SphereInside Ourselves (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Strata/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $22.99 26.99
Really great work from the Detroit underground of the 70s – by a group that features a young Larry Nozero on saxes, who you might also know for his work with keyboard giant Eddie Russ! This set's a bit more hard-edged than Eddie's work – tracks that open up nicely in the more spiritual side of the fusion spectrum – with Nozero on tenor and soprano sax, Eddie Nuccilli on trumpet, Keith Vreeland on electric piano, John Dana on bass, and Jimmy Pelusa on drums – mostly lesser-known players, but working here together in a very comfortable vibe! All tracks are original, and nice and long – and titles include "Lonely Girl", "Alicia", "Inside Ourselves", and "Spitfire". Also features two "unknown" tracks found on the master tapes – both nice and long! CD

✨✧ Nile RodgersLe Freak – An Upside Down Story Of Family, Disco, & Destiny ... Book
Sphere, 2011. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The great Nile Rodgers has given the world a huge amount of great music – first through his work in Chic, and secondly through his endless amount of production, studio, and session efforts over the years! Yet the man himself had a tough journey long before stardom – recounted here in a surprisingly honest, almost heartbreaking story – the winding path that the young Rodgers had to wander before hitting it big in the world of 70s soul – a personal legacy that you might not always hear in his music – which is so sharp and classy, it belies the heritage of the man who created it. Nile does a great job of bridging these two aspects of his life here – in a decidedly personal book that can be quite polemical at times, but very forgiving at others – served up here in a softcover volume that's 318 pages, with some black and white illustrations. Curtis BrothersAlgorithm ... CD
Truth Revolution, 2018. Used ... $9.99
Bold work from the Curtis Brothers – Luques Curtis on bass and Zaccai Curtis on piano – a pair who've got the energy here of some of the great earlier brothers teams in jazz! By that, we mean that there's a unified vision to the record – strongly soulful work right from the start, augmented with key work from Bryan Lynch on trumpet, Donald Harrison on alto, and Ralph Peterson on drums – all top-shelf players with great legacies of their own, but who really fit in here with the vision of the Curtis', which is quite a compliment to their music! There's a lot of angular energy at times, offset by richly dynamic solos – on the kind of record that's bristling with freshness right from the very first note. Titles include "The Professor", "Sensei", "Chief", "Torus", "Staircase Of Mount Meru", "Parametric", and "Three Points & A Sphere". CD

Jun MiyakeWhispered Garden ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), 2022. New Copy 2LP ... $55.99 64.99 About December 14, 2022
Many years back, Jun Miyake went from working in familiar jazz modes to creating a genre that's all his own – music that has a very special vibe, and a sense of subtle beauty that's very much in keeping with the title of the album! It's always hard to describe Jun's music in words – as at some level, it's an extension of some of the more minimal experiments on the Japanese scene of the 80s – those cool combinations of sound that came after the initial work of Ryuichi Sakamoto and his contemporaries. But at another level, Miyake's music is sometimes more song-based, and tuneful – yet never across the entire space of a record at once. Words won't get us too far in trying to convey the quality of the music, but maybe the phrase "whispered garden" is a start – an introduction to titles that include "Farois Distantes", "Paradica", "The Jamestown Bridge", "Counterflect", "Progeny", "Parece Ate Carnaval", "Time Song Time", "Hollow Bones", and "Untrodden Sphere". Royal/Strut (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Hauntingly beautiful work from Nashenas – a singer whose name literally translates as "unknown" – although that may not be the case after this well-done collection gets his music out to the western market! Nashenas was something of a minor star in his own sphere – these tracks were recorded in Afghanistan, but also issued by the Royal label in Iran – and there's a really universal sense of spirit in the music, even if you can't understand the lyrics – as Nashenas sings with a subtle, but powerfully emotive quality over spare backings that include tablas, harmonium, and some other elements you might know from Indian music. The vibe is very much in keeping with the titles of the tunes – and tunes include "O Beloved The Sorrow Of Your Love Destroyed Me", "Flower Had A Thorn", "I Am Happy Alone", "Your Sorrow Is Killing Me", "The Author Of Destiny", and "Life Is A Heavy Burden". One of the most soulful sets we've ever heard from the mighty Ron Trent – a full length set that's a fantastic summation of all the genius he's given us on singles over the past decade or so – and a record that marks a real maturation in Ron's music! Make no mistake, Trent was always a cut above most club music talents – working with an understanding of deeper, older currents that always showed up in his tracks, but which really take root and flower here – partly through collaborations with members of Azymuth, Jean-Luc Ponty, Khruangbin, and other guests – but with a sense of unity that's definitely Ron's own! ✨✧ Skip WalkerTina's Contemplation – A Reflection On The Genius Of Tina Brooks ... CD
Skip Walker Music, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Skip Walker's a drummer, but he serves up a great tribute to legendary Blue Note tenorist Tina Brooks – an artist who only gave the world a handful of albums before passing from this sphere way too soon – and one who's left an indelible legacy on modern jazz! Rather than serve up a tenor-heavy take on the tunes, Walker instead takes his "reflection" in the title seriously, and does a great job of really reinventing the music – working in a trio format with some superb work on piano from Travis Shook and bass from Essiet Okon Essiet – a great pair who really push things in a nicely different direction – a mix of soulful rhythms and lyrical energy, almost as if the Three Sounds were asked by Blue Note to handle an album of Brooks' songs. Yet not all tunes are originals by Tina, as Skip and Travis have some of their material on the album – in a set that includes "Back To The Tracks", "Tina's Contemplation", "Good Old Soul", "Gypsy Blue", "Dhyana", "Home Grown", "For Heaven's Sake", and "A Call From Tina". A duo who really take the hemispheres in their title seriously – as lyrics and vocals are all by Otis Junior, and the album's spare rhythms and instrumentation are from Dr Dundee! Otis is a hell of a frontman – as he's got this laidback, raspy style that really fits the open, honest quality of his words – lyrics that are spacily spoken as much as they're sung – in this haunting style that really fits the crispy core elements provided by the doctor. The duo are surprisingly strong together – really supporting each other in the best way, and not lapsing into too-familiar beats-n-lyrics cliches – on titles that include "Hemispheres", "Bubble", "Why Can't You Just Come For Conversation", "The Mixture", "3 Winds", "Bye From Space", and "Under My Skin", which features a guest appearance by Jim James. ✨✧ Atmospheres with Clive StevensVoyage To Uranus ... CD
