SphereComplete Live At Umbria Jazz (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Red (Italy), 1986. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $52.99 59.99
A killer combo – caught live, and playing some nicely extended tracks that really let all players do their thing! Sphere's in top formation here – snapping along with great rhythms from Kenny Barron on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Ben Riley on drums – and getting some wickedly sharp tenor help from Charlie Rouse – who blows here both with some of the modern edges forged during his years with Monk, and some of the deeper soul he picked up in later stretches. Barron's piano is sharper than usual too – still with some of the lyricism we know from his own records, but a bit more bite overall – definitely a great match for Rouse's horn. Titles include "Saud's Song", "Christina", "Tokudo", and "Deceptakon" – plus "Pumpkins Delight" and "If I Should Lose You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SphereSphere On Tour ... CD
Red (Italy), 1985. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer live set from this cool 80s combo – a later showcase for the mighty tenor talents of Charlie Rouse, working alongside Kenny Barron on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Ben Riley on drums! The setting's easily one of the best that Rouse had in his later years – a format that allowed him to really stretch out on tenor in new, soulful ways – moving past the more familiar modes of the Monk years and his earlier hardbop sides – still steeped in tradition, but with a freshly creative tone. Barron is great, as you might expect – and the sensitive Red Records production really presents the whole group in their best light. Titles include "Scratch", "Dual Force", "Spiral", "Tayamisha", and "Beautiful Friendship". CD

FluxusFluxus Newspaper ... Book
Primary Information, 2024. New Copy ... $13.99 20.00
A totally cool book – one that offers up full-size reproductions of the eleven different newspapers published by the legendary Fluxus art group in the 60s and the 70s! If you know Fluxus, you know that they're not just artists, but tricksters as well – a group dedicated to causing slight disruptions in the public sphere through their creative activity – in ways that are sometimes subtle or whimsical, but which have a larger challenge to power behind them. That's definitely the case here with their newspapers – sporadic publications that sometimes take on the look of a more conventional paper, sometimes have a more artistic approach – and which take the format to offer unique takes on culture and society, but in the inventive approaches of the artists. Between them, the issues feature work by over 60 artists – including La Monte Young, Joseph Beuys, Christo, Alice Hutchins, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, Gyorgy Ligeti, Yoko Ono, and others – all serve up here on oversized black and white pages, but in a much more durable format than the original papers. Free-flowing melodic sketches from a very hip group – a trio who work in all the best mixed-up, genre-crossing modes of the MPS label in the 70s! Some tracks have a fuller fusion-based approach, while others are more laidback and open-ended – working in a mixed electric/acoustic sphere of sonic exploration! ✨✧ VariousBali – Gamelan & Kecak Recorded In Bali By David Lewiston ... CD
Nonesuch, 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best CDs of gamelan music you could hope to find! While not as straightly ethnographic as some of the other gamelan CDs on the market, this selection of 9 tracks recorded in Bali is some of the most compelling work we've ever heard on the instrument. Engineer David Lewiston does an excellent job of addressing the key elements of different gamelan groupings, and he paces the record with an energy that really keeps things fresh – shifting moods at just the right moment, showing all the strong strands of playing that run through the Balinese gamelan sphere, which is often much harder edged than that of Java. The CD runs for quite a long time, and the music is otherworldly in a way we can't even describe! CD

One of the holy grails of the Spaced Out club music scene! Patrick Adams produced and arranged (and wrote and probably performed) this stunning set of spacey club grooves with a cool electronic feel, and a nice sense of mid to up-tempo rhythms. Includes the classic "Atmospheric Strut", one of the moogiest tracks around, plus the classics "Spaced Out" and "Disco Juice". All cuts are great, though, and the album's also got a good soul sound that often gets overlooked, especially on the cut "Doin' It All Night Long". A great one, and on the rare P&P label! A really classic session – one that features an all-star lineup of players who were in the Dizzy Gillespie band of the mid 50s – stepping out here in a smaller group on their own for a one-off date on the Specialty Records label! Specialty normally recorded R&B at the time, but they knock it out of the park with this one – really letting the players stretch out with lots of soulful energy – in a lineup that includes the young Lee Morgan on trumpet, Al Grey on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul West on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – plus the fantastic Billy Root on baritone – a really great player who only recorded a bit back in the day! Arrangements are nice and hip – done by Benny Golson and Roger Spotts – and titles include "About Time", "DDT", "Whisper Not", and the very long "Dishwater" – a nice uptempo workout, Dizzy style! CD

