, and even 8 more solo demo tracks by group members. The package has a massive 195 tracks in all! CD

Buddah, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Totally great – and a record you probably know nothing about! The album's one of the greatest ever to come out of the Hotlanta scene of the 70s – a tight batch of funk tracks with a heck of a lot of guitar. The set was produced by Tommy Stewart, of "Bump and Hustle" fame – and it's got an unusual style that's equally appealing to fans of funk, and fans of clubbier music – lots of tight playing, hard riffing, and longer grooves that soar along with impeccable grace. The whole thing's almost like the classic Wood Brass & Steel album – but with some rougher edges that make it even better! Includes the great tracks "Vine City" and "Messin Around", both of which are very long funk tracks, plus shorter cuts that are just as funky, like "Down Underground", "Freddie's Alive and Well", and "Buttermilk Bottom". Don't pass this up, it's a funky monster classic! LP, Vinyl record album

Vega/Numero, 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A trippy little combo with a distinct post-Coltrane feel – stretching out here wonderfully, on a hip little session on a homegrown label! The group hail from the unlikely spot of Las Vegas – but they've got a deeply spiritual sound that rivals the best work on the coasts in the early 70s – a very searching, righteous sort of groove – crafted beautifully from the tenor sax lines of Rick Davis, and the sweet Fender Rhodes of Ron Feuer! The album's filled with long, exploratory tracks – tunes that are free, but never too much so – and the mixture of electric keys and tenor works nicely throughout – giving the album a really unique and unified feel that sets it apart from other small jazz sets of its type. All tunes are originals by the group – and titles include "Vibrations", "Starship", "Spirit Free", and "Isis Unveiled". CD features 3 bonus tracks too – "Horizon", "Starship (alt)", and "Dear Latin Friend". CD

Three very inventive improvisers, all coming together in a set of performances inspired by the work of artist/writer Robert Henri – but with sounds that are definitely all their own! The mix of Michael Bisio's bass and the cello of Fred Lonberg-Holm is great – and Kirk Knuffke blows both regular and soprano cornet with these cool compressed notes that often make this nice bridge from the lower sonic reaches! Lonberg-Holm adds in some electronics – sometimes in ways that make it difficult to tell which source he's using, electric or acoustic – and titles include "R Henri", "Things Hum", "Orange Moon Yellow Field", "Both Keys Belong To You", "Use Them", and "A Dog Likes To Gnaw A Bone". Plenty of spirit, and plenty of soul – a 70s classic from organist Doug Carn, and a record that took his instrument, and jazz in general, to a whole new level for the decade! Carn's got this burning, righteous quality on his keys – a vibe that certainly owes something to Larry Young, but also takes off even further – working in a spiritual ensemble that also features his wife Jean Carn on vocals – sounding way more like a righteous jazz singer than on her later soul sides for Philly International! Other players are great, too – and include Charles Tolliver on flugelhorn, Garnett Brown on trombone, George Harper on tenor and soprano sax, Buster Williams on bass, and Alphonse Mouzon on drums. Tracks include "New Moon", "Trance Dance", "My Spirit", "Blue In Green", and "Arise & Shine". CD

CBS/Bread & Wine, 1972. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A beautiful little record from the glory days of the acid folk scene in the UK – a set served up by Clive Palmer, who you might know from work in Incredible String Band and Wizz Jones – sounding even more enigmatic here at the helm of a trio who were produced by the legendary Ralph McTell! The style is light years from the more traditional sounds of some of Ralph's music – very moody and dark, with instrumentation that comes from guitar, recorder, and a variety of other instruments – including the unusual dulcitar, which was invented by trio member John Bidwell! Lead vocals are from Clive and Mick Bennett – alternating on different tracks, and harmonizing with a very eerie vibe, one that's further expanded by the unusual production modes too. A few tracks add in other elements, but just lightly – really keeping the solitary, spooky vibe of the record intact. Titles include "Evening Air", "Serpent's Kiss", "Wade In The Water", "Soft Touches Of Love", "Music Of The Ages", Spirit Of Love", and "Sweet Slavery". CD

Columbia, 1976. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A big hit for the group – and a great album of smooth funky soul! Spirit is a perfect example of the way that Earth Wind & Fire could tighten things up, yet still keep them real – holding onto the deeply spiritual side that first made them great – but also focusing their energy towards a wider audience that showed their influence for years! Of course, with Charles Stepney helping out on production, it's hard to miss – and he's one of the few cats who could handle a blend like this so well. The compression in the band's playing is impeccable – with just the right mix of spacey spiritualism, sophisticated jazzy playing, and a straight ahead love of the soulful hook. Includes the instrumentals "Biyo" and "Departure", plus the vocal tracks "Earth Wind & Fire","Burnin Bush", "Spirit", "Imagination", and "Getaway", all produced to perfection by Maurice White and Charles Stepney! A really fantastic record from Chicago percussion legend Kahil El'Zabar – and one that features plenty of guest work on tenor from David Murray, a musician who always seems to be a perfect match for the musical ideas of Kahil! And the leader also steps out with a great side of his talents on the record too – as El'Zabar sings on a number of tracks – something he doesn't do often, but which always makes for a really special sound when he does – a vibe that's almost as if you've picked up some righteous record from the early 70s, in a really cool blend of jazz, soul, and message-oriented themes! The rest of the group features Emma Dayhuff on bass and Justin Dillard on piano and organ – and as usual, Kahil plays a huge range of percussion instruments, always inventively – and creating a richly organic setting that also seems to bring out the best in David Murray too. Titles include "Trane In Mind", "One World Family", "In My House", "Songs Of Myself", "In The Spirit", and "Necktar". LP, Vinyl record album

