✨✧ TrafficLow Spark Of High Heeled Boys ... CD
Island, 1971. Used ... $3.99
A huge album from Traffic – a set that was first given to the world in a strange-shaped cover – which seemed to grace countless record collections back in the 70s! The group is expanded to a sextet here – with bass from Rick Grech and percussion from Rebop Kwaku Baah – both of whom really flesh out the sound in wonderful ways – adding more bottom and heft to the musical ideas here from Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi, the latter of whom gets to shine on vocals on two tracks too! As usual, the reeds from Chris Wood really send the whole thing home – and titles include "Rock & Roll Stew", "Rainmaker", "Many A Mile To Freedom", "Hidden Treasure", and "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone". ✨✧ Lenny WilliamsSpark Of Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
ABC/Universal (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A real classic from Lenny Williams – most likely his strongest solo album ever! By the time of this set, Lenny had been out of Tower Of Power for a few years, working on his own in the west coast scene. But the real genius here comes from producer/arranger Frank Wilson – once a key force at Motown, but here a key contributor to the album – creating a set of smooth groovers and wonderfully mellow tracks that bring out a warmly silky quality that we'd never heard in Lenny's vocals before! Includes the smooth ballads "Think What We Have" and "Cause I Love You", the latter a fantastic stretched out soul track that has Lenny in a Teddy Pendergrass mode that's miles ahead of his old work! Other tracks include "Midnight Girl", "Changes", and "You Got Me Running" – all key numbers in this excellent set! CD

✨✧ VariousHello Everyone – Popsike Sparks From Denmark Street 1968 to 1970 ... CD
Spark/Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare gems from the late 60s UK Spark label – a small imprint founded by the Southern Music publishing company, as their own outlet for some of the cool compositions in their catalog! Many of these tracks were recorded in the basement of the company's London offices – often by the same rough groups of musicians, which means that there's a nicely unified feel to the songs – even while the individual artists are trying to take off in a lots of cool new directions with their vocals and performances. The mode is nicely trippy at times – not all-out psych, but with lots of cool production touches on both the vocals and instrumentation, which really keeps things interesting. The package features 27 tracks in all – most of which we'd never heard before – along with rich notes on this unique slice of late 60s Brit rock. Titles include "Hello Everyone" by Sir Ching I, "Room At The Top Of The Stairs" by Timothy Blue, "The Devil Rides Out" by Icarus, "Digger" by The New Generation, "You're Still Mine" by The Eggy, "Cherrywood Green" by Just William, "Heartbreaker" by The Baby, "The Wall" by The Fruit Machine, "The Old Iron Bell" by Gene Latter, "Midsummer" Dreaming" by John Carter & Russ Alquist, and a stunning version of "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" by Eartha Kitt. Not Two (Poland), 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Tenorist Rodrigo Amado is at the head of a really great group here – a quartet that can come on fierce when needed, but also really work together to build up their sound slowly – improvising in ways that are open, yet feel structured too – especially on the moments that let the sound resonate between the players, find some ground of its own, then provide a perfect platform upon which individual members can build! In addition to Amado on tenor, the group also features Thomas Johansson on trumpet, Jon Rune Strom on bass, and Gard Nilssen on drums – on titles that include "Spark", "Ignition", "Activity", and "Response". Maki AsakawaSome Years Past ... LP
Universal (Japan), 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $49.99 54.99
Maki Asakawa looks as dark and moody as ever on the cover, but there's actually a few moments here that seem to have a spark of positivity – although maybe one that's just in the instrumentation and production, which seem to borrow a bit from some of the darker side of the UK spectrum at the time! In some ways, Maki might be said to be one of the original goths in music – but with her longer legacy, and varied roots, that sort of a tag would only be reductive –as you'll hear on this set. The record features work by Tetsu Yamauchi and Toshiyuki Honda – and titles include "Leave The Flow", "King Of Losing Time", "Some Years Past", "Said News Said Old", "Dancer", and "Melancholy On The Other Side". Dexter GordonManhattan Symphonie ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Sealed ... $11.99
Later genius from Dexter Gordon – an album recorded upon his return to the US in 1976, and done in a style that breaks the bounds of some of his sessions in Europe! Gordon seems to take new life in the recording – moving past the simple role of main soloist on familiar tunes, and stepping into a much more strongly group-minded leader – one who grooves easily with the piano of George Cables, bass of Rufus Reid, and drums of Eddie Gladden – in a session that's overflowing with soulful invention. Even older tunes take on a new spark of life in these arrangements – and Gordon's phrasing has this "bite" that comes through beautifully, even in the mellower moments. Titles include "Tanya", "I Told You So", "LTD", "Moment's Notice", and "As Time Goes By". LP, Vinyl record album