A duo who really take the hemispheres in their title seriously – as lyrics and vocals are all by Otis Junior, and the album's spare rhythms and instrumentation are from Dr Dundee! Otis is a hell of a frontman – as he's got this laidback, raspy style that really fits the open, honest quality of his words – lyrics that are spacily spoken as much as they're sung – in this haunting style that really fits the crispy core elements provided by the doctor. The duo are surprisingly strong together – really supporting each other in the best way, and not lapsing into too-familiar beats-n-lyrics cliches – on titles that include "Hemispheres", "Bubble", "Why Can't You Just Come For Conversation", "The Mixture", "3 Winds", "Bye From Space", and "Under My Skin", which features a guest appearance by Jim James. Funk Night, 2024. New Copy ... $16.99 21.99
The spacey sound of the title definitely gets the groove right here – as the funky currents of the great Misha Panfilov are trained on some more cosmic elements than usual – almost as if his group here is trying for the sort of territory you might expect from Sun Ra! The music has lots of cool electric piano and electronics, but these are mixed with great horn work on tenor, flute, and trumpet – with plenty of percussion layered underneath – all with this great blend of earthy elements and more skyward-leaning sounds – maybe not entirely in the territory of Ra and the Arkestra, but definitely a jazzy exploration of the cosmos! A very dynamic set from bassist Jason Roebke – a set that uses graphic scores to direct improvsations by the members of the quartet, who are a very tightly-matched group of players, very able to deliver on Roebke's musical vision! The lineup features some especially great work on clarinet and saxes from Ed Wilkerson – a player we haven't heard as much of in recent years, but who still has the bright fire and imagination that first made us fall in love with his bold music decades ago – and the group also features lots of dark-tinged piano from Mabel Kwan, a player whose depth offsets Wilkerson's energy beautifully. The group also features Marcus Evans on drums, a player who can shake things up in all the right ways – on titles that include "Pulse & Tone", "Quarter Note Equals Eighty", "Stability & Coda", "Piano Spacer", "Four Spheres", and "Starting & Stopping". Greenleaf, 2020. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Dave Douglas works here in a group with two trumpets – Dave Adewumi on the other horn in the lead, but playing with a voice that's deeply distinct from the leader! The group's got that sort of fresh approach that seems to make each different record by Douglas a very different project – and the rest of the lineup includes Matt Stevens on guitar, Fabian Almazan on piano, Carmen Rothwell on bass, and Joey Baron on drums – building things up slowly, but in this way that sometimes has them circling the two trumpets, sometimes coming together more directly. The album's got a subtitle of "Dizzy Gillespie at zero gravity" – and oddly, that's a bit of the feel of the record. Titles include "Con Almazan", "Cadillac", "Manteca", "Mondrian", "We Pray", "Pickin The Cabbage", and "See Me Now". CD

✨✧ Keith JarrettHymns/Spheres ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1976. Used 2CD Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very unusual record – one that has Keith Jarrett playing some solo organ – and a baroque organ at that – but in ways that are quite different than you might expect! The sounds here are amazing – almost noisy at points, as Jarrett really works the instrument in an exploration of textures and tones, less in a pursuit of melody – so what might initially look like one of Jarrett's neo-classical recordings is instead one of his most experimental – especially as the set moves on! "Hymn Of Remembrance" initiates the album – with a slightly sentimental quality – but Keith then shifts into his nine-part "Spheres" suite – which is full of amazing textures and sounds! And unlike the previous CD version, this one includes all the material on the original 2LP set! CD

Slug rhymes like a storyteller, in his prime when weaving songs of demented heartbreak, his voice pushes forth in a tortured singing style, hook friendly, ironic, and angry (dude still hasn't gotten over Lucy). Ant does all the production, with some dubby beats, some nice spidery piano loops, some drums are a little more quirky and off kilter (in a good way) than his previous work. 18 tracks in all, including "Onemosphere", "The Bass And The Movement", "F#ck You Lucy", the creepy anthem "God Loves Ugly", "Saves The Day", "Vampires", "Modern Man's Hustle", "Blamegame" and "Shrapnel". Unity/Numero, 1978. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Spacey piano work from Jordan De La Sierra – material that's clearly informed by the 60s experiments of La Monte Young and Terry Riley, but which also has a more open, spiritual quality too! The piano has a nice sense of tuning – one that's almost watery at points – and Jordan's in no rush to let the notes unfold, as he often waits for one to resonate out before starting the next – which creates this very spacious, meditative quality throughout – a mode that's also inspired by Indian music, but much more laidbck and North California! The package reproduces the original 2LP set – complete with artwork and original notes. CD

