Sounds Of LiberationUntitled – Columbia University 1973 ... CD
Dogtown/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1973. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.00
A true treasure from this righteous Philly collective – a group who only issued one album in the 70s, and who finally double their catalog with the release of this rare performance from 1973! Sounds Of Liberation have this all-star lineup of musicians who did great work in Philadelphia and elsewhere – with Khan Jamal on vibes, Monette Sudler on guitar, and Omar Hill and Rashid Salim on percussion – working alongside some great work on flute and alto from Byard Lancaster, heavy bass from Billy Mills, and just the right touch of drums from Dwight James! The style here is maybe tighter, and occasionally more funky than on their one self-titled album – but the group also stretch out strongly too – hitting all the right spots in this forward-thinking blend of spiritual jazz modes, of the sort that would have made them a huge 70s ensemble, had they held on and found the right venue. Titles include the extended "New Horizon", plus "Badi", "Sweet Evil Mist", "Thoughts", and "Keno". CD

Orrin EvansLiberation Blues ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2014. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A wonderful session from pianist Orrin Evans – one of the most richly talented players of his generation – always great, no matter what the setting! We've recently dug Evans in trio and larger group formats – but this set's got him cooking strongly with a quintet – a tight lineup that has Sean Jones on trumpet and JD Allen on tenor – but each dropping out a bit near the end to let Evans showcase his trio as well! The horns hold sway on most of the record, though – including the wonderful Liberation Blues Suite – which is penned for Dwayne Burno, and features both his own music and tunes by Evans as well. The set continues with great sounds that really forward the righteous vibe – and titles include "A Free Man", "Liberation Blues", "Juanita", "Devil Eyes", "Simply Green", "Anysha", "Meant To Shine", and "Mumbo Jumbo". Also includes a bonus encore – "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes", with vocals by Joanna Pascale. CD

✨✧ VariousWelcome To Zamrock – How Zambia's Liberation Led To A Rock Revolution 1972 to 1977 (CD & book) ... CD
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $10.99 24.98
Fantastic sounds for fans of funk and rock alike – music from the freaky, fuzzy 70s scene in Zambia – a place where styles effortlessly criss-crossed to really produce something new and unique! The work here is often heavy on fuzz guitars, but also has some wickedly soulful basslines and drums – so that although the tunes can be psych-styled, they're also pretty darn funky too – often at a level that's a bit like the Nigerian Afro Funk of the time, but much grittier and more righteous! The quality of the music and scene is explored in depth in the package – which includes a very detailed booklet of notes and photos – all to support the selection of music, which may well be the hippest so far from the Now Again label – and that's really saying a lot, if you know their other titles! Tracks include "Funky Lady" by Teddy Chisi, "Fast" by Salty Dog, "Rain & Sunshine" by Crossbones, "I Don't Know" by Born Free, "Fwe Bena Zambia" by Five Revolutions, "Who's That Guy" by Ricky Banda, "Changa Namwele" by Machine Gunners, "Poverty" by Cosmos Zani, "Dzikolino Ni Zambia" by Keith Mlevhu, "Running" by Blackfoot, and "Everyday Has Got A New Dream" by Dr Footswitch. CD
(Comes with a very cool hardcover book!)

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyAccent On Africa ... LP
Capitol, 1968. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Wickedly hip work from Cannonball Adderley – and one of his real standout sessions for Capitol Records in the 60s! The set lives up to its "Africa" promise right from the very first note – and features a set of loud, proud tunes that really bring out the righteous sounds of this generation of new liberation – tunes that sparkle with lead alto and soprano sax from Cannon, but which really draw even more energy from the whole collective of musicians on the record – a hip lineup led by HB Barnum, who also did all the arrangements for the set! The result is a record that's unlike any of Adderley's other albums – from some of the evocative snakey lines on the top, to the hip mix of 60s Cali soul and African percussion on the bottom. And oh yeah, David Axelrod produced the whole thing too! Titles include "Gumba Gumba", "Up & At It", "Hamba Nami", "Ndolima", and "Lehadima". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label stereo pressing. Cover has light aging and some faded marker on front.)

Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim)Africa – Tears & Laughter ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $16.99
Dollar Brand is always a hell of a pianist, but he also has a way to really make equal magic when working with a horn – which happens here not just with the soprano and alto work of group member Talib Quadr, but also from some soprano work by Dollar Brand himself! The record's got this nicely varied sense of sounds – a short bold tune at the start, a poetic piano solo next, and then some longer tracks that really flesh things out with that beautiful vision that can make Brand's music so wonderful and so unique. Other group members include John Betsch on drums and Greg Brown on bass – working together as if they've been associates for years – on titles that include "Liberation Dance", "Do You Hear That Sound", "The Perfumed Forest Wet With Rain", "Ishmael", "Tsakve", and "Imam". CD

ChicagoChicago Transit Authority ... LP
Columbia, 1968. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
The first Chicago album – presented here in all its jazzy brilliance! Back in the day, we used to wince when we heard these guys – but over the years, thanks to much rediscovery of the band by groove hounds, we've really come to like their work a lot. This first album especially has some great moments – complicated jazzy bits that you might have forgotten about, and some surprisingly groovy material that sounds a lot better than you might remember! Includes the classics "Beginnings", "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is", "Questions 67 & 68", and "Listen" – plus the tracks "Someday", "I'm A Man", "Free Form Guitar", and "Liberation". LP, Vinyl record album

Kindred Spirits EnsembleLove Is Supreme ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2009. Used ... $18.99
The great first full length chapter of an ultra-hip ensemble – a contemporary group, but one with a great ear for the spiritual sounds of the 70s! The group's a bit like Build An Ark – no surprise, as they've shared a similar label, Kindred Spirits – and like that collective, this one really helps bridge a space between older jazz expressions and 21st Century styles – showing that older music still has a strong influence on the younger generation, especially when the sound is as deep as this! There's plenty of Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders inspiration going on here, but the execution is a bit different too – bits of strings amidst jazzy flute, keyboards, and trumpet lines – plus occasional vocals too. Titles include "The Creator Has A Master Plan (Peace)", "Ja-Mil", "Prince Of Peace", "John Coltrane", "Two Lullabyes", "Naima" and "Shining Liberation". CD

Christian Scott Atunde AdjuahStretch Music ... CD
Ropeadope, 2015. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A brilliant record and a big step for Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, at a point when he truly was stretching out creatively in a big way – seamlessly mixing classic electric jazz influences & modern electronic touches! Scott is on trumpet, his custom sirenette & reverse fluegelhorn, mixing earth-bound sounds and spacey atmosphere throughout – and the band includes Braxton Cook on alto, Lawrence Fields on piano and Rhodes, Corey King on trombone, and Corey Fonville and Joe Dyson Jr on a pretty impressive mix of drums and sampler atmosphere. It starts off strong with "Sunrise In Beijing", an impressive showcase for flautist Elena Pinderhughes, who really helps this one take flight over the spacey & stuttering percussion. Other tracks include "Twin", "Perspectives", "West Of The West", "Liberation Over Gangsterism", "Of A New Cool", "Tantric", "The Last Chieftain" and more. CD