Capitol/Made In Germany (Germany), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A funky fusion classic from the 70s – a set put together by reedman Clive Stevens, but played by a combo that's almost an electric jazz supergroup – given that the lineup features Michael Carvin on drums, David Earl Johnson on percussion, Stu Woods on bass, John Abercrombie on guitars, and Ralph Towner on keyboards and guitar! Abercrombie and Towner are especially great here – worlds different from their work on ECM – thanks in part to hard-driving rhythms that really allow Clive to also open up with all these fantastic choppy solo lines on electric tenor, soprano sax, flute, and echoplex. The electric reeds might tie the record a bit to late 60s/early 70s projects by reedmen like John Klemmer or Steve Marcus, but Stevens has a style here that's very much his own – served up wonderfully on titles that include "Inner Spaces & Outer Space", "Un Jour Dans Le Monde", "Shifting Phases", "Voyage To Uranus", and "Electric Impulse From The Heart". Be Bop DeluxeLive In The Air Age ... LP
EMI/Harvest, 1977. Very Good+ 2LP ... $6.99 11.99
The "air" here might well refer to the charged atmosphere in the arena during the live show that makes up this set from Be Bop Deluxe – a nice summation of everything that Bill Nelson and the group had done on their studio classics from the mid 70s, maybe stripped-down here a bit away from the studio! Yet somehow, the music also has that wonderful sense of compression that the group always got – a way of layering the sound at a level that's maybe post-glam, pre-punk, and without some of the fuller trappings of ELO, with more of a focus on the guitar. The whole approach holds up surprisingly well on stage – and titles include "Shine", "Fair Exchange", "Sister Seagull", "Blazing Apostles", "Life In The Air Age", and "Ships In The Night". Workshop Jazz/Verve, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
An amazing record – one of the best on Motown's short-lived Workshop Jazz subsidiary! The album is the first to feature Roy Brooks as a leader – and the super-hip drummer from Detroit really knows what to do with the opportunity! He's working here with a hip group that includes members of the Horace Silver quintet – including Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor, and Gene Taylor on bass – as well as Detroit contemporaries George Bohannon on trombone and Hugh Lawson on piano. The overall style of the record is quite different from Brooks' work with Silver – and has a much more open-ended feeling emotionally – an early hint at the qualities that Roy would unveil on his rare indie sides at the start of the 70s. The tracks are a mix of soul jazz numbers and others with a rougher-hewn sense of modernism – almost like the excellent work coming out of Chicago during the early 60s, from artists like Gene Shaw or the MJT+3. All the players are at their best, and the album features some of the nicest tenor work we've ever heard from Cook. Titles include "Soulsphere", "Soulin", "Homestretch", "Passin The Buck", and "My Secret Passion". LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent split single pairing up a couple of the finest abstract beats maestros in the east or west – Jazzy Sport label veteran and Japanese scene heavy Budamunk, and the ever-adventurous, never predictable Radius, representing Chicago! Budamunk's "Everpresent" is a loose, hypnotic track centered on the fluid beats and atmospheric space between. Radius's "Get Into Something" is a really great cut, too, nicely paired with the other side, but moving at a tighter clip, keeping a steady, spacey atmosphere until changing up the mood for a strongly jazz inspired ending. Nice! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Rootsy noise sweetened by raggedly alluring melodicism from Califone – still one of the most vital and idiosyncratic groups of their time! We can no long heap the experimentalist tag on Califone – if we ever really could. They've got quite a sonic blueprint laid down after 8 or so albums, but they do continue to surprise us. Roots And Crowns is a strange and compelling blend of crackling, somehow rural sounds & percussion, strummed and sometimes chugging guitars, pastoral found-sound atmosphere and singing that's no more or less part of the ether than any other element. A timeless piece of work! Tracks include "Pink & Sour", "Spider's House" (which references Brian Wilson at his furthest out stage), "The Eye You Lost In The Crusades" (which references Nick Drake a bit in the guitar), "A Chinese Actor", "Our Kitten Sees Ghosts", "The Orchids", "Black Metal Valentine", "Rose Petal Ear", "3legged Animals", "If You Would" and more. A record with a very cinematic cover, and with a definite sound to match – new music from Louis Fontaine, but done in a style that's right up there with classic sound library material of the 60s and 70s! There's plenty of keyboards and organ in the mix, but fuller arrangements too – a nicely fleshed-out vibe that's almost narrative in the way the songs come across – even though there was no visual cinematic experience to accompany the music! Production is great, with the richness of a classic French studio production from the end of the 60s – and titles include "Colpevole Innocente", "Seul", "Circospetto", "Spheres", "Le Depart", and "Difetti Cristallini". Prestige, Late 40s/1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99 24.99
