VariousHyperituals Vol 1 – Soul Note ... LP
Soul Note/Hyperjazz (Italy), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $32.99 42.99
A deep dive into the catalog of the legendary Soul Note label – the Italian imprint that became a huge host to American jazz musicians in the late 70s onwards – a company that helped to evolve both spiritual and loft jazz modes, and continue the legacy of free-thinking expression that was begun in the shadow of John Coltrane! The choice of cuts here is great – tracks that go past some of the obvious classics of the label, but which also resonate with those moments too – a well-chosen array of tracks that often focus on more rhythmic moments of the label, with strong spiritual and modal currents throughout. Titles include "Rain Shout" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Olduvai George" by Dannie Richmond, "Mwalimu" by Max Roach, "Ondas" by Nana Vasconcelos & Antonello Salis, "Aladdin's Castle" by Beaver Harris, "Hide & Go Seek" by Paul Motian, "Spirits Return" by Tony Scott, "Tribute To Bu (take 1)" by Andrew Cyrille, "Bouka" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Nagual Julian" by Billy Bang, "The Earth Spins" by Adam Rudolph, "Cubano Be Cubano Bop" by George Russell, and "Nu Tune" by Hamiet Bluiett. VariousYou Need This – An Introduction To Black Saint & Soul Note Records 1975 to 1985 (3LP set) ... LP
Black Saint/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $39.99 46.99
A tremendous look at one of the coolest jazz labels of all time – and one that has an especially strong focus on the more spiritual side of its music! The paired Black Saint and Soul Note labels came along from the Italian scene right at a time when so many other American companies were shutting their doors – former spiritual jazz powerhouses like Strata East, Impulse, and Black Jazz were moving beyond the music, or disappearing entirely – which made the role of Black Saint/Soul Note such a crucial one! The company came into the game at a time of boundless creativity in American jazz – and really captured a post-Coltrane generation that was brimming over with fire and new ideas, but just needed a place to find expression – which it did at the label, who recorded dozens of albums in the space of less than a decade, nearly all of which have gone onto become classics over the years. And while there's a side of the label that's much more free jazz and avant garde, the cuts here reflect a Black Saint/Soul Note that's just slightly inside – tunes that are still freewheeling, but also have a rhythmic core – and the kinds of open, soaring solos that were first inspired in the 60s generation of Coltrane and Shepp. The choice of cuts is great – similar to the others in the If Music series – and titles include "Mr Seven" by M'Booom, "Joycie Girl" by Don Pullen with Sam Rivers, "Il Giro Del Giorno In 80 Mondi" by Enrico Rava, "Oasis" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Confessin" by John Stubblefield, "Joobubie" by George Adams & Dannie Richmond, "Verde Que Eu Te Quero Ver" by Rava String Band, "Down Home In New York" by Archie Shepp, "BK" by Air, and "The Nagual Julian" by Billy Bang Sextet. ✨✧ Muhal Richard AbramsComplete Remastered Recordings On Black Saint & Soul Note (8CD set) ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1980s/Early 90s. Used 8 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Some of our favorite albums ever from pianist Muhal Richard Abrams – an amazing run of eight records for the Black Saint/Soul Note label – rich in fresh colors, tones, and new musical ideas! There's a sensitivity to some of these records that you don't always get with Abrams – a personal feeling that brings in a much-needed warmth to his complex compositional forms – often in collaboration with other players on the Chicago scene, but also with a wider range of avant players, especially from New York – where Abrams would have a great influence in the 80s. The lineup of musicians here is wonderful – a virtual who's-who of the jazz left at the time, at least from an American perspective – with performances from George Lewis, Roscoe Mitchell, Amina Myers, Thurman Barker, Baikida Carroll, Andrew Cyrille, Craig Harris, Stanton Davis, Marty Erlich, Dick Griffin, Cecil Bridgewater, Fred Hopkins, Dierdre Murray, and so many others. The set features 8 full albums, each in a tiny LP-styled sleeve – and titles include Siphumonesty, Mama & Daddy, Blues Forever, Rejoicing With The Light, View From Within, Hearinga Suite, Blu Blu Blu, and Think All Focus One. Black Saint (Italy), Late 70s/1980s. Used 9 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Music from one of the greatest periods ever for AACM legend Muhal Richard Abrams – a time when the pianist was opening up in so many different creative directions! The first volume of this Black Saint/Soul Note series was great, but we almost like this one even better – as it features some of Abrams' more personal, more intimate recordings – which are a real revelation if you only know his bigger compositions or work with large ensembles. We love this side of Abrams as an improviser – and albums include Sightsong, with bassist Malachi Favors; Lifelong Ambitions with violinist Leroy Jenkins; Duet with pianist Amina Claudine Myers; and Duets & Solos with saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell. Other albums include 1-OQA+19, with Anthony Braxton (as you might guess from the title), Steve McCall, and Henry Threadgill; Colors In Thirty Third, with John Blake, Dave Holland, Fred Hopkins, and Andrew Cyrille; Song For All, with Eddie Allen, Craig Harris, and others; and Familytalk, with Jack Walrath, Warren Smith, and Patience Higgins. Also includes the great date led by trombonist George Lewis – Shadowgraph 5 (Sextet) – which also features Anthony Davis, Douglas Ewart, Roscoe Mitchell, Leroy Jenkins, and Abdul Wadud. All albums come in tiny record-style sleeves – and the box features 9 records in all! CD

