✨✧ Three SoulsSoul Sounds ... LP
Argo, 1965. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A great relic from the soul jazz years on the Chicago scene – a really cool, cooking combo led by alto saxophonist Sonny Cox, who went on to record some great material on his own – and who also became a famous basketball coach as well! The group also features organ from Ken Prince and drums from Robert Shy – and on a number of tracks, the group is joined by Gerald Sims on guitar and a very young Louis Satterfield on electric bass – years before his more famous work in Earth Wind & Fire! Titles include "You're No Good", "Armageddon", "Chittlins Con Carne", "Black Nile", and "Big Jim". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cadet label stereo pressing, with deep groove – a nice copy!)

✨✧ VariousGospel Soul Of Detroit – Sanctified Sounds from the Motor City ... LP
Detroit Gospel Reissue Project, 1960s/Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A deep deep dig into the Detroit gospel scene – one that goes way farther than the bigger work by artists like CL Franklin and his famous daughters – and which instead looks at the wealth of work circulating on labels that mostly only issued 45rpm recordings! The music here is wonderful – a real revelation, from a city that had countless churches that each prided themselves on top-shelf singing groups to deliver the message on a Sunday morning – most of them artists who were also drinking deep from the same local brew that produced more famous Detroit soul at the time! Production on most of these tracks is mighty lean – leaving the vocals right up front in the mix, often driven by a few key instrumental elements – and titles include "Lord I Want You To Move" by Sensational Pontiac Spiritual Singers, "Save Me Jesus" by Gospel Blue Jays, "Another Soldier Gone" by Detroit Motor City Singers, "Have You Tried Jesus" by The Trumpelettes, "Been To The Water" by The Shackleford Singers, "My Captain" by The Pure Heart Travelers, and "Pressing On" by The Silver Harps. ✨✧ VariousMore Lost Soul Gems From Sounds Of Memphis ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Deep deep work from an under-tapped reservoir of soul – the legendary Sounds Of Memphis label – a key contemporary of Stax Records, but one with a huge amount of material that never got issued at the time! This excellent set corrects that fact, by bringing forth a batch of material that's almost all fresh here for the first time ever – and mixed with just a few rare SOM singles that were issued in the early 70s – all cuts that really show the righteous power of this tiny little label! There's a fair bit of artists here who touched the scene with work in other ways, and others we're really hearing for the first time ever in their company – an amazing picture into the mighty Memphis scene at the time, in a treasure trove of southern soul, deep ballads, and even a few funky numbers too. 22 tracks in all – and titles include "You're Using Me" by Rudolph Taylor, "You Don't Love Me" by Tommy Raye, "A Great Big Thing" by Carroll Lloyd, "Tempted" by Marjorie Ingram, "Hold On Hold Out" by George Jackson, "That's Why I Keep Her" by William Bollinger, "Since My Baby Left Me" by Dan Greer, and "Lost In A Dream" by Vision. ✨✧ Janko Nilovic & The Soul SurfersMaze Of Sounds ... LP
Broc (France), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great pairing of funky talents old and new – 70s sound library legend Janko Nilovic on keyboards, and the totally hip Soul Surfers combo on rhythms – providing these great backdrops for some surprisingly wonderful work on organ, piano, and Rhodes from Janko! We'll confess, we didn't know what to expect – we love Janko's old records, but we're sure about recent material – but the album's a killer, and has all the sharp sense of rhythm and flair for the unusual electric bit that made the classic material so wonderful! The set was recorded in both Paris and Novgorod – and titles include "Sweet Path", "Maze Of Sounds", "It Never Ends", "Say It Softly", "Prelude", and "Wavy". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousGroove With A Feeling – Sounds Of Memphis Boogie, Soul, & Funk 1975 to 1985 ... CD
Sounds Of Memphis/Ace (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The later years of the Sound Of Memphis studio – cuts from a time when the legendary deep soul powerhouse was trying on some of the newer modes from the end of the 70s! The work here is a real lost slice of Memphis soul – music from a time when the heyday of Stax and Hi Records had long passed, but smaller indies like SOM were going strong – and able to capture the shifting sound in the great soul city – as singers worked in the sorts of funky club and boogie modes you'd more regularly associate with New York or Chicago! The quality level is surprisingly great – especially since there's a nicely indie vibe to these cuts – not polished disco rehash, but the sort of underground club material that we've always loved from reissues on labels like Numero or Soul Cal – coming here from the surprising source of Memphis. Even more importantly, almost all this material never saw the light of day at the time – since the SOM connections to bigger labels had faded – so the whole thing's like a time capsule, taking you back to some real under-exposed days on the Memphis scene! Titles include "Dream Girl" and "Groove With A Feeling" by Freedom Express, "You Can Bet I Can Get You Yet" and "What You Do For Love" by Lee Moore, "Ridin" and "Attraction" by Erma Shaw, "Cold Blooded Sally" by Fran Farley, "New Lang Syne" by Kannon, "I'll Be Around" by The Jacksonians, "Gone" by Vision, "We Need Love" by Donald O'Connor, "Tighter Tighter" by Demetrius & Takelia, and "Don't Fight It" by Louis Williams. Red Star/Sony, 2001. Near Mint- 2LP ... Just Sold Out!
A collection of tracks put together by the folks at Heineken's Red Star Foundation – a program that's designed to support "urban influence music" (whatever that means!) The upshot of the package is that it's a great set of underground soul grooves – perhaps not as cutting edge as the folks at Red Star might have you think (because if you're into this stuff, you're already one step ahead of the crowd), but well selected, with a really solid soul sound throughout! Titles include "Glitches" by Amel Larrieux & The Roots, "A Long Walk (touch of jazz remix)" by Jill Scott, "Today (Earth Song)" by Erykah Badu, "High Off You" by Jack Herrera, "Butterfly" by India Arie, "Legend" by Nelly Furtando, "So Sweet" by Brad Young, "Still Searching (remix)" by Damien Marley & Stephen Marley, "When Your Ups Are Downs" by Don Scribbs, "Sweetest Thing" by Lathun, "You Make Me Wanna Smile Again" by Eddie Jackson, and "Don't Stop" by Spanish Fly. ✨✧ VariousDuomo Sounds Ltd – Nigerian 80s Disco Music To Move Your Soul ... CD
Odion Livingstone (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet grooves from the Duomo Sounds label – a short-lived Nigerian imprint who cut some mighty funky sounds at the start of the 80s! The title here uses the word "disco", but these cuts have none of the strings and polish of the sounds you'd hear at Studio 54 – as most numbers here are stripped-down and raw, really more in a clubbier take on the more famous Nigerian funk of a few years before! However, there's also a quality here that could easily cross over to the hipper clubs on the New York underground – as most of these guys are also using the same sort of small combo funk instrumentation of the best of the indie post-disco scene – which means that some tracks resonate with the work of labels like P&P, and others echo some of the more global currents that were showing up in New York funk during the period! Most lyrics are in English, which further gives these tracks a universal appeal – and titles include "Perfect Disco Machine" and "Disco Connection" by Bindinga, "Aimiuugwia" and "Advice" by Christy Ogbah, "Xmas Eve" by Johnny O Bazz, "Look At Me" and "Shake You Body" by Mike Umoh, "You Do Good You Do For Yourself" by Godfrey Odili, "On My Mind" by Bassey Black & The Natty Messiah, and "Ariro" by Eunice Mokus Arimoku. Roy AyersStoned Soul Picnic ... LP
Atlantic/Nature Sounds, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