EMI/Big Pink (South Korea), 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 22.99
The only solo album ever from William Lyall – an artist with ties to 70s UK pop giants Pilot and The Bay City Rollers – although don't hold that latter reference against him, as the music here is much like his work in Pilot! As with that group, the songs here are wonderfully sharp and compressed – well-crafted UK pop with that cool sense of production that could make a tune like "Magic" crackle and spark at a level that's different than so many US hits of the time – a quality that's even better when you start to listen to William's great work on keyboards too. Phil Collins played drums on a number of tracks, Paul Buckmaster delivers some great orchestrations at points – and titles include "Playing In The Sand", "Us", "Reasons", "Maniac", "The Deeper You Get", "Sleep", "Don't Be Silly", and "Supertrader". VariousLenny Kaye Presents Lightning Striking ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 25.99
Lightning strikes more than once when it comes to the magic of rock and roll – but it leaves behind a different sort of spark every single time – as you'll hear in this collection of work put together by Lenny Kaye, who associates key scenes and key moments that helped the music surge forward over the decades! Kaye picks select cuts from Memphis, San Francisco, Detroit, and other cities – and serves up a massive double-length package of tracks that step easily between genres, and which provide the perfect playlist to his well-penned volume of the same name. Given that Lenny was the guy to give us the legendary Nuggets series back in the day, it's clear he definitely knows what he's talking about – and you'll certainly feel that way after reading the very detailed notes in the set! 48 tracks in all – with titles that include "I'm So Happy" by Danny Cobb, "Marcella" by The Castelles, "Tiger" by Fabian, "Stupidity" by The Undertakers, "Pride Of Man (demo)" by Quicksilver Messenger Service, "Coo Coo" by Big Brother & The Holding Company, Crazy Like A Fox" by Link Cromwellchs, "Looking At You" by MC5, "Cavern Stomp" by The Big Three, "I Hear A New World" by Joe Meek, "Once I Had A Love (1975 version)" by Blondie, "Down At The Rock & Roll Club (alt)" by Richard Hell & The Voidoids, "Leavin Here (version 1)" by The Rationals, and "Gimme Chocolate" by Baby Metal. A really nice later set from legendary Texas blues titan Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins – done up for the Jewel label with a bit of the spark that was missing from the hit & miss work he did earlier in the decade for Bluesville! Blue Lightnin' also has a down and dirty style in spots, too – such as on the sinister "Back Door Friend" – the kind of thing that might have put off the academic market his previous label was shooting for! Other titles include "Found My Baby Crying", "Move On Out" (parts 1 & 2), "Fishing Clothes", "Gamblers Blues", "Wig Wearing Woman", "Last Affair", "Daddy Was A Preacher", "Jail House Blues", "I Hate I Got Married", "Lovin' Arms" and more. ✨✧ Bo Diddley & Chuck Berry/Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, & Bo DiddleyTwo Great Guitars/Super Super Blues Band ... CD
Chess/BGO (UK), 1964/1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of amazing all-star albums from Chess Records – back to back on a single CD! First up is Two Great Guitars – in which Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry come together in a really unique album for Chess Records in the 60s – and that's saying a lot, given all the groundbreaking sounds we heard from that label at the time! The format is quite unusual – as each side features a long instrumental jam that really lets the guitarists work out their differences – in modes that are almost proto-funk more than blues, rock, or soul – with lots of wicked guitar lines that are way ahead of their time in terms of recording space! The long tracks are "Chuck's Beat" and "Bo's Beat" – but the duo also shine brilliantly on the shorter tunes "Liverpool Drive" and "When The Saints Go Marching In". Next is The Super Super Blues Band – a group that definitely lives up to its name – given that the lineup features the Chess Records stalwarts Bo Diddley, Howlin Wolf, and Muddy Waters! The set's maybe a bit more in the mode of Wolf or Waters than some of Bo's own records – although there's a bit of that riffing spark of his at times – and the tracks are often nice and long, with more than enough room to make you feel like Phil Chess gave these guys plenty of space in the studio to hang out, and find the right way to interact. As much as we love Chess albums with short songs and a soulful punch, we really appreciate it when they can break format and open up on a session like this – which really helps create a unique moment on record! Titles include "Goin Down Slow", "Long Distance Call", "Sweet Little Angel", "Ooh Baby & Wrecking My Love Life", and "Spoonful". CD

✨✧ Andrew HillLift Every Voice (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare and beautiful Andrew Hill session, and one of the classic Blue Note entries into the "jazz and voices" sound that the label pioneered with Donald Byrd and Eddie Gale. Hill leads a core jazz group that includes Woody Shaw on trumpet, Carlos Garnett on tenor, Richard Davis on bass, and Freddie Waits on drums – and the group is backed by a vocal ensemble with a very spiritual vibe – a chorus who soar out soulfully, and really augment the jazz instrumentation of the album! The sound is a lot more hip than the Donald Byrd & Voices albums, and the playing of the core jazz group is very very soulful – along the lines of Hill's Grass Roots album, which was also from the same period. The record's similar to the Max Roach/Billy Harper vocal work around the same time, and titles include "Ghetto Lights", "Hey Hey", "Two Lullabies", and "Love Chant". CD reissue features 6 unissued bonus tracks, including "Blue Spark", "Drew's Tune", "Mother Mercy", "Natural Spirit", and "Such It Is". CD

Grapefruit (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of tracks from the glam rock generation – not just work by street urchins, but some big names as well – including acts you might know from other modes, all brought together here with a unified aesthetic in the early 70s! Glam was hardly a flash in the pan – as instead, the moment provided a key critical crossroads in music – a moment in which attitudes, styles, politics, and fashion were really opened up past mainstream expectations – setting the stage for punk experimentation, and a huge range of new music to come in the following decade! The music really gets its due here – with a big booklet of notes that provide track by track detail – taking you through a journey that spans 66 tracks in all, by a diverse array of artists who include Brutus, Dana Gillespie, Streak, Agnes Strange, Third World War, John Cale, Despair, Hammersmith Gorillas, Roxy Music, Tina Harvey, Slade, Pretty Things, Spark, New York Dolls, Ian Hunter, Silverhead, Sweet, Tim Curry, Troggs, Slowload, Jobraith, Hollywood Stars, Fumble, Spiv, and many others. Aretha FranklinSparkle – Music from the Original Motion Picture ... LP
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield wrote the soundtrack and produced the album – and the result is a killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Aretha was still doing pretty well at this point, but the album really gave her a push – and the super-hip setting let her record some of her best work of the 70s. If you own only one Aretha Franklin album from the 70s, it should probably be this one – as the mixture of soul, funk, and soundtrack grooves is great, and a refreshing change from some of the cliches that could show up on other records. Paul SmithCool & Sparkling – The Liquid Sounds Of Paul Smith ... CD
Capitol/Universal (Japan), 1956. New Copy ... $13.99
Some of the best work by an overlooked pianist from the 50s! Back in the days when most of the easy keyboardists were trying for a sound that was filled with overdramatic flourishes, and too much emotional Carmen Cavellarroing, Paul Smith was perfecting a mellow easy style that he called his "liquid sound". While not totally frictionless, his keyboard work was a good hint at the easier sounds to come in the 60s and 70s – and he's ably helped in his efforts on this album by clarinetist Abe Most, guitarist Tony Rizzi, and bassist Sam Cheifitz. The record hangs somewhere between jazz and lounge – but Smith's dedication to strong writing and inventive soloing make us consider it more of a jazz album. Titles include "Little Evil", "The Grump", "Kempy The Painter", and "Murphy's Light". CD