Nice 2LP set that brings together a huge amount of pivotal work from the early bop years of Diz, including titles recorded for the Guild and Musicraft labels, as well as Prestige. The set's an essential one, because although you often hear references to this material, most of it was originally issued on 78s, and it's always pretty tough to find together like this – especially because the set's got great notes and session details. Titles include "Emanon", "Our Delight", "Hot House", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "Groovin High", "Shaw Nuff", and "Salt Peanuts". LP, Vinyl record album

Mack Avenue, 2021. Sealed ... $16.99
A set that's maybe a bit more searing than earlier records from Cameron Graves – more full-on fusion at times, although still with some of the spacier elements we liked from before – yet definitely driven at points with the kind of energy that recalls the George Duke/Stanley Clarke experiments of the 70s! The rhythms at the core are really on fire – drums from Mike Mitchell and bass from Max Gerl – and the guitar of Colin Cook often matches the bold lines of Graves on piano and keyboards. Kamasi Washington guests on two tracks, Graves sings on one other cut – and titles include "Red", "Super Universes", "Sons Of Creation", "The Life Carriers", "Sacred Spheres", "Master Spirits", and "Eternal Paradise". A nice solo spotlight for Hprizm, formerly known as High Priest of legendary leftfield rap crew Anti-Pop Consortium – on a pretty sharp set that deftly blends timeless rhyme-centric hip hop, creative use of samples and a little it of the cosmic synth atmosphere that helped Antipop stand so strongly outside the box in their prime. Hprizm really focuses on the solo rhymes here, rooted in hip hop tradition on that front. A win for a veteran! Emmylou HarrisWrecking Ball ... CD
Elektra, 1995. Used ... $1.99
One of Emmylou Harris's best loved albums, and for good reason – it's a major departure from the some of the more straightforward, if neo classic country of her late 80s and earlier 90s work, taking on a more atmospheric sound with producer Daniel Lanois. Lanois deserves credit for inspiring a new direction for Emmylou, but Wrecking Ball is her show – and of all the folk, country and roots-oriented artists Lanois worked with over the years, Harris is the one with a voice big enough fill the atmosphere, and intimate enough to pull it back down to earth. Includes "Where Will I Be", "Goodbye", "All My Tears", "Wrecking Ball", "Goin' Back To Harlan", "Blackhawk", "Orphan Girl", "May This Be Love" and "Waltz Across Texas". CD

The one that catapulted PJ Harvey from a critical favorite to something of a popular favorite on both the US and UK – and her most remarkable creative stride to date! At the time, it felt like this was the one where Polly Harvey made a conscious choice to go "big" with sound, working with producer Flood after that famously stripped down Rid Of Me with Steve Albini engineering, but in hindsight it's amazing how the bigger sound, unafraid of electronics and all around grander atmosphere never even comes close to hiding the by turns intimate and mysterious lyricism – and it might be the best showcase for Polly's voice on record – projecting varying, unpredictable mood from track to track. Includes "To Bring You My Love", "Meet Ze Monsta", "Down By The Water", "Send His Love To Me", "The Dancer" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

A pretty remarkable set of spacey soul songcraft from Hiatus Kaiyote – a Melbourne group that blends moody, laidback live soul instrumentation with bubbling futuristic elements in a surprisingly seamless way – elevated even higher by strong songwriting and the soulful vocals of Nai Palm! Haitus Kaiyote has a sound that's steeped in cosmic soul, moody soul jazz and the artier/synth and programmed atmosphere of spacier moodscape figures like Flying Lotus – but it's band-based and song-based in a way that could really break Hiatus Kaiyote in a big way. Keith JarrettEl Juicio (The Judgement)/Life Between The Exit Signs ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1968/1975. Used ... $4.99 6.99
2 obscure early sessions by Keith Jarrett – back to back on one CD! El Juicio is wild and wonderful work by Keith – light years away from his records on ECM! The album features a quartet that includes Dewey Redman on tenor, Charlie Haden on bass, and Paul Motian on drums – but it's clearly Keith who's driving the bus here, taking lots of odd twists and turns for playful moments that come as an unexpected surprise. One of the best of these is the short percussion track "Pre Judgement Atmosphere", which almost sounds like a Moondog number – and another is the rollingly funky "Gypsy Moth", a tune that always seems to be careening out of control, but is never "outside", just percussively grooving. Side two features two longer jamming tracks that almost have a loft jazz feel – "El Juicio" and "Piece For Ornette" – and Keith plays alone on the track "Pardon My Rags". Life Between The Exit Signs is early trio work by Keith, a bit straighter than some of his 70s recordings – but in a good way, with kind of a New York modern groove that reminds us of early work by Paul Bley or Steve Kuhn! The trio's a very progressive group – with Charlie Haden on bass and Paul Motian on drums, making for a really open-ended approach to the rhythms – and the album includes the original compositions "Church Dreams", "Margot", "Long Time Gone", and "Love No 1 & 2". Arawak, 2014. Used ... $9.99
Some of the most spiritual work we've heard from Yusef Lateef in years – a set cut with AACM legends Roscoe Mitchell and Douglas Ewart, and done with a sound that takes us back to the legendary sounds of both players in the 70s! Adam Rudolph also joins the quartet, bringing in some great percussion – and the album's a really collaborative affair, with all the musicians shifting through a wide range of instrumentation in their own spheres of expertise – at a level that recalls the work of the Art Ensemble of Chicago at their best. Lateef plays tenor, flutes, oboe, and even vocalizes a bit – as does Ewart, who along with Roscoe Mitchell plays a range of reeds and percussion instruments. ✨✧ Hank MobleyHank Mobley & His All Stars ... CD
Blue Note, 1957. Used ... $8.99
A very unique album from Hank Mobley – one that has him working alongside Milt Jackson, in an unusual format that mixes the soulful Mobley tenor with some well-crafted work on vibes! The "all star" title is certainly appropriate here – as Mobley and Jackson are joined in a quintet by Horace Silver on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – almost bringing in an early Jazz Messengers sensibility to the record, but also hitting more of a looser, laidback blowing session approach. There's less of the tightness of other Mobley sessions from the time, and the record has the players really feeling each other out in the studio – with the sort of spontaneity you might hear in a Prestige or Savoy album from the time. Tracks are long, and titles include "Ultramarine", "Don't Walk", "Lower Stratosphere", and "Mobley's Musings". CD