An early album as a leader from the great Roy Ayers – a set that captures the vibes man at a time when he'd been working on the west coast soul jazz scene, and was stepping into even greater fame in the group of Herbie Mann! Yet this set is definitely Roy's own – kind of an introduction to the more righteous sounds he'd pursue in the 70s, set up in an instrumental mode with great help from Herbie Hancock on piano, Gary Bartz on alto, Charles Tolliver on trumpet, and Hubert Laws on flute – all ultra-hip players who really bring a lot to the record! And despite the colorful cover, and its reference of a pop hit, there's a much deeper vibe going on here – on titles that include a great version of Jobim's "Wave" – done like we've never heard it before – plus the original cuts "What The People Say", "Lil's Paradise", and "A Rose For Cindy". Salsa/Vampi Soul (Spain), Early 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
Proof that hard Latin didn't always happen on the uptown scene – and a self-titled cooker from this legendary combo from Brooklyn! The record's a killer all the way through – done with some very deep, dark trombone that colors the session like the best of Johnny Colon's material from the late 60s – inflected with some brighter salsa moments in the rhythms, but all very focused and tightly held together by the rhythms! In addition to the trombone, the piano is especially nice – and other instrumentation includes a bit of organ and plenty of percussion. Most numbers have vocals – and titles include "Guaguanco De Puerto Rico", "Perdicion", "En Las Tumbas", "Rain", and "Sueltame Ya". LP, Vinyl record album

Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $39.99 44.99
One of the coolest collections of cumbia music we've ever heard – a set that focuses on the really special sounds that were being cooked up in Peru in the late 60s and early 70s – a time when there was a definite influence from rock guitar modes mixing in with Latin rhythms! The tunes chug along with all the fast-stepping crackle of later cumbia – but there's very pronounced use of guitar on most numbers – sometimes clean and lean, ala American surf instrumentals – sometimes fuzzier and freaky, with a clear psychedelic inspiration! Peru was always a bit farther from other Latin scenes, and seemed to have more freedom in cooking up their grooves – which is definitely the case in this really wonderful set! Titles include "El Avison" by Silvestre Montez Y Sus Guantanameros, "Viento" by Grupo Celeste", "Cumbia Pop" by Los Beltons, " Arre Caballito" by Manzanita Y Su Conjunto, "La Ardillita" by Los Destellos, "Beteando" by Los Beta 5, "Mujer Hilandera" by Juaneco Y Su Combo, "Malambo" by Los Diablos Rojos, and "Liliana" by Los Demonios Del Mantaro. Soul Jazz (UK), Late 1970s/1980s. New Copy ... $21.99 22.99
A killer package of tracks from the second chapter of Studio One Records – a time long after the label helped to lay some of the cornerstones for reggae, and continued to do some really amazing recordings on its own! There's definitely some later elements of styles at play here – certainly dancehall and digital modes in the music – but the set also has lots of flavors that are very different than more commercial work of the period – almost as if, after the big 70s global explosion of reggae, Studio One were set free to go back and pioneer plenty of fresh sounds of their own! The music is also from a time when the label was moving well beyond its origins in Kingston, as Clement Dodd had also set up operations way out in Brooklyn too – bringing some further cultural currents to the sounds in a really great way. Older artists mix with newer ones here – and titles include "Imperial I" by Prince Jazzbo, "Trigger Happy" by Dolly Man, "A Little Love" by Nana McLean, "Rightful Rebel" by Tyrone Taylor, "I Am Ready" by Freddie McGregor, "Eternal Peace" by Johnny Osbourne, "Bounty Hunter" by Omega, "What You Won't Do For Love" by Otis Gayle, "Revelation" by Sugar Minott, "Back To Africa" by Alton Ellis, and "Lovers Rock" by Jackie Mittoo. This is as deep as it gets! This wonderful 25 compilation is a motherlode of rare southern soul singles and lost hard soul numbers – with an all-honest, all-soulful quality that you'll be hard-pressed to find on other sets. The track selection is almost completely made up of rare numbers – most of which we'd never heard before, but which deserve to rank among the greats of the 60s. Titles include "No One Else Would Do" by Clay Hammond, "Tired Of Being Your Fool" by Nelson Sanders, "I Can't Wait" by Willie McDougal, "Young, Dumb" by Curtis Blandon, "I'm Sad About It" by Lee Moses, "Throw Away The Key" by Bell Brothers, "If I Ever Needed Your Love" by Gene Allison, "I Don't Want To Go On Without You" by Ronnie Mitchell, "You Hurt Me For The Last Time" by Otis Clay, "I Had A Nightmare" by Don Hollinger, and "No Love Have I" by Eddie Billups. Date/Nature Sounds, 1967. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Massive work from one of the funkiest drummers of all time – the legendary Bernard Pretty Purdie, stepping out here in a batch of instrumentals that may well be his greatest album ever! Bernard's drums are right up front in the mix – leading off all tunes with a full, funky, echoey sort of approach that's unlike anything else we can think of – and certainly different from any other late 60s albums of this type! The production is totally great – and has a way of pulling out some of the weirdest aspects of the music – which itself features guitar from Billy Butler and Eric Gale, bass from Bob Bushnell, tenor and flute from Seldon Powell, and organ and piano from Richard Tee – who also handled all the arrangements on the set! The centerpiece is the hit single "Funky Donkey", but just about every track's a groover in its own way – and titles include "Soul Drums", "Bill's Groove", "Jimmy's Back", "Testifyin", "Modern Jive", "Blow Your Lid", "Bee N Tee", and "Soul Bossa Nova". This new edition includes 8 bonus tracks, with a couple rare 45 tracks and more that have never been released – all soulful & funky – well paired with the Soul Drums album! Bonus tracks are in stereo, and include "Alexander's Rag Time Band", "Genuine John", "Soul Clappin", "If You Never Cried", "Stop" and "Time Is Tight". Clouse is especially strong here, and really holds his own in this top-shelf company – if not even defines some of the key moments in the set with his really free-flowing sense of imagination! Parker's presence is superb, too – almost in the background, but a key force throughout – and Swell, as always, is a master of tones and timing. The set features three long titles – "But Where", "Out On A Limb", and "Escape Velocity". CD

Soul Sounds, 2023. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
It's been a decade since the last entry in this really wonderful series – and it's clear that there's been plenty going on in the Detroit scene as well – a continuation of that old school underground that has the spirit of classic soul alive and well in the Motor City! These cuts are contemporary, but they recall the heyday of indie label 45s that were issued in the shadow of Motown – really top-shelf work that soars with a spirit that shows that in Detroit, classic soul is alive and well – even after decades of other sounds from the city! Some cuts here have a 70s vibe, some a bit of an 80s soul touch, but they're all unified through a sense of personal care and commitment to old school modes – on titles that include "Anytime You Need Love" and "So Close" by Jose Hamilton, "Singing That Song Once Again" by The Carmichael Movement, "Portuguese Love" by Ping Spells, "I Won't Let You Go" by Faschone, "More Than A Notion" by Jammie Nelson, "Sweet Summer Evenings" and "This Time Love's For Real" by JazShop, and the cuts "He's Mine", "I Get Emotional", "Give It What Cha Got", and "Bring On The Night" by The Funk Factor. Stones Throw, 2021. New Copy 2LP ... $27.99 29.99