The debut set from Atmosphere – and a real standard-setting album that points the way towards future success, while still having a nicely gritty vibe! There's more here that might tie the record to the sound of New York than later Atmosphere work – starker beats, less warmth in the other sounds, and rhymes that are maybe a bit more in your face than the personal moments that Slug would later deliver. ✨✧ AtmosphereSeven's Travels (10th Anniversary Edition) ... LP
Rhymesayers/Epitaph, 2003. Near Mint- 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Atmosphere returns wielding their signature sound full force! What they've come out with this round is by far their most experimental – definitely fresher and more distinct than the "safety" of God Loves Ugly. Slug bounces along melodically, tortured and true to his nature, yet he comes off a little (just a little) more optimistic this time and he recites more than just tales of love lost. He STILL is at his tightest when weaving wonderful heart-wrenching stories instead of bragging, yet I don't think you hear the name Lucy once on this album. Sean Daley, the philosopher? – maybe we'll see more and more of that in the future. ANT's production is sounding much much better since God Loves Ugly – these beats pound just a little harder, seemingly influenced by punk rock, seventies rock, and folk rock (any rock). There still is a whole lotta soul in there, which is very nice, yet he still ain't afraid to pitch the formula, say sample some off kilter scatting or a ripping metal guitar. Tracks include "Bird Sings Why The Caged I Know", "Cats Van Bags", "National Disgrace", "Liquor Lyles Cool July". "Good Times", "Keys To Life Vs 15 Minutes Of Fame", "Reflections" and more. Virgin, 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
An airy, atmospheric classic from Brian Eno – as you might guess from the title – a record that fits in very strongly with his initial Ambient series of albums, but which was also used to accompany a documentary film on the Apollo space flights! Despite that soundtrack use, though, the work is far more Eno than anything else – hardly cinematic in the conventional sense, and shaped nicely with help from Roger Eno and Daniel Lanois, both key collaborators in the decade. Some of the richer tracks almost preface a 4AD generation to come, but still have all the best Eno charms – and titles include "Under Stars", "The Secret Place", "Matta", "Signals", "An Ending (Ascent)", "Under Stars II", "Drift", "Silver Morning", "Deep Blue Day", "Weightless", "Always Returning", and "Stars". Horace Silver's last record for Blue Note – and an amazing end to his decades of work for the legendary label! The set's a perfect summation of all the new directions that Horace took in the 70s – new territory that's deeply spiritual, and undeniably righteous – yet which also has a fully focused approach too – one that's showcased here wonderfully in an expansive suite of tracks with a really positive message! The "strings" in the title isn't really accurate – as the set's more of a large arrangement session that feels Strata East spiritual – done in collaboration with Wade Marcus, but with jazzier, more acoustic tones than most of Marcus' other music. In addition to Silver's piano, key core players include Tom Harrell on flugelhorn, Larry Schneider on tenor and soprano sax, Ron Carter on bass, and Al Foster on drums – who play beautifully together, with a very fluid vibe. The set also features some key vocal passages at points – sung by Brenda Alford, Chapman Roberts, Carol Lynn Maillard, and a young Gregory Hines – on titles that include "The Soul & Its Expression", "Self Portrait No 1", "The Conscious & Its Desire For Change", "Inner Feelings", "Expansion", and "The Creator Guides Us". Oren AmbarchiShebang (with poster & download) ... LP
Drag City, 2022. New Copy ... $23.99 29.99
Wonderful work from guitarist Oren Ambarchi – a little more expansive than his preceding effort on Drag City, thanks to larger group and a wider range of instrumentation, while building on what loved about it! The style is tough to pin down in the best kind of way, with strains of improvisational jazz and hypnotic minimalism, but a unique melodic drive that's as compelling as it is tough to cleanly categorize. Collaborators this time include returning Swedish jazz bassist Johan Berthling, drummer Joe Talia, a second guitarist in Julia Reidy, Sam Dunscombe on bass clarinet – and for extra otherworldly, yet melodic atmosphere is some synth by Jim O'Rourke and pedal steel by BJ Cole on a couple of tracks. The whole Shebang is a 4 part set – each track running long, to give it a nice amount of space to build up, settle down, and flow into the next – and numbered 1 to 4. LP, Vinyl record album

Kenny BarronWhat If? ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1986. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99 About December 18, 2024
Although Kenny Barron's always a heck of a great musician on his own or in a piano trio, we're especially partial to his work in groups with horn players – and this album is a great example of that preference! Kenny first came to fame working with Dizzy Gillespie in the 60s, and since that point, he's always had a tremendous ear for the right tones and shadings from horns needed to augment his own soulful vision on the keys – a way of setting up the other players in the group to build on the well-crafted Barron lines, and take them even further into the stratosphere. This set follows that format, and draws great energy from Wallace Roney on trumpet and John Stubblefield on tenor – both at their younger best, and working alongside Kenny's piano with Cecil McBee on bass and Victor Lewis on drums. The lineup sparkles most on the 4 longer Barron numbers on the album – "Phantoms", "What If", "Voyage", and "Lullabye" – all of which take us back to the brilliance of Kenny's best Muse albums of the 70s. Other tracks feature smaller, more piano-centrist groupings – on tracks that include "Dexterity", "Close To You Alone", and "Trinkle Trinkle". CD

✨✧ Be Bop DeluxeLive In The Air Age ... CD
EMI/Harvest (UK), 1977. Used ... $9.99
The "air" here might well refer to the charged atmosphere in the arena during the live show that makes up this set from Be Bop Deluxe – a nice summation of everything that Bill Nelson and the group had done on their studio classics from the mid 70s, maybe stripped-down here a bit away from the studio! Yet somehow, the music also has that wonderful sense of compression that the group always got – a way of layering the sound at a level that's maybe post-glam, pre-punk, and without some of the fuller trappings of ELO, with more of a focus on the guitar. The whole approach holds up surprisingly well on stage – and titles include "Shine", "Fair Exchange", "Sister Seagull", "Blazing Apostles", "Life In The Air Age", and "Ships In The Night". CD