Ogun (UK), 2009. Used ... $7.99
Rich, vibrant work from Louis Moholo & his Unit – with resonant emotion in the overall mood, but also an improvisational approach that balances the sound very deftly! Moholo's work of the 00s has been pretty visionary, and this one's no exception – don't go expecting sentimentalism, given the title – but there is a soaring and spiritual jazz vibe, with sweeter, soulful movements. The saxes bring in some massive atmosphere, and the Francine Lune's vocals, often wordless, bring a lovely touch to some very energetic interplay. Maholo's busy on drums but peppers some vocals of his own, with Jason Yarde on soprano, alto and baritone sax, Ntshuks Bonga on alto and tenor, Pule Pheto on piano, Orphy Robinson on vibes, and John Edwards bass. Titles include "Mark Of Respect", "Dikeledi Tsa Phelo", "The Tag", "Thank U 4 2 Day", "Sonke", Russia", "Zanele", "Fine Line" and "Two Alto Hit". CD

Dreamy cosmic keys and atmospheric beats spearheaded by the brotherly duo of Dedric & Delaney Moore – working in a downtempo mode, but really kind of transcending it with some strong songwriting and soulful vocals! The synth, bass and and percussion set the scene nicely throughout, but the songs fly higher thanks in no small part to Taryn Blake Miller's, aka Your Friend's kind of avant pop/modern psych soul vocals. Charlie Parker & Dizzy GillespieBird & Diz/Jazz At Massey Hall/Diz N Bird In Concert ... CD
Not Now (UK), Late 40s/Early 50s. Used 3 CDs ... $6.99
3 albums on 3 CDs. First is Bird & Diz – a classic meeting of two giants from the early years of bop – altoist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie – brought together here in a session that Norman Granz would later list as one of the truest realizations of his vision for recording jazz music! Parker's sharp lines are a great contrast to the robust horn work of Diz – and the players work here with a rhythm section that features Thelonious Monk on piano, Curley Russell on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums. Titles include "Relaxin With Lee", "Leap Frog", "Oscar For Treadwell", and "Mohawk". Next is Jazz At Massey Hall – a legendary concert recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto, with a previously-unmatched quintet of superstar bop players: Charlie Parker on alto, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Bud Powell on piano, Charles Mingus on bass, and Max Roach on drums. The quintet runs down "Perdido", "Salt Peanuts", "All The Things You Are", "Wee", "Hot House" and "A Night In Tunisia". Also included is Diz 'N' Bird In Concert – not the famous Verve Records pairing of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker – but instead a more obscure live date from 1947, but one that really lets you hear the genius that happens when both players take the stage! The tunes have this approach that really hits at the most creative side of bop at the time – maybe even more open, expressive, and filled with larger ideas than some of the early singles that were coming out in 1947 – in a way that makes the whole thing a really important document of the complexity that was in the music, right from the start. The pair really stretch out on a fantastic two part reading of "Night In Tunisia (parts 1 & 2)", then soar through "Groovin High (parts 1 & 2)", "Confirmation", and "Dizzy Atmosphere". The second half of the set features some more live material, but just with Dizzy Gillespie in the lead, from 1953 – with Bill Graham on alto and baritone, plus a bit of vocals from Joe Carroll. Titles include "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac" and "Tin Tin Deo". CD

PlebDon't Break EP – No Mercy/Sufigitano/Toast Me/Wally Dub ... 12-inch
Giant Step, 2003. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A nice little selection of tripped-out, Eastern-tinged club bounce from Pleb! "No Mercy" kicks off with distantly clapping bongos and percussion, and Shankar style Eastern strings before a heavy electric drum punch presses the whole thing into club mode. "Sufigitano" is a bit heavier on the acoustic percussion, and flows from a lighter tribal groove into a synthy bubbling bass and programmed beat. On the flip, "Toast Me" switches hemispheres for a much more dubby reggae-inflected vibe, which segues into the similar "Wally Dub", which is a bit mellower and smokier of a number, with some psych-synth touches blending in with a more organic feel and some supremely funky thumping. Overall a pretty nice mix of earthy vibes and programmed touches! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Sun RaContinuation (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Saturn/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1963. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Mindblowing music from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – sounds recorded during the same marathon session that gave the world the records Other Planes Of There, When Sun Comes Out, and When Angels Speak Of Love – but titles that are much more obscure overall! The initial release of the material featured very misleading notes, but the true details of the session are even more impressive – as Ra plays a variety of unusual instruments alongside piano – including the piano strings, space organ, and clavioline – alongside some sublime straight horn work from John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and oboe, Pat Patrick on baritone, Danny Davis on alto and clarinet, Walter Miller on trumpet, Robert Cummings on bass clarinet, and Ali Hasaan on trombone! The lineup here has that raw power the Arkestra first unleashed after their initial move to New York – almost a sense of new freedom in the new environment – even at a time when they weren't clicking on a financial level, but still continued to push forward with new ideas in music! Some passages have this great approach that links the cosmic ideas of the Arkestra with older traditions of jazz soloing – while others reflect the growing concern of the group with new textures and sounds – making for some very impressive elements on both the horns and percussion. The group is completed by Ronnie Boykins on bass, Art