Steve Arrington's got a long long legacy in soul music – one that goes back to his late 70s work on Slave – but he also sounds completely contemporary here, working in collaboration with a whole host of producers who were no doubt influenced by his creations of the past, and help Arrington find a whole new vibe in his music! Tunes are often spare, and served up in a blend of vocals, beats, keyboards, and guitar – yet all elements are given some cool, crispy twists and turns through a host of hip hop elements and other contemporary modes – but all at a level that only seems to bring new live to Arrington's music, and not overwhelm it. The set features work from Mndsgn, Gifted & Blessed, J Rocc, Knxwledge, Devin Morrison, and others – and titles include "Love Knows", "Keep Dreamin", "Soulful I Need That In My Life", "Make A Difference", "Joys Of Love", "It's Alright", "Make Ya Say Yie", "You're Not Ready", "Good Mood", and "Work On It". The vocals are great – blue-eyed soul, and compressed down into the instrumentation, which includes keyboards, guitar, and light strings – plus occasional flute and trumpet – all handled with this stripped-down vibe that almost makes you feel like you're sitting in with a big label act like America or Hall & Oates as they're cooking up some mellow soul tracks in the studio. An excellent compilation of raw Memphis soul – from one of the rarest singers on the famous Hi Records label! In the years before Hi Records had big hits with singers like Al Green and Ann Peebles, and when they were still mostly messing around with pop instrumental tunes, the label was fortunate enough to have the talents of the great singer Don Bryant – a rich-voiced southern singer with a mix of styles who could easily slip into the styles of singers like Tyrone Davis, Otis Redding, Johnny Taylor, and Wilson Pickett. This 70s Japanese-only set features 14 of Bryant's excellent singles for Hi! Cherry Pop (UK), Late 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Four classic albums from UK singer Tina Charles – an artist who mixes older vocal touches with the swirling sounds of the legendary Biddu – in a groove that's got a heck of a lot to offer! Tina never was one of the most underground singers of her generation – but it's her confidence in that fact that makes this music so great – an unabashed love of the poppier sounds of the dancefloor, in a way that beautifully mixes together 70s AM sensibilities with the growing sounds of the disco movement. Biddu's a great choice for the project – as the use of light strings and disco grooves resonates with his own solo work, but also maybe has more of a crossover focus, thanks to Tina's poppy vocals in the lead! The 2CD set features the full albums I Love To Love, Dance Little Lady, Heart N Soul, and Just One Smile – with a total of 40 tracks in all. CD

Giles Corey is a bluesman at heart, but he plays here in a style that's got lots of soul and funk touches too – particularly in the way he works his guitar with lots of wah-wah style riffs! The record's got a contemporary blues vibe overall, but Giles definitely has a slightly different style, too – one that's got respect for sounds that go way beyond the roots of his genre, and which showcase some of the better, later modes of Chicago blues, when it started criss-crossing a lot with other genres as well. The drums are mighty heavy – and bring an undercurrent of funk at points – and titles include "Pork & Beans", "Time Flies", "Bright Lights", "Morning Train", "That Girl Is Bad", "Home Is On My Mind", and "Watch Myself Go Crazy". The tracks have a tight jaunty feel – very much like those on Patton's mid 60s sides for Blue Note, with lots of room for each player to solo intently – but still a strong focus on the overall groove of the ensemble. The set's one of the best that we've ever heard from the Dub Store label – and almost has a Soul Jazz level of track selection – really wonderful work that either features Derrick in the lead, or working with some hip contemporaries, in a groove that's totally great – neither straight reggae, but also quite far from more familiar funk and soul too. Titles include "Black Moses" by The Preacher, "Tougher Than Tough" by I Roy, "Brown Baby" by Derrick Harriott, "Hell Below" by Crystal Generation, "Going Back Home" by The Chosen Few, "Psychedelic Train" by Derrick Harriott, "Slippery" by Karl Bryan & The Crystalites, "Home Sweet Home" by Bongo Herman & Les, "Rescue The Children" by Junior Murvin, "Phoenix" by Noel Brown, "People Make The World Go Round" by The Chosen Few, and "Message From A Black Man" by Derrick Harriott. Late work from the great Billie Holiday – the kind of mature set that made Verve Records such a perfect home for the singer in the 50s! Where other labels might have pushed too much to try to get Billie into more commercial, or more straightforward modes – Verve just relaxes into the kind of small combo sound that usually had the singer at her best – pairing Holiday with a great lineup that includes Harry Edison on trumpet, Ben Webster on tenor, Jimmy Rowles on piano, and Barney Kessel on guitar. The songs are short and focused – with Billie at the top of her form on familiar standards like "Comes Love", "Darn That Dream", "Body & Soul", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", and "Embraceable You". Columbia/J-Digs (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $41.99 49.99
Heavy funk from Japan's Soul Media combo – and one of the group's great 70s outings with the engimatic Sammy on vocals! Sammy's got this raw, raspy style that might owe a bit to Janis Joplin at times – but also nods strongly to the work of the American underground at others – more than able to stretch out with the fierce sounds of the group on the record, especially when they take on some trippy or more freaked-out styles! The drums are often nice and bold, and the electric instrumentation is very well integrated with a tight horn section that gives the tunes plenty of punch – and titles include "After Noon", "On The Grass", "Wandering Birds", "Parajika", and "Hyakunen Tattara". Luaka Bop, 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Insanely great sounds from the legendary Tim Maia – easily the most soulful singer in 70s Brazil, and an artist with a heck of a strong ear for funk, too! The music here is an incredible hybrid of American soul and Brazilian elements – especially since some lyrics are in English – and the grooves are often mixed together in a sound that's nice and fuzzy around the edges, with some slight psychedelic elements that makes the cuts a perfect fit for this Luaka Bop series! Yet Tim Maia's hardly a guy who can easily fit into any easy slot or series – because as you'll hear on this set, he's got a vibe that's all his own – a really wonderful approach that's different even from some of his hippest contemporaries in Brazil – and which has gone onto have influence on countless other generations of singers and musicians – including his nephew Ed Motta. The package is great – a real visual tribute to the sounds within – and titles include "Que Beleza", "Ela Partiu", "Do Leme Ao Pontal", "Brother Father Mother Sister", "Quer Queira Quer Nao Queira", "Let's Have A Ball Tonight", "I Don't Care", "The Dance Is Over", "Rational Culture", "You Don't Know What I Know", and "Nobody Can Live Forever". One of the funkiest records ever cut by studio jazz genius Janko Nilovic! This set definitely earns the "soul" in the title – as Janko blends his usual mad mix of studio sounds with some heavier 70s elements – including a fair bit of fuzzy guitar, funky beats, and some nice horn fills. About half the tracks on the album benefit from this sort of approach – kind of a cross between blacksploitation soundtrack scoring and the tighter instrumental moods of work by The Duke of Burlington. The other half is more in Janko's usual bag – nicely groovy jazz numbers, some with a slinky 70s edge! Cadillac (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
A completely unique slide of work from Dudu Pukwana – a side of the reedman you may never have heard before! Dudu's best known for his work in the Blue Notes – that legendary avant assemblage of South African players – and although he's also recorded in other creative settings, this may well be the first time we've heard him on a soul jazz session – burning brightly with some killer Hammond from organist Bob Stuckey! The combo's tight and right on the money – grooving live at Ronnie Scotts with the feel of some Prestige Records sax/organ group of the mid 60s – a real change for Dudu, but one we really love! Pukwana still puts in lots of unusual edges in his music – some odd tones and unusual shifts that really keep things interesting – especially giving the group's use of mostly original compositions, most by Dudu! Titles include "Jauana's Dream", "Messengers", "Kicks For Sale", "B My Dear", "Moonshine", "Kippie", and "Blessing Light". Plus, the CD features 5 more tracks by a trio that features Stuckey on Hammond and Terry Smith on guitar – "I Feel Pretty", "All Of You", "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", "Bob's Hop", and "Sweet Georgia Brown". Otis ReddingDictionary Of Soul - Complete & Unbelievable ... CD