Some of the most soulful music we've ever heard from bassist William Parker – a set that puts his mighty instrument to use at the core of a sextet who move with a sound that's perhaps a bit more straight ahead than some of Parker's usual music – but no less spiritual at all! The group's got a key element in the vocals of singer Leena Conquest – an artist we've always liked on Parker's other records, but who really has a righteous power here, very much in a classic 70s mode – soaring out front on her lyrics with a quality that we'd reserve for a rare few jazz singers – like Carmen Lundy or Dee Dee Bridgewater! And like both of them, she gels perfectly with the rest of the group – which includes great work from Rob Brown on alto, Lewis Barnes on trumpet, Eri Yamamoto on piano, and Hamid Drake on drums. Parker is sublime throughout – sounding as bold and righteous as ever – and titles include "Bowl Of Stone Around The Sun", "Feet Music", "Dodson Ngoni Blues", "Great Spirit", and "Prayer Improv". CD

Soul Jazz (UK), 2005. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $39.99
Drummer Steve Reid made some fantastic records back in the 70s – indie label spiritual jazz sessions that went on to become the stuff of legend over the decades – so much so, Reid was able to return to the forefront with this amazing new record in the 21st Century! The set is something of a partnership with Kieran Hebden, who was then of Fourtet, but maybe reached equal fame through his work with Reid – mixing electronics with Steve's drums and percussion – in a very cool ensemble that also features Nathaniel Catchpole and Neil Kleiner on tenor saxes, Chuck Henderson on soprano, Tony Bevan on bass sax, Boris Netsvetaev on keyboards, and John Edwards on bass. The sound is amazing – really a precursor to both the new modes that would emerge on the London scene in the following decade, and the rebirth of spiritual jazz around the same time – on titles that include "Lugano", "Drum Story", "Bridget", "For Coltrane", "Blind Tom", "Which One", "Lions Of Juda", "It Cannot Be True", and "Unity". Red Rodney & Ira SullivanSpirit Within ... LP
Elektra, 1982. Sealed ... $9.99
Really beautiful work from the team of Red Rodney and Ira Sullivan – hardly the sort of stuff we might have heard from the players a decade or two before – and a sophisticated batch of tunes that has them stretching out in rich musical directions! There's little of the boppish roots of either player here – and instead, the album mostly features inspiring jazz compositions from Garry Dial – the pianist in the group, and a real genius with color, tone, and timing. Dial's tunes dominate most of the record, and they really set the group on a great footing – horn trading between Rodney's trumpet and Sullivan's soprano, flute, and flugelhorn – supported with complicated changes from the core rhythm trio. Titles include "Spirit Within", "King Of France", "Sophisticated Yenta", "Crescent City", and "Monday's Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

Really haunting work from Leo Smith – a key 70s session that features some of his sharpest trumpet work on record, plus some unusual instrumentation that really makes the album stand out! Half the tracks feature some wonderful vibes from Bobby Naughton – spare and dark-sounding, very much a great companion to Smith's spacious trumpet and flugelhorn lines – in a group that also features Dwight Anderson on wooden flute, tenor, and clarinet, Pheeroan Ak Laff on drums, and Wes Brown on bass and a bit more wooden flute! The other two tracks on the session feature Smith's trumpet with a trio of harp players – Irene, Carol, and Ruth Emmanuel – all very interesting players on their instrument, using the strings in these carefully chromatic ways that are really wonderful – quite different than any sort of Dorothy Ashby vibe, but with a similar sense of spiritual energy. The deepest, most righteous music we've ever heard from Sheree Brown – and that's saying a lot, given how much we loved her first few solo records back in the day! Brown's got this rich vision here that really makes for a hell of a record – a set of tracks inspired by her younger years, but which are getting a mature handling here – with vocals that are maybe more heartfelt than in years, and set to arrangements that take all the warm, jazzy currents of Sheree's roots, and mix them with contributions that change up nicely from track to track – really fleshing out the spirit of the music as the album moves on. The lyrics are wonderfully uplifting – and titles include "Can I Leave Next Friday", "I Wanna Thank You Love", "Beautiful Girl", "Get Up Stand", "Take A Walk With Love", "Sorry Bout Bein A Ghost", and a remake of the Minnie Riperton classic "Les Fleur". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ COB (Clive's Original Band)Spirit Of Love ... CD
CBS/Bread & Wine, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
CD

Blue Note, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great lost album by John Patton – recorded in 1970, but not ever issued until 1995! The record was most likely held back because it's one of the funky organist's most far-reaching – a stunning batch of modal tracks that moves way past the usual organ sound, and much more into Larry Young-ish territory. A young James Blood Ulmer is on guitar, and the great (and underrecorded) Marvin Cabell plays flute, soprano, and tenor sax. Really great stuff – and most likely material that will disappear again for another 25 years! Titles include "The Mandingo", "Bloodyun", "Memphis", "Steno", and a cover of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints". CD

Harmless (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest gospel collections you'll ever hope to own – and an amazing document of the criss-crossing styles going down at the legendary Jewel Records! Jewel didn't just record gospel, but handled a fair bit of soul, funk, blues, and jazz – all of which seems to bubble forth in these amazing recordings – tracks that easily represent some of the hippest, coolest gospel sides of the late 60s and early 70s – the kind of work we've dug for years in its ability to easily cross over to the secular scene, thanks to wicked grooves underneath the vocals! And the vocals are pretty darn great too – work by singers who could have been huge in the mainstream world, had they broken from the spiritual realm – really belting out with the best of the southern soul scene of the time. The package features a whopping 41 tracks in all – with tracks that "Don't Forget The Bridge" by Mighty Songs Of Glory, "There's A Creator" by Roscoe Robinson, "Trouble's Brewin" by The Meditation Singers, "Brotherly Love" by BP's Revolution, "I'm Trying To Be Your Friend" by Soul Stirrers, "Far Away From God" by Armstrong Brothers, "Golden Gate" by Traveling Echoes, "He's A Friend" by Dorothy Norwood, "Watch That Rogue" by Silver Gate Quartet, "You've Got To Serve Somebody" by Bill Moss, and "The Upper Way" by The Violinaires. Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most unique albums on the Strata East label – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the creative energies flowing through that legendary jazz outlet! Descendents Of Mike & Phoebe is a righteous little project put together by Spike Lee's father, Bill Lee, and his brothers and sisters (Cliff Lee, Grace Lee Mims, and Consuela Lee Moorhead) – working here in a group named after their slave ancestors, who are paid tribute in a beautifully flowing batch of tunes! Lee's round, warm bass tones are firmly at the head of the group on most numbers – recorded at a similar level to his excellent work with Clifford Jordan on Strata East during the same time – and other instrumentation includes piano from Consuela, flugelhorn from Cliff, and percussion from Sonny Brown and Billy Higgins – all used in a wonderfully evocative style that's even better than some of Lee's later soundtrack work. A few numbers feature vocals from Grace – singing wordlessly and with a really heavenly sort of quality – and together, the whole group have a undeniable sense of power and majesty, yet also one that's touched by a really personal sense of poetry too. Titles include a great version of Lee's "Coltrane", which was more famously recorded with Clifford Jordan – plus "Chick Chick", "Attica", "Too Little, Too Late", "Boll Weevil", "Don't Be A Stranger", and "Well Done, Weldon". ✨✧ Earth Wind & FireSpirit/That's The Way Of The World (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
Columbia/Vocalion (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of classics from Earth Wind & Fire – back to back on a single CD! First up is Spirit – a big hit for the group – and a great album of smooth funky soul! That's The Way Of The World may be Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and Afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth, Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid-70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". CD