Black Saint (Italy), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. Used 9CD ... Out Of Stock
A huge run of greatness from Roscoe Mitchell – one of the most important musicians to come out of the AACM scene in Chicago, and a player who may well have been one of the best to really flower in the freedoms offered by the Black Saint/Soul Note label! By the time of these records, Mitchell had already made classic albums on his own, and with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – but these sides represent Roscoe reaching great new heights as a leader – trying out a variety of different groups and new ideas, and both expanding the overall AACM palette, while also reaching out to new scenes as well. Every record is a little bit different, and the groups are too – as Mitchell works with his Sound Ensemble that includes Hugh Ragin and Spencer Barefield, the Sound & Space Ensembles with Mike Mossman and Tom Buckner, the Roscoe Mitchell Quartet with Malachi Favors and Steve McCall, the Note Factory with Matthew Shipp and William Parker, a Sextet with Muhal Richard Abrams and Anthony Davis, and in duets with Borah Bergman on one record, and Muhal Richard Abrams on another! Every album comes in a small sleeve with its original artwork – and the box features the albums 3X4 Eye, Roscoe Mitchell & The Sound & Space Ensembles, The Flow Of Things, Live At The Knitting Factory, Duets & solos, This Dance Is For Steve McCall, The Italian Concert, Shadowgraph 5, and Spihumonesty. Black Saint (Italy), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 5CD ... Out Of Stock
Some of the greatest albums ever from tenorist George Adams – packaged together here in a sweet set that also features the CDs in tiny LP-styled covers! Much of the music here was done in collaboration with fellow members of Charles Mingus' group – three albums with pianist Don Pullen, and all with drummer Dannie Richmond – players who are very simpatico with Adams' vibe, as they all together find rich new ground after the passing of Mingus. There's a soulful swing to most of the records – that way that Adams and Pullen had of being sharply creative, yet still rooted in straighter jazz modes too – balancing both impulses perfectly, especially over the progression of albums in this set. The package includes tiny LP-styled reproductions of the records Don't Lose Control, Hand To Hand, Gentleman's Agreement, and Live At The Village Vanguard Volumes 1 & 2. CD