Volt/Atlantic, 1964. Used ... $5.99
An album with a very fitting title – as the whole set is practically a dictionary of soul music, for anyone who needs an understanding of the genre! The cover alone tells you that the set is something special – and the sounds within are even better – classic Otis Redding on Stax Records, at a time when he'd already gotten his initial groove going, and was really pushing into that later, more sophisticated style that had him crossing boundaries and opening up the music for a whole new generation! Key proof of this is his remake of "Try A Little Tenderness" – a standard that had been knocking around for years, but which is exploded with a whole new emotion in Otis' version – as are tunes like "Day Tripper" and "Tennessee Waltz", with results that are maybe not as completely sublime – but which still illustrate the way that Redding was reaching way beyond the indie soul scene with his appeal. But even better are the cuts intrinsic to the album – beautiful originals that include "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)", "My Lover's Prayer", "Ton Of Joy", "I'm Sick Y'All", and "She Put The Hurt On Me" – which really demonstrate Redding's growing strengths as a songwriter. Righteous jazz, with plenty of soul – a killer collection of the mid 70s work of Lonnie Liston Smith – all based around his legendary recordings for the Flying Dutchman label! Lonnie got his start on the hippest side of the jazz spectrum – including work with Pharoah Sanders on Impulse – but by the time of these tracks, he'd found a way to beautifully mix the righteous energy of his roots with some sweet mid 70s jazz funk touches – all served up in a sublime blend of electric keyboards and acoustic piano, and often expanded with lyrics that helped Smith cross over into a soul audience too! Few artists ever handled the balance as well as Lonnie – although this work certainly inspired dozens of others to try – and the set's a beautiful testament to his lasting power, with 15 great tracks that include "Visions Of A New World", "Cosmic Funk", "Get Down Everybody", "In Search Of Truth", "Expansions", "Beautiful Woman", "Golden Dreams", "Astral Traveling", "Meditations", "Devika", "Shadows", and "Sunbeams". Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $9.99
Rare material by the legendary Three Sounds – recorded in the early 60s by Gene Harris and combo, but never issued at the time! The work follows very strongly in the best spirit of the Three Sounds' more famous albums from the time – a unique blend of soul jazz piano with some of the more sprightly pianistics that had been showing up on trio records in the 50s – never too over the top, but with enough creativity to make the group a key crowd-pleasing act at the time! Harris' work on the keys is extremely magical, and there's some tunes on the set that give the album a slightly different feel than usual. Highlights include great readings of Randy Weston's "Babe's Blues", Nat Adderley's Work Song", and Frank Rosolino's "Blue Daniel" – plus the originals "Wait A Minute" and "Lazy Cat". CD

Maybe the most evocative title of all the Three Sounds albums of the 60s – and one that really gets at the dark beauty of the entire record! By the time of this release (the group's 7th for Blue Note), Gene Harris and the trio had really come into their own – and were moving past simple soul jazz modes into this wonderful blend of grooviness and lyricism – still very much beholden to Harris' rhythmic approach to the keys, but also filled with loads of complicated lines, especially from the group's wonderful bassist Andrew Simpkins – whose round tone is especially great on the mellow numbers. Nobody deserves the title of King Of the Tenors more than Ben Webster – as his warm soulful style influenced countless players in his day, and stil sounds pretty darn great today! This early Verve LP features some excellent small combo work by Ben, playing as the main soloist in smaller groups that include players like Barney Kessel, Ray Brown, Oscar Peterson, and Harry Edison – on swing-based tunes like "Bounce Blues", "Cottontail", "That's All", and "Jive At Six". The soul of Ben Webster is always plenty deep – but it seems to sound especially so in this great small combo session for Verve – a date that features some key guest players, and which breaks the mold a bit from Ben's other dates for the label! Webster's sharing tenor chair here with Harold Ashby, and the presence of the pair makes for some really wonderful interplay, and a sound that's sometimes full, despite the small combo on the record. Some of the coolest work Kai Winding ever recorded – two very odd albums, back to back on a single CD! Soul Surfin is hardly the trombone jazz outing you might have guessed from Kai's famous work with JJ Johnson – and instead, an electrified set that's got plenty of cool 60s touches! Winding does play trombone, but the group also features lots of guitar from Kenny Burrell, electric piano from Paul Griffin, and ondioline from Jean Jacques Perry – who really gives the whole thing a cool sort of watery sound – making the guitar and trombone sound wonderful together! Burrell's at his boldest too – almost surf-ish in parts – and titles include the album's hit version of "More", plus "Gravy Waltz", "China Nights", "Pipeline", "Sukiyaki", "Tube Wall", "Sinner", and "Hearse Ride". Mondo Cane 2 is a sweet return of the cool sounds that Kai Winding cut on his Soul Surfin album – not really jazz, but a wicked hybrid of groovy 60s modes – set to larger orchestrations this time around, but still featuring some great ondioline from Jean Jacques Perry! Perry's instrument is really unique – gliding out here in ways that make the instrumental tunes cross over to worlds that Winding might never have touched before – augmented by great arrangements from Claus Ogerman, Charlie Calello, Billy Byers, and Winding himself! Think you know the sound of Atlantic Records in the 60s? Think again – because this stunning series opens the vault to a huge amount of rare treasures from the legendary label! The package is amazing – and offers up rare tracks that were mostly only issued by Atlantic on singles – including some on the other imprints associated with the company – some by names we never even knew recorded for the label, others by bigger names, but represented here by obscure material that goes way past their hits – and which is ultra cool because of that. There's also a fair bit more deep soul than you might expect from the usual Atlantic mix – tremendous vocals, and often in less hit-heavy modes – which makes the whole thing a great revelation – and just one more reason to bow down and give even more expect to one of the key companies who helped soul music find a home in the 60s. Plus – as if that's not enough – the whole thing comes in a very cool 7" gatefold package – which emphasizes the from-singles nature of the collection. Volume 3 is overflowing with amazing sounds from the heart of the 60s – rare 45rpm tracks by Atlantic stars, Stax artists, and a few lesser-knowns too. Rare work from the early years of soul music – and a special set that focuses on sounds created in and around Los Angeles – a city that's not nearly as well known for 60s soul as Chicago, Detroit, or New Orleans! Yet during the postwar years, LA had just as much going on as those eastern cities – a huge new population influx, who'd move over from the south during the wartime years – and new labels that had cropped up to capture their sounds and serve their audience! 