Josh BermanOld Idea ... CD
Delmark, 2009. Used ... $4.99
Old Idea, maybe, but a fresh, engrossing and straight up excellent set of modern jazz with an ear for classic avant garde – coronet player Josh Berman's debut as a leader! We're not sure if Berman has shown admirable patience and restraint in waiting until he felt ready to get put out marquee record of his own as leader, or if he's just been so swept up in being such a dynamic part of so many other exceptional improvisational projects (Exploding Star Orchestra, Rolldown, etc), but it's a really strong record, and we hope he stays active in this capacity! It's a quartet setting, with Rolldown leader Jason Adasiewicz on vibes and bringing some excellent atmosphere to the record, Keefe Jackson on tenor sax, Anton Hatwich on bass and Nori Tanaka on drums. Kinetic, unpredictable, but very, connectively textured and grooving. Josh handles all of the compositions, and the titles include "On Account Of A Hat", "Next Year" (Parts A, B & C), "Let's Pretend", "Nori", "What Can?", "Db" and "Almost Late". CD

Roy BrooksBeat (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Workshop Jazz/Verve, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
An amazing record – one of the best on Motown's short-lived Workshop Jazz subsidiary! The album is the first to feature Roy Brooks as a leader – and the super-hip drummer from Detroit really knows what to do with the opportunity! He's working here with a hip group that includes members of the Horace Silver quintet – including Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor, and Gene Taylor on bass – as well as Detroit contemporaries George Bohannon on trombone and Hugh Lawson on piano. The overall style of the record is quite different from Brooks' work with Silver – and has a much more open-ended feeling emotionally – an early hint at the qualities that Roy would unveil on his rare indie sides at the start of the 70s. The tracks are a mix of soul jazz numbers and others with a rougher-hewn sense of modernism – almost like the excellent work coming out of Chicago during the early 60s, from artists like Gene Shaw or the MJT+3. All the players are at their best, and the album features some of the nicest tenor work we've ever heard from Cook. Titles include "Soulsphere", "Soulin", "Homestretch", "Passin The Buck", and "My Secret Passion". LP, Vinyl record album

Cloud OneSpaced Out – The Best Of Cloud One ... CD
P&P, Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $6.99 15.98
Classic work from the legendary P&P Records label – created by one of the "P" talents who gave them their name – studio genius Patrick Adams, who mostly works here on his own under the name of Cloud One! Adams already had great success working with east coast soul groups in the first half of the 70s – and as Cloud One, he really finds his way around the more cutting-edge styles of the time – mixing bits of funk with bits of disco, and often adding in these cool electronic elements that really helped define the P&P sound! Many cuts have cool moogy keyboards, and some spacey elements along the edges – done with a lot more soul than some of the Euro space disco recordings of the same time – with much more of a tie to the New York underground that was Adams' main milieu. Titles include the classics "Spaced Out" and "Atmosphere Strut" – plus "Jump Jump Jump", "Stomp Your Feet & Dance", "Disco Juice", "Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By", "Patty Duke", "Happy Music", "Doin It All Night", and "Flyin High". Candid, 1961. New Copy ... $25.99 26.99
A tremendous non-Prestige moment from tenorist Booker Ervin – one of his first albums ever as a leader, and a record that bristles with 60s modern energy! The group here is only a quartet – with Horace Parlan on piano – and the album's got Booker's amazing tenor right out front, played with those angular, searching tones that are heard most famously on the Space and Freedom Book sessions for Prestige – but which seem to get almost more room for expression here! The remaining players are George Tucker on bass and Al Harewood on drums – both of whom help the album maintain a nicely rhythmic pulse, even when Ervin is going off into the stratosphere – and the album features 4 original tunes – "Mojo", "Uranus", "Boo", and "Booker's Blues" – plus versions of "Speak Low" and "Poinciana". Nice 2LP set that brings together a huge amount of pivotal work from the early bop years of Diz, including titles recorded for the Guild and Musicraft labels, as well as Prestige. The set's an essential one, because although you often hear references to this material, most of it was originally issued on 78s, and it's always pretty tough to find together like this – especially because the set's got great notes and session details. Dizzy Gillespie & Charlie ParkerDiz N Bird In Concert ... LP
Roost, 1947/1953. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Not the famous Verve Records pairing of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker – but instead a more obscure live date from 1947, but one that really lets you hear the genius that happens when both players take the stage! The tunes have this approach that really hits at the most creative side of bop at the time – maybe even more open, expressive, and filled with larger ideas than some of the early singles that were coming out in 1947 – in a way that makes the whole thing a really important document of the complexity that was in the music, right from the start. The pair really stretch out on a fantastic two part reading of "Night In Tunisia (parts 1 & 2)", then soar through "Groovin High (parts 1 & 2)", "Confirmation", and "Dizzy Atmosphere". The second half of the set features some more live material, but just with Dizzy Gillespie in the lead, from 1953 – with Bill Graham on alto and baritone, plus a bit of vocals from Joe Carroll. Titles include "School Days", "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac", and "Tin Tin Deo". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1957. Used ... $5.99
A great little jam session from Verve – done in a style that's looser and freer than some of the JATP albums, and with a smaller group overall! Players include Stan Getz, Paul Gonsalves, and Coleman Hawkins on tenor, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, and Wynton Kelly on piano – plus bass by Wendell and drums from JC Heard. There's a rougher, more spontaneous quality here than even on some of the other Norman Granz jam session records – a feel that's almost more "real" overall, as if you were catching the players all working together in a club. Each side features 2 long tracks – one upbeat and one mellow – and the tenor interplay alone is worth the price of the record! Titles include long takes on "Dizzy Atmosphere" and "The Way You Look Tonight" – plus 2 additional ballad medleys! CD