Idris Ackamoor & The PyramidsAngel Fell ... LP
Strut (UK), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Saxophonist Idris Ackamoor is a living jazz legend – but not the kind that's stale and stuffy, and instead a continuously vibrant player who's given us mindblowing music since his initial recordings with his Pyramids group in the 70s! This version of the Pyramids is different than that one, but they represent a continuing evolution of Ackamoor's rich spirit – his way of fusing spiritual jazz currents with global rhythmic inspirations – but all without every sounding as hokey as so many others who try for that space, and just fall flat! There's a sense of power and inspiration to Ackamoor's music that still moves us tremendously – and which, today, seems more urgent than ever – especially as Idris has seemed to set a new fire under his talents in the past decade or so, obviously more motivated by the need for social change than in his projects of more recent decades. The album's a mix of vocals and instrumentals – but the vocals are often more chant-like, or handled by the ensemble – at a level that further deepens the spirit of the sound. Titles include "Land Of Ra", "Papyrus", "Soliloquy For Michael Brown", "Message To My People", "An Angel Fell", "Tinoge", and "Warrior Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

A record that barely made a ripple at the time it came out, but which is a real indie gem from the underground scene of the 70s! Al-Dos Band are a group who are equally well-trained in soul music and gospel – and they seem to stick more in secular territory on the record, but certainly infuse their music with a great sense of spirit – a soaring sort of quality that definitely lives up to the pride in the title! Themes of religion are mostly on the backburner, but the group often has the vocals rise up together in righteous harmony – sometimes over club-tinged grooves that have a nicely funky edge, sometimes on mellower tunes that bring out even more shimmer in the vocals. Loads of sweet keyboards here – handled by Roman Andren, who's at the head of a very soulful group! Andren plays Fender Rhodes, and a bit of acoustic piano too – amidst other instrumentation that includes vibes, guitar, and lots of percussion – served up with strong influences from older Brazilian rhythms, European jazz, and a touch of American soul – all wrapped up warmly with a really great sound for a contemporary record like this! In the notes, Andren claims to be going for the jazzy sound of the 60s and 70s – and he's definitely got that right, but also brings a bit of a contemporary vibe into play too – not with too many beats, but just in the way he manages to tune his grooves towards the 21st Century – not just copping older modes, but reinventing them with his own soulful spirit. Some tracks have vocals, and titles include "O Sapo", "Juanita", "Let's Live Forever Love", "Bumblebee", "You Never Told Me", "Vento Do Verao", "O Mundo E Seu", and "Til Another Day". Author Bento Araujo has given us previous examinations of crucial Brazilian records in the 60s and 70s – and this important third volume shows just how strongly the spirit of experimentation continued well into the 21st Century – as the CD era opened up new frontiers for sonic exploration, and Brazilian artists moved far past the familiar styles of the past! Given that much of this music has not been reissued over the years, the volume is maybe even more important than the previous two – and like those, it presents page-by-page listing of records – with a full page reproduction of the cover art, listings of tracks and titles, other details, and a page of notes on each record in both English and Portuguese. There's plenty of titles here that we're betting you don't have in your record collection – and the book is a great guide to digging much deeper into the wealth of amazing sounds from Brazil. 229 pages, softcover, full color throughout. The tunes are mighty lean – often keyboards with just a bit of rhythm – a setup that's not that different from some of the horror work of the time, but with a bit more warmth and occasional moments of funk! Plus, the keyboards feel like some off-tuned electric piano – hard to say what, exactly – which makes for a nicely sinister vibe, even when things are groovy. Polydor/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $44.99 65.99
All the albums from this mindblowing group – plus lots of bonus material too! First up is the legendary Galactic Zoo Dossier album – the start of a fantastic chapter for the legendary Arthur Brown – the first album issued with his Kingdom Come group, a combo who were even more insane than his Crazy World project of the late 60s! Brown is the quintessential front man here – singing in this really dynamic, dramatic way that's years ahead of its time – much more upfront than so many of the singers of the psych generation, and even the new hard rock vocalists too – at a level that makes music like this a great inspiration for so man styles to come! The instrumentation is as dynamic as the vocals, too – not prog jamming, but instead this really focused, fused blend of heavy drums, searing guitar, and organ – all sending things way way over the top. Titles include "Internal Messenger", "Night Of The Pigs", "Trouble", "Sunrise", "Brains", the "Galactic Zoo/Space Plucks" medley, "Creep", and "Creation". Kingdom Come is an album that bears the title of the larger group as a whole, but it's clear that mainman Arthur Brown is still very much at the helm – propelling the fantastic energy of the group almost like some carnival ringmaster – as his lyrics burst out with a power to match all the intensity of the group's guitar, organ, heavy bass, and drum interplay! There's a few moments that are nicely more complicated than before – almost as if Brown is using the new advances of the 70s to bring even more mania to his music – but without losing the rocking power of the previous records, nor giving way to too-jamming prog modes either. Titles include "Water", "City Melody", "Traffic Light Song", "Love Is A Spirit That Will Never Die", "The