Black Saint (Italy), 1980s. Used 9 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The complete Black Saint/Soul Note recordings of Bill Dixon – an amazing body of work that represents one of the strongest points in Dixon's career! Bill first burst on the scene with some important 60s avant albums on the Savoy label – including a key collaboration with Archie Shepp – but it wasn't until these 80s sides for the Italian label that his talents really took off – reaching out to new heights that explored some of the more serious themes in his music, often in longer-form conceptual recordings that are a great illustration of the freedoms offered by the label! The records also feature Bill working closely with a host of important musicians – including bassists Alan Silva, Peter Kowald, William Parker, and Barry Guy – and drummers Tony Oxley and Freddie Waits. The set features 9 full albums, each packaged in a mini LP-style sleeve – and titles include Bill Dixon In Italy Vol 1, Bill Dixon In Italy Vol 2, November 1981, Thoughts, Son Of Sisyphus, Vade Mecum, Vade Mecum 2, Papyrus Vol 1, and Papyrus Vol 2. Blue Note continues their strong tradition of well-packaged samplers from the old days – this time dipping into the 1970s years of the catalog, and copping a few extra tracks from the related Capitol/EMI labels. A few cuts here have been issued on other sets over the years – but at this price, the set's still a great package of 11 soulful funky tracks, with titles that include "Friends & Strangers" by Ronnie Laws, "Can't Hide Love" by Carmen McRae, "Think Twice" by Donald Byrd, "Spinning Wheel" by Lonnie Smith, "Feel Like Makin Love" by Marlena Shaw, "Acuphuncture" by Eddie Henderson, "Uno Esta" by Bobbi Humphrey, "VO" by Chico Hamilton, "Music Is My Sanctuary" by Gary Bartz, and "Down Here On The Ground" by Grant Green. Blue Note (Japan), Mid 60s. Used ... $29.99
George Braith is one of our favorites! His style of playing odd reed instruments, sometimes simultaneously, is a lot like Roland Kirk, but he has more of a swingin' hard bop feel to his music than Kirk. This LP, cut with Grant Green, and the great, underrated organ of Billy Gardner, has a very similar feel to the Larry Young/Grant Green efforts. The groove is funky, but also really modal – and the solos stretch a lot farther than you'd expect! Titles include "Jo Anne", "Boop Bop Bing", "Billy Told", and "Soul Stream". CD

Mosaic/Blue Note, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... $44.99
5 of the best records ever by trombonist Bennie Green – a hell of a soulful player who cut some killer late 50s albums for Blue Note! The set features 3 albums issued under Green's own name – Walkin & Talkin, Back On The Scene, and Soul Stirrin – plus one more album's worth of material that was only issued on 45s (45 Session), and the quite rare Congo Lament – originally recorded in 1962, but not issued until 1980, and even then only briefly, under the name of Ike Quebec. Together, the 5 albums give a fantastic picture of Green's genius – really driving tunes that crackle with energy, and which feature trombone work that's tighter than that of most trumpeters of the time – and which really brings together the best uses of bass and brass that the instrument allows. Players on the sessions include Sonny Clark, Charlie Rouse, Billy Root, Gene Ammons, Elvin Jones, Gildo Mahones, and Art Blakey – and Babs Gonzales even sings on a few tracks! Titles include "Soul Stirrin", "We Wanna Cook", "BG Mambo", "Que's Pill", "IQ Shuffle", "Encore", "It's Groovy", "Green Leaves", and "The Shouter". 33 tracks in all! CD

Hank MobleySoul Station ... LP
Blue Note, 1960. Near Mint- ... $29.99
One of the key classics from the hardbop years of Blue Note – the kind of album that really set the label apart from the rest at the time! Soul Station is a deceptively simple album that has tenor giant Hank Mobley playing standards and originals in a quartet with Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Blakey on drums– a spare and simple group, but one with a direct energy that's really amazing – in a way that makes for some of Mobley's best solos on record! The tracks here are all relatively basic in construction, but this territory allows all players to really relax and open up – especially Mobley, who really dominates the proceedings with some well-blown lines on tenor. Blakey's work is great too – nicely restrained, and the date marks one of his last sessions ever as a sideman. Titles include "Soul Station", "Split Feelin's", "Dig Dis", and "This I Dig Of You". Late 60s repackaging of the Swing & Soul album, a rare one by Lou! Pure genius from Lou Donaldson – proof that his voice on the alto sax was one of the freshest in the post-Charlie Parker years! Lou's blowing here with a lively intensity that's clearly inspired by Parker, but which diverges from it quite a bit – taking a similar blend of inspiration and rediscovery that Jackie McLean was using on his Blue Note sessions of the time, but going in a much more soul-based direction than Jackie ever did. The group on the set's great too – with Donaldson's frequent accompanist Herman Foster on piano, always a treat on any set – plus Peck Morrison on bass, Dave Bailey on drums, and Ray Barretto kicking up a nice little groove on conga! A pivotal record from Lou Donaldson – one that has him forging out some of his first funky soul jazz sounds, moving from his bop roots, and working with a hip young group that includes Grant Green and John Patton, both of whom he discovered and brought to Blue Note (thanks Lou!) The tracks have a tight jaunty feel – very much like those on Patton's mid 60s sides for Blue Note, with lots of room for each player to solo intently – but still a strong focus on the overall groove of the ensemble. Cover's very nice – and tracks include "Funky Mama", "Spaceman Twist", and "Nice n Greasy". CD features one bonus track too – "People Will Say We're In Love". CD

