Kirk DeGiorgioModal Forces/Percussive Forces ... LP
BBE (UK), 2023. New Copy Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
One of the most fantastic albums in years from the mighty Kirk DeGiorgio – a set that draws upon 70s sound library influences as a way for Kirk to really unfurl some of the jazziest elements in his music! Way back when nobody was ever referencing jazz for club tracks, DeGiorgio was always very clear to share his inspirations – a long-running love of keyboard giants from the 70s, like Herbie Hancock and George Duke – but not in a way that sought to ape their sounds, but expand on the ideas they first brought into the world – which is definitely the case here! Some rhythms have a nice evolution past London broken beat modes, and the whole thing's got a wonderfully cosmic vibe – served up on tunes that include "Chicago Shift", "Watts Awakening", "Dayton Daydreams", "Khumunu", "Beth El", "Shinar", "Cincinnati Sunrise", "Harlem Homerun", and "The Oakland Feel". ✨✧ Bill SummersOn Sunshine ... LP
Prestige, 1979. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The funky percussionist from The Headhunters – funking in a smooth mode with a summery Bay Area groove behind him. Tracks have lead vocals by Lori Ham and Calvin Tillery – and although the work isn't some of the best funk produced from the Fantasy Records scene of the mid/late 70s, the overall sound is pretty strong, and the album's got more than a few nice numbers. Titles include "Walking On Sunshine", "Dancing Lady", "Feel The Heat", "Samba De Oakland", "Musicland", and "You've Got Me Lovin Again". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear, small dents at the opening, and is bent a bit at the spine.)

Amour/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
An obscure group from the Oakland side of the Cali soul scene in the 70s – and one who get some superb backing here on the best cuts – thanks to work from the funk combo Perfect Circle, who bring some great jazz funk elements to the mix! The group features one female vocalist, Samaki – but the majority of the tracks have the three male singers working in a harmony style that's in kind of an east coast mode, but perhaps a bit looser. Uptempo funky cuts include "I Remember You" and "Sayin It & Doin It", which both sound like tracks from Perfect Circle's own album – plus the titles "Let's Take A Disco Ride" and "Put The Music On Funk". ✨✧ Ed BlackwellWhat It Be Like? – Ed Blackwell Project Vol 2 ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1992. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the last recordings made by Ed Blackwell before his early passing in 1992 – an Oakland live date recorded with an excellent lineup that includes Graham Haynes on cornet, Carlos Ward on alto and flute, Mark Helias on bass, and a bit of guest trumpet from Don Cherry! The style here is earthy and organic – never overly modern, and building in a way that echoes Blackwell's angular roots, but transforms that sound into more spiritually exploratory lines. Ward's work is especially great, and the absence of a piano means that the interplay between cornet and sax is the main driving force of most tunes. Titles include "Nebula", "Grandma's Shoes", "Pentahouse", "First Love", and the extended "Lito" suite in 3 parts. CD

✨✧ Ed BlackwellWhat It Is – Ed Blackwell Project Vol 1 ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1992. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the last recordings made by Ed Blackwell before his early passing in 1992 – an Oakland live date recorded with an excellent lineup that includes Graham Haynes on cornet, Carlos Ward on alto and flute, and Mark Helias on bass – working without any piano, at a level that maybe echoes some of Ed's earlier work with Ornette Coleman, but with a voice that's completely his own. Titles include "Nette", "Pettiford Bridge", "Thumbs Up", "Rosa Takes A Stand", and "Mallet Song". CD

✨✧ SadakaPremonition ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
A record with a really timeless feel – a jazz set from the early 80s scene in Oakland, and one that opens up in so many wonderful flavors! A few cuts have a soul style – with female vocals in the lead, amidst warmer, jazzier backings – and other tracks have an instrumental approach, but one that's a bit different than straight jazz – almost spiritual fusion, in a way that nicely echoes some of the lyrical passages. We'd almost place the set in the same company of the work of Norman Connors in the mid 70s – although the overall sound is somewhat different – the driving creative force here is Umlah Sadau-Holt, who plays Fender Rhodes, soprano sax, tenor, flute, and even percussion. Titles include "African Violet", "Premonition", "Outer Space Blues", "You Make The Sunshine", "Black Encounters", and "Children Of The Universe". CD

✨✧ Pastor ChampionI Just Want To Be A Good Man ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Pastor Wiley Champion is a gospel singer with a hell of a voice – the sort that could have instantly made him a huge soul singer, if he ever chose to leave his faith – but which is maybe even more powerful here directed towards a spiritual sort of setting! The album's a very lean effort, especially for a contemporary album – recorded to two track analog tape in a church in Oakland, but with crisp fidelity that lets the vocals really come to life once the songs begin – as Champion sings with light backings from his own guitar, plus a bit of keyboard, bass, drums, and tenor. The whole thing is wonderfully without any sense of cliche – and has none of the slavish attempt to sound "authentic" that you might fear from a contemporary record like this – just the pure, unadulterated power of a singer who's worked in obscurity for decades, finally getting his due. Titles include "To Be Used By You", "Storm Of Life", "I Know That You've Been Wounded", "He'll Make A Way", "I Just Want To Be A Good Man", and "Who Do Men Say I Am". CD

✨✧ Charlie Hunter QuintetRight Now Move ... CD
Ropeadope, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet grooves from Charlie Hunter – sounding better here than we've heard in years! The album's a real back-to-basics one for Charlie – a return to the sort of small combo grooving that first made him stand out from the pack back in the early 90s. The format is simple – Charlie's unique 8 string guitar solos over a quintet with tenor sax, trombone, chromatic harmonica, and drums – and the feel is like some of the sweetest grooving electric sides from the 70s. Very nice work – and a real surprise to our ears! Titles include "20th Congress", "Whoop Ass", "Try", "Oakland", "Freak Fest", and "Mali". CD

✨✧ Ndikho Xaba & The NativesNdikho Xaba & The Natives ... LP
Trilyte/Mississippi, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Spiritual sounds and a heck of a lot more – served up by Ndiko Xaba, an expatriate South African musician who was working in Oakland at the time of this record – fusing together the roots of his homeland with some wonderfully free and open American jazz styles! At times, there's a bit of a Dollar Brand vibe in Xaba's piano – long lines, with a really compelling pulse – but other times, the music opens up with the kind of searching freedoms you'd hear on the AACM scene of the time – mixing together righteous styles with inventive musical expression! The great Plunky – of Oneness Of Juju fame – is in the group on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – and the record also features Black Fire labelmate Lon Moshe on vibes and percussion, plus additional percussion, bass, and drums. Titles include "Freedom", "Flight", "Nomusa", "Makohsi", and "Shwabada". LP, Vinyl record album