A fantastic disco album from the late 70s – obscure, but with a very funky pedigree, and one that includes musical ties to earlier groups The Skullsnaps and Wood Brass & Steel! The instrumentation here is a bit like the latter – well-crafted ensemble funk with a deeper, more jazzy sophistication than you might expect – topped with very soulful vocals from the Sparkle trio, who have a depth that's way stronger than most other female club acts of the time – the sort of range that could have also been singing deep soul a decade before. The instrumentation is wonderfully sharp, and way more than the usual disco or club – and titles include "Let Yourself Go", "You", "Disco Madness", "Dabooza", "The Rock", and "Down The Way" – plus the cool cosmic instrumental "Six Million Steps" by Rahni Harris! Melvin SparksTexas Twister/Melvin Sparks '75 ... CD
Eastbound/BGP (UK), 1973/1975. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Wicked work from the legendary Melvin Sparks – 2 of his rare post-Prestige sides for the short-lived Eastbound jazz label! Texas Twister is one of Melvin's funkiest albums ever – done in a style that's even harder and rawer than his work for Prestige! The sound is lean and often a bit rough around the edges – with possibly more funk than even jazz in the mix – and players on the set include Caesar Frazier on organ, Bad Bascomb on bass, Ron Bridgewater on tenor, and Idris Muhammad on drums! Prestige funk maestro Bob Porter produced the whole thing, and gets a beautifully soulful sound out of all players – rounding out Melvin's totally cooking work on guitar with some equally great contributions from the rest. Titles include "Whip Whop", "Judy's Groove", "Star In The Crescent", "Texas Twister", "Gathering Together", and "I Want to Talk About You". Melvin Sparks 75 is a record that moves the guitarist a bit more into soul territory than the funky jazz of his early 70s years – but it's still a heck of a great little record overall! The tracks are shorter than before and the backings are bigger – but Melvin's work on the strings still gets plenty of space in the arrangements, and there's more than a few funky instrumentals here that more than make the album great. Plus, Little Jimmy Scott sings vocals on a few cuts – "I Got To Have You" and "If You Want My Love" – both done in a style that's fuller and more soulful than any of the work cut under his own name! Other tracks are mostly instrumental, and include the funky numbers "Bump & Stomp", "Get Down With The Get Down", and "Get Ya Some" – plus "Looking For Love", "In The Morning", and "Mocking Bird". Great work from a beautifully-balanced group – a set of musicians who do a great job of finding each others spaces and strengths together – yet a record that really stands out for the work on stritch and saxello from Chad Fowler! Both reed instruments aren't that common – you'd be more likely to hear them on 60s records by Roland Kirk or George Braith – and they've got this nice edge that's slightly different than usual saxophone notes, working beautifully alongside the warmer piano work of Eri Yamamoto, the drums of Steve Hirsh, and surprisingly subtle (at times) bass of William Parker! Tracks are all nice and long, and titles include "Sparks", "In The Garden", "Bob's Pink Cadillac", "Taiko", and "Real World". CD

A monster from Melvin Sparks – one of his greatest three albums! Melvin's single-line guitar work is incredibly great – very much like Grant Green's during the early 70s – and titles include "Love the Life You Live", "Akilah", and "All Wrapped Up". Westbound/Tidal Waves, 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A never-issued album by funky guitar legend Melvin Sparks – recorded right after his final record for the Westbound label, and appearing here for the first time ever! Sparks first rose to fame via funky work with Lonnie Smith and Lou Donaldson in the late 60s, the cut some killer albums of his own and with organist Leon Spencer in the 60s – before disappearing a bit until a great revival in more recent years! This set represents Sparks right before he dropped off the map – a session that's done with a sweet jazz funk vibe that shows the way that labels like Westbound were picking up some of the style of the successful CTI/Kudu imprint – mixing some larger charts with the leader's solo strengths – allowing maybe some more soulful influences in the rhythms, while still going for a jazz funk approach overall. The set's much more instrumental than Sparks' last record for Westbound, which had more vocals – and although a few tracks have an upbeat clubby style, most of the music is more in a midtempo mode. Titles include "Love Tones", "I'm Funky Now", "I'm Gonna Funk You Up", "You're Gonna Make It", "The Truth Hurts", "Make It Good", and "Disco Booty". LP, Vinyl record album

A really brilliant little record from Nat Adderley – one that shows him shaking off the groove gotten from brother Cannonball, and finding some great space all on his own! The setting here is tight and funky – at a level that's a bit more arranged than a small combo soul jazz session, but which still has plenty of sharp edges and bold notes! The groove's a bit like Kudu Records from the time, but less electric overall – and Nat's cornet is featured in a hip combo with John Stubblefield on reeds, Onaje Allen Gumbs on piano and keyboards, and Buddy Williams on drums. There's plenty of great funky riffing in the set, but also some wonderfully laidback grooves that really sparkle with electric piano from Gumbs – and titles include a surprisingly wonderful version of "MASH", plus "Hummin", "Midnight Over Memphis", "The Traveler", "Listen To The Rain", and the Latin-tinged "Amor Sonador". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has a cutout hole, surface wear, and a coin-sized stain on the front.)