An excellent set of sophisticated soul cuts from Marlena Shaw – and a album that more than lives up to the title! Marlena really sparkles here – thanks to impeccable arrangements by Wade Marcus that perfectly mix together jazz and soul – finding that unique space that Shaw and a handful of other singers were exploring at the time. As with some of her other Blue Note albums, the record's got a great sense of cohesion – beginning with a nice dramatic prelude, which then gives way to sublime vocals from Marlena. Along with the soulful strings, the instrumentation includes lots of clavinet and electric piano – another nice approach, one that ushers a little bit of funk into the mix – and titles include "Easy Evil", "Hum This Song", "But For Now", "The Feeling's Good", "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely", Wildflower", "Waterfall", and "Say A Good Word". Blue Note, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
A key meeting between the Three Sounds trio and the amazing Monk Higgins – done at a time when Higgins was taking his Chicago-crafted grooves to work on the west coast – and doing some really wonderful productions with Dee Ervin! The set features full Higgins backings throughout – a mix of jazz and strings that takes the usual Gene Harris sound into territory that you'd be much more likely to hear on Cadet Records back in Chi-town – a very hip, very soulful style that's totally great throughout, and a much-needed break from the straighter piano trio sound of other 60s albums the group did on Blue Note. Some tracks are laidback, but others are hard and funky – the kind of sock-solid cuts that have made the album a favorite with sample heads and soul dancers over the years – much heavier keyboard work than we'd ever heard before from Gene Harris, and a great precursor to funky favorites to come. Cuts include the excellent numbers "Sitting Duck", "Sugar Hill", "Black Gold", and "Book of Slim" – plus "Elegant Soul", "African Sweets", and "Walls Of Respect". CD

Blue Note, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
The mighty Monk Higgins works some amazing magic here with the Three Sounds – taking them way past their standard trio modes of the 60s, into some really funky territory overall! The set's a definite symphony of soul – not just because the first side features a super-extended, suite-like tune – but also because all of the tracks feature fuller backings from Higgins, which really push the piano groove of the group! Drums are mighty heavy at points – thanks to trio member Carl Burnett – and the great Henry Franklin is in the group on bass, already crafting those wicked lines that would show up even more strongly on his albums for Black Jazz. In addition to flute from Buddy Collette, guitar from Freddy Robinson, and Gene Harris' super-heavy piano, there's also a bit of strings, and some slight backing vocals in the symphony from a trio that features Alex Brown, Mamie Galore, and Clydie King. The "Soul Symphony" cut runs for 26 minutes on side one – and other tracks include "Popsicle Pimp", "Repeat After Me", "Black Sugar", and "Upper Four Hundred". CD

One of the few albums as a leader from bassist Art Davis – and a wonderfully soulful set that really carries on the strong tradition of work he began in the 50s with John Coltrane and Max Roach! The lineup here is superb – a quartet with Pharoah Sanders on tenor, John Hicks on piano, and Idris Muhammad on drums – all players who open up nicely on the album's longer tracks, exploring the spiritual sides of their music, but with some of the more relaxed qualities they found in the 80s. The recording quality is a bit weird – with lots of space in the mix, almost like a live record, despite a studio setting – and while we would have appreciated a bit more "close up" approach, the fire of the players more than makes up for this aspect. Titles include "Duo", "Life", "Blues From A Concertpiece For Bass", and "Add". CD