50s LA was already humming with R&B material, which gave the rising styles of soul plenty of places to get recorded – so much so, that there's even some work on this set that was never issued at the time! The vibe is great – similar to other Birth Of Soul sets from Ace/Kent – in that the music carries a bit of R&B and blues bite from earlier years, mixed with more romping and tighter soul styles – in a smoking set list of 24 tracks that include "But What About My Broken Heart" by Don Wyatt, "Everybody's Got A Lover But Me" by Richard Berry, "Have You Heard" by The Vows, "With These Hands" by The Wonders, "You Better Watch Out Girl" by The Imperialites, "Lose My Cool" by Ike & Tina Turner, "Let Him Walk Away" by Darlene Love, "My Pillow" by The Numbers, "Help Me With My Broken Heart" by Sylvester Stewart, "That Other Guy" by The Mandarins, "Don't Drop It" by The Question Marks, and "Young Lover" by Wilks & Wilkerson. An under-discovered treasure trove of southern soul – incredible early 70s work from the Sounds Of Memphis label – arguably a hipper imprint than Stax Records at the time! Sounds Of Memphis, and related XL imprint, were a perfect showcase for the growing sophistication in southern soul at the time – the generation of artists who were shaking off the cliches of soul that played big with crossover crowds in the 60s, but which were holding back development of the music in the following decade. The styles here are every bit as rootsy as before, but they offer up new sounds, new styles, new subjects, and new singers – plus some older artists who shine even more brightly in this setting. The music here is a really special breed of soulsounds that start out in the heart-worn style of southern work of the 60s, but which also expand to encompass other modes of very expressive singers – music that definitely lives up to the "deep" in the deep soul title! Godin's been gone from the planet for a number of years, but the set list is based on suggestions he had when compiling the earlier versions of the famous series – and Dave lives again in the notes, which include an interview with the soul music expert by Jon Savage. VariousDJ Amir Presents Buena Musica Y Cultura – Good Music & Culture – Rare Latin Sounds From Across The Americas ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
One of the most fantastic collections we've ever heard from DJ Amir – a set that may well blow away his classic On/Off Track sets for the depth of its spirit and feeling! Amir's been well-known as a crate digger for many years – and while digging for funk, soul, and hip hop on the New York scene, he's also come across plenty of rare Latin nuggets – not familiar salsa or crossover Latin Soul, but instead some much deeper numbers that show just how much spirit and imagination the music had when it was at its best! Most of the numbers here are from late 60s and 70s vintage – and many have this jazzy energy that goes way past just simple grooves, and which instead features the richer colors and complicated motions of some of Eddie Palmieri's music, especially in the 70s. Titles include the previously unreleased "Salsa (parts 1 & 2)" by Fito Foster – plus "Picadillo" by La Moderna Of New York, "Bomba" by Dax Pacem, "Paranoia" by Wayne Gorbea Y Su Conjunto Salsa, "Rogelio Tiene La Salsa" by Chino Y Su Conjunto Melao, "Yo No Bailo Con Juana" by Cortijo Y Kako, "Vete De Aqui" by Joey Aponte, "Asi Asi Descarga" by Mike Hernandez Y Su Sonora Casino, "Tembelque" by Louie Colon, "El Ritmo Soledad" by Orchestra Soledad, and "El Pulpo" by Joey Pastrana. VariousEccentric Soul – The Cuca Label (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cuca/Numero, Late 1960s. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99 36.98
A treasure trove of overlooked soul tracks from the scenes in Wisconsin and Chicago back in the day! The legendary Midwest label Cuca is maybe best known for a string of great rock recordings in the 60s – searing instrumentals and raw garage tracks that firmly established their name with collectors – but the company also cut some great sounds from a variety of other artists too – offering opportunities to the kinds of soul groups and singers who might later record for bigger imprints, but were also lucky enough to get a shot at the gold via Cuca! Given the label's long rock legacy, these tracks are a really great surprise – music that moves between some of the cooler, classier modes of the Chicago scene – and some of the deeper funk that's a perfect fit for a funky 45. As always with Numero, there's a great presentation of the material – detailed notes and a superb selection of songs – with titles that include "The Long Hot Summer" and "One More Time" by Betty Moorer, "I'm Leaving You" and "I'll Say" by The Devils & Devilettes, "Glamour Girl" and "Ten Thousand Years" by Harvey Scales & The Seven Sounds, "I Love You Patricia" by The Supremes Four, "We Three" by The Twilighters, "Time After Time" by Step By Step, "It Puzzles Me" by Little Artie & The Pharoahs, "You Don't Care" by The Esquires, "Mist Of A Dream" by Birdlegs & Pauline, and "Every Step Of The Way" by Twistin Harvey. Soundway (UK), 1980s/Early 1990s. New Copy 2CDs ... $17.99 18.99
A long-overdue follow up to the legendary first Ghana Special collection – and one that presents a second chapter of work – not just from the regional scene, but from a time when some of its best artists were also recording in other nations too! The result is a more powerful, soulful style than before – not in a too-commercial "world music" way, but instead blended with elements of soul, funk, and newer club styles to really kick up the groove a bit more – while still keeping all the best elements of the 70s groove intact! There's definitely some drum machine rhythms along the way, but the overall vibe is still nice and warm – and very different than more electro-styled work from the South African scene of the time – and as always with Soundway, the notes and track selection are superb. Titles include "Ebe Ye Yie Ni" by The Godfathers, "Obiara Bewu" by Rex Gyamfi, "Kaakyire Nua" by George Darko, "Adjoa Amisa" by Andy Vans, "Barima Nsu" by Kwasi Afari Minta, "Mumude" by Nan Mayen, "Sii Nana" by Bessa Simons, "New Dance" by Ernest Honny, "Fre Me" by Charles Amoah, "Jigi Jigi" by Dadadi, "Apple" by Gyedu Blay Ambolley, "Alaiye" by Abdul Raheem, "Gye Wani" by Pat Thomas, and "MC Mambo" by Pepper Onion Ginger & Salt. Ace (UK), Mid 1960s. New Copy ... $20.99 24.99
A hip little collection, and one that's got a lot more to offer than some of the overplayed hits on other girl group compilations – and the music here really digs deep, and effortlessly blends together soul tracks and rock singles from the 60s – including a few that were never even issued at the time! The Ace Records label has been giving us great reissues from female singers for decades – and during that time, they've perfected their approach and intensified their research – so that the results of a collection like this are completely sublime! The set's overflowing with gems – and features 14 titles that include "You Had A Good Thing Goin" by The Blossoms, "Little Boy" by Karen Verros, "Your Kind Ain't No Good" by The Mirettes, "I Only Cry Once A Day Now" by The Puffs, "Baby I'm So Glad It's Raining" by The Satisfactions, "Do It" by Pat Powdrill, "Let Him Walk Away" by Darlene Love, "Bad Apple" by Linda & The Vistas, "I Know About Her" by The DC Blossoms, and "West Side Party" by The Pets. VariousGumba Fire – Bubblegum Soul & Synth Boogie In 1980s South Africa ... CD
Soundway (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
Sweet electro grooves from the South African scene of the 80s – funky, soulful sides that are quite different than some of the nation's sounds that were getting bigger global play at the time! The 80s was a time of great worldwide awareness of the political struggles of South Africa and its people – and much of the musical exports were focused on righteous sounds that reflected that moment. Yet back at home, some of the biggest cuts were more playful and party-oriented – maybe provided as a respite from the challenges of society – as very clubby modes were an antidote to the hardship of life in New York. The grooves here are quite far from the sorts that Paul Simon and his compatriots were pushing up north – and much of this music is a fusion of 80s electro soul with more regional elements and maybe a bit of influence from the Caribbean – a bit like the clubby cross-cultural sounds from Paris at the start of the decade, but maybe a bit more gritty and beat-heavy overall. This set's one of the first to really dig deep into this generation for a global audience, and it's presented with the usual sense of care and history we've come to expect from Soundway Records – in a set of 15 tracks that include "My Brother" by The Survivals, "Mind Games" by Stimela, "Wayawaya" by Zoom, "Heartbeat" by Monwa & Sun, "Selallane" by Black Five, "Picnicing" by Starlight, "Africa" by Sabela, "Arrow Dub" by Zasha, "Listen To Me" by General Peter Maringa, and "She's Impossible" by Condry Ziqubu. VariousHaving A Rave Up – The British R&B Sounds Of 1964 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Mid 1960s. New Copy 3CDs ... $29.99 36.99