Island, 1995. Used ... $3.99
The one that catapulted PJ Harvey from a critical favorite to something of a popular favorite on both the US and UK – and her most remarkable creative stride to date! At the time, it felt like this was the one where Polly Harvey made a conscious choice to go "big" with sound, working with producer Flood after that famously stripped down Rid Of Me with Steve Albini engineering, but in hindsight it's amazing how the bigger sound, unafraid of electronics and all around grander atmosphere never even comes close to hiding the by turns intimate and mysterious lyricism – and it might be the best showcase for Polly's voice on record – projecting varying, unpredictable mood from track to track. Includes "To Bring You My Love", "Meet Ze Monsta", "Down By The Water", "Send His Love To Me", "The Dancer" and more. CD

An amazing little record – easily one of the coolest albums ever on the legendary Ovation label – and a set that has the small imprint almost hitting the heights of their Chicago neighbor Cadet Records! The core sounds here are from the folksy duo of Chuck Hollins and Dave Starr – but their music is really expanded with some key studio touches – jazzy inflections from session players, some slight fuller arrangements – and an overall vibe that carries the same sense of hope and new voice that you'd find in records by Terry Callier or Rotary Connection! The dawn of the 70s was a great time to push the boundaries of what could be done with folk and psychedelic trappings, and these guys really find a great little space – balancing trippy lyricism, lots of ethereal atmosphere, and a few heavily percussive jams! Titles include "Talking To Myself", "Krishna Dov", "Cry Baby Cry", "Twin City Prayer", "John Hurt", "Hard Headed Women", "Lovable", "Digress", "Staying High", "Sidewalk's Talkin'", and "Feelin' Good". Running Circle (UK), 2024. New Copy ... $26.99 34.99
Kinkajous are a jazz group, but one who have a very unconventional approach – maybe more concerned first with the overall sonic palette they create, before then providing more conventional work on the solos! The group is co-led by saxophonist Adrien Cau and drummer Benoit Parmentier – the latter of whom also adds in a fair bit of electronics, which makes for a great pairing with his crackling drums – which almost feel as if a live wire is sparking them along! Cau's reeds have a richness that really adds a lot to the sound, and brings in more spontaneous, human elements – balanced out by the piano and Fender Rhodes of Jack Doherty. There's light use of strings at points, which really sounds great, and creates a subtle sense of majesty – and titles include "Shifting Sands", "Transient Forever", "Heliosphere", "Jann", "Calling", "Overflow", and "In The Void Of Things". Lenny Kravitz had a hand in the record, which has been noted elsewhere – but we're guessing the vibe of the set is all Kuti's own – as it's been more than a few years since his last record, and he really seems to have grown and developed in the process! The set features guest appearances from Sampa The Great and Damian Marley – and titles include "Stand Well Well", "Love & Revolution", "Move", "TOP", and "Emi Aluta". CD

Charlie ParkerCharlie Parker (Bird On 52nd Street/Bird At St Nicks) ... LP
Jazz Workshop/Prestige, 1948. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99 14.99
Two rare Charlie Parker albums in a single set! First up is Bird On 52nd Street – one of the more obscure Charlie Parker sessions of the 40s – at least in the original release! The material was recorded in 1948, on a home tape recorder, but not issued until after his death – part of a huge wave of Charlie Parker material that hit the market at the end of the 50s and start of the 60s! The sound here is quite raw – made even more so by the recording quality – but it also offers up a good illustration of the sheer power of Bird back in the day, the kind of bold, bracing energy that made even more than the regular jazz world sit up and take notice. The group's a quintet – with Miles Davis on trumpet, Duke Jordan on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Max Roach on drums – and there's been a few tape tricks in the mastering, in order to come up with a better version of some of the recordings. Tracks are short – in true bebop format – and titles include "Night In Tunisia", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "Out Of Nowhere", "My Old Flame", "How High The Moon", "This Time The Dream's On Me", "Hot House", and "Chasin The Bird". Next is Bird At St Nicks – a posthumous issue of an early 50s live set by Charlier Parker – one of the many that were rushed to the public in the years after his early death. The set, like many of the other live ones from the time, isn't recorded that well – but the music is still pretty wonderful. There's a real focus on Bird in the way the microphone was set up – so although you hear the rest of the band comping in the background, the album almost works like a session of solo sax work by Parker – as his alto is right out front in the mix, playing with a faltering style at times – but in a way that only seems to deepen our vision of his genius. Players include Red Rodney on trumpet and Al Haig on piano – and titles include "Ornithology", "Star Eyes", "Visa", "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", and "Confirmation". LP, Vinyl record album