Andrew Hill works mostly in a trio here – a great group with Rufus Reid on bass and Ben Riley on drums – but also gets some help from Clifford Jordan's tenor on a few tracks, which really makes the album stand out from other Hill dates of the time! The core group is already great – and Reid and Riley bring a slightly straighter vibe to the date, and a sound that's filled with plenty of soul – and when Jordan joins in, there's almost a classic hardbop approach going on – quite a change from usual for Andrew, and proof that he can handle just about anything that comes his way. Hill still throws out plenty of creative piano lines throughout – those deft, modern moments that are always illuminating, even amidst a straighter swing – with a tension that's not unlike his Grass Roots album. A really great, really creative trio from drummer Paul Motian – quite different than his work of the 60s or 70s, but equally exciting too! The lineup features guitarist Bill Frisell and tenorist Joe Lovano next to Motian's drums – and each player is allowed such individuality, that on some numbers they're often expressing themselves equally at the same time – very much a New York late 80s mode, but better than the usual, given the strength of the players. Other numbers have a more fluid, cohesive feel – sewn especially well with the rich sounds of Frisell's guitar. The set features two long tracks – each taking up a side of the record – and both numbers have a rhythmic pulse that reminds us of Waldron's most imaginative overseas recordings of a decade or so before – a vibe that's soulful and spiritual, and which really sets the scene nicely for Fortune and Ford, both of whom almost sparkle more here than on some of their own dates as leaders from the time. A later recording finding the expressive trumpet of Bill Dixon floating over another of his bass heavy groups, though this time dispensing with one of the multiple bassists he often employed throughout the 80s and replacing it with the tuba of John Buckingham. Somehow Dixon's playing never seems to get bogged down over the dark undercurrents generated by these groups, perhaps because of the lyrical intensity of his solos. This album's a wonderful example of the strengths that Farmer found at the label – as the album's got an easygoing feel, but a bit more bit than some of Art's work of the 80s – a crisp tone in his own flugelhorn, which he'd mastered even more at the time, and some great support from the mighty Clifford Jordan on tenor, whose playing really adds a lot of depth to the session. ✨✧ George Adams/Don PullenDon't Lose Control ... LP
Soul Note (Italy), 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A trashy cover, but a great little record – one that's filled with wonderfully sensitive sounds from the team of George Adams and Don Pullen – working here in some really relaxed, soulful territory! The album's got a laidback feel that's a nice change from some of the more cerebral modes of both players – almost a bit more spontaneous than some of their other recordings together, with a different sort of spirit on each track, and a style that slides easily between different modes of jazz. Adams plays tenor and flute, and sings on one track – Pullen's on acoustic piano, and other players include Cameron Brown on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums. Titles include "Double Arc Jake", "Autumn Song", "Don't Lose Control", "Remember", and "Places & Faces". LP, Vinyl record album

Given how much Paul Bley records at a solo or trio level, it's not typical that we'd see the word "group" next to his name – but the album's only a quartet outing, but one with an unusual lineup – John Scofield on guitar, Steve Swallow on electric bass and Barry Altschul on drums! ✨✧ Steve LacyRevenue ... CD
Soul Note (Italy), 1995. Used ... Out Of Stock
The title might be a bit of a joke – given that the career of Steve Lacy was never enough to warrant a lot of revenue – but the album's a killer with his group of well-honed players from the European scene – one of those great Lacy combo records that never seems to run out of energy or inspiration! Lacy plays soprano sax – alongside Steve Potts on alto and soprano, Jean-Jacques Avenel on bass, and John Betsch on drums – all with that angular, inventive approach to rhythm that was the group's trademark – a style that almost seems to take off from some of Ornette Coleman's early experiments, yet also draw on Lacy's longtime love of Monk, and his own free-thinking tendencies on solo recordings too. Titles include "The Rent", "Revenue", "Gospel", "Esteem", and "The Uh Uh Uh". CD

✨✧ Alphonse MouzonMan Incognito ... CD
Blue Note/Soul Brother (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A monstrous bit of jazz funk from drummer Alphonse Mouzon – spacey tracks in a choppy style that reminds us a bit of some of the best European fusion albums from the period, but with a harder groove overall! Mini Moog and ARP trip out the sound throughout, but the underlying rhythms are nice and heavy. Lee Ritenour's on guitar, and he gets a lot of play on the record – but the main groove is Alphonse's heavy funky snakefoot! Al's drums and percussion are furiously frenetic, and he also plays a lot of keyboards – and other players include Tom Scott on tenor, Dave Grusin on clavinet, Victor Feldman on bongos and congas, and Charles Meeks on bass. A few tracks have vocals – by Marty McCall, Jackie Ward, and Caroline Willis – as well as Alphonse himself and the album's also got two very nice break-oriented tracks – "Snake Walk" and "New York City" – both with nice hard drums! Titles include a number of other good fusion groovers, like "Without A Reason", "Just Like the Sun", "Before You Leave", "Just Like The Sun", and "Mouzon Moves On". CD