Teacher", and "The Experiment". Journey is an overlooked gem from the great Arthur Brown – not a set with his late 60s Crazy World group, but instead some great material done with Kingdom Come – a group who seem to be morphing with Brown into a really great space rock sort of combo! The keyboards and electronics here are stronger than before – not Tangerine Dream spacey, but fused with more hard-rocking modes that really take off and fly to the skies – so much so that Brown's vocals are often less a part of the sound than the group's amazing instrumental interplay – which could previously be shadowed a bit by his lead! The whole thing's great – a cool, compressed take on modes that so many others were trying to handle at the time – but maybe never this well. Titles include "Superficial Roadblocks", "Time Captives", "Triangles", "Conception", "Spirit Of Joy", "Come Alive", "Lost Time", and "Corpora Supercelestia". All three albums are presented with bonus tracks – and CD4 features Jam (The First Sessions) – the long jamming that produced the Kingdom Come sound before the first album – and CD5 features BBC sessions from 1971 and 1972! An unusual rock record issued by the Enterprise imprint of Stax Records – the same one that released the Isaac Hayes albums at the time, and maybe a good choice for Ben Atkins, given some of the soulful currents in his music! The ramshackle cottage on the front is maybe a good indication of the spirit here – a southern vibe that easily mixes soulful inspiration with more rock-based songwriting and instrumentation – recorded both at Muscle Shoals and at the Stax Studios, with work from Barry Beckett on keyboards, Roger Hawkins on drums, and Wayne Perkins on guitar. Ben's got a very distinct vocal approach – one that's all his own, and which nicely doesn't sound like he's trying to cop anyone else's game – and the set includes tunes by Bettye Crutcher, Dan Penn, and Bobby Manuel – the last of whom produced and arranged the set. Ezz-Thetics/Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1964. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A pair of classic Albert Ayler albums from 1964 – back to back on a single CD! First up is Spirits – only the second album ever recorded by Albert Ayler, but a tremendous statement of music that clearly marks the tenorist as one of the most important jazz talents of the 60s! The set was recorded in New York, and only ever got initial exposure overseas – but has grown to become one of the best-remember Ayler albums over the years – thanks in part to a rock-solid lineup of equal visionaries in the group, a lineup that include Sunny Murray on drums, Norman Howard on trumpet, and both Henry Grimes and Earl Henderson on bass – playing together on the title track, which gives the whole thing a really tremendous power. Ayler's clearly the spotlight, though – shining his light with brilliance both in his phrasing of the tenor, and his sense of timing and inherent rhythm – which opens the door to whole new pathways in jazz. Titles include "Spirits", "Prophecy", "Holy Holy", and "Witches & Devils". Next is Ghosts – a seminal early moment from the legendary Albert Ayler – an important session recorded overseas in Copenhagen – where enthusiasm for Ayler's music caught fire more strongly than in the US! The group's got an edge that's maybe even sharper than some of Ayler's ESP material, but no less powerful – with Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murray on drums – working through tremendous readings of six Ayler classics that include "Ghosts", "Children", "Holy Spirit", "Vibrations" and "Mothers". A wonderful precursor to the ESP years – and equally great! CD

That's a young Chet Baker on the cover of the record, and the set's a really beautiful experiment based on the music that Chet recorded back in the 50s – a reworking of some of the songs he sung and made his own, turned into versions with lyrics in Norwegian, and instrumentation that nicely changes things up! Don't worry, there's still a trumpeter in the group – Thomas Husmo Litleskare does a great job in that role – but John Pal Inderberg brings in some excellent baritone, crafting these warm solos that are a surprisingly great match for the Baker-spirited trumpet – in a group that also featuers Kjetil Jerve on piano, Stian Andreas Egeland Andersen on bass, and Tore Flatjord on drums. Vocals are by Sigurd Rotvik Tunsetveit – and despite all the strange language in place, you'll find plenty to love here if you're as in love with the classic Chet Baker spirit as much as us! A pair of Mercury Records gems from the Bar-Kays – back to back in a single set! First up is Too Hot To Stop – a pivotal album from The Bar-Kays – a key post-Stax set, but one that's still very firmly grounded in Memphis funk! The groove definitely shows a bit more polish than before – the same sort of shift the Ohio Players made after moving to Mercury Records – but as with the Players at their best, there's still plenty of sharp edges and deeply funky moments on the record – and if anything, the shift has really given The Bar-Kays a way to evolve their sound past some of the heavier modes of the early days, without losing any of the appeal of their groove! Some cuts have some great keyboards – almost producing a spacey funk feel at points – and titles include "Too Hot To Stop (part 1)", "You're So Sexy", "Cozy", "Spellbound", "Whitehouseorgy", and the nice mellow track "Summer Of Our Love". Flying High is a killer too – a great step forward for The Bar-Kays – an album that actually has them taking on a few mellower moments, amidst the heavy funk you might expect – yet all without softening their groove at all! The album's very much in the best spirit of the group's Mercury debut – still recorded in Memphis, with production that's tight, but never uptight – enough to firmly put the group at the top of the funk superstar scene of the mid 70s, yet never sell out the rich Memphis groove that first got them going! Titles include "You Can't Run Away", "Let's Have Some Fun", "Can't Keep My Hands Off You", "Whatever It Is", and "Shut the Funk Up". CD