The grittier side of the UK scene in the mid 60s – a whole host of work by groups who were strongly influenced by American soul, blues, and R&B – but were also really starting to put together sounds that were very much their own! The Rolling Stones were obviously the biggest stars of this moment – but this set digs much deeper, and brings out a fair bit of work that never made it over to our side of the Atlantic – mixed with very early cuts from artists that you might know from much bigger records later on! And while there's definitely a soulful current running through the music, most of these acts are more rock than anything else – although a few important acts also bring in some nice elements of jazz too. The 3CD set has a massive 91 tracks in all – all with great notes inside – and as you might guess from the title reference, The Yardbirds are included in the lineup – next to others who include The Talismen, Shades Of Blue, Mike Cotton Sound, Fuzz, The Iveys, The Hoochie Coochie Men, Original Four-Tunes, Nashville Teens, The Bad Boys, Stylos, Zombies, Art Wood Combo, Remo Four, Toggery Five, The Plebs, Screaming Lord Sutch, Soul Agents, Saxons, The Kinks, Mickey Finn & The Blue Men, Group 5, Shel Naylor, Cops N Robbers, and dozens of others! Light In The Attic, Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... On November 29, 2024
A mindblowing musical discovery – funky music made in Canada by expatriate Jamaicans – easily some of the most obscure post-colonial grooves we've ever dug! The sound here is a lot less reggae-based than you'd expect – as most of the tunes are in a really nitty gritty funky 45 sort of mode – filled with strong influences from American soul of the late 60s and early 70s, but often done with a style that's a bit dirtier and fuzzier, especially at the bottom of the rhythms. There's a few traces of Jamaican production styles on the records, but overall the album's more like finding a lost stash of rare 45s from some smaller American funk scene – all work that's totally darn fresh, and beautifully presented here in a lavish booklet filled with enough notes and vintage images to rival the work coming out of the Numero camp of late! Great stuff all around, with titles that include "Chips Chicken Banana Split" and "Fugitive Song" by Jo Jo & The Fugitives, "Eternal Love" by The Sheiks, "Memories" by Noel Ellis, "Right On" and "I Wish It Would Rain" by The Cougars, "Grand Funk" by Jackie Mittoo, "Love Is The Answer" by Ram, "You're So Good To Me Baby" by Eddie Spencer, "Mr Fortune" by The Hitch-Hikers with Mighty Pope, "Fire (She Need Water)" by Wayne McGhie & The Sounds Of Joy, and "I Believe In Music" by Bob & Wisdom. A great little set of rare soul music – served up by the Cairo imprint of Mississippi Records – and done with a very similar approach to their other reissues of folk, blues, and world music! The set focuses in on rootsier sounds, especially from the 60s – with lots of deep soul gems from both big names and some more obscure artists – all packaged with a detailed booklet of notes, in the best Mississippi style! Ace/BGP (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 34.99
Disco grooves from a source you might not expect – the Japanese scene of the 70s, which was home to a surprisingly strong array of records that were perfect for the clubs! In retrospect, maybe the music's not such a surprise – given that 70s Japan was also a hotbed of electric fusion, and the kind of sharp instrumentation that provides the core to most of these tunes – wicked basslines, sweet keyboards, and funky drums that propel these tracks along in a wonderful way – even if you can't understand some of the Japanese lyrics over the top! In fact, many of these numbers are even more in the fusion or funk-inspired side of disco – less the crossover cuts with strings and big production, and more like the kind of American club tracks you might hear from Kudu Records or some of the other fusion labels. The package is proof that great sounds can be truly universal – and comes with detailed notes on the artists and scene at the time. Titles include "By By Session Band" by Lily, "Summer Champion" by Yuko Asano, "Dancin" by Junko Ohashi, "Rainbow Parade" by Masayoshi Takanaka, "Uragiri" by Mari Natuski, "Maboroshi No Hito" by Miyako Chaki, "Banana" by Kay Ishiguro, "Yashow Macashow" by Ebonee Webb, "Lovin Mighty Fire" by Nayoya Matsuko & Minako Yoshida, "Sentimental Hotel" by Rie Nkahara, and "Barato Yajuu" by Haruomi Hosono. VariousMasterpieces Of Modern Soul ... CD
Kent (UK), 1970s. Used ... $6.99 8.99
Ultra-hip soul from the 70s – a brilliant collection of underground tunes that represents some of the best of the decade's indie scene! The title says "modern", but the groove here is also pretty darn deep – as many of the tracks on the set have nice touches of southern soul, despite the smoother 70s production overall. Vocals are extremely heartfelt, and most tracks are in a mellow or midtempo pace – making for a really wonderful batch of tunes that moves away from the more uptempo and clubby sounds you might hear on other modern soul compilations. The set's a very unique take on the music, with a total of 22 tracks in all – most of them probably pretty new to your ears! Titles include "Ain't No Telling" by The Houston Outlaws, "Chase Those Clouds Away" by Sam Nesbit, "Fair Warning" by Ted Taylor, "I'm Me Just Me" by Gil Billingsley, "Come Through Me" by Garland Green, "I'm A Lonely Man" by Al Christian, "Bringin Me Back Home" by Lou Pride, "I Call It Love" by The Pretenders, "Second Hand Love" by Lynn Varnado, "Love Me Baby" by Tender Loving Care, and "What Can I Do, I'm In Love With You" by Jean Shy. Dub Store (Japan), 1966/1967. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $35.99 38.99
Fantastic sounds from the rocksteady years in Jamaica – tracks that are a fair bit more rare and obscure than some of the bigger singles that circulated at the time – even though they feature a fair bit of the same artists and musicians! The work here all came from the studios of Federal Records – one of the first indies in Kingston, headed by the visionary Ken Khouri – who put things together and learned the process as he went – which often made for a very organic approach to the music! Khouri handled a lot of other Jamaican styles in the years before these sides – but he really seems to have hit his stride with rocksteady – coming up with a perfect balance between the new rhythms, the sharp instrumentation, and the soulful styles of the singers. Titles on this second volume include "Real Gone Sweet" by The Tartans, "Walk On By" by The Zodiacs, "We Gonna Make It" by The Termites, "Fountain Bliss" by The Dynamites, "This Music Got Soul" by Hopeton Lewis, "Batman (early take rehearsal)" by Lynn Taitt & The Jets, "I Don't Want Trouble" by Hopeton Lewis, "Rolling Rolling" by The Tartans, "Lester Sterling Special" by Lester Sterling, "Take Me Back" by Henry Buckley, and "Sounds Of Silence" by Roland Alphonso. Detour (UK), Late 1960s. New Copy ... $22.99 29.99