Oscar Peterson & Dizzy GillespieOscar Peterson & Dizzy Gillespie ... LP
Pablo, 1974. Very Good+ ... $8.99
A striking little record – and the kind that both players could only have made with the new freedoms in jazz recording of the 70s! Although Peterson and Gillespie had played together before on earlier Verve albums, the setting was never like this – because the album's only a duet between trumpet and piano, with no other instrumentation at all – yet the sound is amazing swinging! Peterson works almost as a one man rhythm section here – bouncing the tunes with plenty of hard inflections on his left hand – and setting up a swing that Dizzy blows over with warmly muted tones. There's a quality here that's personal – but not in that "oh look at us, we're such big stars" sort of way – and titles include "Mozambique", "Caravan", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "Blues For Bird", and "Con Alma" – always a treat to hear in a setting like this! Impulse/Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy ... $25.99 26.99 On November 15, 2024
One of the darkest Sun Ra albums of the early 70s – and a set that's also a bit unusual in his catalog as well! The album was issued during Ra's run with Impulse Records – a period that mostly saw the label reissue previous records from the Saturn catalog – save for a rare few like this one, which was an unusual all-new batch of material for Impulse! Because of that, it's been a bit overlooked in later years – maybe missed as less authentic, but actually some of the most striking sounds that Ra created at the time! There's a very strong tension here between electric and acoustic elements – not in the usual fusion-based way, but instead with this vibe that often has the electric instruments providing darker areas of sound, while the woodwinds and percussion have a way of humanizing the proceedings. June Tyson's also at her moodiest on the title track, "Astro Black" – and other titles include "Hidden Spheres", "Discipline 99", and the long improvisation "Cosmo Fire". LP, Vinyl record album

Saturn/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1963. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Mindblowing music from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – sounds recorded during the same marathon session that gave the world the records Other Planes Of There, When Sun Comes Out, and When Angels Speak Of Love – but titles that are much more obscure overall! The initial release of the material featured very misleading notes, but the true details of the session are even more impressive – as Ra plays a variety of unusual instruments alongside piano – including the piano strings, space organ, and clavioline – alongside some sublime straight horn work from John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and oboe, Pat Patrick on baritone, Danny Davis on alto and clarinet, Walter Miller on trumpet, Robert Cummings on bass clarinet, and Ali Hasaan on trombone! The lineup here has that raw power the Arkestra first unleashed after their initial move to New York – almost a sense of new freedom in the new environment – even at a time when they weren't clicking on a financial level, but still continued to push forward with new ideas in music! Some passages have this great approach that links the cosmic ideas of the Arkestra with older traditions of jazz soloing – while others reflect the growing concern of the group with new textures and sounds – making for some very impressive elements on both the horns and percussion. The group is completed by Ronnie Boykins on bass, Art Jenkins on space voice and percussion, and Tommy Hunter on drums, percussion, and some mighty nice reverb – and titles include "Biosphere Blues", "Intergalactic Research", "Earth Primitive Earth", "New Planet", and "Continuation To Jupiter Festival". Beautiful 2CD reissue features sublime sounds from the original tapes, remastered – plus a full bonus CD of unreleased tracks that include "Blue York", "Conversation Of The Universe", "Red Planet Mars", "Cosmic Rays/Next Stop Mars", "The Myth", "Meteor Shower", "Infinity", "The Beginning Of", and "Endlessness". One of the rarest Sun Ra albums ever – and one of the most enigmatic, too! Strange Strings is a very unique session recorded with an otherworldly sound – heavily steeped in the use of "electronic strings", amplified string instruments recorded with crazy echo and other effects, almost sounding like analogue electronics at times. The set also uses a variety of percussion instruments – including "log drum" and "lightning drum" – and Ra plays a bit of electronic piano on it as well as a variety of interesting percussion instruments. And if that's not enough, the whole album ends with the spooky sound of Thlan Aldridge on "space voice"! Incredibly cosmic, and quite out at most moments – with tracks that include "Strange Strange", "Worlds Approaching", and "Strings Strange". Also comes with bonus tracks – "Untitled St Peters", "Crystal Spheres", "Cosmos Miraculous", and "Ra Explains The Bandura". CD