Jenkins on space voice and percussion, and Tommy Hunter on drums, percussion, and some mighty nice reverb – and titles include "Biosphere Blues", "Intergalactic Research", "Earth Primitive Earth", "New Planet", and "Continuation To Jupiter Festival". Beautiful 2CD reissue features sublime sounds from the original tapes, remastered – plus a full bonus CD of unreleased tracks that include "Blue York", "Conversation Of The Universe", "Red Planet Mars", "Cosmic Rays/Next Stop Mars", "The Myth", "Meteor Shower", "Infinity", "The Beginning Of", and "Endlessness". One of Sun Ra's best non-Saturn live sets of the 70s – a nice little record that shows the group mixing it up with equal parts avant garde and straight ahead jazz, all handled in that ever-growing large group style that made them a real force to be reckoned with in a concert setting! The album was recorded during the 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival, and has a bit more focus and polish than some of the other Arkestra live material from the time – a mature, coherent sound that almost points the way towards some of their work to come in the 80s – when Ra and the group were finally reaching the wider audience they deserved. The set's a double-length one, and features players who include John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, Pat Patrick on baritone, Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, Craig Harris on trombone, and James Jackson on Ancient Egyptian Infinity drum – which is always a treat. Ra plays solar organ and moog, as well as piano – and titles include "Of The Other Tomorrow", "On Sound Infinity Spheres", "El Is The Sound Of Joy", "Gods Of The Thunder Realm", "Gods Of A Thunder Realm", "The House Of Eternal Being", and "Lights On a Satellite". Experimental mastery from Terry Riley – a live recording captured in Paris in 1978 – at a point when he was working in a realm of his own invention, leading up to his benchmark Shri Camel LP! Riley is working here with his Yamaha portable combo organ that he had modified – feeding stereo signals into the digital delay. We'll spare you any more technical jargon, as what's important is the aural atmosphere, and it's a heavy one! There's always a pillow of droning organ tones at the outer edges, chiming bits on the fringes, and Middle East inspired accents at the core, the most linear connection to the coming Shri Camel album. The mood builds from start to finish – and the sound is amazing for a live recording! 10 untitled pieces and it runs pretty close to an hour. CD

Amazing early work from Sonny Rollins – the first of his tremendous Blue Note albums – and a record that really shows him taking off at the time! The record captures Rollins at a key turning point – emerging from his firey bop years, moving into a much more complicated, introspective tenor style that was a perfect showcase for his developing genius for improvisation – not as far out as in a few years to come, but already awash in imagination and creativity. The group here includes Donald Byrd on trumpet, Wynton Kelly on piano, Gene Ramey on bass, and Max Roach on drums – but as with all Rollins Blue Note sessions, his tenor is the dominant force. Scott is on trumpet, his custom sirenette & reverse fluegelhorn, mixing earth-bound sounds and spacey atmosphere throughout – and the band includes Braxton Cook on alto, Lawrence Fields on piano and Rhodes, Corey King on trombone, and Corey Fonville and Joe Dyson Jr on a pretty impressive mix of drums and sampler atmosphere. It starts off strong with "Sunrise In Beijing", an impressive showcase for flautist Elena Pinderhughes, who really helps this one take flight over the spacey & stuttering percussion. Jimmy SmithWho's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? ... LP
Verve, 1964. Very Good Gatefold ... $8.99
A real treasure, and a record that may well be our favorite Jimmy Smith album for Verve – a masterful meeting of his smoking Hammond work with some swingingly sophisticated arrangements by Oliver Nelson and Claus Ogerman! Both Nelson and Ogerman bring a fuller spectrum of horn work to the album than heard on other Smith sides of the time – using an almost orchestral approach to the backings, one that pushes Jimmy even further into the stratosphere as he solos madly on the organ! But don't think that the larger backings are clunky at all – because they're not – and there's a surprisingly deep soul to all the proceedings on the album, making it one of the tightest, grooviest, and deeply soulful records that Jimmy cut after leaving Blue Note! The LP includes two very long cuts – killer versions of "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf" and "Slaughter On 10th Avenue" – plus shorter takes on "Bluesette", "Women Of The World", and "Wives & Lovers" that are all plenty amazing too! SupremesBit Of Liverpool ... LP
Motown, 1964. Very Good ... $19.99
It's always interesting to note the way that Berry Gordy tried to move Motown out of the ghetto of US soul indies, by attempting various moves to realign the music with other spheres bigger than the scope of Detroit soul. Sometimes these moves were clear "loss leaders" that wouldn't necessarily pay off as strongly as when Motown were acting in normal hit fashion, but which would have a larger effect in broadening the appeal of the groups. Such is an album like this, in which The Supremes strangely sing hits of the British Invasion – like "How Do You Do It", "You Can't Do That", "House Of The Rising Sun", and "I Want To Hold Your Hand" – nearly all of which are done in fairly rock-heavy versions that sound nothing like the group's bigger soul hits of the time. It's hard to imagine that such an album would appeal to either the group's regular fans or those who liked true British rock, but perhaps that's also why the record features a version of The Contours "Do You Love Me" and The Miracles' "You've Really Got A Hold Of Me" who are also listed in the notes as being part of the "male group" phenomenon that is really what the Brit invasion was about. Thrill Jockey, 2004. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 27.99