Two jazz giants of the 70s come together on this rare Italian recording from the late 60s – South African pianist Dollar Brand (Abdulla Ibrahim) and Argentine tenorist Gato Barbieri – both working here in spare duo formation, with edges that are a fair bit sharper than most of their later work! The format is incredibly spare – just tenor and piano, plus some occasional cello work by Brand – dark and angular, but also filled with small flowers of hope, flowering in the spontaneous presence of these two great minds – a tremendous spirit that makes the record very different than freer jazz outings, and which maybe points the way towards some of the classic European tenor/piano recordings to come. Tracks are long, with a free flowing quality that's infused with soul and spirit – and titles include "Hamba Khale", "The Aloe & The Wildrose", and "To Elsa". CD

Bobby BareDetroit City & Other Hits/500 Miles From Home/Talk Me Some Sense/Bird Named Yesterday (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Four gems from the early RCA years of Bobby Bare – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Detroit City – a classic early album from the great Bobby Bare – proof that the man had plenty of charms in the years before he started working with hip singer/songwriter material! The set kicks off with the huge title cut – a track that Bobby does better than just about anyone else – and it follows with a host of well-chosen cuts and some surprisingly great originals – showing an early songwriting side of Bare that didn't always get exposure in later years! Bobby's got a great edge in his vocals, even young – less of the pop modes that you'd hear on some of his singles – on titles that include "Shame On Me", "Detroit City", "Is It Wrong", "Dear Wastebasket", "The Gods Were Angry With Me", "Book Of Love", and "I Don't Believe I'll Fall In Love Today". 500 Miles is early genius from Bobby Bare – a set that shows just how great he was at the start – able to bring a special spin to a country tune, even amidst some of the fuller Chet Atkins production at RCA! Bobby's got a very unique style – maybe more urban than you might expect, but still with a twang – a quality that always made him perfect for songs of moving and longing, as in the title cut. There's plenty of other numbers in that mode, too – including a few penned by Bobby himself – in a lineup that includes "Let Me Tell You about Mary", "Abilene", "Worried Man Blues", "Sailor Man", "Homestead On The Farm", "Gotta Travel On", "500 Miles From Home", and "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight". Talk Me Some Sense is wonderful work from Bobby Bare – a record that already shows the young singer reaching for hip material, and coming up with a mature way of putting over a tune that's unlike anyone else! There's some slight currents of folk in the music – but as with the early John Hartford records on RCA, the style is more country overall – but also in a very different space too – inheriting some of the hipper inflections of the changing 60s, even amidst familiar RCA production – which puts a really special spin on all the tunes. Titles include "A Little Bit Later On Down The Line", "Got Leavin On Her Mind", "Long Black Veil", "All The Good Times Are Past & Gone", "You Can't Stop The Wind From Blowing", "Heaven Help My Soul", "It Ain't Me Babe", and the great original "Passin Through". Bird Named Yesterday is one of the coolest Bobby Bare albums of the 60s – a precursor to some of his concept albums of the 70s, but done in a bit of a different mode too! Bobby delivers these little recitations between most of the tunes – speaking in different characters, but in a way that evokes some of the larger spirit that Lee Hazlewood brought to his projects of the period – a quality that's also echoed in the way that Bare puts over a tune – mature, and with a nice sense of distance that brings about a slight current of wit – quite unusual for RCA country at the time! The set includes some great tunes by a young Jack Clement – and titles include "Somebody Bought My Old Hometown", "The Air Conditioner Song", "The Day The Saw Mill Closed Down", "Bird Named Yesterday", "The Old Gang's Gone", and "They Covered Up The Old Swimmin Hole". Bonus tracks include "The Town That Broke My Heart", "Don't Do Like I Done Son", "Sandy's Crying Again", and "When Am I Ever Gonna Settle Down". CD

Mt Zion, 1971. Near Mint- ... $69.99
A soul record we'd put up there with some of our favorites produced in Chicago during the early 70s – a gospel album from Pastor TL Barrett, but one that's gone on to legendary status among funk and soul collectors over the years! Barrett works here with his Youth For Christ Choir, of Mt. Zion Baptist Church – a south side ensemble that's filled with genuine spirit and passion, aimed towards lofty ideals – but set up with some deep secular soul production touches and instrumentation that keep things razor sharp throughout! The album was cut at the affordable Sound Market Studio – but behind the soaring, spirited lead and chorus vocal arrangements are players supervised by Chess Records sax player and arranger Gene Barge – with other Chess players Richard Evans and Phil Upchurch on the sessions too. Raw drums, grooving organ, and incredible bass lines lay the foundation, but it's the voices that really shine on this completely wonderful, totally essential set! Titles include "Like A Ship", "Wonderful", "It's Me O Lord", "Ever Since", "Nobody Knows", "Joyful Noice", "Medley/Dr. Watts Hymn & The Disciples Prayer" and "Blessed Quietness". Numero, Early 70s. New Copy ... On November 12, 2021
A tremendous package of work from this overlooked soul and gospel legend – four classic albums, plus other rare material too – all packaged with detailed notes in the wonderful Numero Group style! First up is Like A Ship Without A Sail – a gospel album from Pastor TL Barrett, but one that's gone on to legendary status among funk and soul collectors over the years! Barrett works here with his Youth For Christ Choir – a south side ensemble that's filled with genuine spirit and passion, aimed towards lofty ideals – but set up with some deep secular soul production touches and instrumentation that keep things razor sharp throughout! The album was supervised by Chess Records sax player and arranger Gene Barge – with other Chess players Richard Evans and Phil Upchurch on the sessions too – and the music is filled with raw drums, heavy bass, and lots of great organ lines! Next is Do Not Pass Me By Vol 1 – an album that's got a nice balance between intimate soul numbers and larger tracks that have the whole Mount Zion Baptist Church along for support! The set's definitely got the strongly soulful vibe of Barrett's Like A Ship album – a strong ear for the best secular elements of the time, which are used liberally in the instrumental backing – to really send home the message in the music! Most tunes really soft-pedal the religion, and instead go for an overall feel that really crosses over to regular soul music. Next is the great second volume of Do Not Pass Me By – like the first, the product of a wonderfully spiritual setting on Chicago's south side – music created in the church, but with all the same vibe as the hippest secular soul coming from the Windy City in the early 70s! The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. I Found The Answer is one of the biggest-circulating albums from this fantastic figure in Chicago gospel – a unique set done for the Gospel Truth subsidiary of Stax Records, but a set served up in the same blend of soul-based inspirations as some of TL Barrett's indie label releases back home in the Windy City! Plus, the package features a full album of Singles & Sermons – rare non-LP material by this seminal figure in both soul and spiritual music. CD