Jazzman (UK), Late 60s/1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
A wonderfully wide-ranging tribute to the great John Coltrane – served up here in a whole host of tracks recorded after his too-early death, each of which take his musical message in different directions! The sound is certainly spiritual – in keeping with the different volumes in this long-running series – but there's a nice mix of expressions and instrumentation, offering up a journey into John Coltrane's important influence on so many different spheres of jazz – far more than you might expect! And this isn't just a set of Coltrane remakes or covers, either, as new songs are mixed with familiar ones – in a well-chosen batch of tracks that includes "Trane" by Carmelo Garcia, "Transition" by Malachi Thompson, "John Coltrane" by Clifford Jordan, "Naima" by Darwin Strickland Trio, "Terre Engloutie" by Gilles Torrent Jazztet, "To Trane" by Carsten Meinert Kvartet, "Welcome" by Norman Connors, "Ole" by Sonny Fortune, and "Naima" by Jack McDuff. Jive, 1987. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really breakout set from Jonathan Butler – a double-length album that really has the singer/songwriter taking off! Butler's really finding his best groove here – that mature blend of soul, jazzy bits, and a good ear for a hook – all done in that crossover careful style that helped Jonathan find a huge new audience up here in the Northern Hemisphere – and which continues to make this set one of Butler's best-remembered moments. Titles include "Lies", "Love Songs Candlelight & You", "Holding On", "I Miss Your Love Tonight", "One More Dance", "Barenese", "Overflowing", "Loving You", "Say We'll Be Together", and "Give A Little More Loving". Blue Note, 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Another wonderful set from vibist Stefon Harris for Blue Note – with his group Blackout – a seriously tight unit with Harris's vibes and marimba atmosphere enveloping some great work on Fender Rhodes by Marc Cary, drums by Terreon Gully, alto sax by Casey Benjamin and acoustic bass by Darryl Hall. The opener "Nothing Personal" busts the set out of the gate really tight and excitingly, with some mellower, groovier tunes on the follow up tracks that touch on the 70s soulful vibe just enough, while keeping things very propulsively jazzy. Other tracks include "For Him, For Her", "Until","Red-Bone Netti-Bone", "Summertime", "Blackout", "King-Tut's Strut" and a nice turn on Bobby Hutcherson's "Montara". CD

✨✧ Sun RaAstro Black ... CD
Impulse/Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
CD

✨✧ Jimmy SmithWho's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? ... CD
Verve, 1964. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real treasure, and a record that may well be our favorite Jimmy Smith album for Verve – a masterful meeting of his smoking Hammond work with some swingingly sophisticated arrangements by Oliver Nelson and Claus Ogerman! Both Nelson and Ogerman bring a fuller spectrum of horn work to the album than heard on other Smith sides of the time – using an almost orchestral approach to the backings, one that pushes Jimmy even further into the stratosphere as he solos madly on the organ! But don't think that the larger backings are clunky at all – because they're not – and there's a surprisingly deep soul to all the proceedings on the album, making it one of the tightest, grooviest, and deeply soulful records that Jimmy cut after leaving Blue Note! The LP includes two very long cuts – killer versions of "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf" and "Slaughter On 10th Avenue" – plus shorter takes on "Bluesette", "Women Of The World", and "Wives & Lovers" that are all plenty amazing too! ✨✧ Sonic YouthSonic Nurse ... CD
Geffen, 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sonic Youth still going strong in the mid 00s – following up Murray Street with the just as great, if slightly more ominous and moody Sonic Nurse! This is the period that Jim O'Rourke was in the band, not only as a producer/sound manipulator, but playing guitar and bass and contributing to the composition process – and it's such a natural fit. Sonic Youth's way of layering free form noisy atmosphere into coherent songcraft is impeccable here – and timeless. Includes "Pattern Recognition", "Unmade Bed", "Dripping Dream", "Stones", "Dude Ranch Nurse", "New Hampshire", "Paper Cut Exit", "I Love You Golden Blue", "Peace Attack" and more. CD