Wow, this is SO not the Tortoise that first set the underground aflame in the early 90s – the group has evolved and opened up in ways we never would have expected. With It's All Around You it's emerged with an airy, open, stargazing set of tracks that resemble the languid atmosphere of Tangerine Dream as much as they do early post rock! Gone, for the most part from early Tortoise is that strong, rubbery electric bass groove and tightly thudding live drum sound. It's All Around You retains the bright vibes and sputtering electronics of the TNT album, and the out front, almost rock & roll guitar lines of the Standards album – and adds an ever present, ambient synthesizer bubble of sound to surround the thing. It's all so catchy, too, and almost sunny. If Tortoise hasn't really broken any new ground this time, it's only because they're the ones who broke it in the first place. Amazing East African recordings from decades long past – a 2LP vinyl entry for the most beautifully put together compilations of any kind on Honest Jons in quite a while – which is really something, given their always top tier efforts! Bellyachers, Listen – Songs From East Africa, 1936-46 features the earlier material included on the 2CD Something Is Wrong compilation of recordings made in Uganda and Kenya from the 30s to the 50s – some wildly energetic, fast and feverishly performed, others with more lilting melodies and less fraught atmosphere. Theresa/Temposphere (Italy), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $24.99 29.99
A lost batch of soulful jazz from a massively overlooked source – the mighty Theresa Records, home to some really great recordings at the end of the 70s! Theresa was a tiny company formed in Oakland, CA at the end of the 70s – a spiritual heir to the sound of Impulse, Flying Dutchman, and other 70s powerhouse soul jazz labels – with a sound that was directly encapsulated in the label's own recordings of Pharoah Sanders at the time! After a few years of inactivity on the recording scene after his seminal sides for Impulse, Pharoah made a strong re-emergence on Theresa – working in a sweet style of soul jazz that was also picked up by some of the label's other strong artists. This excellent set was compiled in collaboration with Gilles Peterson – and features some of the hippest, most soulful tracks to come out on Theresa – work that takes off from the sound of Pharoah's earlier albums, into a whole new realm of expression! Titles include "Heart Is A Melody", "Rejoice", and "You've Got To Have Freedom" by Pharoah Sanders; "Samba" and "Pippin" by Ed Kelly; "Use Your Hands" and "Levels Of Consciousness" by Babatunde & Phenomena; and "Hip Funk" by Bishop Norman Williams & The One Mind Experience. 9 tracks on 2LPs! ✨✧ Dave BrubeckTime Changes ... LP
Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most obscure of Brubeck's Columbia modern sessions – and one of the best! Side one features more "time" oriented tunes played with the Quartet that included Paul Desmond, Eugene Wright, and Joe Morello – but side two features the extended "Elementals" work, written for the quartet with jazz orchestra conducted by Rayburn Wright. Desmond's alto is fantastic on that track – floating, eerie, and quite sophisticatedly swinging – and the others ("Cable Car", "Iberia", "Shim Wha", and "Unisphere") are all strong examples of the quartet's simple genius. ✨✧ Cloud One & OthersFlying High – Patrick Adams P&P Masters ... CD
P&P/Octave (Japan), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous grooves from one of the coolest club labels of all time – the legendary P&P family of labels, home to some of the weirdest, wildest, most experimental tracks to ever hit the dancefloor – yet all tracks that are pretty darn funky too! This 2CD collection is heavy on cuts from Cloud One – one of the most well-known P&P acts, often working with weird moogy electronics over funky club rhythms – a combination that still sounds as fantastic now as when Patrick Adams got the group going way back when – especially in the company of some of the other cool cuts that are on the collection too. Cloud One tracks include "Music Funk", "Funky Track", "Disco Juice", "Dust To Dust", "Spaced Out", "Charleston Hopscotch", "Atmosphere Strut (parts 1 & 2)", "Doin It All Night Long", "Jump Jump Jump", "Flying High (part 1)", "Patty Duke", "Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By", "Atmosphere Strut (1979 rmx – part 2)", and "Happy Music" – and other tracks include "God's Greatest Gift To Man Is A Woman" by Marie Lomax, "My Baby's Got ESP (orig 7" mix)" by Four Below Zero, "The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us" by Golden Flamingo Orchestra, "Dance Dance Dance (disco version)" by Maria Acuna, "God Save & Protect Children" by Margo Williams, "Ain't Gonna Be A Next Time (short version)" by Magnetic Touch, and "It's Rough (dub)" by The Imperial Three. ✨✧ Booker ErvinThat's It (Barnaby pressing) ... LP
Candid/Barnaby, 1961. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tremendous non-Prestige moment from tenorist Booker Ervin – one of his first albums ever as a leader, and a record that bristles with 60s modern energy! The group here is only a quartet – with Horace Parlan on piano – and the album's got Booker's amazing tenor right out front, played with those angular, searching tones that are heard most famously on the Space and Freedom Book sessions for Prestige – but which seem to get almost more room for expression here! The remaining players are George Tucker on bass and Al Harewood on drums – both of whom help the album maintain a nicely rhythmic pulse, even when Ervin is going off into the stratosphere – and the album features 4 original tunes – "Mojo", "Uranus", "Boo", and "Booker's Blues" – plus versions of "Speak Low" and "Poinciana". ✨✧ FunkadelicLet's Take It To The Stage ... LP
Westbound, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tasty little album from Funkadelic – one that has Bootsy Collins joining the group, and really hitting the unique approach that would become the definitive P-Funk groove! And although tracks are shorter and even more focused, there's still a fair bit of guitar in the set – keeping the trademark Funkadelic sound in place, to set them aside from from the growing horn-heavy Parliament groove. Yet in both groups' work at the time, there's a growing emphasis on the rhythms at the bottom – a pulling up of the basslines in a way that was no doubt influenced by Bootsy's presence, and which would have a key influence on the sound of funk for years to come! Includes the massively infectious funk track "Get Off Your Ass and Jam", plus "Let's Take It To The Stage", "Be My Beach", "Baby I Owe You Something Good", "The Song Is Familiar", "No Head No Backstage Pass", "Atmosphere", "Stuffs & Things", and "Better By the Pound". The last and possibly the best album by Galaxie 500! The group's ether-like melodies, reverb atmosphere and plaintive vocals are at their best on This Is Our Music – a high water mark of late 80s/early 90s US indie rock and genuine precursor to later shoegaze sounds that would make bigger, if briefly shining stars from the the US and UK scenes. Titles include "Fourth Of July", "Hearing Voices", "Spook", "Summertime", "Way Up High", their cover of Yoko Ono's "Listen, The Snow Is Falling", "Sorry", "Melt Away" and "King Of Spain Pt 2". Whitfield, 1977. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of a number groups that Norman Whitfield was working with during the late 70s – the most famous of which was Rose Royce, and perhaps the least famous of which was Nytro. The group's got a sound that's similar to Rose Royce, with a mix of male and female vocals, and a basic style that's mostly funky soul, but which sounds even better on the ballads. The album's got a great spacey electric ballad called "Dreaming", which could have been lifted off of one of the early albums by RR – and it's got a number of bass-heavy funk numbers like "Atmosphere", "Trick Bag", "What It Is", and "Atomic Funk". ✨✧ Charlie ParkerOne Night In Birdland ... LP
Columbia, 1950. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare live material from Charlie Parker – recorded in the very familiar territory of the Birdland nightclub, but not issued until an LP release from the 70s! The material originally was broadcast on radio, but through the series of the Rose transcription disc archive – which meant better recording and preservation than most other radio material of the bop years – helping to make this album a real treasure among Bird fans in the years after his death. The lineup is a very tight bop-based one – with Fats Navarro on trumpet, Bud Powell on piano, and Art Blakey on bass. Chubby Newsome adds vocals to "Embraceable You" – and the rest of the set includes "Wahoo", "Round Midnight", "This Time The Dream's On Me", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "A Night In Tunisia", "Move", "The Street Beat", "Out Of Nowhere", "Little Willie Leaps", "Ornithology", "I'll Remember April", and "Cool Blues/52nd St Theme". ✨✧ Sun RaAstro Black ... CD
Impulse/Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the darkest Sun Ra albums of the early 70s – and a set that's also a bit unusual in his catalog as well! The album was issued during Ra's run with Impulse Records – a period that mostly saw the label reissue previous records from the Saturn catalog – save for a rare few like this one, which was an unusual all-new batch of material for Impulse! Because of that, it's been a bit overlooked in later years – maybe missed as less authentic, but actually some of the most striking sounds that Ra created at the time! There's a very strong tension here between electric and acoustic elements – not in the usual fusion-based way, but instead with this vibe that often has the electric instruments providing darker areas of sound, while the woodwinds and percussion have a way of humanizing the proceedings. June Tyson's also at her moodiest on the title track, "Astro Black" – and other titles include "Hidden Spheres", "Discipline 99", and the long improvisation "Cosmo Fire". CD

✨✧ Piero Umiliani (Rovi)Pianofender Blues ... LP
Omicron/Dialogo (Italy), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great set of keyboard work from the legendary Piero Umiliani – and one that's definitely heavy on the Fender Rhodes promised in the title! Piero first started out with a more jazz-based sound in the 60s, and that definitely returns here – but updated nicely with a sweet set of 70s electric keys – used here in ways that move between funky jazz, gentler bossa numbers, and a whole range of other styles that fit very nicely on the groovier side of the sound library spectrum! As with most of Umiliani's music during the decade, this album wasn't commercially released at all – just done as a sound library session under the name of Rovi – but pure Piero all the way through, on titles that include "Medium Cool", "Honey Moon", "Jolly", "Pianofender Blues", "Proposal", "Good Job", "Dark Blues", and "Atmosphere". The first all new, all original effort from Bitchin Bajas in a few years finds the group's core synth-driven vibe just as hypnotic, but more expansive than ever! The tracks are all on the longer side, and have this beautiful way of working in subtle shifts in sound and texture that build up, ease back and ultimately evolve from starting base layer of bells, chimes and vibes-y soundscapes. The core trio of Cooper Crain, Rob Frye and Daniel Quinlivan are joined by Mike Reed, Nori Tanaka and Rex McMurry on cymbals and drums that nicely add to atmosphere – and the titles include "Amorpha", "Geomancy", "World B Free" and "Quackenbruck". Moody genius from Can – and one of the greatest albums of its time! Tons of spooky spare atmosphere, vocals that go from a lull to a cathartic echoey shriek, and that rollicking and propulsive backbeat that makes Can a band for the ages. Not just a landmark in what was to be dubbed Krautrock – truly an indispensable masterpiece regardless of genre, and a record so influential to so many movements in underground music that it is really impossible to imagine the world without it. Timeless! Tracks include "Paperchase", "Mushroom", "Oh Yeah", "Halleluwah", "Aumgn", "Peking O", and "Bring Me Coffee Or Tea". Expanded 2CD version features previously-unreleased live tracks from 1972 – 3 really long tunes that include a 30 minute workout on "Spoon", plus "Halleluwah" and "Mushroom", both in nice extended takes! ✨✧ Cloud OneSpaced Out – The Best Of Cloud One ... CD
P&P, Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Classic work from the legendary P&P Records label – created by one of the "P" talents who gave them their name – studio genius Patrick Adams, who mostly works here on his own under the name of Cloud One! Adams already had great success working with east coast soul groups in the first half of the 70s – and as Cloud One, he really finds his way around the more cutting-edge styles of the time – mixing bits of funk with bits of disco, and often adding in these cool electronic elements that really helped define the P&P sound! Many cuts have cool moogy keyboards, and some spacey elements along the edges – done with a lot more soul than some of the Euro space disco recordings of the same time – with much more of a tie to the New York underground that was Adams' main milieu. Titles include the classics "Spaced Out" and "Atmosphere Strut" – plus "Jump Jump Jump", "Stomp Your Feet & Dance", "Disco