Don't let the 21st Century in the title fool you – as these are all vintage 60s tracks, all with a great little groove – most of which are so obscure, they've never gotten the right sort of love until decades after they were recorded! The set's filled with treasures that have been uncovered in recent years by the deep-digging fans of rare mod and freakbeat releases from back in the day – ultra-cool cuts that are heavy on British styles, but also include some rare Latin cuts – all of which have plenty of kicked up rhythms that have gotten them strong play on dancefloors – especially those on the Modstock scene that have really helped support the music! In British terms, think of the set as the same dive into rare sounds that you might find in a Northern Soul compilation – different musical styles, of course – but a strong commitment to tunes that are great, but obscure – with titles that include "You & I Are Through" by Kenny & Larry, "Forever Bliss" by Chalklit Milk Revue, "Mary Mary" by Normie Rowe, "A Certain Kind Of Girl" by The Realm, "Thinkin" by Voices Incorporated, "The Latin Skate" by The Cheap Skates, "Mr Mod" by Latin Dimension, "Caballo Psicodelico" by Leo Soto, "Women" by Dean Jones, and "Main St Mission" by Albert Excobodo & The Majestics. 16 tracks on the LP. Time Capsule (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $39.99 44.99
A record that picks up on a very particular strand of Japanese music in the 70s – and one that's maybe not even fully described with all the evocative words in the title! The sounds here are leaner and more open than work you'd know from the city pop years – but also not like Japanese rock of the late 60s, and maybe not even like some of the bigger names of the 70s who crossed over to American audiences. Instead, the whole package is very creative and inventive – certainly with currents of psych and soul, but often moving into territories that really defy easy categorization – as if these Japanese artists feel free to pick and choose whatever they want to put in the mix! The sound is great, and the album is a treasure trove of discoveries – with sounds that include "Aoi Galasu Dama Blue Glass Ball" by Yoshiko Sai, "Have You Smoked Gauloise" by Hiroshi Kamayatsu, "Jikan Wo Koero Go Beyond Time" by Tadashi Goino Group, "Omae You" by Jun Fukamachi, and "Hachigatsu No Inshow Augusts Impression" by Momotaro Pink. Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $39.99 44.99
The great Bobby Marin is kind of a secret star of Latin music – not nearly as well-publicized as some of the bigger names on the front cover of records on labels like Fania, Alegre, or Cotique – but one with a stunning legacy of music on his own as both an artist and producer! Bobby worked hard on the Latin Soul scene in late 60s New York – and as you'll hear here, he created a wealth of wonderful boogaloo tracks – which then lead into some killer salsa work in the 70s, and further experiments in other modes too! Marin's music was often under-released, but has been circulating on reissues more often in recent years – yet this huge package is maybe the first to fully give the man his due – and present all his recordings in all their glory! The 24 track set has a wonderful scope of sounds – and titles include "Come Live With Me" by Herbie Oliveri & The Latin Blues Band, "Got This Happy Feeling" by The Ghetto Brothers, "Do It" by Los Africanos, "Undress My Mind" by Ocho, "Gimme Take It (Bobby Marin edit)" by Louie Ramirez, "Jumpin Around" by Johnny Rodriguez & Angel Rene, "Hey Mama" by La Cucaracha Brass, "Mojo Shingaling" by 107th Street Stickball Team, "Lucy's Spanish Harlem" by Louie Ramirez, "Neath The Heat Of The Summer Sun" by Bobby Marin & The Latin Chords, "Hey Mr Skyjacker" by Richie & The PS 54 Schoolyard, and "What I Feel" by Ricardo Marrero & The Group. A really mind-bending collection of African grooves – one that digs deep into the West African scene of the early 70s – and comes up with a massive batch of tunes that really opens up our understanding of the music! The sound here isn't just 70s Afro Funk – as the tunes include a range of tripped-out styles that make the best use of electric instrumentation, psychedelic production, and important influences from American soul artists at the time. There's some amazing guitar on some of the best tracks – ringing out with a sound that's chromatically complex while also being tripped-out and funky – in a way that complicates the rhythms without totally taking them apart. If you've dug the tunes on previous sets like Africa Funk or Ghana Soundz, this is one to take that sound to the next level – and really open up your ears! Titles include "Keleya" by Moussa Doumbia, "Love's A Real Thing" by The Super Eagles, "Minsato Le Mi Dyihome" by Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo De Cotonou Dahomey, "Porry" by Sorry Bamba, "Allah Wakbarr" by Ofo & The Black Company, "Sanjina" by Orchestre Regional De Kayes, "Ifa" by Tunji Oyelana & The Benders, and "Zinabu" by Bunzu Sounds. The groovier side of the mod scene in 60s London – music that's not just rock, but which mixes together jazzy instrumentals, soulful stompers, and other wild sounds – all created by British groups who were bursting with new ideas at the time! The music is as bursting with color as the image on the front cover – and the collection is way different than other mod mixes on the market – with no American soul, less British blues, and plenty of unfamiliar cuts that makes the whole thing a treasure trove in groovy music from the English scene at the time! The package comes with a hefty booklet of notes, tracking the groups and the tunes – a stack of 93 great cuts, with work from Basil Kirchin, Mood Mosaic, The Troggs, Creation, London Studio Group, Kiki Dee, The End, Mike Cotton Sound, The Knack, Des James, Twinkle, Artwoods, Easybeats, Carl Douglas & The Big Stampede, Georgie Fame, Moon's Train, Richard Kent Style, Wynder K Frog, The Syn, Dana Gillespie, Miki Dallon, The Mickey Finn, Stan Butcher, Miss X, Mandy Rice-Davies, The Hi-Fis, Electric Banana, and dozens of others! The title says it all – as Yusef Lateef works here in that wonderful mixture of hardbop, soul jazz, and Eastern stylings that he brought to all of his best early sessions as a leader! Lateef himself is playing tenor, flute, and oboe – which he uses to craft these eerie snakecharmer lines that work perfectly with the modal grooves of the tracks – very unusual rhythms for the time, and a real precursor to some of the world jazz experiments to come from overseas. The rest of the group features pianist Barry Harris, drummer Lex Humphries, and bassist Ernie Farrow, who also plays a strange instrument called a rabat – which further adds to the charm of the record. Luaka Bop, 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Birchmount, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lost funky soul from Toronto – receiving a proper release for the first time! Vocalist, guitarist and bass player Wayne McGhie recorded rock steady sessions with Studio One vets like Jackie Mittoo before pushing forward as a leader on this rare funk and soul album. It features six McGhie originals and a number of loose, hard soul/funk workouts of hits from the time. The standout track here is McGhie's centerpiece masterpiece "Dirty Funk" – a straight up instrumental funk monster – with these loose, funky guitar chordings, deeply grooving organ and tight, hard hitting drum breaks! Other tracks run the gamut from funk numbers, to loose, heavy soul covers. 12 musicians are credited, with back up horn section, piano and harpsichord and the ever present organ (Ike Bennet and L. Delpratt) and walloping drums (J. Joseph and Everett Paul). The large group never gets in the way of the loose, steady groove – a style surely learned during McGhie's days playing calypso and rock steady. Nice stuff – finally unearthed! Tracks include "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye", "When I Think Of Home", "Take A Letter Maria", "Woman Be Good", "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", "Cool It" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic album, and one of Jimmy's hardest to find! The set is quite different than most of Jimmy's other work – and it features short, hard, funky tracks that feel more like obscure 7" singles than any of Jimmy's straighter soul jazz work. It almost sounds like The JBs are backing him – as the drums are tight, bass is great, and the overall groove is fantastic! The record's a little like Jimmy's Electric Funk album, but harder, with more breaks and basslines – and a non-stop groove that's a pure delight for any fan of deep funk! Great stuff, with "Ain't It Funky Now", "The Now Thing", "Fat Cakes", "New Volume", and "Bug Out". LP, Vinyl record album