Byron Allen TrioByron Allen Trio ... CD
Calibre/ESP (Netherlands), 1965. Used ... $9.99
Beautifully free alto work from Byron Allen – a player who really shines brightly on this rare session for ESP Records – one of the few ever cut under his own name! Allen's got a style that's right up there with the 60s best from Ornette Coleman or Marion Brown – able to move with a fluidity that's breathless, even amidst rhythms that are very loose and open – as the trio here works in a style that almost echoes some of the harmelodic modes of Coleman, but which eventually pushes farther towards the freedoms of other artists on ESP! The set has some wonderful bass from Maceo Gilchrist, whose round, rolling tones really make the album sparkle – as do the punctuated drums of Ted Robinson. Titles include "Today's Blues Tomorrow", "Time Is Past", "Three Steps In The Right Direction", and "Decision For The Cole-Man". CD

✨✧ Allman BrothersBrothers & Sisters ... LP
Capricorn, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99
The Allman Brothers at their best – and a key 70s set that may well have the group working at their peak! All their best southern roots are firmly tied together here – not just the country-touched approach to rock that was the group's calling card, but also their ties to some of the Georgia soul scene as well – an element that really surfaces in some of the album's piano lines and rhythms, which really help underscore the depth of the tunes – and give the group a solid footing that's stronger than some of their more cliched contemporaries. These tunes hold up wonderfully over the years – and have a visionary approach that almost sparkles even more strongly here in the 21st Century than when we first started digging their sounds on radio back in the 70s. Titles include "Southbound", "Jessica", "Pony Boy", "Wasted Words", "Ramblin Man", "Come & Go Blues", and "Jelly Jelly". LP, Vinyl record album

American-Dutch All StarsFor All We Know ... CD
Blue Jack Jazz/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 2003. New Copy ... $9.99
A tight, old school set of jazz from the Dutch American All Stars – a group that features trumpeter John Marshall, pianist Hod O'Brien, bassist Jacques Schols, and drummer Peter Ypma – all playing here in very relaxed, familiar company! There's nothing too fancy or overdone with these tunes – and they spin out with that easygoing feel we love in any album that has O'Brien on piano – a mature mode of jazz that never tries too hard to overstate its case, but gets plenty of greatness done along the way. Marshall's horn has all the sparkling tones we love in other Blue Jack Jazz recordings, and the basswork from Schols really adds a nice undercurrent of soul to the set. Titles include "Joop's Lope", "Forecast", "Quasimodo", "Frisky", "Milestones", and "Zanzibar". CD

One of Leny Andrade's later albums – a mixture of jazz and bossa, with a sparkling modern edge, but still performed with small combo backing! There's electric keyboards on most of the cuts, dancing along with Leny's vocals in a breezy mode that's a bit like 80s work by Tania Maria on Concord – but not as smooth overall, with sort of a more traditional approach that's in keeping with Andrade's roots! Titles include "Pedro Brasil", "La Mentira/Tu Mi Delirio", "Viola Violar", "Angra", "Amigo Nao Tem Defeito", and "Eu Quero Ver". CD

Marcos Ariel/Whatmusic (UK), 1981. Used ... $9.99
A lost treasure of Brazilian fusion – originally released by keyboardist Marcos Ariel on his own tiny label in 1981! The set sparkles with the best of the larger Brazilian fusion scene of the time – working in a post-Azymuth blend of keyboards, guitar, percussion, and Brazilian instrumentation – and often taking off to the skies in Return To Forever-like jams that really open the set up! Ariel plays a wide range of keys on the set, as well as a bit of flute – and other instrumentation includes soprano sax, guitar, percussion, and tenor from Leo Gandleman. The tunes have a nice way of blending the spacey with the rhythmic, and the set's got a sparkling finish that makes it sound as fresh today as it did over 20 years before! Titles include "Bambu", "A Ponte", "Humaita", "Samba Torto", "Mar", and "Dois Irmaos". CD

Average White BandShine ... CD
Arista/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99 About July 20, 2022
Great later grooves from Average White Band – a real gem from the point when the group was settling nicely into a mellow soul vein! By this point, the combo wisely realized that they couldn't keep things going forever as a funky group – so they laid back and fell into their second strongest suit – the kind of mellow stepping rhythms that sparkled nicely between the bigger cuts on earlier records, produced to perfection here with a shimmeringly soulful feel! The album's got a mature feel, and the lyrics are often understated and well-balanced – no easy crossover soul or adult contemporary cliches – just the kind of warmth the band was always known best for. Titles include "Into The Night", "Our Time Has Come", "Catch Me", "For You For Love", "Help is On The Way", "If Love Only Lasts For One Night", and "Shine". CD

Count BasieBasie In Sweden ... LP
Roulette, 1962. Near Mint- ... $9.99
One of the most hard-hitting Count Basie albums from the Roulette Records years – and that's saying a lot, given the power of Basie at the time! The set was recorded in Sweden, with a kind of triple-time energy that really has the whole thing burning right from the start – as the group's driven onward by some bold work on drums from Louis Bellson – who's working here with a lineup that includes Frank Wess and Frank Foster on tenor, Marshall Royal on alto, and Thad Jones on trumpet. There's a slight rawness to the recording – still as clear as other Roulette sessions, but with a bit more "liveness" too – a sense of place that really helps the performances sparkle. The whole thing's great – and titles include "Little Pony", "Plymouth Rock", "Backwater Blues", "Who Me", and "April In Paris". LP, Vinyl record album