Juice", "Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By", "Patty Duke", "Happy Music", "Doin It All Night", and "Flyin High". Vintage Vibez, Late 80s/1990s/2000s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A killer compilation of rare Dilla instrumentals that hones in on his electronic-influenced side! It's the first time his archives have been mined with this sharp of a focus – but Dilla being the diverse cat that he was, it's STILL got a incredible stylistic sprawl! The beats are head nodding, soul steeped and insistent as can be, and that keeps it grounded in mesmerising, unpretentious hip hop throughout – but with lots of room for spacey synth atmosphere, spare bits of cosmic keys, bouncing electro funk accents and other touches. A nice exploration of rare instrumentals from his archives as we've seen in a single set – 41 untitled tracks running about 70 minutes all together, and it STILL leaves us wanting more. Compiled by Detroit DJs Alien Villainz, for Ma Dukes and the Dilla estate. LP, Vinyl record album

BGP (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
One of the deepest-digging entries in the Super Funk series so far – a blistering batch of underground singles that serve up some of the roughest funk of their generation! We'll be honest in saying that we'd only heard a few of the tracks here before – and our hats are off to BGP for taking this already-great series and making it go even deeper – far past familiar funk classics that usually get showcased on the label, and much more into the realm of the crate-digging underground, or the ebay-rarity stratosphere! A handful of cuts here are previously unreleased – never even issued on wax back in the day – and the rest are all pretty darn hard to find too, and all plenty darn great from a musical perspective. The package features a whopping 21 tracks in all – including a rare 1970 funky remake of "Twine Time" by Alvin Cash, plus "Home Brew" by Miles Grayson, "Just Sitting" by Smithstonian, "Can't Get Enough" by 87th Off Broadway, "Hi Off Life" by Eternal Flames, "Give Me Another Chance" by The Uniques, "Hold On" by Lorenzo Holden, "Free The Soul Man" by La May & Company, "Little Boy Blue" by The Phillips Brothers, "You'd Be Good For Me" by Jeanette Jones, "Who Done It? Who Drained The Pool?" by Big Daddy Green, "Low Rider (Deuce & A Quarter)" by Smokey Wilson, "Can't Buy Soul" by Hebrew Rogers, "Shake A Leg" by Jackie Wilson, "Face To Face" by The Explosions, and "Turn Around & Go" by Lee Bernard. Drag City, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from guitarist Oren Ambarchi – a little more expansive than his preceding effort on Drag City, thanks to larger group and a wider range of instrumentation, while building on what loved about it! The style is tough to pin down in the best kind of way, with strains of improvisational jazz and hypnotic minimalism, but a unique melodic drive that's as compelling as it is tough to cleanly categorize. Collaborators this time include returning Swedish jazz bassist Johan Berthling, drummer Joe Talia, a second guitarist in Julia Reidy, Sam Dunscombe on bass clarinet – and for extra otherworldly, yet melodic atmosphere is some synth by Jim O'Rourke and pedal steel by BJ Cole on a couple of tracks. The whole Shebang is a 4 part set – each track running long, to give it a nice amount of space to build up, settle down, and flow into the next – and numbered 1 to 4. CD

Warp, 2012. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The best yet from Flying Lotus – who we keep allowing ourselves to believe has hit an insurmountable peak with each new record – but he just keeps getting better! Where the preceding Cosmogramma upped the stranger, spacier and more abstract textures, Until The Quiet Comes is a bit more inviting – and to his credit, Flying Lotus keeps things as innovative as ever, while still giving this one just a bit more immediately appealing atmosphere. There's nearly always a compelling beat, whether it's abstract boom bap or bubbly and synthy, with heavy bass and thick waves of sound floating over. An incredible roster of guests contribute, too – including string-arranger Miguel Atwood Ferguson, vocalists Erykah Badu, Laura Darlington and Radiohead's Thom Yorke, keyboardist Dorian Concept, and others – but there's little doubt that this is purely the Flying Lotus show. Greatness! Titles include "All In", "Sultan's Request", "See Thru To U" with Erykah Badu, "DMT Song" with Thundercat, "The Nightcaller", "Only If You Wanna", "Electric Candyman" with Thom Yorke, "Hunger" with Niki Randa, "Phantasm" with Laura Darlington, "Dream To Me" and more. A lost funky soul LP by Starfire, billed here as "The Baddest Five Stars in the Galaxy", and hailing from Richmond, VA! This is a silver-covered repressing of the band's second album – done on the obscure Dynamic Artists label in Virginia – and it's a great collection of the group's early work, cut back at a time when they were soaring along on a strong Earth Wind & Fire vibe – mixing up funk and soulful ballads nicely! There's some good spacey production touches that further enforce the "star" quality of their name – pushing things slightly into the stratosphere, in a way that sets them apart. The "Brian" in the title is Brian Eno – as you might guess from that image from Another Green World in the middle of the cover – but the sound of this set is quite different than what you might expect! CD1 imagines the sounds that Eno would talk about informing the music of his youth – tracks that showed up often on jukeboxes stocked to service visiting American GIs, which meant that the were full of raw soul, R&B, and even a bit of jazz – elements that most folks wouldn't tie to Eno, but which you can definitely hear here in arranging and production elements that would show up on his early solo vocal music, and some of the Roxy Music sounds too. Titles include work by The Tokens, Paradons, Lafayettes, Little Willie John, Dinah Washington, Ernie K Doe, Raymond Scott, The Cosmic Rays, Moondog, and Leadbelly. CD2 features more modern moments – a mix of avant jazz, early electronics, and 20th century compositions that tie a more direct link to the ambient universe – titles that include "Dream" by John Cage, "Come Back To Earth With Me" by Louis & Bebe Barron, "Atmospheres (excerpt)" by Gyorgy Ligeti, "Sleepy Time" by Raymond Scott, "Fordommelse" by Elsa Marie Pade, "Rhythmic Variations 1" by Daphne Oram, "Low Speed (excerpt)" by Otto Lueninng, "Ignition" by Tom Dissevelt, "Ectoplasm" by Raymond Scott, and "The Bewitched (Scene 1)" by Harry Partcy.