Made In Germany (Germany), 1975. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 21.99
A fantastic live set from reedman Gary Bartz – captured here with his ultra-hip NTU group – who you might know from their classic albums on Milestone in the 70s! Gary's soaring out with a hell of a lot of pride and power right from the start – effortlessly spinning these long lines on soprano sax and alto, and bringing a bit of his voice into the mix too – working with a very sharp group that features Charles Mimms on both electric and acoustic piano, Curtis Robertson on bass, and Howard King on drums – players who follow Gary's lead wonderfully, and stretch out on some very long tracks that are even different than the spirit of the double-length live album that Bartz recorded around the same time. Titles include a smoking 24 minute take on "I've Known Rivers" – plus "Nation Time/Juju Man", "Rise/Celestial Blues/Sounding Song/Incident/Uhuru Sasa", "For The Love Of You", "Sweet Tooth", and "Peace & Love/Sifa Zote". Robbie BashoLive In Forli – Italy 1982 ... LP
ESP, 1982. New Copy ... $23.99
A breathtakingly beautiful recording of the legendary Robbie Basho – and a much-needed addition to his too-small catalog of albums! Make no mistake, Basho has given us some key records over the years – but his genius was so deep, and his life was so short, it always feels like there needs to be more added to the mix – which is why this album is so important. The set captures Basho at a time when he was working in relative obscurity, but maybe even more amazing than on his early years recording for Takoma Records – a more sophisticated guitar player, working with mindblowing dexterity, while still also following his own spirit in sound – a mix of underground American acoustic modes, with influences from Indian music and classical guitar – yet delivered with a personal style that's completely his own. Robbie vocalizes a bit, but the main focus is on his guitar – and the set includes a number of quite long tracks, and also some spoken introductions by Basho for more tunes, which are very illuminating too. Titles include "California Raga", "German Chocolate Cake", "Redwood Ramble", "Song Of The Stallion", "Grail & The Lotus", "Cathedral Et Fleur De Lis", and "Pavan India". LP, Vinyl record album

Robbie BashoVenus In Cancer ... LP
Blue Thumb/Traffic, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $21.99 24.98
One of the wildest albums ever from the great Robbie Basho – as you might guess from the cover! Basho first made waves with his solo guitar work (and a bit of vocalizations) for the Takoma label, during the early years of John Fahey – but as the 60s ended, Robbie had more of a spiritual awakening – which really changed up certain aspects of his music. The set's still got some beautiful long-spun guitar passages – acoustic work that makes Basho maybe an even closer tie to Sandy Bull than Fahey – but Robbie also sings a bit too, in this weirdly trilling voice that almost feels as if it's been pulled from some 15th century pagan culture, but infused with a new missionary spirit. Most of the set is instrumental, but these vocal moments are wonderfully haunting too – and titles include "Venus In Cancer", "Eagle Sails The Blue Diamond Waters", "Kowaka D'Amour", "Song For The Queen", "Cathedrals Et Fleur De Lis", and "Wine Song (Sweet Wine Of Love)". The groove is upbeat, bright, and brilliantly soulful – that punctuated Basie groove first formed when Neal Hefti was with the group, still carried off here wonderfully by a lineup that includes Frank Wess and Frank Foster on saxes, Snooky Young and Al Aarons on trumpets, Benny Powell and Henry Coker on trombones, and Freddie Green on guitar. Titles include "The Second Time Around", "Hey Jealous Lover", "All Of Me", "This Love Of Mine", "Saturday Night", "Come Fly With Me", and "South Of The Border" – almost a Sinatra album in spirit, given the choice of tunes like these! Jon sings on every track, with this raspy power that pushes the rest of the music forward very strongly – igniting the proceedings with the kind of fire you'd hope for, given the album's dedication to "the dreamers, seers, griots, and truth tellers who refuse to let us fully descend into madness". Batiste can definitely add himself to that list – as can guests who include Zadie Smith, Hot 8 Brass Band, PJ Morton, and Trombone Shorty – on titles that include "Cry", "Boy Hood", "Movement 11", "Show Me The Way", "We Are", "Tell The Truth", "Sing", "Until", "Mavis", and "Whatchutalkinbout". One of the most evocative albums we've ever heard from pianist Ran Blake – a set that's got all the sharp edges of some of his most adventurous solo work, but one that also has Ran working in a few different settings, often with a very poetic feel! The set's not a hokey retro-crime record – as you might fear from the title (and countless later jazz albums that evoke that aesthetic) – and although Blake's working through melodies from older films, plus a few original numbers in the same spirit, his presentation is completely unique – and explosively personal throughout! His own piano is tremendous – blocks of sound and runs of notes that are extremely imaginative, and which flow forward from the same dark spirit we love on Blake's other recordings. And they're often balanced with shifting contributions from other musicians – players who include John Heiss on flute, Paul Meyers on bass, Ted Curson on trumpet, and Daryl Lowrey on alto and soprano sax – all of whom make some great additions to the set. Titles include a nice take on "The Pawnbroker" – plus other film titles that include "Eve", "Touch Of Evil", "Le Boucher", "Pinky", and "Doktor Mabuse" – as well as Blake originals "Spiral Staircase" and "Garden Of Delight". Fantastic radio performances from one of our favorite stretches of the legendary Jazz Messengers group – a time when the lineup featured a young Bobby Watson on alto and Valery Ponomarev on trumpet – two players who'd grow into fantastic leaders on their own, but who here help bring a lot of new life to the group! Watson is especially wonderful – contributing a few key compositions, and that soaring spirit in his horn, which really helped usher in a whole new generation for Blakey's group. James Williams is on piano too, and we actually love his work in this group more than on his later sets as a leader – and remaining players include David Schnitter on tenor on the first six tracks, and Billy Pierce on the horn on the remaining two – and either Dennis Irwin or Charles Fambrough on bass. Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... $24.99
Mindblowing early work from pianist Paul Bley – two side-long tracks that really show the pianist stretching out and expanding his mind – quite far from even his few modern moments on record in years before! The group here is very well-suited to the spirit of the set – Mark Levinson on warmly rounded bass, and Barry Altschul on some freer, bolder drums – balanced with the freer lines on Bley's piano, but at a level that really shows that underlying sensitivity that made Paul so different than so many other avant jazz musicians of his generation. This is especially true on the sublime reading of Bley's "Mister Joy" – a mindblowing journey in music – but it also comes through on "Blood" as well. CD