ORG, 2024. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The great Bernie Worrell left our planet all too soon – but the legendary keyboardist seems to have risen from beyond on this great posthumous set – with core performances on all the tunes, which are then finished off by a whole host of stars – at a level that really makes this album a real all-star event! Bernie's not just got help from famous funk talents – like Fred Wesley, Booty Collins, Leo Nocentelli, Buckethead, and others – he's also got a nicely large array of great talents from other spheres too – including Marc Ribot, Mike Watt, Daru Jones, Fred Schneider, Jerry Harrison, and other folks as well! And yet the album's still got a nicely unified vibe – that nicely weird quality that makes the Worrell groove so great over the years – served up on titles that include "The Big Woo", "Soldiers Of The Stars", "Pedro Woo", "Greenpoint", "Contusion", "Transcendence", and "Heapin Bowl Of Gumbo". Righteous (UK), Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The "Brian" in the title is Brian Eno – as you might guess from that image from Another Green World in the middle of the cover – but the sound of this set is quite different than what you might expect! CD1 imagines the sounds that Eno would talk about informing the music of his youth – tracks that showed up often on jukeboxes stocked to service visiting American GIs, which meant that the were full of raw soul, R&B, and even a bit of jazz – elements that most folks wouldn't tie to Eno, but which you can definitely hear here in arranging and production elements that would show up on his early solo vocal music, and some of the Roxy Music sounds too. Titles include work by The Tokens, Paradons, Lafayettes, Little Willie John, Dinah Washington, Ernie K Doe, Raymond Scott, The Cosmic Rays, Moondog, and Leadbelly. CD2 features more modern moments – a mix of avant jazz, early electronics, and 20th century compositions that tie a more direct link to the ambient universe – titles that include "Dream" by John Cage, "Come Back To Earth With Me" by Louis & Bebe Barron, "Atmospheres (excerpt)" by Gyorgy Ligeti, "Sleepy Time" by Raymond Scott, "Fordommelse" by Elsa Marie Pade, "Rhythmic Variations 1" by Daphne Oram, "Low Speed (excerpt)" by Otto Lueninng, "Ignition" by Tom Dissevelt, "Ectoplasm" by Raymond Scott, and "The Bewitched (Scene 1)" by Harry Partcy. ✨✧ VariousSpace Funk – Afro Futurist Electro Funk In Space 1976 to 1984 ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sun Ra was one of the first 20th Century artists to soar off in space, and George Clinton followed his lead with the Mothership in the 70s – and after that time, there was a surprisingly huge legacy of funk and soul artists who also headed for the cosmos – as you'll discover in this very unique set! The package is one of the deepest-digging soul collections we've ever heard from Soul Jazz – as most of the material here is pretty darn obscure – tracks that are from farther in the hinterlands of American soul at the end of the 70s and start of the 80s – and which are heavy on the sort of electrified touches it must have taken to send a funky spaceship out into the stratosphere! Many of these cuts have a sweet electro soul groove, which includes some nice keyboards and even a bit of vocoder work too – while others have a more old school funk approach, but still plenty of cosmic vibes in the mix. Titles include "Supersonic Space Lady" by Ernest Flippin II, "Make It Good To Me Baby" by Copperfield, "Break Out" by Rodney Stepp, "Computer Funk" by Ose, "Fly Guy & The Unemployed" by Ramsey 2C/3D, "Fee Fi Fo Fum" by Leo, "Bionic Funk" by Santiago, "Space Invaders" by Solaris, "Computer Power" by Jamie Jupitor, "Plastic" by Juju & The Space Rangers, and "Computer Games" by Frank Cornelius. A sublime early one from The Cure! The band was always best when setting a semi-dour mood, but balancing that with darkly beautiful overall sound and this one does that perfectly, while bringing in thicker waves of keyboards and other more floating bits of atmosphere – building up from the starker guitar, bass and voice backdrop of the first couple albums – and definitely a bellwether for bigger sounds to come. Includes the incredible, underappreciated early single "Primary", "The Holy Hour", "Other Voices", "All Cats Are Grey", "The Funeral Party", "Doubt", "The Drowning Man" and "Faith". CD

✨✧ Keith JarrettEl Juicio (The Judgement)/Life Between The Exit Signs ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1968/1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 obscure early sessions by Keith Jarrett – back to back on one CD! El Juicio is wild and wonderful work by Keith – light years away from his records on ECM! The album features a quartet that includes Dewey Redman on tenor, Charlie Haden on bass, and Paul Motian on drums – but it's clearly Keith who's driving the bus here, taking lots of odd twists and turns for playful moments that come as an unexpected surprise. One of the best of these is the short percussion track "Pre Judgement Atmosphere", which almost sounds like a Moondog number – and another is the rollingly funky "Gypsy Moth", a tune that always seems to be careening out of control, but is never "outside", just percussively grooving. Side two features two longer jamming tracks that almost have a loft jazz feel – "El Juicio" and "Piece For Ornette" – and Keith plays alone on the track "Pardon My Rags". Life Between The Exit Signs is early trio work by Keith, a bit straighter than some of his 70s recordings – but in a good way, with kind of a New York modern groove that reminds us of early work by Paul Bley or Steve Kuhn! The trio's a very progressive group – with Charlie Haden on bass and Paul Motian on drums, making for a really open-ended approach to the rhythms – and the album includes the original compositions "Church Dreams", "Margot", "Long Time Gone", and "Love No 1 & 2". Seun Kuti maybe sounds more majestic here than ever – ready to rise not just to the legacy his father Fela left behind, but maybe into an even larger world of global soul as well – with a groove here that doesn't abandon his Afro Funk roots, but definitely augments that sound with all sorts of rich, fresh currents that seem designed to take Seun into the stratosphere of global soul! Saturn/Cosmic Myth, 1966. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A compilation of Sun Ra's pioneering mid 50s work in Chicago – key years in Ra's evolution that find him taking familiar styles of the time, from doo wop to bebop – and sending them into the stratosphere on a vessel that's all Ra! All of the tracks are from 1955 and 56, and most appear to have been previously released on CD, but it's still a fine and richly varied demonstration of Ra's range during a couple of key early Saturn years in Chicago! Rush, 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
Redman at an early peak – raw cosmic funk-steeped hip hop from the wildly creative, gritty-voiced man himself! Like a lot of the greatest 90s hip hop, there's a strong George Clinton influence to the beats – but the thick atmosphere is really on another level – then and now, there's nothing exactly like Redman's flow, which is crazy and charismatic at the same time. The great Erick Sermon co-produces and probably had a big hand in keeping it funky and from going to far into the murky deep end, it's a straight up classic to this day.