A landmark album – one that has the beat-heavy Quantic transform into the Quantic Soul Orchestra, for a stunning deep funk performance! The record sounds like nothing Quantic have done in the past – and shares a sound with work from the Soul Fire/Daptone underground, with a tight blend of hard drums, fast-riffing guitar, and all-solid 70s funky grooves. The one element that we would say the record shares with Quantic is a real talent for picking up neat instrumental twists – like the odd flute fill, string wash, or off-kilter drum sound – all of which make for a record that really opens up the genre of deep funk, and makes for one of the freshest releases we've heard of its type in a while! Includes a great deep funk cover of 4 Hero's "Hold It Down", plus the tracks "Terrapin", "Something That's Real", "South Coastin", "Stampede", "Raw Ingredients", "Babarabatiri", and "Take Your Time Change Your Mind". A brilliant set of Latin jazz from Poncho Sanchez – proof that he was one of the few musicians who really kept the classic sounds going during the 80s! The album's got a tight small group format that benefits from some especially great horn work from Gene Burkert on alto and tenor, Sal Cracchilo on trumpet, and Art Velsasco on trombone – all players who are often arranged with a real sharpness on the heads – that modern edge that first started coming strongly into Latin jazz during the years of Eddie Palmieri's best work. Charlie Otwell's the pianist on the date, and he contributed some great tunes to the record – including "Song For Cal", "A Night In London", "Chile Con Soul", "Nueva Charanga", and "Quieto". Cuca/Numero, Late 1960s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic tribute to the legendary Free Soul series from Japan – that run of compilations and reissues that first started back in the 90s, but which really turned us on to sounds from the 70s that we never would have heard otherwise! The Free Soul approach is a bit hard to describe in words – soulful music, but often with an upbeat, positive sort of vibe – not chart hits, disco tracks, deep funk, or other modes – but a special way of listening to soul music that's gone on to become a genre unto itself, thanks to the work of legendary compiler Toru Hashimoto – who's given us other fantastic collections over the years. 2CD set is overflowing with 43 overlooked gems – and titles include "It's You" by Joyce Cooling, "I Do My Best To Impress" by Linda Lewis, "Changin" by Sharon Ridley, "World Full Of People" by Peoples Pleasure with Alive & Well, "Feelin Mellow" by Weldon Irvine, "Ray Of Hope" by Soul Generation, "Look At Me Look At You" by Marlena Shaw, "What Else Can I Say" by Ingram, "Ordinary Joe" by Terry Callier, "Chocolate Buttermilk" by Kool & The Gang, "Battened Ships" by Odyssey, "That's What You Say" by Gloria Scott, and "Yes It's You" by Sweet Charles. Sweet sounds from the soulful 70s – a massive batch of music that definitely earns the "masterpiece" in the title! The collection focuses on one of our favorite styles of the 70s – that warmly grooving mode that came to be known as "modern soul" – partly in contrast to the faster styles of Northern, and partly because there was a tightness of production and sophistication of arrangements that really pushed the whole groove forward! Work here is from a range of different scenes, and it's all pretty darn great – and all pretty darn obscure, too – no too-familiar tracks to clog up your listening, and instead a real discovery of gems that need to be rediscovered. The title says it all – as the CD features 24 classic group harmony tunes from those days when the doo wop sound was turning into soul! The track selection is great – especially as most of these tunes are ones that you'd only ever find on rare 45s, which is where it appears that most of the set was mastered from. Still, you can easily forgive the crackles on the tunes when you've got a great set of music like this. Titles include "Sad Avenue" by The Chancellors, "This Love Of Ours" by The Sunlovers, "Tillie" by The Earles, "Lost Legend" by Four Grand, "The Stars Will Remember" by The Idols, "The Guy" by Fannie & The Varcells, "Never" by The Dundees, "Judy" by Ronnie Love & The Group, "This Lovely Night" by The Alteers, "Present of Love" by Armonda & The Jays, "I Need You" by The Utmosts, "Telegram" by Carl Holmes & The Commanders, and "New York City" by Harvey & The Seven Sounds. A real lost chapter in the James Brown legacy of soul – tracks that The Godfather issued on a branch of TK Records, right during the same time he was cutting some familiar funk classics on the Polydor and People Records labels! The music here is an offshoot of the Funky People universe that James was serving up on People – in that much of the material here was by members of the James Brown stage show, given their own chance in the spotlight – but with Brown himself handling most of the work on the record. Heavy Sounds, indeed – a beautiful little set of dark-edged soul jazz from the mid 60s – co-led by bassist Richard Davis and drummer Elvin Jones! The sound here is a bit different than any work ever released by either player as a leader – and is almost more in the vein of Blue Note or Prestige work of the same period – hardbop turned towards more soulful notes, but also still touched with a degree of modernism. A key element in the group is Frank Foster on tenor – whose blowing here is superb, and really on a par with his own albums as a leader from the time – marking a strong sound away from too many years of Basie influences! Frank does a killer job on his own "Raunchy Rita", taken here in a nice sexy groove, and stretched out nice and long with a very sinister feel – and other tracks include "ME", "Summertime", and "Elvin's Guitar Blues", which actually features Jones on guitar! Wickedly hip work from Cannonball Adderley – and one of his real standout sessions for Capitol Records in the 60s! The set lives up to its "Africa" promise right from the very first note – and features a set of loud, proud tunes that really bring out the righteous sounds of this generation of new liberation – tunes that sparkle with lead alto and soprano sax from Cannon, but which really draw even more energy from the whole collective of musicians on the record – a hip lineup led by HB Barnum, who also did all the arrangements for the set! The result is a record that's unlike any of Adderley's other albums – from some of the evocative snakey lines on the top, to the hip mix of 60s Cali soul and African percussion on the bottom. A great session from 1959 – one that features John Coltrane playing tenor in a combo that's billed as being led by altoist Cannonball Adderley – but which is really more of a Miles Davis combo, without Miles! The set was recorded in Chicago when both were stopping through the city with Miles Davis' combo at the time – and since the rhythm section includes Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – the album's essentially a Kind Of Blue-era Miles album, recorded without Miles on trumpet, and grooving in a slightly more soul-based Adderley mode! Given the presence of Coltrane, there's a bit less of the gutbuckety soul jazz that Cannon was cutting in his own Quintet – but that's more than ok with us, as the Coltrane solos more than make up for that difference! The set's got 2 great originals by Coltrane – "The Sleeper" and "Grand Central" – plus the cuts "Wabash" and "Limehouse Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Beautiful sounds from pianist Monty Alexander – and a record that really has him finding his own groove! Monty had recorded often in the 60s, and usually mixed his Caribbean roots with a bit of American soul jazz – but it really took the MPS label to help him find a spot to set himself free and really open up with his own sort of voice! Alexander soars with a sense of joy and imagination right from the very first note – getting help from Eugene Wright on bass, Duffy Jackson on drums, and the great Montego Joe on congas – in a mode that's maybe Monty's contribution to finding a Caribbean sound in jazz piano the way that work of Randy Weston and Dollar Brand were towards a more African-oriented heritage. The colors and phrasing of Alexander's touch on the keys is already pretty darn unique, and the rhythmic impulses send things home even more – on titles that include a great funky remake of "Here Comes The Sun" – plus "Where Is Love", "Montevideo", "Brown Skin Girl", and "So What".