A post-Basie session from the Count Basie Orchestra – recorded after the Count had passed away, and Frank Foster returned from his wayward years to assume leadership of the group! The sound here is very much in the best Basie mode of the late 50s and early 60s – extremely fluid large group arrangements that sparkle with touches from Basie stalwarts Frank Foster, Eric Dixon, and Freddie Green – plus a number of younger players in the group. Be Bop DeluxeSunburst Finish ... LP
Harvest, 1976. Very Good+ ... $7.99
One of the crowning moments of Bill Nelson and Be Bop Deluxe – a set in which it seemed that everything the group was trying for really came together – in a mode that's both tuneful and timeless, and which – a bit like Sparks or 10CC – was slightly out of time with the rest of the rock scene in the 70s! There's a few surprisingly catchy numbers – of the sort that should have made the group even bigger on the international scene – but Nelson also manages to work in lots of keyboard magic, too – in that compressed approach to his prog inclinations, which was always the appeal of the group. The set's neither glam nor punk, nor prog or classic rock – very much its own sort of thing – with titles include "Fair Exchange", "Life In The Air Age", "Ships In The Night", "Crystal Gazing", "Blazing Apostles", and "Beauty Secrets". One of Blakey's best non-Blue Note sides from the time – and a killer album that sports a late 50's lineup of the Jazz Messengers that included Jackie McLean, Johnny Griffin, and Bill Hardman. The three of them sparkle and shine with the sort of brilliance that Blakey's leadership brings to the group, and they wail their way through a 13 minute long reading of "Night In Tunisia", with excellent solos all around, and the other long cuts "Theory Of Art", "Couldn't It Be You?", "Evans", and "Off The Wall". Ultra Vybe (Japan), Early 80s. New Copy ... $9.99
Live work from the great Art Blakey – a set that features two different performances from two really great groups! The first two cuts are from 1980 – from a time when the Jazz Messengers features up and coming 80s giants Bobby Watson on alto, Valery Ponomarev on trumpet, Billy Pierce on tenor, James Williams on piano, and Charles Fambrough on bass – all young musicians who'd evolve into leaders on their own in a few short years after these recordings, but who really sparkle here under Blakey's leadership! The cuts feature a great take on the Williams tune "1977 AD", and a long version of the Jazz Messengers standard "Blues March". The last four tracks feature a slightly later group – still with Fambrough on bass, but including wonderful tenor and soprano sax work from Jean Toussaint, plus trumpet from Terence Blanchard, alto from Donald Harrison, and piano from Johnny O'Neal – an equally great lineup, but in a completely different way. Titles include a great take on the Fambrough tune "Little Man" – plus "Polka Dots & Moonbeams" and "Moanin". CD