EMI/Polysom (Brazil), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 50.99
An incredible album from Lo Borges – one of the best singer/songwriters on the Brazilian scene of the 70s! Borges first burst into the spotlight for his work on the Club Da Esquina album by Milton Nascimento – and his work as part of Milton's "corner club" really helped shape the style of the more famous singer. Yet Borges is almost an equally great talent on his own – with a soaring, soulful approach that's every bit as great as the best Nascimento material from the period – and recorded in a wonderfully similar spirit! The sound here is completely sublime right from the start – music that moves us, even if we can't understand the language of the lyrics – like some of the best work by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. There's maybe a bit more guitar than on some of the Milton Nascimento work of the period – but used in a fuzzy way that slides in nicely with some of the jazzy phrasing of the instrumentation – which is delivered with help from key contemporaries who include Beto Guedes, Nelson Angelo, Toninho Horta, and Tenorio Jr. The songwriting is amazing – and titles include "Cancao Postal", "Voce Fica Melhor Assim", "Nao Foi Nada", "Calibre", "Faca Seu Jogo", "Toda Essa Agua", "Pensa Voce", "Como O Machando", and "Aos Baroes". The tracks here all date from the mid 60s, and are Bowie's homage to that period in his life – but they're all played with a glammish 70s sensibility, and some definite Ziggy Stardust elements in the way the guitars come into the mix. Given Bowie's rise as a key songwriter of his time, the step back to an album of all covers is a surprising, but genius move – and the execution of the tunes here comes off brilliantly – with plenty of personal spirit that keeps them from being simple rehashes of hits! Tracks include "See Emily Play", "Friday On My Mind", "I Can't Explain", "Everything's Alright", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Shapes Of Things", and "Here Comes The Night". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim)African Piano (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Japo/ECM (Germany), 1969. New Copy ... $23.99 25.99
Haunting solo work from Dollar Brand – recorded live in Copenhagen, with a sound that's full of tone, texture, and subtle beauty! Dollar Brand is one of the few players that can hold us rapt with a session like this – and as with his trio and larger group work, the tunes have an intrinsic sense of rhythm that's really wonderful – a slow-building sound that draws on Brand's African roots, and has the notes cascading over one another in this shifting patterns that are totally great! Titles include "Bra Joe From Kilamanjaro", "Selby That The Eternal Spirit Is The Only Reality", "The Moon", "Xaba", "Sunset In Blue", "Kippy", "Jabulani Easter Joy", and "Tintiyana". Anthony Braxton & John McDonough6 Duos (Wesleyan) 2006 ... CD
Nessa, 2010. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
One of the more obscure Anthony Braxton albums of the first decade of the century – but also one that's completely well worth seeking out, as it's got this warm spirit of collaborative creation that takes us back to some of his best moments of the 70s and 80s! The record features duets with trumpeter John McDonough – a Braxton fanatic who's clearly a great partner for the saxophonist to spin out ideas – trumpet notes both muted and muted, mixing with Braxton's work on alto, baritone, sopranino, and soprano sax – each with a very different sense of interplay from track to track! The album features two long, very out numbers – "Improvisation" and "Composition 168 + (103)" – then moves into a sublime sonic exercise on "Massive Breath Attack", offers a surprising reading of "Hail To The Spirit Of Liberty", and also includes the tunes "Finnish Line" and "Schizoid". Anthony Braxton – Georg Grawe DuoAmsterdam 1991 ... CD
Okka Disk, 1991/1997. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99 14.99
A really wonderful, very organic album from the duo of Anthony Braxton on reeds and Georg Grawe on piano – a set that's got a looser, freer vibe than some of Braxton's other music of the time – and which maybe takes us back to the spirit of some of earliest work on the Chicago scene! Grawe's got a nicely pointed style of playing – notes that are free, but clear and distinct – which seems to almost produced a grittier style from Braxton at times, as he blows a range of instruments that include soprano sax, clarinet, alto, and flute. The titles are free of the more academic codes that Braxton usually brings to play, and the music is too – on selections that are simply titled "Duet 1", "Duet 2", and "Duet 3". CD