✨✧ Max RoachEasy Winners ... CD
Soul Note (Italy), 1985. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great work from Max Roach's Double Quartet of the mid 80s – a group that wasn't just an octet, but an expansion of Max's regular four piece group with the addition of a string quartet! The core jazz sound of Odeon Pope's tenor, Tyrone Brown's electric bass, and Cecil Bridgewater's trumpet is expanded by a string group that includes Maxine Roach on viola – and that family relation is probably one reason that made experimentation like this easy for Max! The approach is a surprisingly great one – as the quartet seems to hold the Roach group a bit more inside than before – letting Pope and Bridgewater stretch out on their solos, but not get as sloppy as they had in some of the more outside Roach quartet outings. And the strings color in things really nicely in classic "with strings" jazz mode – but one that echoes more with 70s soul jazz use of such styles than earlier approaches. Titles include "A Little Booker", "Easy Winners", "Sis", and "Birds Says". CD

✨✧ George RussellEssence Of George Russell ... CD
Sonet/Soul Note (Italy), 1966/1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
Seminal Swedish recordings from George Russell – mid 60s material that's quite different than his American albums of a few years before – and proof that his time overseas really helped to unlock his creativity! The centerpiece of the album is an early version of "Electronic Sonata For Souls Loved By Nature" – a tune recorded often by Russell, but done here in a stunning 60 minute version that really opens up wonderfully – a flurry of horn parts played by a larger group that includes Lennart Aberg on tenor and soprano, Arne Domnerus on alto and clarinet, Jan Garbarek on tenor, Berndt Egerbladh on vibes, Bengt Hallberg on piano, and Terje Rypdal on guitar – all key Scandinavian modernists, really given sharp focus here by Russell! The "sonata" got a romping, rhythmic pulse that really holds things together – even when the horns get a bit free – and it's followed by the equally great "Now & Then", which echoes a bit of the main theme, then goes way off into left field! ✨✧ Horace SilverThat Healin' Feelin' – United States Of Mind Phase 1 ... CD
Blue Note/Soul Brother (UK), 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most righteous Horace Silver albums for Blue Note – and a far-reaching, politically-bent batch of tracks that feature vocals by Andy Bey, in a similar style to the work he did on the Gary Bartz records from the time – very hip, and quite different than other jazz vocal work from other singers! Silver plays electric piano on most of the record – and other musicians include Houston Person on tenor and Idris Muhammad on drums – both of whom figure on cuts that feature singer Jackie Verdell replacing Andy Bey. The groove is pretty great throughout – lots of those offbeat lines that you might hear on other Bey albums, warmed up with some of Silver's more familiar soul jazz – and the album is volume 1 (or "Phase 1") of Horace's trippy United States Of Mind series, a series of records on the state of the then-trashed union (proving once again that what goes around, comes around!) Tracks include "The Happy Medium", "Permit Me To Introduce Myself", "Wipe Away the Evil", and "Love Vibrations". CD

✨✧ Ran Blake feat Houston PersonSuffield Gothic ... LP
Soul Note (Italy), 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An unlikely pairing, but a great one too – quite an unusual chapter in the career of pianist Ran Blake – but in a way, a great set to unlock the soulful undercurrents that have always been in his music! About half the tracks feature the tenor of Houston Person joining in – working these amazing sounds in duets with Ran, and creating this depth of feeling that grabs us right from the start! Given that Person rarely did dates like this too – the set's unusual for him, too – and even when Houston's not on board, Blake's solo lines still have a feeling that's full of soul. Despite the crowd of people on the cover, the album's just a duo/solo outing – and titles include "Indian Winter", "Curtis", "Vanguard", "Old Man River", "Midnight Local To Tate County", "There's Been A Change In My Life", and "Tribute To Mahalia".