One of the key records that helped the British scene leap forward in the mid 60s – even if the group never fully got their due at the tome! This set by Blossom Toes has gone on to become the stuff of legend – a record that fully embraced, the headiest psych modes of the period, but also delivered things with a unique vibe and quality level that really sets the record apart – putting it an elite space that would include debut albums from Pink Floyd and Tomorrow! The group are led by the incredible Brian Godding – a hell of a singer, and one whose voice is perfectly tuned to the offbeat production that really makes the whole thing sparkle – as does the fantastic work on guitar. There's some larger arrangements on the set at time, but they only seem to augment the genius at the core – on titles that include "Look At Me I'm You", "The Remarkable Saga Of The Frozen Dog", "People Of The Royal Parks", "What On Earth", "The Intrepid Balloonists Handbook Vol 1", "You", and "Mrs Murphy's Budgerigar". 3CD version is filled with great bonus material – a few instrumental tracks and singles– plus a full live set from Stockholm in 1967 on CD2, and further demos and BBC tracks on CD3! A really fantastic album from the great Lo Borges – and proof of that long-running adage about Brazilian singers – they never falter as they age, and most seem to be able to hold onto all that made them great in the first place – at a level that's very different from artists on the Anglo side of the spectrum! Lo first rose to prominence as part of the "corner club" of Milton Nascimento – and his songwriting really helped propel Nascimento in the 70s, and was also the start of a great run of fantastic, but oft-overlooked (at least on our shores) records by Borges himself – a sublime legacy that's really continued here, in a set of well-penned songs that sparkle with all the many charms of Lo's key records in the 70s. The groups vary throughout the course of the set, but all players are pretty darn great – and tunes include guitar from Steve Jordan, vibes by Don Elliott, and even some nice tenor work from Coleman Hawkins. Braff's own playing is a bit free of the overly-sentimental tones that sometimes mar his other records – and he's got a clarity and charm here that makes the record one of his best full length sets ever. Trina BroussardInside My Love ... CD
Expansion (UK), Late 90s/2008. New Copy ... $8.99 19.99
The long-overdue release of Inside My Love – a sublime little set recorded by Trina Broussard in the late 90s – originally planned for the So-So Def label, but never properly issued at the time! The album's years ahead of most soul of the time – a great precursor to the Neo Soul explosion that major labels would finally get behind in the 21st Century, but which still left them scratching their heads back in the 90s – and failing to get music this great out to the market. Thankfully, Expansion have helped fix a decade-old mistake – and they're letting Trina's warmly soulful sound sparkle beautifully with this well-done reissue. Broussard's got a wonderfully classy approach to her music – one that's been appreciated in subsequent releases, but which comes through even more clearly here – a great sense of poise that's almost classic in a Phyllis Hyman sort of way. Titles include "Losing My Mind", "Why Do I Feel So Sad", "All I Need Is You", "All Night Long", "Not Around", "Remember Me", "Sailing", "Say You Really Love", and "Inside My Love". The cover and title are a bit unfamiliar, but the music is right up there with Byrd's classic sessions with baritonist Pepper Adams – a great player here, with a deftness on his horn that's incredible – matching all the sharp changes and soulful undercurrents of Byrd's sparkling trumpet! There's a nice hard sound to the whole thing – almost the raw power of the pair's albums for the Warwick label – and as with those, Herbie Hancock is on piano – giving the whole thing an excellent soul jazz groove that really kicks the main soloists into action! He's a hell of a writer, a great singer, plays incredible keyboards and guitar, and seems poised to become one of the giants of 21st Century Soul! This debut CD is issued on Kevin's own label – and it sparkles like the best underground soul we've been stocking over the past few years. There's killer keyboards on nearly every track, a warmly snug fit with Kevin's deeply soulful vocals, creating a style that's got a bit of D'Angelo, but a lot more jazzy finish with touches of 70s funk and 80s groove! The classic debut from Change – and the start of an amazing run of groovers in the early 80s! The set's got a tight, jazzy feel throughout – a stripped-down approach to disco modes, with the same focus on the basslines that you'd find in work by Chic – but a style that's almost even more instrumentally focused overall, given the great range of studio players who worked on the set. Yet there's also some key vocal moments, too – work by Luther Vandross that really helps make some of the best tracks sparkle, and which went onto catapult Vandross into a rich solo career on his own. First off, Gal's vocals are amazing – more expressive and dynamic than in the early days – with a range of different emotions that comes off wonderfully, and without some of the heaviness of some of her contemporaries – such as Maria Bethania. A solo piano set from Strata East mainman Stanley Cowell – but a record that's got enough soul and spirituality to rival a full group recording! Although working alone here, Cowell's touch on the keys is astounding – often flowing and highly rhythmic, with a pulsating sense of energy that makes even the mellower tracks sparkle with soulful imagination. A number of tracks are intimate explorations of themes heard more famously on albums done with Charles Tolliver – but which come alive in a whole new way here in Stanley's solo setting! Most work here is on acoustic piano, but Cowell also picks up the electric keys for the tune "Travelin Man" – done here as an overdubbed "duet", and one of the hippest tunes on the entire record! Cryan ShamesA Scratch In The Sky ... LP
Columbia, 1967. Very Good ... $9.99
A great step forward for The Cryan Shames – a group who started their career singing other peoples' music, but who emerge here with some great songs of their own! There's a brilliant Sunshine Pop feel to the whole record – but there's also some garagey elements that reflect the group's presence on the Chicago scene of the 60s – not a Dunwich quality entirely, but not far off either! That edge makes the psych moments really sparkle nicely – with a more sinister feel than anyone might have guessed from the group on their initial outing. A few moments echo Brit invasion modes – but with a trippier style that's a bit like Chad & Jeremy on Columbia – and titles include "Cobblestone Road", "The Sailing Ship", "A Carol For Lorelei", "Sunshine Psalm", "Mr Unreliable", and "In The Cafe". Vanessa Da MataVanessa Da Mata Canta Tom Jobim ... CD
Sony (Brazil), 2013. Used ... $9.99
Wonderful stuff – a set that represents a real maturation for Vanessa Da Mata – a stronger link to Brazilian tradition than before, yet still with a vibe that hanks onto the contemporary energy that's always made us love her records! As the title indicates, the set's a batch of classic compositions by Antonio Carlos Jobim – sung by Da Mata in this gently flowing style that's mighty nice – and set to arrangements by Deodato that really have an old-school mode – but not some sort of sleepy retro-bossa, or bossa-remix – instead that kind of airy space that Deodato first helped pioneer back in the 60s, and which sparkles even more here from his own lead work on acoustic piano! The balance is great, and Vanessa really rises to the top in the setting – on titles that include "Fotografia", "Wave", "Correnteza", "Estrada Do Sol", "Sabia", "So Tinha De Ser Com Voce", "Chovendo Na Roseira", "Por Causa De Voce", and "So Danco Samba". A real enigma from Miles Davis – rare material from the Blue Note vaults, issued here for the first time ever – and done as a totally sweet 10" album! The cover and package are great – and the music is even better – very much in the most sparkling spirit of Davis' early 10" albums for Blue Note – with a lineup that includes JJ Johnson on trombone, Jimmy Heath on tenor, Jackie McLean on alto sax, Gil Coggins on piano, Percy Heath or Oscar Pettiford on bass, and Art Blakey or Kenny Clarke on drums! Titles include "Enigma (alt take 1)", "Kelo (alt take 1)", "Chance It (alt take 3)", and "Chance It (alt take 4)". LP, Vinyl record album

Miles DavisIn Person Saturday Night At The Blackhawk – Vol 2 ... CD
Columbia, 1961. Used ... $3.99
Legendary early live work from Miles Davis – one of the first examples on record of the way that Davis could really stretch out in a concert setting! The music's a bit more straight ahead than later live dates, but still pretty open and exploratory – and in addition to Davis' sparkling work on trumpet, the album also features some killer tenor lines from Hank Mobley – working here as a key part of Miles' group, and blowing with a hell of a lot of soul. Rhythm is by the rock-solid trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – and titles include "Neo", "So What", "Fran Dance", and "Well You Needn't". CD

Miles DavisMiles Davis At Carnegie Hall – The Legendary Performance Of May 19, 1961 ... CD
Columbia, 1961. Used 2 CDs ... $7.99
Sparkling live work from Miles Davis – and a set that captures both sides of his talents on Columbia at the time! Half the material features a smoking quintet – with Hank Mobley on tenor, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – and the other half of the date features a larger orchestra led by Gil Evans – in the modern mode that make the Miles/Evans collaborations sound so great on some of the pair's studio records! Together, the material offers up a beautiful live portrait of Davis' early 60s genius – allowed a bit more space to roam in the live setting, on titles that include "So What", "New Rhumba", "Lament", and "No Blues" – all taken at a bit of a faster clip than in the studio, as Miles was wont to do in a live performance! 2CD set features the full concert in one package – including material issued on the More From Carnegie Hall record – 11 tracks in all. Blue Jack Jazz/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 2005. New Copy ... $9.99
The legendary Herb Geller joins pianist Rein DeGraaf in an excellent set dedicated to the music of Gigi Gryce – those sparkling modern jazz compositions that made such a big impact in the 50s! Gryce's original vision is updated slightly, but the tunes have a mostly classic feel – very well played by a quintet that features Geller on alto, in the Gryce role, and John Marshall in trumpet – blowing with a great mix of compressed tones and bolder notes that really recalls the brilliance of a young Donald Byrd! DeGraaf handles piano, and remaining group members include Marius Beets on bass and Erik Ineke on drums – coming together wonderfully on tunes that include "Social Call", "Nica's Tempo", "Sans Souci", "Evening In Casblanca", "Blue Lights", "Minority", and "Salute To Birdland". Rare work from funky Lou – unreleased for years! This is an excellent live set that was recorded in 1970, when Lou was at the height of his Blue Note powers, and working with a group that included Idris Muhammad (drums), Melvin Sparks (guitar), and Leon Spencer (organ). Recorded live at the Cadillac Club in Newark, New Jersey, this set's a perfect document of what a funky lounge gig was like in the era of the organ/tenor combos. The group swings hard and funky, with a sound that's like their best Blue Note recordings, and the track list includes "Peepin", "The Scorpion", "Alligator Boogaloo", and "Footpattin' Time". CD