Peter BrotzmannChicago Octet/Tentet (3CD set) ... CD
Okka Disk, 1998. New Copy 3CD ... $42.99 48.99
One of the greatest releases ever from the Okka Disk label – a legendary set that stands as a great testament to the global improvising scene that exploded in Chicago during the 90s! Back in the early years of FMP, nobody would have thought to use the name "Peter Brotzmann" and "Chicago" in the same context – but by the time of these recordings, the legendary reedman had been spending quite a bit of time in the Windy City – working strongly alongside that decade's fresh generation of improvisers, at a level that also helped Brotzmann discover new energy in his music too! The lineup here is great – both octet and tentet groups that operate in an improvising orchestra tradition – with players that include Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Mars Williams on tenor and alto, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Mats Gustafsson on baritone and fluteophone, Joe McPhee on pocket cornet and valve trombone, Fred Lonberg Holm on cello, Kent Kessler on bass, Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion, and Brotzmann himself on tenor, clarinet, and tarogato. The set features three different live recordings, and one long studio set recorded over two days – a fantastic collection of music. Titles include "Burning Spirit (For Kazuka Shiraishi)", "Other Brothers", "Old Bottles No Wine, "Aziz", "Foolish Infinity", "Immediate Music", "Makapoor", "Foolish Infinity", "Other Brothers" and "Divide By Zero". ✨✧ Clifford Brown & Max RoachBrown & Roach Incorporated ... CD
EmArcy, 1955. Used ... $6.99
Quite possibly THE key example of the magic of Clifford Brown and Max Roach on record – a brilliant studio session that really has the group "incorporating" their sound – forging a bold musical statement that would forever leave its imprint on jazz for years to come! The format here shows Brown and Roach as a key force in 50s hardbop – extending Max's bop idiom of years back, and using Clifford's more lyrical approach to solo work to expand the tone, color, and spirit of their music – linking styles and worlds wonderfully, and forging a sound that's tight, yet also beautifully spontaneous and personal. The rest of the group includes Harold Land on tenor, Richie Powell on piano, and George Morrow on bass – and titles include "Sweet Clifford", "Ghost Of A Chance", "Stompin At The Savoy", "I'll String Along With You", "Mildama", "Darn That Dream", and "I Get A Kick Out Of You". Marion BrownPorto Novo ... LP
Polydor/ORG, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Genius early work from reedman Marion Brown – an album that was originally only issued overseas, where it was recorded – as part of that legacy that's always had Brown getting a lot more attention in Europe than back at home! Yet the record's a monster that stands equally with Marion's seminal sides for Impulse and ESP – and is maybe even bolder than both of them, as Brown blows alto in a loose trio – with Maarten Van Altena on bass and Han Bennink on drums – in a mode that definitely puts the "free" in free jazz – recorded before the start of both FMP and BYG! Yet there's also that sensitive, soulful quality that makes Brown so great – that element in the music that's always had recordings like these as key pointers forwards to the loft jazz years on the NYC scene – a brilliant blend of freedom and inner spirit – on titles that include "Sound Structure", "QBIC", "Porto Novo", and "Similar Limits". Segun BucknorSegun Bucknor ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1975. Used ... $6.99
Seminal sounds from Segun Bucknor – one of the most soulful singers on the Nigerian scene of the 70s, and an artist who can mix funky grooves with some of the deeper currents and moodier themes that you'll hear in Zamrock recordings of the time! The album begins with some excellent upbeat riffing – but also balances things out wonderfully with some slower funk numbers – tunes that used blue organ lines that really fit the spirit of the vocals, while bubbling along a more gentle groove! The sound is pretty darn fresh, all these many years later – and the album's a great illustration of the revolutionary power that Bucknor brought to the scene. Titles include "The Price Of Love", "No Condition Is Permanent", "Everybody Wondering Why I Love You", "The Good Things Of Life", "Tragedy", and "Nigeria One & Forever". CD

Tony BurkillWork Money Death ... CD
ATA (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A dead-serious effort from a saxophonist we hope to hear more from in years to come! The style here is a solid, soulful mode that really hearkens back to the best modal moments of the late 60s and early 70s – rhythms that seem to borrow an influence from African styles, but fused into a jazz mode that's got the soaring spirit of the post-Coltrane generation – very specifically like the hippest work on the Milestone or Black Jazz labels in the early 70s – work that would be a flawless match for Burkill's style here! Tony's got a really rich tone on the tenor – raspy and full at the same time, and really diving to the depths as he expresses himself on his solos – driven strongly by the bass of Neil Innes, who also co-wrote all the tunes with Burkill – with drums from Sam Hobbs, piano and organ from George Cooper, and percussion from Pete Williams. The whole thing's amazing – rock-solid, no-nonsense, and filled with soul and spirit. Titles include "At Odds With the World", "Out Of A Shooting Star", "Beginning & End", "Work Money Death", and "Third Of All Numbers". CD

Ann BurtonEarly Blue 1958 to 1968 ... CD
Muzak/NJA (Netherlands), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy ... $19.99 29.99
A wonderful collection of work from Dutch singer Ann Burton – all of it recorded before her breakthrough album, Blue Burton – featured in a set that includes her debut EP release from 1965, and a decade's worth of music from Ann's own archives, which appear here for the first time ever! Burton's a hell of a singer – already a fantastic stylist at the start, with a jazz-based ability to inflect and make every song her own – maybe an extension of 50s modes of singers like June Christy or Chris Connor, but also very much her own spirit as well. The set features Burton with small combos, larger groups, and even a few "with strings" sessions – a selection of 24 tracks that provides a key look at these early years of her career. Titles include "Let's Get Away From It All", "Fly Me To The Moon", "Miss Otis Regrets", "Sing A Rainbow", "Exactly Like You", "You've Changed", "The Moon Looks Down & Laughs", "Mood Indigo", "They Didn't Believe Him", "You Can Have Him", and "Let's Try It". George BurtonReciprocity ... CD
George Burton, 2020. New Copy ... $7.99
An album that explodes with life, soul, and energy right from the very first note – a jazz set from keyboardist George Burton, but a record that weaves in lots of different strands along the way – with a sense of imagination that's certain to make Burton's music something to really keep an ear on for years to come! Yet already, this record is more than enough – and grabs us in a way we're not usually grabbed – as George balance his own bold energy on piano and Fender Rhodes with occasional vocals from a female singer, work by Tim Warfield on soprano sax, Chris Hemingway on alto, and Andy Bianco on guitar, and a trio of different drummers who really know when to kick in and propel the album forward! Burton is never content to just lay down a solo, or swing a groove – and there's a larger sonic palette of soul to the record that has to be heard to be understood – yet even the few straighter jazz numbers are pretty amazing too. Imagine the joy you felt when you first heard the early records of Robert Glasper, and you'll get some of the energy this record can deliver – on titles that include "Finding", "Gratitude", "Spirit", "Reciprocity", "Third Prayer", "Finite Space", "Us", "Power", and "Turn".