Ballads actually sparkle the best here – and showcase that wonderfully full mode that was the best side of The Dramatics harmonies – but the uptempo tunes are good, and have breakout moments that sparkle nicely. Paquito D'RiveraFunk Tango ... CD
Paquito/Sunnyside, 2007. Used ... $7.99
A great little album from Paquito D'Rivera – not nearly as gimmicky as you might expect from the title, and a soulful set that's right in line with some of his first few gems as a leader in the US many years back! There's definitely some tango quality to some of the tunes – but it's mostly just a bit of bandoneon used lightly in the instrumentation – leaving most of the work here to sparkle in that Havana-influenced blend of jazz and Latin roots that's always made D'Rivera's music so great. Paquito plays alto and clarinet, alongside trumpet and valve trombone from Diego Urcola, piano from Ed Simon and Alon Yavanai, bass from Oscar Stagnaro, and drums from Mark Walker. Hector Del Curto plays bandoneon on the record – and tracks include "Milonga 10", "What About That", "Pere", "Revirado", "Funk Tango", "Mariela's Dream", "Como Un Bolero", and "Giant Steps". CD

Nederlands Jazz Archief (Netherlands), 1960s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
Nedly Elstak may not be a household name – and he's certainly not going to win any charm contests with his pose on the cover – but he's a hell of a great trumpeter from the Dutch scene of the 60s, and comes across beautifully here on a collection of rare live material from back in the day! The set's a real revelation to us – as we'd never heard Elstak before – and in addition to these sparkling trumpet lines that lie somewhere between Clifford Brown and Ted Curson – with the warmth of the former, and bite of the latter – Nedly also plays some piano too – an instrument that he really handles wonderfully – with a real range on the keyboard, and this thoughtful depth of sound that really blows us away. Tracks are all live, but really well recorded – and players include Theo Loevendie on alto, Dick Vennik on tenor, Rein de Graaff on piano, and Willem Breuker on bass clarinet – on titles that include great Elstak originals like "Some Astronomers Wonder", "Love You So", "The Machine", "No One Around", "Double Eclipse", and "Beautiful Mountain". Bill Evans meets Bill Evans – in a uniquely-styled session that features overdubbed solo lines from Bill, creating a multi-piano sound that's really great! The approach sounds gimmicky, but it's not – and Evans carries all the sensitivity you might expect from the title and image on the cover – a personal, up-close style that's nicely free from piano solo cliches, given the extra work of the overdubs. There's a nicely rhythmic feel to most numbers, and the piano lines often work in chromatic counterpoint to create a warmly sparkling quality to the set. Gil Evans, Jerry Dammers, & OthersAbsolute Beginners (UK pressing) ... LP
Virgin (UK), 1986. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
A great snapshot of jazzy London in the years before the acid jazz explosion of the late 80s – and a surprisingly great soundtrack that's stood the test of time much more than the actual film! The music here represents a jazz-based undercurrent of the London scene that was already turning its ears back in time – to a pre-mod era of the late 50s, which is the setting for Colin MacInnes original novel used for the film – portrayed here in a pastiche of vocal and instrumental songs that often have a fair bit of classic touches! Gil Evans was brought in for most of the instrumentals, and turns out some really sparkling charts that have all the charm of his best work of the 50s – and other contemporary artists do a pretty great job themselves – at least on the more jazz-based numbers. Evans numbers include versions of Charles Mingus' "Boogie Stop Shuffle" and "Better Git It In Your Soul", plus his own "Va Va Vaoom" – and the better jazzy tunes includes the excellent "Killer Blow" by Sade, plus "Have You Ever Had It Blue" by The Style Council, "That's Motivation" and "Absolute Beginners" by David Bowie, "Rodrigo Bay" by Working Week, "Selling Out" by Slim Gaillard, and "Riot City" by Jerry Dammers. Female SpeciesTale Of My Lost Love ... LP
Numero, Early 70s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A tale of lost love, and lost music too – served up in this never-issued album from a very cool little group – a west coast girl pop outlet with a very dreamy sound! The group was formed by sisters Vicki and Ronnie Gosset, who'd later go on to greater fame as songwriters – but here, along with some female friends, they craft this music that really sparkles strongly, and which should have gotten the group some much bigger fame at the time! The style is a mix of late 60s girl group sounds and some headier 70s touches – including a bit of AOR polish and crossover country hooks in a few spots – but used in this really thoughtful, gentle sort of way – so that the group really retain their own sound throughout. As usual with the Numero Group, this is music you'd never hear otherwise – and titles include "Peace Of Mind", "Baby Buggy", "Bye Bye Bye", "Till The Moon Don't Shine", "Chinchilla Hat", "In The Moonlight", "Here Comes The Night", "Sooner Or Later", "There's A Rainbow", "Explain Why", "Tying The Leaves", and "Tale Of Lost Love". Hachette, 2021. New Copy ... $8.99 30.00
The Wu-Tang Clan didn't just pop onto the scene in the early 90s – but their rise to the top was somewhat meteoric, and was part of the group's larger vision for their own place and that of hip hop within the broader American culture! Author SH Fernando really gets at that ambition – getting past some of the musical platitudes that are usually linked to the group and its many projects – and instead tracing a detailed history that starts with early sparks of expression, and rises to show the full ongoing impact the group's members have had. Fernando had great access from the group in putting the book together, but not in the "fluff" project way such access usually creates – and he also drew on decades of his own materials, put together as his career as a journalist kept him in contact with the group as they changed over the years. The very hefty book is over 500 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. Book

Numero, 1975. New Copy ... $7.99 16.98
A never-heard soundtrack for a never-seen film – and a record that's every bit as funky as better-known sets from the blacksploitation era! Final Solution were a small time group from Chicago's west side in the 70s, but on this wicked little soundtrack they sparkle just as brightly as Isaac Hayes, Willie Hutch, Curtis Mayfield, or any of our favorite soundtrack soul artists from the time – working in a really righteous approach to soul with lots of heavy rhythms on the bottom and rumbling bass in the mix – so that even when the tunes are mellow, there's still a bold, brash sort of power to the set! The vocals are mostly delivered in harmony style, again with a nice edge – a bit like The Impressions work on Three The Hard Way, but with more of an indie soul feel overall, given the production circumstances. Once again, our hats are off to Numero for unearthing this gem – and as usual, the full tale of the group, the movie, and the music is told at length in the accompanying 16 page booklet! Titles include "Brotherman", "Never Coming Back Again", "I Don't Care", "Girl In My Life", "Gotta Get Through To You", "One Day", "I'm Ready For Love", "Theme From Brotherman", "No Place To Run", and "We Can Work It Out". And sure, you definitely know Aretha's sound on Atlantic Records – but do you know every moment of genius she cut for the label? Because Franklin on Atlantic has a lot more to offer than the hits (although there's plenty of those here in this package too) – as she kept evolving her style over the course of the 70s – really coming up with some compelling, sophisticated modes that aren't always fully given their due! Albums here include early classics – like I Never Loved A Man, Aretha Arrives, Aretha Now, Lady Soul, and Soul 69 – but there's loads more gems, including This Girl's In Love With You, Aretha In Paris, Spirit In The Dark, Young Gifted & Black, Hey Now Hey (The Other Side Of The Sky), Let Me In Your Life, and the Sparkle soundtrack with Curtis Mayfield. MGM/BBR (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
The start of a very successful run for Gloria Gaynor – a seminal bit of crossover 70s soul – one that perfectly linked the dancefloor with the airwaves, and managed to take on more than a few living rooms as well! Gloria's not entirely in full blown disco-diva mode yet, and works here with a soaring Philly-styled groove – of the sort you'd hear with groups like First Choice or Three Degrees – almost grounded a bit in earlier female soul, especially in the vocals and overall changes in the grooves – yet sparkled up plenty with some fuller, richer 70s arrangements. Those are handled by Norman Harris and Harold Wheeler – who do plenty to warm up the production by Meco – and the set includes the stunning 6 minute version of Gloria's big hit "Never Can Say Goodbye", plus "All I Need Is Your Sweet Lovin", "We Belong Together", "Real Good People", "Honey Bee", and "Reach Out I'll Be There". A great little session – and a meeting that was one of the best things to happen to the Oscar Peterson trio during the 50s! Stan's tone fits perfectly with the group here – and his playing next to the guitar of Herb Ellis recalls many of the fine strengths of the early 50s Getz sides with Jimmy Raney – although somehow coming across with even more depth and imagination here – probably a result of the more sophisticated approach to productions handled by Verve! Gab's got that razor-sharp quality here that made him such a key part of Blackalicious – that fast-rhyming style that's definitely a gift, and which has a lot more emotional power than just lyrical speed – set here to production that really drives home a sense of urgency in the music, and makes us wish he hadn't been taken from us all too soon! Titles include "The Idea Of America", "Vice Grip", "World Without Money", "The Gentrification Song (rmx)", "You Gon Make It In The End", "Going Farther", and "Back To The Light". LP, Vinyl record album

Jacky GiordanoOrgan – IM 24 ... LP
Le Tres Jazz Club (France), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 33.99
Fantastic funky organ from Jacky Giordano – a European keyboardist who seems to sparkle in just about every style he tries on! The set's a sound library record, barely issued at the time – but Jacky treats the proceedings like he's trying to audition for some top-level jazz organ position – using some moments that have a Verve Records jazz approach, others that are lighter and more melodic, and others that rival the keyboard grooves of sound library contemporary Alan Hawkshaw! There's just a bit of rhythm on most tracks, and most titles are quite short – but Giordano packs a lot into a little – on titles that include "Coffee Or Tea", "Latest News", "Hey Taxy", "Easy Drive", "Interrogation Point", "Pheasant Moment", and "Beating Around". James GovanWanted – The Fame Recordings ... CD
Ace/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
A dozen previously-unreleased tracks from the great James Govan – presented here with work from some of his rare singles from Fame Records! All the music was recorded at Muscle Shoals when the scene was at its height – headed up by production whiz Rick Hall, and backed by the great Fame studio musicians – but it's Govan himself who really makes these tunes sparkle – singing with this rich voice that's clearly rooted in the 60s modes of Otis Redding, but which also stretch forth in a new style of his own! James has this earnest appeal on record that really echoes his image on the cover of the set – and there's a charm to these tunes that really goes beyond the usual southern soul of the period –far past any overdone cliches or commercial modes. The discovery of these dozen sides is a great thing for fans of southern soul – and they make a great counterpart to the few Fame singles that Govan ever issued. Titles include "I've Gone Too Far", "Something", "Stuck On Her", "Way Over Yonder", "I Shall Be Released", "You Get A Lot To Like", "Just Like A Woman", "Take Me Just As I Am", "Jambalaya", and "Wanted Lover No Experience Necessary".
